The Gladers inch closer to finding the mastermind in the WCKD organisation behind the experiments they have been put through

Maze Runner 2:

Scorcher or mess? Whether you like the Maze Runner novels or last year’s film, this sequel promises more intrigue, action and destructive dangers — but will it survive fans’ ire?

TRAITOR THREATENS ANNIHILATION After spending years plotting and repeatedly attempting their escape, you can imagine how tired the Gladers are, albeit relieved that they have finally escaped. Finally out of the trap, they now find themselves in another devastating arena of lethal obstacles, one that truly pushes them right to the edge. You can be sure that tensions and distrust will boil over. When they hit The Scorch, Thomas and his fellow Gladers meet another group called The Cranks. Our familiar heroes must now work with the new characters to survive the brutal terrain and unravel the mystery behind WCKD’s experiments. Nonetheless, as we all know, things don’t always go as planned and a black sheep in the group complicates matters for everyone. How surprised will you be? You’ll just have to watch to find out.

Above: Our heroes encounter lethal obstacles Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) leads the Gladers as they navigate their way through more trials and intrigue

BIG CHANGES FROM THE BOOK

LOST IN A MAZE OF ACTION?

The first Maze Runner movie opened to generally positive sentiment but also met with grievances from fans of the original novels, as it skipped several scenes that addressed vital information about the group members and WCKD. Now, The Scorch Trials may come under even more fire for a similar ‘sin’. Film review site Movie Pilot stated that director Wes

With all these changes being introduced, it’s understandable that fans of the series fear that the story and character development may be overlooked in place of action. The trailers alone are chock-a-block with running, yelling and explosions. Still, Dashner feels that the movie sequel retains “the mystery, the intrigue, characters themselves and the spectacle of the setting”

BLACK MASS [M18] In the ‘70s, the FBI offer notorious Irish gangster “Whitey” Bulger (Johnny Depp) a collaboration to eliminate the Italian mob. Taking advantage of this unholy alliance, Whitey consolidates his power to become one of the most powerful mobsters in history. STARRING: Johnny Depp, Benedict Cumberbatch, Kevin Bacon & Sienna Miller, GENRE: Action, Drama RELEASE: 17 Sep

Fei Fei (Joi Chua) is a “summon auntie” (parking attendant) who loses her job just as her father’s health deteriorates. To cover his rising medical expenses she joins the National Singing Competition for its cash prize, and to live out her dream. STARRING: Joi Chua, Rahimah Rahim & Shigga Shay GENRE: Drama RELEASE: 17 Sep

Top: Will most of the Gladers survive The Scorch?

Ball has made a number of key changes to the plot, some radically different from the novels by James Dashner. For instance, Thomas and fellow glader Teresa now have the ability to communicate telepathically. If you saw the first movie, you might recall how this ability was inferred from them having similar flashbacks. Another change brought to the big screen is the return of big bad bully Gally, who appears to have survived from the first film. If you look closely in the second official trailer, he can be seen screaming from inside a water tank.

M Night Shyamalan is back with a chilling tale of a brother and sister on a visit to their grandparents’ farm. They discover that the elderly couple is embroiled in something disturbing, and realise that they may not make it back home. STARRING: Kathryn Hahn, Deanna Dunagan & Peter McRobbie GENRE: Horror, Thriller RELEASE: 17 Sep

t the end of the first Maze Runner film, our teenage heroes finally broke out of the glade that was surrounded by a giant maze, and discovered that they were subjects in an experiment by a mysterious organisation known as WCKD. The motley band, led by Thomas (Dylan O’Brien), known as the Gladers, may have overcome the ever-shifting mechanical maze with diabolical spider-like creatures but will it be a classic case of “out of the frying pan and into the fire”? In Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, the proverbial fire is a hot, desolate landscape called The Scorch. You’ll soon see how it got its name.

from his novels, reported Movie Pilot. If you can’t wait for the movie, the second official trailer also gives us a sneak peek into Thomas’ backstory, when he was separated from his mother as a young boy. Can Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials navigate its own labyrinth of action and distracting teenage romance to carry through the suspenseful and poignant story and themes of the novels? From the looks of it, it’s a high possibility.

How would you grade your EPL club so far? Manchester City is currently top of the Premier League report card but if you’re Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, you may need to go for extra tuition

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho can ill afford more excuses Left: Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney scored a hattrick in its Champions League qualifier but has so far failed to score in the Premier League — can he find his form and lift the Red Devils?

Photo: Jaggat Rashidi / Shutterstock.com

Here’s ESPN FC’s report card on the performances of the top clubs over the opening month of the season, in anticipation of this weekend’s fixtures.

playoff, captain Wayne Rooney has gone ten domestic games without scoring, dating back to last season. Though Louis van Gaal has spent extravagantly, there is still an imbalanced look to United’s squad. A surfeit of defensive midfielders stands in contrast to a lack of attractive options up front and in central defence, not to mention uncertainty about the goalkeeping situation. The form of Luke Shaw and Chris Smalling has been encouraging but expect more grumpy media conferences from van Gaal in the lead-up to Christmas.

Prediction: Crystal Palace 1-2 Man City

Manchester United: B The Red Devils’ effortless progress into the group stages of the UEFA Champions League was followed by their first defeat of the season at unfashionable Swansea City. Despite his hat-trick against Club Brugge in the Champions League

Prediction: Man Utd 2-1 Liverpool

Chelsea: C-

Prediction: Everton 2-2 Chelsea

After dazzling critics in preseason, the Gunners have made hard work of almost every game in their Premier League campaign so far. They lost at home to West Ham, were lucky to beat Crystal Palace, and huffed and puffed to a goalless draw with Liverpool before labouring to a 1-0 victory over a Newcastle side reduced to ten men for most of the match. It’s the same old Arsenal — lovely passing and build-up play, but a lack of potency when it really counts. They should be capable of securing their usual third or fourth place finish but what about the serious title challenge that was mooted a few weeks ago? That has already proven

It started so well for Brendan Rodgers’ side. Liverpool safely negotiated an unpleasant opening day trip to Stoke City before getting the job done against newly-promoted Bournemouth. The Week 3 draw at Arsenal was also acceptable. But a feeble 0-3 home defeat to West Ham — its first to the Hammers since The Beatles’ “She Loves You” was top of the charts in 1963 — has put the Reds in a vulnerable position ahead of a series of hellish road trips to Manchester (twice), Chelsea and Tottenham. The good news is, Mario Balotelli has gone to AC Milan.

Jose Mourinho can talk all he wants about “fake results” but the reality is that the defending champions have started with just 4 points from a possible 12, despite a relatively easy fixture list so far. John Terry and Gary Cahill have lost their mojo, Eden Hazard looks like 55-year-old former Chelsea midfielder Micky Hazard and Cesc Fabregas is competing with Wayne Rooney for the disappointment of the league season so far. Nonetheless, though they are already 8 points behind City, there’s still time for the Blues to turn things around. The squad looks better now that emerging defender Kurt Zouma and on-loan striker Radamel Falcao add a different dimension.

Manchester City: A+ Manchester City hasn’t put a foot wrong and sits on the top of the table with four wins from as many matches. After last season’s sometimes lethargic campaign, Manuel Pellegrini’s side has come out with all guns blazing. The seamless introduction of new signing Raheem Sterling from Liverpool — who opened his league scoring account against Watford before the international break — has been a huge plus for the 2013-2014 champions. He’s already developed a good understanding with striker Sergio Aguero. Playmaker David Silva, talisman Yaya Toure and captain Vincent Kompany are all back to their best after looking off-colour at times last season.

LionsXII eager to spoil Rangel’s Terengganu homecoming The LionsXII will have their work cut out for them when they get their 2015 Malaysia Cup campaign going this month — can Fandi and the boys win the coveted trophy? On Sep 26, the LionsXII will make their way to the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium for their Malaysia Cup Group A clash against Terengganu, also known as The Turtles, whom they defeated in May in the Malaysia FA Cup semi-final over two legs. Cut back to the 89th minute of the dramatic second-leg match at the very stadium. Nordin Alias wheels away after putting the ball in the back of the LionsXII net. The Turtles — who were already 3-2 up on the evening — would have reached the final with their fourth goal of the second leg. Coach Fandi Ahmad’s side had edged the first leg 2-1 at the Jalan Besar Stadium.

Photo: FAS

However, that was not to be. Nordin’s goal was disallowed for offside — a decision that caused pandemonium. Terengganu’s Brazilian striker Paulo Rangel’s explosive reaction got him sent off and subsequently suspended from competitive football in June by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), for three months. Argentinian playmaker Gustavo Lopez followed his teammate when he shoved the referee, and their team completed the game with nine men. It took the LionsXII boys a few hours before they could leave the ground, as violent fans set parts of the stadium on fire.

Brazilian Hitman Out for Revenge The return to Terengganu in the Malaysia Cup will be a baptism of fire for the youthful LionsXII team, that has drawn Kedah and Johor Darul Ta’zim II (JDTII) as the other two Group A rivals. The likes of Madhu Mohana and Zulfahmi Arifin will try to contain the prolific Rangel — one of Malaysian domestic football’s top marksmen with 33 goals in the past three seasons — on his return to competitive action, having served his suspension. Strangely, though, the Brazilian has never been in top form against the LionsXII, managing only three goals past Izwan Mahbud in goal.

Canaries & JDTII Ready to Spoil Party While the odds favour Terengganu and the Lions XII to go through to the quarterfinals, Kedah and JDTII have enough in them to cause upsets. The Canaries of Kedah are in buoyant mood, having just secured promotion to the Malaysian Super League (MSL), while JDTII has former LionsXII stars Shahril Ishak and Baihakki Khaizan in its ranks. There could well be one or two giant-killing acts to be expected. From Group A, Kedah or JDTII could rewrite the expected script and bring back the romance of cup competitions.

Sky Blu: Life beyond LMFAO & party rockin’ Before performing at The Podium Lounge’s F1 Singapore Grand Prix afterparty, Sky Blu sets the record straight about his identity and the split of wild duo LMFAO For a self-professed lifelong “class clown”, Skyler Gordy — who goes by his stage name Sky Blu — takes his outlandishness very seriously. Sky Blu is the rapping half of popular duo LMFAO, known for catchy electronic dance hits such as “Party Rock Anthem” and “Sexy and I Know It”. These hits are known for being accompanied by bizarre music videos and flamboyant dance moves. But Sky Blu wants to break out from that old mould. LMFAO has been on hiatus since 2012 and, since then, Sky Blu has been relatively quiet — until now. He will soon be cranking it up in a high-octane performance at The Podium Lounge’s F1 Singapore Grand Prix after-party, on Sep 20. Weekender finds out more about him post-LMFAO, and what fans can expect from a Sky Blu set.

You’ve stated that LMFAO may do an amazing and crazy album. Could you give fans a little teaser? This next project is about me and not about LMFAO, so that is all I am explaining until the LMFAO project is fully into swing. But, rest assured, we have great things planned out.

What upcoming projects of yours can fans look forward to? Make sure to watch out for the United Nations Mixtape featuring 8KY 6LU (Sky Blu) and Sensato with some special guests. LMFAO was known to be over the top. Will you continue that tradition on your own? There are definitely similarities you can find in who I am as a person and who I am in the group. With that said, I definitely have a different energy than LMFAO. I am maybe more aggressive.

How will you exhibit your own style at The Podium Lounge?

Sky Blu is known for his flashy moves and catchy tunes in LMFAO, but he’s about to ramp it up even more now that he’s flying solo

I feed off people’s energy. My job is to make sure that everybody has a good time. So I have to see how the crowd is feeling and I will do something to make them hit the ceiling.

Were you always so zany growing up?

How has life been since LMFAO has been on a break? I’ve focused very intensely on finding who I am as an artist. When the world knows you for doing something, and what is inside of you is a bit different, it seems overwhelming at first to find a way to express yourself. But over time, I have been able to really harness the energy I have inside and I have become a very dynamic performer and artist.

Standing Sushi Bar’s super sushi Look forward to quality meals at affordable prices at this home-grown sushi and Japanese food chain

Fo o d o n TV Talented Malaysian chef Sherson Lian and his mom, Ann, star in this new culinary programme, “Family Kitchen with Sherson”

Family Kitchen with Sherson: Fun family show Gather to watch this cosy cooking show, in which celebrity chef Sherson Lian and his family share new and old culinary secrets Nothing bonds a family like good homecooked food (usually whipped up by the family matriarch), or watching your favourite TV show together. Cosy up with talented Malaysian chef Sherson Lian and his mom, Ann, in a brand new culinary programme. Aptly titled “Family Kitchen with Sherson”, Sherson and mom share favourite family moments in the programme, as well as dish up various delicious blends of old and new Asian cuisine.

Fun & Flavours for the Family The fun family cooking show, “Family Kitchen with Sherson”, premiered on Aug 6. If you’ve missed it, you can catch the repeat telecasts on Asian Food Channel. Watch in delight as Ann shares her favourite traditional recipes while Sherson puts a modern twist on them, incorporating unique contemporary flavours. The mother and son duo kicks off the first episode with a nostalgic touch, as they revisit fond memories of the past with

Let Sherson and his family share with you culinary secrets from the comfort of their own kitchen

their favourite comfort food. Ann cooks up a storm with her Paradise Fried Rice Special Paste — from a dish she cooked at her very first cafe and a catalyst for their family business. Using the spices from this special fried rice, Sherson also creates a modern American Chili Dog recipe, the Coney Dog. If that’s not enough to whet your appetite, he also pays homage to the pancake recipe that Ann used to make for him and his siblings when they were growing up.

Surprises Along the Way

If you like eating good food in a lively ambience or in a restaurant that won’t burn too big a hole in your pocket, Standing Sushi Bar is the place to go. With aluminium chairs and simple wooden tables neatly arranged on a raw cement floor at its Queen Street branch, Standing Sushi Bar is, at first glance, frills-free and nondescript. The food, however, is anything but.

Of Rock Stars & Dragons The sushi rolls, in particular, are delicious, especially the Rockstar Roll ($16.90). The rice was rolled over a generous serving of mozzarella cheese and then topped with seared salmon sashimi and torched mentaiko (made from marinated roe of pollock and cod) sauce. The result? A velvety combination of flavours that blended together marvellously. Those looking for slightly traditional flavours can opt for Puff The Magic Dragon ($18.90), where prawn tempura and cucumber are wrapped with grilled eel and topped with tobiko (flying fish roe). The balanced combination of the umami flavours, soft eel meat and crisp tempura centre was a delight for the palate.

Affordable Luxury The Salmon Aburi Sampler ($20), which consisted of five pieces of blowtorched salmon

The Rockstar Roll had a generous serving of torched mentaiko sauce

sashimi and a crackling slab of fried salmon skin on warm sushi rice, was also a hit with my dining companions. The presentation of the dish was simple, with each nigiri arranged neatly on a clean, white plate. Each piece had a different flavour, ranging from spicy to creamy, and I particularly liked the smoky and smooth flavours of the salmon with mentaiko mayonnaise. We emerged from the restaurant — still a lively, rambunctious full house at 9pm — with satisfied tummies and couldn’t wait to return. With special appearances from Sherson’s siblings and other exciting surprises lined up, you’ll be entertained by the heartwarming and fun antics in the programme. Most importantly, let Sherson and his family share with you culinary secrets from the comfort of their own kitchen.

Whet your Palette at this upscale food court

Cocktails, local favourites and even regional cuisines — Palette’s offerings are hard to top

Palette is a new concept from BreadTalk Group with more than 400 items on a single menu, mainly from popular hawkers or restaurants

From the established BreadTalk Group comes a multi-brand dining concept that doesn’t seem all that new, but is it? For the many of us who frequent Food Republic, Palette Restaurant and Bar might appear to be a gimmicky atas food court, complete with overpriced dishes. However, with ten speciality food brands and more than 400 items on a single menu, mainly from popular hawker or restaurant brands in the region, we were excited for what it could offer.

Goodbye Queues, Hello Table Service Located at the basement of Capitol Piazza, the new hotbed of F&B outlets, is Palette Restaurant and Bar. The 12,000 sq ft dining hall is dressed in a casual-chic interior with a somewhat Euro-Peranakan influence. This decor also distinguishes it from a typical food court. After we were ushered to our seats, we were given a physical menu as well as iPads to place our orders. A friendly waiter was on standby.

Ah Koong’s fish cake will delight you with its crisp outer layer and tasty inside

Big Names All in One Place

The Musical Express cocktail is fruity and creamy without being overwhelmingly rich

Cocktails Along with Hawker Favourites Palette even has a full-fledged bar. Creatively titled 90 Gastro Bar, with the “90” translating to jiu shi (a pun on the words for “wine” and “food”) in Chinese, it offers an extensive range of wines, beers, hard liquor and cocktails. But before you start making happy hour plans, note that the drinks are a bit of a menagerie of hits and misses. I liked the Musical Express ($17), an aromatic potion of pandan and banana-infused rum — a light and creamy drink with a heady scent of fruit. However, the 1686 ($17), a grape-andraspberry-infused gin tribute to the number of seats in the Capitol Theatre, didn’t quite hit the spot for me.

Nonetheless, if you need convincing, there are a few good reasons to patronise Palette. These are the overseas brands that have set up shop exclusively at Palette. Have a taste of Ah Koong Restaurant, a Johor Bahru noodle joint renowned since 1987. You won’t be able to stop when it comes to the delicious handmade fishcake ($4.90). For beef lovers, you have to try the beef noodles from the famous Hok Kee Authentic Hong Kong Noodle & Congee. The Braised Beef Brisket Noodles ($9) was excellent. The noodles with an al dente chewiness were perfectly paired with beef that was fall-offthe-bone tender and flavourful in every bite. Apart from regional names, local favourites are also aplenty. Take your pick from Balestier Bak Ku Teh, Yong Xin Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee and, my personal favourite, Huat Huat BBQ. We especially enjoyed the Tahu Telor ($9.80) from IndoChili, a simple dish of deep fried tofu blanketed in crispy fried egg. Unlike the big tofu blocks commonly served in other Indonesian restaurants, IndoChili’s rendition was served in tiny fried cubes, allowing it to be even more crispy. By Samantha Francis

We teach you how to look glam and keep fresh, even when partying in this heat Whether you move to the indie grooves at St Jerome’s Laneway Festival or prefer the big headliners at the F1 Singapore Grand Prix off-track concerts, we have just the tips for you to look amazing at outdoor concerts, despite Singapore’s sweltering weather.

Fa shi on Featu r e

rock your concert party look Keep yourself feeling fresh Get yourself a golden tan, but not a sunburn. Keep skin protected with a sunscreen of at least SPF50 and opt for a spray sun-screen that makes for easy re-application. Less is more when it comes to makeup; so keep your skin sheer with a lightweight foundation, and use waterproof mascaras and eyeliners. Pro tip — have oil blotters handy to absorb oil and sweat throughout your day. Lifestyle blogger Carrie Sim also suggests using a primer to keep makeup long-lasting. Her choice pick is one of the beauty market’s latest trends, the BB cushion, a sponge-like applicator saturated with a BB cream that allows touchups with minimal fuss.

Glam it up with flash tattoos

Add fun to your outfits with offshoulder blouses

Show skin at the right places Anxious for a sizzling party look? Freelance stylist Alison Lim recommends wearing off-shoulder and cropped blouses. She also suggests pairing these with flarebottomed pants for an element of fun. For ladies who want to show off their leggy gams, we say, give those denim shorts a miss and opt for this season’s trendy and comfy culottes, which will keep you cool with their wide-legged cuts. For an edgy and bohemian flair, dance the night away in a fringebottomed dress. Fringe is said to be one of the top street styles this year, according to Harpers Bazaar, so you’ll be one with the ‘in’ crowd.

Forget about chunky statement necklaces that will only weigh you down as you move. Take a sartorial tip from Beyonce and Katie Holmes, and try on flash tattoos instead to add a subtle touch of glamour to your outfits. One of the latest fashion trends to hit town, flash tattoos are graphic designs of gold or silver jewellery applied directly on the skin like a temporary tattoo. Check out Kin Tattoo, a homegrown flash tattoo e-tailer which sells designs in gold and silver tones, in designs such as feathers and intricate mandalas.

Ditch heels for sandals This isn’t new advice, but we’ve seen one too many stumble in concert-inappropriate footwear. Unless you’re confident of standing in your sky-high heels from dusk to dawn, we suggest ditching them for flats instead. With gladiator-style laceup sandals, slides and cut-out flats heating up the runway, we think flat is the new fab. If some additional height is what you’re after, pick wedges or platform sandals as they offer more stability.

Zalora loop stud mini messenger ($24.90)

Topshop faux snake print mini crossbody bag ($56.90)

Go mini with your bags Topshop’s mini suede fringe bag from Zalora ($69.90)

Ditch heels for trendy flats

Look, we’re hands free! That’s how we like it when it comes to jostling with the crowds at outdoor concerts. Keep your belongings minimal and bring only what’s essential to your day or night out. And what better way to do so than to get in with the mini-bag trend? Brands like Topshop, Saint Laurent and Givenchy are churning out modern, compact and chic mini bags that come in styles like tote, cross-body and even backpacks. Pick one in a pop of bright colour to complete your outfit and you’re good to go. By Samantha Francis

What

Wonders Water Can Do

If we told you that there was a substance that could boost your energy levels, enhance your complexion, treat indigestion and constipation, help shed stubborn weight around your middle, ease aches, pains and headaches, and possibly even lower your risk of cancer, would you be interested in finding out more? We thought so. Read on, then.

It offers hot, cold and room temperature water on tap. It produces no waste-water that requires troublesome collection and disposal… The list goes on.

AOX water is alkalised by a purification process that uses minerals like calcium and magnesium

NOT JUST ANY WATER That ‘magic’ substance is none other than water – AOX natural antioxidant alkaline water, to be precise. The benefits of drinking alkaline water have been well documented. In general, it counters the risk of having an overly acidic body, known as acidosis – said to be a precursor to many diseases. However, not all alkaline water is created equal, nor in the same way. While conventional water ionisers create artificially alkaline water by splitting water molecules with electricity, AOX water is alkalised by a purification process that uses naturally alkaline minerals such as calcium and magnesium. Therefore, apart from hydrating and cleansing the body, AOX water supplies the body with many of the minerals it needs for healthy functioning. Drinking artificially alkaline water can pose the problem of creating an alkaline gut only, while acidosis persists elsewhere in the body. Drinking naturally alkaline AOX water alkalises the whole body by supplying it with alkaline minerals to counter acidosis in every organ.

COUNT THE REASONS Natural mineral content aside, AOX water has many advantages over water from other types of alkalisers and purifiers. For example, it is dispensed by a compact countertop or pedestal stand unit.

10 Good Reasons To Choose AOX 1. No acidic water wastage 2. No harmful radiation 3. 100% natural and safe 4. Convenience of hot / cold water

on tap

THE FLOW-ON EFFECT A quick visit to the AOX water website and you can see clearly that AOX customers are happy to share their positive experiences with the public. One such customer is Michael Sng. When he started drinking AOX, a troublesome ganglion cryst on his wrist soon disappeared. His lifelong cravings for sugary drinks and junk food dissipated. Michael’s sister-in-law, Nancy, had been suffering from headaches and pain, side-effects of the kidney dialysis she had depended on for more than a decade. She’d become accustomed to taking high doses of painkillers, and was once hospitalised for an accidental overdose. Yet after drinking AOX for just four days, her headaches disappeared and so did the need to take painkillers. She was immensely relieved and very grateful. Michael’s elderly mother was another family member who got to enjoy the benefits of AOX water. For many years she had been suffering from stiffness in her fingers and numbness in her hands. Within a few months of drinking AOX water, she could bend her fingers almost normally, and the numbness had all but subsided.

7. Proven results through AOX Health Screening 8. Top choice of medical professionals 9. Used in 365 Cancer Prevention Society and 15 other NGOs 10. Multiple award-winning brand, including Emerging Brand Award of the Year

AOX water really is a miracle worker. - Michael Sng’s mother

It is said that blood is thicker than water, but, in this case, blood relations were strengthened because of AOX water. It not only made Michael’s family healthier, but brought them closer together.

Show me the money

Forgot your wallet? Just tap and pay with these mobile payment apps Say hello to the digital wallet. With more mobile payment apps, like Dash and Apple Pay, hitting the market, the days of walking around with an actual wallet, bursting with cash and credit cards, may be over. To create your own digital wallet, all you have to do is store your ATM or credit card information — you can add as many cards as you like — into your phone via one of these apps.

To pay, just wave your phone over a compatible transaction receiver. Your payment information will be transmitted to the merchant via a transaction-specific dynamic security code. One thing to note: These apps typically work only on smartphones that are near field communications (NFC)-enabled, like the iPhone 6 or Samsung Galaxy 6. Here are some pros and cons of popular mobile payment apps:

Singtel M Wallet This app is the most useful for those living in Singapore, as it was developed specifically for transactions in local stores. Just add

your credit cards into the app, wave it over a MasterCard PayPass reader, and you are done with your purchase! Pros: • Convenient for people who live in Singapore. • MasterCard PayPass readers are widely available in stores here, so you can use your phone to pay for almost anything. • You can use it to top up your EZ-Link and SingTel Prepard Mobile Hi! Card. • Money can be remitted overseas via the app. Cons: • You have to sign up for a DBS One.Tap MasterCard first before you are able to pay with your phone at stores accepting MasterCard PayPass. • NFC-certified phones plus a Singtel NFC Sim Card will be needed for MasterCard PayPass store transactions to work.

Dash This is an app based in Singapore that allows you to pay with your phone at over 20,000 locations island-wide, with no admin fee. Pros: • Many popular businesses, like 7-Eleven, Watsons, Food Republic, Comfort Delgro and SMRT Taxis, allow payments with this app. • You just need to sign up for a Dash account, top up your account with your bank balance, tap on “Pay Business”, and enter the counter code and account you want to use for payment. • There are always Dash-exclusive promotions. Cons: • Long load times, especially when it comes to third-party links.

LoopPay Not your usual mobile app, this device is quite interesting, as you can use it to pay any merchant, worldwide, that accepts a magnetic strip card. First, store your credit card information in the LoopPay device, which comes in the form of a phone case. To pay, wave the device over a normal credit card reader, while tapping a button at the back of the device. Pros: • Can be used anywhere in the world with a magnetic card reader. • You can also store your gift cards in the device. Cons: • Only compatible with credit cards from the United States. • A LoopPay device (from US$15.95 ($22)) must first be purchased

Left: Dash allows you to pay with your phone at 20,000 locations island-wide Right: Apple Pay can be used only with an Apple Pay-enabled card reader

Apple Pay Launched in 2014, Apple Pay was created by tech giant Apple to allow easy and fast transactions with its devices. Pros: • Can be used in iPhones, Apple Watches and iPads. • There is no need to open the app to pay; just hold your iPhone near the contactless reader with your finger on the Touch ID fingerprint recognition sensor. • Fast way to pay for in-house Apple apps. Cons: • Can be used only at stores with an Apple Pay-enabled reader. Apple Pay does not work with normal credit card readers. • Only available in the US and UK at the moment. • Compatible only with selected Apple devices.

Google Wallet Google’s version of mobile payments to rival Apple Pay. Pros: • Fast payment at many online retailers using “Pay by Google” and Google Play Store Apps. • Works with any credit or debit card. • You can send money to anyone in the US with a Gmail address. • The Google Wallet Card can be used to store payments or withdraw money at ATMs across the US. Cons: • Only available in the US. • Only compatible with Android phones. • Only NFC enabled phones can be used for store payments. Conclusion: Though mobile payment apps are convenient, they have still a long way to go in terms of usability and widespread compatibility. But they can also be a safer option to using traditional credit cards, where your details are exposed for the world to see — just don’t lose your phone. By Chan Shu Hui

The Quinta de Regaleira is one of Portugal’s star attractions

Plunge into a picturesque fairy tale Wish upon a well

Portugal palace Quinta de Regaleira is sure to leave you in awe with its intricate designs and architecture Near the historic centre of Sintra, Portugal, lies one of the country’s grandest palaces, Quinta de Regaleira. Designed by the Italian architect Luigi Manini, the palace evokes a blend of Gothic, Renaissance and Roman styles that reflected the design preferences of Carvalho Monterio, one of the first owners of the estate. Today, the palace holds the status of a UNESCO World Heritage site and is one of Portugal’s most popular tourist destinations.

The octagonal tower of Quinta de Regaleira is the highlight of the palace. Within the structure lies an extensive system of tunnels and caves that connect two spiralling wells in a mysterious underground complex. At 27m deep, the two wells, however, have never served as water sources. Rather, they were used for ceremonies, in particular, Tarot initiation rites. The mystique of the place heightens as its structure is reminiscent of Dante’s Divine Comedy, an epic poem depicting an imaginative vision of the afterlife. One of the wells encompasses nine platforms, an eerie reminder of the nine circles of hell, paradise and purgatory described by the Italian poet.

Masonic principles and ideologies engulf the other smaller, “unfinished well”, with their references drawn on the steps on the staircases and the spacing of the landings. The well bottom contains a Knights Templar cross, once again loading the structure with a cultural richness difficult to grasp.

Enigmatic Architecture Apart from the wells, the palace also boasts the five-floor hilltop mansion, many stained glass windows and lavish stuccoes that promise a picturesque sight. Keep a keen eye out for the gargoyles that stand guard on the rooftop, frozen in stone. At various points of the year, especially during the summer months, you may have a chance to catch some of the cultural activities in store at Quinta de Regaleira, such as theatre, open air cinema screenings and

Whisk yourself away into an Eden of fairy tales when you enter the delicate garden. This place reminds me of Havisham’s gardens in Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations. The palace allows you to steal quiet moments with your loved one amid the heavy symbolism of its surroundings, much like how the novel’s protagonists, Pip and Estella, often did. Similarly, you can begin your journey to the Quinta de Regaleira palace with great expectations — you won’t be disappointed. The entrance fee into Quinta de Regaleira is priced at €6 ($9) and €3 ($4.50) for adults and children respectively. The palace is a 30-minute walk away from the town centre in Sintra, Portugal. A deliciously fun gourmet cruise On-board feasts are a regular feature on Konsortium-organised cruises

AN ALL-ROUNDED GOURMET FEAST

Add fun to your cruise trips with a Konsortium itinerary

The voyage, organised by Konsortium, capped off with a flashy National Day celebration for Singapore National Day may be long over, but the memories of an SG50 cruise I took over the long weekend are still fresh in my mind. Before sailing on this three-day cruise to nowhere organised by travel specialist Konsortium, I wondered what kind of new discoveries, on-board activities and indulgences I could enjoy on a high seas cruise without any ports of call. All those worries were cast out to sea the minute I stepped on board the SuperStar Gemini, a one-stop destination on its own.

HIGH ENERGY ON THE HIGH SEAS Konsortium’s itinerary added another dimension of fun and deliciousness to the usual casinos and spas offered on cruise ships. One of the highlights included an engaging cooking demonstration by Chef Heman Tan, who — besides being executive chef at JP Pepperdine, a seasonal Ironman triathlete and a ceramic artist — won us over with his unique sense of humour. He does not shy away from talking to his food, for starters. “Look at this fish. Nice fish,” he said, while preparing a grilled coral cod entrée. He went on to say, “You’ll want to grill it skin-down, so the skin gets most of the oil and comes out crispy.”

His demonstrations weren’t all just for show. We also got to savour Chef Tan’s dishes during the Gala Dinner that night. It was a full-fledged five-course affair, complete with personal visits to our table from the maestro himself. Highlights that left us craving more included the slow-cooked duck confit and grilled coral cod drizzled with the chef’s unique concoction: salted egg hollandaise sauce. Dessert was a surprising treat as we got to try Chef Tan’s monochrome mooncakes, which he said took six months to perfect. Both black and white mooncakes were a hit. The Pure White Cranberry Lotus mooncake surprised with its tangy and refreshing flavours, while the black Bamboo Charcoal mooncake had a decadent salted egg filling. Both mooncakes will be sold in limited quantities at JP Pepperdine’s flagship restaurant chain, Jack’s Place. But, as with all good things, the feast came at a price — and I’m not talking about the package’s affordable fares. Chef Tan, who participates in triathlons, had made us work for his food with a morning workout session the day before. It can be hard to motivate yourself to hit the gym, especially when you’re on a cruise and all set to relax. “Many people today have a nua (Hokkien for lazy) lifestyle — not very balanced,” Chef Tan told me after our light aerobics workout that was held on the top deck for fresh morning air.

“So I wanted to share not only my cooking, but also my morning exercise. Overall, I want to encourage people to eat and live well,” he said.

CRUISING DONE RIGHT Before cruising back to Singapore, we also had a special SG50 party on board. Put together by SuperStar Gemini’s own crew, the performance celebrated Singapore’s exuberance and diversity. It ended the trip on a high note, sending us home fully-charged and ready to celebrate National Day.

Prefer a longer getaway? Sail on the upcoming Southern Hemisphere Cruise, departing Nov 15 on the SuperStar Virgo. Ports of call include Cambodia, Hong Kong and Australia. Konsortium is offering $100 off and free $100 on-board dining for this cruise. By Pamela Chow Brought to you by Konsortium Express & Tours and Star Cruises. Shanghai is one of China’s metropolises

tr av e l t ips

These three alternative metropolises offer a concentrated dose of modern Chinese culture

Xi’an is home to the Terracotta warriors

Brought to you by:

There are certain places in China that wind up on the top of most travel itineraries, like the Great Wall of China or the Yangtze River. Often these main attractions rightly deserve their spot. But with a land mass roughly the equivalent of the United States, China also offers a spectrum of experiences that go beyond these typical travel destinations. While China’s most recognised megacities include Shanghai and Beijing, there are also other alternative metropolises to check out that also provide a concentrated dose of modern Chinese culture.

Xi'an Being home to the Terracotta Warriors, Xi’an is a top destination for many travelers. While the warriors are certainly a sight to behold, don’t miss out on the opportunity to explore a city characterised by a serious blend of old and new. Take the time to walk or bike along the city wall while contemplating the stark contrast between the Xi’an’s past and present. Or get lost in the Muslim Quarter while sampling wonderful distinct regional cuisine and witnessing the bizarre and beautiful water show at the Fountain of Wild Goose Pagoda in North Xi’an Square.

Chongqing’s skyscrapers seem to defy the land’s physical constraints

Chongqing One of the largest and fastest growing cities in China, Chongqing is often overlooked as a travel destination, though it offers a unique and invigorating experience for foreign explorers. Situated in between mountains and giant rivers, the city offers an aesthetic that is different from most big Chinese cities. Rather than extending along flat land, the city is developing from within with impressive skyscrapers that seem to defy the physical constraints of its geographic location. Though Chongqing is fast advancing to the end of the urbanization spectrum, almost two-thirds of its population still live in rural environments. There may be no place than Chongqing that better represents the transition from rural to urban living, a trend that is sweeping China.

Nanjing Located just over 300km from Shanghai and accessible by high-speed trains, Nanjing is a convenient destination for people living in, or traveling through, Shanghai. Slightly more relaxed than your regular megacity, Nanjing exhibits a slower pace of life than its more hectic counterparts, Shanghai and Beijing. An emphasis is put on the importance of green space, with parks found throughout the city, mountains to climb (the Purple Mountain, Zijin Shan) and lakes with isles to explore. As with most Chinese cities, Nanjing has no shortage of ancient relics and soaring skyscrapers.

An emphasis is placed on nature in Nanjing

How can you make sure you’re getting a true five-star experience? Weekender finds out from industry experts

T rav e l featu r e

Real estate agent Janice Yeo received a rude shock when she checked into a “four-star” hotel during a Taiwan trip last year. “The hotel had advertised itself as a luxury one, but I had to put up with faulty air-conditioning and a rickety bed. I felt cheated,” said the 47-year-old, who has since resolved to read hotel reviews before booking any accommodation. Many travellers may not know this, but the star rating system — the most widelyused standard for hotels worldwide — has no real regulatory body. So what actually qualifies as a luxury hotel? And if you’d like a five-, or even six-star, stay, how can you make sure you choose one truly deserving of the title? Here are some factors you should look out for.

What to look out for before booking

a luxury hotel stay

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION Most luxury hotels that boast five-star ratings typically have “attractive locations”, explained online travel agency Kayak.sg’s vice-president Debby Soo. These locations can include commercial districts and secluded beach resorts. But beware — good location maketh not a good hotel. Popular tourist districts, like Singapore’s own Orchard Road and Chinatown, are dotted with self-proclaimed “five-star hotels” that are, in fact, sub-par.

the luxury of space Room sizes in better hotels are also typically much more expansive than regular ones — and that means a lot especially in crowded cities where space is a luxury. The Ritz-Carlton Millenia, for example, which overlooks the Marina Bay skyline, has rooms of at least 51 sq m. Its suites can run up to a whopping 150 sq m, with two bedrooms and two (and a half) marble bathrooms. In comparison, standard rooms in midrange hotels like the three-star Hotel Kai in Bugis are only 6 sq m. Its largest offering measures 38 sq m, and comes equipped with basic fittings like a dining table, washing machine and microwave. Five-star room upgrades at Sheraton Hotel come with added luxuries like access to the member lounge, butler services and cocktail reception

GETTING THE ROYAL TREATMENT Here’s one quality that many travellers look forward to with every luxury stay: being treated like royalty. After all, when you’re forking out big money, you’d want to be pampered. Some hotels gladly go above and beyond to make you feel extra special. For example, the Westin Singapore loans guests branded workout gear and conducts yoga classes. Its concierge even leads guests on morning and evening runs around Marina Bay. Mandarin Oriental Geneva offers patrons private limousine transfers and even a fullyinsured and fully-pumped Porsche at their disposal for one whole day. Granted, you may have to pay extra for these special perks through hotel packages.

A TREASURE TROVE Soft and fluffy towels, branded bath amenities and even quality-label mattresses can be the cherry on top of a good trip. You get what you pay for, after all. Conrad Hotels, for example, offers guests a choice of four brands of bath amenities, including the ultra-luxe Shanghai Tang and eco-friendly Tara Smith Vegan Hair Care. Simply request for your preferred brand through the Conrad Concierge app. You can also request for turn down and car services through the mobile platform as well. And what’s more important in a hotel stay than a good night’s sleep? Last year, Gallup’s Hospitality Industry survey showed that guests would even pay more for a better bed. This means sleeping on, say, the speciallycommissioned Sheraton Sweet Sleeper beds or the Westin Heavenly Bed, said to have eased many into deep, restful sleep.

THE PRICE IS RIGHT Even if you’re scoping out the most basic room options in a five-star hotel, be prepared to pay at least $300* a night. Suites can go up to $570, with some Presidential Suites — often the most exclusive and lavish of rooms — going for a cool $5,500. But if you’re looking for some affordable options that don’t compromise on opulence, there are plenty of luxury hotels around Asia that won’t require financial gymnastics (see side story). Who says that only the rich can be pampered? *Prices as stated on various hotel websites

Enjoy the best of Italy while exploring places close to home on Costa Cruises’ “Italy at Sea” trips Imagine indulging in delicious Italian cuisine, a Venetian carnival and opulent performances without having to travel all the way to Europe. That’s the true Italian experience you can enjoy on Costa Cruises with its unique “Italy at Sea” concept.

A FLOATING ITALY The Costa Victoria is often heralded as a floating Italy, and it’s easy to see why. Once on board, you will be greeted by the trademark friendliness and flamboyance of Italian hospitality, all the way from deck to suite. Out at sea, you’ll be kept entertained with the numerous activities on board. Watch the new “Sapori d’Italia” Italian musical performance, boogie away at the fancy “Carnival of Venice” theme party, or savour mouthwatering traditional Italian meals at the pizzeria. Apart from pizza, another must-try is the signature lobster dish served during the fourcourse fine dining programme at Costa’s restaurants. You can even try your hand at cooking through on-board demos with the restaurants’ chefs. There are also plenty of activities for kids, like mask-painting and costume-making workshops. Kids can even wear their creations to the “Carnival of Venice” theme party!

HOME AWAY FROM HOME As you immerse yourself in this authentic Italian experience, rest assured that you’ll still feel completely at home.

Besides having a wide culinary range that satisfies the Asian palette — nothing beats a good bowl of rice or noodles — the Costa Victoria will also call at popular destinations in Southeast Asia. Those starting their journeys in Singapore between Nov 7, 2015 and Jan 2016 can look forward to stopping at ports-of-call like Phuket, Malacca, Penang and Langkawi. The cruise journeys vary from three to five nights. Look out for upcoming promotions and highlights on the Costa Victoria’s “Italy at Sea” cruises (see box story below), so you don’t miss out on your next big Italian voyage!
