Club sticks to charter and shares its wealth
By DEAN LAWSON
A
n evolving WimmeraMallee success story has traded its way into a position that will allow it to continue to distribute money across the region well into the future.
Horsham Sports and Community Club, from a humble conceptual beginning in 1990, has evolved into one of the region’s most successful community enterprises. The club, fresh from distributing its latest round of sponsorships to a variety of volunteer sporting and community organisations, has a growing membership of more than 4000, a far cry from its early days. In its 23-year history the club has also taken its financial return to the community to beyond $3.33-million and now provides jobs for a staff of 28. Manager Glenn Carroll, who has watched the unique enterprise grow and develop for almost 15 years, agreed that that the club was in a sound position to move forward.
“The club’s board has completed a strategic plan designed to take it through to 2016. The vision statement is clear. In 2016 we want the club to be recognised as the best community-based organisation in regional Australia,” he said.
“The club’s role remains unchanged – to provide direct and indirect benefits to Horsham and surrounding Wimmera communities. That means using and managing its resources and business activities to their greatest potential.”
Challenges Mr Carroll said the club might confront issues in the future and was well placed to meet challenges. “At the moment we’re achieving our goals through the successful management and operation of a gaming and hospitality venue governed by an independent board and management team. “How this is achieved in the future will be determined by the board of the day according to opportunities that exist. “Beyond 2022, when the
gaming machine entitlement agreements expire, there are no guarantees that the club will operate as it does today.”
Gaming revenue But Mr Carroll added that the fundamental principles that led to the club’s creation remained ‘stronger than ever’, reflected in a board decision to buy extra entitlements during a 2010 State Government Gaming Machine Auction. “That decision has resulted in all gaming revenue in the Horsham Local Government Area being directed back to community-based organisations,” he said. “In no other jurisdiction in the state is all revenue from gaming machines directed to community-based organisations. It’s unique. “In their 1990 brief to get members to a meeting the ethos was ‘that if the pokies were going to come to Horsham then it would be in the community’s best interest to control the profits, rather than the faceless institution or businessman that might not even by local which would result in profits leaving the commu-

nity’. Nothing has changed.”
Mr Carroll acknowledged the different levels of club sponsorship, which ranged from thousands to a few hundred dollars, reflecting the scope of each request. “In many cases projects have been not so much about how much we can give clubs and organisations, but what they can do with what we can give them,” he said. Since the club started distributing revenue to community, sponsorships totalling $1,335,377 have gone to organisations in Beulah, Brim, Dimboola, Donald, Edenhope, Goroke, Harrow, Hopetoun, Horsham, Jeparit, Kaniva, Laharum, Minyip, Murtoa, Natimuk, Nhill, Pimpinio, Rainbow, Rupanyup, Warracknabeal, other district settlements and now Serviceton. Last year Horsham Sports and Community Club’s Baillie Street entertainment and function centre underwent major renovations, which involved an extended gaming room and staff facilities, the introduction of a café and soft lounge area and new office space.
Chef master class tickets to sell like hot cakes Organisers behind a Horsham visit by television personality chef Amina Elshafei have urged people keen to attend master classes to quickly buy their tickets.
Amina, a contestant on last year’s Master Chef series, is leading the sessions at Axis Works from July 24 to 27 for Wimmera Health Care Group Foundation. Sessions will be at 3.30pm and 7.30pm daily and involve Amina preparing and cooking dishes. Foundation committee member Diana
McDonald said the daily menus would be a surprise and participants would have a chance to sample the food. “Tickets are $25 per session or three sessions for $70 – each day there will be a different menu to experience so why not come for all three days?” she said. Amina, also a paediatric registered nurse, was born in Saudi Arabia and has lived in Australia since she was four. “I cannot wait to be in Horsham to be part of the wonderful upcoming event,” she said.

Courts to serve sporting revival
C
By DEAN LAWSON
ompletion of a $4.128-million project to rebuild 28 flood-affected Horsham district tennis courts will provide the catalyst for a major promotion of the sport in the region.
The project has led to six clubs securing the best artificial playing surfaces in the game’s history in Horsham district. It has prompted a major push from regional clubs in partnership with Tennis Victoria to resurrect or develop the standing of Wimmera tennis. Moves to establish an annual season-launching Wimmera tennis carnival later this year and creation of a professional coaching position to oversee regional player development are already underway. The Horsham 6 Project involves four courts at Central Park and three at Sunnyside in Horsham, eight at Haven on Horsham’s outskirts, six at Quantong, four at Brimpaen and three at Telangatuk. Their reconstruction, involving plexi-cushion surfacing, the same as used in the Australian Open, follows similar projects at Coughlin Park in Horsham and Natimuk and extensive court redevelopment in neighbouring shires. Federal Government money for the project came from Natural Disaster Funding arrangements after independent State Government analysis confirmed that the courts were suffering from long-term affects of flooding. Horsham Rural City Council adopted the project under the proviso it could complete the job within 12 months. Work started on January 14 this year and finished on June 18.

Horsham mayor Cr David Grimble said at an official opening at Horsham Sunnyside Bowling Club that the project had been an ‘excellent’ example of how the council, State Government, government agencies, and private and ‘local’ contractors could work for communities.

“The new courts are stunning and do stand out,” he said.

“I’m excited for the many generations of children and families who will enjoy these wonderful facilities in the years to come.” Tennis Victoria country tennis manager Adam Crameri joined councillors, contractors and club representatives at the opening. Clubs are now working towards an inaugural Wimmera Week of Tennis, scheduled from October 5 to 11 to launch the summer tennis season. The carnival will involve a major club promotion at Haven Market and open days before week-long promotional activities culminating in twilight tennis competitions.
Professional Regional tennis representatives also gathered at a Tennis Victoria breakfast in Horsham to discuss the conceptual process needed to attract a ‘professional’ tennis coach to the Wimmera. Tennis Victoria western Victorian community officer Sue Dundas said the regional tennis community had, for many years, raised the issue of developing a coaching scheme involving a Horsham-based professional. “Clubs are hoping to leverage the fact that they now have new facilities that make Horsham an attractive proposition for someone to build a tennis-coaching business there,” she said.

One scheme. One focus on individuals. One commitment to lifelong support. From 1 July, Australia’s current support system for people living with disability is being progressively replaced with DisabilityCare Australia. This new scheme will help provide a better quality of life for Australians with a significant and permanent disability, and for their families and carers too.
What’s new about DisabilityCare Australia? DisabilityCare Australia is a new way of funding personalised support for people with disability. As well as looking at a person’s immediate needs, it will take a lifelong approach and enable people with disability to have choice and control over their supports. It will focus on early intervention, recognising that timely support can minimise the impact of a disability on individuals, families and carers. Assistance will be provided at the right time, rather than only once people reach crisis.
Who is eligible? DisabilityCare Australia will help people who have a significant and permanent disability and who need assistance with everyday activities. This includes people whose disabilities are attributed to intellectual, cognitive, neurological, sensory, or physical impairment, or a psychiatric condition.
Will I lose my current support?

Jamie and Kim’s Mobile Zoo from Ararat is set to be a hit with children with reptiles to hold, a wombat to pet and a dingo to see up close. Three on-the-couch expo sessions, designed for relatively small groups, will provide a relaxed and informal setting where people can access more detail on discussion topics. On the couch this year will be Centre for Australian Weather and Climate Research meteorologist Peter McIntosh who will discuss how to read and interpret weather models. Other on-the-couch discussions will also cover rural crime with Tania Peters from Victoria Police and farm book keeping with Noel Hazeldine from the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. A political forum involving six Mallee electorate candidates, who will present their policies and hear about a variety of issues, also promises to be a highlight.

Looking for political sincerity, substance
EDITORIAL
A
By DEAN LAWSON
mid the political debacle in Canberra it is important to remember that most people who enter politics, regardless of allegiance, do so with the greatest intention.
Party politics and personalities invariably get in the way and it tends to be people armed with a rare combination of diplomacy, flexibility, and geniality, as well as strength and clear direction, who leap these hurdles and go on to ‘make a difference.’ As a democratic society we also demand and deserve representatives at the coalface in the political process who can provide the critical and sometimes elusive elements that generate confidence. While many tuned into the drama involving the Australian Labor Party last week, some of us paused to consider how political candidates from our own patch might perform if they won a piece of this complicated governance pie. From what we have seen so far, some of the candidates have something to offer and are therefore making ‘legitimate’ attempts to win a seat in Federal Parliament.
Do they consider what the candidate’s party represents and how the party or candidate will sit strategically in parliament? Or is it all simply about the individual, the person, the representative? This will always be subject to debate, speculation and yes, even contempt. What is refreshing this year is that some candidates, from both sides of the political spectrum, are establishing clearly defined and broad-ranging platforms. What is also emerging is that some individuals have a much clearer understanding than others about the complexities of an electorate extending from Mildura to Stawell.
Huge job In Mallee, the Rudd-Gillard saga won’t have done the ALP’s Lydia Senior any favours and she already has a huge job of upsetting a conservative juggernaut. Yet, with obvious leadership background she was quickly on the front foot, smoothly presenting an honest personal assessment of the circumstances as they unfolded. Senior smartly swooped on an age-old belief that to get things done an electorate must be marginal. This concept, so long the conclusion in many a debate over government services and support, will have broad appeal regardless of what happens in Canberra. The Nationals’ Andrew Broad, stepping into the shoes of retiring John Forrest,
Rockhampton Indi folk-music duo Hanna and Dan Acfield will perform in Ararat Hotel’s Red Room for Ararat Live on Friday night. Hannah Acfield has previously performed in the region at Lake Bolac Eel Festival.

He uses his deep knowledge of the farming, food and export industry and business process to promote the productive strength of the region and the benefits that flow from them.
IDEAL PATIO BLINDS
The Liberals’ late-arriving wildcard in the electoral equation Chris Crewther was quick to champion the concept of ‘choice’. As a young academic with family footprints in Sunraysia, Mallee and the Wimmera he represents the end of a patient 20-year wait for traditional Liberal voters. Like many others in the southern half of the electorate and based on what has so far found its way to our newsroom ‘in’ tray, we remain unsure about the depth of the other candidates’ knowledge of Mallee.

Horsham rail freight negotiations fall flat C
ommercial negotiations between freight companies Wimmera Container Line and Qube Logistics have ended in a stalemate.
The failure of both companies to come to an agreement has left Horsham municipal leaders frustrated and disappointed. It has also continued to generate uncertainty about the future use of Horsham’s Mill Street Rail Freight Terminal. Wimmera Container Line operates Horsham Intermodal Freight Terminal at Dooen, designed to replace the outdated and inappropriate Mill Street centre. Qube Logistics, during almost 12 months of negotiating with Wimmera Container Line to shift its operations to Dooen, has leased the Mill Street site from Australian Rail Track Corporation. Horsham Rural City Council is desperate to remove railfreight operations from the heart of the city and consoli-
date Dooen operations. It has corporation and ministerial assurances that Qube will have to leave Mill Street site when a lease expires at the end of October.
general manager Allister Boyce said the company was exploring deals with other potential clients for rail-container services. “We hope to make some announcements on these shortly. We have a close working relationship with the council on our operations at the Wimmera Intermodal Freight Terminal,” he said.
Council planning and economic director Tony Bawden said the council had maintained close contact with both parties throughout the process. “In liaison with the Department of Transport, the council also offered the brokering of an independent facilitator to assist in the negotiations. However, ultimately it was a commercial matter that needed to be dealt with between WCL and Qube,” he said.
Council unhappy Horsham mayor David Grimble said the outcome was ‘clearly not what the council wanted.’
“Now we have some surity ... we will just go about having the site decommissioned” Cr David Grimble continues to pursue future business to achieve this.
“Maximising and throughput use at the new WIFT facility and increasing volumes of freight on to rail is a prime objective of the National Transport Initiative,” he said.
”We don’t want two railfreight terminals operating. During the planning and construction process of the Dooen site we tested the market at length to find a terminal operator. Wimmera Container Line was the only company that put its hand up.”

I am now very disillusioned because I believe that a volunteer goal umpire, Robert Morris, a valued life member of Stawell Football Netball Club, has been treated poorly.
Make sure you try our mobile catering service!
He reluctantly put his hand up to umpire because Wimmera Football League does not have enough umpires to cover all games – a situation which will only get worse if this is how volunteers are treated. In the course of doing his unpaid job, he found himself being approached by a club coach and was then subject to a variety of indiscretions that would breach the code of conduct in any sport. The process he had to endure has been very difficult and he has unfairly and unjustly been made to feel, again and again, like the villain in this ordeal, having to always defend himself. How ridiculous. To add insult to injury, which involved a split lip and bruised kidneys, he has been left with the same sentence as the coach who was ultimately found guilty of a striking charge.
It wants reassurances the site will be decommissioned in writing. Cr Grimble said the council supported the Mill Street residents. “Now we have some surity what the companies aren’t going to do we will just go about having the site decommissioned,” he said. “If there is going to be an industrial opportunity at the site it will have to be in harmony with council’s long-term vision for the precinct.”
email yoursay@theweeklyadvertiser.com.au
There are many of us who have been left with the feeling that justice has been far from done. I hope no other club ever has to endure what Stawell volunteers have been through, especially Robert, and I hope they never have to experience this again. In all my 37 years of involvement in sport I have never seen such an injustice. For anyone who still has doubts about what transpired that day, please try to obtain copies of the statements made by all parties and you will be able to make up your own mind. I think only then that people might understand why we at Stawell Football Netball Club are so disappointed and gutted at the result of this process. Tracey Dark, Stawell
Lack of umpires SIR,- I wish to comment about Wimmera Football league’s problems concerning the lack of independent umpires to officiate at Wimmera League games. I would like to remind league chief commissioner John Smith that three and a half years ago he did have just that! Every Wimmera League senior game was officiated by independent field and goal umpires supplied by Wimmera Football Umpires Association.
In his wisdom, Mr Smith effectively led the removal of the WFUA and the commission then establishing its own ‘Umpiring Group’ at the end of 2010. Of this decision, Mr Smith’s comments from the Chief Commissioner Report for the 2010 WFL Annual Report makes for interesting reading. It states in part: ‘…the commission believes such a move will offer many benefits for football and umpiring etiquette required to satisfy the discontent with which we are continually confronted, particularly relating to perceptions surrounding ability and skill.” – Page 8, WFL Annual Report 2010. The above heavily contradicts the following statement from the same report: “I commend the standard of umpiring and also personally record the praise of the high standard of umpiring witnessed throughout the finals series in particular as expressed personally to me by many patrons.” Page 15, WFL Annual Report 2010. Taking into consideration the above, Mr Smith and his commission need to take a great deal of responsibility for the well-publicised situation that occurred earlier this year. Government funding for workforce project
T
he State Government will pump $50,000 into a Wimmera project to develop ways to equip students and workers with skills and experience.
Minister and Member for Lowan Hugh Delahunty said the workforce-development funding meant Wimmera communities could now look forward to a more prosperous future. He said the funding would to go towards proposals outlined in a 2012 Workforce Development in the Grampians report, aimed at helping regional businesses and education providers build workforce skills and knowledge.
commissioned the University of Ballarat to undertake a detailed study of workforce trends in the area, to determine the expertise needed to sustain regional businesses and industries, now and into the future.” Mr Delahunty said Wimmera Development Association would oversee the project, which would involve schools and regional business.
He said 15 secondary schools and selected primary schools would have an opportunity to participate in projects to raise career pathway and opportunity awareness.
“Ensuring regional competitiveness, prosperity and growth are all top priorities for the Victorian Government across regional and rural Victoria,” Mr Delahunty said.
“Meanwhile, in regional businesses and industries, ambassador programs, work experience, and apprenticeships will be made available to address skills shortages and allow employers to showcase their businesses to prospective recruits,” he said.
“That’s why, in 2011, the government

mendations from the report are implemented, providing the practical tools and guidance needed to equip students – and those already in the workforce – with the skills and experience needed to progress in their chosen field.”
Master vehicle body-builder Vince Panozzo formerly of Horsham has left a gathering of 40 Wimmera Historical Vehicle Society members ‘amazed’ at his craftsmanship. Mr Panozzo, who completing a panel-beating apprenticeship at the Ranley Panels workshop before studying overseas, gave a four-hour presentation on his skills and projects, which involve building car bodies from scratch. His clients source rare and desirable vehicle chassis including wheels, frame, suspension and engine and Mr Panozzo creates a body for the vehicle. At the Wimmera gathering he talked about some of his latest projects, including an Alfa Romeo and Delage from the 1930s. The Delage featured on the cover of the program for a RACV Motorclassica concours in Melbourne. Club spokesman Neil Smith said Mr Panozzo’s work was an example of ‘staggering’ craftsmanship.
FRUIT TREES AVAILABLE NOW
“By thinking strategically and implementing these programs now, we can ensure that the future workforce has the skills and experience needed to drive economic development – creating more jobs and career opportunities and boosting the regional economy,” he said. The government is providing funding through the Regional Development Australia program.

“The creation of a beautiful 1930s vehicle body in aluminium takes about six months. It involves simply taking aluminium and building it into a shape. It involves incredible skill,” he said.
Matt Napier, who bounced a football through the Wimmera as part of a 4500-kilometre trek from Perth to Sydney to raise awareness of global poverty, completed his project on Friday. He used six footballs and five pairs of shoes during his journey.
Mr Delahunty said the project would empower communities to take action on their own behalf and ensure the Wimmera was economically sustainable.

“Vince amazed his audience with pictures of past projects and provided tuition in basic panel forming techniques.
“He also explained the use of oxy-acetylene equipment in body fabrication and demonstrated the art of lead loading steel and aluminium. He demonstrated oxy welding of aluminium with Andy Pope proving a very capable student.”

any of the medications and drugs that we commonly use in veterinary medicine are the same, or similar, to those used in human health care.
Many antibiotics, painkillers, heart medications and others are the same as those prescribed by doctors treating human patients. It’s not uncommon for pet owners, when I prescribe medication for their dogs and cats, to be quite surprised to find that they, too, take the same tablets. However, despite the many similarities, it is vitally important for pet owners to understand that dogs, cats and other animals have different physiology from humans, and even quite marked differences between species. Hence we cannot assume that just because one human-type medication has been prescribed for a pet, any will be safe. Neither should we forget that what is safe for a dog may not be for a cat, or for another type of pet.
Conference and Boardroom Tables in a wide range of shapes and finishes.
Other medications are simply not safe to be used for treating pets at all, despite being common human treatments. Over-the-counter painkillers and anti-inflammatories are a good example. As people, we are used to being able to reach for some paracetamol, aspirin or ibuprofen when we have a headache, are sore, or running a fever. It is tempting to do the same for our pets when they’re not well, particularly if it is after hours and the vet is closed. However, these types of medications can have serious side effects for both dogs and cats,
• Shelton & Lane can help you create a quality office environment • Traditional materials & modern design • Reliable after sales support
Another common form of medication, which is a significant concern for cats, is pyrethrinbased spot-on flea treatments. These are sold in supermarkets as flea treatments for dogs, and in this species are quite safe if used as directed. In cats, however, these products can be extremely dangerous and cause severe neurological problems leading to seizures, even death.
Supplements Other medications might not harm our pets particularly, but may not provide much benefit either. A good example is the supplement glucosamine. This is used in pets and humans alike to promote joint health. However, human glucosamine supplements, available from pharmacies, are formulated in a way that is difficult for dogs to digest. Most of the glucosamine will pass through the gut without being absorbed. Using a supplement that is designed for dogs, on the other hand, will make sure that maximum benefit is gained. On the whole, it is best to consult a vet before giving your pets any medication or supplements It is also important to administer them as directed - for example with food or on an empty stomach – and to finish the full course as prescribed. In this way, medications can remain a safe and effective way to ensure the health of our pets. • Dr Vogt is senior veterinarian at Animal Aid in Melbourne. ob satisfaction for Lauren Baulderstone is rewarding because she gets to make a difference in peoples’ lives. Lauren is the new dietician at Rural Northwest Health. She started work with a Community Health team after moving to Warracknabeal from Port Pirie, SA, where she worked for the town’s regional health service. It was while there, that Lauren helped a patient through an intense program that resulted in him losing around 50k kilograms. Lauren said the experience was life changing for both of them. “He was such a happier person and his whole life had turned around which was just so great to see,” Lauren said. “He was a really determined person and we worked as a team towards his goal and it was just so satisfying to see his change.” Lauren, who was raised in the Adelaide Hills, said she had already enjoyed her move to Warracknabeal for two reasons. “I was excited when I got the position. It’s a nice place to come and work and the region has pretty landscapes,” she said. “And my previous role in SA was mainly working with acute and aged care residents whereas here I get to work with an entire community of all ages, sizes and conditions.” Lauren said as a young girl, she always loved food and cooking and had a strong interest in health. “I enjoyed biology and learning about the body so in year 12, I studied nutrition and did really well.

“I loved the course and that’s where my passion really started so becoming a dietician was a natural transition. I did a Bachelor’s degree with honours at Flinders University and haven’t looked back.” Lauren said she was looking forward to meeting new people in the southern Mallee community. “I work a lot with referrals but I am also keen to help people who are interested in improving their diet or the quality of their diet.” Lauren enjoys cooking in her spare time as well as playing netball and tennis. People can make an appointment with Lauren in Warracknabeal, Hopetoun or Beulah by calling 5396 1238.

Shire banks on chief executive H
indmarsh Shire Council’s new chief executive Tony Doyle will bring an extensive international banking background to the role.
Cr Gersch said he had ‘great’ confidence in the contribution Mr Doyle would make to the Hindmarsh community.
Mr Doyle has a Bachelor of Economics and Master of Business Administration and an extensive banking background forged in Australia, the United Kingdom and Asia. He steps into the position having worked in business and retail banking, credit and operational risk, marketing and international trade. He joined the council in December last year as corporate services director, focusing on improving business performance, particularly in financial management, community engagement and customer service. Councillors appointed him with a unanimous decision at a special meeting last week. Mayor Cr Rob Gersch said Mr Doyle secured the appointment after a ‘hotly contested

and thorough’ recruitment process. “We received more than 30 high-quality applications from very experienced and capable people from right across Australia,” Cr Gersch said. “Tony Doyle was the standout candidate.” The council’s recruitment consultant Philip Shanahan organised initial interviews with 18 selected applicants. Hindmarsh councillors then shortlisted and interviewed the top five.
“Tony is a wonderful people person, a great communicator and relationship builder. His business-management skills are particularly strong and we feel very fortunate to have secured the services of such a contemporary and skilled CEO for the next five years,” he said.

W
ith the constant public focus on interest rates, particularly the first week of every month when the Board of the Reserve Bank of Australia meets to determine its movement, many people don’t fully understand the power of the term ‘cash rate’. Here is an explanation.
In most developed countries, the official interest rate sets a benchmark from which mortgage, credit card and other loan rates are based.
However, since the global financial crisis the cash rate has been used to stimulate consumer spending and business investment. The current rate is at an historic low of 2.75 percent.
The problem with growing too fast is that demand outstrips supply and prices start to rise. Signs of this include a shortage of skilled workers, higher prices for raw materials and infrastructure bottlenecks.
How well the strategy works depends on the response of individuals, businesses, the major banks and governments.
These problems cannot be solved overnight so the ‘solution’ is to slow the economy to reduce demand. However, raising rates too quickly could trigger a recession – and moving too slowly could allow inflation to get out of control.
The economy, after all, is the result of the decisions we all make. The lingering memories of the GFC and the ongoing economic problems in Europe and the USA are causing Australian households and businesses to restrain consumption or investment despite the low interest rates.
A business may decide to defer expansion plans not just because credit is more expensive, rather they see lower demand for their products.
If interest rates are ‘low’, individuals, businesses and governments will borrow to invest or increase consumption.
Another strategy could be to proceed with expansion plans and try to steal a march on their competitors.
We buy more whitegoods, cars and property while companies expand production and governments build more infrastructure. If rates increase, we put off buying and investing and the economy slows down.
In theory there should be a ‘neutral’
It really comes down to how we personally respond to the words and actions of the Reserve Bank of Australia. • Robert Goudie is an authorised representative of Meritum Financial Group Pty Ltd AFSL 245569.

Raising or lowering rates is always likely to be controversial because the decision will be based on imperfect data.

Weddings ILIJA LESKARAC & HELEN UL JANIC-FLETCHER ILIJA LESKARAC & HELEN UL JANIC-FLETCHER DECEMBER 29, 2012 CEREMONY:ST. MARYS BASILICA , GEELONG RECEPTION:THE SHERATON EASTERN BEACH, GEELONG Ilija and Helen were married in the church which held special meaning for Helen and her dad as he was to unwell to attend. Her two sons , Luka and Hudson walked her down the aisle to That’s Amore by Dean Martin ,a song her Dad loved to sing. The special meanings continued as their reception not only looked over the magnificent view of eastern beach, but also the seat they shared on their first date looking out over the waves and lights of Geelong. We just wanted our friends and family to have fun and our fantastic fifties band Hip Cats who played individually to each table during meals and the laughs from our photo booth assured this. Helen, the only daughter of Aileen and Srecko (John) Uljanic originally from Ballarat was attended by her two new step-daughters Abbey and Sammi Leskarac and her two lifelong best friends Robyn Young and Michelle Steenhuis. Her cosmobella dress was picked from a magazine picture as it was for a 2013 collection …and she did not see it till 12 days before her big day when it arrived from Italy where it was made…it was even more beautiful than I imagined…covered in crystals with a black belt and diamante brooch the white over black tuelle gave it a stunning blue grey hue. Ilija, the only son of Jela and Ivan Leskarac of Bannockburn was attended by childhood mate Daryl Hobbs and larrikin friend Michael Russell and his two greatest fans ,new sons Luka Fletcher and Hudson Fletcher-Leskarac. Interleague coach has say on appeal finding W
immera Football League country championships coach Louie Dalziel has urged the regional football fraternity to ‘take a deep breath’ and remember why they support the game.
In a letter to The Weekly Advertiser about the fall-out from an incident involving a Nhill coach and Stawell volunteer umpire, Dalziel said it was important to adopt a commonsense approach and have a clear understanding of what was right and wrong. He said in his letter: “This debacle should never have happened and we as a proud football region should never tolerate this behaviour.” Dalziel made his comments in response to an AFL Victoria Country appeals board finding that reduced a Western Vic Football tribunal seven-and-a-half-year suspension on Nhill coach Darren Weavell to 18 months for his part in the incident. “I feel the first penalty handed out was just but I was not privy to all the details,” Dalziel wrote. “My first thought was that if you strike an umpire you should suffer the full wrath. It’s a bit like assaulting a member of the police force – they are there to serve and protect and might make errors like any other human. But nine times out of 10 they are there to help. “I am not going to sit here and pretend

I am a saint. But for goodness’ sake, let’s go to the footy, have a laugh and barrack loudly but don’t step over the line. “Let’s all take a deep breath, look out for our volunteers and don’t let the game get that out of hand. It just takes commonsense to know what’s right and what’s
wrong and in this case, no excuses, it was wrong. “I wish both parties involved all the best – I do believe in second chances. You can certainly give something back to make amends, but trust and respect would be the two most important.”

new $300,000 clubrooms. The club will also have a raffle during the night to help raise money for Wimmera Health Care Group Foundation. Club fund-raising and sponsorship director Nadine Miller said the event, which started with a 6.30pm dinner, was open to the public. “It should be a big night and it is a bonus to have a football legend such as Carl Ditterich attending,” she said.
“We’ve had a lot of success with our events and at a recent footy club talent quest we served 170 dinners so we’re expecting this to be just at big. Everyone is welcome.”
she said.
Mrs Miller said the clubrooms project was a gathering momentum with the district community strongly behind the concept.
Mrs Miller said items up for grabs at the auction included a vast list of goods from a flight over the Grampians to a wine barrel, bicycles and loads of wood as well a signed St Kilda jumper from Carl Ditterich.
“The reserve looks after three cricket sides, nine junior and three senior tennis teams, a school and fire brigade as well as football and netball,”
“We’re in the process of sourcing grant opportunities and expect to know more on how we’re going within the next two months.”

Giant-killers now target Bombers HORSHAM DISTRICT FOOTBALL LEAGUE
T
Rupanyup playmaker Nathan Sachse
Noradjuha-Quantong onballer Brent McIntyre
By GRANT KUCHEL
he first week of Horsham District Football League’s split round occurs this weekend with two games featuring and all the interest at Quantong where NoradjuhaQuantong will play host to a giant-killing Rupanyup side. Last week Rupanyup pulled off the upset of the season by beating Laharum and in the process held onto fifth spot on the ladder. Another win this week will go a long way to getting the Panthers into finals action. Noradjuha-Quantong’s season has again hit a little speed hump and although the Bombers boast the fourth best percentage in the league, they have a defence that leaks too many goals. The big questions will be asked of the Bombers’ backline because they need to contain the slick David Lang, bullocking Scott Nicholson and if he plays, tall Matt Tyler, for them to be any chance of overcoming the Rupanyup side. At the other end of the ground one of the premier back men in the competition Paul Trotter will have a ripping contest with Shane Oakley. The former backman come forward has been a revelation in attack, kicking more than 50 goals this season and his hard-leading and ability to win the ball on the ground will test Trotter. Nic Johnston and James Dixon will have a good duel in the ruck and the winner should be able give their side a huge advantage. Glenn Wyatt and the silky-skilled Nathan Sasche have been having great seasons for the Panthers in the middle of the ground, so if they get first use of the ball the Panthers will be looking for a quick kill. Brent McIntyre, Matt Ward and Simon Dandy are the barometers for the Bombers, who often rely on the trio to do a lot of the hard bullocking work around the stoppages. If they are held the Bombers lose their drive and a loss this week will officially stamp the Bombers’ papers as ‘season over.’

Finals spot Swifts make the trek from Stawell to Pimpinio this week, looking to jump back on the winners’ list and shore up their finals place. A slow start last week cost them against Kalkee and joint coaches Paul Hanns and Ben Martin will be drumming into the playing group that it needs to be prepared for the contest from the first bounce. Their opponents this week, Pimpinio would have been happy with their first half last week but the young side slipped away after half time and that would have disappointed coach Daryl Eastwell. The two key players to this game are Swifts duo Ricky Whitehead and Scott Carey. White-
head finally looks fit and back to his destructive best while Carey’s ability to run and carry the ball allows his side to break the lines and penetrate into the forward line quickly. Darcy O’Connor has had a stellar season for the Tigers and would be a sure bet to win their best and fairest and it would be a fitting contest if he goes to Carey or Whitehead if he plays in the middle because this would be well worth the admission on its own.
Sam Turmine, Dylan Baker and Ryan Ellis will need to make the most of every Tiger forward foray if they are to stay in the contest but the further the games goes the bigger-bodied Baggies will take control and they further cement their position in the top four.
Pimpinio will more than likely send Simon Risson to Swifts full forward Jeremy Joiner. Risson is probably the only Tiger who has the strength to go with Joiner and if Joiner gets on top, the big forward might be looking at a big bag.

Pumas and Magpies primed for top clash MININERA DISTRICT FOOTBALL LEAGUE By DEAN LAWSON
Moyston-Willaura winning an important shoot-out with SMW Rovers and Wickliffe-Lake Bolac too good for Penshurst in an astonishing turnaround.
Moyston-Willaura will attempt to draw even on points with WickliffeLake Bolac in a top-of-the-table clash in Mininera and District Football League on Saturday.
The Magpies so far this season have an unblemished record and the fact that they came from a long way behind in enemy territory last week was testament to their strength.
Moyston-Willaura only trails the Magpies by a game and percentage and an upset win at Lake Bolac would have all sorts of psychological implications in a run to the finals.
More than five goals down at the last change, Wickliffe-Lake Bolac produced an 11-goal-to-one final stanza to beat Penshurst comfortably. The result sent country football hotwires buzzing.
Both sides are coming off solid wins against fellow top-five outfits,
Michael Otto had the honour of
leading a best-player list with James Keys, Lachie Kelly and Mick and Richard Blackburn.
The contest is a major test for the Pumas who will back up the following week in a clash against Penshurst.
It is unclear how the MoystonWillaura brains trust will consider the result. Team leaders will be wary of the overt ability for their opponents to come back hard but are sure to also consider them potentially vulnerable.
Third-placed Glenthompson-Dunkeld will listen for the outcome with interest, safe in the knowledge that it should hold off Great Western at Glenthompson.
The Pumas shared goal-kicking spoils last week with Phil Brady starring with four, John Vanderwaal leading the way with seven and Dan Guinane bagging five and Callum Stevens four. Pat Frawley and Rhys Cronin were also impressive.
Top-five intrigue
The ultimate battle for third spot and the accompanying double chance come finals seems destined to hot up during the next few weeks. Penshurst, which would be still pondering what happened last week, is only a game and marginal percentage behind the Rams in fourth place.

ONE STRIKE WEEDS DEFEATED
It meets a Lismore-Derrinallum side, which has endured a mixedbag season, in a danger game at Penshurst. Fifth-placed SMW Rovers are also tenuously in the finals mix at the moment and while urging on LismoreDerrinallum to upset the Bombers will need to first concentrate on its game at Mininera and beating Tatyoon, also with designs on a top-five finish. In other games across the competition, Ararat takes on HawkesdaleMacarthur at Alexandra Oval and Caramut plays Woorndoo-Mortlake at Caramut.

Roos, Demons for mighty tussle WIMMERA FOOTBALL LEAGUE
E
By DEAN LAWSON
very year, regardless of the many intrigues that blossom throughout a football season there is a home-and-away contest that reminds everyone why the game continues to endure.
This year that contest will unfold at Horsham City Oval on Saturday. Historic and contemporary Wimmera League rivals Horsham and Dimboola are set to put on the best and most intense clash of the season in a game worthy of teams with legitimate claims on a premiership flag. What makes the contest so appealing is that both outfits are arguably the two best teams, not only in the league, but also the region. The game is sure to generate considerable interest for the casual country football follower as well as supporters. Dimboola, unbeaten this season and fresh from a huge win over Stawell, is a clear ladder leader. Horsham has come off second-best twice this season and had to work hard to haul in Warrack Eagles last week. Form and the glaring statistic of nine straight wins suggest the visiting Roos will enter the game as warm favourites. Uncertainty about the availability of midfield runners Andrew Seers and

Josh Rentsch aside, Dimboola has enviable balance across most lines. The Roos have a habit of allowing opponents to experience a sense of false hope early in games before turning on the afterburners. It’s a trademark of teams coached by Stuart Farr and perhaps simply reflects Farr’s insistence of intense pre-season preparations. It was the almost forgotten big man in the Dimboola 2013 equation Jayden Lehmann who reminded us last week of the Dimboola potency. To collect six goals and best-onground honours was no mean feat in
a team loaded with gun players. Lehmann, with workhorse Justin Chilver and talented Jackson O’Neil reflects considerable tall-timber muscle that tends to stretch most teams. We’ve spoken at length about Dimboola’s goal-kicking firepower led by Ash Clugston, Lachie Exell and now Lehmann, but it is also the Roos’ midfield dash and ability to wrestle control of the middle that is paying dividends. Clugston will be missing with representative duties. Allister McKinnon kicked four goals week and Nigel Sibson stood up and linkman Clancy Bennett impressed. Let’s not forget Ryan Bell.
from busting the lines from the middle. Dimboola will ultimately prevail, but it might well be by less than a kick.
Underdog Tigers The result will be far from the minds of a Nhill playing group that needs to somehow upset Warrack Eagles at Nhill. The Tigers are a game and percentage out of the five and the Eagles sit fifth. Nhill managed to pull out the stops when needed to beat Horsham RSL last week, Grant McLeod, Nathan
Merrett and Nathan Devanny leading best-player cards. The Eagles would have been disappointed after watching Horsham whittle away a sizeable lead last week and are likely to hit the Tigers hard. The Eagles have talent emerging through the ranks with Luke Kemp shining last week, Dale Hinkley kicking goals and Brock Orval consistently in the best. While coach Tim Inkster will be missed, Peter Weir looms as a major trump this weekend. Horsham Saints have an opportunity to rebound strongly against Horsham RSL in what looms as a miss-match at Coughlin Park. A loss to Minyip-Murtoa last week would have hit the third-placed Saints hard and they will be after a consolidating percentage-booster against the Diggers. Horsham RSL challenged Nhill for three quarters last outing and will again be competitive early. But the Saints will ultimately finish the stronger of the teams. This weekend also features a traditional Sunday encounter between Stawell and Ararat at Stawell. Battles for the Great Divide, with the Perc Bushy Cup up for grabs, rarely fail to live up to expectation and fans can expect a close nonnonsense clash. Ararat is coming off a bye but Stawell is playing at home where it is always hard to beat. The Rats will win in a death-knock finish.
The contest presents a smorgasbord of individual clashes. In-form Horsham forward Dylan Parish, always dangerous in attack, will present a rare test for the Roos defence. Joint coach Jordyn Burke and Nick Pekin will join Clugston in Sunday’s AFL Victoria Country Vic 2 side. Utility Garrett Liston will lap up the prospect of a test of muscle in the clinches and Joel Geue and Shaun Gilbert will seize any opportunities to find space. Dimboola will have to work hard to prevent the defensive run of Tyler Blake and prevent Brad Hartigan

Blues firm as northern favourites MALLEE FOOTBALL LEAGUE
B
The Devils have had a disappointing season, their consistency throughout games a massive issue.
STACKS ON: Ouyen United utility Mitchell Taylor looks for an option against Jeparit-Rainbow.
By MICK SHANNON
eulah has firmed as Mallee Football League premiership favourite after a strong 31-point victory over Sea LakeNandaly Tigers.
The Lakers have shown that they can play good footy and almost pulled off a massive upset against Ouyen United last week.
Picture: CONTRIBUTED
Elliot Bath and Chris Meyer have been in great form for the Lakers while veteran Heath Clugston continues to play well. The Devils will need Liam Price, Cade Wellington and Deek Roberts to have big games, but will need a huge lift from full forward Bryce Wellington.
The Blues unveiled new recruit Ryan McKenzie who produced a best-on-ground performance and along with team-mates fought hard to over-run the Tigers in the last quarter.
This should be a close game but the Lakers have proven to be the better team this year and will get over the line by 15 points.
Ouyen United meanwhile was lucky to overcome a determined Jeparit-Rainbow by the barest of margins while Walpeup-Underbool snatched victory over Woomelang-Lascelles by 12 points. This weekend’s action features three interesting games that will play a big part in how the top four finishes come the end of the season. The match of the round will see WalpeupUnderbool travel to Berriwillock to take on the Sea Lake Nandaly Tigers. The Roos are starting to get their full side on the park and are on a five-game winning streak. The Tigers ran out of legs in the last quarter against Beulah last week to suffer their second loss for the season. Walpeup-Underbool possesses a potent midfield with Luke Nathan, Ben Fisher, David Piasente and Kane Munro all playing good footy. The slick-footed on-ball brigade makes it easy for forwards Wade Champion and Tyson
Blues Gordon to take marks on the lead. Sea Lake Nandaly Tigers will be out to make amends for their loss last week though and Colin Durie, Tom Summerhayes and Joseph Summerhayes will work hard to grab victory.
Simon Weekly will need a big match after having a quiet couple of weeks. Walpeup-Underbool will be desperate to win so it can draw even on points with the Tigers in second position.
Stephen Lyons will have a big job on his hands when he comes up against Walpeup-Underbool key forward, Wade Champion. Lyons has been in terrific form for the Tigers this season while Champion is a premier forward averaging more than five goals a game this season. The winner of the battle could very well determine the victor.
The Tigers will be looking for a two-game break on the Roos to cement themselves in the top two.
Tigers full forward Cliff Ryan was well held by Luke Spasic last week and will be looking to have a big game to get his team over the line.
Hopetoun will be looking for its first win of the season when it takes on Jeparit-Rainbow at Hopetoun.
A tough game to pick, but the Tigers will make the most of their home ground advantage to win by 10 points.
First win?
Beulah travels to Ouyen to take on Ouyen United. The Blues sit on top of the ladder while the Demons are a game clear in fourth position. Beulah’s midfield of Micah Buchanan, Tyler Lehmann and Ryan McKenzie will have too much class and skill for the Demons. This will result in the Blues taking control at the clearances to give their forwards every chance of kicking a big score. Young Demons Ben Mole, Jordan Manly and Aron Morrish will need to produce big games to get the ball into the hands of Damian Cupido up forward, but they will have their backs against the wall especially with key on baller Peter Caldow out injured. Beulah will produce another good performance to win by 30 points.
King jumps to maiden Warrnambool success was in charge of riding duties on the soupy heavy-10 track, with local bagmen rating the brown gelding a $3.60 chance to break his hurdle duck at the jumps racing Mecca.
The Terry and Karina O’Sullivan show continued to roll on this week when the Stawell-based duo ventured to Warrnambool for a big day in jumps racing on Sunday. The O’Sullivan camp had up and coming stayer King of Africa engaged in a maiden hurdle over 3200 metres, carrying a prize purse of $20,000. Irish ex-pat jockey Martin Kelly
Once the starting stalls crashed back King of Africa was placed in the firing line. As the great Jack Styring once said, ‘he was showing his molars to the breeze’ and in doing so the five-year-old was kept out of trouble and in clear galloping room. He was jumping his obstacles cleanly and absolutely thriving in the moment with his ears pricked. As the field of 10 leaping neddies entered the famous steeple lane, King of Africa was travelling like the winner. After putting in a few powerful leaps over the final hurdles the son
of Shamardal rocked to the front in the straight and under Kelly’s unique riding style powered to the line for a three-length victory. After this latest performance the O’Sullivans and King of Africa should have a part to play in the remaining jumps season and one would think in the seasons to follow.
Quizman at Bendigo The massive week for the O’Sullivan father-daughter training combination continued as they travelled to Bendigo last Thursday with two more of their emerging gallopers, Quizman and Vihanna Victory. Quizman was taking his place in a restricted 2400m staying test. Champion Group One jockey Nicholas Hall was in the pig skin for the equine
endurance test.
the sticks.
Once the starter released the field Hall elected to take the brown fouryear-old to the lead, allowing him to bowl along with no pressure from rival gallopers.
The O’Sullivans’ other representative Vihanna Victory also took out her event – a showcase event for fillies’ and mares over 1600 metres again with Nicholas Hall in the saddle completing the winning double for trainer and jockey.
Approaching the 400m marker the gelding looked to be travelling like the winner. The son of New Zealand champion St Reims gave a strong kick responding well to the urgings of Hall after entering the straight. Eventually outstaying second place getter Hobbscotch bolting away to score a three-length victory. After this strong performance on the flat it would be no surprise to see Quizman be prepared for a jumps race in the not too distant future and he should acquit himself well over
In brief Horsham Jockey Dean Yendall booted home two winners in as many days scoring aboard Mio Dio at Warrnambool and Mabrouk at Mildura for trainers Wez Hunter and Darren Weir respectively. • Josh Mackay delivers the late mail on thoroughbred racing each Saturday morning from 9am on 1089 3WM.

Australia’s cheapest cars to own M
itsubishi’s re-born Mirage light car is Australia’s cheapest car to run, according to a survey from the RACV, while Nissan’s new V8 petrol Patrol was the most expensive tested.
Maxx Sport and Nissan X-Trail TS rounded out the list of compact SUVs on $221.88 and $224.05 respectively.
Korean car-maker Hyundai won the medium-size SUV category with Santa Fe Active, $221.01, edging out the Holden Captiva 7 CX on $223.10.
The five-door Mirage hatch came out on top in the annual Vehicle Operating Costs survey that determines the running cost of a car by factoring in financing, scheduled servicing, depreciation, insurance and registration, tyres and fuel over a five-year/75,000km period. The Mirage ES took the crown with an average weekly cost of $112.81, just ahead of last year’s winner – the Suzuki Alto on $113.31.
Fuel savers Other top performers included Holden Barina Spark CD on $116.47, and the Volkswagen Up with an average cost of $124.07. A couple of fuel-saving hybrids trailed the light car pack, including Honda’s recently-released Jazz hybrid – $159.81 a week – and the Toyota Prius C, $164.89. Ford scored a win in the small car category, with its Focus Ambiente hatch costing $157.18, beating out the Hyundai Elantra Active – $157.81 – and Holden’s locally-built Cruze Equipe, $158.60.
Ford’s Aussie-built Territory TX has the second-highest average weekly cost of $252.29, ahead of only the Toyota Kluger KX-R, $263.08. Jeep’s Grand Cherokee Laredo petrol was the cheapest all-terrain SUV with costs of $258.43, pipping the Mitsubishi Pajero GLX on $272.91. VALUE BUSTER: The RACV has named the Mitsubishi Mirage the cheapest car in Australia to run, with an average cost of $112.81 per week.
While hybrid cars may save money on fuel, the initial cost and, in some cases, higher levels of depreciation put them at the bottom of the list with the Toyota Prius costing $197.61 and Honda’s Civic hybrid sedan $205.28. Likewise, electric cars may be cheap to run, but heavy depreciation actually makes them more costly to own than you might think. Mitsubishi’s baby i-MiEV, now axed here, averaged between $239.87 and $258.64 per week, the Nissan Leaf costs $250.41, and the Holden Volt plug-in costs between $282.45 and $305.61 per week. Volkswagen’s Jetta 118 TSI topped
the best value medium-sized car category with a figure of $185.33, ahead of the Kia Optima Si on $197.38, while Toyota’s local hero Camry hybrid bucked the trend of low rankings for electrified vehicles with $199.74 for a third placing. Perhaps unsurprisingly, some premium European offerings were the most expensive medium-sized cars to run, including the BMW 320i – $305.23 – and the Mercedes-Benz C200 BE, $319.60. The new VF Holden Commodore Evoke LPG was named cheapest large car to run on $214.17 per week, the petrol version placed second with
$219.62, while the Ford Falcon XT came last with $245.17. People-movers recorded similar results to large cars with the Honda Odyssey winning its category with an average weekly cost of $223.59. The Kia Sportage Si’s low servicing costs helped it claim the title of best value compact SUV this year – $187.54, followed by the Nissan Dualis ST and Hyundai ix35 Active, tied on $190.00 each. The top six best-value compact SUVs were all front-wheel drive models, with their thirstier all-wheel drive counterparts more expensive to run. The top-selling Mazda CX-5
Costliest All-terrain SUVs were the most expensive category in the survey, with the Toyota LandCruiser GXL costing $387.62 per week to run and Nissan’s hulking new Patrol ST-L petrol the costliest vehicle on the entire list with calculated weekly costs of $397.84. Chalking up a win for Australian car-makers was the Ford Falcon EcoLPi two-wheel-drive ute taking out its category with weekly costs of $184.72. Toyota’s HiLux SR workhorse grabbed the crown for best value 4WD ute at $246.76, ahead of the Holden Colorado LTZ on $280.20. Tim Nicholson © GoAutoMedia, 2013

No to local SUV H
olden says it cannot justify making an SUV in Australia alongside the next-generation Cruze and Commodore unless it can secure a ‘massive’ export deal – something it says is unlikely considering the high dollar.
Furthermore, while SUV sales are high, Holden chairman and managing director Mike Devereux says the glut of models now in the marketplace means none achieve the overall volumes required to justify local production. It has been speculated that Holden has considered building an SUV at its South Australian factory to capitalise on booming segment sales, thereby adding crucial volume to the loss-making facility. Adding a layer of credibility to this is the fact that the platform set to underpin the nextgeneration 2015 Australianmade Cruze small car, known as D2XX, will form the basis of a General Motors SUV line. The Australian Workers’ Union also urged Holden to consider shifting some Captiva production from South Korea
GRAND DADDY: Citroen’s Grand C4 Picasso maintains the same length but has more interior space than the outgoing model.
NO GO: Holden says a locallly made SUV would not attract enough volume to make it cost-effective, even though its current Capitva 7 and Captiva 5 range has collectively outsold Commodore this year.
to its Elizabeth plant, following a similar path to the Cruze.
that’s a tougher equation for us,” he said.
However, Mr Devereux told a business lunch that a locally built SUV was not on the cards for the company, despite the sales trend towards the vehicles.
“We try to stick with making a couple of cars that can be super-popular and then if we can export, we do it opportunistically like we do with the SS – a Commodore rebadged as a Chevrolet for the US market, but you know we might export 15,000 or 20,000 cars next year, not 100,000 cars.”
VFACTS figures to the end of May show that SUV sales are up 11.5 percent this year, with more than 136,000 examples of the high-riding wagons sold in the first five months. “A business case for us to do SUVs here would also have to be predicated on us having a massive export footprint, and with the uncertainty around the cost of the dollar here, and the manufacturing costs,
Mr Devereux said the sheer scale of choice for SUV buyers meant even the biggest sellers struggled the get the requisite volume to justify local manufacture. Mike Costello © GoAutoMedia, 2013
Citroen Grand C4 goes techno
Citroen’s next-generation C4 Grand Picasso peoplemover has just the thing for weary mums and dads — massaging seats.
The French car maker has revealed its latest version of the seven-seat family transporter, showing a vehicle that is now lighter, more spacious and technologically advanced. A highlight for parents, though, has to be the inclusion of an options pack that adds a massage function to both front seats. The seven-seat people mover looks set to arrive in Australian showrooms in the first half of next year and features a striking look previewed by the futuristic-looking Techno-
space concept at this year’s Geneva motor show.
The concept’s design has carried over with few changes to the smaller, five-seat C4 Picasso unveiled in April. The seven-seat version has the same rounded front as the Technospace, with the brand’s twin chevrons curving out to the quarter panels where they incorporate slim-line LED daytime running lights. Unlike the Tehcnospace, the people-mover features individual 3D-effect LED taillights. The Grand C4 Picasso’s side profile emphasizes its length, and Citroen says it has increased cabin and cargo space without stretching the length
of the new version.
However, moving to a platform that it will share with the Peugeot 308 hatchback has allowed Citroen to extend the wheelbase by 110mm to 2840mm, which it says is the longest in its segment. The extra wheelbase has resulted in 217mm of extra knee room in the second row, and 108mm in the third row, which Citroen claims is also best in segment. Moving the rear wheels back by compared with the fiveseat C4 Picasso has improved access to the removable third row of seating, it says. Tim Nicholson © GoAutoMedia, 2013

‘Vital’ new Mazda3 breaks cover T
he third-generation Mazda3 small car has broken cover at last, brandishing a lower and wider body, roomier interior, improved connectivity and a completely new undercarriage.
Measurements will be revealed later but Mazda says rear-seat space for shoulders and legs increases as an upshot of the wheelbase stretch, though it remains to be seen as to whether cargo volume also jumps. Beneath what is said to be a far-more pedestrian impact-friendly snout are engines cribbed from the CX-5 and Mazda6.
Due to be launched in Australia in the first quarter of next year, the ‘BM-series’ small car is charged with regaining market leadership from Toyota’s now top-selling Corolla – a feat Mazda believes is well within its grasp next year. “Mazda3 has been the top selling car in Australia for the past two years, its sales are holding up strongly and we are confident that it could again be a favourite,” Mazda Australia managing director Martin Benders said. “It is the most important model in Mazda’s history.”
SkyActiv Sharing almost nothing with its Ford Focus-based five-year old ‘BLseries’ predecessor, the latest Mazda3 adopts the same SkyActiv chassis and drivetrain technology first seen last year in the CX-5 SUV and continued with the latest Mazda6. These include versions of the above models’ engines, transmissions, suspension, and steering systems, as part of Mazda’s modular platform approach, designed to vastly improve efficiencies and profitability.
On the SkyActiv-G petrol front, the volume-selling 2.0-litre models in the equivalent to today’s Neo and Maxx models will generate 114kW of power and 200Nm of torque to the front wheels via a six-speed manual or automatic transmissions. COVERS ARE OFF: Mazda hopes its slinky third-generation small-car staple will wrench back the title of Australia’s top-selling car from the Toyota Corolla.
Shrouded in the company’s latest ‘Kodo’ design theme, the new Mazda3 will follow its direct predecessors in being offered in just two body shapes – five-door hatch and four-door sedan. The latter was absent from the simultaneous worldwide unveiling held in five locations worldwide – Melbourne, Istanbul, London, New York and St Petersburg – but is to follow ‘very soon’ according to Mazda. Likewise, other major engineering, technical, and marketing details will have to wait until later on this year, with the Japanese brand electing to focus on the new design instead for
the time being. Using Kodo as a base, the Hiroshima-based designers elected to give the latest generation a more aggressive ‘in motion’ look compared to the CX-5 and Mazda6, to help lure younger buyers. A 60mm longer wheelbase, 40mm wider stance, 15mm lower roofline, and shorter overhangs help give the Mazda3 a sportier appearance, aided by a more ‘cab backward’ silhouette, faster rear screen angle, and broader shoulder blades over the wheel arches. In turn, special attention was paid to
improving aerodynamics – the slipperiest Mazda3 is rated at just 0.275 Cd – and losing weight, though by how much remains a secret for now. Inside Mazda is making big noises about how much quieter and more premium the cabin is, but the real changes surround the Volvo V40esque central instrument dial and digital readout combination, as well as a pop-up heads-up display unit. An Audi A3-like ‘floating’ centrally sited media connectivity screen makes its debut in a Mazda vehicle, while more slush-moulded plastics and other fancier materials point to higher-quality finishes.
Fuel efficiency Mazda says a ‘slight drop’ in kerb weight and the more aerodynamic body improve fuel efficiency, with the 2.0-litre bettering the current BL SP20’s 6.1 litres per 100km by some margin. Moving up to what we know today as the SP25 ushers in the 2.5-litre unit as first seen in the Mazda6, bringing 138kW and 250Nm to the table. No diesel timeframe has been divulged, but Mr Benders told GoAuto that he has put his hand up for one. We’re expecting it to be the same 129kW/420Nm 2.2-litre SkyActiv-D engine as in the others. Falcon’s facelift F
ord’s local design chief Joel Piaskowski’s body clock might still be on US summer time, but that’s not holding him back as he puts the finishing touches to what will be the world’s final Falcon. Having only arrived in Australia as Ford’s director of design for Asia Pacific and Africa, Mr Piaskowski appears to have slipped straight into the country and the job. A job, he says, which encompasses last-minute tweaks to the facelifted Falcon due in the second half of 2014, destined to be the last of the line when Ford stops manufacturing here in October 2016. “It’s really great to be here,” he told GoAuto. “It’s a car country with a car culture – and that’s what makes it exciting.” Having been born and raised in Michigan, not far from Detroit, he feels right at home here. And familiar sights on the road help build his comfort levels. “What’s really neat is to see the amount of Mustangs, classic Mustangs, driving around,

both left hand drive and right hand drive.” A veteran of 21 years in automotive design, Mr Piaskowski had worked at General Motors, Hyundai and Mercedes-Benz before he was appointed as Ford’s director of exterior design for the Americas in 2010. Although the facelifts for the last Falcon and Territory models were set when he arrived in Australia earlier this year, he has been able to have some influence. “When I came on, the design was set and we’ve just been working on the delivery and the commercialisation process
of it.” But there is still some tinkering being done, he admitted. “We are still designing elements of it, details of it. We had a big design review today, actually, on the tail lamp. There were lots of opinions.” He said there would also be a mild facelift for what will be the last Territory, and that was being wrapped up right now. Mr Piaskowski said there would still be plenty of work for the design studio to do after the last Australasia-only models were completed. Barry Park © GoAutoMedia, 2013
Honda’s crash-avoidance technology, which debuted here on the new Accord in May, can now be optioned on the popular CR-V compact SUV. The Advanced Driver Assist System, which bundles in a host of high-end active safety technology, is now a $3500 option on the range-topping CR-V VTi-L. However the same kit on the all-new Accord is only a $3000 option on mid-specification variants, and standard kit on the range-topping V6engined Accord V6L. ADAS features a system that can measure the distance from the car in front, and warn the driver if it thinks a collision is
likely, applying the brakes and pre-tensioning the seatbelts.
It adds a system that uses a windscreen-mounted camera to detect when the CR-V strays out of its lane, and steers it back. Also included is adaptive cruise control, which will automatically keep a set distance from the vehicle in front at freeway speeds. Honda has also added two new colours – a white and grey – to its palette. Pricing for the CR-V VTiL with ADAS starts from $45,790 before on-road costs, which is $3500 more than the standard price of the VTi-L without the safety technology.
pushes the CR-V into similar all-wheel-drive soft-roader territory as the Ford Kuga Titanium petrol that retails from $44,740 and the top spec Mazda CX-5 Akera that sells from $45,770. Honda’s remodelled CR-V has sold 5883 units in the first five months of 2013, making it the fourth best-selling compact SUV in Australia. It trails the Mazda CX-5 with 8057 sales to the end of May, Toyota’s all-new RAV4 on 6049 sales and the Subaru Forester on 5897 sales. Honda is slated to add a diesel version of the British-built CR-V early next year.
