Horsham artist Amabile Dalfarra-Smith is set to take Wimmera art lovers ‘through the looking glass’ with an exhibition of paintings based on the popular Lewis Carroll series Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland. The former school teacher turned full-time artist has completed 37 oil paintings linked to Carroll’s stories. They form the exhibition ‘A Walk in Wonderland’ which opens next Thursday at University of Ballarat’s Christine Smith Gallery in Horsham. Ms Dalfarra-Smith cites surrealist painters Salvador Dali, René Magritte and Lucian Freud and pop art icon Andy Warhol as major inspirations for the work. “From a creative viewpoint, this has been a liberating experience,” she said. “I have been ‘allowed’ to use impossible images to create quirky and interesting pieces.” The exhibition is open until April 22. Hooke’s second top-100 rating for Norton Estate’s flagship product, joining two top-100 ratings for the winery by renowned wine authority James Halliday.

By GREG O’CONNOR

W

immera micro winery Norton Estate has done it again, earning a fourth top-100 rating for its boutique Shiraz wines.

“A dedicational wine picked by mum before she passed away in 2010 was also rated by James Halliday in his ‘best of the best’, in the James Halliday 2013 Wine Companion,” Mr Spence added.

The family-run five-star winery at Lower Norton, 15-kilometres south-west of Horsham, has won high praise for its 2010 vintage Shiraz in leading Australian food and wine magazine, Gourmet Traveller.

“It’s another valuable recognition that Norton Estate is a producer of some outstanding wines, further cementing the brand as a producer of some of Australia’s best boutique Shiraz.”

The publication’s wine reviewer Huon Hooke listed the 2010 Arapiles Run in his top100 new-release Australian and New Zealand wines. Mr Hooke gave the new Arapiles Run a four-star rating, scoring it 92 points out of 100 to place it among his top 20 Shiraz wines produced in Australia. He also recommended a 17-year cellaring life. “Penetrating and strongly fruit-focused with plum, dark cherry, tobacco, old leather, mineral and appealing spicy flavours,” Mr Hooke wrote. “A great mix of fruit and savoury in an elegant, bold style.” Grampians winery Mount Langi Ghiran, 25-kilometres east of Ararat, produced the top-rated Australian red wine with its 2010 Langi Shiraz receiving a five-star, 97-point rating.

rienced wine producers like Mount Langi Ghiran and Dog Rock is extremely gratifying. It shows we’re on the right track,” he said.

“Wine show awards, writeups and reviews have been consistently praiseworthy of the wines we’ve produced,” Mr Spence said.

Norton Estate manager Chris Spence said the rating put his family’s new wine among outstanding company.

“To have the 2010 Arapiles Run finish second in last year’s Australian Boutique Wine Awards gave it instant credibility as one the best boutique wines available, now this cements that standing.”

“We’ve faced some difficult conditions, but the good summers have produced first-class fruit.

Boutique Pyrenees winery Dog Rock, 25-kilometres north-east of Ararat, scored a five-star, 96-point rating for its 2011 Single Vineyard Shiraz produced by former Southcorp winemaker Allen Hart, placing it second in Australia.

“We’re well past where we thought we’d be at this stage. But we feel the best is yet to come,” he said.

Council director of Community Services Angela Murphy said the ‘walk through’ was a chance to explain the details of the redevelopment plan. “As we get closer to being able to commence work at the site, we want to provide the opportunity to interested

members of the community to come along and see exactly what the redevelopment entails,” Ms Murphy said.

“We will talk about the planned refurbishments of heritage elements of the hall, such as the ticket box and the terrazzo seal. We will also explain the process of improving lighting and acoustics in the hall, while retaining heritage features.” The design for the new 530-seat auditorium as well as the foyer, box office, bar

State award for Stawell project S

tawell Steps at Cato Park has won an excellence award from the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australia Victorian division.

Northern Grampians Shire mayor Cr Wayne Rice joined marketing and community director Jim Nolan to accept the award on council’s behalf at a presentation in Melbourne. Stawell Steps won the category for capital projects under $1-million. Cr Rice said the council was pleased the project has been recognised amongst engineering professionals. pleased that our staff members’ work has been recognised by their peers.”

The spillways were a necessary flood mitigation project but Stawell Steps also became an architecturally designed structure linking the two spillways with a stepped structure made from bricks. It has now become a community meeting space and sculptural feature of the park. It also includes a fully accessible area suitable for wheelchairs.

The IPWEA Excellence Awards recognises excellence in the innovation, development, construction and management of public works projects and services. The awards celebrate the success of individuals or teams and are open to agencies involved in public works such as councils, service authorities, government bodies and private companies.

“Stawell Steps was a huge undertaking for Council engineers and Monash University architecture students who were integral in its design and construction,” Cr Rice said.

The capital works category is open to the design and/or construction of a public works infrastructure project of any scale that demonstrates best practice engineering and demonstrably adds value to the community.

YOUR SAY Red Cross Calling SIR,- The Horsham unit of Red Cross wants to thank the people of Horsham for their generous donations to Red Cross Calling in March. Special thanks also go to the section leaders and collectors whose voluntary work is a vital part of the campaign. Red Cross Calling for 2013 was a great success. The total for Horsham and district was $18,580 compared with $17,980 in 2012. People turn to Red Cross for support in times of natural disaster anywhere in the world.

This appeal allows Red Cross to carry out its everyday work in supporting thousands of vulnerable people in Australia and further afield. This also involves helping isolated elderly people and providing breakfast to hungry children as well as caring for people in crisis. Some areas of Horsham were not collected due to a shortage of volunteers so I’m keen to hear from anyone able to give up about three hours of their time next March.

Labour pains SIR,- In reply to the letter from John Herring, Kaniva, March 28 edition of the Weekly Advertiser. I’m not sure which planet John has been on, but his comments about the Labour Government are quite incredulous. Julia Gillard’s government is by far the worst government that Australia has ever had. A view held by the majority of the voting public. September polling day will demonstrate that with profound clarity. John has some very strange views of our current PM’s abilities and decisions. Don’t hold your breath John for a return of this inept and disastrous mob running the country at present.

I’d also appreciate any feedback your readers have on this year’s campaign. I’m

ork is under way to honour the 2014 centenary of Australian soldiers’ contribution to the First World War.

Federal Member for Mallee John Forrest said an ANZAC Centenary Committee had been established in Mallee electorate to consider options commemorating the service and sacrifice of Australian service men and women in World War I. “The committee will be encouraging eligible veteran and community or commemorative projects and will be interested in hearing from community and ex-service organisations, schools and other educational institutions, museums and cultural institutions, local government authorities and other non-profit community organisations,” Mr Forrest said. “Projects could be important military anniversaries, enlistments and other First World War events that have had a significant impact on the local community, new First World War memorials or honour boards, the restoration of existing First World War memorials or honour boards, the preservation, interpretation and display of First World War wartime and military memorabilia and artefacts. “Funding of $100,000 for this purpose will be provided through the Federal Government’s ANZAC Centenary Local Grants Program and will be available from July 1, 2013, to June 30, 2014.” Mr Forrest said the committee would assess and co-ordinate applications for the funding and make recommendations about projects prior to them being submitted to the Department of Veterans’ Affairs for consideration. “This will ensure that proposals meet the eligibility and assessment criteria and that they represent community views,” he said. “Every year on ANZAC Day, hundreds of thousands of Australian’s pay tribute to the sacrifice, bravery and spirit of those who have lost their lives in battle as well as those who have served and returned or remain involved in conflict and peacekeeping missions. “The ANZAC Centenary Local Grants Program is a further opportunity for local community groups in Mallee to commemorate and honour their service and sacrifice.” Information and application forms can be obtained from Mr Forrest’s offices by calling 1300 131 620 or by visiting www.anzaccentenary.gov.au/grants. Expressions of interest can be lodged at Mr Forrest’s office at 60 Campbell Street Swan Hill 3585 or mail to PO Box 487 Swan Hill 3585.

Parenthood expert to help regional families

P

arenting specialist Lillian Reekie will be in the region next week to help young parents cope with the ‘rollercoaster’ of raising a family.

“So, not being prepared to take the ‘medical’ route we spent several years gathering and sorting through information that would help with our son’s hyperactivity and aggression.

The Gold Coast-based former school teacher is presenting a series of workshops on subjects ranging from childhood depression to teen pregnancy.

Ms Reekie started a business called The Parenting Strategist to ‘equip parents to experience happy, healthy children and relationships’. She now shares her passion for healthy and happy children, families and relationships with parents through her coaching, books, seminars and workshops.

Known as ‘The Parenting Strategist’, the mother of two boys has written five books on parenthood, with her latest titled The Best Parent I Can Be. Ms Reekie’s books focus on healthy families, children, relationships and parenting. She also shares the journey her family has experienced since her youngest son was born in 1993. When he was a toddler, Ms Reekie’s son was diagnosed with childhood depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and oppositional defitant disorder. Ms Reekie said she made it her mission to find out why he was given this diagnosis and how she could help him. “Our son was aggressive, hyperactive and just a constantly difficult child,” she said. “With the health challenges experienced by our son we started a journey to set about trying to find the answers.” Ms Reekie said her family had been on a ‘rollercoaster ride’ over the years, experiencing many hurdles and challenges along the way.

Seminar

Lillian Reekie

“Everywhere we looked the medical profession told us that our son needed to be on drugs. I guess we weren’t ready to follow their recommendations,” she said. “In the case of our son’s ODD/ADHD we just had an intuitive insight, a little voice inside that said, ‘there must be a better way.’ “After he was diagnosed we did much research into the condition and the treatments that were available. There were too many side effects from the drugs, much of which we personally weren’t prepared to risk.

Wimmera Southern Mallee LLEN and Horsham College are bringing Ms Reekie to the Wimmera for a two and a half hour seminar at Wimmera Trade Training Centre Horsham College campus on April 17 from 6.45pm.

PUBLIC MEETING – MONDAY 15TH APRIL, 6.30PM GWMWATER CUSTOMERS Review of Water Prices 2013 – 18 Victoria’s independent water regulator, the Essential Services Commission, is conducting a review of water prices proposed to apply across Victoria for a five-year period from 1st July 2013. On 26th March, the Commission released a Draft Decision of Regional Urban Water Businesses Price Review 2013 and Rural Water Businesses Price Review 2013 for regional and rural Victoria, including proposed prices for GWMWater customers.

Work started on the site in February, with an expected completion date for stages two and three at the end of June 2014. Wimmera Uniting Care chief executive Wendy Middleton said Searle Bros Building Contractors

had completed site excavation works and had started boxing out for the concrete slab.

“It’s exciting to see the foundations go in for what is going to be a fantastic facility,” she said. “I would like to acknowledge the Regional Development Australia Fund and Regional Development Victoria – without their funding this project would not be possible.” Ms Middleton said she wanted the community to be informed

As part of the public consultation of the Draft Decision, the Commission will hold a public meeting at 6.30pm on Monday 15th April at the Mercure Horsham, 118 Baille Street, Horsham. Customers of GWMWater are invited to attend to hear more about the Price Review 2013 process and proposed water prices in their region over the next five years.

People wishing to attend should register their interest by no later than Friday 12thth April via water@esc.vic.gov.au.

“We understand there may be some frustrations with car parking at the moment but we just ask the community to be patient,” she said.

“I’m sure it will be worth the wait.” Ms Middleton said the contractor had engaged several local subcontractors and had employed three casual sub contractors to work on the site.

“You can have different cultural backgrounds, religions and interests.” Ms Middleton said there were also other types of care which people could participate in, including respite, emergency, oncall weekend, short-term, long-term and permanent care . She said people could call the agency on 5362 4000 for more information.

“The weather on Saturday was absolutely stunning,” she said. “The riders thoroughly enjoyed these perfect conditions and many cycled additional legs of the relay.” Ms Hunter said the team reached Horsham in record time. “We cycled in by 6pm which meant we were able to enjoy the gorgeous scenery from Horsham to Cherrypool at dusk – a leg usually done in the pitch black,” she said. “Wimmera Uniting Care is about to start a campaign to recruit more foster carers and I would encourage anyone who may be interested to come to an information session tonight between 7pm and 8pm at 28 Urquhart Street in Horsham,” she said.

Ms Middleton said the apology was a significant step in acknowledging separated mothers harmed by the unethical and unlawful forced adoption malpractices which led some young and vulnerable mothers to relinquish their babies against their will.

In particular, a report from the Centre of Independent Studies pointed out that the apology could endorse an over-emphasis placed on ‘supporting not separating’.

www.theweeklyadvertiser.com.au

Ms Middleton said it was best if foster carers were available in the same region as the child’s home so the impact of the move was lessened.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard moved the apology last month on behalf of the nation to acknowledge the trauma of forced adoption in Australia between the 1950s and mid-1970s.

She said the apology had also sparked debate about social policy and how the community and agencies such as Wimmera Uniting Care protected the safety and wellbeing of children in the community.

f you have been with the same bank, using the same style of account for many years, now might be a good time to review your banking strategy. Start by assessing which bank or banks have the services you require at the best price and access.

Banks are keen to get your business and compete by offering lower fee options, which due to ongoing competition, are continually reviewed to attract more customers. Many people have found The Power of Two to be a useful method to employ when managing their bank accounts.

This is where ‘virtual banking’ becomes an attractive option. Many online savings accounts offer a similar interest rate to term deposits but with the added attraction of being able to access your money immediately or within 24 hours. And if you choose the right one, there are no bank fees. These accounts are simple but you can generally only access them via the internet or phone. They don’t offer chequebooks or credit cards and are not set up

When your everyday working account is running low on funds, you merely transfer money – by phone or internet – from your interest-bearing account into your working account. Hence, you get the best of both worlds – flexibility and more interest. The Power of Two is a simple way to take greater control over your money. At first it might seem like a hassle to change banks, but when you look at the long-term benefits from paying lower fees or having better access to your money, it could just be worth a few hours of your time. • Robert Goudie is an authorised representative of Meritum Financial Group Pty Ltd AFSL 245569.

“Council has appointed a consultant to establish its new Municipal Early Years Plan, in collaboration with Yarriambiack and West Wimmera shire councils,” Mr Miller said.

“Although we are working with our neighbouring councils through the program’s consulta-

ast Grampians Health Service has welcomed a new obstetrician onto its team.

Dr Chee Sheng Wong, a partner at the Ararat Medical Centre, has graduated from a Ballarat Health Services 12-month training course with an Advanced Diploma of Obstetrics.

GET IN EARLY - ORDER TODAY!

The developments mean Dr Wong can undertake normal deliveries and caesarean-section operations. Health service chief executive Nick Bush said he was delighted that Dr Wong had started on a roster to strengthen obstetrics in Ararat. “I thank Dr Wong for undertaking the training in Ballarat for 12 months and for the upheaval to himself, his wife Anita and their children. I thank them for their support,” he said.

Dr Wong will assist Dr Pieter Pretorius, Dr Michael Connellan and Dr Derek Pope on the obstetrics roster.

Mr Bush thanked the GP obstetricians for their commitment to the health service, particular Dr Pretorius who had car-

ried much of the on-call responsibilities as the only doctor with caesarean-section qualifications.

Former curator returns for exhibition opening Former Horsham Regional Art Gallery curator Trevor Smith will officially open a Spinners and Weavers exhibition at Horsham Library tomorrow night. Mr Smith will open Stitching Together: Stories of Connectedness, a project developed by

local spinners Val Pascal and Pat Walker to support local and visiting weavers. Horsham Rural City Council cultural arts officer Jillian Pearce said the project resulted in the creation of 12 pieces from a workshop in Halls Gap last year.

“Each square has its own story by the creator, each individual in style and reflection of memories of past present and future,” Ms Pearce said. “It was wonderful to see new friendships developed and the creative process shared to form pieces created over the

Dodson, Finiguerra take Valley victory a ‘sit’ behind the leaders.

As the field of metropolitan quality gallopers made their way past the ‘school’ heading toward the home bend McKechnie had Finiguerra ready to pounce.

T

elopea Downs trainer Darryl Dodson has the luxury of a few good quality horses in his stable most of the time. One of these gallopers leading the charge for their mentor is Finiguerra, who made his return to racing at Moonee Valley last Saturday after a seven month absence from the racetrack. The six-year-old gelding took his place in a 1519-metre handicap with a lucrative prize purse of $80,000. Melbournian punters had no respect for the boy from the bush, reflected on course with odds of 20-1 with local bagmen. Dodson entrusted the mount to multiple Horsham Cup winning jockey Holly McKechnie. Once the iconic Moonee Valley starting bell sounded, Finiguerra jumped well landing in a leading position early, soon opting for

After straightening for the run to the judge, the son of Chatswood stud resident stallion Niello eased off heels into clear galloping room, finishing with a strong burst down the straight to win by a length. The win was career victory number seven for stake earnings of $272,000. Finiguerra’s next assignment is likely to be the $150,000 Warrnambool Cup in May.

Snake slithers to SA Horsham hobby trainer Stephen Lenehan has been achieving good results in recent times with his rejuvenated galloper Milensnake. This continued last Sunday at Bordertown when Lenehan had his charge engaged in an $8000 sprint over 1200 metres. Millicent jockey Paul Marks was reunited with the gelding taking over from regular rider Jacob Rule who wasn’t competing at the meeting. Milensnake overcome past barrier

demons, flying out of the machines hitting the ground running early in the race. Marks, a hobby cray fisherman put on a fine front-running display giving his mount a gun run out in the lead.

After rounding the tight home turn the son of Golden Snake was able to give a strong kick accounting for his three rivals scoring a length victory at the wire. The win was Milensnake’s fourth career victory since arriving at Lenehan’s stables after previously racing for Horsham owner breeder Worrall Dunn.

In brief • Darryl Dodson’s red-hot form continued at Bordertown and Mildura, scoring wins with Hurricane Rock and Bombalurina. • Christine Puls is also having a purple patch booting home Mickiem at Mildura last Monday for trainer Ron Daniel. • Horsham hoop Holly McKechnie has also franked her good form with wins at Bordertown and Mildura. • Josh Mackay is treasurer and executive of Horsham and District Racing Club.

YOUNG GUNS FIRE: Ideal conditions greeted competitors for Callawadda-Stawell Clay Target Club’s annual Good Friday shoot. Competitors from all regions of Victoria and one keen shooter from the Northern Territory took part in the event, with a father-son combination providing one of the early highlights. Central Wimmera Gun Club member Wayne Wilde shot his first 50/50 straight before his son Lockie won his first sash. Wayne then shot the only perfect score of 150/150 to win the Jorgensen Family Pointscore Championship. Marc Crimmins won the second event, the Westway Nursery Single Barrel Championship, after a shoot-off with five other competitors. Former Wimmera Sports Star of the Year Ash Bolwell took the third event with 141/141 after a lengthy shoot-off. Tom Pilgrim was Junior High Gun winner. The club’s $500 cash incentive for any shooter able to complete the program without missing went unclaimed. Every competitor had missed by the second event. Good signs for Blues tion with Deek Roberts along with new recruits Pat Purcell and Cade Wellington fighting hard all day.

MALLEE FOOTBALL LEAGUE

The Devils will hit back hard in this game, but the Roos will have to much class and will overrun Hopetoun by four goals.

By MICK SHANNON

R

ound one turned out to be a huge week for the Mallee Football League with Woomelang-Lascelles taking care of Hopetoun by 59 points, Ouyen United going down to Sea Lake Nandaly Tigers by 50 points and Walpeup Underbool easily disposing of Jeparit-Rainbow by 10 goals.

Cats to attack The final game of the round will see an enthusiastic Woomelang-Lascelles take on a depleted Ouyen United. The Cats had a terrific game last round with Jayden Lonergan on fire up forward kicking five while Trent Donnan and Dwayne Hamlyn were strong at the clearances.

There were good signs for all teams though, which should make for a fantastic second round of footy.

Ouyen United will need to produce a much better performance this week if they are going to be any chance of betting the Cats.

Beulah will have their first game for the season after the bye last week when they take on Jeparit-Rainbow at Beulah. The Lakers will be looking to hit back hard after their loss against Walpeup-Underbool. There were promising signs for Jeparit-Rainbow with Simon Clugston producing one of his best games for the club while new recruits Chris Meyer and Josh Murphy played good games. Beulah have their sights set on a big season with a number of exciting recruits joining the club. Micah and Callum Buchanan, brothers of former AFL footballer Amon Buchanan, have come on board and were both dominant during a recent practice match. The Blues have increased their midfield depth dramatically with new players Tim McIntosh, Shaun Monohan as well as the Buchanan brothers all able to run through the centre, along with current players such as Tyler Lehmann and Brad Shannon. Jeparit-Rainbow will come out all guns blazing and Beulah will need to keep an eye on classy onballer Heath Clugston as well as his brother

New player and ex-AFL footballer Damian Cupido was impressive with four goals last round and will be out to produce a huge game this week.

Simon who dominated in several key positions last week. Beulah should prove to be too strong, and will stretch the Lakers up forward with David King patrolling full forward and new recruit Dennis Redden making his mark at centre half forward. Beulah will win this one by 40 points.

Devils in deep The second match of the round will see Hopetoun travel to Underbool to do battle with Walpeup-Underbool. The Devils were disappointing first up against Woomelang-Lascelles and will be out to make amends against the Roos. Hopetoun will need their defence to be rock solid with the Walpeup-Underbool forwards on fire last round.

Wade Champion booted seven while Kyle Munro started the year off well with a bag of five. The Devils will rely on Zac Robins to play another good game down back, and will be hoping Ben Reid returns from injury to take his post at centre half back. The midfield battle should be a tough with the Roos relying on Ben Fisher, Tyson Gordon and Kane Munro to take control at the clearances although they will have tough opposi-

Aaron Morrish played a great game for the Demons as did Josh Langdon who will get the job on Lonergan. Wo o m e l a n g - L a s c e l l e s played quick, smart football last week and will look to continue that trend against Ouyen United. The Demons will need a number of players to lift and will give themselves every chance of taking down the Cats, but will find themselves trailing when the final siren goes with the depth and skill of Woomelang-Lascelles too much for the Demons to overcome. Sea Lake Nandaly Tigers has the bye.

Boan in contention

The irrepressible Meggy Boan – a three-time winner in her first season with the Stawell Amateur Athletic Club last year – began her 2013 campaign with a stunning win in the five-kilometre Dooen Engineering Handicap at Stawell last Saturday.

When the Chinese expatriate made her cross country debut with the club in a 5km event last year she looked out of her league as she meandered around in a modest 28.26 minutes. But like a rock rolling downhill, the gritty Rupanyup gardener gathered momentum and kept ripping minutes off her 5km times – an astounding 5.25 minutes in the intervening 12 months – enabling her to scoot over the dust-dry Dooen course to post an impressive 23.01. By her own admission, Meggy likes to win and she is

relentless in that goal – four wins in a calendar year is testament to that. The club returns to the Ironbarks on Saturday for the Barham Insurance Handicap over five kilometres. Runners of all ages and abilities are invited meet at North Park from 1.30pm.

Swifts’ sluggish start to continue Rupanyup’s top liners are as good as any in the league and they will be looking for Tom Tyler, Brett Niewand, Daniel Schaper and Matt Weidemann to really take the next step and become good solid consistent senior footballers and take some pressure of the key Panthers.

HORSHAM DISTRICT FOOTBALL LEAGUE

A

By GRANT KUCHEL

buoyant and upbeat Edenhope-Apsley should ensure that the history of Swifts’ sluggish starts to the season continues.

Rupanyup will want to fine-tune their game before a massive clash with Laharum and I’m sure Glenn Wyatt will want to get as much game time into his second-tier players before facing their first big challenge of the season.

The Saints were sensational last week and the Baggies will find they are harassed and pressured for every possession.

Roos under pressure The Roos may well find themselves sitting at zero-two unless they can unlock the magic formula to stop a Laharum side high on confidence after a thumping win last week.

It is early season but questions will be raised over the Baggies’ fitness because they managed only three goals after half time last week. I’m sure Paul Hanns and Ben Martin will want to address this with their charges this week. Ricky Whitehead and Sean Mantell will enjoy the wide open spaces of the Edenhope ground and it will be worth viewing the clash between Mantell and Taylor Milner. The key to the game will be the Saints halfback line – super efficient Chris Oliver and a fully fit Matt Close will make life hard for a Baggies forward line that relied on small running forwards to put the score on the board in their last outing. Newcomer Ashley Cowen showed his class to the Baggies faithful while youngster Zach Salmi showed he has the class to become a prominent player in the senior side. The biggest headache facing the Baggies will be who gets the job on James Dixon – he could quite easily have had a bagful last week as he roamed across half forward and if the Baggies can’t find a good match- up then the Saints will be well on the way to victory and the Baggies to a long road trip home.

Tigers face Kees’ wrath Pimpino host a Kalkee side that would have been extremely disappointed with their season opener and the poor Tigers may feel the full wrath of the Kees this week. It would be a long time since a Tigers outfit has been thumped by Natimuk and one gets the feeling the yellow and black are in for a pretty long season. Kalkee looked under pressure with every possession last week and Matt Beddison will be looking for more run and carry through the middle of the ground and small forwards Sam Jasper, Lachie Robinson and Brendan ‘Boomer’

PICKERT LINE: Former Horsham Hornets basketballer and Kalkee newcomer Tim Pickert contests possession with support from Josh Mibus and Paul Christian, while new Edenhope-Apsley coach James Dixon moves in to spoil. Pictures: WILLAMY IMAGES

McDonald to get to the feet of forwards Grant Schultz and Josh Beddison on a more regular basis. Pimpinio will rely on Sam Turmine to kick a bag if they are to stay in touch with the Kees but they will struggle to break through a half-back line led by Ben Hobbs, Josh Mibus and captain Ben Lawson. Pimpinio has an extremely young list and their lighter bodied players will find it hard to match it with the likes of Steve Schultz, Tim Wade and Paul Christian around the stoppages and scrimmages and I’m sure the Kees will want to get back on the winners list in a hurry before they face another huge contest against the Baggies next week.

Red-hot Bombers Red-hot Noradjuha-Quantong will make it two from two by completely outclassing a hapless Taylors Lake side that opened with a hammering last week. The clash may just have a little extra spice because Bombers coach Adam Hall left the Lakers to take up his new position along with ruckman Jonathon Dixon. They will love nothing more than inflicting some pain on their former side. The Bombers boast plenty of capable goal kickers – Jordan Huff, Brady King, Sam Wedell and Shane Oakely are all capable of kicking bags and the Lakers’ backline led by Jason Weir

and Luke Robertson face a long day at the office trying to match the run of the Bomber forwards. Taylors Lake will need plenty of drive from left-footed Dean Harberger, Craig Britten and Max English if they are going to give their forwards any chance of kicking a winning score and causing a massive upset. Noradjuha-Quantong knows the importance of a solid opening start to the season if they are to be a top-three contender – it may come down to percentage later in the season so expect the Bombers to be ruthless this week.

Rams chase second win Can Natimuk make it two wins in a row for the first time in a number of years? That’s the big question this week as they venture over to Rupanyup. As good as the win was for Natimuk last week they will come up short as they will be unable to cover Panthers match-winners Matt Tyler, Drew Tyler, David Lang, Nathan Sasche and Glenn Wyatt. The Rams have welcomed back Shaun McDonald to the side after a season-ending injury in last year’s interleague and he quickly showed he has lost none of his class. Aong with new recruit Tim Friend and Todd Stevenson, Natimuk has top-line players capable of influencing the contest.

Big man Shannon Argall again looms as the key after kicking 18 goals last week and it’s hard to see Harrow-Balmoral having a tall defender capable of limiting him from kicking another bag, especially if Laharum win clean ball in the middle of the ground. Robbie Miller, Daniel Easson and Sam Winfield form a potent trio in the middle of the ground and Brent Forsyth, Dalton Burns and David Vickery will need to work overtime to nullify the Laharum trio from running rampant. Up forward the Harrow Balmoral side will again look to veteran Brent Penny to be the key target and he will require plenty of help from Mick Phelan, Tim Cogger and Chris Heath if the Roos are going to apply enough scoreboard pressure on the Demons. The Roos will be hoping that Callum Hobbs is fit to play because the hard-working midfielder could provide plenty of grunt and class to the midfield and around stoppages that the Roos sadly lacked last season. Laharum look to have more depth on every line and I’m expecting the Demons to be still on top of the ladder once round two is complete.

HDFL round two Harrow-Balmoral v Laharum at Balmoral Edenhope-Apsley v Swifts at Edenhope Pimpinio v Kalkee at Pimpinio Rupanyup v Natimuk at Rupanyup Taylors Lake v Noradjuha-Quantong at Dock Lake Reserve

Pre-season hype is done, let’s see who’s ready to run MININERA DISTRICT FOOTBALL LEAGUE By JONATHAN BOX The opening round of the 2013 season is here. There has been a lot of practice matches, plenty of movement in and out of the league with clearances and new coaches along with plenty of hype. Now is the time for the 12 clubs in the league to find out where they are at and

whether they have had a successful pre-season. Lismore-Derrinallum will have a tough ask taking on last year’s premiers. Penshurst have had changes to their premiership team with the likes of Taylor McKenry and Kane Uebergang moving clubs and with the pending outgoing clearance of 2012 premiership coach Grant Ewing, new coach Justin Eales will have big shoes to fill. However, with a majority of last

year’s players still at the club and the inclusion of several newcomers including Rory and Kieran Neeson from Glenthompson-Dunkeld, I am sure they will remain a powerhouse of the league. Last year’s runners-up Tatyoon will host nearest neighbours SMW Rovers. Again, like most other clubs these two have had their share of clearances in and out. Most notably Tatyoon’s league best and fairest runner-up Aaron Bird along with

Damian Cameron and SMW Rovers’ goalkicker Leigh Marshall. Tatyoon has proven to be a strong team in the past and I am sure this year will be no exception. SMW Rovers will have their work cut out in their round-one clash. Season 2012 cellar dwellers Woorndoo Mortlake have made a lot of changes in an attempt to move up in the league rankings. Coach Adam Ryan from Allansford has taken over the reins from Stephen Sinnott and

Be part of Breuers

having been able to bring a few new players with him, the 2013 Tigers will look very different. They will be looking to start their season strongly when they host Caramut. Games to complete the round – Great Western hosts GlenthompsonDunkeld, Ararat travels to Macarthur to play Hawkesdale-Macarthur and Wickliffe-Lake Bolac’s new coach Nick Willox will take his team to Willaura for their opening clash with the Pumas.

Young Demons ready to step up A

By GREG O’CONNOR

wise man once said the definition of insanity was doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. So a lot of Wimmera Football League followers must be crazy – they’ve been writing off Horsham every year in the hope that a new hero will come along to take the league’s highest team prize. And 10 years later, the Demons hold 10 shiny premiership cups while the rest of the competition still waits for the fall from grace. But there’s no doubt the Demons face their biggest challenge yet. The man who coached the team to the past seven premierships has switched to their biggest rival while many of the old guard have moved on to greener pastures. Horsham president Laurie Taylor doesn’t seem worried about the rivals knocking on the Demons’ door. The club is sticking with a youth policy that made it the envy of the football world. Joint coaches Jordyn Burke and Brad Hartigan are in the hot seat and working on a new game style. Tyler Blake is set for a breakout season after learning the ropes in elite under-18 competition, the TAC Cup.

And the club is set unleash a new batch of young guns ready to take on the world. That’s the optimist’s view of Horsham anyway. The pessimist in me looks at names like Paul Adlington (Kaniva-Leeor United), Jordan Duncan (Geelong league), Damien Skurrie (retired), Terry Arnel (retired), Jake Lloyd (Sydney Swans), Sean Christopher (Goulburn Valley) and Damian Thomson (Kalkee) and wonders where the famous Horsham grunt is coming from in 2013. Aaron Barnett and Josh Rentsch are also gone, while young gun Charles Gabbe will spend most of the season with North Ballarat Rebels. But Taylor is adamant the club has the stocks to push for an unprecedented 11th flag. “We’ve got a lot of good young kids coming through,” he said. “Rhona Conboy, Billy Lloyd and Jordie Schmidt will have big roles to play. Darcy Taylor had a hip operation last year and is ready for plenty of senior footy, Joel Ladlow is the fittest he’s ever been and Nick Thomson is ready to take a regular place in the senior line-up,” he said. “Everyone wants to take Horsham down, that’s fine. We’re just sneaking along. We’ll play a lot of kids this year. It’ll be a fast team – we won’t be the biggest, but we’ll be fast –

they’ll move the ball quickly. When you get young kids involved in senior footy, it’s exciting. Only former Horsham RSL Diggers defender Tim Eldridge looms as a club recruit likely to take a place in the Demons starting 18 as the club continues with a youthful approach that has yet to falter. Fifteen players from last year’s premiership played juniors with the club, 18 the year before. “Ten years ago Guy Smith took Brad Hartigan and Jye Smith out of the under-17s and played them in the seniors,” Taylor said. “We’re still doing it.” He says the club is happy to take an underdog tag into the season. “No-one’s talking about us much and that’s fine. There’s a fresh approach at the top and exciting feeling around the club. It’s good.”

Commodore drops out of top 10 H

olden’s Commodore has fallen off the shortlist of Australia’s top-selling cars for the first time in the brand’s 34-year history, bumped by a reborn small hatchback from Japan.

lifting sales by more than two thirds to sell 498 cars, but still well short of the volume it was selling at the same time last year.

SELLING AUSTRALIA SHORT: The Mazda3 has taken out the top spot on the national sales charts.

Other locally made cars had mixed results, with the Toyota Camry falling by 18 percent to 1916 sales, the Ford Territory falling 20 percent to 1059 sales, and the Holden Cruze falling 19 percent for the month to 2335 sales.

VFACTS figures released for the month of March show the monthsold Nissan Pulsar narrowly outsold the once-dominant Holden Commodore, forcing the iconic Australian large family car into 11th spot on the charts.

Buyers wanted fewer locally made cars, with sales of Australian fare down 30 percent compared with the first three months of last year.

Mazda’s 3 small car remains the darling of the market, selling almost 3800 units in March to cement it in the running as Australia’s favourite car. Overall, the market tread water last month, selling 97,400 vehicles – 216 fewer than the same month last year.

Sales bump However, more buyers visited newcar showrooms than in February, with sales volumes bumping by almost five percent. But buyers tended to flock to one side of the showroom more than the other, according to data released by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries. Passenger car sales fell by almost five percent in March compared to February, after more buyers instead

Buyers

preferred to wander over and kick the tyres on SUVs, sales of which rose by more than six percent. These SUV sales were helped by the introduction of Toyota’s all-new RAV4, which narrowly fell outside the top 10 best sellers for the month, and a blinding month of sales for Mazda’s compact CX-5, with 1830 units delivered. Overall, the market is five percent ahead of where it was this time last year, with the FCAI predicting that if momentum continues sales for 2013 are likely hit a record 1.12 million.

Toyota remains the top-selling marque in Australia, capturing a 19 percent share of the market in March. Mazda, however, has displaced Holden in second place on the leader’s board, snaring a 9.4 percent share compared with the Lion badge’s 8.5 percent. Nissan, Hyundai and Ford have all taken advantage of Mitsubishi’s fall from grace, while Volkswagen and Honda nudged ahead of Subaru to round out the top 10 marques. Large car sales continued to slide, with Ford’s Falcon losing almost 35

percent of sales for the month compared with February to peg only 831 units. That means it is now outsold by the likes of Jeep’s Grand Cherokee off-roader, Mercedes-Benz’s C-Class compact luxury car, and the Volkswagen Tiguan soft-roader.

The month also saw a shift in the type of buyers, with businesses and government slowing down on the number of passenger car purchases they made. Only 19 more electric vehicles were added to Australian roads during March, with five of them making their way into private buyers’ driveways. The other 14 were picked up by business and government.

Likewise, Holden’s VE Commodore logged only 1606 sales to end the month, 40 percent down on the previous month, as buyers hold onto their money ahead of the launch of the radically restyled VF model due in a few months’ time.

Hybrid cars continued to display signs of a turnaround, jumping by almost 20 percent for the month compared with March. Tellingly, too, the bulk of interest in hybrid technology came from private buyers.

Toyota’s Aurion had a good month,

Golf triumphant

DELIVERING THE GOODS: Ford says the Ranger XLS is something customers have asked for.

V

olkswagen has won its fourth World Car of the Year title in five years, taking out top honours this year with its Golf Mk7.

The Golf edged out finalists including the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, Porsche Boxster/ Cayman twins and Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ/Scion FR-S sports car triplets. Finalists were whittled down from a top-10 list that included Golf competitors the Volvo V40 and Audi A3 as well as the Peugeot 208 light-car. Mazda’s CX-5 and Land Rover’s Range Rover were the only two SUVs to make it into the top 10 while the midsize Mazda6 range rounded out the list. The win for the Golf marks the fourth time in five years that a Volkswagen vehicle has taken out the award after the Golf Mk6 was crowned the winner in 2009 followed by the Polo in 2010. Nissan broke the pattern in 2011 when its electric Leaf won the award, but Volkswagen returned to the podium in 2012 with its tiny Up hatch. Speaking after the announce-

ment of the winners at the New York motor show, Volkswagen AG chairman Martin Winterkorn said he was delighted the Golf had won the award for a second time. “To win this award again shows that the Golf is and remains in a class of its own all around the world,” he said. “This car sets new benchmarks again and again, not least in terms of efficiency and environmental credentials.” The sleek Jaguar F-Type convertible beat out the Mazda6 and Aston Martin Vanquish for the World Car Design of the Year Award, while the Tesla Model S electric sports saloon was the top pick for World Green Car, pipping

the Renault Zoe and Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid wagon. World Performance Car came down to the Porsche Boxster/Cayman, Ferrari F12 Berlinetta and Toyota 86/ Subaru BRZ, with the Bahnstorming Porsche twins winning the judges over. This year marks the ninth year the awards have been held with previous winners including the BMW 3 Series in 2006, Lexus LS460 in 2007 and the Mazda2 in 2008. Finalists are selected by a panel of 66 automotive journalists from 23 countries, including two from Australia. Tim Nicholson © GoAutoMedia, 2013

Ford plugs Ranger line-up Ford Australia has plugged an important hole in its Ranger ute line-up, releasing a mid-specification model aimed at private and small business buyers. The $48,090 Ranger XLS bridges the entry-level $44,390 XL twin cab featuring the 3.2-litre turbo diesel four-cylinder engine and the more richly equipped $55,390 XLT. The four-door XL and XLT models have been the Ranger’s best sellers since the Australian-penned ute’s launch in late 2011.

“We’re excited to be able to offer the XLS to our customers, many of whom have been asking for a mid-range model between the XL and XLT,” said Ford Australia marketing general manager David Katic. While not as richly equipped as the XLT, the new midspec model includes the same 147kW engine pushing out a beefy 470Nm of torque. Extra equipment over the base XL includes 16-inch alloy wheels, fog-lights, silvercoloured grille, body-coloured side mirror surrounds, carpet instead of rubber floor mats, and a locking rear differential

replacing the XL’s open diff using the Ranger’s anti-lock brakes to prevent wheelspin. Standard equipment includes a Bluetooth phone connection, cruise control, locking tailgate, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, six airbags, a six-speed manual transmission, and a 3500kg tow rating. Ford says the new model expands the number of variants in the ranger line-up to 22. The Ranger also joins a growing list of five-star crashrated trade utes entering the Australian market. New Torana hope

GO WITH THE FLOW: Nissan’s two-year-old Esflow concept car could surface as the next Silvia.

G

eneral Motors has reignited hope that it could produce a compact rear-drive coupe based on the Chevrolet Code 130R concept unveiled at the 2012 Detroit motor show.

GM executive chief engineer for luxury and rear wheel drive cars David Leone revealed ‘there is hope’ a car based on the 130R could reach production. “I think there’s opportunity there – it’s just not ready for prime-time yet,” he said, adding that GM continues to study the possibility of a production Code 130R. The concept’s reappearance at the recent Bangkok motor show – still wearing what looks like Holden’s Perfect Blue paintwork as it did at the 2012 Paris show – demonstrates GM’s continued assessment of public reaction. “It really appealed to the younger folks,” Mr Leone said. “That wasn’t lost on us and we see that opportunity in a place where we could expand the brand.” At the time of its unveiling in January last year, speculation was rife that the Code

FAMILIAR HUE: Chevrolet has repainted the Code 130R coupe concept from its original red to a hue reminiscent of Holden’s Perfect Blue, used on some Australian-built performance models.

130R – based on GM’s global Alpha rear-drive platform shared with the Cadillac ATS – could form the basis of a reborn Holden Torana. In an interview with Wheels last year, Holden-based GM executive director of international operations Mike Simcoe expressed enthusiasm for the Code 130R and was amenable to it reviving the Torana nameplate.

coupe offensive, the other being the sleeker, front-drive Tru 140S shown alongside at both Detroit and Bangkok. Of the two, Mr Leone believed the rear-drive Code 130R ‘has greater opportunity to expand the brand’. “We have good-looking coupes today but this I think would take us to another level,” he said.

“Would I like to have a compact rear-wheel-drive performance coupe like that in any portfolio? Yes, in essence it’s doing the same thing Torana did all those years ago.”

Mr Leone agreed a production Code 130R would provide GM with an ideal product to take advantage of the growing downsizing trend towards compact premium vehicles.

Nissan confirms sub-370Z sport Nissan has confirmed its intentions to revive a Silvia/200SX-style sports car in time for November’s Tokyo motor show. Previewed more than two years ago as the Esflow Concept, the vehicle in question will preview the company’s latest electrification technology, wrapped up in a swoopy sports car body. While Nissan says the finished product intends to slip beneath the current 370Z in terms of size and price, it is unknown whether the upcoming show vehicle will be yet another concept flight of fancy, or the first showing of a finished production model.

Whatever the case, an electric Le Mans racing car will follow the Tokyo exercise in June next year in an attempt to underline how serious Nissan is about its commitment to electrification as well as performance. A GT-R version with petrolelectric hybridisation is also expected soon after. Speaking to the Australian media at the New York International Auto Show late last month, Nissan’s executive vice-president, Andy Palmer, revealed his company’s plans to spread its sports car offerings beyond the 370Z and GT-R. “When we say that we are

going to go to Le Mans, which we will in 2014 with an electric sports car, it implies an interest in electrification of a sports car,” he said. “And we’ve implied that there will be electrification of the GT-R sometime in the near future. “But we’ve got some other plans for what we think sports cars for Gen Xs and Gen Ys would look like, and I think that the Zed – 370Z – will sit apart as a classic sports car. “We think that there is room below that for something very special. And for that we will see you at Tokyo.” Byron Mathioudakis © GoAutoMedia, 2013

Subaru finishes Outback puzzle S

ubaru Australia projects an appreciable sales jump for its Outback all-wheel-drive crossover following the addition of a $2500 CVT automatic diesel option.

The company has made efforts to remove clatter by adding sounddeadening insulation to the front under-cover or upper front guards. Both CVT variants get standard safety equipment such as seven airbags, front fog lights, reversing camera, child-seat anchor points and a five-star ANCAP crash rating.

With the lion’s share of the Outback’s rivals sold in Australia comprising diesel/automatic powertrains, the belated addition is seen by Subaru as ‘the final piece of the puzzle’ for the car here, which was launched in current-generation guise in September 2009. The Outback 2.0D CVT is available in both regular and Premium specification levels, priced at $42,490 plus on-road costs and $45,490 respectively – $2500 more than the manual.

Rivals As ever, the Subaru stalwart continues to be pitched against taller, family oriented rivals such as the Kia Sorento and Ford Territory, as well as conceptually similar high-riding wagons such as the Volkswagen Passat Alltrack. The continuously variable transmission is similar to the unit fitted to the smaller Forester compact SUV, and also features a seven-speed manual mode with paddles. Power comes from the same 110kW/350Nm 2.0-litre Boxer engine as the regular Outback D, which

Standard interior features include Bluetooth, dual-zone climate control, an electric parking brake, satellite navigation with voice control, iPod and USB connections, a leather steering wheel with audio and cruise control buttons and 60/40 split-fold rear seats.

THE ONE THEY’VE WAITED FOR: Subaru expects Outback sales to increase from around 220 units per month in the early part of this year to 350, thanks to the addition of a diesel/automatic drivetrain.

until now has been available only with a six-speed manual gearbox. Subaru continues to offer two boxer petrol Outback options – a 2.5-litre four-cylinder and a 3.6-litre sixcylinder. Fuel consumption for the CVT diesel is half-a-litre per 100km higher than the manual, at a claimed 6.5L/100km on the combined cycle – emissions of 172 grams of CO2 per km. Towing capacity is the same as the manual, however, at 1700kg. Subaru Australia managing director Nick Senior said the new addition would allow the Outback to at last compete in the largest section of the

Extras local large SUV sales race – industry bible VFACTS classifies the Outback as a ‘large SUV’.

While Mr Senior said the company was after buyers in both urban and country areas alike, the large rural focus is evident, with stock and station agents cited among several targets.

“The Outback diesel CVT plugs a gap in our model line-up,” he said. “A significant proportion of large SUV sales are automatic diesels and we have not played in this space.

Along with the new transmission, Subaru has tweaked the front suspension to counteract the extra weight of the automatic, which it says irons out any potential for “front-heavy” dynamics.

“In some months, the manual diesel has accounted for up to 20 percent of Outback sales, so pent-up demand for the auto is likely to see our diesel success story soar even higher.”

Subaru has also “fined-tuned” the electronic power steering to make it sharper on centre than the manual by putting harder mounts on the steering box.

As such, Subaru Australia expects sales of its five-door crossover staple to jump from the average of 220 units per month so far this year to around
