Ray Carman from Horsham Fire Brigade will again lead a team of volunteers and fire trucks through the streets of Horsham to raise money for Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal. Brief bursts of truck sirens will herald the arrival on tin-rattling volunteers into neighbourhoods from 9am, tomorrow. Volunteers will also be collecting donations at Horsham traffic lights from 8.30am to 1pm. Horsham money-raising efforts have already reached last year’s $43,000 total with a Horsham Safeway team leading the way. Volunteers in many centres across the region have also planned Good Friday fundraisers.

red wine produced at Mount Cole near Ararat has captured the attention of the Chinese market after winning gold medals at one of the biggest international wine competitions in Asia.
“We’ve been travelling across for three or four years and recently sent three pallets for a market that is very interesting. For example, one thing we’ve been trying to get through is how screw caps allow for better quality assurance than corking. One of our difficulties is that it’s very hard now to get wines bottled under cork in Australia.”
The Fenix Rising Reserve Shiraz 2010 from Dr Graeme Bertuch’s Mount Cole Wineworks impressed judges at the China Wine and Spirits Awards Best Value 2013, the only awards in the world judged specifically for the Chinese market.
Dr Bertuch said the success was also good for the Grampians Pyrenees wine industry. The best-value awards reflect the ‘best value’ from the highest to and lowest areas in the price spectrum and in Hong Kong and China being considered ‘best value’ at all price levels is critical.
Judges, including key Chinese wine importers, distributors, wholesalers, restaurant group owners and sommeliers or wine stewards based in China, assed 3300 entries from 25 countries. Dr Bertuch’s shiraz was one of 219 gold medals won by Australian producers who won the overall medal tally from France, 97. Dr Bertuch, an Ararat district general practitioner who has also been in the wine industry

Eltringham wins state engineering award Horsham Rural City Council’s retired technical services general manager David Eltringham has won a statewide engineering award. Mr Eltringham won Public Works Engineer of the Year award at a 2013 Awards for Excellence dinner in Melbourne. The award was part of the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australia, Victoria Division conference. Horsham mayor Cr David Grimble announced the win and congratulated Mr Eltringham on his award. “David won the award in part for his extensive and outstanding involvement with the Wimmera Intermodal Freight Terminal or WIFT project, but also for his over 42 years of service within
the engineering discipline and his role as Engineers Australia president,” he said. Cr Grimble said the WIFT project also won a special commendation certificate in a Capital Works Excellence category.

ome of us found ourselves chuckling as we followed the Federal Labor Party circus in the media last week.
It was hard to keep a straight face when the serious intrigue and plotting involving some of our parliamentary heavyweights started to resemble a distorted and bizarre form of school-yard tiggy.

In a typical Australian response, satirical jokes were soon flowing through social communication channels like a flash flood – quips such as ‘I’ve seen a better ‘spill’ in my kitchen’ quickly doing the rounds.
The only thing missing from all the bluster and log-jam of microphones and commentary for a few hours last Thursday was someone saying ‘you’re it’.
Some people suggested the whole saga would have made a great subject for a Shakespearean comedy. Others were less refined, suggesting that key Labor Party personalities should call themselves the ‘Wizards of Oz’ because they were searching for a heart, a brain and a soul in the absence of traditional Labor Party values and integrity.
In the end, an awful lot of ‘nothing’ happened and Julia Gillard retained the Labor Party leadership
The reality of course is that as far as Australian governance goes – this was far from funny at all.

Katter’s party Mildura grape-grower Vince Cirillo, meanwhile, will know within the next week if he will be Katter’s Australian Party candidate for Mallee. Mr Cirillo, who plans to visit the Wimmera at the end of April if he wins preselection, said the electorate had ‘lost so much under the Nationals’ during last two decades and there was a need to reinvigorate confidence in Mallee’s farming sector. “There needs to be a future for young people to stay on the land. If we don’t change course for them the future might be very bleak,” he said. Lydia Senior already has Australian Labor Party endorsement to stand for Mallee and the Liberal Party, which can contest the seat despite being in coalition with the Nationals, has yet to confirm or deny if it will call for candidates.

orsham St Brigid’s College student Grace Ostapiw has finished runner-up in the Victorian section of a national Simpson History Prize.
The branch received permission to officially fly the flag in the year of the 100th anniversary of the first RAN fleet arriving in Sydney Harbour.
The year-11 student was one of about 1000 teenagers across Australia who entered the competition with essays and audio-visual presentations involving the story of ANZAC.
Commodore Michael Houghton, RAN’s director-general of major surface ships and defence material organisation will be attending officer at Horsham Anzac ceremonies.
The competition asked students to ‘investigate what primary sources revealed about the Gallipoli experience and explore the extent to which they explained the origins of the ANZAC Legend.’ Grace, who captured the attention of last year’s crowd at Horsham ANZAC Day commemoration service with a moving presentation, spent many hours preparing her competition submission. She was in Canberra to accept accolades with state winners and runners-up last week. Federal School Education Minister Peter Garrett, who congratulated winners and runners-up, said the top performers in the competition had shown ‘an impressive depth of understanding about Gallipoli and our ANZAC history’. “The calibre of entries was high with students’ essays highlighting the battlefield conditions at Gallipoli vividly through the use of primary sources,” he said.

Ararat Rural City Council will have a byelection later this year to replace Cr Murray Woods. Mayor Cr Ian Wilson confirmed that Cr Woods, who has been on the council since December 2008, had resigned due to ill health. “While it is very unfortunate that Cr Woods is unable to continue his role as councillor, the

he Grampians will again offer art-lovers an Easter weekend feast with preparations in place for an annual Grampians Art Trail. The art trail, centred on Halls Gap but also including Ararat, Stawell, Wartook, Landsborough, Great Western and Callawadda, again features several highly acclaimed artists exhibiting and showcasing how they produce their work. Galleries and exhibition areas will open between 10am to 4pm on every day of the weekend, providing visitors with insight into art works and a chance to gain an understanding of the influences of individual artists.
The art trail has been a feature of the Easter weekend in the Wimmera for several years and attracts art enthusiasts from across Victoria and interstate. Bumper program planned for Grampians Grape Escape P
re-event ticket sales for this year’s Grampians Grape Escape are well up on last year and a record number of exhibitors is locked in, according to festival organisers. This May’s two-day food and wine
festival in Halls Gap will be headlined by MasterChef Australia’s Poh Ling Yeow, who will conduct twicedaily cooking demonstrations. There will be a major focus on 150 years of winemaking in the Grampians region, with unique interactive presentations of historic photographs
and documentation. Festival director David Wheaton said organisers expected 8000 people to the May 4-5 event. He said there would be 12 new exhibitors this year including The Forge Pizzeria, Darriwell Farm and Roxburgh House catering.
“Grampians Winemakers will host the dynamic Barrique Auction on the Saturday and a 150th dinner on the Saturday night in the main tent,” Mr Wheaton said. “Grampians Produce will also have some exciting activities over the weekend.” Several lead- up events will be held
across the region by Grampians Produce and Grampians Winemakers, including delectable dinners, cooking classes and wine tastings. The popular Scarecrows in the Vineyard competition will also return to Montara Winery with final voting on site at the festival.

Collett has worked full time as a professional artist and designer for more than 30 years. She has exhibited extensively and is represented in Ararat gallery, Art Gallery of South Australia, Mildura Arts Centre, Northern Territory Museum and Art Gallery and the Victorian State Craft collections.
Plastic in all its forms produces enormous amounts of everyday waste and Collett uses recycled ‘trash’ to fashion a vast array of artwork. She uses discarded materials from domestic items such as plastic lids, children’s toys, broken jewellery and containers and implements to make bold and vibrant work, highlighting the aesthetics of waste.

Dog expert primed for return International dog-behavior expert Tony Knight is likely to return to the Wimmera later this year after a sell-out presentation in Stawell. Organiser Anne Johns of Stawell said Knight would return for another presentation in May or September and possible a two-day foundation course in Horsham. “We sold out and probably could’ve again. We had 60 people attend and had very positive feedback from everyone,” she said. “Since then I have had inquiries about when he will be coming back and I
have already got names on a waiting list.” Mrs Johns said people from Horsham. ore than 300 HarleyDavidson motorcycle enthusiasts will rumble into Horsham this weekend to take part in Victorian State Rally of HOG, or Harley Owners Group.
Horsham Police Highway Patrol has been involved in the event’s Thunder Run. Sergeant John McTaggart asked road users to ‘exercise a little road courtesy and patience to ensure everyone’s safety’ when coming across the Harley parade on Easter Saturday.
Rally committee member Shane Rees encouraged people with a keen interest in classic motorcycles to watch a Rally Thunder Ride pass through Horsham and to see motorcycles close up at a Show ‘n’ Shine at May Park on Easter Saturday.
“The chapter will have corner marshals throughout the circuit to indicate the route to riders,” he said.

Mr Rees said the Horsham rally had attracted Harley devotees from as far as Bundaberg in Queensland.
“A spectacular parade of Harleys will be passing through Horsham about 10.15am along McPherson and Wilson streets and after a short scenic ride, return about 10.45am from Golf Course Road into O’Callaghan Parade and Firebrace Street,” he said.

aster seems to have come early this year – it’s like we’ve only just recovered from Christmas!
Walking through the shops, however, there are chickens, eggs and bunnies everywhere. I have to admit, however, that my favourite rabbits are more likely to be furry than chocolaty. At Animal Aid, we see many rabbits in both our clinic and shelter. Traditionally, rabbits – along with guinea pigs – have been considered pets for small children. All too often when the novelty of these cute, fluffy creatures wears off, they spend many years living in hutches without too much attention from their owners. I’ve always thought it’s a great shame, both for the bunnies in question and the owners who aren’t getting the most from their pets. Luckily attitudes are changing. Australian rabbit owners are realising that their bunnies can have huge amounts of personality and form rewarding bonds with their owners and other pets. There are many important points to consider in owning a rabbit because these creatures are very different from dogs and cats and have very different requirements in terms of their housing, health care, and particularly diet. Rabbits are herbivores and their teeth and gastrointestinal tracts are perfectly engineered to cope with large quantities of fibre such as grass and hay. The flip side of this is that sugary or starchy foods can play havoc with their teeth and digestion. The ideal rabbit diet consists

primarily of good-quality hay and fresh grass. They will also love leafy greens and smaller amounts of vegetable such as carrot, with fruit as a treat. Commercial pelleted diets should be avoided because they are high in energy and low in fibre and will result in overweight rabbits.
Vaccination Rabbits should also be vaccinated each year, providing protection against the rabbit Calicivirus. Most rabbit owners will be aware that rabbits are prone to the fatal viral disease myxamotosis, which kills many wild rabbits each year. Sadly there is no vaccine available in Australia, but we can protect rabbits by keeping them away from mosquitoes which spread the disease. This means keeping them indoors, or making sure that
hutches are well screened. In addition, it’s worth investing in having rabbits desexed, particularly if they live in pairs or groups – the term ‘breeding like rabbits’ doesn’t come from nowhere! Even single rabbits should be desexed, as neutering helps avoid behavioural problems such as aggression. Many rabbits can be trained to use a litter tray, and as such can be fabulous indoor pets for a small house or apartment dwellers. They will often form lovely relationships with other pets such as cats and dogs. On the whole, with the appropriate care, rabbits can make really valuable pets, chock full of affection and quirky habits. • Dr Vogt is senior veterinarian at Animal Aid in Melbourne. High Fraar impressive Hockey hunt been enjoying good success courtesy of his consistent gallopers. Bungalally Boy is one horse in particular who is earning his keep at the stables. This continued at Donald last Monday as the chestnut took his place in a 1200-metre sprint event for class-one gallopers.
One is a black Labrador-cross, female, young, energetic and friendly. The other is a male fox terrier-cross, between four and six years old, friendly and a great companion dog. Former Dodson apprentice Holly McKechnie was booked to ride the gelding, quoted at $9 in most betting markets. Once the starting stalls burst open Bungalally Boy began like a shot out of a gun landing in a prominent position, giving his Horsham hoop an armchair ride up on the pace throughout.
The four-year-old bay mare took her place in a maiden event over 1850 metres. Horsham hoop Christine Puls was booked to take the mount and was also chasing her first win since returning to the saddle after an injury enforced layoff.
At the home turn McKechnie steered the son of ‘stud dud’ Kempinsky into clear galloping room and with a couple of reminders from the ‘shilelagh’ Bungalally Boy was able to produce a tenacious effort to overhaul eventual second place getter De Pony in the run to the post recording a winning margin of two lengths.
cKenzie Creek-based trainer Paul Preusker made the hour-long trip to Edenhope last Saturday with his promising but equally frustrating staying galloper High Fraar.
Local punters were hopeful of a bold showing from High Fraar backing her into favoritisim as the starter called the horses into their starting positions. Once the field of eight were sent on their way, Puls was able to slide into the box seat just behind the leaders. Approaching the 600-metre mark, the daughter of recently deceased stallion Fraar was travelling like a winner, and in the blink of an eye established a three-length advantage over her rivals at the home turn. In the run to the judge High Fraar treated her rivals arrogantly increasing her lead to win by five lengths. The dominance of this victory suggests this girl has found her niche as a stayer and fun times are sure to be ahead for her patient owners.

Horsham Hockey Club is on the hunt for new players to take part in this year’s Wimmera Hockey Association season. The club is looking for junior and male and female players for its respective Bombers, Hurricanes and Highlanders teams. The club also has a beginners’ minkey program for children aged from five to 11. Horsham club training has started at Cornell Park with juniors from 4pm and 5pm and seniors 5.45pm to 7.15pm on Wednesday nights. The Wimmera Association season starts on April 20 and as well as the Horsham club, also features teams from Kaniva, Yanac, Nhill, Dimboola and Warracknabeal. All association weekly games are at one venue each weekend and rotate between the centres.

omers are set to continue a Horsham Cricket Association dynasty after premiership victory confirmed their status as the best cricket outfit across the central Wimmera.
The extended Hopper family remains at the core of the talented group which dispatched Rupanyup-Minyip at Horsham City Oval last weekend and are not going anywhere. The Hopper legacy, stretching back to association patriarch the late Cec Hopper, picked up by his sons David and Barry and now in the hands of Ash, Chris, Simon and Tim, will continue to throw down the gauntlet to all challengers. It was no surprise that Chris Hopper, after bludgeoning big scores with his aggressive batting style and continually taking wickets with his leftarm orthodox spinners, won the association’s Cec Hopper Medal. In games including finals this season he made 746 runs at 67.82 and captured 37-474 at 12.81. When the Hoppers fail or need help to make things happen in the Horsham cricket world then others around seem to pick up the baton. That’s exactly what happened in the grand final. Off-spinning all-rounder Simon Hopper, 5-38, proved a destroyer as Rupanyup-Minyip limped to 196 on Saturday but it was Pigeons skipper Lachie Jones who then led the way in the run chase. First-drop Jones, in form and making 640 runs during the season but often batting in the shadows of efficient opening pair Sandy Hodge and Jason Templeton or big-hitting Chris Hopper this season, shone in

alk casually with any Horsham District Football League supporter and the conversation will ultimately involve a simple but profound declaration. It will go something like: ‘regardless of what happens this season, Kalkee already has one hand on the premiership’ or ‘you may as well dust off the premiership cup and give it to them now’ and so on. It is true that the reigning premier looms as big if not bigger and more powerful than previous years and it seems on the surface at least that the early predictions might be close to the mark. It’s a curious circumstance, particularly for the Kalkee coaching group which has to develop creative motivational strategies. But if the build has worried Kees coach Matt Beddison it certainly doesn’t show. In fact the pragmatic Beddison said this week that the motivation was simple – to continue to back up the hard work of club volunteers be successful for the next five to 10 years. He said talk about Kalkee being red-hot premiership favourites weeks out from the first game meant little. “For us it’s not really relevant, especially a couple of weeks away from the first game. Our focus has to

e could only imagine the enormous sense of irony if Dimboola was the club this year to end Horsham’s premiership domination of Wimmera Football League.
Apart from creating history in breaching what has been an impregnable fortress for the past decade, the Roos would find themselves patting former long-time Demons adversary Stuart Farr on the back.

Important The Dimboola project has included the introduction of a newly styled one-on-one junior academy program and an intense focus on cherishing club participants and members. “It’s something we’re really focussing on. It doesn’t matter if you are a paid player or a kid playing in the under-12s. Everyone is important in our club. We have learnt the hard way that we have to be like that,” Mr Pyers said. “We can’t take for granted that people will support us.” The Roos played in the finals last year and Farr’s appointment provided recruiting momentum that added Matt Everett and Ashley Clugston back into the fold. Former Horsham players Andrew Seers and Josh Rentsch are also on

he national athletics spotlight will slip over the Wimmera this weekend for what looms as one of the hottest Stawell Gift fields in years.

The Stawell Gift represents the season finale to the Victorian athletic season which has involved 29 carnivals across the state.
Speculation has always followed backmarkers in the famous footrace at Central Park but this year there is particular interest in the fastest men entered in the carnival.
Events apart from the 120-metre sprints, particularly middle and long-distance races, have also become an integral part of the carnival.
Jamaican and former 100-metre world record holder Asafa Powell, with a personal best 100-metre time of 9.72 seconds, will predictably wear the red scratch-marker colours and attempt to become the third runner in history to succeed from the mark.
Perennial favourite Tamsyn Manou nee Lewis, among popular athletes taking on the longer distances, will run for the final time at Central Park after competing in the carnival since 1994. Fellow Australian athletics star Craig Mottram, 2005 world championship bronze medallist, will also return to Stawell this weekend for the Herb Hedemann Invitation 1600 metres.
Two-time winner Joshua Ross, 32, meanwhile, who won from seven metres in 2003 and impressively from scratch in 2007, will start only one metre in front Powell, a victim of his outstanding lead-up. Matthew Wiltshire will be back to defend his title running off 5.5 metres and well back from his eight metres of last year. Subaru’s NY tease for next WRX S
ubaru appears poised to preview its eagerly awaited new WRX at the New York motor show after announcing plans to premiere a mystery ‘performance concept car’.
Details are scarce, but GoAuto understands the concept will likely give us our best look yet at what to expect from the third-generation Rex due on sale in 2014.
In a wider discussion on hybrid cars, prompted by news that Subaru’s US subsidiary plans to branch out into this area, Mr Senior said a similar time would come for Australia, but that it is not here yet.
AROUND THE BEND: The Subaru XV hybrid seen here will bow in New York, but it’s the likely appearance of a WRX concept – possibly resembling the previous recent concept show on the front page – that is creating real buzz.
“The timeline for it to be introduced into Australia has not even been discussed, indeed there are no plans for it to be introduced,” Mr Senior said. “There’s not a huge line of people waiting outside dealerships looking to buy hybrids, whether it’s Subaru, Toyota or any other company in Australia, so I think we have to be realistic and take hybrids one step at a time, to use a cliché,” he said.
The Japanese car-maker has already confirmed the next WRX will be styled differently to the regular Impreza, even though it will continue to share the same basic platform. It is unclear if the New York concept will preview the mechanicals, or just the styling.
Focus “The focus needs to be on what people want now rather than what they’re talking about down the track.
Smaller engine The next WRX is expected to move to a smaller displacement turbo-petrol engine, possibly a 2.0-litre as opposed to the current model’s 2.5-litre Boxer unit. Naturally, power will continue to be sent to all four wheels. However, the next-generation model could also feasibly go in a more radical direction by taking a leaf from the Subaru Viziv concept shown in Geneva this month, which supplemented an internal combustion engine with electric motors. GoAuto understands the new Rex
will make its production debut at the Tokyo motor show in November this year. Meanwhile, the ‘performance concept’ will be joined in New York by Subaru’s first production hybrid – a petrol-electric XV crossover pitched squarely at the North American market. The XV Crosstrek hybrid matches a combined internal combustion/electric powertrain to the company’s signature all-wheel-drive system, much
like the car-maker’s first attempt at a petrol-electric car – the non-production Hybrid Tourer Concept from 2009. But don’t expect to see it on sale in Australia any time soon, as Subaru has no plans at this stage to bring the car here. In an interview with GoAuto before the XV hybrid was revealed, Subaru Australia managing director Nick Senior said petrol-electric or dieselelectric cars were not a priority here
over the next few years. In the case of the XV, Mr Senior said he would prefer to see diesel and quicker turbo-petrol engines added to the range, stating that ‘our future is SUVs and performance vehicles’. Mr Senior said the larger turbo Forester XT was a popular and unique choice, and that he has lobbied for a conceptually similar XV variant. As both a crossover SUV and a performance car, such a vehicle would appear to be a natural fit.
“We have, as the rest of the industry has, has made significant inroads in reducing emissions, reducing fuel consumption and the cars that we are bringing in today at competitive market pricing – we are just not seeing that demand for hybrids. “Don’t say its not going to happen, because it will happen. ord’s all-new Kuga will provide the Blue Oval with better ammunition in the booming compact SUV segment when it goes on sale in May priced from $27,990 plus on-road costs.
The furore over rorting the temporary skilled work visa scheme could worsen the shortage of trained mechanics in this country, the Australian Motor Industry Federation has warned. AMIF chief executive Richard Dudley said proposed caps on the number of 457 visas issued could result in ‘Australia’s reliance on road transport grinding to a halt in regional and rural areas’.
Kicking off the range is the two-wheel drive manual Ambiente, pitched to steal sales from rivals the Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, Toyota RAV4 and Mitsubishi Outlander. But the Spanish-built Kuga is still priced slightly higher than Asian rivals like the Honda CR-V, which retails for $27,490 in base VTi form, while the popular Mazda CX-5 is $27,880 in frontwheel-drive Maxx guise.

The Ambiente will be the only FWD Kuga and the only variant offered with a manual gearbox, as the rest of the range is fitted with Ford’s ‘intelligent’ all-wheel drive system and automatic transmissions. Manual Ambiente variants are powered by a 110kW/240Nm 1.6-litre fourcylinder EcoBoost petrol engine, but a more powerful 134kW/240Nm version of the
same engine is fitted to allwheel drive automatic variants.
models are $44,740 in petrol guise or $47,740 for the diesel.
The AWD Ambiente comes with a six-speed torque-converter automatic transmission and costs $31,490, while moving up to the mid-spec Trend costs $36,240.
The pricing marks a saving of $2750 over the outgoing Kuga Trend that retails for $38,990, while the petrol Titanium is $250 less expensive than the equivalent outgoing model.
Adding an automatic transmission to the Ambiente costs $3500. Opting for a 120kW/340Nm 2.0-litre Duratorq turbo-diesel engine, matched with a sixspeed dual-clutch Powershift automatic transmission, ups the price to $39,240. Range-topping
Ford has not yet announced equipment levels for each Kuga variant, but confirmed the Trend and Titanium will be the first Fords in Australia to come with DAB+ digital radio.

Toyota set to reveal new Kluger T
oyota will reveal the thirdgeneration of its popular Kluger SUV at the New York auto show before it goes on sale in Australia in the first half of next year.

FAMILY FRIENDLY: The current Toyota Kluger has been a sales hit, and a new-generation one is imminent.
The second-generation Kluger was a major departure from the original version that Toyota launched in 2003, moving from a smaller boxy shape to the larger, more stylish version that quickly became a family favourite in Australia.
A Toyota spokesman confirmed that Australian-spec Klugers would be built at Toyota’s Princeton, Indiana plant in the US rather than Japan where the current model is sourced. The announcement that it will show the Kluger, sold in the US as the Highlander, comes after a busy period for the Japanese car-maker, which earlier this year released the smaller RAV4 and late last year launched the top-selling Corolla hatch. Also on the launch radar are the 86 cabriolet – premiered in concept form this month and expected to hit production this year – and the new Corolla sedan, due in late 2013 or early 2014.
Although sales for the Kluger are down by 4.6 percent this year, it is still the third best-selling large SUV in Australia with 989 units, trailing its Prado stablemate that recorded 1238 sales, while Ford’s locally built Territory leads the pack on 1316 sales so far this year. While no technical or specification details have been released, it is expected that the 2014 Kluger will continue with Toyota’s current sharper, more angular design language that is slowly making its way onto all mod-
els from the Yaris to the Camry. It is also unclear what drivetrains will appear in the next-gen Kluger, however there has been speculation that Toyota Australia will continue with its petrol-only policy.
Diesel ix35 Czechs in Hyundai Australia has added its potent 135kW diesel engine to the ix35 SE, cutting the entry price for an oil-burner in the compact crossover’s range by $2600.
Previously, the cheapest diesel in the ix35 line-up was the mid-spec Elite that retails for $37,590, but the addition of the SE – Special Edition – diesel brings it down to $34,990. In January, the South Korean car-maker introduced the Czech-built SE in front-wheel drive petrol guise for $29,990, slotting in between the entrylevel Active on which it is based and the Elite. Coming standard with allwheel drive, the ix35 SE is powered by Hyundai’s R-series CRDi turbo diesel that produces 135kW of power and 392Nm of torque and is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Features that differentiate the SE from the Korean-sourced

variants include a unique front bumper with fog lamps, automatic projector headlights, power folding side mirrors, rear privacy glass and 17-inch alloy wheels. The SE cabin gets some additional goodies such as a cooled glove box, heated seats front and rear and leather/ leatherette upholstery including leather trim for the steering wheel and gearshift knob. The ix35 comes with a fivestar ANCAP safety rating and
standard safety features include a reversing camera display in the interior mirror, six airbags, hill start assist, and downhill brake control. Hyundai’s Australian arm announced in January that it would source the ix35 SE from the Czech Republic because of favourable exchange rates and to help alleviate supply constraints out of South Korea. Expect a hybrid version to be offered in markets such as the US. It is unclear, however, if a petrol-electric version could make it to Australia.

Pirelli Australia deputy managing director Cesar Alarcon said the tyres that allowed a driver to keep rolling despite getting a puncture were still a long way from becoming an affordable option on cheap family fare, including the Holden Commodore, Ford Falcon and Toyota Aurion. “I don’t see it happening anytime soon,” Mr Alarcon said. “The fact that it weighs more means it costs more as well. “Clearly we cannot expect run-flats to go on a cheap car because it would not proportionately justify the price. “It’s a matter of complication as well, because if you don’t have the room in the boot to fit a tyre, then you need to fit a run-flat tyre – you can’t go without a spare,” he said.

According to Mr Alarcon, the premium end of the tyre market in Australia was considered as any wheel size above 17 inches in diameter. This market had grown by nine percent in Australia last year, he said.
