High-ranking visitor rekindles ship bid

H

orsham RSL sub-branch members hope a visit by a high-ranking Royal Australian Navy officer to Horsham today will help with a longterm push for a new HMAS Horsham warship.

The branch’s commemorative committee chairman David Eltringham hinted that a visit by Commodore Michael Houghton for Anzac Day services would provide an ideal opportunity to give the project momentum.

“It’s been quite a while since we’ve had a HMAS Horsham and the hope is that some time in the future another fleet ship will be commissioned to follow in the tradition,” he said.

The last HMAS Horsham was a Bathurst-class corvette, which operated out of Fremantle during the Second World War. It was one of 60 Bathurst-class corvettes named after regional Australian centres. HMAS Ararat and HMAS Stawell were also RAN fleet corvettes.

History reveals that respective regional communities spent considerable time and effort providing support for ‘their’ ships Horsham Rural City Council, which has displayed the ship’s bell from HMAS Horsham in Horsham Civic Centre since 1978, has long lobbied for another ship named in the city’s honour.

Commodore Houghton is Director-General of Major Surface Ships and Defence Material Organisation and is guest of Horsham RSL, which will make special reference to the navy at today’s ceremonies.

Anniversary The naval theme is in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the first RAN fleet to enter Sydney Harbour.

Sounding the bell from HMAS Horsham will be part of 6.15am and 11am commemorative services at Horsham’s Sawyer Park Cenotaph.

During the ceremonies officials will toll the bell for each of the names of service personnel and returned service personnel who have died in the last 12 months.

This year’s Horsham march will start

at 10.30am from the front of Horsham Theatre in Pynsent Street and end at Sawyer Park.

Commodore Houghton will attend both services and with will join Horsham student and Spirit of Anzac award-winner Grace Ostapiw as guest speaker in the mid-morning ceremony.

Anzac Day services are occurring in several regional centres and localities today.

A

s today’s Australians we all have a duty to steal a moment from our busy schedules to reflect on the meaning of Anzac Day.

Of course circumstances are different for everyone but it is hard to question the broad opportunities our society provides for its people.

We will never truly know what the sacrifices of thousands of Australians during violent international conflict might have prevented. What we do know about is what we have now.

The fact also remains that everyday Australians, many who have become or became much more than everyday people put their lives on the

line or died to protect and preserve an ideal. That alone is reason enough for us all to put our domestic differences aside and to come together as a nation – at least for one special day.

Many of us can only imagine the heartache of a nation in the wake of the carnage of the First and Second World Wars. Both are such a long time ago. As we move on, the tragedies that unfolded in Malaya, Korea and Vietnam are also becoming limited to the memories of a few.

As a government we are in the unenviable position of needing to fund upgrades for over 200 schools across the state, which are in a similar condition to Horsham College - in desperate need of repair, because of Labor’s neglect.

Since coming to government in 2010, the Coalition Government has delivered $7-million for Horsham Special Development School, a facility which was in dire need of an upgrade, and the rebuild is looking great.

I will continue to lobby strongly for Horsham College, as I do for each of the 52 schools in my electorate.

State Government Minister Hugh Delahunty welcomed the investment, which would ‘help address a decade of Labor neglect’ and provide nine schools in the Lowan electorate with a total of $838,362.

“A complete picture of the state of our school buildings did not exist until the Victorian Coalition Government’s comprehensive building audit was carried out last year,” Mr Delahunty said.

“Despite the billions spent on programs like Building the Education Revolution, the audit revealed a massive $420-million maintenance backlog.

Schools that have been identified as having facilities in a poor or worn condition will now be able to address those deficiencies. This will

result in all our government schools having higher standard infrastructure, ensuring a quality educational environment for our teachers and students.”

The nine Lowan electorate schools that have received funding from this allocation are: Cavendish Primary School, $5423; Dimboola Memorial Secondary College, $88,698; Horsham College, $229,798; Horsham Primary School, $279,134; Horsham West-Haven Primary School, $8360; Laharum Primary School, $53,325; Merino Consolidated School, $18,734; Penshurst Primary School, $16,564; Rainbow Secondary College, $137,326.

Education Minister Martin Dixon said the government was committed to better building management in all 1539 government schools.

“The independent maintenance audit has given us a clear and consistent picture of school maintenance requirements so that funding is allocated to schools most in need of repair or rebuilding,” Mr Dixon said.

Stick Shed advocate honoured A heritage advocate who fought for the preservation of the Murtoa Stick Shed for more than 20 years has been awarded the Heritage Council of Victoria’s third annual Heritage Volunteer Award.

The award was presented to Leigh Hammerton by Heritage Council chair Daryl Jackson at last week’s Heritage Address at Melbourne Museum.

Mr Jackson said Leigh had a long association with the Murtoa Stick Shed, and had been a strong advocate for its preservation since he moved to the town in 1990.

“There have been many critics of the shed and any attempt to restore it, but Leigh has led a growing band of supporters for over 20 years,” he said.

“In 2009 Leigh created a

website to promote its heritage value and potential to attract tourism to the region and continued to push progress on the planned restoration.”

Mr Jackson said Leigh’s roles with Murtoa’s Progress Association and Big Weekend committee had underpinned his efforts in this regard, with the Stick Shed open for the last two annual Big Weekends.

Funding boost for Victorian ANZACs

onsidering the turmoil of war with its mobilisation, destruction, vast array of human emotion, tragedies and heroism, it is hard to imagine such large-scale conflict ever being boring.

But for South Australian sailor Doug Lawson, now 89, coping with boredom while on naval duties on HMAS Horsham during the Second World War was part of everyday life.

Mr Lawson said from Adelaide this week that life for the 70 to 80 sailors on the Bathurst-class corvette between 1942 and 1945 was ‘far from glamorous’.

He also added that it never sat well with him or some other members of the crew that the ship never fired a shot in anger.

“You have to remember we were all kids, aged between 17 and 19 on a warship and we were busting our guts to see some action. But it never happened and we would spend a lot of time being bored.

“Often it was three days on standby and three days on patrol between the mainland and Rottnest Island,” he said.

“But in saying that, it was obviously quite an experience and looking back, they were some of the best days of my life.”

The HMAS Horsham was one of 60 Australian-designed corvettes, generalpurpose escort, troop and supply transport, anti-submarine and anti-mine ships.

All were named after regional Australian centres.

The history of the HMAS Horsham and recognition of the Royal Australian Navy in general will feature prominently at Horsham RSL sub-branch Anzac Day services today.

As part of the dedication Mr Lawson

agreed to pass on his memories about his time on the ship in the critical role as – the ship’s cook.

He said his father had owned a bakery in Port Adelaide during the Second World War and he would often deliver bread to ships. His experience baking automatically ‘qualified’ him as a cook.

“One of my brothers was in the AIF and the other in the RAAF and when I turned 17 I joined up,” he said.

Mr Lawson briefly spent time on the famous Port Phillip tug HMAS James Paterson and was then on a tanker running aviation fuel from Brisbane along Australia’s east coast.

He then had word that he would be drafted to the HMAS Shropshire, the replacement cruiser for HMAS Canberra lost during the Battle of Savo Island.

“I was delighted. I was supposed to take a trip to America but then found the draft had been cancelled and I had to go to Melbourne to be on the Horsham. I was commissioned off to Fremantle and, to be honest, was spitting chips,” he said.

Mr Lawson said his role as cook prevented him from exploring other postings in the navy.

“They kept telling me: ‘don’t even think about it’ which was quite frustrating,” he said.

Escort Yet amid the monotony, the Horsham and other warships played important maritime roles. Multi-purpose escorts were critical in providing back-up for the allied fleet, especially at Fremantle, a critical American submarine base.

Mr Lawson said one of the major assignments he remembered vividly was being part of a naval escort for ships laden with important railway-loading stock destined

for Europe.

“With many sea routes out of action it had to come from the east coast of Australia, to Western Australia and then across the Indian Ocean. It then went up through the Suez Canal,” he said.

“We had to accompany the ships loaded with stock halfway from Cape Leeuwin to Colombo before turning back. We had aircraft escort during the day and the pilots would always head off home at dusk. They would signal to us ‘good night and good luck’ with their lights. All we thought was: ‘lucky buggers - they will be out having a few beers tonight while we’re stuck out here.’

“Thinking back, it was quite a big thing.”

Survey duties HMAS Horsham carried troops to Timor for the Japanese surrender and as the war entered its final stage took on survey responsibilities to plot the ocean floor between Australia and Timor. The area, now known worldwide as Timor Gap, had previously only been subject to 19th century maritime surveys and was to ultimately reveal vast reserves of oil and gas.

While Mr Lawson, who eventually went back into the baking as well as other business ventures as a civilian said life on the Horsham was far from romantic, he agreed that the ship did become ‘home’.

He summed it up: “One time we had docked in Fremantle and I was told to take some of my leave. I was walking and as I looked back at the ship a thought suddenly hit me: ‘hang on a minute, that’s going to go out without me’. It was my home and it was where my mates were.

Community to add to flood investigation

he Wimmera’s third flood investigation since spring and summer flooding across the region in 20102011 region will start with community meetings in Dadswells Bridge, Pomonal and Moyston next week.

The investigation will provide information for flood-response agencies and better protection and improved preparedness for future floods.

Investigation results will also form part of local government planning schemes, providing the community and councils a better understanding of the impact of floods on new building developments.

orsham’s Awakenings and Horsham’s Art Is… festivals will join forces for the first time this year.

Awakenings, Australia’s only disability arts festival, will contribute to the Art Is… Of our land program to give the community another ‘Touch of Awakenings’ while the festival is on hiatus.

Wimmera Uniting Care chief executive Wendy Middleton said Awakenings would host a workshop as part of the festival’s Family Fun Day between 3pm and 4pm on June 2 at Sawyer Park as well as an exhibition at Café Jas as part of Galleries on the Side.

Ms Middleton said it would be an exciting collaboration.

“We really want to keep Awakenings in the forefront of people’s minds,” she said.

Art Is… festival manager Kate Finnerty said working together and joining resources would make both festivals stronger in the future.

“The Art Is… festival is an inclusive event which is delivered to a diverse audience,” she said.

“We want to create an event that the whole community can be involved in.”

She said there were plenty of possibilities for how the two festivals could continue to work together and grow.

“We can go anywhere from here,” she said. “It may be that we work to-

“Participants will work on a canvas which they will get to take home with them.”

As well as the workshop, Awakenings will exhibit the work of two artists at Café Jas as part of the Galleries on the Side – a regular feature on the Art Is… program.

Youth art on display

oung artists from across West Wimmera Shire will display their talent and imagination at a youth art exhibition and market day at Lake Charlegrark near Goroke on Sunday.

The inaugural Youth Art at Charlegrark, from 10am to 4pm, will provide an opportunity for artists aged between 12 and 25 to exhibit their work in a community-event environment.

West Wimmera Shire Council is organising the event to

unearth artistic talent across the shire and to provide an outlet for various art formers from dancing and music to painting.

Council acting youth officer Amanda Munn said the event would ‘fill a gap’ in the shire while providing a ‘great day out for everyone’.

“It came about because there is not a lot of events or places for young people in the shire to show off their artistic talents, especially across all aspects of art,” she said.

“There is going to be some really cool stuff going on,

a lot of activities and great entertainment as well as a market.”

Ms Munn said artwork by Kaniva’s Emily Hicks, a former Hamilton student who won last year’s Heysen Art Prize, would be on display.

“Goroke, Kaniva and Edenhope colleges are all on board and there will be entertainment for families with young children as well the general public,” she said.

“I’m pretty excited about it.

I think it will be a tremendous day.”

There will be several market stalls and plenty of food and drink available.

Stawell Steps up again Following hot on the heels of winning a state Institute of Public Works Engineering Australia award, the Stawell Steps project at Cato Park in Stawell has now won the National Awards for Local Government’s Innovative Infrastructure Development category.

Rural Councils Victoria chair Cr Rob Gersch said it was fantastic that a small rural council took out the award when many large city councils from throughout the country enter with bigger projects that have bigger budgets.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Anthony Albanese announced the project’s win.

Stawell Steps came about as a solution for the town after Cato Lake flooded in 2011, causing significant damage to the adjacent Stawell Bowling Club and nearby houses and businesses.

This makes the Northern Grampians Shire Council just one of 18 of the nation’s 565 councils among the winners in this year’s awards.

RCV provided money under its Population Attraction and Retention stream to help 21 university students living in Stawell to work on the project.

New boating access for Toolondo Wimmera anglers will have greater access to Toolondo Reservoir after Balmoral and District Angling Club constructed a new ramp and park at the popular fishing lake.

How is this project funded?

An investment of $3.35 million will be made to deliver this project. On February 28 Minister for Sport and Recreation The Honourable Hugh Delahunty announced the Coalition Government’s funding package of $1.15 million towards this project.

This package consists of $650,000 from the Community Facility Funding Program – Major Facilities category and a further $500,000 from the Regional Growth Fund’s Putting Locals First Program.

ollowing the huge success of last year’s inaugural event, the ‘The Ace Radio Wimmera Heart Challenge – Run for Russ’ will return this year on Sunday, August 11.

Corporation Southern Regional Panel deputy chair Peter Schwarz presented the award at a National Canola Pathology Workshop in Melbourne.

Last year 400 runners and walkers from all corners of the state met at Cato Lake for the 5km walk/run and 10km run return route to raise funds for heart-health education.

Organiser Jackie Peacock launched the Wimmera Heart Challenge in memory of her father Russell Peacock who passed away in 1996 without warning from a heart attack.

olice are advising that failing to adhere to strict requirements regarding the security and safe storage of firearms and ammunition is an offence and might lead to prosecution.

World aerial skiing champion and five-time Olympic Games representative Jacqui Cooper will be guest speaker at Grampians Tourism’s annual conference in Ararat next month.

Cooper will talk about her 21-year sporting career to deliver the message that: ‘Success is not final, failure is not fatal, it is the courage to continue that counts’.

Wimmera crime prevention officer Senior Constable Eddy MacDonald said he made no apologies for delivering a strong message on the issue.

The message, applicable to all businesses, will work in with a theme of the halfday ‘Growing our Tourism Future’ conference in Gum San centre’s Great Hall on May 20.

“Stolen firearms and ammunition in the hands of unauthorised people in our community, caused by ineffective storage or security, is not acceptable nor will it be tolerated,” he said.

Other speakers at the conference will discuss issues of interest to the tourism sector. The topics include the rise of an Asian visitor markets, marketing in a digital world and major projects that Grampians Tourism is planning.

“There are strict requirements to hold a firearms licence and with this comes the responsibility of safe and secure storage.”

Sen Const MacDonald said people needed to ensure their firearm storage and security was ‘more than’ adequate.

“This includes minimising access to them by ensuring buildings are locked when no one is there and never leave firearms in unlocked vehicles,” he said.

“We can all contribute to a safer community simply by keeping an eye out for one another and remember if it’s worth noting it’s worth reporting. ‘Beat Me’ shares win ette and Change Course all the way to the wire, hitting the winning post locked together in a three-way photo.

The judge was called to separate the duo but was unable to find a margin between You Can’t Beat Me and Sweet Silhouette eventually declaring a dead-heat in a thrilling finish.

orsham trainer Paul Preusker’s consistent galloper You Can’t Beat Me finally lived up to his name breaking his maiden duck at Stawell last Monday.

The gelding took his place in an 1100-metre scamper restricted to three-year-old horses. Multiple Horsham Cup-winning jockey Holly McKechnie was aboard for the $15,000 event carrying lucrative bonus prize money.

You Can’t Beat Me was held in high regard by on and off course punters, who backed him into favouritism just before start time. Once the gates flew open, the son of Cornerstone Stud resident stallion Face Value began fairly lobbing into a mid-field position early.

Under hard riding from Gatt, Bunchloch picked himself up off the canvas and in a last-ditch effort on the rain effected ground was able to reel in the leaders scoring by a slender margin on the winning post.

The win was Bunchloch’s second in a 13-start career and after showing solid staying ability to would be no surprise to see him adapt well to the jumping caper in the future.

Liston is back in Horsham where he is completing his Masters degree in civil engineering and said he was keen to rekindle his association with the Demons and coaches Jordyn Burke and Brad Hartigan.

Heavyweights to clash at Apsley top six. So where is the form of the mid-tier players?

The Bombers will bounce back hard this week and a potent forward line led by coach Adam Hall, Shane Oakley, Jordan Huff and Sam Weddell will get plenty of opportunities to capitalise on the work of midfielders Jon Dixon, Brent McIntyre, Jason Kerr and Matt Ward.

To play finals, teams need to bounce back from a loss hard so this week we get to see what the Bombers are made of. I expect them to grab the points in an entertaining shoot-out.

HORSHAM DISTRICT FOOTBALL LEAGUE

orsham District Football League’s match of the season to date will occur at Apsley where the two undefeated heavyweight and premiership favourites Edenhope-Apsley and Laharum will slug it out for early-season bragging rights.

Laharum’s Shannon Argall looms as the game breaker, his 40 goals in three games means the home side will either have to smash the Demons in the midfield and have the ball head their way or somehow find an opponent to nullify the big forward.

Winless

Jeremy Kealy might get first crack but he will look for help from his brother Bernie and also the experienced Chris Oliver.

Edenhope Apsley has plenty of tough nuts in around the contest, no harder than Dave McLeish and Brent Christie. With outside runners in Bartley Nolan and Taylor Milner the Saints have plenty of grunt and pace to take on the Demons.

Standing in the Saints’ way in the middle is two of the young guns of the league in Daniel Eason and Robbie Miller. Both Demons have had outstanding starts to the season and will provide plenty of headaches for EdenhopeApsley’s brains trust.

It might well come down to a shootout. Both sides have plenty of firepower but Laharum might have a little bit more midfield depth and should get home just in a high-class contest.

Kees Rampaging Kalkee visits Taylors Lake and the Kees should continue on their winning way after coming off 200 and 185-point wins in the last fortnight.

BIG GUNS: Edenhope-Apsley co-coach James Dixon kicked five goals against Taylors Lake to reach 16 for the season, while Laharum assistant coach Shannon Argall has 40 goals from three matches.

Hobbs will control the middle while Josh Mibus, Ben Lawson and Ben Hobbs will be miserly in defence.

The Lakers will again look to the likes of Jason Kannar, veteran Brett Monaghan and Nathan Koening to provide spark but the Kees would have shorter odds than Black Cavier and they will kick another big score.

Who would have thought after round three we would see a clash of two winless sides that included Swifts.

The Baggies have played in the last two preliminary finals but they haven’t started well this season. Pimpinio will venture to Stawell on the back of a respectable performance against Edenhope-Apsley and coach Daryl Eastwell will be pumping his troops up for what looms as a winnable game.

Swifts have match-winners all over the ground but finding consistency is the key. Ricky Whitehead, sitting deep in defence, looks sadly out of form. Sean Mantell oozes class through the middle and Scott Carey provides plenty of run and carry but Paul Hanns will be looking for more from the likes of Liam Nuske, Ben Martin and Owen Phillips.

To win the Tigers will need Cam Ellis, Alex Hill and Simon Risson to provide the leadership and strong bodies around the contest for their younger team-mates. It’s hard to pin-point what has gone wrong for the Baggies but they will get a win this weekend and get their season heading in the right direction.

Rebound

Taylors Lake is being competitive for a half before falling away, which must be a worry for coach Ian McCulloch.

If the Rams win they could be just about be considered legitimate finals contenders. But if the Roos, who upset the unbeaten NoradjuhaQuantong, repeat the dose this week they will be right back in the hunt.

orsham Saints will put an improved Horsham RSL Diggers to the test under lights at Horsham City Oval tonight as an intriguing Wimmera Football League season gathers momentum.

Former Demon Josh Rentsch also shone in the win, adding sting to a familiar best-player list including Ollie Braithwaite and Daniel Baker.

Fans can expect a ripping game.

But the Saints and the rest of the competition might fall short of getting accurate insight into the new-look Diggers with the availability of recruits in question for the Anzac Day clash.

Perc Bushby Cup Another Sunday clash will also be full of expectation with Ararat making its season debut at home in the first of the season’s Perc Bushby Cup battles for the Great Divide against Stawell.

Horsham RSL’s unveiling of a handful of newcomers against Nhill last week even had supporters guessing must most, despite a narrow loss to the Tigers, liked what they saw.

While the 11th-hour new blood slotted in neatly across the ranks, it was eye-catching assistant coach Damian Cameron and full forward Steve Nicholson that caught the interest of many opposition supporters.

The athletic Cameron from Tatyoon is an obvious standout utility while Nicholson, from Ballarat League ranks, is set to provide the Diggers with key-position flexibility.

Nicholson in the goal-square and new rucking division allows spearhead Kye Chapple to have a roaming commission and allows Luke Chamberlain to concentrate on a key defensive role.

The influx of quality players also provides the Diggers with an enviable problem of finding the best spot for Justin Garth.

With the mercurial Jacob Cooke-Harrison in red-hot form and Dennis Adams making a quality impression in the Saints’ win over MinyipMurtoa last week, the tri-colours appear to have the Diggers’ measure.

The Saints’ pace, especially now Addison Milner has joined the ranks, and emerging talent will be a worry for Horsham RSL, which relies heavily on the dash of Kyal Murray.

Buoyant Eagles Horsham RSL tripped up against the pace of Nhill last week and Nhill will need all of its legs pumping to upstage a buoyant Warrack Eagles at Warracknabeal on Saturday.

The Tigers displayed tremendous patience and composure in the face of a concerted Diggers assault and with an effervescent goal-kicker Mathew Jones running from the square looked good.

Nhill’s list also looked fresh with William Oakley, Nathan Devanny and Will Kelly all having a profound impact on the result.

Minyip-Murtoa bye

The Eagles of course had the league abuzz by narrowly beating reigning premier Horsham last week and will be hard to contain at Anzac Park.

Stawell was two points ahead of Dimboola at half time last week, providing team leaders with plenty to work with but the struggle to kick second-half goals would have been worrying.

Thomas Eckel impressed first up for the Warriors, as did Toby Reid and others such as Cam Kimber, Todd Matthew with four goals and Zac Marrow did well.

Ararat looms as a relative unknown in the competition this year with Sunday providing a curious northern league contingent with a first look of its wares.

Nhill’s defence was miserly last week and will have to again apply the screws to keep tabs on goal-front ace Peter Weir.

The Eagles’ success took many by surprise considering their list of departures but a quality core remains and it is no surprise the cool head of Ben Spicer played a pivotal role in the result and Jarred Martin was in the thick of it all.

Anticipation The result was far from what Horsham would have wanted as a lead in to much-anticipated clash with Dimboola on Sunday.

The Demons, with a new hierarchy in charge, meet the Stuart Farr-led Roos at Dimboola with the Roos still wiping blood from the sword after dispatching Stawell.

Sales: Small is still big business K

een to get a slice of Australia’s biggest new-car market segment? You’ll have to think small. That’s certainly happened at Nissan, where the reborn Pulsar has already cemented a big slice of the small-car sales pie.

LITTLE ATHLETICS: Mazda3 has dominated March’s smallcar sales, and sales overall, but the newer Nissan Pulsar is off to a strong start.

Sales of Toyota’s Prius V peoplemover doubled that of its long-running environmental hero, the Prius, to peg 82 sales for the month.

That is before the hatchback, expected in early June, and warmedover SSS models, hit showrooms.

Nissan public relations and corporate communications manager Peter Fadeyev said it was still too early to say if the Pulsar was selling purely on the strength of its name.

“It’s a very difficult question to answer, but our research shows the Pulsar name resonated very well with Australian small-car buyers years after it had been replaced by the Tiida name,” Mr Fadeyev said.

“I think on balance the Pulsar vehicle should be credited with sales success because it has a very good blend of generous product specification and driveway pricing – it delivers that good balance.”

It held second place behind the Mazda3, posting more than 3500 sales for the month and growing market share.

The small hatchback was updated last year with fresh, futuristic looks, while the sedan is set to carry on wearing its pre-update face until sometime early next year.

In March, more than 1600 of Nissan’s completely redesigned small sedan rolled out of showrooms according to VFACTS data, making it the 10th most popular car sold in Australia last month.

Too early

well, despite the Japanese car-maker having only half a new model range.

Hybrids Pulsar sold so well in March that it bumped Australia’s once longrunning bestseller, the Holden Commodore, out of the monthly top 10 models for the first time in the car’s 36-year history.

Holden’s senior manager of communications, Shayna Welsh, said the softer result of Cruze ahead of the release of a radically redesigned version was expected.

Holden has double the reason to leave the champagne in the fridge after March also saw its other locally made model, the Cruze, lose more market share.

“We’ll be hopeful that our numbers will start to pick up after that,” Ms Welsh said. “The new Cruze has a lot more content than the outgoing one, and we’ve even cut the price of the entry-level model.”

The Cruze hatchback, sedan and imported wagon range has fallen almost 19 percent compared with March last year. Convert that figure to cumulative sales so far this year, and that decline jumps to 30 percent.

However, she said the number of new entrants in the small-car class and the fierce competition for buyers, along with problems associated with the changeover to a new ordering system, were still having an effect.

The darling of the market so far this year, though, is still the ageing Mazda3.

Mazda sold more than 3700 of its sedan and hatchback small cars in March, taking the title as Australia’s most popular car for the month.

That was also despite sales softening by almost one percent compared with March last year, and sales for the first three months of this year falling almost 10 percent.

An all-new Mazda3 wearing a full suite of the Japanese car-maker’s SkyActiv fuel-saving technology is expected late this year.

Toyota’s Corolla is still tracking

Honda’s Civic sedan, petrol-electric hybrid and hatch range sold almost 1400 units in March, while its hybrid cousin, the Insight, sold just four.

The Japanese car-maker will add a diesel drivetrain to its Civic hatch, giving it an engine that should give more rolling sparkle than the longserving 1.8 and 2.0-litre petrol fourcylinders it has traditionally used.

FLESHED OUT: The previous Kuga range was limited, and the Escape before it was too old, but the new-generation Ford Kuga promises to match the best in the compact SUV business.

ord Australia president and CEO Bob Graziano has defended the continued low uptake of EcoBoost four-cylinder versions of the Falcon large car, a year on from its launch.

The Blue Oval released its first four-pot Falcon – powered by a potent 179kW/353Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged directinjection petrol engine – in April 2012, addressing concerns over the Australianmade sedan’s fuel consumption compared to popular small cars and increasingly frugal compact SUVs. While the company predicted small volumes at first as it sought to show buyers that the downsized engine would have sufficient poke, it was thought the more frugal offering could eventually win back customers and help arrest the car’s continued sales decline.

Falcon sedan sales have continued to fall and deliveries were down 34.8 percent last month – 831 units – compared to March 2012 – before the introduction of EcoBoost.

whole down 32.9 percent in March as Holden also struggles with the Commodore.

While official VFACTS industry figures do not break down the proportion of Falcon sales by powertrain, combined sales of the EcoBoost petrol and six-cylinder EcoLPI gas versions were believed to account for around 16 percent.

This means the vast majority of Falcon sales continue to use the Geelong-built inline-six engine, leaving only a trickle of imported EcoBoost fours.

General Motors is testing a four-cylinder engine on the Commodore’s ‘Zeta’ platform, but has indicated that it is ‘not

in the near future’ for Holden’s Australian-built large car, due largely to the slow sales of the four-cylinder Falcon.

GM’s global executive chief engineer for luxury and rearwheel-drive cars, David Leone, told GoAuto in New York that he had ‘tracked the data and the four-cylinder Falcon from a sales standpoint is insignificant – it doesn’t look like it helped them’.

“Perception lags reality in this business and it is quite a good car but it doesn’t appear to be getting the customer,” he said.

Ford taps compact SUV boom Ford Australia says it has the ammunition it needs to be a ‘serious contender’ in the booming compact SUV market with the launch of its new-generation Kuga.

While negative Ford talk has focused on the drop in Falcon sales in recent years, the brand’s other major Achilles heel in Australia has undoubtedly been its lack of a softroader rival.

While rivals made hay as buyers continued their move en masse into high-riding compact wagons, Ford languished with its offerings of the pricey previous-generation Kuga and the aged Escape.

The superseded Kuga – launched here only last February, strangely close to the end of its life cycle – has managed to grab just one percent segment share this year, while in 2012, this was 1.1 percent.

But unlike its predecessor – which was available in highly specified petrol form only – the new Kuga range runs the gamut, being available in petrol and diesel configuration, in either front or all-wheel drive, and priced as low as $27,990 plus on-road costs.

THE GOOD OIL: Civic’s 1.6-litre engine makes it the most economical choice in the Japanese car-maker’s line-up.

N

issan will add a diesel model to its Dualis compact soft-roader on May 1, in a mild shakeup of what will become a broadly more expensive model range.

The Japanese car-maker today announced that while the 1.6-litre ‘TS’ turbo-diesel version joins the range, prices have gone up and the richlykitted ‘Ti’ variant has been culled as part of a model consolidation.

Nissan says the new engine is available with an idle-stop system that can automatically switch off while the Dualis is stopped in traffic, and automatically re-start it as soon as the driver’s foot lifts off the brake pedal.

The engine produces 98kW of power, not far off the 2.0-litre petrol engine’s 102kW, and gains a meaty 320Nm of torque from just off idle to help get the small soft-roader rolling, compared with the petrol engine’s 198Nm. is high, the engine is only available mated to a six-speed manual transmission and is not shared with the stretched wheelbase, seven-seat Dualis+2 – both factors that may dampen its appeal.

The diesel Dualis is based on the petrol-engined entry-level ST model, which has had an equipment lift to include 17inch alloy wheels as well as a reversing camera and satellite navigation as standard.

However, where it will shine in the eyes of many buyers is fuel use. Officially the Dualis will consume 4.5 litres of diesel for every 100 kilometres it travels, compared with figures ranging from 8.1-8.4L/100km for its petrol-engined sibling.

Going diesel also adds foglights, privacy glass and extra chrome features as part of its $4000 price hike over the entry-level manual Dualis.

Nissan says this is enough to give the diesel-engined Dualis a 1445-kilometre range between refills, and the best fuel economy in its price and size class.

It could have been a $5000 price hike, though, had Nissan not also added $1000 to variants in the Dualis range, including the entry-level ST, which now starts from $25,990 before on-road costs.

Honda launches Prius-fighter

Honda’s most fuel-efficient model yet in Australia is now on sale – and it doesn’t even wear a hybrid badge.

The Civic ‘DTi-S’ diesel, based on the British-built hatchback, is priced from $26,990 plus on-road costs, a $1500 premium to the midspecification Civic VTi-L it closely matches on equipment.

However, it is fuel economy that will have most buyers interested.

Officially, the Civic diesel will sip just 4.0 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined cycle, bettering a long list of mostly more expensive petrolelectric rivals.

This includes Honda’s own Insight hatch – from $29,990 and using 4.3L/100km, the city-friendly Jazz hybrid – from $22,990 and 4.5L/100km, and Civic Hybrid sedan – from $35,990 and 4.4L/100km, and almost matching Toyota’s environmental hero, the Prius – from $33,990 and 3.9L/100km.

Emissions for the Civic diesel are rated at 105 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometre.

This beats the smaller Jazz hybrid by two grams, but is not quite as good as either the Civic hybrid or Insight.

The Prius, though, officially emits only 89g/km, trumping them all.

VW Golf fans in seventh heaven V

olkswagen put the entire Australian small-car segment on notice by announcing a razor-sharp starting price of $21,490 plus on-road costs for the seventhgeneration Golf.

Arriving on our shores eight months after it premiered in Europe, the latest iteration of the company’s trademark model is larger, substantially better-equipped, more frugal and – at the entry level – significantly more powerful than before.

Even better, Volkswagen has introduced something it has lacked in the face of stiff competition – capped price servicing. Golf owners will be able to see the cost of the work done under the bonnet of their Golfs for up to six years and over 90,000 kilometres.

The new Golf’s styling may be evolutionary – the differences are more marked in person – but under the skin sits an entirely new modular lightweight platform, new engines – with the same capacities – and a plethora of active safety technology not found on its predecessor.

Succesful formula As the company puts it, ‘the new Golf improves on a successful formula but does not cost any more’ – something that is sure to catch the ears of those considering arguably lesspremium offerings such as the Mazda3, Toyota Corolla and Holden Cruze.

Performance enthusiasts will have to hold their horses for now, though. Today’s launch includes only the regular, mainstream Golf hatch.

The Highline will also be the only version offered with a diesel powertrain, now called the 110TDI. The price of entry is the same as the old 103TDI, but performance is boosted with a more potent 110kW/320Nm 2.0-litre turbo-diesel unit with a claimed fuel use of 4.9L/100km.

Highline grades get standard equipment including satellite navigation, 17-inch alloy wheels, piano black cabin inserts and cloth/ Alcantara ‘sports’ seats, among other things.

The German brand’s Australian arm has streamlined its range of offerings, axing the slow-selling 77TSI price-leader in favour of the $500 cheaper, and vastly better-equipped, base 90TSI. It may make do with cheapo steel wheels like its 77TSI predecessor, but inside the cabin and under the bonnet things are markedly upgraded.

Standard equipment includes a 5.8-inch touchscreen with smartphone-style swiping, USB and Bluetooth connections, cruise control with speed limiter and a driver fatigue sensor.

Powering this is a 1.4-litre engine that produces the same 90kW and 200Nm as the old midrange 90TSI, but VW claims to have redesigned every feature except for the cylinder spacing. A Comfortline version of the 90TSI is also now available, priced from $24,990.

The Comfortline adds, over and above the base, a reversing camera, 16-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, front and rear parking sensors, automatic headlights and bigger seat bolsters. Satellite navigation is more reasonable at $950 – it was $2500 on the Golf VI. Replacing the 118TSI turbocharged/supercharged unit from the Golf VI is a less powerful, 16 percent more frugal single-turbo unit with the same 1.4-litre capacity, but downgraded outputs of 103kW, and 250Nm from 1500rpm.

This engine is available exclusively on the flagship Highline specification grade, priced from $31,990 – same as the outgoing 118TSI. Because the larger of the two new petrol units comes with cylinder de-activation – a feature traditionally the province of larger capacity engines with more cylinders – it is marginally more efficient, with claimed combined fuel use

Driver assistance All variants bar the base are available with a $1300 driver assistance package that adds a load of active safety equipment including adaptive cruise control, a system that scans the road in front of the Golf and automatically jumps on the brakes if a collision is likely, driver-assisted automated parking for both forward and parallel bays, and a ‘proactive’ occupant protection system that closes the sunroof and tightens seatbelts when it senses an imminent crash.

All variants come with the ‘XDL’ system used on the current Golf VI GTI hot hatch, which brakes the inside front wheel to negate understeer, where the front of the car tries to push wide around a corner. The range is standard with seven airbags and has just received the maximum five-star ANCAP crash test rating.

Holden-built SUV potential ‘very possible’ General Motors has highlighted the potential for Holden to build an SUV in Australia based on the next-generation Cruze small-car platform.

Asked whether an SUV based on the D2XX underpinnings that will form a basis for the next Cruze could be produced in Australia, GM executive chief engineer for luxury and rear-wheel-drive cars David Leone told GoAuto: “I don’t think that we’ve announced anything but that could be very possible.”

it would continue producing cars in Australia until at least 2022, with two next-generation vehicles built on global platforms.

Holden has confirmed these will be a redesigned Cruze and new-generation Commodore.

GM has not set an official end date to production of Zeta-based vehicles, some of which could remain in service for years to come.

“We plan to produce Zeta for the next several years. We have a product plan there – we still have several years of product to sell,” he said.

vergence of Zeta and other rear-drive platforms but we haven’t announced anything formal about a converging of architectures so it would be premature to state that.”

Mr Leone ruled out the potential for keeping the Zeta architecture alive by moving production to North America, for example to maintain production of the Caprice PPV. “The issue is the volume, it takes significant volume to be able to pay for the tools to do that and the volume with the Chevy SS is indicatively relatively low, the number of police cars we sell is relatively low,” he said.
