The Deep: Be amazed by what lurks beneath the oceans Dive into the darkest reaches of the deep sea, without getting wet, and explore alien creatures in one of the most illuminating exhibitions at the ArtScience Museum The school holidays are almost here and if you’re wondering where you can bring your little ones, look no further than the ArtScience Museum’s The Deep. There, you can come face to face with the creatures that inhabit the dark ocean bed, some 5,000m beneath the surface. The deep sea is so devoid of light that most marine life don’t get documented — until now. For the first time in Southeast Asia, the largest collection of extremely rare abyssal creatures is on display. Find out how a world of darkness is actually home to colourful and odd organisms, and uncover never-beforeseen specimens.

Photo: © 2002 MBARI

From the Monstrous to the magical In Zone A of the exhibition, look out for the arresting centrepiece: The Black-Devil Anglerfish that’s a rarity to find, let alone capture and preserve. Did you know that this menacing anglerfish is actually the female, and the male is but a tiny fraction of her size? This one on display has a male attached to her — see if you can spot him! You can explore many other odd monstrosities in the same zone, such as the Stereomastis sp. that looks like a giant bed bug, and the Black Dragon Fish that lights up when it is disturbed.

Above: Catch monstrous yet magical deep sea creatures like Murray’s abyssal anglerfish on display at The Deep Right: In the depths of the ocean, creatures take on all shapes and sizes – from cute and colourful to strange and menacing

4 Cool Facts about the Deep Sea 1. The average depth of the sea is about 3.2km — about seven Petronas Towers high 2. Scientists estimate that between 10 and 30 million deep-sea species remain undiscovered 3. At 4,000m deep, the pressure exerted by the water is equivalent to a cow standing on your thumbnail 4. 90 per cent of deep-sea creatures produce their own light — whether for mating, luring prey or communicating

Besides getting up close to deep-sea specimens, you’ll also get to dip your hands into the world of strange, deep sea fauna. Use recycled materials to create your own upcycled deep-sea creature, such as your own glowing Anglerfish — complete with its light-up UV bait. These upcycling workshops will also teach you about the types of plastics and their impact on our oceans. There are still Upcycle Art workshops conducted on Aug 21 and 22, and Sep 4, 7, 18 and 24, at 4.30pm. The Make Your Own Glowing Angler Fish workshop is still running on Aug 28 and 29, and Sep 11 and 25, at 4.30pm. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the Basement 2 retail space. Don’t miss the complimentary public guided tours of The Deep, starting from the entrance to the exhibition. The remaining ones will be conducted on Sep 24 at 2.30pm and every Friday at 3.30pm for families.

By Pamela Chow The Deep is on at ArtScience Museum, 6 Bayfront Avenue, Singapore 018974, until Oct 27.

Isa Halim revives Tampines’ S.League title bid Two title contenders will go all out to prove their credentials in the Great Eastern Yeo’s S.League this weekend — with a certain midfield enforcer taking centre stage When LionsXII allowed captain Isa Halim to join S.League giant Tampines Rovers in June, V Sundramoorthy knew he had acquired the services of one of the best defensive midfielders in Singapore, despite two poor seasons blighted with injury. It is no coincidence that Isa’s arrival has resurrected Tampines’ title challenge, with seven points from its last four matches.

Having seen a three-match unbeaten streak come to an end in the 2-1 loss to Warriors FC last time out, Tampines will be keen to return to winning ways on Friday night at the Jalan Besar Stadium, especially against Balestier — missing its first-choice fullbacks through injury. Isa will partner Robert Alviz in the middle of the park, with the latter responsible for providing the assists to the 12-goal strike force of Mateo Roskam and Rodrigo Tosi. If the Stags’ defence can stop Balestier striker Miroslav Kristic, a win by a slim margin is the likely outcome. Prediction: Tampines 2-1 Balestier

Swandi brilliance not enough to trouble DPMM Brunei DPMM will be desperate to claim victory against Courts Young Lions on Sunday night in Bandar Seri Begawan so it can keep pace with Albirex Niigata and Warriors FC.

Isa Halim has proven himself to be one of the best defensive midfielders in Singapore

With six wins and two draws in their last eight meetings, this should be a walk in the park for DPMM, especially with Rafael Ramazotti hungry to add to his leagueleading 13-goal tally. The absence of Paulo Sergio will be a big loss, but Azwan Ali has proven to be an able replacement. As for the visitors, one-time FC Metz player Adam Swandi has quietly carried his team forward. If the 19-year-old playmaker is allowed to run riot in attack, the Bruneians could be in for a rude shock. Having said that, too much is on the line for DPMM so a comfortable home win is on the cards. Prediction: Brunei DPMM 2-0 Courts Young Lions By Kelvin Leong

Liverpool faces major test & Man U looks for third straight win Week 3 of the English Premier League season throws up some tantalising tussles, headlined by the battle between familiar foes in North London The thrust of Chilean Alexis Sanchez will once again be crucial to Arsenal, this time against Liverpool

The game of the round of matches this week won’t kick off until Tuesday, 3am (Singapore time), when the Merseysiders look to avenge last season’s humiliating defeat at the Emirates Stadium. In April, the Gunners thrashed Liverpool 4-1 in a performance that sent alarm bells ringing among Reds’ fans. Sure enough, Liverpool went into an end-of-season slide that saw them finish sixth, culminating in a 6-1 humiliation against Stoke. Brendan Rodgers has brought in eight new players to Liverpool in the summer and how his reshaped side fares will depend on them. Arsene Wenger was relieved to see Arsenal put its West Ham horror show behind to grind out a 2-1 victory at Crystal Palace last Sunday. Olivier Giroud’s unbelievable opening goal at Selhurst Park won the plaudits but it was the thrust of Alexis Sanchez and the artistry of Mesut Oezil that secured the crucial three points. The trio will again be key for the visit of Rodgers’ men. Aaron Ramsey was relatively quiet at Palace while Theo Walcott didn’t get off the bench but expect the British pair to be involved at home in North London, especially in the second half when late goals have tended to be a feature of this fixture. This will be a big test for the Liverpool defence and it may well buckle under the pressure of the Gunners’ dazzling passing game. Prediction: Arsenal 3-1 Liverpool

Manchester United VS Newcastle United Louis van Gaal’s men have been blessed with a rather benign set of fixtures to begin the season. They won’t face a top four team until Arsenal on Oct 4. On Saturday, they face a Newcastle side down on its luck, with just one point to show from the opening two weeks of the season. They’re coming off a miserable 2-0 defeat at Swansea where full-back Daryl Janmaat was sent off for a second bookable offence. Manchester United may have started its 2015-2016 campaign with two victories but it has been less than convincing. Wayne Rooney, in particular, has appeared rusty. Dutch starlet Memphis Depay is still looking for his first Premier League goal, and hopes are up as he has just scored his first two goals for United in the 3-1 comeback win against Club Brugge in the UEFA Champions League playoff 1st leg. In the Premier League, United is more defensively solid than last season, with the once maligned Chris Smalling growing in confidence at the back. Two seasons ago, the Magpies secured their first league victory at Old Trafford since 1972 thanks to Yohan Cabaye’s goal against David Moyes’ men. But there is virtually no chance of that happening again this weekend.

Photo: Natursports / Shutterstock.com

Arsenal vs Liverpool

West Bromwich Albion VS Chelsea The signing of Augsburg left-back Baba Rahman was a welcome distraction for Jose Mourinho after a miserable week as the Blues’ manager. After the poorly-handled saga involving the Chelsea medical staff, including Eva Carneiro, Mourinho saw his side thrashed 3-0 by Manchester City. This means that the champions have just a single point after the first two weeks of the season. Of course, it is early days and there is plenty of time to turn things around. A good side doesn’t become a bad one overnight. But West Brom manager Tony Pulis would have noted the unprecedented half-time substitution of club captain John Terry, who was exposed by the explosive pace of Sergio Aguero, Raheem Sterling and Jesus Navas. The Blues are nowhere near as tight at the back as they were last season. But the Baggies — with also one point from two matches so far — are nowhere near the calibre of the Blues. This looks like a bounceback game for the visitors. Prediction: West Brom 1-3 Chelsea

Everton vs Manchester City These two teams that are coming off 3-0 victories, face off at Goodison Park. Everton seems to have re-found its groove of two seasons ago, under Roberto Martinez, while City has similarly returned to its best. This match could boil down to the personal battle between the Toffees’ striker Romelu Lukaku — scorer of a first-half double at Southampton last weekend — and revitalised City captain Vincent Kompany. On his day, Kompany could well be the best defender in the League. If the home side can survive the early storm likely to hit them — from a side high on confidence — they could share the points with the 2013-2014 champions. Prediction: Everton 2-2 Manchester City

You staged “the adventures of the mad chinaman” twice in 2011. What prompted you to RE-stage the show this year? It was an offer from the Esplanade. I did the first run [in 1989] there, and they liked it very much. This story is about my own world and experiences but there are similarities to Singapore celebrating its anniversary.

How will this “Upsized” version be different? This time, the venue is so much bigger. It was in a recycled studio last time, and now it’s a concert hall. Previously, it had only one piano. Now, I’m filling it up with a band. The previous concerts featured my musical journey from the ‘60s to the ‘80s. This time, I’ve extended it to what happened when I went to Japan, Hong Kong and so on. This is also a show about the Singaporean identity and how it affected my career as Singapore changed.

The Mad Chinaman was your alter ego. Who is he, and what has happened to him? The Mad Chinaman is someone who is confused about his identity, and it’s enough to make him go crazy. Right now, I’m more sure of myself as a Singaporean. I’m able to express myself as a Singaporean. So he’s not so mad anymore but still crazy — in terms of fun!

Other than “The Mad Chinaman Upsized” and SG50 projects, what have you been busy with? Where do I begin? The LKY Musical just opened [ed’s note: the show ended its run on Aug 16], and I’m directing Beauty World next — I’m excited about that. This year has been very jammed because of SG50.

That’s a lot of work. I cannot say no! Every project is very meaningful to me.

How was your experience filming the channel 5 variety show “Rolling Good Times”? That was a great experience. Strangely, the first two seasons were produced in the ‘90s when I was living in Japan, so I’ve never seen it. But everyone I knew was talking about it and thought it was great. So when the idea came back, there was lots of enthusiasm. So many people actually stayed home to watch it on Sunday night! That’s quite rare nowadays. They’re going to do another one next year — that was my idea. It’ll be quite different and it’s going to be interesting!

Your works are intertwined with Singapore’s history. Is it a conscious effort or does it just flow? Before, when I wasn’t so sure of my identity in my music, I made a very conscious effort to infuse a Singaporean-ness within the music. That was really hard, because what was the Singaporean identity anyway?

Amid a busy day of conference calls for the National Day Parade and speaking to the press, Dick Lee sat down with me in Dancing Crab, a Cajun seafood restaurant he coowns. From creating sold-out musical productions to becoming a restaurateur, Dick is a true Renaissance man and go-getter, who many locals love to see more from. Dick, who first shot to regional fame with the album, “The Mad Chinaman” in 1989, revealed to me the method behind his ‘madness’.

Dick Lee is widely regarded as Singapore’s theatre and music maestro, including for his immensely-popular national song “Home”

right now, i’m more sure of myself as a singaporean. i’m able to express myself as a singaporean. so the mad chinaman is not so mad anymore but still crazy - in terms of fun! I used to try different things; for example, using ethnic instruments to create an East-meets-West thing. But Singapore is more than East meets West; it’s something that comes from inside. I spent most of my career looking for it and experimenting. Now, with the confidence I have gained, I found that whatever I write is Singaporean. I must believe in it, and I feel confident enough that it comes across anyway — I don’t have to try very hard.

If you could re-stage a popular musical in Singapore style, which would it be? Beauty World, which I’m doing soon. That is a very special show for me as it was my first musical, and also one of the first Singaporean musicals. I’m directing it this time, so I’m going to present my vision of it.

It seems like you’re a real renaissance man. What ideas might you be toying with now? I’m going to be directing my first movie next year. It’s part of a trilogy. The first was a play last year called “Rising Son”, about my father as a teenager during the Japanese Occupation. The second play is called “Dancing Girl”, about my mother growing up. And then the third one — the movie — is about me, inspired by my experiences in the ‘70s. It’s all about growing up with the different periods of Singapore.

By Pamela Chow Dick Lee composed the theme song “Our Singapore” for National Day 2015. His show, Dick Lee: The Adventures of the Mad Chinaman Upsized will be held on Sep 3 at the Esplanade Concert Hall.

Turning Pixar

ATTACK ON TITAN (PART 1) [NC16]

inside out Has Pixar come full circle to its original approach, focusing on childhood, feelings and tear-jerking storytelling?

Inside Out is an animated and humorous look at the pains of growing up

HITMAN: AGENT 47 [TBA] Agent 47 is an elite assassin who is genetically engineered to be the perfect killing machine. His latest target is a mega corporation that plans to create an army of killers with powers that surpass even his own. He has to team up with a young woman who may hold the secret to overcoming their deadliest enemies. Large portions were shot in Singapore. STARRING: Rupert Friend, Hannah Ware, Zachary Quinto & Ciaran Hinds GENRE: Action, Adventure RELEASE: 20 Aug

I

t all began when Pixar introduced to us the wild idea that toys have feelings in the animation studio’s debut film, Toy Story, in 1995. Then, bugs, monsters, fish, Parisian rats, and even cars, had feelings too. Now — hold on to your seats for this one — feelings have feelings. Who would have guessed? Over in America, Inside Out, which grossed over US$91 million ($127.5 million) in its opening weekend, has already become Hollywood’s biggest original film debut, dethroning recent blockbusters such as Jurassic World and Marvel’s Ant-Man. Despite Pixar’s success in the commercial world, its back-to-basics approach with Inside Out stokes the flames of nostalgia in slightly older viewers, who grew up on the goodness of the likes of talking toys and lost fish.

WOMAN IN GOLD [TBA]

Growing Pains vs Deeper Growth Inside Out follows 11-year-old Riley, who is uprooted from Minnesota and has to adjust to her new life in San Francisco. In the cockpit of her mind, Joy (voiced by Amy Poehler of “Saturday Night Live”) is missing, and Anger (Lewis Black), Fear (Bill Hader) and Disgust (Mindy Kaling) have taken over. In other words, Riley’s going through puberty. Inside Out is an animated and humorous look at the pains of growing up, which even kids can relate to and enjoy. Yet, there’s something strangely nostalgic about the movie for us adults. Perhaps it’s the way childhood and loss are explored not so literally, such as in Toy Story where the attachment to toys symbolises our attachment to childhood innocence — something that we must eventually leave behind. With Inside Out, we’re not taken on a journey with Riley per se. Rather, we are given the opportunity to delve into her mind and her being, to understand and experience her thoughts and feelings through other animated characters — possibly bringing us to a deeper realisation of our own emotions too.

The animation follows 11-year-old Riley, as she adjusts to her new life in San Francisco

It’s Okay to Not Be Okay? In Riley’s mind, Joy is the do-gooder. She is always eager to fix things and see situations from a positive point of view. But she is by no means the most valuable player. Actress and comedian Poehler, popular for her role of Leslie in “Parks and Recreation”, explains that the central message of Inside Out is that it’s okay to be sad. She said, “In fact, sadness may get you where you need to be.” “It’s a very revolutionary idea, especially for parents who are constantly obsessed with their children’s happiness, and in doing so, don’t often allow them to be in the moment and feel their feelings, and it’s a great thing for children to understand, too,” she explained. The “it’s okay to be your odd self” motto is a common thread in many Pixar films, from the gourmet-loving rat Remy in Ratatouille (2007) to the redneck tractor Mater in Cars (2006). But Inside Out takes that idea and refines it to get to the core – sometimes it’s okay to be out of it and to be unsure of who you are.

The central message of Inside Out is that it’s okay to be sad

Coming Full Circle with a New Approach The message was conveyed in Toy Story, which focused on alpha toy Buzz Lightyear’s discovery that he isn’t a real space ranger and in A Bug’s Life (1998), where a beta worker ant has to accept his place in his colony. Though this theme seemed to have been sidetracked in the next few Pixar films, it has now returned in an emotionallyriveting incarnation. Riley isn’t feeling okay, and neither are her parents. Maybe you’re not feeling okay right now either. And that’s okay sometimes. Moreover, it’s funny to see what the adults in a stressful situation might be thinking and feeling — here are opportunities for a good chuckle without having to explain too much to the kids. Whether you’re the sort to think deeply (perhaps like how I’ve done here) or you’re simply looking for a good laugh and cry, Inside Out is the animation of the year to catch. It may just stir up an emotion or two in you.

The Pizza Planet delivery truck has appeared in every single Pixar movie (except The Incredibles). It appears three times in Inside Out. See if you can spot it! Riley’s lean and shaggy-haired “dream boyfriend” is inspired by Harry Styles of English pop group One Direction. You can spot moments from old Pixar movies, mostly from Up, in the blurry orbs of Riley’s subconscious.

Which duck is worth your buck?

The Peking Duck from House of Roasted Duck had delectably crispy skin and paired well with the handmade flour crepe

From internationallyfamous names to old local favourites, these roasted duck establishments have their own following – which are worth your buck? With one roasted meat establishment being sold for $4 million and another claiming to offer the ‘Wagyu’ of duck, it appears that Singaporeans are spoilt for choice when searching for good, authentic roasted duck. Recently more duck-centric restaurants have been opening new restaurants or branches here, and drawing snaking queues, but we at Weekender can’t help but wonder how well they all measure up. We size up the competitors, new and old favourites, and tell you which duck is worth your buck.

Min Jiang at One-North If you’re looking for an authentic Peking Duck experience, you can find it at Min Jiang at One-North. The duck ($98) — cooked in a wood-fired oven, no less — is carved at your table-side, tempting you with each waiting moment. You’ll barely be able to wait to dig into its crispy skin with fine granulated sugar. The combination melted easily and tasted beautiful. Dou miao and orange crepes are also available as part of Min Jiang’s “A Beijing Duck Affair”, which runs from now to Sep 30. We liked the former, a light green crepe with blanched pea shoots encasing sliced duck, and with crispy bean curd skin and sweet sauce. 5 Rochester Park

Dou miao and orange crepes are also part ot Min Jiang’s Peking Duck set

chef’s secret duck roasting technique works wonders — each bite tasted well-marinated and tender, though we’d prefer more sauce drizzled over the meat. Apart from duck, sink your teeth into some black pepper duck buns ($4.80), reminiscent of Tim Ho Wan’s baked char siew buns. 6 Scotts Rd, #B1-16/17 Scotts Square, Scotts Square, 228209

House of Roasted Duck The homely restaurant under the Gao Ji Food umbrella brings you the familiar tastes of Hong Kong. The kitchen is headed by Chef Lau Wai Keung from Hong Kong, who has more than 40 years of culinary experience. We were especially impressed by the Peking Duck, which had delectably crispy skin that paired well with the handmade flour crepe. Dipped into the chef’s special homemade sauce, it tasted even better. At $52 for a whole duck, House of Roasted Duck offers one of the most affordable Peking ducks around. 233 Victoria Street, Bugis Village

Black Pepper London Duck Bun

London Fat Duck The word is that this Hong Kong style restaurant serves the ‘Wagyu’ of duck. But don’t be mistaken — this isn’t an outlet of the acclaimed Fat Duck restaurant in Bray, England. Nonetheless, London Fat Duck claims to dish up the best Irish duck, inspired by the roast styles of Four Seasons and Gold Mine at Bayswater, London. We recommend the Signature Roast Duck ($48.80), a succulent rendition with the crispiest skin we’ve had. The Hong Kong

Four Seasons Chinese Restaurant Originating from London, Four Seasons Chinese Restaurant is famous for Cantonesestyle roast duck. We warn you, queues at its Capitol Piazza outlet are known to be long every day. Many reviewers say that The Special Four Seasons Roasted Duck ($68) is more wet than crisp, though the herbal soy sauce marinade comes through fairly well. The char siew, caramelised to perfection, seems to be more popular than its signature dish. 13 Stamford Road, Capitol Piazza, #02-27/28/29, Singapore 178905

Kay Lee’s sauces complemented the meat well

Kay Lee Roast Meat Joint Having been sold for a whopping $4 million, one can’t help but wonder if the famous Kay Lee Roast Meat Joint has sold out to commercialism while compromising on its heritage and quality. Kay Lee’s roast duck ($50 for whole) is done in the Cantonese style (versus the Peking Duck style). While the skin was slightly crispy, I found the meat a tad dry. Nonetheless, the braised duck gravy and the plum sauce were great and complemented the dish well. Whether you’re a long-time fan of Kay Lee or someone who’s heard much about it and eager to try what it has to offer, Kay Lee’s char siew is still as fantastic as ever. With its slightly-charred exterior and a sweet, caramelised taste, it’s sure to send you to seventh heaven. This is apparently a result of the lady boss’ top secret recipe and technique that made the business worth so much. Once again, we’re not a fan of the duck but the char siew is heavenly. 125 Upper Paya Lebar Road & other outlets By Samantha Francis

Special summer flavours at Nadaman Kaiseki ryouri gets a refreshing interpretation at one of Singapore’s best Japanese restaurants

Each dish exquisitely reflected the refreshing taste, texture and flavours of the season

Classics never go out of style and one of Singapore’s grand dames of Japanese fine dining, Nadaman, is no exception. With summer in full swing, my dining companions and I tried the special summer kaiseki ryouri (from $165 for dinner) at the Shangri-La Singapore restaurant on a recent visit. True to Nadaman’s reputation, each dish exquisitely reflected the refreshing taste, texture and flavours of the season. Dining in the restaurant was also an elegant affair. At the main dining hall, where we sat, each table is nicely spaced apart and surrounded by a Zen affair of smooth stone pebbles and greenery. There is also a sushi bar and a teppanyaki counter, for those who prefer to sit a little closer to the chefs.

Velvety Tofu Goodness Our first course, the Hokkaido tofu, set the standard for the rest of the meal and was a hit with everyone. The bean curd, infused with the sweetness of uni (sea urchin) was luxurious, yet mellow. Its creaminess went extremely well with the crunchy and refreshing okra (ladies’ fingers). Next up was the sashimi dish, comprising hamo (pike conger), karei (flounder) and chuu-toro (medium-fatty tuna). Of the three, the karei made the deepest impression. Sliced from a live fish, the white, translucent sashimi (which was paired with a delicate ponzu sauce) had a firm, snappy bite and a sweet, clean flavour. The chuu-toro’s texture was also impeccable with its velvety smoothness.

But the best part of the dish was not the succulent meat. It was the generous sprinkling of fish scales on top of the fish. Yes, you read that right — fish scales. Crispy and deep-fried to perfection, the edible scales had a delightfully light crunch that was almost surreal. This savoury dish went well with its accompaniments, which included a juicy tomato, fresh, sweet corn and a thick bitesized chunk of abalone. The Wagyu, which came as part of the second-last course was excellent too. It arrived almost rare, with only the edges of the meat pan-fried, showing off the beef’s brilliant crimson red and slight marbling. Each slice, marinated simply with garlic salt, was juicy and flavourful. Unfortunately, dessert was not this kaiseki’s strongest suit. After the elaborate meal, I was expecting an equally sweet and well-thoughtout ending to the meal. However, only cut fruit (two slices of Japanese pears and a Kyoho grape) was served. Nonetheless, the natural sweetness of the fruit shone through and was the perfect way to round up the lavish meal. Nadaman, Shangri-La Hotel Singapore, 22 Orange Grove Rd

Edible Fish Scales The yakimono, or grilled item, was also a winner. Amabi (tilefish) was first deep-fried before being grilled, resulting in a crispy, yet juicy, fish.

Putien’s tales of tradition The Chinese restaurant impresses us with dishes that are simple, yet each is an experience with its own story Dining at Putien can feel like the beautiful unravelling of a period drama. The signature dishes come with their own cultural stories, traced to the restaurant’s namesake, a coastal suburb in Fujian.

Blessed with bountiful harvests from land and sea, we were told that modern Putien cuisine carries that same essence of freshness and simplicity in its ingredients of choice. Unpretentiousness aside, we wondered if the dishes would have enough panache to warrant a return visit or more.

Shaped like a delicate lotus, the thin and translucent slices of iced bitter gourd go well with the lycée honey sauce

A Refreshing Way to Beat the Heatwave We arrived at Putien with beads of perspiration on our foreheads, and we were thankful to be welcomed by its Summer Relief menu — a selection of ‘cooling’ foods, which supposedly helps to counter the blistering heat. First, we were served Ice Cucumber Seedlings ($6.90), a simple dish of cucumber seedlings presented on a bed of ice. Contrary to their unassuming appearance, these seedlings were crisp and sweet, and went well with the signature spicy sauce. This could become an addictive healthy snack, I thought. Next, an arty dish of Iced Bitter Gourd ($5.90) wowed us in the form of a lotus flower, and smartphone cameras were immediately whipped out to snap photos. Each slice of bitter gourd was thin and translucent and when dipped in the accompanying honey, it was a toothsome and refreshing respite from the weather.

my companions thought it was rather ordinary. I felt that Putien’s rendition was chewy and not overly saccharine.

Hospitality from the Heart Overall, we were impressed by the attentive service and how knowledgeable the serving staff were — they gladly regaled us with background stories of the dishes. Our party felt that Putien is a good choice for dining, with its classy interiors and thoughtful dishes. As for me, you can be sure I’ll be back again.

Comfort Food to Nourish Your Body Lest you think it’s all greens at Putien, its menu has other stand-out dishes such as the Putien Heng Hwa Bee Hoon ($8.90, small). According to legend, an old couple hand-dries the bee hoon at the crack of dawn, ensuring that it is fine and chewy but not brittle. With this tale in mind, we tucked into our bee hoon, which was light yet flavourful with the rich stock of pork bones and chicken (mainly using old hens). The fine vermicelli was made scrumptious with a generous portion of prawns, clams and crunchy seaweed, and could easily suffice as a meal on its own. Other well-executed creations included the Stir Fried Yam ($12.90, small), which was crisp on the surface and fluffy underneath, as well as the Braised Beancurd with Chinese cabbage ($17.90, small) — a nourishing broth flavoured with seasonal clams from Putien. I enjoyed the Sweet & Sour Pork with Lycées ($12.90) in particular, though some of

INGREDIENTS (Serves 2-4 people) For the Roast Chicken • 2 pieces Chicken thigh • 1 sprig Rosemary • 1 sprig Thyme • 1 tsp Paprika • 1 tsp Cajun spice • Salt to taste For the Croutons • 2 slices A good sourdough loaf, cut into 1.5cm cubes For the Dressing • 100g Japanese mayonnaise • 2 cloves Garlic, crushed • 5 drops Tabasco sauce • Juice from half a lemon For the Salad • 1 head Lettuce, or a mix of your favourite lettuce

• 1 • 1 • 100g

METHOD

Cucumber, peeled, seeded & diced punnet Cherry tomatoes, washed & halved Labne cheese (or any of your favourite cheeses)

1. Marinate the inside of the chicken thigh with rosemary, thyme, paprika, salt and Cajun spice. 2. In a non-stick frying pan, place the chicken, skin side down, and cook on low heat until the skin turns a crisp golden brown. There is no need to add any oil as the chicken has enough natural fat. 3. Flip over and cook for two minutes on the other side until golden brown. Transfer the chicken to a plate to rest. For the Croutons Using the same frying pan, sauté the bread in the oils that have been released by the cooked chicken, until golden brown. Drain off any excess fat by transferring the croutons onto paper towels. For the Salad Simply mix all the dressing ingredients together. To serve, chop the cooked chicken up and toss it with the salad, croutons and dressing.

The Nino Franco Grave Di Stecca 2010 ‘s vineyard enjoys a special microclimate

The bubbly delight behind Italy’s Prosecco wine Champagne may be seen as the king of sparkling wine but the Italians are giving the French a run for their money. At the foothills of the Alps in north-eastern Italy is a region called Veneto. This is where some of the oldest wineries in Italy are giving champagne a run for the money in global markets, with their own bubbly — Prosecco. Like champagne, which is sparkling wine from the Champagne region of France, Prosecco is classified as a “Protected Designation of Origin” product. This classification for Prosecco is granted only to sparkling wines made from Glera grapes cultivated from Valdobbiadene and Conegliano in Italy using the Charmat process. There are a few different ways to make wonderful sparkling wines. Between champagne and Prosecco, only two are used: Méthode Champenoise for champagne and Metodo Italiano (Charmat process) for Prosecco. The difference is in the fermentation process.

Methode Champenoise With Methode Champenoise, the wine undergoes primary fermentation in the vat and, after bottling, a second fermentation within the bottle. This is a costlier and more exacting process because the amount of sugar in the bottle has to be right for fermentation, and it takes over a year to complete. As a result, champagne has more pressure in the bottle, higher alcohol content and more complexity.

Charmat Process Prosecco is fermented in stainless steel vats and bottled without additional fermentation. It’s a simpler, faster and more economical process. Because there is no bottle fermentation, it’s generally best to drink Prosecco when the wine is young. The exception is premium Proseccos – typically vintage and can last for three years or so.

Three Prominent Proseccos Primo introduced me to Nino Franco’s Rustico Prosecco NV, Primo Franco 2014, and Grave di Stecca 2010. The Rustico is a multi-vintage (mixed from different years’ wines) Prosecco, from Glera grapes, grown on the hillside at medium elevation. It is straw-coloured, has fine bubbles and an alcohol content of 11 per cent. It tasted fruity and sweet, while its foaminess was quite velvety and created a nice sensation on the palate. The Primo Franco 2014, with an alcohol content of 10.5 per cent, is a vintage but should be enjoyed quite quickly. It has a more intense bouquet with complex fruit and grape flavours and is much sweeter. Lastly, Nino Franco Grave Di Stecca 2010 is a brut vintage Prosecco, which Primo considers grand cru (meaning “great growth”; signifying good vineyard reputation) with alcohol content of 12 per cent. According to the vintner’s description, it is made from ancient vines “on the slopes at the foot of the Pre-Alps” and “this vineyard enjoys a special microclimate”. The bubbly tasted less sweet and heavier than the rest but still lighter than champagne. Among the three, it also had fuller flavours, especially of ripe fruit and herbs.

Alternative to Champagne? Whether it’s deserved or not, champagne brings prestige to special occasions — at a price. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the Prosecco. Not only were they refreshing and full of flavours, Prosecco is also lighter on the wallet. Bubbly is no longer just for special occasions.

The world has an insatiable appetite. A global mindset that voraciously seeks out the latest, greatest, biggest, fastest. We can’t help ourselves; it’s human nature. But for us in Singapore, it’s a more than just a credo — it’s a survival instinct that has been drummed into us from birth. When your country is but a “little red dot” (that often has to be enlarged just to be visible on a typical map page), it goes without saying that you do your utmost to stand out, to set yourself apart. To an extent, At-Sunrice GlobalChef Academy was founded on a similar premise. From the start, we were determined to succeed. But we never set out to be the biggest, just the best. We are dedicated to advancing the culinary arts and F&B profession with integrity and meaning. We’ve worked very hard to build a foundation as a unique Singaporean brand of culinary education that would be far-reaching and promote our little red dot. We teach culinary skills and knowledge in East and West, old and new world cuisines, herbs and spices, innovation and technology. Our 18-month diploma programmes feature synchronised “study & apprentice” postings that deliver exceptional educational experiences with marquee establishments such as the RitzCarlton and Raffles Hotel. Other establishments include awardwinning restaurants such as Bacchanalia and Candlenut, and forward-looking organisations like Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, which showed its commitment to culinary nutrition via its very own rooftop garden. You can continue on one of our degree pathways to quality universities in the USA, UK, Australia and very soon, Hong Kong.

Bayalage is still popular among Kimage’s clients

Prettify your mane with babylights, lobs and blowouts There are no ugly women, only lazy ones, cosmetics guru Helena Rubinstein once said. These days, however, even lazy women don’t have to be ugly ones, thanks to the latest hair colouring techniques and treatments that aim to help you achieve breezy, fuss-free and low maintenance looks.

Colour me trendy Hair colour trends come and go, but you must have heard of colouring techniques such as highlights, ombre, and balayage. And now, there’s a new kid in town taking the industry by storm, adorably termed babylights. As with its predecessor trends, babylights is yet another colouring technique that takes on an au naturel route. The style, which weaves super-fine streaks of colour around hair ends, has gained popularity for its ability to mimic the sun-kissed tones of a beach lover’s mane without veering too far from your natural hue. Salons in Singapore which have caught onto this trend include Blow+Bar which recently launched their range of sun-kissed colour styles. Their signature look, “Aura”, features the babylights colouring technique. But devotees to the bayalage — a type of freehand highlighting technique — worried that the look as gone obsolete can heave a sigh of relief. Hair salon chain, Kimage, says that the trend is still as popular as before. In fact, babylights can be considered a new balayage technique, as their super fine highlights are painted on by hand as well. “There are so many finishes that balayage can create, from soft natural highlights to something stronger and edgier. Clients love it because it is low maintenance and there is no obvious regrowth line,” said Kimage director Monica Tan.

I woke up like this Whether you opt for the bayalage or babylights, a

perfect hairstyle for their sun-kissed looks is the lob, short for a long bob cut, the current style of choice for celebrities Taylor Swift and Karlie Kloss. Faces are automatically slimmed with the lob’s blunt cut and shoulder sweeping ends. Wear it either straight or wavy, depending on your hair mood that day. For those who want to take hair maintenance one step further, but are unwilling to spend the extra time wrestling with a hair dryer and brush, there are now fuss-free options to getting that beautiful mane. Try Blow+Bar’s permanent blow out, a natural perm that lasts up to six months and gives you effortlessly natural waves which require minimal styling. Best of all, it also comes in 10 signature looks so you can find the curl that best complements your face shape. Prices for ladies’ blow outs start from $273. Want sleek, smooth and straight locks? Give hair treatments a try. Kimage offers a range of hair treatments, such as the keratin treatment (from $300) which helps to soften and smoothen hair, making it more manageable. The straightening effect lasts for around three months and leaves you with neatly-coiffed hair — as well as the luxury of more snooze time. For a more complete overhaul of your frizzy locks, head over to Salon Vim, which pioneered the Texture Control treatment ($590). Developed by the salon’s co-founder, Gary Chew, this treatment aims to help you transform your hair’s texture and leave it frizz-free and beautifully silky, almost with a sheen on it. Now, you can truly say you woke up like this! By Samantha Francis

Child throwing a tantrum? Here’s what to do Staying calm and not yelling can go a long way When it comes to handling your child’s temper tantrum, the key is to stay calm. As helpless as you may feel towards handling your child’s screams and wails, take a deep breath and tell yourself that you are able handle the situation. However, if your spouse is around and a lot calmer than you, allow him or her to manage the child, said programme development and innovation specialist, Felisa Fernandez. Ms Fernandez, who teaches at enrichment centre Learning Horizons, will be speaking at this year’s Rise & Shine Festival on how parents can better appreciate their children. Approach the child with a hug and say, “I know you’re upset right now and I would like to help you make you feel better. However, I can’t help you when you are crying like this. I need you to be calm so you can talk to me and I can understand what you are saying.” However, if hugging is not what the child needs at that point, then give him or her a time out, added Ms Fernandez. The time out for a child varies according to his or her age. For example, a three-year-old would need three minutes and a four-year-old will need four minutes, she said.

BE GENTLE BUT FIRM Before imposing the time out, explain to the child, in a gentle, but firm voice, that he or she will need to sit it out and stop crying so that you are able to find out what’s wrong with him or her. Once the time out is over, speak to the child gently and ask if he or she is ready to speak. Acknowledge the effort made by the child by saying: “I see that you have managed to calm down and stop crying. That’s really a great thing to do and I really appreciate your effort.” Then, thank and hug the child.

Why children behave badly Often, bad behaviour in a child arises because of underlying reasons. These reasons can be broadly attributed to three categories: physical (is the child not feeling well?), emotional (did a friend hurt the child’s feelings?) and language inabilities (can a child communicate his or her needs?), said Ms Fernandez.

In handling these behaviours, the first rule of thumb is to show your child that you are there to support him or her. However discipline may be needed at times. When it comes to discipline, parents need to set boundaries and provide behavioural guidelines for their child, said Ms Fernandez. For example, telling him or her that it is wrong to bully a younger sibling Next, inform the child of the consequences of not obeying these guidelines. Such a strategy makes it easier to manage the child when he or she misbehaves. Ms Fernandez said, “When parents establish consistent positive and negative consequences, kids know what to expect. “And it is only when kids feel safe that they also feel more confident about trying new activities and exploring their talents. “Positive parenting is a great way to ensure that kids learn how to have confidence.”

This year’s Rise & Shine Festival features exciting and enriching activities for both parents and kids. Photo: Rise & Shine

Parents should ideally work with their pre-schooler’s natural traits, such as curiosity, if they want their children to achieve a good head start in life. And a simple walk in the park could be part of what it takes to do so, said Mrs Teh-Ng Cheng Khim, a lecturer at the Asian International College’s School of Education. The walk, she explains, can build on a pre-schooler’s natural curiosity, helping them learn how they can better interact with their environments. A pre-schooler can even pick up language skills through such walks, when parents, say, introduce words by talking to them about the different types of leaves around.

Correct attitudes Often, children learn best through positive bonding with their parents. “As the saying goes, ‘children are chips off the old blocks’. Kids model and learn from their parents. Parents’ attitudes and efforts will determine their child’s learning abilities,” said Ms Teh-Ng, who will be speaking at one of the parenting seminars at the Rise & Shine Festival 2015. (see box story) Parents need to ensure that they have enough time to look after their child’s learning and development — this means ensuring a balance among family, work and life. They also need to understand their children’s areas of interest as this will invariably arouse a kid’s curiosity and eagerness to learn, she adds. For example, if a child shows interest in animals, then a visit to the zoo can help to motivate learning. “Do emphasise the process of interactive learning rather than its end result. The bond of learning between parents and children will definitely be a more fruitful one, as long parents try to accommodate their children’s learning abilities,” said Ms Teh-Ng.

Rise & Shine Festival 2015 Touted as Asia’s largest enrichment and play festival, this year’s Rise & Shine Festival features exciting and enriching activities for both parents and kids. There will be an expanded line-up of stage activities, in-booth programmes, meet-and-greet sessions with popular cartoon figures such as Elmo and Cookie Monster, and educational kids’ trial classes hosted by educators such as British Council. Parents can look forward to seminars on key concepts in modern day parenting conducted by pre-school educators like Lorna Whiston and Learning Horizon. Nailing the challenge Produced by talk show icon Ellen DeGeneres, HGTV’s reality show will change how you see furniture and interior design You will never see furniture the same way again after watching Ellen Degeneres’ new reality TV show, “Ellen’s Design Challenge”. The HGTV show puts six talented furniture designers to the ultimate test in Los Angeles as they compete in various challenges in furniture construction and design. The catch? Everything has to be completed in only 24 hours.

Watch six talented designers overcome challenging obstacles to produce revolutionary furniture designs

W

hen working on this 6,000sqft detached house, the team from Third Avenue Studio wanted to focus on designing spaces that are luxurious but not excessive. By paring down the material and colour choices and practicing a restrained hand when it came to design elements, the designers gave this three-storey house a look that was simple yet sophisticated.

STARS WHO COME IN HANDY Each contestant will be equipped with a workshop, a lead carpenter and basic tools. They will also be assisted by an additional team of HGTV handymen made up of the channel’s television personalities: Jeff Devlin, Brooks Utley, Karl Champley, Chip Wade, David Sheinkopf and Matt Muenster. See how each participant overcomes obstacles like conflicts, game-changing twists and unconventional material to produce extraordinary yet functional furniture pieces. Contestants will be eliminated one by one via a panel of expert judges, including designer Christiane Lemieux, editor Amanda Dameron, furniture manufacturer Jason Chauncey and celebrity interior designer Cliff Fong. Hosting the show is actor Jay Montepare, and viewers can also look forward to special appearances by DeGeneres, who serves as the show’s executive producer. Brought to you by HGTV. “Ellen’s Design Challenge” airs every Thursday at 9pm on HGTV, Starhub channel 437

A neutral colour palette in the living room welcomes the homeowners, setting the scene for a relaxed and laidback atmosphere. Because of the room’s large size, the Third Avenue Studio design team wanted to prevent the space from feeling cold or uninviting. The strips of wood that made up the TV feature wall contribute to this sense of homeliness by visually grounding the space.

Fit For Entertainment For homeowners that entertain a lot, having a combined dining room and dry kitchen makes a lot of sense. Here, the designers created the perfect room for both dinner parties and casual gatherings. There’s a fully equipped kitchen — complete with an all-marble kitchen island — where the homeowners can play host, and a solid wood dining table that’s big enough to accommodate at least eight guests.

All in White Heavier cooking and more complicated dishes are whipped up in the wet kitchen at the back of the house. Although functionality was the main priority, the design team from Third Avenue Studio retained the clean linear aesthetics that defined the rest of the home. As such, all-white glossy laminates clad the surfaces of the kitchen cabinets to create a pristine space. The island counter in the centre of the room doubled as both a worktop and an impromptu dining table.

Suite Life The bedroom suite on the upper level has been designed to be as self-contained as possible. Thanks to its large size, the designers could fit in an en suite bathroom, a walk-in wardrobe and even a lounge area with an entertainment system. Polished parquet floors stretch across the entire suite and is crucial to making the bedroom feel warm and cosy. Most notably however, is the feature wall behind the bed. It’s made from padded panels in different shapes and sizes that fit together to cover the wall completely.

Marble Marvel Bathrooms are usually dark and dingy places, but this one benefits greatly from the large window at the far end of the room. To emphasise the flood of natural light, the designers cladded the walls and countertop with white marble. The result is an uplifting room that is perfect for relaxed ‘me time’. Available at Oppo Concept Store Comedian Suhaimi Yusof loves his gadgets and video apps You may have seen Suhaimi Yusof’s hilarious television commercials promoting the launch of Singapore’s digital TV campaign or enjoyed his swaggering antics as reporter Jojo Joget on Channel 5’s current affairs satire, The Noose. But beyond his funnyman persona, which he says spills over in real life, Suhaimi, 46, is very much a tech guy at heart. A quick glance at his Facebook page reveals twice-daily posts, on average, of his hilarious — and sometimes poignant — takes in life. He even has a Youtube page featuring his own homemade comedy skits and adventures. Does this man ever rest? Weekender talks to Suhaimi to find out more.

Hi, Suhaimi. What have you been busy with lately? I’m currently filming The Noose and several telemovies and programmes for Suria, Channel 5 and Okto. I’ll also have a part in Jack Neo’s new movie, Long Long Time Ago, which will be released next year.

We hear you are very adept at video apps. I used to edit television programmes using sophisticated machinery, so I am naturally excited by editing tools. Because of my background, I only took several minutes to master video apps, including iMovie, and now I use my smartphone to produce travel, food and comedy videos. It’s awesomely fun!

What smartphone are you using now? I use an iPhone6. I won’t even call it a handphone anymore because everything that can be done separately is now tucked into one device. I update Instagram, Facebook, Twitter , and of course, even answer emails in the toilet. LOL!

You started your career as a radio presenter way before social media was born. How has life in showbiz changed for you since then? Back then, radio, to me, was the most responsive tool in the media industry because listeners got to react or give feedback almost immediately via live interviews. Now with social media, audience interactions have been catapulted to light years ahead. Interactions are much, much faster and even intimately personalised.

Now, audiences would like to get to know you as a person instead of seeing you as a personality. While that’s a whole new game altogether, the good thing about it is audiences become friends instead of fans.

So is there anything you miss from the pre-social media days? Privacy of course. There are times where I appreciate isolated moments away from work, but that’s almost impossible to have today because social media is always turned on 24-7. I also miss having face-to-face chats.

If there is one tech invention in your wish list, what would it be? I want to do what Ironman does...create holograms. Just for the fun of it.

You have three teenage kids. What is your parenting style when it comes to your children’s online activities? I don’t believe in being regimental, but I’m not the “anything goes” type of parent too. Being involved in today’s sophisticated social media tools gave me the upper-hand to understand the dos and don’ts of social media. We have regular discussions on the subject and my only two rules for my kids are: Don’t believe anything on the internet immediately; and do not publicise any personal or family details at any cost.

As one of Singapore’s top comedians, what inspires you to stay so funny all the time? I enjoy meeting people and love it when I can put a smile on someone’s face. To me, making someone laugh is not even work. I like to do the same thing on and off-screen. Of course, I have my serious moments like anybody else but then again, why take life so seriously? Chill and have fun. No pressure at all. LOL

If you think that travelling with budget carriers comes with plenty of restraints, the reality may surprise you quite a bit. here are the facts behind flying cheap Be assured — you will not be considered a scrooge for clamouring after cheap airfares. After all, who can resist the draw of flight prices that can run as cheap as $2? But these insanely attractive prices often come with caveats, as you may have realised. Recently, flyers on budget carriers have experienced unwanted disruptions, like 24-hour delays, causing some to think that budget prices beget budget service. So what should you actually expect when you pounce on that cheap flight deal? Here are some hacks and tips for the next time you fly low cost. Expectation: You’re stuck with random

And prices vary, depending on how “good” the seats are. For example, standard seats at Scoot go for under $10, and those with extra legroom can go up to $99*. Take flight at the Johor Air Carnival

Tigerair may offer passengers a full refund if a flight is rescheduled by more than four hours

This compensation, offered by Scoot, Jetstar and Tigerair, typically comes in the form of a travel voucher through www. changeyourflight.com. However, multi-segment and interline trips, and tickets booked through third-party agents, are not eligible for this service.

3 infamous air rage Incidents The men who tried to leave mid-flight

Expectation: You can’t transfer tickets to other people

It’s worrying what some people are thinking (or not)! Last year, a Chinese man reportedly yanked the exit door open just before take-off “to get some fresh air”. And in March this year, another man opened the emergency exit of an aircraft as the plane was taking off, claiming he thought the door handle was a handrail. His actions mimicked that of another traveller at Nanjing Lukou International Airport who did exactly the same thing in February. The traveller’s priceless response? “This door is not important.” Apparently, neither was his safety!

Reality: You can amend your passenger details, sometimes for free Ever had your $10 ticket balloon into $250 just because you needed to correct one small typo in your name? For most budget flights, expect to pay a change fee — at least $60 for Tigerair and from $50 for Jetstar — plus the fare difference at the time of change if you have to make any tweaks to your name or flight times. That’s right. You have to top up the extra amount if the fare for your flight has increased. But no refunds will be made if the airfares are lower than prevailing prices. Tigerair’s website explains its reasoning for this rule: To prevent “resellers from hoarding promotional seats and reselling them at higher prices.” And you can’t escape this charge even if you’re booking with a travel agency. Though the agency can help co-ordinate the flight changes, you’ll still have to pay the change fees to the airlines, explained a spokesperson from online travel agent Ctrip. But here’s some good news: Scoot will let you change your passenger details for free within 12 hours of your booking. However, you’ll still have to top up any fare difference. At AirAsia, names can be edited but tickets are not allowed to be transferred to another passenger. Passengers can change flight timings and dates — but not destinations — for a fee.

Poking fellow passengers with a pen In April, a passenger was removed from a domestic American Southwest Airlines flight for jabbing another passenger with a pen to stop him from snoring. The latter was left with bruises and ink marks on his sleeve. What a rude awakening indeed.

Alec Baldwin kicked off a flight American actor Alec Baldwin (TV’s “30 Rock”) was booted off an American Airlines flight in 2011 after he refused to turn off his phone before take-off. He was playing an “addicting (sic)” word game, and locked himself in the lavatory after the crew told him off. “The passenger was extremely rude to the crew, calling them inappropriate names and using offensive language,” said the company in a statement.

The lesson here: Be meticulous, check your flight information closely, and if you need to amend any details, do it quickly before the fares shoot up! By Pamela Chow

The three-day fair hopes to provide a fun environment for families as well as an exciting arena for competitors. If Legoland and the new Hello Kitty Town are not enough to draw you across the Causeway, the Johor Air Carnival just might.

Activities for everyone The carnival, held between Aug 28 and 30, will feature a plethora of activities, including hot air balloon performances as well as parachute demonstrations. You will even have a chance to ride in a helicopter. There are also competitions, like paper plane and go-kart tournaments, for individuals who want to get their adrenaline pumping. Kids are also not forgotten, with colouring and photography contests included in the carnival’s mix.

The carnival is organised jointly by Nobel Active Sdn Bhd and the South East Asia Airsport Federation (SEAAF). The event hopes to encourage the cultivation of friendships and unity among the community and to introduce air sports as a new and viable hobby for youth. Escape the tedium of everyday life in Singapore and take a short drive, or bus ride, up to Johor. Who knows? The jaunt might be a short enjoyable escape, or even a chance to pick up a hobby you’ve always wanted to try.

With their old alleyways, stone bridges and picturesque surroundings, China’s old towns are worth visiting at least once

in Jiangwan or the beautiful willow trees in Zhujiajiao, two pristine destinations 20 km from Wuyuan and a one-hour bus ride from Shanghai respectively. In Yangshuo, renting a bicycle and cycling to Fuli, 8km from Yangshuo (near Guilin City) is an excellent way to experience this ancient town. The town is surrounded by breathtaking mountains, gorgeous rivers and beautiful scenery, all variables that make every visit (or second visit) a unique experience.

A longer trek

You may have heard them referred to as old towns, ancient towns or ancient villages. Wrapping your head around the variety of China’s highly treasured ancient towns, which can have different sizes, ages and settings, can be somewhat overwhelming. But if you’ve ever had the delightful opportunity of spending time in China, and have visited some of these historic treasures, you may have noticed the similarities they share.

While some towns require a longer travel time, creating a journey within a journey, others can be visited on a day trip from most major cities. Zhouzhuang Water Town, a short 30 km from Suzhou City in Jiangsu Province, can easily be done as a day trip from Suzhou or Shanghai. This ancient town’s well preserved residential houses, said to be more than 900 years old, and gorgeous water canals have earned it the title “Venice of the East.” If you’re on your way to Huangshan (Yellow Mountains) in Anhui Province, Xidi and Hongcun are two must-see ancient towns. Interestingly, Hongcun was designed in the shape of an ox. A pond in the middle of the village captures gorgeous reflections of the surrounding architecture — a truly impressive sight. Hongcun was also the location for one of the fight scenes in the famous film, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000). In a perpetually changing country such as China, ancient towns have become a way to escape from repetitive high-rise buildings, traffic and constant noise. They provide an opportunity to get a meaningful glimpse into China’s past — a reminder that once upon a time, things were different.

Photogenic environments Well-preserved architecture and amazingly photogenic environments are often the biggest draws to these charming towns. China’s ancient towns often harbour history spanning anywhere from a few hundred years to over a thousand. Built in the traditional architectural style of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the ancient dwellings within the town walls are subjects of timeless intrigue. Old alleyways, stone bridges and red lanterns contrasted against black-tiled roofs are all essential features of a classic ancient town. No matter what your travel aspirations are, you’ll find something special in every ancient town — be it in the ancient wells
