On your marks Collingwood fans. A Collingwood guernsey signed by this year’s Magpies playing group and a football signed by unique collection of football personalities is up for grabs. Laharum duo Kane Parish, left, and Keegan Mason display the items that will go to auction to raise money for Wimmera health services. Laharum, which will sell off the items at its goods and services auction on Saturday night, is among several regional football-netball clubs taking part in the Foundation Football Fundraising Fortnight. Clubs have organised a variety of fund-raising activities for either this Saturday or Saturday week for Wimmera Health Care Group Foundation. Collingwood president Eddie McGuire, former Sydney and Western Bulldogs coach and Hawthorn premiership player Rodney Eade, Collingwood goalkicking legend Peter McKenna and Footscray games record-holder Doug Hawkins have signed the football. Dimboola, Horsham Saints, Nhill, Minyip-Murtoa, Harrow-Balmoral, Taylors Lake and Rupanyup clubs have organised activities for this Saturday and Horsham, Kalkee, Natimuk, Edenhope-Apsley and Pimpinio clubs plan similar events next week Picture: MICK SHANNON

MONEY IN MUD: The Wimmera has had a soaking, prompting grains industry leaders to contemplate a good season. The picture shows water at Kalkee north of Horsham after last weekend’s rain. Picture: MICK SHANNON
Farmers optimistic in downpour’s potential By DEAN LAWSON

Victorian farmers leader believes widespread rain has left the state’s grain growers with a sense of cautious optimism about crop potential this season. Victorian Farmers Federation grains group president Brett Hosking of Quambatook said the amount of rain last weekend varied across the state and many growers were looking for more. He said apart from isolated grain-growing pockets in the west Wimmera where the country was already ‘wet’, a lot of broadacre farming country was still building up subsoil moisture. “Although not all areas got
it the rain was good to see and everyone is pleased,” he said. “In many cases the crops are healthy enough but have been late germinating. We’re counting on this being one of many rains leading into spring.” Weekend rain figures across the Wimmera-Mallee ranged between 15 millimetres in the northern Mallee to 50mm in the central and southern Wimmera. Mr Hosking said spring weather would be the major determining factor in what happened with many crops this season. “Many farmers had such a dry start with little or no subsoil moisture and spring is going to be a real test. In saying that, a lot of crops are looking good and it would be

fair to say the overall mood among growers is optimistic. But we’re all realists and things can go pear-shaped very quickly,” he said. “It is so hard to predict this far out and the hope is to get an average season.”
Looking good Grain Producers Australia, the Australian grains industry’s peak body, is following the season closely. Chairman Andrew Weidemann of Rupanyup said the Wimmera grain belt was now shaping for a better-than-average year. “The rain has come at the right time of the year and hopefully there is more this week. It has certainly given people a high level of confidence in the season,” he said.
“If we can get between 280 and 300 millimetres in the growing season the Wimmera will produce a pretty good, above-average crop. From May 18 we’ve already had about 140mm so we’re halfway there. Considering the long-term seasonal weather forecast, spring is also looking good.”

Mr Weidemann said heavy rain had boosted crop expectations through SA and Victoria. “Areas of WA have also had a couple of inches which was significant for them because they were going backwards and the northern part of NSW is still quite dry. But for SA and Victoria the rain continues to shape the season in a positive fashion,” he said.

$10-million project to develop a purposebuilt sub-acute and rehabilitation health unit in Horsham is on schedule to be finished by the end of January next year.
Contractors have completed earth, compaction and serviceconnection works and been finalising foundations for the erection of pre-cast concrete panel walls. Wimmera Health Care Group finance and corporate services director Mark Knight said he expected walls for the Reid Street sub-acute unit to go up in the next couple of weeks. “People are going to see some activity on the site in the next few weeks with a lot of heavy equipment being used to install the walls,” he said. “We’ve had some minor delays with rain in the last month
but we expect to catch that up and stay on schedule. It is progressing smoothly, there is a good relationship between the department of health, builder, principal architect and the health service.” The unit, next to health-care group’s main acute facility, will feature 20 sub-acute, 16 geriatric evaluation and rehabilitation and four transitioncare beds.
Jobs The new facility will mean the health group will employ an additional 22 full-time jobs, taking staff levels to more than 800, in positions ranging from environmental service roles to clinical, nursing and medical staff. Mr Knight said the unit would dramatically improve rehabilitation services in the Wimmera. “It will be a big plus in what

Wimmera Health Care Group can offer in Horsham. It will allow for a patient flow from acute to sub-acute conditions. It will allow people who undergo procedural work to recover in a purpose-built area,” he said.
“It is probably the biggest change the organisation has seen from a services perspective since the construction of Kurrajong Lodge.” Mr Knight said unit development represented a consolidating process underlining Wimmera Health Care Group’s position as the major health-service provider in the Wimmera-southern Mallee.

Youth and experience make the best team
EDITORIAL By DEAN LAWSON
H
ands up if you are a sports enthusiast and have used that age-old but delightful throwaway cliche ‘blend of youth and experience’ when describing a team.
The explanation provides everyone with an immediate understanding of the subject. In essence, it describes a team involving a good mix of seasoned campaigners and emerging juniors. It is usually the formula for success in many sporting environments. But the truth is, we can apply the concept in general terms to a healthy and successful society.
If it is true that ‘nothing beats experience’, it is equally as true that ‘nothing beats youthful exuberance’. Bring them together and you have something quite formidable. The key is identifying and harnessing the qualities of both, whether it be for sport, work or community. We’ve seen a couple of prime examples of young people emerging on the national stage in the last couple of weeks. One was playing cricket for Australia and another, right under our regional nose from Ararat, making a name for himself in the world of automotive trade skills. Ashton Agar’s debut performance for Australia in the Ashes series and Tim Taylor’s gold-medal win at WorldSkills

championships in Germany clearly show that we should never discount the potential of youth.
Catalyst Some of us might groan at the right angles that the popular culture of young people can turn, especially when it involves protocols, etiquette and codes of conduct. But invariably, the next generation always has something exciting, new or outstanding to offer. In any good ‘team’ this raw and willing asset has the potential to power through the surf or get caught in a rip. Of course that’s where the rudder of experience comes into play to provide direction and harness the power of our emerging brightest and best.
We should always celebrate and promote the achievements of our children and young adults regardless of how large or small. The encouragement might be the catalyst for something great in the future.
Linda Graham of Rupanyup will celebrate her 101st birthday on Sunday. Miss Graham, who lives by herself, does her own shopping and cooking and looks after her own garden plans to celebrate her birthday privately.

The work of Murtoa’s Lyn McIntyre and 24 other national quilt competition finalists will be on show at Melbourne Exhibition Centre between July 25 and 28. Mrs McIntyre’s three-part quilt, called From Dreamtime to Peak Hour and finalist in the Australian Quilt Convention Challenge, will feature in the Australian Craft and Quilt Fair.
QUILT LINE: The work of Murtoa’s Lyn McIntyre will be among other national quilt competition finalists on show at Melbourne Exhibition Centre this month.
The challenge, the most prestigious quilting competition in the county, attracts hundreds of entries from across Australia. Organisers of the four-day Melbourne fair expect about 40,000 people to attend the event. It is the third time in four attempts that Mrs McIntyre’s work has made the national quilt finals. This year, with the theme ‘free’, she created a quilt with a progressive message. It showed how people had gone from being free and part of the natural landscape to being consumed by an evolving urbanised landscape and having less freedom. “There has been a lot of different interpretations of the work. It took me about a month to come up with the concept and another month to make,” she said. Judges announced a winner and finalists

and now I prefer more artistic works,” she said. She revealed that she had already started on next year’s entry after discovering the 2014 theme was ‘10’. “I can’t give too much away but this one will be based on a holiday experience,” she said.

very now and then, I have nightmares of sitting for an exam, unprepared and totally petrified at the sight of the question paper. Of course I wake up with a start and reassure myself that my dreadful exam years are in the past.
I wonder if it is just me or every other person with an exposure to the Indian education system that is plagued by such recurring nightmares throughout their lives. Exams, entrance tests and high scores have been the bane of not just my childhood but most students and even parents too from middle-class families in India.

The mind-numbing pressure to excel academically has been drilled into us at such an impressionable age that education in the end is all about grades and very little to do with seeking knowledge.

That’s how I think most children and their parents must feel once they have been through the merciless grind of the Indian education system. Given the cut-throat competition for limited slots to quality education and professional jobs, there is little one can do differently.

Even though it is second nature for most Indian families to push their children with additional home coaching and tuition, I decided to stick to my decision; however tempting it was to emulate other parents. I was thrilled that the Australian education system encouraged independent thinking and practical knowledge and still believed in a childhood not weighed down by excessive homework. Mostly I am content to allow the children to progress academically as per the school’s curriculum. Occasionally I feel a twinge of guilt at my easy parenthood, especially when I come across my child’s appalling spelling or grammar and around national assessment testing at school. Perhaps the children need some extra help at home but I have pacified myself that academic excellence did not wing me any extra perks. From my own experience, being on an Honours list or winning scholarships seem to be

empty accomplishments in the long run. At times, it is pointless to have put in all such efforts in striving excellence at academics and having little to show for it in terms of a career or financial benefits. So I have learned to quell any voices in me urging otherwise and conditioned myself to breeze through my children’s education. But lately I have been asking myself if I am doing the right thing. I would normally not let such incidents sway my decision but in observing teenagers manning sales registers and struggling with simple math calculations, I wonder if parents can afford to stay passive observers. The other day at a major chain store, I found three junior sales assistants struggling to do a simple 30 percent discount calculation – because they had no access to a calculator. Nobody resorted to using mental arithmetic or even simple paper and pen to do the math. One was even amazed at my mental capacity to do sums that I did a double take and started questioning my own mathematical aptitude and the complexity of the calculation in question. Given the intrusion of technology everywhere, children today rely more on ‘spell check’ and calculators that they seem to struggle even with the simplest of calculations and spellings. Perhaps it is time for parents like me to invest time and effort into their children’s studies and not simply relinquish responsibility. Gonski or no Gonski, it becomes essential for parents to work alongside schools towards a solid foundation of knowledge and skills for everyday life without the aid of technology crutches. Perhaps that way we would instil healthy appreciation for technology rather than blind reliance.

Target carpark resurfacing works As part of the final stage of the High Street Redevelopment Project, Council contractors will be undertaking resurfacing works in the Target car park between July 22 and August 16, 2013. These dates allow sufficient time to carry out pavement stabilising, resurfacing and linemarking works to further enhance the High Street precinct. As usual, timeframes are subject to climate conditions and any wet or inclement weather may result in these dates being extended. For the greater part of the project limited car parking will still be available within the Target car park area, however Council encourages the general public to seek alternative car parking options such as Elizabeth Park during this time. Local businesses within the Target car park precinct will be receive formal notification via mail or personal contact from a Council officer well in advance of the project dates.

The result is a Council Plan that genuinely reflects the aspirations and values of its community. Council would like to thank the many residents who contributed to these important documents.

Insurance for pets
However, as many pet owners are well aware, veterinary treatment can be expensive and the last few weeks have cost Lola’s owners many thousands of dollars.
T
his week at the clinic I was happy to see a patient of mine who has been spending a lot of time with us recently. Her name is Lola and she is a much-loved young cat. Lola is doing really well now, but a few weeks ago we weren’t so sure that she was going to pull through. Despite being healthy throughout her life, Lola suddenly began to have severe, frequent seizures and became very unwell. Her condition deteriorated so much that she spent several days at a 24-hour veterinary emergency hospital, and also saw an internal medicine specialist about her illness. After many tests, a lot of treatment, and ongoing medication, Lola is now almost normal again, and we hope that she will continue to do well. There’s no question that without all of the treatment she received, Lola would not be with us today.
Southern Grampians Shire Council has two dogs available for adoption from its Hamilton pound. The dogs are both female Ridgeback-cross breeds, around 10 months old. ‘Kida’ is light tan in colour and ‘Koda’ is tan with a dark muzzle.
While they don’t begrudge a penny in saving their beloved pet, they are the first to admit that if they hadn’t had pet insurance, they simply would not have been able to afford the life-saving treatment Lola received.
Worthwhile
panies will have more than one type of policy. So it’s a good idea for owners to do their research and find the policy that suits them best. Some factors that they might want to consider, however, include: Most policies will have an age cut-off, after which even healthy pets can’t be insured for the first time, so it’s worth getting them insured early.
I often have pet owners ask me if I think that pet insurance is worthwhile. It can certainly seem expensive on the face of things.
Generally, pre-existing health conditions will not be covered, so when your pet becomes unwell, it’s too late to take out insurance for that problem.
Like any insurance policy, our dearest wish would be that we never have to make a claim and recoup any outlay, as that would mean that our pets have stayed healthy throughout their lives.
Some dog breeds, such as English bulldogs or pugs, which are known to be prone to certain health problems, might attract a higher premium or might have conditions attached to their policy.
However, Lola’s case illustrates that despite the best of care from dedicated owners, even young, healthy animals can have severe, unexpected illnesses or injuries.
Some policies will contribute to routine care, such as vaccinations and desexing, whereas others only cover illness and injury.
Pet insurance means owners can rest assured that should those situations arise, their pets will be able to receive the very best care available. There are a number of different companies offering pet insurance these days and many of these com-

Artefacts given to land council

B
arengi Gadjin Land Council has welcomed Aboriginal artefacts that Wimmera people have handed to the organisation.
In March the land council called for Wimmera farmers and landowners to report any artefacts and sites they had found on their land The response has led to the donation of artefacts such as grinding stones and an axe. John Francis of Horsham donated grinding stones collected over a lifetime on his family’s property. He said the artefacts came from land along the Wimmera River and Yarriambiack Creek and sand hills at Dooen. “Mine had been sitting in a box for years.I decided it was best to give them back to the traditional owners,” he said. Mr Francis said the link between the artefacts and Indigenous people in the Wimmera were strong. “The last person to handle these items were probably relatives of the Barengi Gadjin people,’’ he said. Aboriginal sites and artefacts include shell middens, scatters of stone artefacts, oven mounds, rock art sites, scar trees, stone arrangements and places of burial. The land council is keen to work with Wimmera land owners to preserve Australian history and plans to show-

case regional artefacts in a museum.
Nhill Clive Crouch of Nhill also handed in Aboriginal artefacts which included a volcanic stone axe and several grinding stones. “It’s important to protect Aboriginal artefacts because there is so much culture, knowledge and heritage in the Wimmera that most people don’t know about,’’ he said. Land council acting chief executive Michael Stewart said Aboriginal heritage sites in the Wimmera were usually near rivers, lakes and swamps.
“We are aware of some sites in the region but the land council has only a limited amount of artefacts because many have been removed or destroyed,’’ he said. Mr Stewart reassured landowners that the land council had no authority or interest in claiming land or obstructing work on properties. He said if people found or had an Aboriginal artefact on their land, they should avoid disturbing the site, take note of the location and any potential threats, write a description or take photos and report it by calling 5381 0977.
Nhill weekend to stimulate business Preparations are in full swing for a Nhill Open Weekend later this year, a project designed to encourage new business owners to the town. The October 12 and 13 weekend is designed to encourage investment in the west Wimmera centre and find replacements for several Nhill business owners who are ready to retire and selling their businesses. The weekend will provide an opportunity to give interested people a chance to experience Nhill and its community for themselves.
Business Advisers, Tax Agents & Financial Planners
Nhill Alive with Business Opportunity Steer-
ing Committee chairman Alex Graham said the Open Weekend would feature guided tours that showcased businesses and houses for sale, modern health, education and sporting facilities and the many opportunities for ‘a rewarding lifestyle’. He said visitors would get to know Nhill’s ‘welcoming community, experience the town’s prosperous business environment and enjoy the Hindmarsh Shire’s relaxed lifestyle’. “We decided to hold an Open Weekend so that people can come and see first-hand that Nhill is alive with opportunity,” he said.

Australia’s economy on the world stage
W
ith a relatively small population by world standards, Australia’s economy is more than holding its own against the big players. How did we get to this point and what does it mean?
A country’s economy can be measured by its gross domestic product. That is, the market value of all officially recognised final goods and services produced within a specified time frame. Given this, the fact that Australia’s economy now ranks as the 13th largest in the world is something of an achievement. Narrow the field to the Asia-Pacific region and we rank an impressive third. The world’s largest economies are China, Japan and the United States, which also happen to be our three most important trading partners. This demonstrates the obvious respect in which we are held, and is supported by the World Economic Forum which ranks Australia’s financial development fifth out of the 57 world market leaders. Australia’s economy sprung from our rich natural resource deposits. From the

pany by market capitalisation. Australian trade movements can be compared with other world indices. For example, we can evaluate our trade movements against the United States by comparison with its index – the Dow Jones.
Other industries contributing to our strong global position are manufacturing – nine percent, and construction – eight percent.
With Australia’s market valued in trillions of dollars, it’s neither alarming nor unusual for the All Ordinaries to gain or lose billions of dollars in a single day’s trade. Remember this the next time you see headlines screaming ‘billion dollar losses’.
Interestingly, Australia’s financial services industry adds 11 percent to our economy. This is largely attributable to our compulsory superannuation regime. Australia’s pooled funds under management are the largest in the Asia-Pacific region and fourth largest in the world. Australia represents an attractive location for many major international investment organisations because of our healthy economic environment. In addition, our banking and financial industry regulatory and compliance structures are the envy of many countries. In Australia, international trading is measured by an index known as the All Ordinaries index which comprises around 500 of Australia’s largest com-

Given Australia’s economic strength, some people wonder why financial advisers often recommend international investments. This is because world economies constantly move up or down against each other and these movements can potentially yield significant gains when balance and timing fall into place.

March target date for Nhill aviation centre By DEAN LAWSON
V
olunteers working to capture the aviation history of Nhill hope to officially open Nhill Aviation Heritage Centre at the end of March next year.
Work is progressing on the new centre at Nhill aerodrome which will reflect the west Wimmera centre’s rich contribution to flying in Australia. It will primarily become home a restored 1936 Avro. Anson aircraft in the process of coming back to life at the hands of Nhill district engineering enthusiasts.

Nhill Aviation Heritage Centre president Rob Lynch said the wettest June on record in Nhill had delayed construction but the project was ‘back on track’.

“The walls and roof have been going up and likely to be completed this week and of course we’ve been waiting for the right time for the concrete pad to go down,” he said.

A $50,000 gift from an anonymous donor, $355,000 in grant money from the State Government’s Regional Growth Fund, support from Ahrens, building the centre at cost, and hours of voluntary work are making the new centre happen.

The new building will have 750 square metres of floor space, enough to provide a new home for the many historical aviation items that people are donating to the centre. Centre secretary Joan Bennett said the project, building towards Centenary of Aviation in Nhill celebrations in 2019, continued to have strong community backing. “It’s important that the community has been right behind this. We’re also developing a
heritage walk at Nhill aerodrome which we hope will be complete for next year’s opening,” she said. Mrs Bennett, in praising the ‘above and beyond’ efforts of project volunteers, added that Bob Ahrens’ contribution to the project had also been significant. Nhill aerodrome was a Royal Australian Air Force training base for navigators, bombers and gunnery servicemen during the Second World War.
Thousands of RAAF personnel spent time at the base, completing training bombing runs across the Little Desert and learning to fly by the stars at night. A group of enthusiasts keen to preserve and promote the town’s aviation history formed Nhill Aviation Heritage Centre in 2008 and was soon restoring an Avro Anson, the aircraft synonymous with the training program.

“The plantouts have a great reputation for providing plenty of delicious food, but this year we wanted to treat the volunteers to something really special. “By participating, volunteers can enjoy great food, enjoy the winter weather and feel good knowing that by planting trees, they’re helping the local environment.”
Project Platypus is one of three regional Landcare organisations preparing for landscape-scale community planting weekends this winter.
Deidre Baum will provide morning and afternoon tea as well as lunch and dinner.
The annual events involve volunteers revegetating target areas with thousands of indigenous plants.

NBN Co is planning to deliver a high-speed fixed wireless broadband service to the Rupanyup community. More broadly, NBN Co is planning to acquire and build fixed wireless facilities across the Yarriambiack local government area to deliver high-speed broadband services to homes and businesses in Beulah, Galaquil, Hopetoun, Minyip, Murtoa, Rupanyup and Warracknabeal.
Horsham Government Primary Schools:
Other areas in the Yarriambiack local government area will receive either fibre or satellite services depending on where they are located.
298 Campus - 5382 1534 Rasmussen Campus - 5382 3200 Horsham West Campus - 5382 1285 Haven Campus - 5382 1285
The Federal Government has set a target for NBN Co to connect 93 per cent (with a minimum obligation of 90 per cent) of Australian homes and businesses to fibre-to-the-premises technology. To reach all homes and businesses in our vast country, fixed wireless and satellite services will be used for the remaining parts of Australia including certain areas in the Yarriambiack local government area, including Rupanyup. Fixed wireless and satellite services represent a significant improvement to services currently available to many Australians living in rural, regional and remote communities.
What is fixed wireless technology? NBN’s fixed wireless network, which uses advanced technology commonly referred to as LTE or 4G, is engineered to deliver services to a fixed number of premises within a coverage area. This means that the bandwidth per household is designed to be more consistent, even in peak times of use. The network will use cellular technology to transmit radio signals to and from a small antenna fixed on the outside of a home or business, which is pointed directly towards the fixed wireless facility.
Consultation and town planning requirements NBN Co works in consultation with local councils to determine an efficient and effective way to rollout the fixed wireless network. A key consideration in these decisions is the design of the network, which takes a number of factors into account including population density, geography, radio frequency and other network specific considerations. Wherever possible NBN Co looks actively to use existing infrastructure when planning the fixed wireless network before proposing new structures.
Community Information Session 29th July 2013 NBN Co is hosting a Community Information Session on Monday 29th July 2013 at the Rupanyup Recreation Reserve, Gibson Street, Rupanyup. If you would like to find out more about the NBN fixed wireless network, please drop in at any time between 3pm and 6pm to see the information display and to talk to NBN Co representatives.

Orientaped sticks out After balancing up and boxing on strongly Orientaped scored a tough all the way victory by three lengths on the post. The fast-finishing Darren Weir gelding Oak Heart was unable to bridge the gap, running a gallant second.
W
arrnambool father-son training duo Brenton and Mark Primmer have been enjoying good success with their rejuvenated galloper Orientaped.
The Shipwreck Coast stable was looking to add the Warracknabeal Cup to their trophy cabinet to accompany the Heywood Cup won by the seven-year-old a week earlier. Once again gun Swan Hill apprentice jockey Harry Coffey was aboard for the 2000-metre Wimmera feature with Orientaped well supported by winter racegoers with odds of 6-1 offered by local bookies. Once the race was underway young Coffey rolled forward into the leading position with Oreintaped racing keenly. The top Mallee jockey was soon able to get the brown gelding to settle, freewheeling and running the race to suit himself with no early challenges from any rivals. Approaching the 600m marker, the son of American shuttle stallion Orientate, gave a strong kick and rounding the home turn found himself three lengths in front.
Orientaped’s win would have been a highlight for co-trainer Brenton Primmer who was a promising jockey before his riding career was tragically cut short by a race fall at Warrnambool six years ago. Since recovering from his injuries he has formed a strong training partnership with his father Mark and the Primmer team deserve all the success that come their way.
Miss Joolia a big hit The unofficial mayor of Telopea Downs Darryl Dodson’s phenomenal season is continuing at a rapid rate. Dodson’s latest victory came at Monday’s Mildura meeting with restricted sprint galloper Miss Joolia. The Kaniva stable had the filly engaged in a 1000m scamper carrying a prize purse of $15,000. Multiple Horsham Cup-winning jockey Holly McKechnie was in the saddle and the pair looked to be a strong chance to figure prominently in the race after an eye-catching Bordertown second placing at the three-year-old’s last start. Once the starting stalls opened Miss Joolia was ridden aggressively to take up a prominent position behind the leading
Al angles to win
horses. Approaching the 600m marker the daughter of Eliza Park resident stallion Magnus was looming large with her Horsham hoop angling out into clear galloping room. After rounding the home turn and responding well to McKechnie’s urgings Miss Joolia finished on strongly to fly over the top of her rivals and score a length and a half victory at the judge. The win was Miss Joolia’s second career victory and first since joining the Dodson stable after previously racing for Mornington-based trainer Shane Nicholls. This filly looks to have found her niche in the country environment of Dodson’s stables and future wins in the limestone coast region would not come as a surprise.
In brief • Former Glenisla trainer Barb Marshman won with her galloper Allaboutharry at Mildura. • Jockey Dean Yendall booted home two winners in successive days at Warracknabeal and Mildura Saintly Therese and Seal No More for trainers Darren Weir and Mark Young respectively. • Holly Mckechnie wins aboard Work Before Play on Warracknabeal cup day for Mt Gambier trainer Lee Creek. • Josh Mackay delivers the late mail on thoroughbred racing each Saturday morning from 9am on 1089 3WM.
Al Vanstan scored a clear win for Horsham Angling Club’s senior fisherman of fishermen award. Vanstan polled 280 points to win from Kevin Budde 249, David Isaacson 201 and Gary Anson 178. Vanstan’s son Curtis won a junior fisherman of fishermen title with 145 points to win from Trent Shiells 96 and Nicholas Shiells 88. Award presentations wound up the club’s angling season. Cats eye fourth place MALLEE FOOTBALL LEAGUE
S
By MICK SHANNON
ea Lake-Nandaly Tigers managed to hold off a determined Woomelang-Lascelles outfit by 11 points in round 14 of Mallee Football League.
Tigers full forward Cliff Ryan proved to be the difference, kicking six goals in difficult conditions. In other games Walpeup-Underbool claimed a 15-point win over Ouyen United while Beulah had a comfortable sixgoal victory over Hopetoun. Another three big games of footy that will play a big part in how the ladder ends up come the finish of the season will unfold in the Mallee this week Woomelang-Lascelles will be looking to overtake Ouyen United in fourth position when it travels to Hopetoun to take on the Devils. The Cats produced a good game against the Tigers last round but just fell short at the final siren. Hopetoun played good footy against Beulah and will take a lot of confidence out of how it finished off the game. Joel Donnan has been in good form over the last month for Woomelang-Lascelles and will have the big job of keeping Hopetoun centre half forward Luke Carr
quiet. Carr has been in terrific form all season and produced another great game last round. Young gun Zac Robins has been controlling the backline well for Hopetoun while Cade Wellington continues to work hard to find the ball through the midfield. They will need to have big games to ensure they quell the influence of midfield-forward Corey Kelly and smooth mover Trent Donnan. This will be a tough and exciting game with both teams playing quality football over the last few rounds. WoomelangLascelles will prove to be more desperate for the win and grab victory by 12 points.
Merry way Sea Lake-Nandaly Tigers will continue on their merry way when they defeat Ouyen United at Ouyen. The Devils got close to 2012 premier Walpeup-Underbool last round but the skill and class of the Tigers outfit will prove to be too strong. Luke Martin has found good form for the Tigers, using his speed and agility to break the lines from the defensive half while Jason Collins, Wes Harrison and Cliff Ryan form a potent forward line. The Demons will look to youngsters Alex Morrish, Josh Langdon and Tim Weir to play strong games while they will be hoping speedster Jerry Wilson can kick another bag of goals.
Ouyen United will hit hard as it does every week, but the Tigers will be too good and win by 40 points.
Lakers Jeparit-Rainbow welcomes WalpeupUnderbool to Rainbow Recreation Reserve. Although the ladder would suggest the Roos would claim an easy victory, the Lakers have been in good form in the last month and will give themselves every chance of rolling the visitors. Walpeup-Underbool had a hard slog against Ouyen United last round and might find it hard to get their running game going while Jeparit-Rainbow will be fresh after a bye. Big players Josh Charles and Chris Lynch stood up for the Roos last week and will again need to produce solid games to ensure they give first use of the ball to their talented on-ball brigade. Jeparit-Rainbow midfielders Heath Clugston, Chris Meyer and Elliot Bath have been leading the way for the Lakers and will work hard to take the advantage at the centre clearances to give opportunities to Ben Zanker and Andrew Watson up forward. This will be another hard-fought game and with the fresh legs the Lakers will snatch victory by 10 points in a huge upset. Beulah has the bye.

SPORT report
Rain or shine, Kalkee powers on reflects their their work.
HORSHAM DISTRICT FOOTBALL LEAGUE
R
The Lakers’ backline led by Luke Robertson and Brent Tough will again have a rugged day at the office and unless Dean Harberger, Aaron Lewis, Craig Britten and Jason Weir win plenty of possession through the centre corridor then another long day looms
By GRANT KUCHEL
ain and mud did nothing to halt Kalkee’s momentum in Horsham District Football League last week and as the Kees venture to Balmoral it is hard to see how anyone will prevent them from grabbing another premiership.
Pimpinio will want a dry track to help the likes of Darcy O’Connor, Dylan Arnott, Todd O’Connor and Brett Hamerston run the Lakers off their feet.
The Kees take on a deflated Harrow-Balmoral that now sits six points out of the five with little chance of closing the gap this week. Kalkee will again look to young Simon Hobbs and Oliver Young to feed off the stoppage work of Tim Wade, Paul Christian and Steve Schultz and break the lines with their speed. Harrow-Balmoral’s game is based around the bigger bodies of Dave Vickery, veteran Brent Penny and ball winners Brent Forsyth and Tim Cogger but with a young inconsistent list the Roos struggle to put a full game together. Kalkee’s big forwards in Josh Beddison and Adam Carter still had an impact on the scoreboard in wet conditions. So it won’t be easy for the Roos’ backline led by the experienced Ryan McClure and Chris Heath to stop them again having an influence on the contest. Barring major upsets elsewhere, the Roos are now only playing for pride in their remaining five games so they might throw caution to the wind and play with more freedom. But it’s hard to see them having the arsenal to match the depth and class of one of the premiership favourites.
Pressure There will be a simple equation at North Park in Stawell this week with both Natimuk and Swifts simply needing to keep winning. For Natimuk, it needs to keep winning to remain in the five. For the Baggies it is to keep pressure on third-placed Edenhope-Apsley because any slip up by the Saints might allow the Stawell outfit to snatch the double chance. As per the previous season, Swifts get better
Crucial game A wobbly Edenhope-Apsley makes the trek to Rupanyup knowing that anything less than a win will put the Saints under the pump to maintain third spot on the ladder . BUCKET LOADS: Kalkee onballer Steve Schultz kicked six of his side’s 68 goals in two clashes with Taylors Lake this season. The three-time Dellar Medal winner has 27 goals and has been a regular feature in Kalkee’s best players in his return to Horsham District Football League after two seasons with Wimmera Football League club Warrack Eagles. Picture: WILLAMY IMAGES
as the season goes on and the addition of Tom Ruggles to the side has added further depth. Combine that with Ricky Whitehead’s return to top form and it’s easy to see why the visiting Rams will need to be at their best. Natimuk will look to in-form backman Callum Cameron and strong-bodied Dylan Carroll to stand up again, especially if our run of wet Saturdays continues. Swifts will be wanting a bigger impact on the scoreboard from Jeremy Joiner. The key forward is yet to nail a big bag this year and if he hits form he will take goal-kicking pressure will be taken off the smaller forward. Cameron will probably go to Joiner so fans can expect an intriguing duel. Natimuk will probably send Tim Friend forward and if can kick a handful and get help from Dylan Wright, Ash Pekin and Shaun McDonald, the Rams will be in the game deep into the last quarter.
Unpredictable Safely entrenched with a double chance, Laharum will look to drive the dagger further into the finals aspirations of Noradjuha-Quantong at Laharum.
Noradjuha-Quantong has been the most unpredictable side all year and its hard seeing the Bombers toppling a Laharum side building momentum towards the finals. Laharum should welcome back Jason Przibilla and with Shannon Argall playing deep in attack, the Bombers’ backline led by Brady King and Lachlan Wilson will struggle to bring the ball ground. Noradjuha-Quantong will need to move the ball quickly forward through the likes of skilful Jason Kerr and Tyler Bye and give Shane Oakley, Jarred Combe and Sam Weddell a chance to weave some magic on the scoreboard. Both sides boast tough midfielders but consistency is the key and the reason Laharum sits second.
Opportunity Taylors Lake’s one and only chance of victory this season comes this week when it hosts Pimpinio. Alas for the Lakers, there is a big chasm between the sides and the visiting Tigers will be far too good. Sam Turmine, Dylan Baker and Cam Ellis will enjoy the ball spending a fair bit of time in their forward half and will make sure the scoreboard
Rupanyup needs to win to regain a rotating fifth spot on the ladder. Both sides are under pressure getting their best sides on the park. Rupanyup would love to have the Tyler brothers and Johnston back in the side while the Saints would love Matt Close, Matt Cranage and Charlie Stewart to be on the field. James Dixon seems to be the barometer for the Saints. When he kicks goals or features in the best the Saints tend to win. Opposition sides seem to be working it out that ‘stop Dixon stop Edenhope-Apsley’ and this must be of concern to the coaching panel. Rupanyup will again be led by the likes of Glenn Wyatt, Nathan Sachse and David Lang through the middle and with Scott Niewand and Scott Nicholson providing firepower up forward the Panthers will test Edenhope-Apsley side and see if they continue to be worthy of a top-three position.

Fight on for final five as top teams fail to fire MININERA DISTRICT FOOTBALL LEAGUE By JONATHAN BOX
As the Mininera and District Football League embarks on round 14 the race for the final five is still tight. Wickliffe-Lake Bolac and MoystonWillaura, the top two teams, have suffered losses in recent weeks to show that even top spot is up for grabs. This weekend Hawkesdale-Macarthur will travel to Lake Bolac to take on the Magpies.
Last week the Eagles fought through a muddy match to hold off SMW Rovers and take victory by four goals. The win moved Hawkesdale-Macarthur into fifth position.
Xavier McCartney and Danny Chatfield had no trouble in the wet, both finding the goals three times, while Andrew Bos, Ryan Lenehan and Shane Dowie provided plenty of work around the ground to help forwards.

on high alert that they were now flag favourites.
Christopher Hilet and Josh Keys were the major goal scorers for Wickliffe-Lake Bolac with three apiece. Charles Archer provided plenty of strength on half back and Michael Otto again provided plenty of run and ball-winning skill around the ground.
However after a recent visit from Penshurst they were set back down rather quickly as they conceded a 60-point loss.
Bounce back
Wickliffe-Lake Bolac last week found itself back on the winners list with a 19-point victory over Tatyoon.
Coming off a defeat, the MoystonWillaura Pumas will be looking to redeem themselves when they take on Tatyoon.
These teams were evenly matched up until half time with only two points the margin. However a domi-

The Pumas kicked only four goals with John Van Der Waal kicking two. Aaron Neil and Trent Fiscalini were best and were shining lights in an otherwise dismal day. Tatyoon played Wickliffe-Lake Bolac last week and kept up with the Magpies until half time but let their opponents slip away at the end. consistently throughout the season.
With Tatyoon sitting just outside the five no team in the league should be caught sleeping. When it comes to finals, Tatyoon has plenty of experience. Other games for the round see next-door neighbours Ararat and Great Western do battle at Alexandra Oval, Caramut hosts Lismore-Derrinallum, Penshurst will be looking for a top-three position when it plays Glenthompson-Dunkeld. SMW Rovers will try to keep their season alive as they clutch to their final hope when they take on Woorndoo-Mortlake which last week had its first victory for the season.

Tantalising equation for Eagles WIMMERA FOOTBALL LEAGUE
W
By DEAN LAWSON
arrack Eagles have an opportunity to finish Wimmera Football League’s season with a wet sail if they can pass their biggest test of the season on Saturday.
If the Eagles can do the unthinkable and upset Dimboola at Dimboola and then use the momentum to topple Minyip-Murtoa they can almost bank on a clean sweep of points for the remaining games in the home-andaway season. But boy, what an assignment they have this weekend to continue the momentum they established in a gutsy win over Horsham Saints. Dimboola, stung into action with a loss to Horsham, pinged off Nhill without too many hassles last week and will welcome any challenge the Eagles can muster this weekend. Tim Inkster’s Eagles have kept many fans guessing this season with just as many saying the outfit is a finals threat as there are saying they are off the money. It’s the type of analysis that a team
sitting safely in fifth spot with a season record showing six wins, four losses and a draw tends to attract.
Last week’s result obviously revealed plenty about the team’s character and potential to get across the line. It was, after all the Eagles’ first win against a team above them on the ladder this season. But there are probably fans, simply from studying scores from afar, who might doubt the legitimacy of the result considering the Saints had six more scoring shots than the winners. Such is the Eagles’ lot at the moment. Inkster’s demands for consistency from his group has been well documented but this week he simply needs his team to play out of its skin. Hard-working Ben Spicer obviously did well in last week’s win and if in the middle again will be working against a queue of relentless opponents. If there has been anything consistent about the Eagles this year then it must be the efforts of key-position player Peter Weir. He is constantly featuring in best-player lists and will again be important. Okay, the Eagles answered critics and were good in the clinches last week. But it is in the big-man department that they might struggle against
the Roos.
Peter MacFarlane slipped back into the Roos’ list last week, adding even more muscle to an already strong big-man department and kicked four goals. The visitors might simply lack the personnel to cover their fancied opponents. Still, the incentive is there for the Eagles. Upset the Roos and Burras and they will have a bye before finishing off the season against Horsham RSL, Ararat and Stawell.
Burras on song Third-placed Minyip-Murtoa is unlikely to be worried about the Eagles’ plans as they sweep Horsham RSL Diggers aside at Murtoa. The Burras kept Ararat to a solitary goal last week and might finally be realising its potential to do serious damage come finals. John Delahunty is shining in the mid-field traffic and Gus Trethowan and Jayden Beaumont are winning a generous share of clearances each week. Minyip-Murtoa will be too good for the Diggers but the Burras can’t afford to simply win – they need to crush the visitors to improve percentage and stay ahead of fourth-placed Horsham Saints. Injuries have crippled an already fragile Diggers list which is battling gamely against the odds and occasionally producing good patches of football. The Burras seem to be a mission and will be hard to stop. Horsham Saints would still be eyeing off the third place the Burras are holding and the finals double chance. But the Saints need to recapture the form that gave them such a whirlwind start to the season. Their loss last week might prove telling in the final wash-up but they at least should bounce back strongly against Ararat.

Opposition teams are now looking closely, not at the Saints’ top six players, but their bottom six and developing strategies to throw the crew from Coughlin Park off balance. The Saints have plenty of team

leaders providing examples but probably need more fringe players to step up to the plate. Ararat, meanwhile, is half a dozen players off being a good side and while okay defensively, struggles to capitalise on its hard-ball wins. A quick glance through the Ararat team list reveals a talented but relatively green group light on for muscle and experience. Ararat coach David Hosking would like to gain a bit more for his crew this season but might have to be content with Nhill being the best side outside the finals.
should win but not by much. Stawell copped it against a fired-up Horsham last week and must regroup for what is always a tough road trip. The game represents an opportunity for the Warriors to add a rebuilding element to the season.

The night involves three blokes reliving a great era of Australian footy that will be too funny to miss,” he said. If you haven’t been down to Lake Bolac Hotel for while well now is a good excuse to get down here. If you’re no fun, there is no entry.”
Capper was renowned for taking spectacular high marks, Jackson rates as one of the game’s best at combining talent and showmanship and Bosustow was a match-winner for Carlton. The show, which includes roast dinner starting at 6.30pm, is $50 a ticket. The show starts at 8.30pm. Mr Kuzmich said people keen to buy a ticket could call 5350 2303.

Ford set to display local ‘Vision’ F
ord Australia is preparing to stage a ‘Vision for Australia’ event in Sydney next month, that is expected to showcase key new imported and potentially locally designed and engineered models.
A redesigned bonnet and updated headlights add to the changes at the front end, while at the rear the Fiesta gains a spoiler and more detail in the tail lights.
Bringing the Fiesta even further into line with the Focus, Ford will offer as standard its hands-free Sync connectivity system that includes voice-activated access to mobile phones and Bluetooth phone and audio streaming.
The Ford Motor Company’s executive vice-president of global marketing, sales and service Jim Farley will host the event, and although Ford Australia is keeping details of the new models under wraps, new models soon to reach Australia include the facelifted Fiesta range – including the hot 134kW ST turbo, here in September – and the Indian-built EcoSport mini-SUV.
New engines The current engine line-up will be replaced by a pair of new engines, with Ford confirming it has dropped the 66kW 1.6-litre Duratorq diesel currently available on mid and topspec models due to slow sales.
Ranger As GoAuto has reported, an all-new Australian-engineered SUV based on the T6 Ranger is also nearing production and could make its world debut at the August 13 event, while Ford Australia has previously confirmed that the forthcoming reskinned Falcon large car was scheduled to be shown this year ahead of its launch in the third quarter of 2014. A similarly upgraded Australianbuilt Territory SUV and Falcon ute are due at the same time, following on the heels of other imported models including a redesigned Mondeo midsize range and a new Transit van. Ford Australia released preliminary
details for its updated Fiesta lightcar, which will be headlined by the ST hot-hatch when it arrives in September. The facelift will also spell the end of the diesel powertrain option, which is to be axed in favour of the frugal new 1.0-litre three-cylinder EcoBoost petrol engine from December. The ST will be the second performance model to join Ford’s local small and light-car car line-up, alongside its larger 184kW Focus ST
sibling launched locally last October.
manual gearbox.
Australian-spec Fiesta STs will be a three-door-only proposition as it is sourced from Europe, rather than North America where it is built in five-door guise.
When the new model arrives, Ford Australia will discontinue the Fiesta Metal warm-hatch that went on sale last September, making way for the more powerful ST to top the range.
The Fiesta ST is powered by a 1.6-litre turbocharged EcoBoost engine producing 132kW and 240Nm of torque – growing to 147kW and 290Nm with the overboost function engaged – which like the Focus ST is matched exclusively to a six-speed
The updated Fiesta gets a refreshed front-end design featuring the nowfamiliar Aston Martin-esque trapezoidal grille that also appears on the upcoming Mondeo/Fusion midsizer and is likely to show up on the facelifted Focus range due next year.

Mitsubishi cuts Challenger range M
itsubishi has axed the popular two-wheel-drive and seven-seat configurations from the Triton-based Challenger offroader range as part of a bid to simplify its line-up.
Challenger up by $1000 for both the five-speed manual and five-speed automatic, while the LS auto is $2000 dearer at $49,990.
Mitsubishi says a boost in equipment is the reason for the price rise, with the Challenger now available with a reversing camera and rear parking sensors as standard along with Mitsubishi’s ‘new generation’ audio system already featured in the ASX and Outlander SUVs and Lancer small car.
The company has also discontinued the flagship XLS variant, leaving a more condensed range consisting of a base variant and and the previously mid-spec but now flagship LS, with the latter now available with an automatic transmission only.
Touchscreen
The reduction in the number of configurations coincides with a facelift for remaining variants that brings a redesigned grille and bumpers, more interior features and price increases of up to $2000.
One less rival The loss of the seven-seat variant gives Mitsubishi one less rival for the likes of Holden’s ute-based Colorado 7 and the rugged, top-selling Toyota Prado. Mitsubishi’s other large SUV, the Pajero, will continue to be offered with seven seats on some variants and could absorb some sales, while the smaller Outlander compact SUV is also available with the option of a third row. The decision to drop the price-leading two-wheel-drive option, which was introduced in late 2011, comes

despite the fact it made up 25 percent of all Challenger sales in 2012, and 20 percent in the first five months of 2012. This consolidation of the Challenger line-up comes two weeks after Mitsubishi dumped the petrol variant from the Pajero line-up, leaving it a diesel-only proposition. Mitsubishi Motors Australia Limited corporate communications manager Caitlin Beale said Mitsubishi’s local arm was keen to focus on more

Outlander in the local line-up.
“We are trying to simplify our lineup and give more support to less vehicles,” she said. “We are concentrating on the volume products.”
“Between the Outlander and the Pajero, the Challenger was basically overlapping so we thought we don’t really need a Challenger seven-seat in the range.
The seven-seat Challenger made up 13 percent of overall Challenger sales in 2012, dropping to 11 percent to the end of May this year. MMAL product manager James Tol ruled out offering a third row as an option and said seven-seat customers still have the option of the Pajero or
The system, which includes a 6.1inch colour touchscreen housing the reverse camera monitor, is standard on the base model and comes with Bluetooth, four speakers, USB and auxiliary inputs and voice control. Higher-spec LS models get a larger seven-inch touchscreen in the redesigned centre stack, six-speaker audio and 3D sat-nav and additional luxuries like leather seats, tinted glass, rain-sensing wipers, power adjustable front seats and a cargo blind.
“So to tighten up on our model availability and keep things nice and compact and easy to manage, we thought best to concentrate on Challenger as a five-seater,” he said.
This is on top of the standard gear from the base model, including cruise control, leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls and climate control with rear seat ducts.
Prices for the three remaining models have risen slightly, with the base

Try and do better than that price in a turbo-diesel competitor, though. Everything from Hyundai’s strong-selling ix35 to Skoda’s compellingly packaged, allwheel-drive Yeti and even Mitsubishi’s well-rounded ASX cost thousands of dollars more when ticking the oil-burning option.

Interior While the Dualis exterior reflects a yearning for the great outdoors, the inside is pure city hatchback. The front doors open wide to give good access to the front seats, although the rear doors are set quite a way back, with the big central pillar impeding access. The interior fit-out is standard small-car fare, with plenty of hard plastics around the cabin. However, the mix of matte black surfaces and chrome highlights paints a picture that isn’t as cheap as the price tag suggests. The low-mounted steering wheel adjusts for both height and reach, and the wide, well bolstered driver’s seat makes getting comfortable behind the leather-wrapped wheel an easy task. A criticism, if we may, is that the reach adjust on the steering doesn’t quite come out far enough for taller drivers. Interior storage is adequate, with a decent-sized glovebox, a couple of different-sized drink holders, a lidded centre console bin that can swallow a full-size drink bottle, and door pockets that struggle to take one. What the Dualis misses, though, is small-item storage. Plug a phone charger into the dash-mounted 12-volt socket, and there’s nowhere to stash a phone that doesn’t interfere with the gearstick, apart from a shallow slash of space at the foot of the centre console and the cupholders. Rear-seat space is a bit tight, although the bench is comfortable enough for adults, with height-adjust headrests for each passenger. You’ll probably end up asking front-seat occupants to yield some

space, though. The seatback split-folds 60:40, although the floor space the Dualis creates doesn’t lie flat. It’s a rather high load height, too, thanks to a high sill. Despite the car’s small size, the tailgate lifts high enough to ensure it is not a bruise-inducing hazard for taller owners.
Engine and transmission The Dualis engine is borrowed from Nissan’s alliance with French car-maker Renault. At only 1.6 litres, the turbocharged fourcylinder powerplant produces 96kW – almost as much power as the larger 2.0-litre petrol version – and a big 320Nm of pulling power – that’s as much as a petrol V6. It also gets clever idle-stop fuel-saving technology that switches the engine off when the stationary car is slotted into neutral and a foot is kept on the brake. Start to depress the clutch pedal and the engine springs back to life. The 1.6-litre powerplant’s downfall is when you need some step-off acceleration, say from a traffic light. Without enough revs on board the engine bogs down, struggling to build speed. Once spinning, the engine produces a silky well of overtaking performance. It sounds like a diesel, but the engine’s coarseness, and even vibrations through the steering wheel and pedals, is never intrusive. It is frugal, officially sipping a classleading 4.5 litres per 100 kilometres, an ambitious target considering in our week behind the wheel it never fell below 5.3L/100km. By comparison, the petrol version officially and optimistically averages 8.1L/100km when fitted with the six-speed manual gearbox. Because it uses so little fuel, the diesel Dualis gains a better greenhouse – and air pollution – rating than the petrol. The six-speed gearbox is well-suited to the engine, supported by a light clutch pedal and good spread of gear ratios. The engine skips along at just below 2000rpm on the freeway. We also noticed a hint of surging from the engine under load at freeway speeds.
Ride and handling Diesel engines generally add weight to a car, which in something as small as the Dualis could be a bit of a problem. How-

ever, the 30-odd kilograms the TS model carries over the petrol-engined ST doesn’t appear to change much. The Dualis has an impressive ride, a big thing given its tallish 180mm-plus ride height. It absorbs almost all of the lumps and bumps of commuting without fuss, with very little transferred into the cabin. OK, so it gets a little bit of a roll on in cornering, but it never feels unsettled or lacking in confidence despite its frontwheel-drive layout that drags the highriding SUV around corners. It is still close to the best in its class. A blight is road roar from the tyres on coarse-chip road surfaces, but it is no worse, and even better than, some competitors.
Safety and servicing Dualis has a top five-star safety rating, helped by six airbags including headprotecting side airbags. A nuisance, though, is the rear-centre seatbelt that hangs from the boot-space roof. It cuts right across the rear window. Another annoyance is the reversing camera, which points at the ground and only shows the view for a few metres behind the Dualis. It needs to aim higher and show more area behind the hemmedin rear end. Nissan offers a three-year, 100,000km warranty on the Dualis, with a free roadside service and option to extend it for a bit more money. The car-maker also offers capped-price servicing on Dualis. Servicing costs are more expensive for the diesel compared with the petrol, ranging from a low of $277.18 for a six-month check-up, up to $605.22 for a major fourth-year workover.
Verdict Fitting the Dualis with a diesel engine has made a good, cheap city runabout better. However, the lack of an automatic option and a pricing premium bumping up the purchase price by more than 10 percent make it a difficult decision. If you’re not adverse to manual cogswapping, though, and don’t mind saving a few dollars compared with dieselengined, all-paw rivals, the well-equipped Dualis is well worth adding to the shopping list. European SUVs spin sales boom E
ver thought Kia and Hyundai just make Korean cars? Think again, because two of their best-selling models in June were actually made in eastern Europe.
Two months later in March, the company added a diesel version. The resulting supply boost has helped propel ix35 sales to new heights in 2013, with sales up 65.9 percent year-to-date – enough to overtake the Nissan Dualis as Australia’s most popular small SUV. Its 2225 sales in June was the highest figure for an SUV since the Ford Territory in 2005.
Recent decisions from both car-makers to source compact SUVs from Europe instead of Korea appear to have paid dividends last month, with both the ix35 and its Sportage twin achieving record sales.
HMCA general manager of public relations Bill Thomas said the European-sourced SE accounted for 1149, or 51.6 percent, of all ix35 sales in June.
Kia last month announced it would look to its Slovakian plant as a source for all Australianmarket Sportage soft-roaders in a bid to get a more constant supply of cars. The Korean company was beset with supply woes for the current-generation model – one of the first of Kia’s stylish new designs penned by former Audi designer Peter Schreyer – since launch in 2010, because the Korean plant that made ours could not keep up with global demand.
New places Conversely, as the European market struggled, factories such as Kia’s Slovakian facility suddenly needed new places to send their wares to keep production lines ticking over. Enter Australia. The company’s local arm announced the switch to Slovakian-built models in mid-June, at which time it is understood to have had enough units on the ground to make a substantial impact on last month’s sales figures. The results are stark – Kia sold 817 Sportages in June, which is almost double its previous record month of 462 units in July 2012. Sales
The company doesn’t attribute all this sales growth to having more supply, with Hyundai – like Kia – offering driveaway deals last month. But, says Mr Thomas, “it does show what’s possible when we secure increased supply”. EURO SOURCE: The Hyundai ix35 SE comes from the Czech Republic.
for the month were up 79.6 percent over June last year. European Series 2 Sportage models added extra features such as HID headlamps, cornering lamps, partial leather seat trims, a rear seat warmer, front wiper de-icer and an economy mode on the diesel automatic version that dulls the throttle response and optimises the gearbox to chase fuel economy. More importantly, the strong – albeit now weakening – exchange rate helped Kia cut the starting price to $25,490 before on-road costs – cheaper than most rivals. June’s sales boost was not all down to the Eu-
ropean sourcing, since Kia Australia has also offered driveaway deals and factory bonuses. But having more stock, and therefore keeping more buyers away from waiting lists, played a part. “The strength of the Sportage is extremely pleasing, particularly in light of the decision to source the cars from our Slovakian factory where we are confident supply will be more consistent,” Kia Motors Australia chief operating officer Tony Barlow said. This news comes six months after parent company Hyundai announced that it would import a Czech-made petrol-powered special edition of the ix35 called the SE to supplement its local, supply restricted Korean-made range.
Unique features Unique features include a Euro-specific front bumper with fog-lights, projector headlights with dusk sensors, power folding side mirrors, 17-inch alloy wheels and darker rear window tinting. The cabin gets leather/leatherette seats – heated in the front – and a chilled glovebox. Also fitted to the car is a rear-view camera integrated into the auto-dimming rear-view mirror. Petrol versions of the SE cost $3000 more than the base, Korean-made Active, but diesel versions are $2600 cheaper than the next mostaffordable oil-burning version. Mike Costello © GoAutoMedia, 2013

ALL SHOW-SHIFTER: Subaru BRZ sport pack adds suspension mods and bling but no kilwatts.
Subaru retro-fit for sporty BRZ A
racier-looking – but not faster – version of the Subaru BRZ is now available in Australia, and existing owners are invited to the party.
As reported in March, the BRZ ‘S’ package brings a range of aerodynamic and stylistic changes to the popular coupe – a twin of Toyota’s even bigger-selling 86 – but no engine tweaks such as the fitment of a factory turbo. The kit – which Subaru said existing owners could retro-fit – costs $7195 when added to a six-speed automatic BRZ or $7995 when fitted to six-speed manual versions. The regular BRZ costs from $37,150 driveaway and can still only be ordered online, rather than at a regular Subaru dealer. For your money, you get front, side and rear under-spoilers, a contrasting black boot lid spoiler, 17-inch black alloy wheels – not STI gold, push-button start for the engine and a different rear diffuser.
reinforces the struts, just like on the STI performance pack for the WRX, and lower coil springs. Manual versions get a gear-shift lever assembly and a Duracon STI-style shift knob.
In welcome news for the 955 Australians that have, according to VFACTS sales data, already bought a BRZ, Subaru Australia dealers will also retro-fit the package to existing cars. However, the retro-fit kits only come with a two-year warranty, compared with three years if bought new with the car. Subaru Australia managing director Nick Senior said customers had frequently asked for something like the S package for their cars. “All indications are that many BRZ buyers want to add some performance touches to their cars and choosing Subaru-backed equipment offers great design, quality and peace-of-mind that isn’t necessarily guaranteed by after-market suppliers,” he said.

Great Wall’s local expansion plans have been dealt a blow, with importer Ateco putting the launch of the crucial VX10 light car on hold indefinitely after struggling to make a viable business case.
The light-sized VX10 was to be Great Wall’s entry-level model in Australia, and would have potentially opened the brand up to a whole new market beyond the V-Series ute and X-Series SUV. Until recently, the VX was on the cards to arrive by September this year priced around $13,000 – or equivalent to smaller offerings such as the Mitsubishi Mirage and Nissan Micra. But, says Ateco Automotive PR consultant for Asian brands Daniel Cotterill, the recent devaluation of the Australian dollar has changed the game plan. “I think we have had issues there given the recent devalu-
