The dance school will present shows based on a music and musicals theme at 11am and 2.30am. The performances will include tap and jazz dancing from pre-school youngster to adults to music from musicals such as Little Shop of Horrors, The Truth About Love, Seussical the Musical and Moulin Rouge. Dancers have been rehearsing since February for the June show and afterwards will start new routines for an end-of-year performance in November. Expo leads the pack O

rganisers preparing for next Tuesday’s 2013 Wimmera and Southern Mallee Careers Expo at Longerenong believe the event has become the premier presentation of its type in western Victoria.

Expo chairman Chris Wallis and his committee are preparing to lie out a ‘welcome mat’ for a ‘huge’ influx of regional students and career hunters from across the region. He said the event would deliver a broad spectrum of vocational information to the door of the people of the WimmeraMallee. “The careers expo, which is in its 27th year, provides an exceptional opportunity in our region that is not to be missed,” he said. “Many people are looking to do further study, complete additional training, change career paths, or have their skills formally recognised to obtain a qualification. The expo will allow people to talk face to face with a broad selection of peo-

ple about the possibilities and processes involved in those options. “As well as general exhibitors who are available to answer questions and share their knowledge, there will be over 20 tertiary institutions represented, various interactive Try-A-Trade displays and 50 seminar sessions. An Exhibitor List and seminar program can be found on the expo’s website which we will update regularly.”

New exhibitors The Careers Expo will be at Longerenong’s Wimmera Events Centre and will be open free of charge from 9.30am until 2pm. Buses from Horsham, Buloke, Northern Grampians Ararat, West Wimmera, Yarriambiack and Hindmarsh municipalities will travel to the event. Mr Wallis said this year’s expo featured new exhibitors, including the mounted branch of Victoria Police. “The members and their horses, which will be looked after by Longerenong Ag-

“I’ve just come back from China after competing with the Chinese team and have also been to England for a couple of competitions. I’ve been just flat-out training,” he said. “When we get there will we will have time to familiarise ourselves with the site and how things are set up. We’ll then have a day off to deal with nerves and then it’s into it for four days.” Taylor and fellow competitors will have to work on six three-hour modules that involve everything from engine and transmission rebuilds to engine-management and body electrical systems. They will work on Volkswagen car systems, specifically built and prepared for the competition. Judges will plant problems that competi-

“I expect tough competition to come from the strong automotive countries such as China, England, America, Korea and Japan,” he said. “But I rate my chances as pretty good. I’ve had a lot of training and spent a lot of time in preparation.”

School sets standard in regional education

tour through a new $6-million Horsham Special School for children with disabilities quickly reveals that the Wimmera now has something extra that is indeed ‘special’. The school, which will become a unique learning environment for students next term, is an outstanding example of purpose-built architecture and foresight. What is immediately obvious from the roomy, lightfilled multi-purpose primary and secondary classrooms and specialist areas is that the

school is more than just somewhere for kids who need extra help.

Working with various allied health organisations across the region, Horsham Special School has the potential to put the Wimmera on the national disability-learning map. It is not hard to imagine some parents across Australia, perhaps desperately seeking help for their children, making a decision to move to the region simply on what this school will offer. It is a big deal. The school already looks after the specialist education needs of 75 children, some travelling from as far as the SA border, and has room to grow.

I agree that allowing racism to interfere with our evolution as a people, does reflect a combination of ignorance, unease and cultural cringe. Is there a simple solution at this point in time? School council president Max Cuddihy was right when he suggested that the new building should simply represent a stage in the overall development of the High Street education precinct in Horsham. “The challenge now is to get our secondary college rebuilt,” he said. It is important to note that the already established gardens and conference centre at the new school have come courtesy of Horsham College’s senior campus. It only takes a quick glance over the fence from the special school

Likewise, endless detention of asylum seekers is tolerated because our representatives believe it is reflecting the will of the electorate. Is that treatment something we can justify as fair-minded people? Some things are just not funny – such as children growing up witnessing domestic violence, sexual abuse or generations of people having had their culture systematically ridiculed. When one is continually patronised, ignored or put down it might be easier to laugh it off than challenge the attitude of the bully, leaving the recipient feeling further devalued.

The college also gave up ground on its middle school site for a regional trade training centre building, all the while trying to manage outdated and in some cases deteriorating buildings for the largest collective group of secondary students in the region. We hope Horsham Special School, set to have a far-reaching impact on what would have been previously disadvantaged children across the region, the level of facility our public-school children can expect in the near future. The truth is they should be entitled to it – regardless of where they live in Victoria.

Visiting students tackle pest wattle infestations A group of 260 year-eight students and their teachers from Ivanhoe Grammar School have completed a project to help tackle weeds in Grampians National Park. During the past two months, student groups spent 15 days volunteering with Parks Victoria and Conservation Vol-

unteers as part of an outdoor education program. National Park volunteer coordinator Katherine Dyson said the students and staff worked to remove sallow wattle, a serious pest plant, from two areas in the park. “They spent three days removing wattle from an area

near Wartook and 12 days tackling a bigger infestation at Troopers Campground along Roses Gap Road,” she said. “The volunteers worked very hard to help remove the wattle from the camp ground in a variety of weather conditions. “It is an incredible opportunity for us to collaborate and

there are joint benefits for us in managing the park and for the school. “Sallow Wattle removal in the Grampians National Park is completed by Conservation Volunteers. We have had a lot of success with the students and they have been reluctant to stop working,” she said.

Rain timing perfect to deliver orchid project

The rain has fallen at a perfect time for the reintroduction of rare native orchids into the environment. The timing has also been perfect for 1500 critically engendered Metallic Sunorchids, Thelymitra epipactoides, planted out last year. Only 30 were left in the Wimmera and 1000 worldwide before last year’s planting, the result of three years of laboratory research into propagation. Volunteers have also been introducing another rare Wimmera species, the Brilliant Sun-orchid, Thelymitra mackibbinii, back into the environment. Wimmera Catchment Management Association’s Orchid Conservation Project is based at Horsham’s Wimmera Orchid Conservation Facility, now growing 30 types of endangered orchid species for projects in Victoria, SA and NSW.

Project manager Dr Noushka Reiter and volunteers from the Friends of the Little Desert and Australasian Native Orchid Society planted more than 400 Metallic Sun-orchids in Little Desert National Park and Kiata Reserve in the last fortnight. It was part of a project funded by Caring for our Country and the Australian Orchid Foundation. Dr Reiter said volunteers were thrilled to plant new orchids alongside emerging orchids from last year’s plantings.

“There are a lot of people watching closely to see if last year’s reintroductions worked and we’re thrilled to say they have,” she said. “At the end of July we will count how many plants have emerged from last year. It’s looking pretty good at this stage.” Dr Reiter said a winter planting program had been looking dubious due to an extremely dry late-spring, summer and early autumn. “We had almost six months

The planting has the potential to double the population of this endangered species, which exists at only two sites in the world – Stawell and Bendigo. “This was a particularly special planting with members from the former Stawell Field Naturalists Club,” she said. “It was a landmark occasion for three women from the group - Lesley Bennett, Win Peitch and Thelma Argall. “They are all in their late 80s and after many decades of monitoring and nurturing one of the two remaining populations of this species, it is exciting for them to be directly involved in potentially doubling the population.”

The project has the go-ahead after the government confirmed it would provide $150,000 for the works program. part of the upgrade, which is important in rural communities. “The larger floor space will enable greater ability to run programs in association with the neighbouring childcare centre.” Mr Delahunty said an all-access toilet would replace the library’s limited facilities, making the library a more inviting venue for residents. The government is funding the upgrade through the third round of its Living Libraries Infrastructure Program.

Duck day at Natimuk

Field and Game Australia chief executive officer Rod Drew will return to the Wimmera for a ‘duck day’ at Natimuk Lake this Sunday.

West Wimmera farmer Wayne Caldow will join Mr Drew at the free ‘Do you want more ducks on your farm?’ event in Natimuk Lake pavilion. The event will be from 10am to noon. Wimmera Catchment Management Authority’s bird monitoring officer Jonathan Starks will also speak. Mr Drew will provide insight into Field and Game Australia’s wetland trust. He said farmers putting land aside for wildlife habitat was a

Stawell club has flood-proof park Stawell Golf Club now has a sealed car park purposely designed to cope with storms and floodwater. State and federal government grants have allowed Northern Grampians Shire Council to repair the park, which with other club infrastructure was damaged during a 2001 flood. The $140,000 repairs were part of a flood recovery infrastructure program funded by government money filtered to the council during the past two years. Northern Grampians Shire’s Cr Karen Hyslop said construction of the car park and associated drainage work would mitigate damage caused by future heavy rain and flooding. “Having a properly designed and constructed sealed area with engineered drainage systems will reinstate the functionality of the car park, prevent damage reoccurring and make the facility more resilient,” she said. Other flood-recovery work completed last year included repairs and improvements to drainage, paths and bridges over the creek running through the club course. Stawell Golf Club president Ron Bailey said the latest car park work would save the club a ‘great deal of time, money and stress for members in the future’.

Wimmera Health Care Group Foundation fundraising fortnight at the end of July will focus on food and football. Amina Elshafei, a 2012 contestant on television’s Masterchef program, will be in Horsham during the fortnight to run a series of master classes. Her classes will showcase unique dishes influenced by her Middle Eastern and Asian background.

Regional football clubs, which rely heavily on Wimmera Health Care Group services, are also joining forces for a variety of fundraising activities. Debbie Simpson is busy organising a Foundation Football Fundraising Fortnight for the last two weekends in July. Wimmera and Horsham district league teams are being invited to raise money for the foundation at home matches of one of the two weekends.

Friends of the Foundation have postponed a July 27 Patron’s Dinner due to the ill health of patron Peter Doyle.

rarat Musical Comedy Society will bring musical Beauty and the Beast to life in Ararat with shows starting on Friday night.

The society will present 8pm shows this Friday and Saturday, and Friday and Saturday weeks. It will also present 2pm matinee performances on Sunday and Saturday week. Director Grant Johnson and musical director Leanne McCready have assembled a cast of 50 for the musical. Mr Johnson said he was thrilled with the show’s preparation and how cast members had adapted to their characters. “The character list is huge, with each person in the cast bringing to life at least three different roles on stage, and they are all doing a brilliant job,” he said. STATE OF THE ART: A new $6-million Horsham Special School to help the education needs of Wimmera children with disabilities will provide a new and modern learning environment for students from July 15. Work to repair stormwater-harvesting infrastructure and install erosion-prevention rock beaching at Stawell Clay Target Complex is complete. The work was possible with $12,500 in government funding from the Department of Planning and Community Development Flood Recovery Community Infrastructure Fund. Stawell club president Phil Scott said members appreciated the grant because raising the money for the repairs would have been beyond their means. “We are a small club of 30 members so it would not have been possible for us to raise the money. We are really grateful to have obtained the funding.”

his week I saw a young cat at the vet clinic called Tiger, who has a heart murmur. He’s one of our shelter cats, a lovely, healthy boy who is full of mischief and energy. To all intents and purposes he is normal, and his heart murmur was only picked up as an incidental finding at his vet check when he first came to Animal Aid. Animals such as Tiger can pose a bit of a dilemma for us vets. The presence of a murmur on its own doesn’t necessarily tell us what is going on with the heart. A heart murmur is an unusual or abnormal quality to the sound that the heart makes when it beats, and can be detected as a ‘whooshing’ noise by a vet with a stethoscope. This sound indicates that there is turbulence in the flow of blood through the heart. It might be associated with an anatomical or structural abnormality within the heart or the associated vessels. Heart murmurs are graded from one to six according to their intensity and loudness, and in general, higher grades are more likely to be associated with clinical disease. Some animals are born with heart murmurs – many puppies or kittens will have

a murmur in their first days to weeks of life, and often this will disappear by the time they first see a vet. Some, however, might keep a low-grade murmur throughout their lives, without it ever causing them any problems. If the murmur is severe, however, it might indicate that the heart has failed to develop normally, and some of these animals will develop heart disease and fail to thrive as they grow. Animals can also develop heart murmurs later in life, through disease processes such as degeneration of the valves over time, or failure of the heart muscle. These conditions can lead to congestive heart failure, where poor circulation and insufficient heart function lead to symptoms such as lethargy, coughing, weight loss and getting out of breath quickly. Animals with heart disease might require medication to help with their condition. Many heart murmurs are detected at annual health checks, and if the pet is

showing no symptoms of heart disease, it can be difficult to assess how significant the murmur is, and how much we should be concerned. There are some tests, however, that can be quite helpful in deciding whether the murmur is causing a problem, and whether it’s likely to do so in the future. These can include blood tests to assess the animal’s overall wellbeing, and more specific tests such as chest x-rays or ultrasound of the heart, which can give us an idea of the size, shape, and function of the heart.

Luckily for Tiger, his chest X-rays were clear, and in every other way he is a normal happy cat. For now, his heart murmur doesn’t seem to be having any negative impact on his health, and hopefully he’ll live a long and healthy life with a new family. orsham mayor Cr David Grimble has used the launch of the book Yanga Track…Wanjab, Gadjin and Murnong to highlight the importance of the region’s native plants.

In Wergaia language Wanjab means ‘fire’, Gadjin ‘water’ and Yanga ‘to walk’. Murnong, or yam daisy, was an important food source for Aboriginal people in southeast Australia. “These plants were the medicine chest, hardware store and supermarket of the traditional owners as they traversed up and down the Wimmera River,” Cr Grimble said. Yanga Track is below Horsham weir and one of the most popular Wimmera River walking and cycling tracks in Horsham. It is near the historic Wopet-Bungundilar campsite, an area protected under the State Archaeological and Ab-

Around 150 people packed Hopetoun’s Memorial Hall to celebrate 70 years of community health services.

The occasion featured presentations and reflections. Health service chief executive Catherine Morley presented ladies auxiliary members with service badges, Hopetoun farmer and emcee Wal Ferguson interviewed guests who shared their health stories and memories.

“It was great to see so many Glenorchy people attend the night and enjoy the food and entertainment in their new-look hall,” Cr Rice said.

The two projects are based on different aspects of Horsham. The CAD strategy focuses on the core retail and commercial centre of the city, and the Framework for Managing Growth addressing expansion of the city at its fringes. Business Horsham chairwoman Andrea Cross said it

was important Horsham business people read both draft strategies and submitted feedback and comments to the council.

“I’m pleased to see this positive research and that growth is forecast for Horsham. I’m also encouraged to see that the shop floor-space vacancy rates in Horsham are consistent with other well-performing centres,” she said. Horsham mayor Cr David Grimble said the Framework for Managing Growth strategy examined factors influencing city expansion. “It’s important to realise that a lot of land in and around

Horsham is not only affected by flooding, bushfire and the like, but also the availability of water and sewer and other types of infrastructure,” he said. Tourism growth in Grampians Latest statistics have revealed ‘significant’ tourism growth in the Grampians and district. Tourism Research Australia data, from the 12 months leading up to the end of March this year, shows an increase in domestic as well as international visits. Domestic overnight visits to the Grampians rose by 15.8 percent and the number of international visitors increased 31.9 percent. Grampians Tourism chief executive Will Flamsteed said it was satisfying to see more visitors were choosing Grampians region as a destination. “The hard work put in by our industry to provide great visitor experiences is crucial to attracting more visitors, so I congratulate those businesses,” he said.

“Other factors that positively influence visitation include: special events, marketing activities undertaken as part of our flood-recovery plan and works by Parks Victoria to re-establish storm-damaged infrastructure caused by extreme weather in January 2011. Mr Flamsteed said the figures represented an opportunity to build momentum. “I encourage all members of the Grampians tourism industry to get on board and participate in the Grampians Official Visitor Guide which is our annual showcase publication,” he said. Services provided by Council Ararat Rural City Council provides many services to the community. Over the coming months Council will provide an insight of all services on offer. Many of these services are required under State Legislation.

Emergency Management Council have varied Emergency Management capabilities and resources for municipal response to emergencies. Council‘s Municipal Fire Prevention Officer liaises with fire response organisations and the public in reducing risk of fire throughout the municipality. The Municipal Fire Prevention Officers tasks include but are not limited to; issuing of fire prevention notices to land-holders, issuing of fire permits and the enforcement of these permits when required. The Emergency Management Coordinator role is responsible for changes to Neighbourhood Safer Places within the municipality and ensuring their adherence to statutory obligations. The Emergency Management Coordinator also works closely with other roles within Council’s emergency management team. These roles are varied and can include tasks of deploying Council resources such as graders to help at fires, opening and coordinating relief centres for evacuees within the municipality and coordinating recovery services after an emergency event such as personal counselling and rehabilitation of municipal assets. Council also works hard at minimising damage from natural disasters through preventive planning and works including flood and fire planning, pandemic plans and operational works like slashing and spraying to provide strategic fire breaks to name only a few.

Local Laws » Animal registrations – Ensure compliance of registering cats and dogs as required by State legislation. » Animal control – Management of animals within the municipality to ensure community safety and minimising potential for dogs and cats to create a nuisance and response to stray animals under the Domestic Animal Act 1994. » Effectively identify all dangerous dogs, menacing dogs and restricted breed dogs in the municipality to ensure those dogs are kept in compliance with the Domestic Animals Act and Regulations. » Pound Operation - Operate pound to legislated standard, including food, cleaning, electricity, water, insurance, euthanasia and re-housing. » Partnering with dog and cat shelters and rescue organisations to rehouse suitable dogs and cats. » Emergency After Hours Call Outs Service - for Stock on municipal roads, dogs attacking people or animals or when community safety is compromised. » Parking Control - Provide appropriate levels of surveillance for adopted parking strategies, in particular meter collection and parking infringements, including prosecutions. » School Crossing Management - Manage school crossing points and associated staff.

Domestic Animal Management Plan Councils in Victoria are required under Section 68A of the Domestic Animals Act 1994 (the Act) to prepare and implement a Domestic Animal Management Plan (The Plan) at four year intervals with the objective to outline Council’s plans for animal management. The purpose of The Plan is to: » Document current processes and practices under the Ararat Rural City Council’s animal management responsibilities » Increase compliance with the Act. Increase pet owners’ knowledge of the principles of responsible pet ownership and enhance community safety and awareness » Assist the Bureau of Animal Welfare (BAW) a branch of the Department of Environment and Department of Primary Industries (DEPI) to achieve its stated objectives of reducing the numbers of dogs and cats being euthanased » Maximise the numbers of dogs and cats that are registered in the Ararat municipality » Minimise the harmful effect of domestic pets on the population of native birds, mammals and reptiles » Take into account community views on animal management matters » Comply with the relevant provisions of the Act. Council has prepared a Domestic Animal Management Plan 2012-2016 and a copy of this plan is available by contacting Matthew Wood, Manager of Risk Emergency Services and Local Laws on 5355 0214. Alternatively a hard copy of the plan is on public display at the front counter of the Municipal Offices, corner of High Street and Vincent Street, Ararat until Friday 21 June 2013.

Community focus Victoria’s Parliamentary Electoral Boundary Redivision 2012-2013 On 27 June this year the Electoral Boundaries Commission (EBC) are releasing their report on new proposed State electoral boundaries for Victoria. This report will be displayed in Council offices, service centres and libraries in every municipality across Victoria. The process invites public participation and people can get involved by inspecting the maps in the Proposed Boundaries report. Interested citizens are encouraged to respond with any suggestions or objections during the submission period in July. All these submissions will be considered prior to the final boundaries being released in October this year.

The State electoral boundaries determine the areas from which members of the Upper and Lower Houses of Parliament are elected. These areas should hold roughly the same number of electors so that each MP represents an equal number of people in Parliament.

n Ararat gala Night of Nights fundraiser has generated the final $30,000 needed for a $150,000 CT scanner for East Grampians Health Service.

The Victorian Police Blue Ribbon Foundation Ararat branch event attracted more than 230 people, including Victoria police Assistant Commissioner for Western Region Jack Blayney who led a minute’s silence in memory of police officers killed in the line of duty. Parliamentary Secretary for Police and Emergency Services David Southwick also attended paid tribute to the foundation’s Ararat branch for its achievements.

Officials made a special presentation to retiring MP Joe Helper, who has attended all 12 Blue Ribbon gala nights. Celebrity auctioneer Phil de Fegely led a charity auction and police band Code One provided entertainment. Health service medical staff will use the CT scanner to get detailed three-dimensional images of parts of patient bodies.

Mr Southwick congratulated the foundation on its work to preserve the memory of police members who paid the ultimate sacrifice. “The legacy of fallen police officers lives on in hospitals across Victoria, where money donated to the Blue Ribbon Foundation is used to improve wards and purchase life-saving equipment,” Mr Southwick said.

Fit Freeland fires Trounson avoids trumping B

ob Freeland, a ‘class of 1966’ foundation member of Stawell Amateur Athletic Club sacrificed a week of ‘beer and biscuits’ to win his first ever 16-kilometre Charlie Jones Handicap in the Stawell Ironbarks last Saturday.

Freeland, 63, likes a beer but he is otherwise a dedicated adherent to a healthy diet and a rigid training routine. The veteran has won a dozen or more races over shorter distances with the club in its 47 year history but in recent times has battled weight and an achilles tendon problem and wins have been scarce. “I’m seven kilograms lighter than I was a year or so ago. I’m running 10 kilometres every day, swimming a kilometre a day, I’m enjoying it and can’t get enough of it,” he said. “Every Monday night at Central Park I’m training a group of runners of all ages and abilities in an intensive speed session – anyone can come along – and that’s helped me too.” Three of Freeland’s ‘disciples’ finished behind him in the race.

After five seconds and one third in six races this season the relentless Jack Trounson, at his 575th start, finally shook off the bridesmaid tag to score a popular win in the eightkilometre Ian and Janice Wilson Ararat Motor Inn Handicap at Ararat last Sunday.

In preparation for the 16km, Freeland ran a strong 15km at Halls Gap during the week and that was enough to help withstand a spirited challenge from another veteran Peter Barham who had tested himself over 22km just to make sure he could run the distance. Finishing as strongly as he started, Freeland had 21 seconds to spare from Barham, a methodical runner who builds gradually into a race. Recent winner Rachel Coverdale continued to build on her form and fitness and was third on handicap, but fastest of all was ‘Super’ Susie Ellis was out to make time and did just that covering the distance in an impressive 71.21 minutes.

The irony is that the evergreen, whose body has endured a pounding over 90,000 kilometres of racing and training in a long and distinguished career, was almost upstaged by Sam Gason, a green, 20-year-old debutant, who might have toppled the pre-race favourite but for an unscheduled pit-stop just 400 metres from the finish.

In the Sub-Junior division of the race Logan Casey had just 0.06 seconds to spare from his brother Jacob at the end of a hotly contested 1.5km. Promising 10-year-old Liam Davey ran fastest time of 6.07 minutes. Race action returns to the Ironbarks on Saturday for the five kilometre Steve Baird Handicap. Trounson said. “I didn’t think I was going to catch him but at the 2km mark he just seemed to run out of legs and then I just had to put my head down and hope that no one came from behind me.” Gason, in fact, was closing fast, swooping past Makovec and looking a real threat to the tireless veteran,

but suddenly succumbing to a stomach upset, forcing a stop at the business end of the race. It was a timely win for Trounson who leaves next month on an extended motor tour and won’t return to the club until very late in the season. Keith Lofthouse

Caretakers for Stawell S

hane Field and Jamie Solyom will be senior caretaker coaches with Stawell Football Club for the rest of this season after the sudden resignation of onfielder leader Tim Seymour.

Warrior’s president John Griffiths confirmed that Seymour, in his first year leading the club, had resigned because of pressing family needs. “His decision certainly came as a surprise, especially after we had our first win for the season. But we certainly understand his circumstances,” Mr Griffiths said Seymour is a father of four and

he and his wife are expecting another child.

The last time these sides met, the Rupanyup quarter-time address fired up the young Rams and they were never headed. The likes of Tim Friend, Jamie Elliott, Ash and Jeremy Pekin will be keen to inflict two losses in the one year on Rupanyup. Rupanyup’s big men possibly hold the key to the game. If Nick Johnston can give first use of the ball to his engine room of Glenn Wyatt, Nathan Sasche and Noel Jorgenson it allows Matt Tyler to stay close to goal and put the Natimuk backline under pressure. David Lang and Andrew Tyler will also add to the forward firepower for Rupanyup and the question will be whether Natimuk has the defensive personnel to contain the Rupanyup trio. Natimuk coach Dylan Wright boldly introduced youngster Kyle O’Connor to senior football a few weeks back and the Rams’ hierarchy will be hoping he can continue to kick goals and take pressure off the likes of Wright, Friend and the other key forwards. The Rams will need plenty of goal kickers if they are to get over the line.

Tigers, Kees The blustery wet plains are where visiting Pimpinio will go to clash with rampaging premiership favourite Kalkee. Kalkee showed its dominance last week and in the absence of Adam Carter, big Grant Schultz stepped into the breach slotting home five goals. The problem for the Tigers’ backline, led by Simon Risson and Alex Hill, will be how to contain the big forwards in Schultz, Josh Beddison and Adam Carter if he returns because the trio trouble the scoreboard attendants with regular monotony.

James Dixon and Matt Cranage are key targets for the Saints, Dixon usually attracting the best defender with good reason because of his ability to rack up goals quickly.

So close, co far It will again be a case of so close, so far for Harrow-Balmoral when it travels to Laharum this week. So close, because the Roos sit two points outside the five. So far, because they run into the red-hot Demons. By the end of Saturday the Roos will sit at least four or possibly six points from finals contention. The Roos aren’t on their own as they try to formulate a plan to stop Laharum’s key forwards from making the scoreboard spin at regular intervals. Liam Jakobi will need to be at his best to stop Jake Hobbs in the aerial contests. If Hobbs wins in the air the big bodies of Tim Wade, Steve Schultz and Paul Christian will give their forwards an armchair ride. Pimpinio forwards Sam Turmine and Dylan Baker will need to make the most of every opportunity to keep the Tigers in the game and if they can’t wrap their dukes around the ball they need to make sure they get it to ground so the likes of Cam and Ryan Ellis can get a score on the board. Darcy and Todd O’Connor and Dylan Arnott will toil manfully but with their lighter bodies will struggle to stop the premiership favourites from posting another win.

Bounce back Noradjuha-Quantong will bounce back onto the winners list and into finals contention by putting Taylors Lake to the sword this week. The Bombers’ forward line led by the Shane

Oakley, coach Adam Hall and youngster Sam Weddell will be salivating in anticipation of the opportunities presented to them by the likes of Matt Ward, Brent McIntyre and Jason Kerr. A Taylors Lake backline led by veteran Brent Monaghan and Luke Robertson will work overtime to propel numerous Bomber sorties. Aaron Lewis and Jason Weir provide plenty of grunt in the midfield and their battle with the likes of Ward and McIntyre will be bruising. When the ball spills free the Lakers will lack the leg speed to kerb the young Bombers. Down the highway the match of the round will involve the third and fourth sides doing battle in a game that will provide an indication of how far Swifts have the come in recent weeks. Edenhope-Apsley was disappointing last week but the injury-riddled Saints are safe in the top three and a win against the Swifts will shut the door. The big question will be whether the Baggies

Shannon Argall and Jason Przibilla have been in outstanding form and the Roos don’t boast a lot of height to bring them down. Harrow-Balmoral might have to turn the game into a shootout to grab the points and then rely on Brent Penny and Tim Cogger repeating their performance from last week. Harrow-Balmoral coach Brent Forsyth has led from the front all year and with Dave Vickery provides the basis of a solid midfield. Their battle with Robbie Miller and Sam Winfield should be a beauty but in the end the Demons boast more class through the likes of Hamish Roberts, Andrew Combe and Zac Price.

Round 10 of Mininera and District Football League this weekend will feature undefeated Wickliffe-Lake Bolac taking on SMW Rovers. Last week after a terrible first quarter, SMW Rovers were six goals down to Penshurst by the first break. But after the efforts of Billie Leskosek with nine goals and the best efforts of Tyler Mason, Nathan Cahir and Brady Curran, the Rovers come within four points of victory in the

last quarter. However Penshurst was too good and claimed a 15-point victory.

The Bulldogs this week will be looking for a team effort and 21 contributors to claim a big scalp by upsetting Wickliffe-Lake Bolac. A win would keep the side in touch with the top five. Wickliffe-Lake Bolac continued its domination of the league last week with a 136-point drubbing of Ararat Eagles. Long-time Magpie Daniel Smith led the charge, kicking eight goals, which earnt him best-on-field honours. Other players who found themselves in the Magpies’ best were Jason Quinlivian, Josh Keys and big

man Bradley Keilar. The Magpies will be looking to all their players to step up and continue their strong season. Glenthompson-Dunkeld travels to Hawkesdale to take on the Hawkesdale-Macarthur Eagles. Glenthompson-Dunkeld gave itself breathing space in the top five when it defeated seventh-placed Tatyoon last week. The Rams led all day in a close encounter and finished up victors by nine points. Carl Joyce, Laurie Gordon and Scott Day all dominated for the Rams and they will be looking for a similar performance this week to get themselves three games clear of sixth-placed Hawkesdale-Macarthur.

Hawkesdale-Macarthur needs a win to stay in touch with the finals after last week going down to LismoreDerrinallum. Lachlan Reichman was the team’s only multiple goal scorer for the day with two while Murray Habel and Jeremy Gleeson provided best-on-ground performances along with Andrew Boss and Sam Grinter. These players will again need to stand up.

Door swings wide open for Nhill WIMMERA FOOTBALL LEAGUE

hill faces a tantalising prospect of drawing equal on points with fifth-placed MinyipMurtoa if it can upset the Burras in Wimmera Football League this weekend. The Tigers, amid considerable offfield controversy, have quietly put themselves into a position on the field where they can challenge for the finals. A boilover victory over MinyipMurtoa on home soil would fall short of elevating the group into the top five. But it would put it in the hunt and set up a critical match it should win against Horsham RSL the following week. Nhill is hovering in football’s noman’s land on the edge of the five with a three-four win-loss record so far this season. Yet Warrack Eagles and Minyip-Murtoa, perhaps commanding greater respect from armchair analysts, are so far only one win and percentage better than the Tigers. Nhill made ground on the leaders when its turn to collect free points from a bye came last week. It followed the club’s three-point roundseven win over Ararat at Ararat of which the importance has now become glaringly obvious. Suddenly the Tigers appear right in the hunt, something that won’t be lost on the Minyip-Murtoa brains trust and team leaders. Minyip-Murtoa couldn’t stay on the pace with Horsham last week and would be looking at the Nhill game as an opportunity to steady the ship.

An interesting statistic from the Burras’ outing against the Demons was a lack of multiple goal-kickers which either means the group has plenty of avenues to goal or that it has trouble straightening up when pushing forward. Skilful duo Brayden Ison and Clinton Midgley loom as potential targets in the teeth of goals and it might be that the Burras simply need to get the ball into their hands more often. Minyip-Murtoa has no shortage of running players with Kade Petering leading the crop last week and John Delahunty providing versatility across the ground. But Nhill has a good running fleet, capped off by slick Matt Jones. Will Kelly was the primary goalkicker for the Tigers last outing and the likes of Adam Bound and Nathan

Devanny won accolades for their efforts. From a Nhill perspective the consistent good form of Simon Brearley is also worth noting. Minyip-Murtoa should win but the Tigers are more than capable of causing an upset, particularly at home.

Roos and Rats Sixth-placed Ararat is also searching for points but will have to wait at least another week. The Rats are two games outside the five and run head-on into a competition-leading Dimboola in full flight. Regardless of what many consider one of the best home-ground advantages in the competition, Ararat doesn’t have the firepower to match the visiting Roos. Few clubs would be satisfied with a noble loss but that’s what the Rats, struggling with a lack of percentage, might simply have to be content with on Saturday. Dimboola brushed highly fancied Horsham Saints aside to the tune of about six goals last week and will consider Ararat on Saturday and Stawell the following week as warmups for a July 6 clash with Horsham. The Roos’ Ash Clugston is on Toohey Medal pace and it seems, in this year’s high-quality Dimboola side that no opposition defender can quell his influence.

Ararat fell short of the mark against Warrack Eagles last outing, a struggle to find enough goal-kickers again a major issue. Liam Cavanagh, Nic Maddison and Harry Ganley led the cause while Alan Batchelor and Aaron Searle again provided the opposition with plenty to think about.

Inkster Warrack Eagles, meanwhile, need to bolster their winning record and would have plans to add Stawell to a kill list at Warracknabeal. But the Eagles will take on a Warriors outfit fresh from a breakthrough and confidence-boosting win against Horsham RSL Diggers.

Stawell successfully closed down the Diggers’ avenues to goal last week with ruckman and now joint caretaker coach Shane Field leading the way. Young players such as Toby Reid, Jackson Dark and Zac Marrow were also good. Fans will wait with interest to see what impact the resignation of coach Tim Seymour has on the group. Eagles fans have been able to watch talented coach Tim Inkster in full flight in the last couple of weeks. Inkster kicked five goals against Ararat and shared the spoils with strong Peter Weir, who also bagged five. Scott Adams is set for a big aerial battle with Field and Ben Spicer and Jake Cheney and will attempt to apply the defensive screws again. A clash between Horsham City Oval co-tenants Horsham and Horsham RSL Diggers completes the round. Horsham, like Dimboola, is in solid mid-season form and that spells danger for the under-performing Diggers. It’s Horsham’s young guns who are setting the pace at the moment with Rhona Conboy and Billy Lloyd shining last week. The Diggers have lost one of their best defenders in Ben Devlin with a serious leg injury, which will place huge responsibility on the shoulders of in-form Luke Chamberlain. Despite the efforts of Brodie Mines, Justin Cozens and Joel Owins the Diggers won’t be able to match the Nic Pekin-led Demons out of the middle.

ord’s tiny 1.0-litre threecylinder EcoBoost engine has won the coveted International Engine of the Year award for the second successive year, beating impressive powerplants from carmakers such as Ferrari, McLaren, Porsche, BMW and Audi.

The results were again headlined by a small, economical engine taking top honours ahead of a high-performance unit, following Fiat’s two-cylinder TwinAir in 2011 and Volkswagen’s 1.4-litre TSI Twincharger taking the title in 2009 and 2010. To debut in Australia later this year in both the EcoSport SUV and updated Fiesta light hatch, Ford’s 92kW 999cc turbocharged triple secured 479 points – the highest overall score in the event’s 15-year history – to be well ahead of VW’s latest 1.4 TSI ‘ACT’ – with cylinder deactivation technology – on 408 points. Well back in third place on 247 points was BMW’s 2.0-litre twinturbo four, just ahead of Porsche’s 2.7-litre direct-injection flat-six – 245 – and Ferrari’s 6.3-litre V12 – 233. Further afield were BMW/PSA Peugeot Citroen’s 1.6-litre turbo-petrol four, McLaren’s 3.8-litre V8 and Audi’s 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine. It has a block so small and light that it could technically be taken as carry-

on luggage as demonstrated in a marketing stunt by Ford last year. Meanwhile, the established VW 1.4 TSI Twincharger defended its title in the 1.0-1.4-litre segment, the 1.4 TSI ACT took out the ‘best new engine’ class – beating the Ferrari V12 – and Fiat became the first car-maker to secure the ‘best green engine’ category with an alternative-fuel engine – a compressed natural gas version of the 875cc two-pot TwinAir.

The 458 Italia/Spider’s 4.5-litre V8 finished second in the performance engine stakes, narrowly ahead of the McLaren MP4-12C’s 3.8-litre V8 – an engine that was the undisputed standout in the 3.0-4.0-litre class and can propel the British supercar to 333km/h. The Audi 2.5 five-cylinder turbo claimed the 2.0-2.5-litre category (ahead of Mazda’s acclaimed 2.2-litre SkyActiv diesel), while Porsche topped the 2.5-3.0 class with the silky 2.7 boxer used in Boxster and Cayman. While all of this year’s awards were won by petrol engines, the program did recognise 10 diesels, three hybrids and even the all-electric powertrain developed by Tesla Motors in runner-up places.

Pulsar puts a smile on your dial A

lot of people are glad to see the Pulsar return to Australia.

It’s not just us saying that by the way, but also Nissan, which now admits it threw the baby out with the bathwater when it dropped the name seven years ago.

The sedan version is already here – it launched in January – and despite not being a class-leader in any department but cabin space, has swiftly hit sales levels higher than the dearly departed Tiida.

But its not so much this base price we are really interested in. Rather, its those hot turbocharged versions further up the range – the $24,990 ST-S and the $29,240 SSS. Australians buy a disproportionate number of hot hatches compared to other markets – some brands report a quarter of their sales of a given model are the sporty version – and Nissan’s return to the SSS moniker is sure to resonate with boy racers who’ve missed it in its long absence. Under the bonnet of both the ST-S and SSS sits a turbocharged

The engine has less power than, say those in the Cruze, Mazda3 and Hyundai 30, but is willing enough. It is, however, hobbled with a CVT that occasionally fusses and fidgets to get the right ratio, especially on an incline.

And Nissan has in essence done that with one hand tied behind its back. But not any more, because the hatch is the other piece of the Pulsar puzzle. Together, the two versions are expected to give the i30 and Cruze a run for the money on the sales charts. On paper, the hatch makes better buying. More Australians buy this bodystyle to begin with, but then Nissan has gone and priced it from $18,990 - $500 less than any major rival and $1000 less than the equivalent sedan.

regular ST-L, which is powered by the same 96kW/174Nm 1.8-litre engine as used in the sedan. Ours had the optional $2250 CVT automatic transmission, taking the price out to $24,740.

As with the sedan, the cabin is more spacious than average, with truly excellent rear seat room. Unlike the sedan, the rear seats also fold down to liberate more cargo space.

Cabin well-made but a bit dreary, no Bluetooth audio streaming on lower grades, vague steering on SSS, CVT fussy on hills. 140kW/240Nm 1.6-litre engine matched to a six-speed manual gearbox or a CVT with token paddle shifters. It’s a punchy little number, with no perceptible lag and a willingness to rev out past 6000rpm at the drop of a hat. It also has a meaty torque curve, with all 240Nm available down at 2000rpm. Nissan hasn’t given us the numbers, but a colleague and yours truly clocked a 7.9 second 0-100km/h sprint time on a damp road, which is nothing to be sneezed at. We are also fans of the short-stack manual shifter, which pairs up well with the meaty little engine, and the ride quality on 17-inch alloy wheels, which is compliant without being

bouncy. Nissan tweaked the damper rates on the SSS, but hasn’t said exactly how. However, the rest of the dynamic package isn’t quite as needle sharp. We drove both the ST-S and SSS in manual guise, and each exhibited the same vague electric steering feel as the entry versions, the same propensity for tyre scrubbing understeer right at the limit, and the same hints of bodyroll and axle tramp. The cheaper but similarly swift 132kW Holden Cruze SRi and SRiV turbo versions, which have had more substantial local calibration that the Pulsar, are ultimately sharper drives. Still, the warmed-up Pulsars are sharp value and plenty swift for the money.

But at this price point we’d like to see a touchscreen interface, Bluetooth audio streaming and reversing camera, which feature – or are at least available – on some similarly priced rivals.

Cabin fit and finish is decent too. The cheap faux metal highlights aren’t great, and the overall design is a touch dowdy, but it feels like it’s built to last.

So, how to sum up this Pulsar range?

The SSS gets a boy racer bodykit, leather seats, dual-zone climate control, six-speaker audio system that includes Bluetooth streaming, an excellent touchscreen satellite navigation system, reversing camera, and keyless entry and start – not bad for the money.

The base versions have heaps of space and are well-priced, but also compete against some high-quality rivals. Nissan will need that strong nameplate to wrest sales from Toyota, Mazda, Holden and Hyundai.

The ST-S, though, is the real bangfor-bucks option. It lacks the aforementioned equipment – the deletion of Bluetooth audio streaming is poor – but is just as quick.

The SSS and ST-S, meanwhile, give the range some welcome edge, with an excellent turbo engine. They’re not precision tools, but will still put a smile on your dial.
