Coroner finding: Get your heater serviced

T

By DEAN LAWSON

he managing director of a Wimmera-wide gas appliance and service provider has backed coroner recommendations and urged householders to have their heaters checked every two years. Adrian Wade from Wades Gas and Paint in Horsham said some heaters across the Wimmera, due to a simple lack of maintenance, were failing safety checks. He said while gas remained a safe and reliable source of fuel and most heaters passed safety checks, it was important that people called in licensed gas fitters for servicing.

“Gas is the same as any other power source such electricity or petrol. Safety only becomes an issue in domestic circumstances in the absence of regular maintenance, monitoring, care and understanding,” he said.

Mr Wade was responding to a Victorian Coroners Court finding last week into the deaths of two Shepparton children killed in their sleep by carbon monoxide poisoning. The Age reported that Coroner Jacinta Heffey found that a build-up of soot, dust and lint in a gas heater prevented oxygen getting into the appliance, creating a high level of carbon monoxide. She urged statewide agencies to continue to

raise public awareness about safety issues and encouraged homeowners to have their heaters serviced.

Odorless “Gas appliances are generally reliable but a heater might fail because of big problem such as a cracked heat exchanger. But they can also fail for simply having a blocked flu,” Mr Wade said. “Anything that involves combustion has by-products and with carbon monoxide it is odorless. There are no warning signs and the average person won’t know it’s happening unless they have their appliances checked,” he said. “We don’t care who you get

to do the check but it’s important to remember that there is a difference between a general plumber and gas fitter. Critically, a licensed gas fitter is qualified to do a carbon monoxide test. “The parents of those kids have been really proactive. They know they can’t change what happened but they are trying to hopefully stop it from happening again. “Do whatever needs to be done to have appliances checked regularly. Put it in the calendar and don’t ignore it or put it off when the time comes. From our point of view we don’t want tragedies like what happened in Shepparton happening in the Wimmera.”

Looking for love in the Wimmera

A

re you male, single and looking for love? Or do you know someone aged between 25 and 39 in that position who might need help.

Well get ready because producers planning a new dating reality television show want eligible bachelors from the Wimmera to put up their hands. Southern Star Entertainment, producing a program called When Love Comes To Town for the Nine Network, is on the hunt for regional candidates for the show. Producers have identified the region based on Ararat, Stawell and Horsham as having potential to produce the right sort of candidates to match up with single city women and where they could shoot an episode. From its description, the show sounds like a television version of Harrow’s successful Beaut Blokes concept. Casting producer Jessica Brown said from Sydney that the idea was to take a busload of 12 city women struggling to find ‘Mr Right’ to country centres and introduce them to a couple of ‘local’ men. She said, depending on where nominations

came from, there would be two eligible bachelors selected in each of the regions the bus visited. The women would have a chance to date the men and learn about their lives, passions and community connections. “For the moment we are on a nationwide hunt for blokes,” she said. “Ideally they will come from beautiful towns or regions we can show off to the rest of Australia. We basically need two guys who can be anyone from teachers, truckies, builders to vets and farmers. We’re not picky but we want nice blokes, the ones who would speak highly of their mums and be kind to their sisters. “It’s a chance for these guys to meet someone they wouldn’t usually have a chance to meet. And they don’t have to do any hard work – we’re doing it all for them.” Producers have stressed that the show is not a competition and there is no prize money. They have asked for men with ‘a genuine interest to find love’ aged between 25 and 39 to apply. To apply to be one of the men in the show Wimmera bachelors can fill out an application form on website www.whenlovecomestotown. com.au.

International teaching duo set up business A husband and wife team fresh from teaching in various schools around the world has established a consultancy business in Horsham to help fellow teachers gain international experience.

Become one of the most sought after professionals in minerals processing.

Daryl and Cathy Taber, drawn to the Wimmera by family connections, are keen to share knowledge gleaned from years of teaching in countries including China, Vietnam and Indonesia. Their Travel and Teach business is designed to help teachers across Australia find pathways or gain footholds in the international teaching industry. The Tabers have set up in the Wimmera to be close to their two daughters who have moved to Horsham and other family members at Kaniva. Mrs Taber is originally from Kaniva and Mr Taber taught at Kaniva in the mid 1980s.

Opportunities Mr Taber said there were considerable opportunities for Australian teachers to gain a ‘global experience’ and Travel and Teach could provide important connections and guidance to help make the experience happen. “It’s about providing opportunities for qualified teachers who wish to enhance themselves in their profession while obtaining lucrative salary packages while living in another part of the world,” he said. “International schools have a global curriculum and Australian teachers, because they are usually multi-talented

and come with flexibility, are highly sought after.” Mr Taber said the business would have free-of-charge introductory Global Teaching Solutions seminars at Wimmera Business Centre in Horsham between 5pm and 6pm and 6.30pm to 7.30pm next Wednesday. “It’s not about taking good teachers away from Australia, it’s more about giving them a chance to become more experienced from a global perspective and perhaps bringing those skills back home,” he said.

“Australia and the Wimmera are becoming more and more multicultural. If for example teachers were to leave the Wimmera for a couple of years and came back they would return much better teacher for the experience and everyone would benefit.” Mr Taber said while the firm would have its headquarters in Horsham, he would spend a lot of time promoting the concept in capital cities. He said people could find out more by visiting website www.travelandteach.com.au.

Don’t go ‘missing in action’ in September

EDITORIAL By DEAN LAWSON

C

onsidering the sacrifice and effort of the past it seems incredible that the Australian Electoral Commission had to launch a campaign to find ‘missing’ voters.

Apparently 1.4-million Australians are missing from the electoral roll and the commission is asking communities to encourage these people to come forward and vote at the federal election. It is far from surprising that half a million of the ‘missing’ voters are aged between 18 and 24.

Sometimes as a young adult, particularly if you have grown up in a politically ‘safe’ electorate, it is hard to see how your individual vote might influence what happens in Canberra.

No doubt many of us at some point have asked: ‘What’s the point, I might as well just register a donkey don’t-care vote?’ On the surface at least it is hard to argue against this perception. For some of us, feeling of helpless in what might seem a pointless exercise, it can also be tough to identify character and objectivity during ugly political dogfights. But we should never take our individual vote for granted. Ambivalence about the value

Wednesday, August 7, 2013

of having a qualified say on governance reflects naivety and is at worst, gross negligence.

Sacrifice Around the world there are oppressed people searching for a democratic say and risking their lives and the lives of their families and friends for a chance to vote. Who knows what environment we might be living in had Australians failed to understand the value of freedom during the Second World War. Many paid the ultimate sacrifice. Also, cannot forget those brave women of the suffrage movement of the late 1800s and early 1900s who went to

Overhaul for lakes Facilities at two of the most popular recreational lakes in the central Wimmera are set for a major overhaul with confirmation of State Government funding.

The State Government will pump $160,000 into a $240,000 overhaul of Horsham Yacht Club and picnic amenities at Green Lake, south-east of Horsham, and $145,000 into a $229,000 vehicle bridge over the mouth of Natimuk Creek at Natimuk Lake Caravan Park. Member for Lowan Hugh Delahunty confirmed funding arrangements for the lakes through Victoria’s Regional Growth Fund late last week. Mr Delahunty said Green Lake plans included include a pergola and barbeque area, an irrigated lawn for picnics, handrails to provide safe access to the beach areas, and improvements to an existing amenities block. “The yacht clubhouse will get an upgraded kitchen and accessible toilets and showers, which will benefit users of the facility, including local children learning to sail, and participants in successful yachting events such as the annual OK Dinghy Regatta,” he said. “This project will create a safe, attractive and family-friendly environment.”

Mr. Delahunty said Horsham Rural City Council, Horsham Yacht Club and Green Lake Committee of Management were funding partners.

The new bridge at Natimuk Lake is part of long-term Natimuk Lake Foreshore Committee planning and will provide access for motorists over the mouth of Natimuk Creek. Designed to increase camping opportunities and allow the public to make full use of facilities, it will replace a pedestrian swing bridge.

Full access Mr Delahunty said water skiers, campers and other outdoor enthusiasts will soon benefit from ‘full access’ to Natimuk Lake Caravan Park. “The construction of the bridge will generate economic rewards as it boosts exposure of Natimuk’s small businesses to visitors staying at the caravan park,” Mr Delahunty said. “The project will also enhance facilities at the lake, considered to be an important environmental and recreational asset in the region.” The lakes’ eligibility for regular water supply, despite being outside regional supply planning schemes, has been the subject of considerable debate.

prison or on hunger strikes because they dared to demand a say.

Perhaps some of us, to understand, need to ask an Indigenous person what it was like to not qualify as a voting Australian before 1967. Now, with Prime Minister Kevin Rudd declaring September 7 the date for the federal election, it is time for us all to consider how we want to use the vote that so many before toiled so hard to win.

The rally will take the form questionand-answer debate involving candidates with mediation from former Weekly Times journalist Peter Hunt. Wimmera Development Association executive director Jo Bourke said the debate would provide a chance for Wimmera voters to see candidates in action only a few days before the September 7 poll. “Mallee has been the safest federal coalition seat in Australia but with a long list of candidates we are expecting good debate during the election campaign.” “I urge Wimmera residents to come and ask the candidates about issues that matter to them. “Since 1949 only three members Sir Winton Turnbull, Peter Fisher and John Forrest have held this seat and the community needs to be a part of it.”

Changes to bridge

Wednesday, August 7, 2013

T

raffic conditions on the Wimmera River bridges in Horsham has changed again as progress on an upgrade project continues.

All traffic was scheduled to move to an east bridge early this week, signalling the start of stage three of the project. The west bridge was scheduled to close to allow for footway widening, bridge-barrier construction and concrete decking work. VicRoads has advised that traffic will remain on the east bridge for about four months as contractors complete the works. Adelaide-bound traffic will enter and exit the east bridge via crossover points. Motorists will experience one lane of traffic in each direction on the east bridge and a speed limit of 40kmh. Warning signs will remain in place to advise of the changed traffic conditions. VicRoads is expecting traffic delays as part of the switch and has encouraged drivers to plan trips in advance and leave early, especially during morning peak periods. The traffic switch follows completion of pile-driving work on the east bridge. VicRoads expects another traffic switch by the end of the year when bridge barrier construction, concrete decking works and the remainder of footway widening starts on the east bridge. The bridge upgrades include widening footways and road shoulders, installing bridge barriers between pedestrians and motorists and constructing a thicker concrete decking. The work is designed to create better and safer pedestrian and cyclist facilities, enhanced load capacity, and extend the life of the bridges. The project is expected to be complete in April next year.

he author of a best-selling book that provides insight into the life of Australian Vietnam war veterans will be a guest at a commemoration service in Horsham next week.

“We’re sending out 41 invitations to the veterans we know about in the region but there are probably others we don’t about,” he said. “You have to remember that a lot of the soldiers who came back from the war were thrown straight back into mainstream community. Because at the time there was a lot of feeling in Australia against the war many veterans, some for many years, didn’t mention they had even been there.

Wimmera sub-branch of the Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia has organised the visit through Horsham veteran John Finn who was in the army with Mr Heard.

He worked on his writing after recovering from the illness and produced Well Done, Those Men, published in 2005, which attracted rave reviews. The book is now the subject of an Australian film. Wimmera sub-branch vice-president Barry McClure said commemoration service organisers were delighted Mr Heard had agreed to come to the Wimmera. “It’s a bit of coup to have Barry coming. There are a lot of other veteran organisations that would have liked to have him at their services,” he said. “We decided to do things a bit differently this year and are making quite a big deal about the service and to get as many

of the many emotions and circumstances experienced by Vietnam veterans.

Barry Heard, who wrote Well Done, Those Men – Memoirs of a Vietnam Veteran, will attend Vietnam Veterans Day activities in Horsham on August 18.

Mr Heard fought in Vietnam as an infantryman and radio operator and after completing national service returned home and struggled with severe post-traumatic stress disorder.

Activities Commemoration activities will start at 10.45am with a short march of veterans down Hocking Street in Horsham before a service at a Vietnam Veterans Cenotaph at Sawyer Park. Mr Heard will make his address after an introduction by Horsham RSL sub-branch president John Brondsema and welcome from Horsham mayor Cr David Grimble. Mr McClure said Mr Heard would help provide further community understanding

Mr McClure said the sub-branch would be selling Vietnam Veteran badges at Horsham’s Safeway supermarket and Horsham Plaza during the three days leading up to the 18th. “We thought we would give it a go. All the money we make will be going to welfare support for veterans and their families,” he said. During the Vietnam War, which raged during the 1960s and early 1970s, Australia was involved in a United Statesled coalition supporting South Vietnam against Communist Vietnamese forces. Many Australian soldiers were conscripts drawn from a ballot and of the 521 killed during the conflict James McMillan of Horsham and Norman Hawker, Lillimur, were from the Wimmera.

he Australian Red Cross Blood Service is asking Wimmera people to consider becoming plasma donors. The service is making the plea on expectations that demand for blood products will double during the next 10 years.

Meeting agricultural, automotive and industrial needs

The service revealed that during the next 12 months Horsham blood donor centre would need 700 extra donors to make more than 3200 blood donations and almost 1800 plasma donations. It has enlisted the help of Wimmera plasma donor Alan Canane who has made more than 80 donations in a process that has been available in Horsham since last January. Mr Canane said donating plasma was similar to regular blood donation.

Second ultrasound for health service East Grampians Health Service has a second ultrasound machine to meet increasing obstetric services demand.

“It’s pretty much the same. The only differences are that it takes a little longer and my arm gets a bit cold. But it means I can donate more often,” he said.

Mr Newson said the second ultrasound machine would reduce waiting times from more than three weeks to one week and offer improved training for Ms Leeke.

Operation Christmas Child involves providing shoeboxes filled with ‘useful’ gifts to needy children in more than 100 countries worldwide. Ann said a first step for people keen to get involved would be to obtain a new brochure to gain an understanding about what could and couldn’t go into the gift boxes. “We want to try and get boxes by the end of September but of course people can start dropping them off right now. It’s important people gain information from new brochures,” she said. Each shoebox has to include something from six categories. These include: something for hygiene, such as a toothbrush, soap or face washer; something for school, such as pencils and exercise books; something to wear such as a hat or T-shirt; something to play with, such as a tennis ball, yo-yo or skipping rope; something to love, such as a soft toy; and something special which is open to imagination. There is a list of goods people can’t send such as food, damaged or breakable items, anything that might harm or frighten a child, gamblingrelated items or anything of a religious, racial or political nature. “I’ve been packing shoeboxes for about 12 years. It is an amazing way to show

unconditional love to a child,” she said. “It also opens doors for Samaritan’s Purse to do further aid work.”

Students A group of Stawell Secondary College students went as far as joining Samaratin’s Purse volunteers including Ann on a Rotary-backed shoebox trip and Water for Kids project earlier this year. Merlyn McFarlane of Vectis also went to Vietnam. Last year Wimmera and Southern Mallee people supplied 2176 shoeboxes. They were among 54,687 from Victoria and 308,263 from Australia that went to children in Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Fiji, Papua New Guinea or Vanuatu. The project started in 1993

and last year Samaratin’s Purse handed out the 100 millionth shoebox to a child in the Dominican Republic. DON’T MISS OUT ON OUR SATURDAY MORNING SELLOUT!!!! UP TO THE CHALLENGE: Run for Russ organiser Jackie Peacock, flanked by Raising Dust president Sheree Crawford, left, and treasurer Jess Cass at Cato Lake, Stawell. Picture: CONTRIBUTED

Dust money for heart challenge S

ocial group Raising Dust has donated $1000 to Sunday’s ACE Radio Wimmera Heart Challenge – Run for Russ.

President Sheree Crawford said Raising Dust, which was in the process of winding up, wanted to leave a legacy for the Stawell fun run. “Some Raising Dust members have a personal connection to someone who had or has a heart-related disease and we’d like to do what we can to raise awareness of heart health,” Ms Crawford said. “After the success of last year’s Wimmera Heart Challenge, we couldn’t think of a better way to disburse some of our club’s remaining funds. And I know a lot of us can’t wait to take part in the event.”

Event organiser Jackie Peacock said she had received about 100 entries so far, but was confident the number would exceed last year’s inaugural figure of 400. “Anyone with a reasonable degree of fitness can take part,” she said. “We’ll have the five-kilometre walk or run and the 10-kilometre run, both starting and finishing at Cato Lake. For kids under eight we’ll have a run around the lake for them. “We encourage everyone to enter online before the event, especially the teams which must register before the day.” Ms Peacock runs the Wimmera Heart Challenge in memory of her father Russell Peacock who died without warning from a heart attack,

aged 46. She wants to get ‘people moving’ and educate them about the importance of good heart health. Last year’s event raised $10,000. “It’s an ongoing concern that the Wimmera Grampians has one of the highest death rates from cardiovascular disease in Victoria,” she said. “Money raised from entries and sponsorship will go into the event trust fund for a heart-health awareness project in the future.” Stawell Field and Game Club will run a barbecue at Cato Lake. People can enter online at www.heartchallenge.com.au and find out more by emailing run@heartchallenge.com. au or phoning 0409 972 457.

More dairy for better bones A Warracknabeal dietician wants Wimmera-Mallee residents to improve their dairy intake to ensure their bones are getting enough calcium.

Studies show that more than eight out of 10 residents are not meeting their minimum recommended intake of milk, cheese or yogurt.

“The average Australian aged between 19 and 50 needs two or three serves of dairy each day to meet their requirements for calcium,” Ms Baulderstone said.

“One serve is the equivalent of a cup of milk, 200 grams of yoghurt or two slices of cheese. “And you should always remember to choose low-fat varieties.”

Dairy foods such as milk, cheese and yogurt are the biggest contributor of bone-building calcium in our diets. National Healthy Bones Week is a reminder of the role that calcium-rich foods play in the development and maintenance of healthy bones and the prevention of osteoporosis.

Rural Northwest Health’s Lauren Baulderstone said the figures were alarming and she would use the commemoration of Healthy Bones Week next month to raise awareness.

Healthy Bones Week is designed to educate Australians about the importance of developing and maintaining strong bones and encourages steps towards a healthier bone mass through the consumption of a calcium-rich diet, including dairy foods.

Mentoring Workshop

Environments

Many leaders are moved to “give back” and make a difference to those less experienced, but they don't necessarily know how to go about doing this. Mentoring is increasingly encouraged in organisations as an informal way to match leaders with less experienced people to develop their skills. To enhance the value of mentoring, leaders can benefit from training to build skill and confidence in focussing on the mentee’s needs and sharing relevant wisdom and experiences effectively.

Meeting to decide hospital’s fate

R

moved everyday operations into the new campus three months ago.

The building has not been in use since health service staff

Chief executive Catherine Morley said she wanted the community to have a say in the future of the former hospital site.

ural Northwest Health has organised a public meeting on Monday to discuss options for its former Beulah campus building.

“It’s been the community’s hospital, health services and medical centre for decades so it really is the community’s building and we want to know their opinion as to its future,” she said. “There are a few possible

Wednesday, August 7, 2013

options but of course with any decision we make, we will need to ensure that if an organisation is considering buying, using or removing the building, it will need to be financially responsible for any associated costs.

www.theweeklyadvertiser.com.au

“They might want to utilise it for other community or sports groups or the building could be relocated. “We just want to know what everyone is thinking.” Ms Morley will chair the

meeting in the PAG room of the new Beulah campus building at 5pm. She said it was likely that a date for the official opening of the new building would also be discussed at the meeting.

College prepares week of Chinese festivities Horsham College will celebrate all things Chinese next week. The school, which provides Chinese in its LOTE or Language Other Than English classes, is presenting Chinese Cultural Festival Week from next Monday to Friday with various activities at its library on its middle-school campus. Activities and events include exhibitions on Chinese tea, calligraphy, costumes and dance, traditional art and craft, cuisine

and music, kung fu and leisure activities. Horsham businesses with Chinese background or heritage are sponsoring the event. The school is inviting the public to attend with adults paying $5 and children $2 to experience the event. Horsham College students and staff will attend free of charge. Activities will be from 10am to 4.30pm during the festival week.

Beyond Blue forum Rotary Club of Horsham East will present a Beyond Blue forum on depression and anxiety at Horsham Sports and Community Club on August 30. The free-of-charge forum will be from noon to 1pm. ATTENTION! Dogs and their owners show off their skills during a Horsham Dog Obedience Club session. Pictured from left are Olly and owner Chris Baker, Jet and Catherine Olston and Jaz and Lynne Hutchinson. The club is welcoming newcomers for an annual membership of $60 a year. Guest John Hyland will be sharing his personal story with a ‘Road to Recovery presentation. Barry Sherwell and Lindy Muller will also attend to advise on the regional services to help people cope with the condition.

Supporting Local Community Groups The 2nd Horsham Scouts are set to become the proud owners of two new cross tents, having been granted $900 towards their purchase from the Horsham Sports & Community Club as part of the club’s 2013 sponsorship allocation.

WIN!

Committee member Felicity Pritchard said group numbers had flourished in recent times, resulting in the need for new tents to ensure all scouts will have access to a tent during camping expeditions to the Grampians, Dimboola and beyond. Since 1997, over $9,600 has been donated by Horsham Sports & Community Club to the group, including funding to modify a trailer, alongside upgrades to the scouting complex.

Agency helping EAT ALL ABOUT IT! more homeless Phone 5382 2203 for your

F

igures show a Wimmera support agency has provided support for more than 950 people who were homeless or at risk of homelessness in a nine-month period.

They reveal that Wimmera Uniting Care, between July last year and March this year, provided 365 days of accommodation with the average length of accommodation lasting 3.29 days. Agency housing program Leader Sue Martin said males represented more than half of the people presenting at the agency for housing help. She said the most predominant client group were single people, followed by single people with a child or children. “People between the ages of 20 and 24 are the most likely to be homeless, other than children under who are presenting with a parent of family group,” she said. “The main reasons people seek assistance is due to a housing crisis or financial difficulties. It can also be due to housing affordability stresses or inadequate housing conditions.” Ms Martin said the Wimmera statistics reflected national trends.

“According to Homelessness Australia, males are more likely to sleep rough or live in boarding houses,” she said. “More than one in three people experiencing homelessness are young people aged 12-24 years, which is the largest proportion of the homeless population.” Ms Martin said Wimmera Uniting Care, in 2009, established entry points for people experiencing homelessness. “This has established visible access points for local areas backed up by a network of services that share support, housing and brokerage resources,” she said. “Entry points are at Wimmera Uniting Care in Horsham and Stawell, and we share this support with Salvo Connect and Grampians Community Health.” Ms Martin said Wimmera Uniting Care was highlighting homelessness for the duration of Homeless Persons’ Week, which ends on Sunday.

She said people could call 5362 4000 for more information about the agency’s emergency housing program. They could also call 1800 825 955 toll free.

Youngsters make healthy footprint Holy Trinity Lutheran School in Horsham abandoned the classroom for a hands-on environmental lesson during Planet Ark’s national Schools Tree Day.

“It will make a difference not only to the river ecology, but also to the school environment with the plants acting as a windbreak and beautifying the grounds,” she said.

criteria, you will continue to qualify for the SG beyond age 70.

If you are over 60 years of age this financial year your concessional contributions cap will increase from $25,000 to $30,000 per annum. From 2014/15, those over 50 may contribute up to $35,000.

W

e can’t say we weren’t warned. In the 2012 and 2013 Federal Budgets, many reforms to superannuation were proposed with some being passed as law.

We discuss which ones got the tick and what has changed. As a result of the superannuation amendments being legislated, regardless of whether you’re an employee, employer or have a Self-Managed Super Fund, you will be affected in some way. Here is a summary of what you can expect:

AUGUST OFFER

Employees

$35 assessments (normally $75)

If you’re earning less than $37,000 each year, the government co-contribution is now limited to $500 as part of the Low Income Super Contribution scheme. Your entitlement will be calculated and contributed to your fund when you lodge your income tax return.

During your assessment we check: • • • •

Immune System Strength Energy Levels Digestion Allergies

• • • •

Acidic Levels Hormone Imbalance Stress Levels Plus More!

Since July 1, 2013, the Super Guarantee rate has increased from nine percent to 9.25 percent of your ordinary earnings. Make sure you check your next superannuation statement to ensure this increased amount has been deposited by your employer.

If you haven’t been on the biofeedback for 6 months or more, this is the ideal chance to have your system checked.

Visit us at www.jbwellness.com

Age limits for the SG have been removed so provided you meet eligibility

If your annual income is above $300,000, the contributions tax has increased from 15 percent to 30 percent and was backdated to apply from July 1, 2012. Employers As an employer you must increase your SG contributions from nine percent to 9.25 percent. You will also be required to make SG contributions to all eligible employees aged 70 years or over. A new data and e-commerce standard is being introduced to assist you with making super contributions to employees’ funds. The standard aims to reduce administration time and costs while providing a reliable electronic process. Employers with 20 or more employees must introduce the new data and e-commerce standard from July 1, 2014. If you have fewer than 20 employees you have until July 1, 2015. To learn more, the ATO website www.ato.gov.au provides further information. SMSF trustees Excess contributions can be refunded

and will be assessed at marginal tax rates. In addition, excess amounts will attract an interest charge.

The SMSF supervisory levy will increase to $259 and will move from an arrears payment to being paid in advance. SMSF trustees are required to consider insurance within the super fund as part of the overall investment strategy. After July 2014, the type of insurance cover will be limited to benefits that are consistent with normal superannuation release conditions such as death or a terminal illness. If you have been considering trauma or income protection cover inside your super fund, speak with your financial adviser about establishing this cover before 30 June 2014. Tighter administration and governance rules cover: • auditor registration; • related party transactions; • illegal early release; • investment strategies; and • asset separation and valuation. For details on how these changes might affect you, please contact your financial adviser. • Robert Goudie is an authorised representative of Meritum Financial Group Pty Ltd AFSL 245569.

O’Sullivans to star Angelology and the two steeds sped away to fight out the race. The son of Hong Kong superstar Hidden Dragon fought back taking the lead in the home straight and boxing on strongly to record a tough half-length win.

S

tawell father-daughter training duo Terry and Karina O’Sullivan have started the new racing season with a bang.

The O’Sullivan camp ventured to Moonee Valley last Saturday with their emerging galloper Stable Star. The four-year-old gelding was set for a 2500-metre benchmark handicap with Ballarat jockey Nikita McLean in the saddle, who herself was out to make a good impression on return from suspension. Stable Star was not rated by Melbournian punters at odds of around $30 in the ring despite a last start second placing. Once the starter released the field McLean rode with urgency taking Stable Star straight to the lead. The bay gelding was able to freewheel out in front running the race to suit himself. He made sure, by injecting some speed, the race was run at a solid tempo. Approaching the 600m marker Stable Star was headed by

The lucrative prize money cheque rocketed Stable Star’s stakes earnings to $85,000 in just 15 starts. Future wins in metropolitan staying races would not surprise.

Baker does the ’Tric

After responding to a couple of cracks around the tail with the shillelagh, the daughter of Golden Slipper hero Stratum came with a withering burst finishing over the top of eventual second place-getter Red Thriller, ridden by Glen Boss. The win was Stratric’s second in a 24-start career. Future wins on the synthetic surface over longer distances are on the horizon.

In brief

Riverside trainer Greg Baker has enjoyed a purple patch in recent weeks. His good form continued at the Geelong Synthetic Track late last week.

• Horsham jockey Holly McKechnie tasted metropolitan success at Adelaide’s Morphetville track on Saturday with Grand Group for trainer Ken Sweeney.

Baker’s staying mare Stratric was engaged in a 1900m restricted handicap with ever consistent jockey Dean Holland in the saddle. The duo were outsiders with odds of 40-1 on offer with Sleepy Hollow bookmakers.

• Terry and Karina O’Sullivan won their second race in three days scoring with Who Says I’m Ready in a 2000m maiden at Mildura last Monday.

Once the gates flew open the Melboure hoop opted to settle his mount towards the rear of the field in a patient display of riding.

Cauthen looks a serious horse after a second placing at his debut in Australia after a dominant win in New Zealand. He has come out for the Melbourne spring.

As the 12 staying neddies made their bids for victory Holland made his move rounding the hometurn peeling into clear galloping room to start his run with Stratric looming ominously.

Bruce signs with Taipan Horsham basketballer Shaun Bruce has earned his first professional playing contract, signing a oneyear deal with Cairns Taipans in the National Basketball League. Bruce, 22, is currently co-captain of the Ballarat Miners in the South East Australian Basketball League. He joined Cairns in 2012 as a development player where he won the inaugural Aron Baynes Award for Most Outstanding Athlete. Taipans head coach Aaron Fearne said that Bruce’s solid grounding with the Miners combined with his strong work ethic had made the signing an easy decision. “Shaun has had a very good grounding over the past two years – and then he came into the Academy and worked very hard to get stronger. He was extremely professional,” Fearne said. “As a development player he was always ready to go, always understood our scouting and proved he was capable of playing at the NBL level.” Bruce played 17 matches for the Taipans as a development player last season, and showed glimpses of a bright NBL future when he scored seven points in 14 minutes against the Wollongong Hawks in December. Bruce said his elevation to the Taipans roster was a dream come true. “I’m over the moon obviously; I

dreamed as a little kid and looked up to the NBL and wanted to be part of a club,” he said. I’m looking forward to next season and have a good feeling about the group that’s been put together.” Bruce follows his older brother Aaron, who played for the Sydney Kings in the NBL last season. The Miners play their last home game for the 2013 season this Saturday when they take on the Hobart Chargers at the WIN Minerdome in Ballarat.

alpeup-Underbool has shown it is not to be underestimated heading into Mallee Football League finals after defeating top side Beulah by eight points.

Mallee – Last week: Sea Lake Nandaly Tigers 20.15 (135) d Hopetoun 11.5 (71), Walpeup Underbool 14.8 (92) d Beulah 13.6 (84), Woomelang Lascelles 17.14 (116) d Jeparit Rainbow 5.3 (33)

Star David Piasente was dominant in the Roos victory.

Ladder: Beulah 48, 169.40; Sea Lake Nandaly Tigers 48, 159.96; Walpeup Underbool 44, 134.20; Woomelang Lascelles 28, 113.27; Ouyen United 20, 89.35; Jeparit Rainbow 8, 46.42

In other games Sea Lake-Nandaly Tigers easily took care of Hopetoun by 64 points while Woomelang-Lascelles easily accounted for Jeparit-Rainbow to the tune of 83 points.

Mininera – Last week: Hawkesdale Macarthur 15.6 (96) d Lismore Derrinallum 3.6 (24), Wickliffe Lake Bolac 16.13 (109) d Ararat 3.2 (20), Moyston Willaura 16.15 (111) d Caramut 7.4 (46), SMW Rovers 7.12 (54) d Penshurst 3.3 (21), Tatyoon 4.10 (34) d Glenthompson Dunkeld 3.7 (25), Great Western 13.17 (95) d Woorndoo Mortlake 5.7 (37) Ladder: Wickliffe Lake Bolac 60, 231.18; Glenthompson Dunkeld 48, 158.92; Moyston Willaura 48, 140.15; Tatyoon 40, 111.18; SMW Rovers 38, 118.36; Penshurst 36, 122.72; Hawkesdale Macarthur 36, 113.20; Lismore Derrinallum 30, 104.47; Great Western 24, 97.76; Caramut 16, 74.89; Ararat 4, 41.08

This week will see another three big games of football, as the top four sides all look to hit their best form as they head towards finals. Beulah will welcome Woomelang-Lascelles as it looks to get back on the winners’ list. The Blues played unaccountable football against Roos and were found wanting in certain areas of the match. The Cats on the other hand have produced fantastic footy over the last few weeks and will head into this game full of confidence.

NECK MINUTE: Jeparit Rainbow’s Chris Meyer wins a free kick for a high tackle against Woomelang-Lascelles on Saturday. Picture: CONTRIBUTED

This game will be a tough match for both sides, but the Blues is a classy team and will be determined to avenge last week’s loss. Beulah will come out victors by four goals.

Season finish

Corey Kelly and Trent Donnan are supplying the Cats’ midfield with class that is allowing Jayden Lonergan to kick goals.

Hopetoun will look to finish off its season with a victory when it takes on Ouyen United at Hopetoun.

Beulah will need to be right on its game and will need big games from Tyler Lehmann and Ryan McKenzie through the middle, while Dennis Redden will pose problems for the Woomelang-Lascelles backline if he gets enough opportunities.

The Devils have had a tough season, managing only one win so far while Ouyen United can still make the finals but will need to have a big win in this game.

Anthony Foott is back on track for the Cats and provides them with invaluable experience across the half backline. Joel Donnan has started to play some strong footy at centre half back and will have a huge task of trying to contain Dennis Redden. Beulah’s backline has been terrific all season with Brad Shannon providing run and carry while Luke Spasic and Dylan Turnbull have put the stops on many good forwards.

Hopetoun has left the job for too few this season with Luke Carr, Cade Wellington and Zac Robins carrying a bulk of the load. Robins continues to improve across the half backline while Carr has featured heavily in the goal-kicking this season. Damian Cupido looms as the destroyer and will need to find his early-season form to give his side a massive boost in percentage. Jerry Wilson runs hard all day for Ouyen United while Peter Caldow always plays well through the midfield. The young Ouyen United team will look to catch Hopetoun off guard, but the Dev-

ils will be desperate to finish their season with some success. This will be an extremely close game that should go to the wire. But Ouyen United will get on top to take home a sixpoint win.

Fantastic season Sea Lake Nandaly Tigers travel to Jeparit to take on Jeparit-Rainbow. The Tigers have had a fantastic season and will look to have a big victory against the Lakers. Simon Weekly has found top form, kicking 17goals in his last two matches, while Cliff Ryan sits second on the goal-kicking table. This provides the Tigers with an extremely potent forward line that should see them produce a big score. Heath Clugston and Elliot Bath continue to work hard for Jeparit-Rainbow through the centre while Andrew Watson can be dangerous up forward, especially if he is allowed to get a jump at the footy. Sea Lake Nandaly Tigers will be too strong across every line though, and will have a comfortable 60-point win. Walpeup-Underbool has the bye.

SPORT report

Southern Roos back in business place after succumbing in an upset to Pimpinio last week.

HORSHAM DISTRICT FOOTBALL LEAGUE

H

Swifts themselves suffered a surprise defeat but at home they will be a far harder proposition and led by Ricky Whitehead, Tom Ruggles and Paul Hanns, the Baggies should return to the winners list.

By GRANT KUCHEL

arrow-Balmoral has roared back into finals contention in Horsham District Football League and by getting the points against winless Taylors Lake this week should be odds-on to claim the last spot in the top five.

With veterans Brent Penny, Brent Forsyth, Ryan McClure and David Vickery leading the way, the Roos will have too much punch for a Taylors Lake side that is also odds-on, but to go through the season winless. Penny and Tim Cogger have formed a potent goal-kicking partnership and the Luke Robertson-led Lakers backline will again be under siege. Taylors Lake continues to lean on veteran Ian McCulloch, Jason Weir, Dean Harberger and Tim Kelm to perform and carry the side but they need more output from the likes of Max English, Brent Tough and Nathan Koenig if they are to trouble the finals-bound Roos. Mick Phelan and Tim Kelm will have a good duel in the ruck and if Phelan gets on top smaller Roos in Will Plush, Aaron McDonald and David Vickery will run riot. Noradjuha-Quantong heads to Kalkee and needs the biggest upset of the season to have a last-minute chance of making the finals. The task will be even harder with the Kees welcoming back 1982 and 1983 premiership to view the current side in action. Noradjuha-Quantong gave itself a chance with a solid win over Natimuk last week and the Bombers

Noradjuha-Quantong’s Matt Ward

Rupanyup can’t ask much more of Glenn Wyatt, Nathan Sachse, Paul Trotter and David Lang. Each week they are in the best-players list and they need their second-tier players to lift.

Harrow-Balmoral’s Brent Forsyth

know they have control of their own destiny. Matt Ward has hit a purple patch of form and with Jarred Combe and Brent McIntyre have been a driving force in the Bombers’ recent success. Oliver Young has become a springboard for Kalkee off the half back line. The youngster’s run and carry has set up many a score and the Bombers will need to negate his influence if they are to win. Kalkee’s usual culprits in Steve Schultz, Tim Wade, Paul Christian and Josh Mibus are big-game players and will want to impress in front of past players and ensure the winning streak continues. Noradjuha-Quantong’s forward line led by Shane Oakley and Adam Hall will need to make every opportunity a winner because their counterparts Josh Beddison, Adam Carter and Grant Schultz will see plenty of the ball.

Panthers assignment Rupanyup needs to inflict a second successive defeat on Swifts if it is to have any chance of snatching a finals

It is hard to see how Rupanyup negates the Baggies’ speed. The likes of Sean Mantell, Ash Cowen and Jake Goodes should show their opponents a clean pair of heels and give their side a much- needed confidence boost.

Reality check Pimpinio will be buoyant after a victory and takes on a Laharum side that copped a reality check from the premiership favourites and will be looking for redemption. Pimpinio will need to shut down a Dellar Medallist favourite in Robbie Miller and his partner in crime Daniel Easson. The duo has cut up plenty of opposition midfields and the likes of Darcy and Todd O’Connor will need to be at the top of their games to make it two in a row for the Tigers. Shannon Argall was held goal-less for the first time for the season last week and cohort Jason Przibilla also failed to trouble the goal umpires. They will bounce back hard this week against Simon Risson and Alex Hill. Argall will have sights firmly set on getting to his hundred. Sam Turmine played his best game for the Tigers last week and if he can get on top of Brett Ervin the Tigers will have a key target capable of

putting scoreboard pressure on the Demons.

Finals gone Natimuk treks down the highway to Edenhope knowing that after 16 rounds its finals aspiration are gone because the Rams need to defeat both last year’s grand finalists in the next fortnight to claim a spot. Edenhope-Apsley’s James Dixon and Will Smith will make life hard for in-form backman Callum Cameron and the laconic Tim Friend Edenhope Apsley’s engine room led by Brent Christie and Dave McLeish is close to top form, which must be reassuring for the coaching panel with finals so close. If Carl

Obst can dominate Simon Mentz the Saints’ onballers will be licking their lips. Natimuk will look to experienced Jono Lovel, coach Dylan Wright and skilful Shaun McDonald to lead from the front and to get their team-mates believing they can beat the Saints. But realistically their season is over.

Mininera’s final five battle set to go to the line MININERA DISTRICT FOOTBALL LEAGUE By JONATHAN BOX

Little separates ladder positions four to seven as Mininera and District Football League moves into the second last homeand-away games for this season. Tough games continue for teams fighting for the last few finals with seventh-placed Hawkesdale-Macarthur taking on second-placed Glenthompson-Dunkeld. Glenthompson-Dunkeld, which has worked hard to secure its top-three position the previous week, had a set back when they become Tatyoon’s latest scalp. In what was a low-scoring game, the Rams

managed only three goals in their nine-point defeat. Justin Coote, Michael Uebergang and Brad White were best on ground for Glenthompson-Dunkeld and they will be looking to put in another solid performance this week, against Hawkesdale- Macarthur. Regardless of the result, it is unlikely that the Rams will slip from their top-three position. It will be a tough game however because Hawkesdale-Macarthur has everything to lose. Like the other teams just out of the five, each week is a fight for survival for HawkesdaleMacarthur. In its most recent game, forwards Xavier McCartney and Danny Chatfield again dominated with midfielder Murray Habel for a 12-goal win over Lismore-Derrinallum. Penshurst, which had another shock loss last weekend, this time to SMW Rovers, slipped from the five, and now takes on the unpredict-

able Great Western. Last week Great Western had a convincing 58-point win over Woorndoo-Mortlake and has claimed some massive scalps throughout the season. Although Great Western is ninth on the ladder it will by no means be an easy beat for the Bombers. Benjamin Birch-Burton and Lachlan Molloy are on target in front of goals and ruckman Shannon Notting is providing plenty of drive from the middle. Penshurst will have to come out firing on all cylinders this week if it wants to get back in the five. Coach Justin Eales, who with brother Christopher have been consistently in the best for the Bombers, will look to work together to lead their team to victory.

In other games Lismore-Derrinallum plays Woorndoo-Mortlake at Lismore, Caramut will try to stop Tatyoon and Ararat and MoystonWillaura do battle. SMW Rovers, coming off their third straight win, will host Wickliffe-Lake Bolac.

Form the key Wickliffe-Lake Bolac, dominant all season, has lost only one game and with forwards Josh Keys and Daniel Smith, along with big man Bradley Keilar all kicking plenty of goals, will look to continue its good form into the finals series. SMW Rovers will hope that the good form of coach Rhys Cahir and captain Nicholas Byrne along with the return from injury of backman John Forbes will get them over the line.

Hurdles confront Saints, Burras WIMMERA FOOTBALL LEAGUE

W

By DEAN LAWSON

immera Football League finalists Minyip-Murtoa and Horsham Saints are set to face considering pre-finals tests when round-16 action unfolds this weekend.

Both are hovering somewhere between being good enough and not good enough to challenge grand-final favourites Horsham and Dimboola and Saturday presents an opportunity to ‘make a statement’. Minyip-Murtoa heads east to take on Dimboola while the Saints slip over to Horsham City Oval to play Horsham. All sorts of psychological spoils as well as points are up for grabs. For a start, the Saints and Burras are all but playing each other as well as the league leaders. Both are sitting on 44 points with the Saints holding sway in the coveted third spot by percentage. An upset win for either would go a considerable way to firming up a

pressive lock-down defensive game to stop the multi-pronged Roos.

finals double chance. It is a tantalising equation for both camps. If Minyip-Murtoa manages to somehow conjure victory against the Roos this Saturday it then has to front up against Horsham the following week before finishing the home-andaway season against Nhill.

The Burras smashed a relatively inexperienced Stawell team last week and kicked away to a big win. It remains to be seen if the Burras try to stop their opponents this weekend or take them on in a shoot-out.

If the Saints can somehow dismantle the Horsham game, it then swaps roles with the Burras to take on Dimboola the following week before enjoying free points from a bye in the last game.

Kade Petering has been shining for the Burras and Brayden Ison was good last week while Declan Foott, Jayden Beaumont and Karl Campbell impressed.

Hunters

The scenario basically means that the action is going to be red-hot at Dimboola and Horsham City this weekend.

The Roos tend to hunt in packs and often rely on forcing turnovers through the middle and at half forward to create opportunities for intune forwards.

It also means that the chances of Horsham and Dimboola being confronted with their most intense games for the season are high.

Ryan Bell and Braithwaites Oliver and Elliot and Hamish Exell provide critical hustle on the deck and Daniel Baker often sets up sorties on the defensive side of play and occasionally pushes forward to kick goals. Ash Clugston and Lachie Exell are always dangerous in the forward arc.

All teams had to endure tough damp conditions last week and this Saturday’s results might come down to which of the leading outfits emerged with the least injury and fatigue concerns.

Clinches History in Wimmera footy suggests the grinding nature of the wet-weather game can leave players sore or with minor injuries. This can invariably take the sting out of some players the following week. The Saints don’t seem to mind the wintry conditions, as a 13-plus goal win over Nhill suggested last week, while Horsham predictably had to work hard to beat Ararat at Ararat. The Saints have a reputation for being good in the clinches with Garry Hallam hitting form in the run home,

STAR SAINT: Garry Hallam has been finding form at the right time of the season. Picture: WILLAMY IMAGES

Phil Butsch always in the mix and Gavin Kelm using his balance to kick goals in all conditions. Clever Pat Knott impressed last week, as did Alex McRae, and wildcard Jacob Cooke-Harrison must continue his form against quality opposition. A dry ball might spell doom for the Saints with Horsham’s smash, grab

and run game impressing fans every week and the defensive dash of Tyler Blake a major trump. The Demons obviously did enough to win last week, Nick Pekin and Garrett Liston attracting accolades and coach Jordyn Burke and Jeremy Hartigan also featuring. At Dimboola, Minyip-Murtoa is going to have work overtime on its im-

Karter to compete for Melbourne titles Wimmera Kart Club drivers Remo Luciani, Ashley Lear and youngster Brayden Souter will compete in City of Melbourne kart titles this weekend.

Blandthorn wins again

Koenig won a 100-kilometre race from Birchip, his entry finishing ahead of 542 birds. He won from R. and J. Williamson and Rob Nelson.

Brayden is sitting in the top three in his class in a country karting series and will step up to junior class next year. Ashley from Mitre near Natimuk has been racing karts for nine years and last year qualified fourth and finished eight in the final. He is aiming for a top-five finish this year.

The Mildura victory continued a hot streak for Murtoa-based Blandthorn, winning a 100-kilometre race from Birchip and a race from Ouyen in the past three weeks.

His standout results this year has included a fourth placing in Victorian championships.

P: (03) 5382 2366

If results go as expected in the last three rounds the Eagles might prove the darkhorse for the double chance and sneak under the guard of both the Burras and the Saints at line.

Blandthorn won a 280-kilometre race from Mildura from 17 flyers who entered 446 birds. He won from Graham Elbourne and Kevin King.

The Melbourne titles will feature some of the best go-kart racers in Australia.

WORKSHOP SUPPLIES 29 WILSON ST. HORSHAM

A game between Nhill and Ararat at Nhill will be all about bragging honours and should be a good contest while fifth-placed Warrack Eagles will want to use a clash with Horsham RSL Diggers to stay on pace.

Birds released by Ernie Blandthorn and Bruce Koenig have won the latest Horsham Homing Club races.

Multiple title winner and Horsham kart manufacturer Remo Luciani of Horsham will compete in clubman heavy class, Lear in a Tag 125 section and Souter in rookies.

Luciani will be racing a new M3 Monaco kart.

This weekend other games tend to pale into insignificance in comparison with the contests at Dimboola and Horsham.

New look for punchy Ford Fiesta F

ord Australia has released full pricing and specifications for its new-look, mid-life Fiesta upgrade one month out from local launch.

The base Ambiente will also come with seven airbags, a leather steering wheel, cruise control, all-round electric windows, a six-speaker sound system, a trip computer and an EcoMode system that coaches the driver into being more economical.

Along with the revised frontal styling, the MY14 upgrade adds Sync connectivity to all model grades, plus a pair of new petrol engines, including the lauded EcoBoost 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol which effectively replaces the discontinued 1.6 diesel option.

In addition, the Trend will get fog lights and 15-inch alloy wheels. The Sport – with the EcoBoost engine, it promises to be a sprightly warm hatch under the ST – adds 16-inch alloys, front and rear spoilers and special badging.

As expected, Ford has also dropped the old Fiesta nomenclature – base CL, mid-range LX and flagship Zetec – and will instead label the different variants Ambiente, Trend and Sport.

The Sport also gets partial-leather sports seats inside and a Sony Audio system with eight speakers and a 4.2inch colour TFT screen.

Hot hatch

Executive

Also new to the range will be the German-made, 132kW/240Nm – growing to 147kW and 290Nm with the overboost function engaged – three-door ST hot hatch.

TWEAKED: Ford will launch the Fiesta update in September.

The facelift also comes at the cost of small price increases across the board, however. The entry Ambiente will hit showrooms from $15,825 plus on-road costs – up $335, while both the Trend and Sport climb an almost negligible $35 to $17,825 and $20,535 respectively.

the $27,990 Volkswagen Polo GTI.

Ford will withhold ST pricing until closer to launch, but expect something in the high-$20s, in-line with

This engine is available as standard with a five-speed manual gearbox – with a hill-holder to stop rollback, but

Both the Ambiente and Trend feature a new-to-the-range 82kW/140Nm 1.5-litre engine that produces less power than the outgoing 88kW 1.6-litre petrol, but also cuts fuel economy from 6.1 litres per 100km to 5.8L/100km.

a six-speed dual-clutch PowerShift automatic is a $2000 option. The claimed figure is the same for both. The Sport, meantime, gets the 92kW/170Nm turbo triple that has won two consecutive International Engine of the Year titles. Ford will offer a five-speed manual as standard, but will again offer the $2000 optional PowerShift. Interestingly, Ford Australia’s other

imminent application of the 1.0-litre engine, the EcoSport SUV, will be manual-only. This discrepancy may be because Ford sources Fiesta from Thailand and EcoSport from India. For the first time, Ford’s widelyused Sync hands-free connectivity system will feature on all Fiestas. This system incorporates Bluetooth streaming, USB connection and steering wheel controls.

A $1000 Executive pack on this variant adds climate control, rear parking sensors, automatic wipers and headlights, an alarm and keyless entry with push-button start. Fiesta sales are down 11.7 percent this year with 4780 units, in a lightcar segment that has essentially tread water. It has been outsold by key rivals including Mazda2, Toyota Yaris, Holden Barina, Hyundai i20, Kia Rio, Mitsubishi Mirage and Suzuki Swift. Mike Costello © GoAutoMedia, 2013

Fiat’s home run F

iat’s decision to relaunch the retro 500 city-car with a $14,000 drive-away entry price is paying dividends after it recorded its best ever Australian sales result since its 2008 launch. Fewer than two months from the re-launch, Fiat’s Australian factory importer has sold out two Italian shipments of the re-born Bambino. Last month, it sold 182 units in Australia, a 304 percent increase over the same month last year. Overall sales for the first six months of 2013 were up by 252 percent with 518 units shifted. The boom comes after Fiat’s range reshuffle that included the introduction of a new entry-level 1.2-litre Pop variant from $14k drive-away – effectively more than $6000 cheaper than before – plus a more powerful new $16,900 Sport variant and a limitedrun $23,200 Gucci edition. Fiat reduced prices of other variants including the 0.9-litre two-cylinder TwinAir models in February this year, with the cabriolet version benefit-

ing from a $5290 price cut for a new $22,700 price. Fiat Chrysler Group director of corporate affairs Karla Leach said despite the increased demand for the 500, any waiting lists would be kept under control. “The pipeline is full and there are lots of little Fiat 500s coming on their way out from Italy as we speak,” she said. Ms Leach said some buyers may face a wait for their 500 in the coming months, but predicted it would not blow out beyond a month. “There might be a small wait, but with most cars these days it’s quite rare you can buy one straight off the lot

anyway so it’s a fairly palatable one, its not months and months because we have regular shipments coming through. Probably a couple of weeks, maybe three or four tops.” While Ms Leach would not discuss ongoing sales targets for the 500, she said a trend would be more evident when July sales results are released in early August. Meanwhile, Fiat’s LCV range has also seen a sharp increase in sales, with Fiat shifting 494 Ducato vans in the first six months of the year, a 74 percent increase over the same period last year. tomer favourite colour in the WRX palette, so it’s entirely fitting that this last-in-line special edition of the current car carries the famous blue and gold combination.

The company claims all 300 come with more than $7000 worth of extras, including partial-suede Recaro seats, STI front and rear spoilers, a short-shifter, flexible ‘tower’ strut brace, special decals and numbered badges.

“WRX has always been a winner for customers in the retained value stakes and the special editions in particular give it even more cache, so with only 300 of these available, we anticipate high demand.”

The back-to-basics aesthetic is reminiscent of the car that has won six WRC titles, as well as 10 consecutive Australian Rally Championships. It’s now 20 years since the first WRX premiered in Japan.

“This feature-packed special edition makes a direct visual link to the original World Rally Blue WRXs that did so much to grow Subaru’s performance credentials globally,” Subaru Australia managing director Nick Senior said.

The replacement for the current six-year-old WRX was previewed in concept form at the New York Motor show in March this year, and featured in a travelling dealer roadshow Down Under last month.

The curtains are poised to close on the current-shape Subaru WRX, with a new generation due here by March 2014, but one final special edition will hit our shores before they do.

Due in Subaru Australia the month, the 195kW/343Nm WRX RS40 harkens to the car’s World Rally Championship glory days with its signature blue paint and gold-coloured 17-inch wheel combination.

onda has cut prices across its longestserving petrol-electric hybrid models, knocking $2000 off its Civic Hybrid and a more generous $3000 off the Insight.

The price cut includes a significant equipment upgrade for the petrol-electric Civic, including satellite navigation with live traffic updates, a DVD player, reversing camera, keyless entry and start, and lights for the vanity mirrors. It also gets a cosmetic update, with daytime running lights added to the front. The Civic Hybrid’s price drops by $2000 to start from a Toyota Prius-matching $33,990 before on-road costs, although as Honda points out, this is with flat paint rather than the optional metallic skin. The Insight just drops in price with no extra equipment thrown in. It now starts from $26,990 for the VTi, or $30,490 for the more upmarket VTi-L version that adds satellite navigation, a reversing camera and slightly larger 16-inch alloy wheels among other features.

SENSE OF PLACE: Honda is adding satellite navigation as standard kit to the Civic Hybrid.

However, unlike the Prius, both the Civic Hybrid and Insight are not able to travel under electric power alone, with the electric motor only providing support to the petrol engine. Honda Insight sales have all but dried up this year, selling only 33 cars over the last six months compared with almost 150 for the same time last year. Sales of the CR-Z sports coupe – the first hybrid car sold in Australia to feature a manual gearbox – have plummeted almost 80 percent compared with last year despite a mid-life makeover.

The Honda Civic’s price and extra equipment, meanwhile, now either match or better that of

According to Honda, the Insight’s price has been ‘repositioned’, and it now sits close in price to other small diesel-engined hatchbacks including Mazda’s strong-selling 3 and the Holden Cruze.

The concept is a stylistic evolution of the boxy XA Alpha micro off-roader concept shown in Delhi at the start of 2012. Little else is known, but the iV-4 is expected to point to a replacement for the small and rugged Jimny, one of the few ‘proper’ all-terrain machines in the segment.
