Centre backers urge city to move quickly

By DEAN LAWSON

C

ampaigners for a new indoor sports centre in Horsham have urged city leaders to move ‘quickly and decisively’ if a municipal study confirms justification for the project.

Horsham Table Tennis Association president Jeff Pekin, anxiously awaiting findings of a municipal sport and recreation strategy review, said it had long been clear that Horsham needed a multi-purpose venue.

PATCHEWOLLOCK

He said while it was critical to have an official strategy in place completion of the review process would represent ‘a time to act’. “This will be the third recreation strategy review we’ve had in Horsham. We previously had one in 1995 and another 2006 and it has always been clear that there is a primary need for an indoor sport and community centre that looks after the needs of a variety of users,” he said. “We can keep pondering over the concept as much as we like but until we come up with a firm plan of action and start to act on the plan we have no choice but to keep making a noise about it. “As a community and a council we will have to make a decision. Everyone I talk to agrees that this is what we need in Horsham. But with all the good ideas and support in principle, until there is confirmation a process will actually start, the project remains in limbo. “If we can get first get a commitment and then at least start on something we will be

happy. “What we want is a centrally located centre that is accessible and available to as many people and sporting organisations as possible. They key however, is that it all moves quickly beyond ideas to a bricks and mortar stage.”

Priorities Horsham Rural City Council planning and economic director Tony Bawden confirmed earlier this year that the concept would feature prominently in the review. He said at the time that an independent community review

group had been busy researching the pros and cons of an indoor centre with consultant Philip Gray and Association. He added that the council would wait until completion of the review to establish sport and recreation priorities for Horsham. Technical services director John Martin, also heavily involved in the process, said the latest expectation was to have a final review draft in August. “There will then be a process of the council putting it out for public comment and yes one of the key aspects of the study will be the development of a

sport and recreation centre,” he said. “Of course what also needs to be recognised is that there needs to be work to identify funding opportunities.”

Ararat mechanic YOUR HEATING Solution takes world title Wood Heaters

Wednesday, July 10, 2013

A

rarat has a new world champion with mechanic Tim Taylor, 21, winning gold at a major skills-based competition in Germany.

Australia’s most efficient woodfire average efficiency 79%

Taylor, representing Team Australia Skillaroos and up against some of the best young mechanics from around the globe, worked through intense pressure to win the 42nd WorldSkills International Competition’s automobile technology section.

from $2650 Space Heaters

The Ararat Automotive and Agricultural Services employee won from 34 competitors and accepted his medal during a glittering medal ceremony earlier this week. The automotive competitors had to work on six threehour modules that involved everything from engine and transmission rebuilds to engine-management and body electrical systems. They had four days to hunt down, assess and repair ‘planted’ faults in Volkswagen car systems specifically built and prepared for the competition. His father Anthony, who heard the results in the early hours of Monday morning, said he was still coming to grips with the news, “It’s pretty much the trade equivalent of the Olympics. It only happens every two years and there was only 32 in the Australian team. It an amazing achievement,” he said.

“We can’t wait for him to come home now and it will be interesting to see if we can get the smile off his face.”

Champion Taylor was the only Australian to win a gold medal at the titles and as well as his win, also made a select champions of nations group. The accolade reflected his achievement in having the fourth highest score across all trade disciplines. Ararat Automotive and Agricultural Services joint owner Kerry Hammond said the re-

sult was well deserved. “We’re really happy and excited for him. It’s great that he has been able to achieve his goal and we support him all the way. We obviously miss him because he is so good in the workshop but it is a great achievement,” she said. Taylor, who has a Certification III in Automotive Mechanical Technology from the University of Ballarat, TAFE, poured months of preparation into the titles and will return home after a three-week travelling holiday.

Bridge works continue Improved pedestrian and bicycle facilities on the Wimmera River bridges in Horsham are a step closer after the start of footway widening works. VicRoads regional Director Ewen Nevett said the work involved widening bridge footways from 1.5 metres to 3.1 metres as part of the $4.26-million upgrade.

“Installing bridge barriers between motorists and the footway will improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists.”

“Changed traffic conditions include one-lane traffic in each direction on the west bridge and speed limit of 40kmh. “Delays are expected and drivers are urged to plan their trips in advance and leave early, especially during morning peak periods.” Mr Nevett said VicRoads would maintain pedestrian access across the river at all times

“The machine will be involved in the same process on the west bridge in mid July before barriers and concrete deck overlay are constructed.

“The east bridge is closed for pile-driving works. Melbourne-bound traffic has been moved to the west bridge via crossover points,” he said.

“A machine rigged to a crane totalling 55 tonnes has started driving piles into the ground and riverbed beside the east bridge. The piles will provide foundation support for the widened footway,” he said.

Mr Nevett said contractors would return to the east bridge to complete footway widening and bridge works.

Insurance: necessary evil – or simply evil? even policy fine print, it can leave people with a sense of relief or devastation.

nsurance! Mention the word among friends and it tends to prompt a variety of responses. Insurance schemes and policies seem to provide some people with a degree of confidence and comfort. Yet others perceive it as a necessary evil or simply an evil. In the broad spectrum of financial circumstance, insurance can mean everything from safeguard to struggle. It can range from being a simple financial inconvenience to something that can cripple the weekly household budget. Depending on income or

Giving away hard-earned money you can’t afford to give away to cover something that might or might not happen tends to rub abrasively against sensibility. Buying insurance to cover hard-earned property and assets and having a system in place that covers health and family security of course makes sense. But, in a country where we supposedly promote a fair go for all, the truth is that being able or unable to pay for insurance can lead to a divisive society of haves and have-nots. The glaring example is health care. In Australia, we

have two health systems running parallel – the private, based on insurance cover, and the public, paid for by our taxes. One supposedly provides quicker and better services, allowing patients to not only recover but to enjoy fulfilling activity or lives. The other, in some cases, simply allows the patient, perhaps after a long wait, to recover and simply survive. Yet the systems seem to curiously overlap, depending on circumstance.

Services Many of us know that some medical specialists refuse to offer their services to patients who don’t have private health cover. But it might come as a sur-

prise that some country football clubs, regardless of an AFL Victoria Country cover scheme, refuse to sign players who don’t have private health cover. Why? Because they know the private health system responds better and quicker to health issues associated with people playing sport. There seems to be misunderstanding about relative wealth in this country. A health-insurance cost of $20 a week for high-quality cover for a young person might seem insignificant to some. For others, it might represent a financial nightmare. Forgive the oversimplification, for a clever country, this all seems rather wonky let alone unfair.

One scheme. One focus on individuals. One commitment to lifelong support. From 1 July, Australia’s current support system for people living with disability is being progressively replaced with DisabilityCare Australia. This new scheme will help provide a better quality of life for Australians with a significant and permanent disability, and for their families and carers too.

What’s new about DisabilityCare Australia? DisabilityCare Australia is a new way of funding personalised support for people with disability. As well as looking at a person’s immediate needs, it will take a lifelong approach and enable people with disability to have choice and control over their supports. It will focus on early intervention, recognising that timely support can minimise the impact of a disability on individuals, families and carers. Assistance will be provided at the right time, rather than only once people reach crisis.

Who is eligible? DisabilityCare Australia will help people who have a significant and permanent disability and who need assistance with everyday activities. This includes people whose disabilities are attributed to intellectual, cognitive, neurological, sensory, or physical impairment, or a psychiatric condition.

Will I lose my current support? No. Your current arrangements will stay in place until you have met DisabilityCare Australia to discuss your needs.

Will it affect my Disability Support Pension? No. Your Disability Support Pension will not be affected.

When does it all begin? DisabilityCare Australia is being rolled out in stages because it is a big change to the current system. Minister to open Ford exhibition V

ictorian Arts and Women’s Affairs Minister Heidi Victoria will address guests at the opening of a Sue Ford Time Machine exhibition in Horsham on Friday.

Ms Victoria will open the Monash Gallery of Art touring presentation at 6.30pm at Horsham Regional Art Gallery’s temporary site at Jubilee Hall. The exhibition, which explores the early work of Ford, continues until August 18. Ford was one of Australia’s most prominent photographers and filmmakers. She studied photography at RMIT and in 1974 was the first Australian photographer to have a solo exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria. Ford’s 1960s-70s Time series, a part of the Horsham exhibition, represents is one of the key moments in late modernist Australian photography. Through this work Ford demonstrates the camera’s capacity to record the passing of time and illustrates her close working and personal relationships with her subjects. Before her death in 2009 Ford was working with Monash Gallery of Art on an exhibition of her work, Time Machine. The project, involving Ford’s earliest photographic images, charts her interest in recording the lives, struggles and dreams of her peers and young women in 1960s early 1970s Melbourne. Art critics claim this focus on women and their daily lives allowed photography to simultaneously become a vehicle of self-expression and political activism. Art historian and photography curator Helen Ennis, in describing Ford’s approach to art, wrote: “She does not cultivate a mysterious artistic persona. “Ford’s art practice is purposeful; it is the outcome of her view of art as a political activity that is democratic, liberating and relevant to contemporary society.”

Service merger becomes official

A

merger between Ararat and Stawell district support groups for people with disabilities is complete with the new organisation now officially called Pinnacle Inc. The voluntary merger between Ararat’s McGregor Community and Stawell Intertwine services became official from July 1. The merger occurred to meet increased competition in the industry, to have greater access to funding and a need to provide more flexible services and service options for clients.

Pinnacle chief executive Brian Burke said both organisations had a good working relationship and a history of working together to achieve success. “By adhering to the Victorian State Plan and Charter of Human Rights, we strive to empower those with a disability and support them in the least restrictive way with the intent of creating sustainable outcomes within the community,” he said. “It is the agency’s intent to have an environment for people with disabilities which allow them to take advantage

Trout turn on at Toolondo Toolondo Reservoir in the southern Wimmera continues to hint at a return to its glory days as one of the best trout-fishing waters in Victoria. The Reservoir, holding enough water to support a large fish population, is providing visiting anglers with a bonanza of trout catches. In one circumstance, a Melbourne angler staying with Toolondo district’s Charlie Officer, caught several brown and one rainbow trout, the heaviest weighing about 2.72 kilograms, or six pounds Imperial, and another two around the 2.25kg mark. Regular Toolondo anglers have reported that the lake is probably no more than 3.6 metres at its deepest and weed had made it all but impossible for boating anglers to troll for fish. They said the anonymous Melbourne angler caught his trout fishing deeper ‘holes’ using mudeye bait under a bubble float. Toolondo Reservoir, part of natural and historic swampland, has historically been subject to extensive fish-release programs. It receives water allocations through GWMWater supply arrangements.

Reduced speed limit at Kaniva A 10-kilometre speed limit on Kaniva railway overpass on the Western Highway will remain in place until later this week. VicRoads has advised motorists that the speed limit will be in place during a concrete-curing process. Works on the $2.58-million upgrade are well underway and the pouring of a concrete deck and subsequent curing are critical steps.

Works were scheduled to start last Friday and VicRoads applied the speed limit to minimise stress to achieve the required strength and hardness in the deck.

Temporary traffic signals, warning signs, reduced speed limits and electronic message boards are in place. The bridge strengthening and barrier upgrade will increase the load capacity of the overpass and improve motorist safety.

of a wider range of quality support options and programs to enhance personal development and growth. “As a larger organisation, the agency will strengthen alliances and have a coordinated approach to the delivery of quality services.”

Certainty Mr Burke said the efficiency and effectiveness of a larger regional organisation would improve economy of scale, allow for improved individualised client responses and provide long-term certainty. He said a larger organisation

would be more competitive in attracting government funding and business opportunities and in a stronger position to take advantage of ‘imminent’ sector changes, such as the introduction of DisabilityCare Australia. “In the meantime our clients continue to benefit from participation in programs in the Communications Technology Centre in Ararat,” he said. “Several clients have been assessed and specific communication aids have been purchased to enable improved access to the technology. “We will continue to access

assistive technologies and implementing learning programs to enable even greater benefits for clients. “The merger means a significant number of additional clients will benefit from using the facility. This would not have been possible without the support of ACE Radio Broadcasters.” Mr Burke said the large amount of work required to implement the merger had delayed an official opening of the Communications Technology Centre. “However, we are now in a position to open the centre

shortly and publicly thank and acknowledge our generous sponsors and donors.”

Board members Kathryn Clayton is Pinnacle client services director and voluntary board members are: Robyn Anyon, Peter Brennan, treasurer, Rosalind Byas, Ian Foster, president, Warren Groves, Brendan Holland, John McDougall, secretary. Staff members of of the two previous organisations also transferred to Pinnacle on July 1, maintaining all services under the new banner.

Living with betrayals of all shapes, guises party any better.

“I know you feel betrayed.”

Amorphous in nature, betrayals are not easy to be divined. We have indeed come a long way from the biblical kiss of betrayal. A broken promise, a selfish agenda, a hasty judgment and even silence; betrayals do come in all shapes and guises, sprung upon on unsuspecting souls.

“Well, yes, that is one of the unpleasant side effects of betrayal.” – from Buffy the Vampire Slayer By SUJATHA UMAKANTHAN

W

hen I was a kid my dad used to push me into mono-acting competitions at school, sometimes literally.

I remember hovering near the doors refusing to enter the stage. It wasn’t stage fright that had me petrified but the fear of being booed by the crowd while I stood there spouting Shakespeare. My dad’s fascination with the great bard used to land me in hot water all the time. It was hard enough playing a single role in such classical plays, but try alternating between different characters; I always ended up emptying the rooms pretty quickly. There was always a stupefied silence that greeted me at the end of my mono-acts and it had very little to do with my thespian skills. It was usually siesta time to the remaining members thanks to my dad and Shakespeare. I seem to be getting off the tangent here, my post has very little to do with my mono-acting skills or Shakespeare, except that it was here that I learnt to memorise the famous words of Caesar when he confronted Brutus. “Et tu, Brute?” has become synonymous with every betrayal out there. Why talk about betrayals at all? Look around the

So here comes my question, does one ever get used or numbed to the sting of betrayal? Sujatha Umakanthan

world and you would see its seal stamped on every aspect of life – with friendships and relationships bearing the worst brunt. No arena is exempt from this sneaky intruder – religion, politics, work or social life. Little does one realise that life is nothing but a sequence of mono-acting sessions where you get to play different characters with passing of time and emotions. Perhaps we all get to play Caesar and Brutus in real life. Victims or perpetrators of betrayals at one time or the other; no doubt one doesn’t reach my age without going through a few of them. I am no exception to these as well; as the years sped by relieving me of my naivety and innocence, I grew accustomed to betrayals, even learnt to dole out a few. Mind you they were more unintentional or perhaps opportunistic than premeditated; not that they mitigated the guilt or remorse any less or mollified the wronged

The hapless victim gets ensnared in a web of deceit and falsehood or unmet expectations, with the only exit doors marked ‘betrayal’ leading to a dark world of bitterness and ultimate disillusionment. And just when one would have found the strength to crawl back in the world of living, bingo, another betrayal! Well, who are we after all to complain about betrayals in today’s world of fragile and ever-shifting affiliations and priorities? The Lord Himself was not exempt from this affliction and I am not referring just to Judas here. Despite theologists rendering different interpretations to the words of Jesus on the Crucifix “Oh God, Oh God, why has thou forsaken me?” the feelings of abandonment and disillusionment that He experienced during His last hours have set a precedent for most mortals on this earth. But yet we learn to continue on this life’s journey to where it takes us, definitely more jaded, more wary but undoubtedly a lot wiser. Happy trails.

Rainbow full of happy campers T

he principal of a southern Mallee school has spoken about the benefits of a police camp designed to foster values such as respect and teamwork in young people. Rainbow Secondary College principal Robyn Bellinger said a Victorian Police High Challenge Camp involving 21 Rainbow and Hopetoun yeareight students earlier this year had been outstanding. She said she was so impressed with the exercise that she would continue foster a relationship with the police program and encourage students to be involved. “It was the most worthwhile camp I have ever been on in my 36 years of being in the teaching service,” she said. The May camp involved students travelling by Victoria Police coach to Douglas Donald Recreation Camp at the foot of Mt Donna Buang. Victoria Police organises the

camps to build positive relationships between secondary students and police officers across Victoria. They are designed to promote role models and values and build confidence and trust. “Senior Constable Craig Farrell co-ordinated the camp ably supported by four other police officers,” Ms Bellinger said. “Over the week each student was challenged to go outside his or her comfort zone and meet increasingly more complex mental and physical tasks.”

Three areas Rainbow Secondary College student Georgia Gelligen said the camp centred on three main areas – teamwork, respect and challenges. “They made us do small activities that involved challenging ourselves and having to work as a team, which linked to having respect for each other,” she said.

“Activities such as lowropes course, the helium stick which involved having to interact with the other people in your group, Operation Chaos which was a game where you had to use a lot of organisation, patience and teamwork, and much more all built us up for the biggest challenge of all – high ropes and the flying fox. “The flying fox didn’t require much teamwork except for encouragement. But in the high ropes the person who was doing the activity had someone else from the group holding their rope, which kept them stable a few metres off the ground. The activities before the high-ropes course definitely built us up for the bigger challenges.

rowlands Film Society will present the 1934 Frank Capra film It Happened One Night at Crowlands Hall on Saturday.

ONE NIGHT IN CROWLANDS: Screen legends Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert on the movie poster for Frank Capra’s 1934 classic film It Happened One Night, screening at Crowlands Hall on Saturday.

The society, formed in 2004 as a non-profit cultural organisation, will a screen the multi-award-winning movie at 5.40pm. Coordinator Bryan Putt said the society prided itself on showing films in an atmosphere reminiscent of the 1950s. He said supper followed all screenings and there was always an opportunity for discussion about the film. “Members are asked to rate the films in a ‘David and Margaret’ five-star, rating system. Often a short will precede the feature. It’s not uncommon for patrons to stay on talking about the movie for over an hour,” he said. “Many folk travel large distances to attend and a prize is frequently awarded to the best dressed. “Screenings are for members only but a half-year subscription is just $6.” Mr Putt said the society was always working on improving

clear.

“This time the film will be on the giant new screen raised for better sight lines and utilising a xenon, lamp projector for a brighter, whiter image. There is also a five-speaker surround-sound system,” he said.

“Directed by Frank Capra and starring Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert, it is the legendary romantic comedy, which has not aged a bit. It was the first film to win all five major Oscars – picture, actor, actress, director and screenplay.”

“The most amazing thing about this film is that it was made 79 years ago. However, we have secured a brand new print struck from the original negative, making the viewing experience fresh and crystal

Northern rivalry reignites the Roos will need better performances from their less experienced players if they are going to do damage in finals. Ben Fisher, Luke Nathan and David Piansante leads the way through the midfield for the Roos while Wade Champion always provides a strong target up forward. Relton Roberts found good form for Ouyen United last week and will need to keep this up for the Demons to win. Kale Barker is another who has had a good season for the Demons, while Damian Cupido is dangerous up forward given enough opportunities. The speed of both teams should ensure a fast paced game, but the Roos will prove to be too good and will win by 24 points.

MALLEE FOOTBALL LEAGUE

H

By MICK SHANNON

opetoun has broken through for its first win of the season with a determined 12-point victory over Jeparit-Rainbow.

The Devils fought back from 15 points down at three-quarter time to keep the Lakers scoreless in the final term. In other matches last weekend, second-placed Sea Lake-Nandaly Tigers took down third-placed Walpeup-Underbool by 29 points while Beulah easily accounted for an undermanned Ouyen United side. This week’s action features a rivalry round which is sure to produce tough games of football. Beulah will look to keep its winning streak going when it takes on Hopetoun at Beulah. Hopetoun will be pumped up after its first win of the season but will be up against the top team which has produced terrific performances during the last three weeks. Hopetoun will need everyone to produce their best footy if its is going to be any chance of defeating Beulah on its home turf. Deek Roberts produced his best game for the season so far for the Devils last week, kicking seven goals and will need to replicate this form to give Hopetoun much needed firepower. The Blues will have too much class through the midfield though with Shaun Monohan, Tom Hallam and Ryan McKenzie taking control at the centre clearances. This will allow full forward David King to kick a bag after a successful return from injury last week. Zac Robins has been a shining light for Ho-

petoun this season, with his courage and skill across the half backline a big asset for the Devils. Robins will need big games from Scott Heath and Simon Cook in defence to stop Beulah piling on the goals. Although both teams sit at either ends of the ladder, this will still be a hard-fought game, which is always the way with these two fierce rivals. Beulah will have too much class and skill across every line though and win by 40 points.

Northern rivals Northern rivals Walpeup-Underbool and Ouyen United will battle at Underbool as the home-town Roos look to get back on the winners’ list after their five-goal loss to Sea Lake Nandaly Tigers. Ouyen United has be hurt by injury this season and it showed in their 77-point loss to Beulah. Walpeup-Underbool continually has the same six to seven players getting best each week, but

Feline feast Woomelang-Lascelles will be looking to work its way back into the top four when it comes up against Sea Lake-Nandaly Tigers at Woomelang. The Cats have produced exciting and quick footy this season, but failed to put it together for all four quarters. Corey Kelly, Jeremy Phelan and Rohan Coburn will all need to have big games for the Cats while Jayden Lonergan needs to produce a big game in front of goals. The Tigers are a skilful side that can move the ball quickly and have great targets up forward in Cliff Ryan and Simon Weekly. Tom Summerhayes and Colin Durie will be strong at the clearances, while Stephen Lyons will control the back half. This will be a close game, with WoomelangLascelles in desperate need for a win. Sea Lake Nandaly Tigers will manage to hold on though and will win by 10 points. Jeparit-Rainbow has the bye.

More metro success for O’Sullivans YOUR ONE STOP run. As the 12 metropolitan quality neddys started their runs, Koe was steadily making ground and after balancing for the run to the judge was looming ominously.

Leading Stawell trainers Terry and Karina O’Sullivan are having a season to remember. One horse that has flourished under the care of the father-daughter team in recent times is the chestnut mare Koe. Last Saturday at Flemington the fiveyear-old was out to complete a hat-trick of wins when she took her place in the Leilani series final over 1400 metres, carrying a prise purse of $100,000. With Adelaide jockey Matthew Neilson taking up the riding duties, Koe and the Darren Weir-trained Bia Diamond shared favouritism just before start time. Once the starting stalls flew open Neilson elected to restrain his mount towards the rear of the field also ensuring she had clear galloping room and a trouble-free

53 Main Street, Natimuk

Under aggressive riding the daughter of Align set out after the leading horses and came away over the final stages to outsprint second place getter Bia Diamond to score by a long neck at the famous finishing post. After completing the hat-trick of wins Koe’s stake earnings rocketed to almost $200,000 and her rich vein of form looks to continue over the winter period.

Dove does it for Dodson Telopea Downs resident trainer Darryl Dodson like the O’Sullivan team is also having an enjoyable season. One of Dodson’s many in-form equine pupils is up-and-coming mare Angel Dove. After an impressive victory at Penola, Darryl took his charge to the Heywood Cup meeting at Casterton last Sunday for a 1200-metre sprint. Four-time Horsham Cup winning jockey Holly McKechnie was again in the saddle to take the ride. After the starter released the 12 shortcourse specialists, Angel Dove was hunted hard out of the machines to take up a

prominent position sitting at the leader’s girth enjoying a charmed run throughout.

When the intensity of the race lifted the daughter of SA breeding stalwart Belvic looked to be cruising at the home turn. After entering the straight Angel Dove was given a couple of cracks and accelerated quickly, giving her rivals a galloping lesson to win by two-and-a-half lengths. On the strength of her latest win it would be no surprise to see this girl give a good account of herself in a Saturday class race in Adelaide in the future.

In brief Darryl Dodson had more success at Bordertown last week producing debutant galloper Checkout Chick for a nice win. Dean Yendall booted home Bonny Jeunesse at Echuca last Monday for Ballarat based trainer Anthony Cosgriff.

Grampians clash one of the best HORSHAM DISTRICT FOOTBALL LEAGUE

C

By GRANT KUCHEL

ameron Reserve at the foot of the picturesque Grampians plays host to one of Horsham District Football League’s matches of the year this weekend.

Last round’s vanquished Laharum welcomes injury-riddled third-place Edenhope-Apsley and the winner will clearly assume the mantle as the second-best side in the league.

appear to have more firepower, an advantage that will establish them as a main premiership challenger.

Kees firepower A regulation win should be the order of the day on the open plains of Kalkee as the host blows Taylors Lake away for the second time this season. Even without the hamstrung Josh Mibus controlling the back half the Kees boast too much firepower and force all across the ground for the Lakers. With Steve Schultz controlling the

Edenhope-Apsley will be hoping a plethora of injured players can return to the side. James Dixon returned last game and if Carl Obst, Will Smith and Charlie Stewart join the side we should be in for a ripping clash. Laharum boasts a tall forward line that can stretch opposition defences. Shannon Argall, Jason Przibilla, Ben Peucker and Rhys Bennett can all fill key posts and with Marcus Demaria spending time in the ruck, opposition sides are finding it tough to stop the quartet kicking goals. Jeremy Kealy will probably go to Argall, his brother Bernie might well go to one of the other key forwards and youngster Oscar McDonald will slot into centre half back. Both sides boast quality midfielders. Dave McLeish, Taylor Milner and Brent Christie lead the Saints’ charge against Laharum tough nut Robbie Miller, hard-working Daniel Easson and bullocking Zac Price. It will take a big effort for forwards James Dixon and Matt Cranage to pull off a big away win for Edenhope-Apsley because the Demons

centre, the biggest question will be how many goals red headed Josh Beddison and mercurial Adam Carter can kick.

Taylors Lake will look to their usual cohorts to try and stem the tide. Aaron Lewis, Sam Rintoule, Craig Britten and Jason Weir will battle valiantly in the midfield while Luke Robertson will try to hold together a backline that will be under siege. Jake Hobbs has been giving first use of the ball to his Kalkee small men out of the middle and Jason Kannar will need to work overtime to stop the young ruckman from giving his on ballers an arm-chair ride. One wouldn’t expect the margin to be as big as the opening time they met but Kalkee should have an easy day at the office and record an easy win.

Rams and Roos Natimuk plays host to fellow final aspirant Harrow-Balmoral and both sides need to keep winning to keep their names at the forefront of finals talk. The loser will find it hard to get to finals action, especially if other results go against them. Natimuk’s forward line is versatile. Tim Friend can play at either end and he may be required to play on big Roo forward Brent Penny rather than sit up forward for the Rams while the addition of Mark Dorward has given the Rams depth. Harrow-Balmoral will hope Tim Cogger and Josh Vickery both front this week. The key playmakers add class and leadership to the young Roos outfit and take pressure off the likes of Brent Forsyth and Michael

Phelan. Natimuk will attempt to work the Roos over through the middle of the ground through the likes of Ash and Jeremy Pekin, John Hornsby and Dylan Wright. Harrow-Balmoral will look to Dave Vickery, Daniel Van Someron and Ryan McClure to provide scoreboard pressure and keep the Roos snapping at the heels of the occupier of fifth position.

Competition set to sizzle in fight for top five MININERA DISTRICT FOOTBALL LEAGUE By JONATHAN BOX

With only six rounds left in Mininera and District Football League’s 2013 season, competition is set to sizzle with all top five places up for grabs. SMW Rovers, after dropping out of the five, will this week take on Hawkesdale-Macarthur. SMW Rovers have had a disappointing last month, losing four games in a row and dropping from third to six on the ladder. Their most recent of losses came at the hands of Tatyoon. It was a close game all the way with Rovers going into the final quarter with an eight-point lead. But they could not hold off Tatyoon, which finished off the game as sixpoint victors.

Tom Madden was the only multiple goal kicker from SMW Rovers’ nine goal scorers, reflecting how tough the Tatyoon backline was to get around. Captain Nicholas Byrne was named best on ground for his skill and presence in the midfield, while Billie Leskosek and Matthew Mulcahy were among the Bulldogs’ best.

With fifth spot still up for grabs the Bulldogs will need a win this weekend because there are four teams all vying for the position. One of these is Hawkesdale-Macarthur which sits seventh. The Eagles, who have won five games and had one draw, will be hoping they hit their straps at the right end of the season. The first time they met this season Hawkesdale-Macarthur defeated Rovers with dominant performances from midfielder Murray Habel and forward Xavier McCartney. With this in mind and with HawkesdaleMacarthur being on a roll after last week’s win

against Ararat, they will be looking to Danny Chatfield to capitalise in front of goal and to add to his impressive nine from last week.

McCartney and Habel found themselves in the best and will be looking for a duplicate game to round two.

District rivals Tatyoon takes on Wickliffe-Lake Bolac. Tatyoon found itself struggling at the start of the season but has fought its way back and now sits in the top five. Tatyoon held on strongly last week to defeat SMW Rovers with forward Aidan Bell instrumental with five goals while Andrew Laidlaw and Anthony Brady provided a dominating performance around the ground. Midfielders Timothy and Sean McDougall were also prominent for the Hawks and their constant pressure picked apart the Bulldogs’ defence.

They will all be hoping to take this momentum into Saturday’s game and to capitalise on a down Wickliffe-Lake Bolac which is coming off its first loss of the season, to MoystonWillaura by three points. The Magpies trailed at every change and scored more goals than the Pumas but MoystonWillaura’s 17 behinds proved the difference. Forward William Archer and coach Nicholas Willox both kicked three goals for the Magpies and with the help of Michael Otto and Dean McInnes they will be determined to turn their misfortune around and get back on the winners’ list. In other games this round, Lismore-Derrinallum hosts Glenthompson-Dunkeld, Great Western will play Caramut, Ararat travels to Woorndoo to play Woorndoo-Mortlake and Moyston-Willaura will be looking to continue its winning way and secure top spot when it takes on Penshurst.

Finals double chance beckons WIMMERA FOOTBALL LEAGUE

J

By DEAN LAWSON

ust how important is the finals double chance in Wimmera Football League this season? Very! Okay, but does it really matter who finishes third on the ladder and manages to secure that extra game in the finals? You bet it does! Especially this year when for the first time in a decade there is a legitimate opportunity for a third-party spoiler to sneak in and upset the apple cart. A quick glance at the ladder reveals a battle of numbers unfolding between third-placed Horsham Saints and fourth-placed Minyip-Murtoa. Both are on equal points with the Saints holding sway by percentage. Expectations are that Minyip-Murtoa, fresh from a win over the Saints and a bye last week, will beat Ararat in Ararat on Saturday. If the game goes as scripted it will place a large and bright spotlight on how Saints perform against Warrack Eagles. Warrack Eagles sit fifth and a dramatic draw with a threatening sixplaced Nhill last week might have have been enough to ultimately secure them in the top-five finish. But the result has thrown a spanner in Eagles plans to press for third spot and sitting a game and a half off the double-chance pace at this stage of the season might frustrate the Yarriambiack crew until deep into August. What it all means is that a win at Warracknabeal’s Anzac Park on Saturday is must for both the Saints and Eagles. While the Eagles backed up a spirit-

ed effort against Horsham with a slog at Davis Park, the Saints responded to significant disappointment against Minyip-Murtoa with a crushing victory over Horsham RSL in the wet. Wily and balanced veteran Gavin Kelm, one of the hardest players in the competition to match up in the wet, bagged 11 goals and predictably other close-in players such Dennis Adams, Phil Butsch and Nathan Clough enjoyed the conditions. Big Michael Rowe was also prominent. The Eagles will want a dry ball to allow them the space they enjoy. As a key-position forward or defender, Peter Weir is a trump and last week ‘chip-off’ Liam Stewart, Jason Hinkley, Leigh Dovaston and Jacob Cheney were good in a tight struggle. If it rains again, the Saints will win and gain further breathing space. But a fine day and a home-ground advantage will give the Eagles an edge.

Two points instead of four last week would have been far from what Nhill wanted either and now the Tigers have to front up against a rebounding Dimboola. Nhill’s run home appears far from easy, taking on the Roos this Saturday, Stawell the following week and then Horsham and Horsham Saints. The Tigers might have to simply be content to throw their cards in the air, see how they fall and be content with being the team capable of having a say in the make-up of the finals. But stranger things have happened in footy. Nhill doesn’t have the firepower to match the Roos this weekend. Dimboola, especially at home, will be on mission to regain the winning feeling after falling seven points short of beating Horsham.

Damp conditions allowed Al McKinnon to have an impact last week and adaptable Daniel Baker and big Justin Chilver were good. Dimboola will enjoy a greater opportunity to free up its forwards against the Tigers will simply have too much forward firepower for the visitors. Nathan Devanny, having an outstanding season, and the likes of big Will Oakley and Nathan Merrett will think differently. It remains to be seen what last week’s result between Horsham and Dimboola will mean in the final season wash-up. Both sides were missing key players.

Wimmera League trio Nick Pekin and Jordyn Burke from Horsham and Dimboola’s Ash Clugston kicked goals in AFL Vic Country Two’s one-point win over a Victorian Amateur Football Association B-D4 grade team.

Tim Wade from Horsham District League club Kalkee was named an emergency for the game at Albert Park’s Harry Trott Oval. The final result was AFL Victoria Country Two 14.16 (100) to VAFA B-D4 grades 15.9 (99). In the first-division clash between AFL Victoria ‘major leagues’ team and the VAFA ‘A’ team at St Kilda’s Junction Oval, the VAFA won by three points.

pressed onlookers while John Wood and Garrett Liston won accolades and Brad Hartigan led by example. The Stawell camp will obviously be feeling good after holding on to upset arch rival Ararat last Sunday. Considering the consistent good form ofTom Eckel and the likes of Jackson Dark and Zac Marrow and with Todd Matthews kicking six goals last week, the Warriors have plenty to work with in the next 12 months. Ararat led Stawell by more than four goals at half time and the result won’t sit well with team leaders. The Rats have a theoretically tougher opponent in Minyip-Murtoa on Saturday and will be hard pressed to again find themselves in a winning position. Jamie Whitehead kicked five goals for the Rats last outing and Will Bell won club votes while clever Jake Williamson and consistent Harry Ganley featured. The Burras had a bye last week and will looking for a quick return to the form than secured victory the previous week over the Saints. Clinton Midgley is hitting form at the right time of the year, Zac Cross is bobbing up with good games and John Delahunty and Jayden Beaumont are getting plenty of the ball. The Burras are sitting fourth and can’t afford any slip-ups. They will be too good this weekend.

Two Mallee Football League players represented AFL Victoria Country’s under-19 team against a VAFA under-19s on Sunday. Woomelang-Lascelles’ Trent Donnan and Sea Lake Nandaly Tigers’ Dan McEwan were a part of the four-point loss. Former Warrack Eagles player Hamish Morcom captained the side and missed a set shot after the siren to give his side victory.

Sales records tumble in big June T

oyota’s HiLux was Australia’s top-selling car in June, but its Corolla stablemate still leads the charts at the halfway mark of what is shaping up to be a record-breaking year.

ONE OF MANY: Hyundai’s i30 had a bumper June, though not quite bumper enough to unseat the Corolla, pictured, and Mazda3.

More vehicles were sold in Australia in June than any other month to date – 118,758, topping last June’s then-record 112,566 sales – while the year-to-date figure of 573,711 units is up 4.7 percent on the 2012 record of 1.12 million annual sales. The bumper June results also means a financial-year record of almost 1.14 million new vehicles were sold in the past 12 months, according to figures released by VFACTS.

Expensive tastes Reflecting buyers’ increasingly expensive tastes, boom segments included premium light-cars priced at more than $25,000 – up 165.8 percent in June, premium small-cars above $40,000 – up 115.5 percent, premium large-cars above $70,000 – up 22.7 percent, and premium small SUVs costing more than $40,000 – up 52.5 percent. SUV sales continued their ascent in June and for the half-year, with growth of 8.3 percent and 10.9 percent respectively. In all, a total of 170,539 SUVs moved out showroom doors between January and June –

almost one in every three vehicles sold overall.

months of the year – 4196 of which came in June.

Territory in 2005, when it sold 2537 units in June of that year.

Predictably, Toyota topped the charts in the final month of the financial year – generally the year’s biggest – with 22,160 sales, up 2.4 percent, enough to top eight segments including light – Yaris with 1564 sales, medium – Camry, 2652 – and utes – HiLux, 4931.

Number two in June was local hero Holden with 10,483 sales, although this is down 1.4 percent on last year. The result came from strong performances in its imported Colorado ute – 1914 sales combined – and Captiva 5 and 7 SUVs – 2248 sales combined, rather than its locally made stable.

When i30 sales are combined with the Elantra sedan, Hyundai actually topped Toyota in the small-car segment with a total of 4598 sales – compared with the Corolla’s combined hatch and sedan figure of 4196.

This latter figure made the HiLux range Australia’s top-selling car for the second month in a row, and was enough to make it the secondbiggest seller year-to-date – 20,721 sales, moving ahead of the Mazda3 – 20,077 YTD and 3672 in June.

Both Cruze and Commodore failed to fire. It is believed transport delays affected sales of the upgraded VF Commodore launched last month with much fanfare.

Corolla still leads all-comers as the most bought car in Australia, however, with 20,970 sales for the first six

Third for the month was Hyundai with 9914 sales, thanks to massive months for the i30 and ix35 – 2225 sales, a figure no SUV has achieved since the halcyon days of the Ford

Close behind the rampaging Korean car-maker was Ford, fresh off its decision to cease Australian manufacturing in 2016. The Blue Oval sold 9687 cars in June, with Ranger, Focus and Territory all strong sellers. There were 1169 Falcons sold in June, down 18.3 percent on last June, but noticeably higher than the circa-800 unit results achieved in the past few months.

Mazda’s June result of 9567 sales was only enough for fifth place for the month, but its record half-year total of 52,287 launches it into the second half of the year in second place overall, behind Toyota, and remain the most popular full-line importer. The Japanese company also set a financial-year record of 104,040 cars, up 7.6 percent.

Mazda Australia managing director Martin Benders said the start of special $19,990 driveaway pricing for the Mazda3 on July 1 should help the perennial best-seller stay strong against key rivals until the all-new version is launched locally next year.

Mitsubishi swoops Huge months for the Triton ute, Outlander SUV and the all-new Mirage saw Mitsubishi swoop into sixth place with 9257 sales – its highest figures ever as a full importer. Its half-yearly figure of 37,327 sales was also a full-import record. Nissan’s 9165 sales saw it grow 10 percent for the month, while its half-yearly figure of 44,065 sales was up 10.5 percent. However, this figure also trails the half-yearly results of fellow full importers Mazda – 52,287 – and Hyundai – 47,979 – companies that Nissan has vowed to topple. Mike Costello © GoAutoMedia, 2013

ASX adds grunt M

itsubishi Australia has replaced the niche-selling manual-diesel variant of its popular ASX city SUV with a punchier version that comes with an automatic transmission for the first time.

The new oil-burner uses the same 2.2-litre ‘DiD’ fourcylinder turbo-diesel and sixspeed automatic as its larger Outlander stablemate. At the same time, Mitsubishi has lowered the price of entry for the diesel by $3000 over the outgoing variant, thanks to the addition of a fourwheel-drive version, priced at $31,990 plus on-road costs. The flagship Aspire variant, meanwhile, is now $1500 more expensive than its manual Aspire predecessor, at $36,490. The new Euro 5-compliant 2.2 diesel produces the same 110kW of power as the smaller 1.8-litre unit it replaces, but torque grows to 360Nm between 1500 and 2750rpm – up 60Nm on the 1.8 DiD. Fuel consumption is a claimed 5.8 litres per 100km on the combined cycle, com-

BIG LOAD: The Holden VF SS V Redline Ute lapped the Nordscheife in a record-setting 8 minutes, 19.47 seconds.

pared to 5.7L/100km for the outgoing 1.8. Maximum towing capacity is rated 1400kg. But it is the addition of an automatic transmission that is arguably the biggest news, with the self-shifter a sure bet to net more sales than its manual-only predecessor in auto-favouring Australia. The 2.2-litre is available exclusively in auto guise. Mitsubishi will continue with the manual 1.8-litre diesel ASX option until later this year when it will be discontinued. The top-spec Aspire diesel may be more expensive than its petrol equivalent, but the $1500 difference buys a significant boost in torque

and fuel efficiency over the unchanged 110kW/197Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder MIVEC petrol engine and continuously variable transmission combo, which returns 8.1L/100km The petrol engine also remains in service in lower model grades, with the 2WD petrol with five-speed manual still priced from $25,990 and in Aspire trim from $28,990. The light SUV segment is fiercely competitive and the new ASX will have the likes of the top-selling Hyundai ix35, Nissan Dualis and Subaru XV to contend with. Daniel Gardner © GoAutoMedia, 2013

Holden’s VF Commodore Ute has set a world-record Nurburgring lap time for a light-commercial vehicle. But there’s a catch – it’s the only lap time ever recorded for a fair-dinkum ute on the famed circuit. A VF SS V Redline Ute completed a full 20.8km run of the Nordschleife section of the tortuous German circuit in 8 minutes 19.47 seconds, beating the lap times posted in 2002 by an Audi RS6, and a 2010 Chevy Camaro SS. Holden dynamics engineer Rob Trubiani was behind the wheel for the hot lap – not General Motors North American president Mark Reuss as rumoured – and said he wasn’t expecting to set a performance benchmark.

“We came up with a plan to tackle the Nurburgring and break the world record for a commercial or utility vehicle, but when we did our research it seemed one didn’t exist, so we decided to set a record instead,” he said. Holden is using the Australian government’s classification of the VF-based ute range as ‘Class NA – light goods vehicle’ to claim the unique record. Mr Trubiani said after discovering there was no lap record to break, the team aimed for a lap time in the 8min 30sec range, which they smashed. “To slash 11 seconds from that time with an 8min 19.47sec lap was incredible. There may not have been a

utility-vehicle record before but I’m proud to say the VF SS V Redline Ute is now the Nurburgring benchmark.” The ute that took on the ‘Ring was a ‘product-correct’ engineering test vehicle that was already in Europe for evaluation. Holden said the only modifications were the removal of the vehicle’s speed limiter and ‘a small amount of additional negative camber’ on the front wheels. After enduring 35 laps and 720 kilometres of testing over seven days at the legendary circuit, the only thing that needed changing were the ute’s brakes and tyres. Tim Nicholson © GoAutoMedia, 2013

Datsun relaunch T

his is the face of 21st century Datsun – Nissan’s reborn cut-price subsidiary. Nissan will re-launch the famous brand on July 15, and has released a teaser sketch of the first new car to use the nameplate in three decades – a small five-door hatchback.

The next time you’re unlucky enough to have a car crash, check which badge your ride is wearing. Chances are, if it is a new Ford Focus ST, the police, ambulance and fire brigade are already on their way. Ford said it had boosted the safety credentials of its Focus ST hot-hatch, including a system that automatically dials triple-zero in the event of a crash.

The Indian city of New Delhi will host the world premiere of both brand and model, a reflection of Datsun’s focus on developing markets, with market launch pencilled in for early 2014.

PHOENIX: Datsun will relaunch in India on July 15.

like sister brand Renault’s Romanian spin-off Dacia, which uses paid-off and proven underpinnings to create cheap and cheerful offerings for high-growth markets.

Nissan announced its intention to dust off the 80-year-old badge, which retired from use in 1983, in March 2012, as a key driver in its ambition to achieve eight percent global market share and eight percent operating profit under its Nissan Power 88 plan.

Nissan Australia says it has no plans to bring back the Datsun brand here, saying the Nissan and Infiniti badges will remain. It also appears unlikely Datsun will resurrect iconic nameplates such as the 240Z coupe.

NEWTOYOTA

As reported, the company expects its Datsun-branded vehicles to comprise up to half of its sales in India, Indonesia and Russia within three years. South Africa is also named as a key market, with a launch set for later in 2014.

A Datsun release says models will be ‘individually developed’ for different markets, but will follow a common inspiration – essentially, cars will be made locally and modified to suit local conditions.

In India, news reports suggest Nissan plans a new plant to build about 200,000 Datsuns a year. The Datsun name, which can trace its origins back to 1914 when it started out as Dat-Go, was phased out in 1981 and replaced globally by Nissan.
