Firm offers grand plan
A
Centres in 2010.
By DEAN LAWSON
Melbourne firm with plans to build multi-million-dollar ‘super farms’ to power electronic data-storage centres in regional Australia will welcome proposals or partnerships involving Wimmera communities. Sustain Data Centres chief executive Shane McDonald said his firm, which planned to launch pilot green-energy farm projects at Colac and Shepparton in the next two years, was open to approaches. He said the super-farm concept involved 500 to 1000-hectare sites that could produce solar, wind and biogas energy to run high-tech power-hungry data or ‘cloud’ warehouses. “We would have anchor centres in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane and nine satellite regional super farms. We have identified initial sites in Colac, Shepparton and Trafalgar and another three in both NSW and Queensland,” he said. “But if anyone in the Wimmera wants to get in touch to discuss what we are doing and how the Wimmera might fit in we would certainly make ourselves available. We have a lot of expertise to share.” Mr McDonald said individuals from various blue-chip organisations keen to ‘do things better’ formed Sustain Data
He said the firm, which specialises in warehouse rack-system data storage and processing, was committed to creating sustainable power to meet the needs of a rapidly growing and evolving industry.
Wednesday, July 24, 2013
The gas would be part of a three-pronged power-supply system that also used wind turbines and solar panels.
“Significantly, the future in data storage lies more in country areas than it does in the cities,” he said.
The farms would involve expansive milk-processing plants using district dairy farmers where available and a high dependence on water to keep the data centres cool would provide aquaculture opportunities.
“We have two types of data-centre systems. One is city-based co-location which involves clients coming with their own server equipment and us providing parking space in our rack rooms.
Despite the grand nature of the concept, Mr McDonald said he had a ‘100-percent belief’ the project would happen.
The labour-intensive nature of the farms would also provide hundreds of jobs.
“The other, which is where the industry is heading, involves clients renting computing power and data storage. This is perfect for satellite regional data centres and provides an opportunity to get off the grid to source renewable power.
He said the company had secured $360-million from a US backer with ‘more to come’ for the project.
“We’re talking about an industry that is experiencing 60 percent annual growth. To understand how this growth is escalating consider how much information is being stored through sites such as Facebook.
“It’s a bit of a struggle to get local funding but overseas there is a large amount of money available for renewable projects. A data centre is also part of a high-income growth industry,” he said.
“It is also lucrative because there is a huge demand and a lot of expertise involved.”
Mr McDonald said an anchor data centre in Melbourne was due to go ‘live’ in 12 to 18 weeks. The plan was to then to start rolling out the super farms.
The scale of the proposed super farms is enormous with the process involving several hundred head of housed dairy cattle providing waste to convert into biogas.

fund-raising night and auction at Horsham’s Cafe Jas involving actor Samuel Johnson and his Love Your Sister charity raised $20,000. The amount, supported by major sponsors MIXX FM, Momentum Financial Group, Bazlec Electrician, Dave McMaster, Emmetts and Amcal, was one of the largest individual donations Johnson’s project has attracted during his trek across Australia. Johnson is attempting to set a world record by unicycling 15,000 kilometres throughout Australia as well as raise $1-million for the
fight against breast cancer. His sister Connie, diagnosed with the disease, has provided inspiration for the project.
MIXX FM provided $1000 for the auction and the night which Sharron Keating from Cafe Jas said ‘exceeded all expectations’. “It was a great turn-out and well worth the effort to support such a great cause,” she said. “Horsham really turned it on, it was great night.” Earlier this week Johnson, in Horsham for the auction, had travelled 9143 kilometres and raised $599,766.

Grains grant helps Rupanyup students Every pupil at Rupanyup Primary School will have one-on-one access to a computer thanks to a $10,000 grant from GrainCorp’s Community Fund. The donation will go towards new iPads and netbooks, giving students access to specific applications to help strengthen their spelling, reading and maths skills. School principal Gavin Young said the school welcomed the donation. “For children in small schools that don’t have a large amount of funding, initiatives like this can make a big difference to enable enhanced educational opportunities they may have missed out on otherwise,” he said.
“We’ve also created an app for children to upload their projects and reports – an initiative that would have been very hard to achieve without GrainCorp’s support.”

Murtoa-based GrainCorp grain services manager David Drum said GrainCorp’s donation was part of its commitment to communities it operated. “Rupanyup and the surrounding area is an important region for GrainCorp and we feel very strongly about giving back to our local community,” he said. GrainCorp donates more than $400,000 per year through its community fund and provides financial support to organisations and projects that contribute to community development.

t would be easy to dismiss a Melbourne firm’s radical and grandiose plan to establish regional super farms to power data-storage centres as little more than ‘good in theory’. The concept, combining the latest technological advances in electronic data management, green energy and regional development, sounds too good to be true. We are, after all, talking about properties as large as 1000 hectares that support up to 9000 head of dairy cattle, fully functional milk-processing enterprises, power plants driven by a combination of solar, gas and biogas, airtight warehouses full of computer servers and up to 800 jobs.
But before we discount the idea as ‘pie in the sky’ we have a duty in the Wimmera to explore the potential of such concepts, regardless of how large or small. We would be guilty of serious negligence if we waved something like this off and then saw even only a small part of the idea become a reality in other regional Victorian areas. Sustain Data Centres claims it has up to $400-million from international backers for the project that includes establishing anchor data or ‘cloud’ centres in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane and building multi-million-dollar super farms, initially at Colac and Shepparton. Its chief executive Shane McDonald said he was also open to approaches from

Wimmera leaders keen to learn more. He was particularly interested in information about regional waste management where there was potential for gas extraction. But what’s it all about? To put it simply, data centres or warehouses store the growing mountain of electronic material we’re exchanging on the internet and through social media. They represent a massive and rapidly growing industry but are also power hungry and some analysts believe they are inappropriate for a metropolitan environment.
Potential There is no doubt we have space and sun and in some circumstances enough wind in the Wimmera to generate power for such an enterprise. We are also sitting on top of geothermal energy waiting for a project to justify the millions of dollars needed to tap
into this resource. Our farming communities also have a history of adaptation. Mr McDonald said Sustain Data Centres was driven by desire to help regional communities through sustainable practices but added that the company, considering the level of expertise involved, had the potential to make a lot of money. If it proves to be nothing more than a idea, the concept confirms that there is always plenty of scope for innovation and that some of the best proposals will always come from left field. It is up to us in the Wimmera to consider if we can establish an environment where any aspect of these ideas can work in or be adapted to our neck of the woods and gain traction.

As the saying goes: Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
YOUR SAY Roadside trash SIR,- In my opinion, Clean-up Australia Day efforts are just a drop in the bucket compared with the extent of trash landowners are permitted to accumulate on their properties. A recent train journey to Sydney sure was an eye opener for me and my fellow traveller, a visitor from America. She related the difference to her home state where eye-sore-rubbish-removal is mandatory and where such breaches occur, owners have the choice of voluntary action or are penalised with the cost of removal through official channels. Graffiti and vandalism aside and I don’t refer either to relics such as old wool shed or cottages weathering the test of
time, but why some people feel the need to accumulate disused cars, excess roofing, old building materials slapped together and just plain rubbish are reasoning beyond me. Even our car trip back from Melbourne was marred by unsightly roadside trash seeming to appear especially worse and never-ending from Ararat and Stawell to Horsham. Our own West Wimmera council recently made an upgrade to the Local Laws – Local Law 6 2012 Part 4 – that empowers it to assume responsibility to declutter our towns and countryside of unsightly or unhealthy structures and accumulated rubbish.
the municipal district is a concern. The primary reason for the concern is the impact on visual amenity caused by either or both the quantity and type of goods, machinery or equipment being kept and the way in which they are being kept on the land. The ‘look’ of a place can not only have a detrimental effect on the neighbourhood, but can leave a lasting impression on visitors or businesses that might be considering the area for a holiday or business opportunities.”

One scheme. One focus on individuals. One commitment to lifelong support. From 1 July, Australia’s current support system for people living with disability is being progressively replaced with DisabilityCare Australia. This new scheme will help provide a better quality of life for Australians with a significant and permanent disability, and for their families and carers too.
What’s new about DisabilityCare Australia? DisabilityCare Australia is a new way of funding personalised support for people with disability. As well as looking at a person’s immediate needs, it will take a lifelong approach and enable people with disability to have choice and control over their supports. It will focus on early intervention, recognising that timely support can minimise the impact of a disability on individuals, families and carers. Assistance will be provided at the right time, rather than only once people reach crisis.
Who is eligible? DisabilityCare Australia will help people who have a significant and permanent disability and who need assistance with everyday activities. This includes people whose disabilities are attributed to intellectual, cognitive, neurological, sensory, or physical impairment, or a psychiatric condition.
Will I lose my current support? No. Your current arrangements will stay in place until you have met DisabilityCare Australia to discuss your needs.
Will it affect my Disability Support Pension? No. Your Disability Support Pension will not be affected.
When does it all begin? DisabilityCare Australia is being rolled out in stages because it is a big change to the current system. Councillor backs redtape move N
orthern Grampians Shire Council has welcomed a Victorian Government announcement that will help reduce ‘red tape’ involving community events. Mayor Cr Wayne Rice said reducing, and advocating for the removal, of unnecessary regulation was a key focus of the council’s new Council Plan. He was commenting in response to Victorian Planning Minister Matthew Guy’s confirmation that regulation changes would remove the need for some community events to have a Place of Public Entertainment permit. “We are extremely pleased that Mr Guy has approved this amendment which will allow local community groups to hold events without onerous building permit regulations,” he said. “Northern Grampians Shire was one of several councils to express concern and uncertainty about the POPE and we took every opportunity to advocate for change, including raising the matter at the North West Municipalities MAV Strategic Forum in Hopetoun this year. “The requirements were quite restrictive and significantly increased the workload and costs for both council and the community groups.” Before the change, sporting and community clubs and groups had to apply for a POPE occupancy permit whenever they collected funds through any sporting, recreational or other event. As part of the reform, community and non-profit organisations running events that use recreational facilities larger than 500 square metres, and with less than 5000 people attending, are no longer required to apply for a POPE permit. Cr Rice said this would ensure the continuation and success of the hundreds of community events in Northern Grampians Shire each year. “Our shire is renowned for some fantastic events and festivals so it is pleasing to see common sense prevail.”
From July 2016, DisabilityCare Australia will continue to extend to more locations and age groups around Australia, including Queensland.

“Wendy is providing a fantastic service that we were unable to deliver before she arrived,” Ms Morley said. “Her expertise, knowledge, hard work and commitment have helped increase the podiatry service further because community members who accessed the service told other community members and our waiting list grew,” she said.

“I think it would be nice if they looked at each situation individually rather than generalise with these laws.”
Ms Cobbold said she was perplexed that her age had become an issue considering she was ‘clearly’ needed in the region’s health industry.

Ararat to replace worn-out meters
Ararat Rural City Council hopes the replacement of 28 ageing meters in Barkly Street in the next financial year will lead to a more efficient parking-meter system.
The council, which generates about $100,000 a year in meter takings, decided to buy new meters as part of its 2013-14 budget.
Rainbow group to play at Elmshurst S
Plantout organiser David Margetson said the Lazy Farmers Sons would cap off a big day involving volunteers planting about 10,000 trees on DeCamerons Wimmera River property at Elmhurst. “Planters can look forward to an enjoyable evening relaxing around the campfire and listening to a great local band,” he said. “There’s a misconception that
tree planting is hard, back-breaking work, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. We use a number of tools that means there’s minimal bending or heavy lifting. “Volunteers have the option of planting on both Saturday and Sunday or for just one day over the weekend. The weekend is fully catered and camping is available.” The Lazy Farmer’s sons, aka musicians Ben and Andy Gosling who are fourth-generation Rainbow farmers, have released a second album, Small Sky, after a debut album The Devil’s Plough in 2007.
Their music reflects ‘the harshness of the land, the brutal reality of isolation in the Australian bush’. A music critic described their music as ‘bush folk meets grizzly country rock sometimes tinged with melancholy and other times with raucousness’.
It is investigating potential suppliers and hopes to complete the process within a month. The move came in response to an increase in meter breakdowns in the last six months and a manufacturer being unable to supply spare parts. The council decided that the time spent attempting to fix or reset the 10-year-old meters was becoming costly and meters out of service was reducing revenue. It voted to replace the machines
To recognise this The Weekly Advertiser is providing a weekly snapshot of the awards’ nine finalists. This week we feature New Resident category finalist Charlie Ferrier of Kaniva. The township of Kaniva has benefitted from a decision by the former civil engineer to retire in the west Wimmera centre. Pictured with Wendy Robins, he is president of Kaniva Rotary Club and networks with agencies and authorities on various projects. He is good at encouraging others to join volunteer programs such as Men’s Shed and MATES Mentoring. He is also a volunteer taxi service driver and also devotes time to Kaniva Scouts.
To help the public the council has placed stickers on meters unable to be fixed. These bays are free of charge but a two-hour time limit still applies The council is encouraging people to report any faulty meters. Wimmera Volunteering Recognition Awards celebrate the community contribution of individuals, groups and organisations.
The council noted that the notification feature would increase efficiencies with meter-money collection, and reduce the time meters would be out of service. A further consequence of these meters breaking down was that parking revenue was reduced as well.

tawell Performing Arts Company junior group the SPACi Young Ones will present its first show at Stawell Entertainment Centre today.
The group, including 16 budding thespians aged between seven and 14 from five Stawell district schools, will present How to be a Pirate in Seven Easy Songs. The Young Ones will perform twice with a matinee performance at 2pm and an evening show at 7pm. Stawell Performing Arts Company formed the junior group last year to give youngsters a grounding in community theatre. Director Dianne Stewart said the 30-minute show was packed with fun for both the performers and the audience. “It is important that the young performers have material that they can easily connect to,” she said. “The show is written by Greg Giplin, a specialist composer, who writes material specifically for the developing singer-performer.” Story show is based on a crew encouraged by feisty

first mates, Saige Omernik and Sophie McKenzie, who go on a trip with fearless captain, Connor Williams, to find treasure and friendship on the high seas. Ms Stewart and assistant directors Tracey Erkelens and Melissa Bonney have been working with the group for the last 12 months. The group spent terms three and four of 2012 building singing and act-
ing skills and this year they have been putting it together for the production. “They really have come a long way, especially these last few weeks since moving rehearsals to the big stage at the town hall,” Mrs Erkelens said. Ms Stewart: “It takes a lot to fill the stage and auditorium with song and character but these kids will give it their very best come show time.”
Children will pay 50 cents and adults a dollar to raise money to cover the cost of the set and costumes. The matinee is all but booked out but tickets for the evening show are on sale at Sneak-APeak in Stawell’s Main Street or at the door tonight. After the show, the students will have a week’s break before starting preparations for next year’s performances.

Mr Wheaton said Goroke Golf Club would provide a light lunch at a cost of $7. Artists for the three shows are Johanna Hemara from Sydney and Trevor Keilar from Warrnambool. Mr Wheaton said Hemara was ‘a class act with dynamic vocals and a vast range’ which helped her adopt many styles to sing songs such as Dolly Parton’s ‘I Will Always Love You’ made famous by Whitney Houston.
“Hemara is one of the best yodellers in Australia. She attracts large crowds at Tamworth , Mildura and other festivals,” he said. Keilar, who has performed at two Horsham Country Music Festivals will support Hemara. The Horsham dinner show costs $30 and Horsham Morning Melodies $12. People can obtain tickets by phoning the RSL on 5382 5912 or by visiting the club.
Community backs development plan
Rural Northwest Health leaders are confident they have a community tick of approval for a $9.8-million stage-two redevelopment of a Warracknabeal campus. The health service released a master plan for public viewing last week, providing an opportunity for community members and heathservice staff to ask questions and provide input. Chief executive Catherine Morley and other project-control group members including board chairman Leo Casey, community and acute manager Jodi Lake and aged-care manager Sean Lake attended the viewings. Ms Morley said the general reaction to the plans was positive and amenable.
“There was a good cross section of the community in attendance at the viewings including younger and older members,” Ms Morley said. “There was healthy discussion and a genuine acceptance of the direction we are taking with the redevelopment. It was very pleasing,” she said. Ms Morley emphasised that the redevelopment would allow Rural Northwest Health to operate all Warracknabeal campus services from one building. “The $8.8-million in federal funding was allocated to enhance the acute, urgent care and community primary care areas and allow us to develop a one-stop shop,” she said.
Hurst set to lead health service advisory group Audrey Hurst from Dimboola is Wimmera Health Care Group’s new community advisory committee chairman. She replaces Gillian Vanderwaal who has stepped down after three years. Group chief executive Chris Scott praised Ms Vanderwaal for her commitment to the committee and welcomed Ms Hurst to her new role.

A dinner and show at Horsham RSL will be on August 8, followed by a Morning Melodies performance on August 9.
“Horsham Country Music Association decided on Goroke because it is central to many towns including Harrow, Natimuk, Edenhope, Kaniva, Nhill, Bordertown and Apsley,” he said.

Ms Hurst has represented the Dimboola community on the committee for three years. “I think the committee is very important because it allows the community to have a real say on how the hospital is run,” Ms Hurst said. The community advisory committee meets quarterly and provides feedback to Wimmera Health Care Group
on a wide range of issues. It plays a major role in production of community documents and brochures. A management board appoints committee members and invites people with various skills who have an interest in health issues affecting the regional community, strong community links and commitment and good communication skills.

The lifecycle of super there will be some ups and downs along the way. Depending on your attitude to investing you might not limit yourself to blue-chip shares but put some money into smaller companies or emerging markets.
M
uch of the focus of making super simpler is based on how to get money into or out of the system in the most tax-effective way.
But from an investment perspective it is important to remember that superannuation is not an asset class like shares or cash or property. Rather it is an investment vehicle through which you can invest into asset classes with varying amounts of flexibility. So, once your contributions have made it into the fund, how should they be invested? The answer will depend on your stage in life and your attitude to investment risk. If you are under 40 If you are aged 40 or younger you have 20 or 30 years until you can touch your superannuation. With this long timeframe ideally you should have a high proportion of your super invested in shares and property. These growth assets can be expected to produce the highest returns although
Wesley Performing Arts Centre Sunday 28 July, 5pm
If you are 50 If you are planning to retire and take a lump sum at age 55, you want to minimise the risk that your assets will lose value just before you access the money. Investing in more conservative investments such as fixed interest and cash could be appropriate. On the other hand, if you plan to keep working and take a pension at retirement, you are still a long-term investor so you could look at including growth assets. If you plan to take a pension Rather than taking lump sums, many retirees convert their super into an allocated pension. If this is your plan, the
However, this logic may not be quite right. Certainly you need a proportion of your money in cash because the fund will be paying you an income. But if you have only just retired you may have 20 or more years of retirement ahead of you. It would make sense to invest at least some of your money as if you were a 40-year-old. Higher returns will make your allocated pension last longer. One of the key roles of a financial adviser is to work out a suitable investment strategy for you based on the above factors and your personal views and objectives. Despite the traditional threatening orange and black colouration of many insects and appearing similar to bull ants, sugar ants are harmless.

Call for quilters to help craft extravaganza Wimmera Hospice Care Auxiliary has called on the region’s craft enthusiasts to help with a Quilt Extravaganza later this year. “What we are calling for is for people who are willing to make a quilt to donate to the extravaganza. We aim to have a range of quilts up for auction and silent auction, but to do that we need donations.” Mrs Crammond said the event is being planned in memory of the late Lyn Bullock, a keen Horsham quilter and user of the hospice service who died two years ago.
“Lyn’s husband Ross has even donated Lyn’s quilting materials so we will be making a quilt out of them which will be a lovely tribute,” she said. “We already have the support of Horsham Patchwork Quilters so we just know this event will be fabulous and have a lot of support.” Anyone willing to donate materials or make a quilt can

Fighting like Cats and Demons MALLEE FOOTBALL LEAGUE
W
By MICK SHANNON
oomelang-Lascelles moved into the top four of Mallee Football League after demolishing Hopetoun by 87 points last round.
Nyaburu Kelly dominated for the Cats, kicking five goals in a best-onground performance. In other games Sea Lake-Nandaly Tigers put on a clinic, defeating Ouyen United by 93 points, while Jeparit-Rainbow was competitive against Walpeup-Underbool but ultimately outclassed and went down by 29 points. This week features another good round of footy with the match of the round at Woomelang Recreation Reserve with the Cats taking on Ouyen United in a battle for fourth spot. Woomelang-Lascelles hit top form against Hopetoun, putting in a rare four-quarter performance to show just how damaging it can be when it gets its game going. Kelly brothers Nyaburu and Corey have been in great form for the Cats this season with their freakish goalkicking ability adding class to an already quick and skilful side.
plenty of opportunities to kick a big score.
Ouyen United will need to find a way to shut these players down, but with coach Peter Caldow still on the sidelines and a young brigade of midfielders, it is hard to see the Demons beating the Cats. Jerry Wilson has found good form in front of the goals for Ouyen United while Damian Cupido moved into the midfield last game and found plenty of the ball. Young players Jordan Manly and Tim Weir have been big improvers for the Demons this season, with Weir likely to get the job on Corey Kelly up forward. Speed is the biggest weapon that Woomelang-Lascelles possess and it will use this to run the Demons off their feet and cement itself in the top four with a 30-point victory.
Deek Roberts has hit a good patch of form for the Devils, while Cade Wellington impressed up forward last round with three goals. Hopetoun will look to gain respect but the Roos will prove too good and will win by seven goals.
Leader Ladder leader Beulah battles Jeparit-Rainbow at Beulah. The visitors have played better footy as the season has progressed and will look to put in a good performance against the Blues. Beulah will have key forward and club leading goal-kicker Dennis Redden return from injury and he will provide a great avenue to goal for the Blues.
Strong push Walpeup-Underbool will continue to push for second position when it comes up against cellar dweller Hopetoun at Hopetoun. Hopetoun played good footy to gain its first win of the season, against Jeparit-Rainbow, then produced a strong game against Beulah before crashing down to earth at the hands of Woomelang-Lascelles. The Roos on the other hand have been quietly going about their business, with class players slowly returning to the side as they look to
Jeparit-Rainbow backman Simon Clugston will get the job on Redden, but will need help from his teammates.

make a lot of noise come finals. Davis Piasente is one player that Hopetoun will need to watch out of
the middle with his ability to win clearances enabling forwards Wade Champion and Kyle Munro to get
Heath Clugston continues to provide the Lakers with plenty of drive out of the centre, but he will find the going tough this week when he faces classy Beulah on ballers Micah Buchanan and Tom Hallam. The Blues will be too strong over every line and win by 60 points. Sea Lake Nandaly Tigers have the bye.

Maiden win for Casey W
orking mum Sandra Casey joined Stawell Amateur Athletic Club this year never expecting to actually win a race.
She’s played quality tennis and rides a bike but only joined the running club at the urgings of fellow member Bridie Scollary and because her two boys Jacob and Logan, once they had a taste of competing with the club’s sub juniors, wanted more. In terms of running time, Casey has finished last or near last in her eight runs to date but the Horsham podiatrist personifies the spirit of participation above any craving to be the swiftest and surest at her newly adopted sport. “Sandra exemplifies the great egalitarian nature of handicap racing,” club presi-
dent Keith Lofthouse said after the five-kilometre handicap that finished in driving rain at Haven, near Horsham. “She ran the slowest time today but still she has made steady improvement and, with the handicaps working in her favour, was fast enough to beat Meggy Boan, the club’s most improved athlete, and the fastest female today,” he said. “Sandra might not improve as much but Meggy is a role model to aspire to.” Casey is now training at least three times a week, is mixing it up with sessions on the bike and has goals ahead, firstly to run five kilometres in a respectable 25 minutes. And then? “It won’t be this year, but it might be next year when I run a half marathon,” she said.
“That’s a distance I never thought I would be able to achieve until I ran the 16 kilometre race with the club, and now I think the extra distance is within my scope.”

Sports Day all the way for Horsham hoop YOUR ONE STOP slip and have most of them ‘off the bit’ and struggling while he was seemingly cruising rounding the home turn.
Horsham jockey Christine Puls returned to form last Monday, booting home a winner at Echuca. The better half of champion jockey Dean Yendall teamed up with long-time supporter, Maldon trainer Brian McKnight to ride maiden galloper Sports Day in an 1100-metre scamper. The three-year-old gelding was not given any chance by the local Murray-Mallee punters with 14-1 on the old scale the best price on offer with local bookies.
After calling for the oxygen mask in the straight Sports Day found something on an empty tank responding well to Christine’s aggressive riding to score by a half length on the winning post. Despite this being Sports Day’s only podium finish in eight outings, future wins wouldn’t surprise in restricted sprints.
Treble for Yendall Horsham jockey Dean Yendall added to his wife’s success at Echuca, booting home a winning treble. Despite the meeting being decimated by scratchings as a result of a weekend rain, Yendall still boasted a strong book of engagements.
Once the starting stalls flew open, Puls took advantage of her inside barrier draw pushing forward in the early stages eventually taking Sports Day to the lead.
The first of his winners came in race four aboard That’s Pure Gold for Flemington trainer Danny O’Brien in a 1400-metre maiden plate. The Horsham hoop gave the son of superstar stallion Fastnet Rock the usual gun run to get the chocolates.
After being unchallenged while bowling along for most of the race the son of American shuttle stallion Any Given Saturday was able to give his rivals the
The second winner came aboard Zalga for former Warrnambool now Caulfield trainer Ciaron Maher, who was the redhot favourite, and punters who took the
tomato sauce odds of $3 were not disappointed after the pair duly saluted.
The last leg of Yendall’s trio of winners came with the Patrick Payne-trained galloper Up The Creek also a red hot favourite with punters at $1.90. The son of ill-fated stallion Niello was too strong in the soupy conditions for his rivals relishing the conditions recording an effortless three-length victory.
In brief • This Saturday’s meeting scheduled for Hamilton had been transferred to Donald due to an unsuitable racing surface. • Dean Yendall booted home a winner at last week’s Geelong meeting aboard Rise To The Top for Flemington trainer Troy Portelli.

SPORT report
Panthers set to challenge Kalkee HORSHAM DISTRICT FOOTBALL LEAGUE
A
COMBE BY YA: Noradjuha-Quantong forward Jarred Combe tackles Laharum’s Daniel Easson during the Demons’ 48-point win on Saturday.
By GRANT KUCHEL
heavy track will be awaiting Rupanyup when the Panthers visit the windswept plains of Kalkee in Horsham District Football League this weekend.
Picture: WILLAMY IMAGES
The Panthers sit outside the five by two premiership points but face the tough task of toppling the ladder leaders to get back into the top five. The Kalkee ground will hold no fears for the Rupanyup side because it left there in round 15 last year with a draw. But this time the Panthers face a Kalkee side that would be looking to improve its form from last week.
Kalkee on the other hand should welcome back Josh Mibus. The key playmaker has missed a couple of weeks with a hamstring injury and the Kees would look forward to him controlling the half-back line. Kalkee’s depth has been a significant factor and a reason it sits atop the ladder and Rupanyup like other sides will struggle to contain the Kees for a full four quarters.
Edenhope-Apsley continues to rely on James Dixon to have an impact in attack and the Saints have struggled in recent weeks to settle their forward half down. Cameron Domaschenz and Matt Close were both named up forward last week as the Saints looked for more goal kickers. All year the Bombers have had plenty of firepower up forward. Led by Shane Oakley, Adam Hall and Jarred Combe they have had no trouble kicking potentially winning scores and if Brady King and his backline cohorts can stifle Dixon then déjà vu may just occur and the Bombers grab the points.
The big task for the Rupanyup backline led by Paul Trotter and Aaron Matthews will be limiting big forwards Adam Carter, Josh Beddison and Grant Schultz. Even in heavy conditions last week the trio kicked seven of the Kees’ 13 goals. Rupanyup will be hoping that Brett Niewand and Paul Brookes are available this week and take some of the pressure off the likes of Nathan Sachse, Glenn Wyatt and Neil Johnston.
should be worth viewing and be pivotal to the contest. Edenhope-Apsley will be led by Brent Christie, Dave McLeish and Taylor Milner around the stoppages while Bombers Matt Ward, Brent McIntyre and Marcus Anson normally revel in the heavy conditions.
Class Huge task Natimuk faces the huge task of toppling Laharum if it wants to make sure it stays in the top five. The Rams will again look to Callum Cameron, Jamie Elliott and Ash Pekin to continue their rich vein of form to upset one of the premiership favourites and keep fifth spot.
might be tough and the big Laharum forward line of Shannon Argall, Jason Przibilla and Ben Peucker has struggled to have the scoreboard impact it had earlier in the season. Mark Dorward and Tim Friend will need to kick a handful of goals each if the Rams are going to cause a boilover and take a step closer to playing finals football.
Laharum is a well-balanced side. Key playmakers Robbie Miller, newcomer Jim Wray and Rhys Bennett have been instrumental in the Demons’ fortunes in the past couple of weeks and Natimuk’s onballers led by coach Dylan Wright and Jon Hornsby will need to work hard.
A huge game will unfold at Apsley as Noradjuha-Quantong will look to repeat its round-six thrashing of Edenhope-Apsley and reignite its finals ambitions.
Ground conditions at Natimuk
The clash of big bodies in the centre
Finals ambitions
Pimpinio hosts Harrow-Balmoral and by the end of Saturday the visiting Roos will potentially sit just two points outside the five. Led by Brent Forsyth, Will Plush and Chris Heath the Roos will just have a bit too much class for the young Tigers. Wet heavy grounds have had an impact on the Pimpinio side. The young lighter-bodied Tigers prefer a firm track so they can use their speed to best advantage and wet heavy conditions have seen them easily buffeted off the ball. Pimpinio’s defence boasting Simon Risson and Alex Hill will make life hard for the Roos forward line led by Dalton Burns and possibly Brent Penny if he plays.
Harrow-Balmoral play a high-possession game. The Roos are willing to chip the ball around until they can attack, but with high possession comes higher risk and if the Tigers’ Darcy O’Connor, Todd O’Connor and Cam Ellis can put pressure on and create turnovers forwards Sam Turmine and Dylan Baker will have a chance to create scoreboard pressure.
Percentage Swifts will continue to build their percentage and keep pressure on the third-placed Edenhope-Apsley by easily accounting for Taylors Lake. The Lakers had their best result for the year last week and the return of Dean Harberger has given the side a lift. Swifts will run the Lakers off their legs, the likes of Scott Carey, Ash Cowen and Sean Mantell having too much speed and if Jeremy Joiner sits in the square he will slot a fair bagful. Taylors Lake will want to close the game up as much as possible and allow the bustling Aaron Lewis, Jason Weir and Ian McCulloch to win control around the stoppages. Taylors Lake will go in with plenty of confidence. It was in front at quarter time last week and Swifts coaches Paul Hanns and Ben Martin will make sure their playing group is switched on and extinguish the Lakers’ confidence early and continue to push for a top-three spot.

Eagles and Bombers in top-five encounter MININERA DISTRICT FOOTBALL LEAGUE

By JONATHAN BOX
Sean McDougall was again Tatyoon’s best player and has shown his dominance throughout the season.
The big clash in Mininera and District Football League will unfold this weekend when fifth-placed Tatyoon hosts fourthplaced Penshurst. Tatyoon managed a massive win last week against Moyston-Willaura, finding form at the right time of the year after a slow start to the season.
Timothy Barr and Mitchell Cronin were also among the best for the Hawks and will look to continue their good form into this week, throughout the rest of the season and hopefully into the finals.
Tatyoon is showing that it is an honest finals contender and should not be taken lightly by any team.
Last year’s premier Penshurst, which defeated Tatyoon for the flag, will hope its recent poor performance will be quickly behind them. It too will be looking for a successful run into finals, starting this week.
Both Moyston-Willaura and Tatyoon had the same amount of scoring shots last week but Tatyoon’s Aidan Bell led the charge for the
Last week Penshurst went down to Glenthompson-Dunkeld by 32 points. It might easily have been a real thrashing had Gl-
enthompson-Dunkeld been more accurate in front of goals. Brothers Justin and Christopher Eales did their best to keep the Bombers in touch, kicking three goals apiece, and despite the efforts of best-on-ground Joe Page it wasn’t enough. This week’s match will be a massive game for both teams. Regardless of the outcome there will be a good chance these team will meet again in the finals.
Setback Hawkesdale-Macarthur suffered a setback to their finals campaign when they were smashed by 70 points against Wickliffe-Lake Bolac. The Eagles, who have been up and down all season, are one of four teams fighting for the fifth position in the finals. Goal-kicker Xavier McCartney was again dominant in front of goals, kicking three to

be the Eagles’ only multiple goal scorer. He along with Lachlan Glare and Danny Chatfield will try to put in strong performances against Moyston-Willaura this week to allow their team to keep in touch with the top five. Moyston-Willaura which has shown throughout the season that it can not only match it with, but beat the best, suffered a big loss to Tatyoon. Philip Brady and Jeremy Cronin kicked two goals each. Ruckman Josh Bywater as well Rhys Cronin were best for Moyston-Willaura and will hope they can get over what they would have felt was a shock loss and get some much-needed wins before the finals. In other games wrapping up round 15, Wickliffe-Lake Bolac travel to Wondoola to play the Tigers, Glenthompson-Dunkeld hosts Cabramurra and SMW Rovers and Lismore-Derrinallum will need victories over Great Western and Ararat respectively if they want to play finals.

The Eagles must turn opportunities into goals and there are a few players who need to quickly find form.
By DEAN LAWSON
kay Minyip-Murtoa, it is time to put the foot down in Wimmera Football League. Now is the time to start cementing your place in the top five and presenting yourself as a legitimate challenger to yardstick teams Dimboola and Horsham.
As teams prepare for round-14 games, the countdown to the finals is well and truly on and as it has been since the halfway point of the season, the all-important third place remains up for grabs. Minyip-Murtoa sits third as it prepares for a huge game against Warrack Eagles at Brim. It’s a game the Burras must win, as much for selfbelief as anything. A quick glance at the ladder shows Minyip-Murtoa holding onto the double-chance spot by a game from Horsham Saints but with a fragile percentage that threatens to prove costly. But spelling out the Burras equation, which includes games against Dimboola and Horsham in the next month, is lost on coach Scott Arnold. Arnold said although club leaders had obviously analysed the situation, the simple formula was to continue winning as much as possible. “Realistically, where we sit now is irrelevant. I only look at the ladder twice in a season – at the halfway point and at the end of the home-andaway season. We just have to keep winning,” he said. “Sure, we’ve talked about the top three spots and I believe we’re a genuine chance to hold our spot. We’re playing some good footy and I think our best is still ahead of us.” Arnold was quick to dismiss Warrack Eagles’ poor result against Dimboola last weekend, suggesting the Eagles might have packed their bags early to fight another day after the Roos had busted the game open. He said he rated the Eagles and
Minyip-Murtoa will win a tough game deep in enemy territory.
Barometer Horsham Saints will be hungrily eyeing off third spot and after a comprehensive win over Ararat will now turn its sights on Stawell at Central Park.
ALL THE BUZZ: Northern Territory recruit Timothy Mosquito has been an excitement machine for Minyip-Murtoa. The young forward has kicked six goals in his three matches for the Burras. Picture: CONTRIBUTED
their coach Tim Inkster highly and expected a tough game. It’s true that Minyip-Murtoa is far from the heaviest scoring side in the competition but it has plenty of attacking options and an even spread of goal-kickers.
the last six weeks. The Eagles need to respond to last week’s heavy loss strongly and try to find consistency from their many talented but relatively green running and link players.
The Saints, who had strayed from the winning formula, were never in trouble against the Rats and team barometer Phil Butsch was again a stand-out while Gavin Kelm kicked five goals. There seems little doubt the Saints will be too good for Stawell but some fans are suggesting the Saints might be, at this stage of the season, flattrack bullies. The Saints too face Horsham and Dimboola in the run home and it will
The Burras rely heavily on closing down opponents and using speed and midfield run to cause damage on the counterpunch.
Young players Arnold praised players who had stepped up this season including running defender Blake Young, midfielder Karl Campbell and the leadership of Zac Cross and first-year captain Adam Gerdtz. Jayden Beaumont will return after being unavailable last week and Kirsten Hunter should be back from thigh trouble, adding extra pace to the list. However injured Liam Newell is likely to remain on the sidelines for the next month.
Up against it Nhill of course enjoyed the win over Stawell but this week will run head-long into a Horsham side fresh from a bye. The Tigers came from behind last week but if they give the Demons any sort of head-start then it will be a case of good night before half time. Will Oakley and Will Kelly have consistently been in the best for the Tigers, which have been only a few talented players short of being a finals team. Nhill won’t be able to match the Demons for long and must make all opportunities count. One of the closest games of the round might evolve between Ararat and Horsham RSL Diggers. Both sides have struggled to kick goals against quality opponents, relying too heavily on too few. When the sides last met it was a thriller with Ararat securing the points and this time the Diggers will be chasing a breakthrough win. Strong Kye Chapple and hardworking Justin Cozens have been flying the flag for the Diggers while Nick Maddison, Jack Ganley and the clever Aaron Searle have been prominent for the Rats. Ararat at homes appears to hold the aces.
WFL round 14
A possible match-up between Burras key-position player Clinton Midgley and in-form Peter Weir should be a beauty. Midgley, like Declan Foot and Gus Trethowan have been good at both ends of the ground and the Burras have used the penetrating boot of Brayden Ison through the middle in
be interesting to see where they sit for approaching finals. Stawell fell at the line against Nhill last week, Zac Marrow, Tom Eckel and Shane Field all good players in a narrow loss. But the Warriors will find the Saints a tougher proposition and simply won’t be able to match the visitors in the clinches.

Toyota streamlines HiLux range T

and Nissan Navara with 13,723 sales, while the newer Ford Ranger sits in eighth spot with 10,563 units shifted.
Meantime, Toyota last year announced it would upgrade the HiLux in 2013 to include safety improvements in a bid to boost its ANCAP rating from four stars to five.
Meantime, the fate of an expected suite of fleet-friendly safety upgrades expected to be applied to the range this year – many large fleets now insist on five ANCAP stars – is up in the air, with no confirmation of when we may see any changes applied.
The improvements were expected to include the addition of electronic stability control and side curtain airbags to some variants, but Toyota this week did not confirm whether or not the upgrade would go ahead.
The company recently discontinued a number of two-wheel drive V6s, including the SR Single Cab pick-up and cab-chassis, the automatic Extra Cab SR5 pick-up and the manual version of the Double Cab SR pick-up.
Getting the chop Four-wheel drive variants getting the chop include the manual Double Cab SR5 pick-up and both the manual and auto versions of the SR manual Double Cab pick-up. The V6 petrol models Toyota has retained are the 4x2 SR Extra Cab pick-up, 4x2 SR and SR5 Double Cab pick-up and 4x4 SR5 Double Cab pick-up, all in automatic guise.

less than 20 percent of the total V6 petrol HiLux sales, which in turn represent only a slim fraction of overall sales, meaning the move will have minimal impact to overall HiLux sales.
Toyota has not made any changes to the 3.0-litre turbo-diesel or 2.7-litre petrol variants in the HiLux range.
While the HiLux range is on track to be this year’s best-selling lightcommercial vehicle, it could also take over as the overall top-selling vehicle for 2013.

HiLux 4x4 sales are up by 9.9 per-
cent for the first six months of the year with 15,396 units shifted, while Toyota has sold 5325 4x2 utes so far this year, down 1.5 percent on last year’s results. The combined total of HiLux sales from January to June this year is 20,721 units. Currently, the HiLux’s main competition for sales comes from within its own stable, with the Corolla hatch sitting in the top spot with 20,970 sales, just 249 units ahead of HiLux.
Last year’s sales winner, the Mazda3, is still a contender in third place with 20,077 units sold so far this year, but with an all-new model set to launch in quarter one next year, it may not maintain the momentum it needs for a third straight year on top of the sales charts. Light-commercial vehicles currently make up four spots in the top ten-selling vehicles in Australia, with aging models such as the Mitsubishi Triton in sixth place on 13,054 sales
Currently manufacturers are not mandated to include ESC on LCVs, but earlier this year the federal government announced it would consider making the safety technology mandatory on all LCVs sold in Australia from around 2015 to 2016. From November this year, all passenger vehicles sold in every state and territory of Australia must have ESC as standard. Victoria is the only state that currently requires ESC as standard on all passenger vehicles available for sale, which has seen a number of makers precluded from selling models in the state. Swift 4x4 no-go T
his high-riding, body clad and all-wheel drive Suzuki Swift has emerged in the UK, but curious Australians are still set to miss out.
As well as getting some styling revisions, the Swift 4x4 – designed for snowy European roads – sits 25mm higher and is 65kg heavier than the regular two-wheel drive hatch. It has arrived in the United Kingdom and has been onsale for a little while in icy cold markets such as Germany, Hungary, Switzerland and Japan. But Australian snow bunnies, it seems, are not on the list. Suzuki Australia communications manager Andrew Ellis said despite the local interest in the car, it won’t be added to the local line-up. “It’s got a smaller 1.2-litre engine and its from Europe as well so to get it over here from a cost perspective and practicality, the case just doesn’t make sense,” he said. The Japanese car-maker claims enhanced cornering ability in the 4x4, thanks to the permanent four-wheel

drive system ‘which transfers additional torque to the rear wheels when required via a viscous coupling’. Meantime, Mr Ellis said the regular Australian-spec Swift would receive a ‘cosmetic upgrade’ around the middle of next year as a part of a midlife refresh for the range. Mr Ellis also confirmed the S-Cross SUV – touted as a replacement for the aging SX4 – will arrive in Australian showrooms either late this year or early 2014. The SX4 will continue to sell alongside the S-Cross for the first few months of next year before being phased out completely.
Suzuki has confirmed the SCross will be powered by a 1.6-litre petrol engine and is working on adding a 1.6-litre turbo-diesel to the range as well. Meanwhile, Suzuki Australia is currently offering limited edition ‘Shadow Sport’ versions of its Grand Vitara compact SUV and the rangetopping Swift Sport for no additional cost. Grand Vitara features a contrasting black roof and is available on any model in the range, while Swift Sport gains a red roof and side decals. Tim Nicholson © GoAutoMedia, 2013
Walkinshaw monsters VF Commodore There’s something a little bit different about Walkinshaw Performance. Just ask the aftermarket tuning group’s general manager of marketing and communications, Tom Reynolds. There has to be. Its staple for the last eight years, the Holden Commodore, is running out of time in its current form, and the bolt-on, go-fast accessories developer will have to start thinking afresh about what it does next. “If the VF turns out to be the swan song for the Commodore, it’s going to be a great, proud way to go,” Mr Reynolds told GoAuto after announcing the first of its per-
formance upgrade packs for the V8-engined versions of the new Holden.
drive layout – but according to Mr Reynolds, Walkinshaw won’t be taking the slow lane.
“We’ve been moving into different products for different makes and different models, but Commodore is the car that built our reputation and it’s been terrific for us.”
“Our recent history points to what we’re doing,” he said. “We’ve done an upgraded turbo kit for the Holden Cruze – we took that from 90 kilowatts for the standard kit for the older 1.4-litre, and we got it out to 180kW.
Walkinshaw Performance faces losing its hold on the large, rear-drive Commodore when the current Zeta-based car reaches the end of its viable production life somewhere in the next three years. Holden has already revealed it is working on the nextgeneration Commodore range – which will potentially see the nameplate adopt a front-

VW owners wait V
olkswagen owners shoud have a fair idea next month if a widespread recall to fix transmission problems in VW-badged passenger cars is likely to hurt them come trade-in time.
MONSTER: Nissan’s legendary GT-R soon returns to Mt Panorama, but not as we know it.
Nick Adamidis, the national sales and marketing manager for used-car pricing group Glass’s Information Service, said it was still too early to say what long-term effect the Volkswagen recall was likely to have on the brand.
Godzilla marches back to the mountain gearbox that is not the subject of the VW recall, had slowed dramatically. The coroner is expected to hand down a finding in the case this month.
The Volkswagen Group, which includes Audi and Skoda-badged cars, has issued a recall for 34,000 vehicles in Australia to fix transmission problems that may either dramatically slow or bring the car to a halt in traffic.
However, Mr Adamidis said there had already been a small wobble in used Volkswagen values.

“There’s been a slight effect on them at the auctions, but not significant – maybe a two or three per cent reduction, but it is not significant yet,” he said.
The recall is in response to a customer backlash after the Victorian coroner launched an inquest into an incident that resulted in a woman being killed after a truck slammed into the back of her slowmoving Golf on the Monash Freeway in 2011.
However, Mr Adamidis said next month’s sales figures would be the telling ones for the German premium brand, especially if new-car showrooms struggled to connect

“The new-car passenger sales in June dropped off, so you’d expect if that continues, that the dealers will start to pull back from buying. They would expect a discount for buying, so you might see an acceleration in the residual value fall-off,” he said.
Nissan’s GT-R will return to Mount Panorama for the first time in 22 years when its global Nismo race team fields a GT3 racecar in February’s Bathurst 12-hour enduro.

Mazda hat-trick with next-gen ‘3’ N
ever mind the Toyota Corolla and company, because premium small-car competitors such as the Volkswagen Golf, Volvo V40 and even the Audi A3 are also in the brand new Mazda3’s firing line.
traction and maximise utility. As with every button we pressed, twisted or prodded, the movement felt well engineered.
WORTHY FOLLOW-UP: Mazda has come through with the goods with its new ‘3’.
Yet the Japanese firm’s past is also present. Look at how low the cowl is, with horizontal dash themes redolent of the original version. There’s a hint of RX-8 in the disc-embossed climate-control fascia in upmarket models, the attractive steering wheel and smart materials bring to mind the Mazda6, and there’s a proper old-fashioned handbrake.
Out in February, the third-generation of Australia’s favourite car over the past two years brings improvements in almost every area, from dynamics to cabin quality, refinement to efficiency. We know all this because we’ve driven it, in Los Angeles of all places. That’s the good news. The not-so-good news is that while pricing and other specification details won’t be divulged until the end of this year, it is likely that the base 2.0-litre hatch will probably kick off from at least $1000 more than before, to help pay for all the advances.
All-new But trust us, holding out for the all-new – and we mean all-new – BM-series Mazda3 will be worth it, if our day driving in and around Los Angeles in pre-production prototypes proved anything. These early-build test hatchbacks – the sedans are still nowhere to be seen – are said to fairly represent the eventual proper production car, even though the trick new multimedia and satellite navigation systems were not yet functional. Nor was the fit and finish anywhere near Mazda’s hard-won reputation for quality – but since they’re early build cars, we’ll reserve judgement. We can say with surety the lower and wider
exterior design appears far more upmarket than before, fusing Japanese detailing with Italianesque proportions for a far more visually compelling style. Sure, the Mazda3’s complex curves and carvings are thematically inspired by the original BMW 1 Series, but there’s a hint of Alfa Romeo Giulietta elegance here and dash of latest Benz A-Class spirit there. As the posh brand name-checking affirms, Mazda’s in an expansive mood and wants to show its 3.5 million-strong customer base how haute its couture can get. That ‘Signature Wing’ grille isn’t any less goofy in real life, however. Stepping inside the new-comer continues the premium theme – as evidenced by the very Audi-style T-section dash layout, complete with stylish single-dial digital/analogue instrumentation, ‘floating’ central touchscreen and welcome
lack of the fussiness that cheapened the outgoing model. Indeed, the Mazda3’s cabin appearance is a league ahead of the comparatively drab item found in the closely related CX-5 and Mazda6. Since none of the seven-inch touchscreens were connected, we can’t tell you how well any of their various functions work, except that a video demonstration during the press conference impressed us with the ergonomics, logic and ease of their operation. We’ll wait and see what the Australian cars serve up. What is in perfect operating order is the Mazda-first and mainstream small-car segmentleading heads-up display screen, that only features vital driving-related info, and on a needto-know basis at that.
To be built at a Renault-Nissan Alliance factory near Chennai, India, the Go will be priced ‘well below’ 400,000 rupees – $A7334 – when it goes on sale in India early in 2014, competing against the likes of the Tata Nano, Maruti Suzuki Alto and Hyundai i10. Nissan says the five-door Go will be the first of ‘several’ Datsun models to be launched later next year in a variety of markets including Indo-
nesia, Russia and South Africa, but the company has confirmed there are no plans for Datsun to return to Australia, despite the brand’s resonance with customers here.
Drawing its name from the original 1914 Japanese-built Datsun, the DatGo, the new Go hatch was unveiled in New Delhi this week by Nissan president and CEO Carlos Ghosn, who said it was an ‘historic day for Nissan Motor Company and for our customers and partners in some of the world’s fastest-growing markets’. “It’s also an exciting moment for many women and men here in India who – today – come one step closer to realising the dream of purchasing a car,” Mr Ghosn said.
Nissan says the front-wheel-drive Go was designed in Japan but that research and development and engineering for the project was undertaken in India ‘to ensure the product would suit local market conditions, preferences, tastes and needs, and would be accessible in terms of price and supply’.
But even if the next best-seller costs upwards of $1000 more than before, all the signs are strong that the 2014 Mazda3 might be the best car the company has ever sold in this country, and so worth every single extra cent. “This is a really, really good car so it will get the price it deserves,” Mazda Australia managing director Martin Benders said. “It will reset the benchmark in the small-car segment.” It isn’t just Corolla and co that have something to fear. Byron Mathioudakis © GoAutoMedia, 2013
READY, SET: The Datsun Go was styled in Japan but R&D and engineering took place in India, where Nissan will take on established budget cars such as the Tata Nano.
It will be fitted standard with a 1.2-litre petrol engine and five-speed manual gearbox, while a mobile docking station enabling smartphone connectivity will also be available. There is no word yet on safety features or other equipment. Terry Martin © GoAutoMedia, 2013

Datsun is Go for 2014 launch
Nissan has unveiled its highly anticipated modern-era budget car for emerging markets that heralds the return of its famous Datsun brand – the Go five-door hatchback.
All but one prototype was fitted with a sunroof, yet even the inevitable loss of headroom didn’t seem an issue in the low, wide, and spacious cabin. There are tonnes of places to store stuff, and the child-seat restraint straps don’t foul cargo space since they live directly behind the rear seatbacks.
