Wimmera Development Association executive director Jo Bourke said events such as Horsham Country Music Festival, set to attract big crowds this weekend, were solid socio-economic indicators. She said large events and community activities usually required many people to volunteer their services which then led to considerable socialising, networking, celebrating and promotion.

“It brings visitors to the region and lifts the regional profile by telling a simple story that, in essence, this is a nice place to live.” Horsham Country Music Festival, featuring a lengthy list of professional and amateur artists, kicks off today and continues until Sunday. An ACE Radio Country Music Spectacular at Sawyer Park on Saturday headlines the weekend.

Stimulant Horsham Mayor David Grimble agreed that the country music festival would be a major economic stimulant for Horsham.

“These types of events are very positive indicators of very healthy communities,” she said.

“It’s establishing itself as a great community event and being based at Sawyer Park it promotes one of the best aspects of our city. These sort of events are super,” he said.

“With the country music festival there is an obvious economic benefit with people coming to visit and staying a few days plus the stimulus from activity provided by local groups with catering, event management and logistics.

THUMPER BOOSTS CANOLA YIELD IN WESTERN VIC AFTER becoming frustrated with the inconsistent quality and increasing costs of gypsum, Laurie and Tristan Ritchie, Lake Bolac in Western Victoria, went searching for a better and more reliable source of sulphur for their canola crops. Armed with some advice from Westlake Fertiliser’s Scott Cameron, they tried Thumper, a compound fertiliser from Superfert Dongbu. Made by state of the art manufacturing technology, each Thumper fertiliser granule contains nitrogen, phosphorus and sulphur and, with a portion of each element in every granule, it provides an even distribution of nutrients throughout the paddock along with uptake. Superfert southern regional manager Phil Venus says Thumper was developed in response to grower feedback that they needed a higher performance fertiliser. Thumper’s sulphur content is in both the

sulphate and elemental forms, ensuring the crop receives an immediate boost as well as sustained release during the growing season. “To have N, P and S next to the seed and evenly distributed across the paddock maximises the ability of the plant to achieve its yield potential,” Phil said. The Ritchies sowed Thumper with the seed at a rate of 120 kilograms a hectare, followed by two applications of urea during the growing season totalling 140kg/ha. Their canola varieties - Stingray, Gem (TT) and Zircon conventional - averaged 3.45 tonnes/ha at 46 per cent oil. This was a premium of about 600kg/ha above the district average and 1t/ha above the previous season’s National Variety Trial long-term average for mid-triazine canola at Streatham, Vic. “We have been blown away with the results,” Laurie said. “I can’t see us going back to gypsum at all.

t is Cultural Diversity Week in Victoria and the state is awash with multicultural celebrations.

It is the week where organisations such as Oasis Wimmera, involved with migrant work, realise their project outcomes after toiling for months; a week where community groups easily coexist without resentment or guilt, a week where tolerance, understanding and cultural awareness is at a high; a week where even jaded cynics like me get emotional seeing the positive and generous community response towards a multicultural festival. It is also the week where jargon flows in abundance – ‘Cultural and Linguistically Diverse’ groups, ‘unity in diversity’, ‘cultural pluralism’, ‘mosaic’, ‘multiculturalism’, ‘ethnic fusion’ and so on. It is also the week where perhaps political agendas that use immigration issues as red herrings are momentarily set aside. In short, this week is the Mecca of multicultural charm – an epitome of co-existence and harmony; though some might argue it is more contrived than natural. However, as with any celebration, as soon as festivities are over, the spirit

Likewise, when Cultural Diversity week is over, the appreciation of multiculturalism is also packed up and the debate over the melting pot or salad bowl continues. Everyday life, fraught with hectic schedules and personal agendas, pushes cultural awareness and tolerance to the backseat. It is only a handful of government agencies and organisations and a few religious and not-for-profit organisations that focus on immigration and settlement that continue to promote cultural diversity. Multiculturalism in general is seen as a challenge and perhaps even a barrier in everyday life, sometimes irrespective of which camp one belongs.

Libraries But there is one unassuming institution that opens its doors wide to everyone and performs a huge service to migrants and is not always recognised or appreciated. Have you ever dropped in at your local library and reflected on how much

Given me and my children’s avid interest in reading, we are regular library visitors. Used to borrowing only two books on a card in huge and silent mausoleums under strict and authoritarian librarians in India, I was ecstatic to learn that I could borrow books and other materials without limits in Australian libraries. I was equally thrilled when I learnt I could get books and movies in Indian languages from the libraries for my mother, another voracious reader, while she was visiting. Later I discovered that libraries here were more than just a resource centre. Especially after moving to Horsham, I understood first-hand that libraries were community centres and a first stop for migrants. It gladdens my heart when I see new arrivals visiting the library with their families. Whether it is enhancing their knowledge of English or promoting reading habits of their children or making use of the internet facility or just spending time with their families, the library is versatile in meeting their needs. In most communities, libraries turn into a secure haven where people mingle without much inhibition or intimidation.

Terracotta warriors at Toys Garden Restaurant in Horsham have timed their ‘appearance’ to perfection, ‘coming to life’ in brilliant colour for Cultural Diversity Week. The two rare 240-kilogram terracotta warriors, which restaurant owner Leon Toy bought from a Great Wall of China Exhibition in Melbourne about 10 years ago, have stood in the restaurant quietly overlooking patrons. Mr Toy has long been keen to give the warriors a ‘new lease of life’ and took on the project with help from Horsham artist Amabile DalfarraSmith. The pair researched the dress code and uniforms of warriors designed to guard the emperor Xin from 2000 years ago and applied what they found out in meticulous detail. “What we found in painting the warriors was that the detail in the terracotta statues was really quite intricate. “We can keep on achieving great results if we have the support of the community to keep investing in our programs and infrastructure.” The rehabilitative therapist said Rural Northwest Health wanted to build a pergola for the unit and a small men’s shed for Wattle’s backyard. “Those two items are our number one goal for now. If we can keep on making improvements to Wattle, we can continue to raise the bar and be the benchmark to which Australia’s other aged-care facilities aspire.”

ararat ruralcity focus Council focus Community Vision 2030 Residents are being asked to put their thinking caps on and have their say about the future as Community Vision 2030 postcards are distributed and listening post meetings held. Mayor Cr Ian Wilson urged everyone to get involved in the development of the Community Vision 2030 document and the 2013-2017 Council Plan, which will outline strategic priorities for the future of their municipality and help guide Council decision making. “Council wants to hear what residents have to say so we can develop the best documents possible,” Cr Wilson said. “The Council is looking forward to hearing what residents and ratepayers think, and we’re really excited to see how they want their municipality to look in 2030. I encourage everyone to get involved to help influence our future direction.” Every resident in the municipality is being given the chance to be part of the Community Vision 2030 through the listening posts and the postcards, which will be mailed to every household. People have the chance to win an iPad by filling in the postcards, which cover the Council’s four pillars – community, lifestyle, economy and environment. Cr Wilson said listening posts are currently being held in eight locations around the municipality so the Council can gather as many views as possible. “Residents can drop into their nearest listening post and chat to Councillors about their vision for the municipality,” he said. “The information gathered from the postcards and the listening posts will be collated and fed into the development of the Community Vision 2030 and the 2013-2017 Council Plan. The more people we hear from the better – this is your opportunity to contribute to creating a positive, bright future for our municipality.” Other community engagement activities being held as part of the development of Community Vision 2030 will include a poster competition for primary school children, meetings with Student Representative Councils and a Futures Forum. Ararat Outdoor Olympic Pool potential redevelopment The Ararat Outdoor Olympic Pool is located to the West of the Alexandra Gardens adjacent to the Alexandra Lake. Built in 1958, the pool and associated pool buildings are in poor condition and no longer comply with current regulations for this type of facility. As a result this facility has been closed since 2011. The Ararat Rural City Council is working with specialist consultants in pool development to establish accurate costings. Following extensive community consultation Council will determine whether or not to proceed with the redevelopment of the outdoor pool at its present location. Council is currently working with interested parties from the community in the development of these potential plans. The consultants have presented a commercial costing of around $2.9 million for the proposed upgrade. Some of the works required for the pool to be operational again include a new plant room and associated plumbing and electrical works, construction of a wet deck, replacement of pipe work and filtering systems, repairs to the pool shell as well as improvements to access and concrete areas around the pool. The cost also includes the upgrade of the change rooms, toilets and kiosk and to construct a water play area as part of the redevelopment.The water play area is being designed to ensure safety for small children. The existing building that accommodates the change rooms and toilets no longer comply to current regulations, and don’t provide accessible access therefore a new amenity building to house these services is being developed. While a group of interested community members are working on fund raising (and collecting a list of works that might be able to be carried out with voluntary labour) it is clear that the vast majority of the funds needed for this redevelopment will have to come from rates. It must be noted that grant funds are not likely to become available for these type of facilities through State or Federal Governments.

Alexandra Oval proposed redevelopment Once constructed, the Alexandra Oval precinct will become the regions premier community hub, particularly with the recent grant funds allocated by the Victorian Government, and with hopes for further funds from our current RDA application to the Federal Government. These funds will be used to construct a $3.3million state of the art community facility on the north-east side of the pre-existing OIver Stand. Ararat Rural City Council will consider making further contributions to the project in the 2013/14 budget, conditional upon receiving the Federal Government RDA funding. Ararat Community Enterprise, and other community groups have also committed to raise further funds in order to complete the facility. The planned facility will comprise of a multipurpose room accommodating over 200 seated patrons, a commercial kitchen, bar and canteen facilities, meeting rooms, female change rooms, home and away club rooms (with trainers facilities) and male and female umpire change rooms. The Alexandra Oval Committee of Management is very keen to have other community groups use the building, and believe it will fill a void that exists at the moment. It is the Committee of Management’s task to raise additional funds in order to complete the facility. This will be done through a range of fundraising initiatives within the community. Ararat Rural City Council in conjunction with the Committee of Management are working with Moreton Dunn Architects to further develop the plans.

Disc seeders shine at no-till demo day Farmers from across central western Victoria braved searing temperatures for a Victorian No Till Farmers Association’s Disc Seeding Demo Day at Longerenong.

More than 130 farmers from across western Victoria and Longerenong College students keen for knowledge about advances in disc-seeding technology attended the event at the college. Manufacturers from Bourgault, Excel, NDF, John Deere, Serafin, KHart and Ryan Farm Machinery outlined how their disc seeders worked and farmers and the students saw first-hand how they worked with urea-placement demonstrations. Victorian No-Till Farmers Asso-

ciation president Wayne Adler said disc seeding was a method proving successful as part of no-till farming systems.

He said the turnout was testament to the thirst for information and knowledge across the state’s farming community on farming systems that focussed on improving soil health. The event started with guest speakers in Longerenong Hall, followed by a two-hour paddock demonstration. “The Wimmera certainly turned on some hot weather for us and we thought it might keep some people away. But they just kept arriving and arriving until the hall was full,” Mr Adler said. Mr Adler said speakers provided

information about technology that was still in its infancy in this part of Australia.

“During the past five years the changes and advancement in discseeding technology has exploded whereas up until that point its growth was quite slow,” he said. Guest speakers included Dean Johns from Bayer, disc-seeding expert and author Jack Desbiolles, Mr Adler and association vice-president Steve Lanyon from Boort, the first in his district to adopt the discseeding technology. Migrant support agency Oasis Wimmera, in celebrating Cultural Diversity Week, has organised a free-of-charge Dance for Diversity showcase from 3pm at Wesley Performing Arts Centre. The regional event, promoting tolerance, understanding and acceptance of the many cultures in the Wimmera, follows the successful theme of a Horsham United Musical Mayhem project from last year’s Art Is... festival. As well as promoting cultural exchange between people, the event will also launch a new direction for Youth Performing Arts in the Wimmera. The college, Salvation Army and Wimmera Uniting Care will launch the project next month. St Brigid’s College Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning coordinator Lesley Lannen said Monday Munchies was a lunch for people under 26 at Horsham’s Salvation Army Hall each week.

Association to promote region

Wimmera Development Association will again use a Regional Living Expo in Melbourne to promote the Wimmera and southern Mallee to metropolitan audiences. It also wants help to ‘maximise the potential’ of the April 19 to 21 event in spreading information about the region. Association project officer Tammy McDonald said the event provided a unique opportunity to promote job vacancies and businesses for sale to people keen to relocate from large metropolitan centres to regional communities.

“The expo will attract people who are considering moving to or investing in regional Victoria and there will be significant advertising of the event by the Victorian Government,” she said. “More than 8000 people attended the 2012 Regional Victoria Living Expo. Indigenous architect designing new café

ictoria’s only registered Indigenous architect Jefa Greenaway is designing a new café for Horsham.

“The project seeks to project culture through built form while remaining honest in its role as purveyor of fine coffee and fresh food,’’ Mr Greenaway said. “The cafe also aims to be both family friendly and a welcoming stop for travellers, ensuring provisions for contemporary and connected individuals, be it through WiFi connections, phone-charging hub, flat-screen TVs, a kids’ corner, change table and outdoor areas for smokers and sun-seekers.’’

The café, next to land council offices at the south end of Firebrace Street, has a directive to offer high-quality service, coffee and healthy food. Plans designed to incorporating Indigenous culture with modern ideas show how the café will feature timber-look stone flooring and stainless bench tops complemented by warm colours and furnishings.

Artists Barengi Gadjin Land Council chief executive Jim Golden-Brown said the café would also feature the work of Victorian Indigenous artists, selling art, craft, music and books.

Alves to speak at sports night F

ormer St Kilda coach, VFL premiership player and Brownlow Medal runner-up Stan Alves OAM will speak at a Horsham RSL Diggers sports night and jumper presentation next month. Mr Alves, who played 226 games for Melbourne and 40 for North Melbourne and took the Saints took their first grand final in 26 years, will be a guest at Horsham RSL club on April 17. Horsham RSL Diggers and Horsham RSL subbranch are working together

The theme of the evening will be mental toughness and sacrifice in sport. RSL Diggers president Peter Miller said Mr Alves, who like the football club had an historic connection to the game and returned servicemen, had an ‘inspirational story to tell’. “He will give great insight into the game and aspects involving mental toughness,” he said. Homers have poured on the runs in their last two digs, on two occasions against Laharum and including a big semifinal run-chase for victory last week. There is no question that all-rounder Chris Hopper, who made a rapid-fire 150 last Sunday, is in red-hot form and with disciplined backbone opener Sandy Hodge leads a formidable batting top order. Although he did last weekend, skipper Lachie Jones rarely fails at number three, Hodge’s opening partner Jason Templeton loves the cut and thrust of finals, Simon Hopper is a luxury at number five and Adam Atwood sits in the wings when quick runs are required. The grand final will also unfold at a carpet-like Horsham City Oval where if the wicket behaves like it did last week will produce a lot of runs. South-west Saints seek success I

t came with a rush and suddenly Edenhope-Apsley was there – playing off for a Horsham District Football League premiership. Some might consider EdenhopeApsley’s loss to Kalkee in last year’s grand final a prime example of ‘the one that got away’. Or was it that the Saints’ arrival as a competition was slightly premature? The Saints, who captured the imagination of the football-loving public in the Wimmera’s southwest last year, again loom as topthree contenders. This time Mal Coutts and James Dixon are in charge of a spirited senior group that will attempt to carry on the premiership campaign.

been fantastic but realistically we might have been a little ahead of ourselves,” he said. Mr Close added that while premierships remained the ultimate measure of club success, they remained far from the driving force behind the Saints.

Edenhope-Apsley president Laurie Close agreed that for the group to reach the grand final last year after missing the finals altogether the previous year had ‘happened very quickly’.

“The simple aim is to have a sustainable football and netball club – that’s what we’re trying to put in place. It’s important to establish foundations for a strong, viable club that can continually provide sport in our community,” he said.

“Obviously we were disappointed but in saying that I don’t know if we were quite ready. For the club it was a new experience. We hadn’t played finals for many years. To win would have

“If you don’t have things in place properly it’s a bit like trying to grow crops on infertile soil. If the base isn’t right you will struggle to get a good crop and will end up chasing rainbows,” he said.

“It’s invariably like simply shifting a mob of sheep from one paddock to another and then saying the new paddock is going well when in fact the mob hasn’t grown at all.

“We’ve tried to make the club more than just a sporting organisation. It’s about establishing a base where people can come and feel comfortable.”

“Obviously we have players coming into the club but we haven’t been banging on doors in Horsham.

Philosophy Mr Close said part of the consolidation process was reflected in a developing recruiting philosophy that involved pursuing players who had traditional connections with the club. “We have made a concerted effort to make sure the majority of players we pursue are home grown,” he said. “We make every effort to encourage people to come back and play with us and yes there have been financial incentives. But in most cases this applies to players who have somehow made previous contributions to the club. “The danger of going out and approaching every footballer across the Wimmera becomes a case of simply pinching players and not actually growing football. It’s one of my personal frustrations.

“We’ll be competitive and, like running any footy club or business, will be disappointed if we’re not better than last year.” Joint coach Mal Coutts said the expectation was for the Saints to again make the finals and preseason of late had gone from consolidating and fine-tuning a game plan. “What we identified from last year is that we didn’t have enough experienced guys who had played finals. Instead of trying to recruit willy nilly we’ve tried to pick four or five guys to strengthen our list and I believe we’ve done that,” he said. Midfielder Billy Christie, a friend of Dave McLeish, forward Will Smith, returning from Alice Springs, Carl Obst and super-experienced former Ballarat League premiership player Hayden Cartledge will play with the Saints this year.

or some regional footy fans it seems like only yesterday that Horsham Saints made the boldest of moves to step up a gear and shift into Wimmera Football League. Yet this year marks the 20th anniversary of the daring decision which involved the then St Michaels putting everything from long-time supporters and sponsors to even the club’s future on the line. The Saints’ move, following a trail blazed by Imperials-Wonwondah years earlier, represented a developing club maturity and desire to be something more than the ‘local parish team’. The rest is history with the Saints providing or at being the heart of some of the greatest moments in the contemporary history of the competition. But the one critical trophy that has continually eluded the camp from the shadows of Meadowbank at Coughlin Park in its two decades at major-league level is a senior premiership. The absence of a flag protrudes from the Saints’ modern history like a painful thorn in a lion’s foot, preventing the beast from producing that roar of come-of-age confidence

and satisfaction that grand-final wins produce. They remain the only club in the competition without a premiership. Saints coach Brendan Broadbent made note of the circumstance this week as he provided The Weekly Advertiser with insight into his club’s preparations for the 2013 season. “It’s quite a contentious issue and I’ve spoken about in the pre-season,” he said. “We haven’t been able to push through that ceiling. We’ve played in several grand finals in Wimmera League and haven’t won any of them. On the 20th anniversary of being in the league we have to look at our previous performances and maybe think outside the box to help

us push through. “It’s been an issue, we’ve never gone into a final as a red-hot favourite and that comes down to building a team and getting all the right elements of a team together.” Broadbent suggested that the finals formula in creating a premiership team usually involved getting a mix of experienced players, young veterans in their early 20s and emerging youngsters together. “We have that mix this year and the hope is that it can translate on the ground and into performances,” he said.

Excitement Broadbent said the Saints introduced a free-flowing style into their game to accommodate a crop of young players last year and this year would again be about adapting plans to suit personnel. “The build-up basically started at the end of the last year shortly after our guys dipped out of the finals. There’s a fair bit of excitement around considering all kids who have been exposed to senior footy. What is really exciting is that a lot of the senior guys have been buoyed by that and have made a commitment to stick together.” Horsham Saints will analyse playing styles in a three-way roundrobin practice-match series in War-

“We’ve certainly added some bigger bodies to the list and some of the young kids we played last year have grown up and have elevated fitness levels from training with the North Ballarat Rebels,” Broadbent said. Experienced Gavin and Heath Kelm and Pat Knott are returning to the club this year, Addison Milner is shifting from Edenhope-Apsley, Dennis Adams from NoradjuhaQuantong is on the list and Lachie De Morton from Golden Rivers League has joined the Saints. A ‘bigger and stronger’ Steve Cameron is also back after a knee injury last year and Toohey Medallist Phil Butsch, overcoming serious illness, has been training. Broadbent said the club was looking forward to the continued progression from the likes of Jacob Cooke-Harrison and Nathan Byrne and had high hopes for young players such as Jacob O’Beirne, James Richards, Keegan Mellington, Darcy Tucker, Jake McIntyre and Jesse Hatcher who has joined the club from Minyip-Murtoa.

IT’S ON: Yacht club commodores Peter Knights from Stawell, left, and Mark Johns, Horsham, rekindle a friendly club rivalry dating back to the 1960s before racing at Green Lake. Stawell sailors, who won the first clash between the clubs at Lake Fyans earlier this year, continued their winning form last weekend. The contest included 13 boats in two divisions and Stawell won both with Jan Ibs von Seht winning a mono section and Ross Bennett a catamaran division.

Up-and-coming apprentice jockey Carryn Downie is quickly making a name for herself in the Victorian riding ranks. This continued last Sunday at the Ararat meeting when she was aboard Tequila Queen for her master, Kyneton trainer Danny Curran. The duo was in a restricted sprinting event over 1100 metres carrying a prize purse of $15,000. With the young hoop showing recent good form in the saddle, Wimmera punters expected a bold showing. This was reflected as Tequila Queen was the most popular elect on course just before start time. As soon as the starter released the nine-horse field Downie made the quick decision to restrain her mount and settle at the rear. In a good display of patient riding Downie started to angle the daughter of Invincible Spirit to the extreme outside just before straightening for the run home. Tequila Queen found her way to the outside running rail which appeared to be the better ground. The five-year-old mare accelerated strongly in the favourable conditions in the home straight to score a comprehensive two-and-a-half length victory. The win was Tequila Queen’s fourth for career earnings of $61,000.

Yendall dominates again Horsham jockey Dean Yendall’s red-hot season continued last Sunday at the Ararat meeting, booting home a winning treble. Dean kicked things off early combining with former Warrnambool, now Caulfield based, trainer Ciaron Maher to ride his filly Nullabar Belle to a three-length victory in the opening event. Yendall soon added to his tally when he combined with leading Victorian country trainer Darren Weir to boot home ‘good thing’ Sutanoc in the feature event, accounting for his two rivals easily to win by four lengths. The final leg of Yendall’s ‘three-peat’ came in the last event again combining with Weir’s ultra impressive galloper Reddamour who absolutely bolted in with an awesome display, recording a winning margin of almost six lengths. The Horsham hoop’s latest treble takes him to the top of the tree in the Australian Jockey’s Premiership with 107 winners for the season, leapfrogging Melbourne’s Brad Rawiller on 103 wins. Yendall is well on track to reclaim the title he won almost two years ago.

The Club Leadership Project aims to prepare the next generation of leaders in the region’s clubs and associations through a intensive training program. Topics in the program include how to be an effective committee member, event

and risk management and future club development. WRSA executive officer David Berry said the modules were being delivered by Volunteering Western Victoria staff with expertise in the field. “As well as theory, there will be a practical component to the training, with participants also picking up skills in sports first aid, taping, Responsible Service of Alcohol and level-one coaching,” he said. “Apart from the skills they receive by way of training and course work, the

participants will also be engaged by their club or association to perform some work around their club.” Mr Berry said clubs interested in participating in the project in 2013 should express their interest to WRSA by contacting project co-ordinator Matthew Berry on 5382 4599.

“Only 12 positions are available in the program, so interested clubs should act swiftly to ensure their youngsters don’t miss out,” he said.

Back-to-back for St Mary’s Warracknabeal club St Mary’s is celebrating consecutive Wimmera-Mallee Cricket A Grade premierships after holding on to defeat St Arnaud at the weekend. The reigning premiers took a 90-run lead into the final day on Saturday and thanks to an unbeaten 74 from allrounder Peter Lehmann were able to build the gap to 253 before St Arnaud conceded the match. Tim Bell earned back-to-back grand-final ‘man of the match’ honours, scoring 39 runs and taking five wickets in the first innings victory.

Great Wall to launch passengers T

he distributor of Australia’s most popular Chinese car brand aims to almost double sales volume by the end of 2014 as it embarks on an ambitious expansion into passenger cars.

China, and Ateco admits one of the reasons for the switch was Volvo’s trademark of the C30 name here.

ONE OF FOUR: Great Wall importer Ateco says the C50 sedan – to be called VX50 here – will be on-sale in 2014 with a small turbo petrol engine.

Rather than offer a VX30 sedan, Ateco will instead offer the Cruze-sized VX50, which as we have reported is expected to be powered by a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine producing a respectable 98kW and 188Nm engine matched with a five-speed manual gearbox or optional continuously variable automatic transmission.

According to independent importer Ateco Automotive, Great Wall will add four models in three segments – light, small and crossover SUV – and attain a running rate of 20,000 annual sales by the end of 2014.

The car, known as the C50 in China, is available with electronic stability control – now mandatory in Australia – plus side and curtain airbags, tyre pressure monitoring, anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution, and doors that automatically unlock after a crash.

For point of reference, the projected sales figure is more than non-comparable brands Jeep, BMW or Audi sold here last year, and less than 5000 units shy of Suzuki.

Facelift First off the blocks will be a facelifted version of the Toyota Yaris-sized – and similarly styed – VX10, which will launch in the third quarter of this year priced around $13,000 – almost two years behind schedule. Ateco spokesman Daniel Cotterill said the VX10 would feature six airbags and stability control from launch, but stopped short of saying it would be Australia’s first five-star ANCAP Chinese car. Joining the VX10 by year’s end will be a monocoque crossover SUV called H6, which will start a staggered roll-out from the fourth quarter.

oyota’s fourth-generation RAV4 soft-roader has put the legacy of its past behind it, earning a top safety rating from the crash test watchdog.

Holden reworks hot turbo Cruze H

olden has thrown its engineers behind a facelift for the Australian-built Cruze smallcar in a bid to woo more buyers, while a warmer turbo version adds some appeal for enthusiasts.

However, satellite navigation is missing from the range until midyear as a new system is being developed in tandem with the VF Commodore. Expect it to be standard on the SRi-V at the very least come June.

It may look no different, but the updated Adelaide-built Cruze sedan and hatch is substantially tweaked under the skin and – perhaps more crucially – will be substantially cheaper to buy when it hits showrooms in early April, with a razor-sharp starting price of $19,490 plus on-road costs. Along with the price cut, which pitches it at the heart of the likes of Toyota’s Corolla and the Mazda3, comes a longer list of standard features – the Cruze also becomes the first Australian-made car to get GM’s MyLink infotainment system with seven-inch touchscreen on all variants, including the renamed entrylevel Equipe. Holden has added some welcome sizzle and spice to what has been perceived as a prosaic offering with the introduction of a pair of hotter performance variants powered by the Opel Astra’s 132kW/230Nm 1.6-litre turbo engine, and priced from a tempting $22,490 in SRi guise. Sure to throw the cat among the warm-car pigeons, the SRi and its better-equipped SRi-V 1.6 turbo sibling – from $26,490 – easily under-

The company won’t talk specific sales targets, but makes no bones about its need to boost sales to well above their current levels. Cruze volume is down 36.8 percent this year, and was down 13.7 percent for 2012 – although this was enough to finish third in small-car sales. With a host of Japanese and Korean rivals selling at 1990s prices thanks to strong exchange rates, Holden reacted by cutting $2000 from the starting price of the entry variant,

dubbed Equipe rather than CD as its predecessor was known. The resultant $19,490 figure undercuts rivals such as the Toyota Corolla and the recently launched Nissan Pulsar – both $19,990, Hyundai i30 – $20,990 and Mazda3 – $20,330. Extra standard equipment over the outgoing CD includes 17-inch alloys, front fog lights, rear parking sensors and the new seven-inch touchscreen with MyLink connectivity and access to internet radio and streaming services Pandora and Stitcher – already included in high-end versions of the Barina, but a first for an Australianmade car.

Drivetrains at this level are unchanged, with the cheapest versions retaining the 104kW/175Nm 1.8-litre EcoTec petrol unit matched to a fivespeed manual or the $2200 more expensive ‘second-generation’ sixspeed automatic transmission. Next Mitsubishi Triton targets five-star safety Mitsubishi has revealed that the next-generation Triton utility and its Challenger SUV offshoot that will be unveiled sometime next year, will be the safest ever, with a predicted fivestar crash-test rating.

Ford’s agile new Fiesta T

Off-roading on Patrol N

issan has departed from the utilitarian, rough-and-tumble style of its Y61 Patrol, which lives on as the brand’s less expensive diesel option in similar style to the D22 and D40 Navara utes.

This replaces traditional sway bars and shock absorbers with a fluid-filled network of pistons, pipes and accumulators that both reduce body roll and increase wheel articulation.

Interior Inside the Patrol is better than outside. We do not usually comment on a vehicle’s styling but we dislike its slabby, flabby, strangely rounded look that is also slightly ostentatious and tacky. The huge external dimensions – 5140mm long, 1995mm wide and 1940mm high – make the Y62 bigger than a LandCruiser 200 and yield plenty of interior space, including limo-like legroom for the centre row and respectable amounts of space for the three-seat third bench. Yes this thing seats eight, perfect for the fertile or the popular. Although potential breeding partners or friends may be put off by the looks. The Patrol is a comfortable, quiet place to be. Everything feels solid and well made, but we were not convinced by the swathes of wood trim and the only colour scheme is 90s bachelor pad black. The seats are like vast armchairs and although the number of storage options is limited, what does exist is of the large variety, such as the door bins, glove-box and bin beneath the central arm-rest. We tested the Patrol during hot weather and its powerful air-con system cooled down that black interior in no time, helped by activating the rear vents that blow cool air across the windows, killing heat from the hot Australian sun before it enters the cabin. Apart from serving as a display for the excellent reversing camera, the Patrol’s central screen is a bit pointless in that there is no sat-nav, a glaring omission given it is available on the $28,900 Pulsar Ti.

dated and while we’re complaining, the indicators have no lane-change function, we dislike the old-school foot-operated parking brake and the massive centre row head restraints spoil good visibility. Folding down the rear seats to turn the Patrol into a luxury van is easy, as is access to the rearmost row, helped by the centre row’s fold and tumble action.

Engine and transmission Bad news. The Patrol devours fuel from its 140-litre tank like there is no tomorrow, while making tomorrow less likely given the prospect of climate change and international unrest once the crude oil runs out. Officially it consumes 14.5 litres per 100 kilometres. Mainly suburban driving resulted in an average approaching 20L/100km, off-roading caused it to gulp an astonishing 30L/100km and during an hour of driving in city congestion, the trip computer reported upward of 40L/100km. On a relatively flat freeway run at a constant 100km/h we saw an agreeable 10L/100km. Be in no doubt, this thing will require regular $200 fill-ups of 95 RON premium unleaded, so get saving those supermarket dockets. But the engine is an absolute gem, emitting an exotic V8 howl without ever being intrusive and packing plenty of punch in a smooth, effortless and refined manner. It means the Patrol is always sprightly and responsive and has more than enough go for hauling this almost three-tonne beast across off-road obstacles. Tackling a set of sweeping turns in third gear it positively whizzes along, with instantaneous responses that can only come from a powerful, free-revving naturally aspirated V8.

Ride and handling Having recently driven the all-new Range Rover, the Patrol stacks up impressively well in the ride and handling department, especially this Ti variant with its fancy suspension system.

Ironically for such a thirsty vehicle, the screen’s primary use appears to be displaying – in numerous formats – how much fuel the 5.6-litre V8 is slurping, in addition to readouts on the multi-function trip computer in the instrument pack.

Attack a set of fast, sweeping bends and the Patrol feels more composed than the Rangie, and the speed-sensitive steering that is soft and fluffy round town becomes perfectly weighted, brilliantly direct and pin-point accurate – better than the Range Rover’s woolly feeling helm.

vealed a surprising nimbleness and adjustability on the throttle, with powerful brakes, rock-solid stability and loads of grip building confidence. It all makes the Patrol feel much smaller than it is and is truly impressive for any SUV, let alone one this big. The stability control system can get a bit intrusive, slowing the vehicle down rather than just helping keep it on the desired line but let’s face it, it is better to be safe than sorry in a big, hefty top-heavy vehicle. Ride quality is pretty much spot on, ironing out almost all undulations and exhibiting none of the small bump shudder the Range Rover’s otherwise wonderfully wafty air suspension transmits into the cabin. Despite continuing with a separate chassis design, it blows other hardcore offroaders – that’s you, LandCruiser – into the weeds. We were able to go off-road in absolute comfort and the Patrol’s imperious indifference to obstacles just made everything look and feel so easy. So easy in fact that we fear it is all too easy to get out of one’s depth while offroading.

Verdict Nissan has again impressed us with its engineering prowess and ability to imbue its vehicles with an unshakeable sense of solidity. As much as we love the fantastic V8 in the Y61 Patrol for its fantastic sound effects, smooth power delivery and effortless nature we question the logic of offering this as sole engine option.
