BLUES NOW HAPPY WITH API !
Freddy’s big gamble: Just a year ago Api Koroisau was on the nose with NSW Origin management after sneaking a woman into the Blues camp; a situation made worse by COVID restrictions at the time. Now he’s the starting hooker for the do-or-die clash with Queensland on Sunday night. Blues coach Brad Fittler has opted to back the playmaking Penrith trio of Jarome Luai, Nathan Cleary and Koroisau to get the job done, with a total of seven Penrith players now in the starting side for the clash in Perth.
Api Koroisau.
!
Cleary to bounce back: The bookies are confident that Nathan Cleary will brush aside his poor performance in the opening Origin game to produce a standout effort in Perth on Sunday. He’s currently the $5.50 favourite with the TAB to take out Player of the Match honours, ahead of Cameron Munster, Daly Cherry-Evans and James Tedesco.
!
May’s day in court: Try-scoring sensation Taylan May will front court in Queensland again on October 19 where he’ll defend assault charges levelled against him last year. The NRL Integrity Unit and Panthers appear to be backing May after viewing CCTV footage of the incident at a Maroochydore pub, and May has not been subjected to any stand-down or suspension. While the October court date means the case won’t further disrupt Penrith’s Premiership push, it could cause havoc for the World Cup. May, and several witnesses, are likely to be in England on October 19 – and will have to seek leave to appear via video link.
!
Spotted: Panthers and Blues hooker Api Koroisau loading up on some sushi at Sapporo in Penrith last week.
!
Spotted: Champion Penrith halfback Nathan Cleary and Warriors playmaker Shaun Johnson deep in conversation after full-time of last week’s clash in Redcliffe.
!
Truth in advertising: You’ve got to laugh at the Sportsbet ad that runs constantly on Fox League where a group of mates ask an expert fisherman his thoughts on Penrith winning 13+. “Probably not,” he declares. “There’s a few injuries this week.” The bloke should stick to fishing. Penrith have won 12 of their 15 matches by 13+ this season and have had the lowest injury toll of any NRL club. Awkward.
the perfect unique experience to enjoy, share or gift
!
Coach on deck: Ivan Cleary is hopeful of not missing any further games due to his ongoing knee complaint. He couldn’t travel to Redcliffe last week after blood clots moved to his lungs, with his doctors putting a red pen through all of Cleary’s travel suggestions. Penrith don’t jump on a plane again until September, so Cleary is likely to be back in the coach’s box for the run to the Finals.

Money matters: The Panthers are doing their best to ensure the players handle their money wisely. They’ve had financial experts in to speak with the NRL squad about budgets and investments. In addition, a number of younger players are given one-on-one financial advice as they navigate the reality of their first contracts.
!
Spotted: The Fiji team training at St Marys Leagues Stadium on Tuesday ahead of their clash with Papua New Guinea on Saturday.
!
No deadline: Reports that the Wests Tigers have placed a deadline on Cameron Ciraldo (pictured) to make a decision about coaching the club next season are off the mark. The Tigers are in no position to make such a demand, particularly given Ciraldo has had plenty on his plate with Ivan Cleary in and out of work due to his health concerns. The Tigers need an answer soon but they’re certainly not going to pressure Ciraldo. As much as he’s leaning towards making the switch to Concord, Penrith remain somewhat confident he may just stay at the foot of the Mountains.

HOW VILI TRANSFORMED TO A LEADER NATHAN TAYLOR
V
iliame Kikau admits getting the opportunity to vice-captain Fiji this weekend will be one of the biggest honours of his career. Despite the Premiership taking a break for NRL Representative Round, no less than 19 Panthers players will still be in action for various teams this weekend. This Saturday evening Kikau will help lead the Fiji Bati side alongside Kevin Naiqama when they take on Papua New Guinea at Campbelltown Sports Stadium. Tomorrow night’s blockbuster clash against the Kumuls will be the first time the 27-year-old has represented his homeland since the Rugby League World Cup 9s back in 2019. Speaking with Extra Time, Kikau said he couldn’t wait to get into camp and meet some of his new teammates. “Some old faces will be there and there will definitely be heaps of new faces too – it’s always a good camp to be in,” he said. “I like it because some of the boys who weren’t born in Fiji get to learn heaps about the culture and the boys that come from Fiji, like myself, are always happy to share stories about home. I’m really looking forward to it.” While Kikau has had unofficial leadership roles in the past, this will be the first time the powerhouse backrower has vice-captained his country. Kikau said he credits one key person at

Panthers for turning him into a better leader on and off the field. “That’s one of the things I’ve been trying to learn the last couple of years, is taking a leadership role around here,” he said outside Panthers HQ last week. “I had a tap on the shoulder from Ivan and he always tells me, ‘you’ve got to be a leader now, you’ve got to lead the team, you’ve got to talk more’, so that’s what I’ve been doing. “I’ll never say ‘no’ to playing for my country and if I get that honour of vice-captain, that would be massive for me and my family and everyone back home.” Debuting with the Panthers in 2017, Kikau is in career-best form this season. He’s consistently playing 80 minutes per game and has already scored six tries in 15 matches this year. “I wasn’t always going to play 80 at the start of my NRL career, that’s for sure, but I’ve learned and experienced a lot and I’m playing whole games now,” Kikau admitted. Bulldogs-bound in 2023, Kikau said his one and only focus is to get Penrith to the mountaintop again and win another Premiership. “I think for us the biggest challenge is going from great to great again, which was one of the themes back in pre-season,” he said. “It’s so hard when you’ve reached the highest point and then you have to go back down and start again. Pre-season built us really well for this. Experience comes with it as well. “Losing in 2020 and then 2021 we had to go down again to get back up. Same case this year. So, the boys know what it takes to be up there, and that mindset drives us every single day.”

PENRITH PLAYERS TO LIGHT UP THE REP STAGE THIS WEEKEND T
he Panthers will have 19 players representing their state and country in this weekend’s NRL Representative Round. For this weekend only, the competition proper is suspended and State of Origin takes centre stage on Sunday. There are so many Penrith players on show that I thought I’d put together a little guide on which Panthers to look out for in each game. I’ll even give you my tip! At the time of writing only the squads were known for each side. The final 17 were not yet selected.

league with Peter Lang
quartet it is. Izack Tago, Spencer Leniu, Taylan May and Charlie Staines are all in fine form for Penrith, yes, even Charlie Staines albeit in NSW Cup. My tip: Samoa. Papua New Guinea v Fiji Bati Saturday, June 25 – Campbelltown Sports Stadium – 7.50pm. Look for both Viliame Kikau and Sunia Turuva to grab starting spots in the Fijian Bati team. We all know how dangerous Kikau is while Turuva is the next big thing in my opinion. He hasn’t played first grade yet but has been the player of the NSW Cup competition and has skill, footwork and speed to burn! My tip: Fiji Bati.
Under 19’s Men’s State of Origin – New South Wales v Queensland Thursday, June 23 – Leichhardt Oval – 7.45pm. Look out for youngster Jack Cole who will play for NSW in this match. My tip: NSW. New Zealand v Mate Ma’a Tonga Saturday, June 25 – Mount Smart Stadium, NZ – 3.30pm. Apart from the State of Origin game, this will be the one to watch. Potentially you could be watching up to five Panthers in this game. James Fisher-Harris, Moses Leota and Scott Sorensen are all good chances to play for New Zealand while Tonga could have both Soni Luke and young gun Isaiya Katoa in their side. My tip: New Zealand. Samoa v Cook Islands Saturday, June 25 – Campbelltown Sports Stadium – 5.40pm. There will be four Panthers who I think will all be named in the Samoan side and what a

State of Origin Game II New South Wales v Queensland Sunday, June 26 at Optus Stadium, Perth – 7.50pm. This is the big one with seven, yes, seven Panthers players to represent New South Wales in the sky blue against the might of Queensland. Look for Jarome Luai and Nathan Cleary to bounce back in a big way in the halves and link up with teammate Isaah Yeo who will feed the ball to both Stephen Crichton and Brian To’o in the backline. Liam Martin is also expected to start. You can also expect Apisai Koroisau to provide plenty of punch and guile as he starts the match ahead of Damien Cook, who has been dropped in somewhat of a surprise. Only don’t blame me if Blues coach Freddy Fittler makes some late changes, which makes what I just wrote invalid. My tip: New South Wales.

EMOTION WILL RISE TO THE FORE IN HUGE WEEKEND OF FOOTBALL I
can hear the Haka already. Maybe a bit louder, stronger and scarier than usual, if that’s possible. Representative rugby league makes a return to New Zealand on Saturday when the Kiwis play Tonga. What an emotional event it will be as part of a bigger celebration for the game in and around Auckland. Mount Smart Stadium will host first-class rugby league for the first time since the Warriors went down to Souths on Friday, August 30 2019. Nearly three years ago.
The Kiwis are in Auckland for the first time since beating Great Britain in November 2019. Shortly after that COVID descended, the Warriors moved to Australia, international rugby league went in the too-hard basket and the above dates drifted into the dark recesses. Use the back of your mind to hear the Kiwi Haka and Tongan Sipi Tau as you read this and imagine the emotion of the pre-game theatre, knowing the players will be high on adrenalin, wearing the jersey of their birth nation or family heritage, having spent precious little time at home – if any – and are performing in front

of family and friends, who mean the world to them. Then thank God you don’t have to make the first tackle. Both these countries could make some noise at the World Cup later this year and will want to fire a big shot here. New Zealand boast the best forward in the game right now – Canberra’s Joe Tapine, who has a host of career-high statistics at Canberra this season. Jahrome Hughes is ‘going OK’ for Melbourne too. The same can be said of James Fisher-Harris, Isaiah Papali’i, Te Maire Martin and the list goes on. Let’s remember Tonga won their last two Tests – taking down Great Britain and Australia in late 2019. The cornerstones of that rousing performance against the Kangaroos are back – Jason Taumalolo and Addin Fonua-Blake. Only this time they’ll be supported by debutants Haumole Olakau’atu and Keaon Koloamatangi. Can’t they play?! If you’re still imagining that first tackle, I suggest you stop before you get hurt. The bumps and bruises will keep coming at Campbelltown when Samoa lines up against Cook Islands and Papua New Guinea plays Fiji. What a day on Fox League! Before you know it, Origin II will be over and it’s onto Round 16 – where the Warriors go home against Wests Tigers. The Mt Smart crowd will stand and applaud, which the rest of us should do as well. They gave up the most to save the NRL. NSW v QLD might dominate at this time of year but make sure you save some room for Mt Smart Stadium this weekend and next. What a time.

PANTHERS GO INTO BYE WEEKEND WITH PLENTY OF CONFIDENCE T
lower grades report with Lachlan Jeffery @LachlanJeffery
he Penrith Panthers have returned to the top of the Knock-On Effect NSW Cup ladder with a convincing 26-6 win over Newtown. Running into a strong Henson Park breeze, the Panthers were forced to defend their tryline for a lot of the first half, however they held solid. The Panthers opened the scoring in the 11th minute when the returning Sean O’Sullivan backed up an offload and raced 30m to score. Newtown got on the board in the 25th minute when Kayal Iro pounced on a loose grubber. Penrith attempted to build pressure, but it amounted to nothing when J’Maine Hopgood was held up shortly before Charlie Staines was denied due to an obstruction. John Faiumu crashed over seconds before the siren to give Penrith a 12-6 half-time lead. The lead was doubled immediately after halftime when Staines sliced through Newtown’s kick-chase and set up Trent Toelau to race away, with O’Sullivan converting from touch. Penrith’s confidence began to grow and they started chancing their arm, leading to a try out wide by Daeon Amituanai in the 48th minute. The match developed into an end-to-end contest and both sides failed to capitalise on opportunities, before Amituanai crossed for his second nine minutes before full-time to blow the lead out to 20. It was good news for the Jersey Flegg Panthers as well as they broke a four-game losing streak to beat Cronulla 30-18. The Panthers got away to a perfect start when William Fakatoumafi scored after just four minutes. Both sides suffered from ill-discipline, but it was the Sharks who were made to pay as Niwhai

and Hohepa Puru both scored in the final five minutes of the first half. The Sharks got on the board shortly after the resumption through Kai Parker, however that was quickly cancelled out by Fakatoumafi’s second. It was a similar story shortly after as Ryan Rivett crossed for the Sharks, only for Niwhai Puru to
score his second immediately after. Samuel Healey crossed with 10 minutes left to give the Sharks a sniff of a comeback, but a pair of penalty goals by Addison Williams gave Penrith a much-needed win. The rep weekend means that both the NSW Cup and Jersey Flegg teams don’t play this weekend.
my panther memories
NAME: GLENN WILTON | SUBURB: REGENTVILLE up against the defending Premiers at their home ground we were given little chance. It was a great game and it was topped off by a Soward field goal with 10 seconds left, what a way to win. It was great being there and we celebrated well into the night. How long have you been supporting the Panthers? 44 years.

What is your greatest Penrith Panthers memory? 2014 Semi Final vs the Sydney Roosters. Why was this memory so important to you? After many lean years since the 2003 Grand Final this game signified Penrith being a force again for years to come. So many players got injured during that season and coming
