latu's year over » Penrith’s forward pack has taken a hit

with prop Leilani Latu (pictured) ruled out for the rest of the season with a broken jaw. Latu came off the field early in the second half of Penrith’s win over the Bulldogs last Thursday and was clearly in trouble – with scans later confirming the bad news. The 24-year-old required surgery but should be fully recovered by the time pre-season training commences in November.

» In some better injury news, Trent Merrin is determined to be back for Penrith’s trip to the nation’s capital to take on Canberra in round 24. Penrith’s medical team think a round 25 comeback against the Dragons is more likely but Merrin is working to be back as soon as possible.

Either way, he’ll be firing for the Finals should the Panthers make it.

» A third party deal is believed to be at

the centre of Nathan Cleary’s potential new contract, which would see him remain at the club until at least the end of the 2024 season. Signing a player for such a huge length of time is always a gamble, but the Panthers believe they can build a side around Cleary for the next decade. Negotiations between Phil Gould, Panthers CEO Brian Fletcher and Cleary’s management are well advanced.

» One brave punter placed a bet of

$12,000 on the Panthers to win the 2017 Premiership through the TAB earlier this week. He got the juicy odds of $17.

» Penrith players wanted to wear the

green Rugby League Players Association (RLPA) arm bands against the Bulldogs last weekend but were asked not to by Panthers head honcho, Phil Gould. Players across the NRL are trying to make the league-loving public more aware of their pay battle with head office.

» Spotted: Channel Nine NRL host James Bracey feverishly writing notes inside the James Squires Lounge at Panthers Leagues Club last Thursday afternoon.

» Corey Harawira-Naera paid a visit to

Ivan Cleary’s house prior to re-signing with Penrith to hear about the offer on the table from the Wests Tigers. Nothing strange about that, except for the fact that Harawira-Naera’s team mate, Nathan Cleary, was home at the time. Awkward.

» Panthers winger Dallin Watene-Zelezniak has vowed to continue volunteering at junior games despite being attacked by another official last month. “Everyone has their bad days and it happened to be that guy’s bad day on that Saturday and I happened to be the trigger,” DWZ said

earlier this week. “It’s going to take a lot more than that for me to stop helping out the junior league.”

» The Panthers smartly made Nathan

Cleary available to any journalist who wanted to speak to him on Monday morning, ensuring they got ahead of the mounting media interest ahead of his showdown with dad Ivan on Sunday afternoon.

» Channel Seven has confirmed their

commentary team for the 2017 Rugby League World Cup. As suggested last week, Triple M’s Dan Ginnane and the ABC’s Andrew Moore will head up the team, which will also include former Panthers stars Ryan Girdler and Scott Sattler as expert commentators.

» Mitch Rein continues to be linked with

a move to the Newcastle Knights, who are desperately searching for an experienced hooker for next season. It’s understood the deal hinges on how much the Panthers would be willing to tip in to Rein’s potential deal at Newcastle, given he’s already under contract with the Panthers for 2018.

T

he top eight is calling, but will Penrith answer?

The Panthers’ victory over Canterbury last Thursday night combined with the Dragons and Sea Eagles both losing has well and truly opened the door for Anthony Griffin’s team to slip into the Finals.

In fact if all goes to plan Penrith will be in the top eight by 6pm Sunday night and will then control their own destiny as far as qualifying for September football is concerned.

But as we all know, very little goes to plan in rugby league.

And this Sunday’s battle of the big cats at

Pepper Stadium is without doubt a danger game. Not only did the Tigers manage to produce one of their best performances of the season against the Titans last Sunday, but this game has plenty of added intrigue especially when it comes to the ‘Cleary Showdown’, with Tigers coach Ivan plotting against son Nathan. There’s even more family rivalry at play with Dallin and Malakai Watene-Zelezniak facing off against each other for the first time.

Truth is this will be a story much more interesting to the media and fans than the players – it may feel a little ‘weird’, as Ivan Cleary described it during the week, but all in all it’ll be business as usual come 4pm Sunday afternoon.

Despite the impressive scoreline in the Tigers’ favour last weekend there can be no doubting the Titans simply failed to turn up with their season on the line – producing a 59 per cent completion rate

and a whopping 17 errors. But the match stats or the opposition won’t worry Ivan Cleary – he’d just be happy that his side found some much-needed confidence that he can work with in the remaining games of 2017 and the long pre-season that is to come.

James Tedesco proved against the Titans that he plans to leave the Tigers on a high, and his light feet will be a worry for a Penrith defensive line that hasn’t always been steady this season, and was dealt a further blow last week when Leilani Latu was ruled out for the rest of the season with a broken jaw.

One thing without doubt in Penrith’s favour is the long break between games – especially for skipper Matt Moylan, who continues to battle a persistent hamstring injury but has been named on an extended bench this week and is a good chance of playing.

It may only be a little thing but the extra three days of preparation could make the world of difference, especially given the Tigers had to throw in some travel back from Queensland as well.

With the Tigers well and truly out of Finals contention this game provides an opportunity for the Panthers to really put the cleaners through an opposition.

While a 30 or 40 point drubbing is not necessarily needed (although it would help given for and against is currently keeping Penrith out of the eight), it would be nice to walk away from Pepper Stadium convinced that the Panthers have what it takes to compete in the Finals.

With a fifth win in a row on the line, I can’t see the Panthers slipping here, but they’ll need to be on alert at all times especially in broken play where Tedesco in particular is most dangerous.

f you ever watch a Nathan Cleary highlights tape on YouTube, you’ll notice Panthers rookie Tyrone May a fair bit also.

The talented pair combined so well during Penrith’s premiershipwinning Holden Cup season in 2015, that their combination in first grade has been relatively seamless in the absence of injured five-eighth Matt Moylan.

In fact, some would argue that 19-yearold Cleary plays better alongside the Minchinbury Jets junior than the Panthers captain.

Speaking with Extra Time, 21-year-old May said working with Cleary comes “easy” and “natural”.

“We don’t really have to work on our combination too much because we’ve had it for a while,” he said.

“I know what he’s going to do, so I just follow what he does. You don’t really know coming through the ranks who’s going to play grade and who is going to go the other way; it’s just good to see Nath came through early last year and I get to make the step up and play off him again.”

May made his unexpected first grade debut three weeks ago during a cold and miserable winter’s night in Auckland.

With Moylan unavailable due to a niggling hamstring injury, May got the tap on the shoulder from Panthers coach Anthony Griffin.

“I’d been playing a few positions in reserve grade including back-row, centre and fullback but when Te Maire [Martin] left I got to play five-eighth,” May said.

“When Moyza went down, Hook said I was next in line. I was like ‘oh yeah sweet’.

“My mum and dad came over on a last minute flight to watch me play. It didn’t hit me that I was playing first grade until the warm up.”

“I don’t know what the plan is… I’ll just have to see what Hook has in store for me going forward,” May said.

“If I can get bigger in size I might play more in the forwards or become a utility.

I don’t mind where I play; if I get a shot I’ll try my best.”

May, who is contracted to the Panthers until the end of 2018, is a good chance of

filling in for Moylan again this Sunday against the Wests Tigers.

May said while his confidence at the top level continues to grow with every game, coach Griffin wants him to put a lot of focus on his defence.

“All the attack will flow naturally because I’ve played with Nath before, so it’s really about getting my defence right and talking to my edge players in Yeo, Peach and Sauce,” he said.

“If we can get our defence right on our edge then our attack will flow naturally.”

T

he relationship between a father and son is always very special.

Dads teach their boys how ride a bike, drive a car and even talk to girls but never before in the NRL era has a father ever coached against his son in a first grade rugby league game.

This Sunday afternoon it’ll be Cleary vs Cleary when father Ivan coaches against son Nathan when the Wests Tigers battle the Panthers at Pepper Stadium.

All the attention was on the 19-year-old Penrith halfback on Monday as he began to prepare for what no doubt will be an awkward week at the Cleary residence.

Nathan, who still lives at home with his parents and siblings, said it will be an interesting week at their Emu Plains home.

“I’m sure there will be a bit of banter…

I don’t know if he’ll cook anything for me this week, I’ll have to leave that up to mum,” he said.

“Na [I won’t move out], I’ll just get on with life as it is. I don’t think it will have too much of an impact on our lives but it will be pretty funny.”

When Ivan took over as Tigers coach earlier this season, many fans couldn’t wait for the Round 22 clash between Penrith and the joint venture club to roll around.

And while Nathan won’t be carpooling with his father to the game on Sunday, his mum Bec isn’t quite sure who she’ll be cheering on come 4pm.

“Mum’s sitting on the fence at the moment,” Nathan revealed.

“She doesn’t know who to support, she’ll be the equalizer throughout the week.”

While both Nathan and Ivan will be treating the week as normal as possible, there’s no denying that it’s a very unique and weird situation.

“I’m just trying to think of it as any other game with any other coach,” Nathan said.

“It does make it a bit weird because my dad knows my game the best and he’s the one trying to take me down this week.”

Ivan agreed saying it was rather odd and that he was almost dreading the experience.

Blues coach Laurie Daley needs to walk the plank

he time has come for Laurie Daley to walk away from coaching the NSW Blues.

After winning just one series from five attempts, I think deep down even he knows his time is up.

You can’t coach Origin forever, especially when you have been as unsuccessful as Laurie has been over the years.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Laurie as most people in rugby league do. He coached me in the All Stars game and brought some really good stuff to the team. But coaching Origin can take a lot out of you and it’s very stressful.

In terms of a replacement? I don’t know who the best option is or who is willing to even do it for that matter.

I know Ricky Stuart and Phil Gould have had success in that arena in the past but I’m sure those two are quite content with what they have on their plates at the moment.

Ricky coached me back in 2011 and I’d love to see him get another crack.

Ricky ‘got’ Origin and understood short preparations and how to get guys up for

Blues coach Laurie Daley should walk away from the job, according to Jamie Soward

the game. He’d be a great choice.

People have raised the topic of an NRL club coach coaching Origin again, which I’m also quite happy with.

Craig Bellamy would be a viable option but whether he wants to do it, we’ll have to wait and see.

Whoever comes in next – whether it’s Laurie or someone new – that coach needs to be comfortable within himself, put together his own team and not let any senior players in the squad (except for the captain) get in the way.

We need to have someone come in that has a clear vision of where they want to take NSW in the future.

No one is denying that those pesky Queenslanders have had a luxury over the past 12 or so years but it’s time NSW worry about themselves.

At the end of the day, the NSWRL can conduct as many reviews and investigations into off-field dramas as they want but the simple thing is: NSW lost the series because they got beat on the field.

What the NSWRL should be doing is bunkering down and plan for next year instead of conducting these reviews three weeks after they lost.

Bailey attends Surveyor’s Creek Public School and he has worked hard this week to interact positively with his fellow Panthers on the Prowl classmates. He was invited to come onto the field before the game against the Gold Coast Titans, where he was able to get up close and personal with our Penrith Panthers.

After photos with Dean Whare and Phil Gould, Bailey went to the tunnel to high five the Panthers players back into the sheds. For many of our students it is their first experience at an NRL game and it is a huge buzz for them to get out onto Pepper Stadium on game day.

This weekend takes us back to a simpler time in footy

I

t’s only the second edition of Fox Sports’ Retro Round, but if leather footballs, black and white candystriped corner posts and 1980s mullet haircuts were a big part of your formative rugby league years, then this is one weekend you’ve had circled on the calendar since Round 1.

There’s something about the memory of what was a far more simple time in footy – no video refs, no scrum clocks, no penalties for stripping the ball – that never fails to bring a smile to your face.

Footy cards smelt like bubble game and sounded great flicking through the spokes of your bike’s front wheel after you’d wedged one into the forks of a Malvern Star.

The Panthers were on the rise, the Tigers were actually a very good team and Canterbury’s forward pack gave birth to the ‘Dogs of War’ tag.

The Bulldogs and Tigers might be at a low ebb in 2017, but history has a chance of repeating for the Panthers, who have come good after giving themselves a huge handicap in the first two months of the season.

They meet Wests this Sunday in a game

notable for the clash of the Clearys. Can you imagine what it’s like this week in the Cleary household as Ivan plots against his son Nathan, the 19-year-old rising star who has helped carry Penrith back into Finals contention?

Ivan, at some stage in the past, would have dared dream of the day he coached the Panthers with his son, Nathan, steering them around the old Penrith Park turf in the number seven jersey.

Fate dictated that the dream remains just that, and now he has to find a way to negate the skills he helped mould in the son who might just determine whether the Panthers’ push for the playoffs remains alive.

It should ensure there’s a packed house at Pepper Stadium, and if you’re headed there, put some big shoulder pads on, wrap some black electrical tape around your ears, and think back to the great days of the Eighties, a time when MG provided the muscle and Brandy produced the magic!

Fox League’s Retro Round celebrates rugby league in the 80s, and will be brought to life on Fox League throughout the week and across Round 22.

T

he John Cartwright story is more about the journey than how it all ended – but the story of his final game deserves to be told.

A legend of the Panthers, Cartwright played his final game for the club in front of just 3,870 fans on a wet and windy night at Penrith Football Stadium in 1996.

It was far from the glamorous departure that he deserved. But those in the crowd that last night would remember Cartwright’s vintage performance as he turned back the clock to produce a stunning game that helped the Panthers to a 24-16 win over Parramatta.

When the famous Penrith Stadium siren sounded that night, Cartwright was in possession of the ball.

It seemed fitting.

Earlier, he’d taken an attempt at goal, as so many retiring players do in their last game, but missed.

Cartwright held it together during a lap of honour, watched by only the most loyal of Penrith fans, but when he saw his father Merv in tears on the sideline, he lost all composure “I promised myself that I wouldn’t get choked up,” he said later.

“But seeing Dad crying made me break down too. I realised then that it was all over.”

In 1996, the Panthers had an awful season – they won just seven matches and finished 15th in the competition.

It was a tough year for Cartwright, who had been there during the glory days of the early 1990s.

In fact, when the Panthers won the premiership in 1991, Cartwright was in his best form – he represented New South Wales in eight games between 1989 and 1992, and played 18 games for Australia between 1990 and 1992.

When he finally walked off the Penrith Stadium turf on that lonely night back in

1996, he’d played 184 first grade games for the Panthers.

Like many others, he would have a swansong in England – via the Salford City Reds – but Cartwright was forever a Panther.

The Cartwright name is synonymous with the Penrith Panthers.

Until recently, it was probably John Cartwright whose name was most famously connected with the club in terms of the wider public. But Cartwright’s nephew, Bryce, must be on the verge of taking over that crown.

John Cartwright would go on to join the rugby league coaching ranks, working with the Gold Coast Titans until the back end of the 2014 season. He is now an assistant coach at the Manly Sea Eagles.

The 3,870 fans who saw John Cartwright play his final game at Penrith Stadium back in late 1996 witnessed the departure of a true legend of the club.
