Police declaring ‘zero tolerance’ to assaults P

olice have declared war on criminal assault across the Wimmera and taken a no-tolerance stance against people responsible for assault-related incidents.
Horsham Acting Inspector Brendan Broadbent said police were ‘fed up’ with attending both family and nonfamily violence assaults in the region and would take firm action to stamp it out. He said Horsham police, in response to the criminal activity, had established a Family Violence and Crime Reduction team to specifically deal with the issue and provide follow-up support for frontline police officers. “We are adopting a no-toler-
ance approach toward people who are intent on ignoring the laws to commit violence against other people,� Acting Inspector Broadbent said. “Police intend to make a stand to confront this issue head on.� Acting Inspector Broadbent said a series of incidents had highlighted a need for police to take a stand.
“We’ve had an elderly man assaulted in the streets of Horsham, an incident that escalated out of hand during a local sporting event and each weekend police are called to disputes between people in and around licensed premises and in many residential locations,� he said. “The new crime team will be looking at all options available to deal with people who

and applied to each violent crime committed.�
“We are determined to ensure the real offenders committing these crimes are dealt with according to the full letter of the law.�
Acting Inspector Broadbent said police were also asking for community help to stamp out violence in the Wimmera.
Licensees Acting Inspector Broadbent said Horsham district police would work closely with licensees through a licensing accord to deal with assaults in and around licensed premises. He said this was to make sure all incidents of assault were subject to investigation and offenders banned from licensed premises. “We will be paying specific attention to recidivist offenders of assault by ensuring all avenues to obtain a satisfactory outcome are investigated
“People can contact police to report any assaults they see. They can do this by ringing their local police station or police emergency number ‘000’ or by contacting crime stoppers on 1800 333 000,� he said. He added that police would also be working with government departments such as the Dispute Settlement Centre of Victoria and welfare agencies such as Wimmera Uniting Care and Grampians Community Health to reduce assaults and to provide avenues such as mediation and counselling to resolve disputes.

he evolution of Natimuk as a regional hotbed for the arts has gained momentum with the Horsham district settlement winning a $350,000 State Government grant. Natimuk is one of five regional Victorian towns to receive the Regional Arts Victoria grant as part of a Small Towns Transformation program. The money will go towards creating artworks in a community public space. Regional Arts Victoria director Esther Anatolitis said the plans of the five towns selected in the program ‘exemplify bold artistic vision, intensive community participation, and strong commitment to creative place-making’.

New name during Food Fest Warracknabeal’s historic Commercial Hotel is now called The Creekside Hotel. Hotel owners Kevin and Sally Gebert used an inaugural Creekside Food Fest on the banks of Yarriambiack Creek last weekend to announce the change. The Geberts moved to Warracknabeal from the innerSydney suburb of Balmain in October 2011. The hotel has been known as ‘The Commercial’ since 1870. About 500 people from the Wimmera and beyond attended the Food Fest, which capped off a big week in the northern Wimmera town. The Food Fest featured five specialty food marquees and 13 different types of food in the hotel’s waterfront beer
garden. Musician Craig Somers provided entertainment while a jumping castle, juggling performer and lolly table were popular with children. The Creekside Food Fest builds on the town’s Y-Fest, which started 15 years ago and is now one of the Wimmera’s biggest Easter events. Sally Gerbert said she and Kevin were happy to end to the week with a relaxing day out that also showcased ‘a terrific vibrant community.’ “Anyone who knows Kevin and I know that we don’t do things by halves. Once we started talking about having a food festival to launch our new name, we didn’t hold back. And we can’t wait to host another one,” she said. “Our vision since buying the hotel was to create a premier dining and entertainment ven-

Building on strengths

he Nationals candidate for the Federal seat of Mallee Andrew Broad was spot on when he said that Australia had to ‘play to its strengths’ to rejuvenate manufacturing in the country. Mr Broad, in a frank interview with The Weekly Advertiser, said in response to a question about the demise of Ford in Geelong, that opportunities remained, not only in Australia, but Victoria and the Mallee electorate. Mr Broad, a board member
of Australian Made, Australian Grown, agreed the loss of Ford car-making in Victoria was a disaster. But he said people had to look beyond the disappointment and consider a different direction. “At the end of the day we have to play to our strengths and to understand that we can’t compete on a wage base with Asia,” he said. “But, we are very good at so many other areas of manufacturing. We have an enormous amount of creativity and expertise that we’re already seeing in everything from furniture and high-grade piping to the wing tips of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. There
is a lot of opportunity if we get it right.” Identifying international need and responding with products that require specialist knowhow without the burden of heavy labour requirements seems an obvious direction for the future of Australian manufacturing.
Small players It might be that the relatively small player on the Australian manufacturing landscape, depending on a vast range of circumstances, might ultimately cut a path through what seems an impregnable world of competition. These small players, some of which help form the back-
bones of some of our rural centres, need governments to make it as easy as possible for them to be productive and competitive. This means developing affordable service accessibility and exploring ways to remove any barriers. Mr Broad was right when he also said one of the keys in exploiting Australia’s manufacturing potential was reducing the cost and complications of doing business in Australia. If we are smart enough to come up with products that can meet a demand here and overseas then surely we can be smart enough to create an economic environment that allows it to happen.

They argue that the council has ‘slugged its farming ratepayers’ with a $654,400 rate hike, despite signing off on half the increase in a Draft Rating Strategy. “It was bad enough when we found out the rating strategy was going to shift $316,700 of the rates burden off residential ratepayers onto farmers,” Victorian Farmers Federation member David Hucker said. “But now we’ve discovered council officers have drafted a budget that more than doubles the burden to $654,400.” The Ararat council released an official statement last week outlining why the draft 2013 strategy proposed to increase the farm rate from 52.5 percent of the general rate to 60 percent. Mayor Cr Ian Wilson said the proposed change would result in a redistribution of the rate burden with the general sector responsible for 51 percent of the rate burden, down from 54 percent, and the farming sector paying 40 percent, up from 37 percent. He said it was important to consider for issue from an historical context. “In 1995 farmers were carrying 46 percent of the rate burden, due to strong increases in farm land valuations. In order
to address this, the council made changes to the farm differential over a number of years, which brought this down to a more reasonable level,” he said.
“Of more recent times farm valuations have dropped, leading to a situation where in 2012-13 farmers were only carrying 37 percent of the rate burden, and the current proposal is to move this back to 40 percent. “This is not unreasonable, or unfair, it is the council merely adjusting the differentials to achieve the best outcomes for the whole of the community, having regard to the long-term and cumulative effects. This is what the council is required to do under the Local Government Act 1989.”
Shift Cr Wilson said under the proposed strategy, the average farm assessment would pay $374 more and the average residential assessment $14 more in 2013-14 as part of an overall seven percent rate rise. But Mr Hucker said page 56 of the draft budget showed the council wanted to lift the rates burden on the shire’s 500 farming families running 1733 rural properties from $4,089,300 to $4,743,700. “That’s a $1300 increase in just one year, raising their rates burden on the average farming family to $9487. How the hell is that fair?” Mr Hucker said. “Are our councillors aware they signed off on the draft rating strategy that shifted

But she added that the guidelines ‘recognised the important role of agriculture’ and that ‘councils should give consideration to providing reduced differential rates for farming land’. “Under the Local Government Act 1989, councils are obligated to publish their draft budgets and seek community feedback through a statutory 28-day public consultation process,” she said. “I encourage Ararat Rural City farmers and ratepayers to consider the draft budget, talk to their councillors and to make submissions to the council during the public consultation period.” People can provide written comments on the strategy before 5.15pm, Friday week. They can also support their submission with an address to the council at a special meeting at Ararat municipal offices at 4pm on June 13. The VFF also has is a petition calling for a Parliamentary Inquiry into rural rating. The petition is on the VFF website.

Book mixes river, art and culture

orsham mayor Cr David Grimble will launch a new book on Sunday that links art, culture and nature to tell stories about the Wimmera River.
The riverside launch of Yanga Track…Wanjab, Gadjin and Murnong will be at Sawyer Park as part of the Art Is… of the Land Festival at noon on Sunday. The coffee-table book is a joint project of Horsham Rural City Council, Wimmera Catchment Management Authority and Barengi Gadjin Land Council. The book, written by Melissa Pouliot and designed by Jackie Peacock, features artwork by Wotjobaluk Elder Aunty Nancy Harrison and Aboriginal artist Louie Rigney. Author Melissa Pouliot said it was the first Wimmera publication that told the story of the river from several perspectives through a combination of art, Aboriginal culture and a plant guide.
A barbecue lunch and stencilling workshop using Aunty Nancy Harrison’s artwork from the book will follow the launch. Mayor Cr David Grimble said many people contributed to what he described as a unique and special publication.
“This book is inspired by the story of the native plants which were the medicine chest, hardware store and supermarket of the Aboriginal people,” she said.
“The end result is something the whole Wimmera community, Horsham Rural City Council, the CMA and the Barengi Gadjin Land Council can be really proud of,” Cr Grimble said.

Public invited to join WOW kids Members of the public will have an opportunity to get involved in a Horsham community arts project involving young people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Writing on Walls Project organisers will use Art Is.. Festival week to invite the public to join its team in creating chalk creations on a carpark wall at Horsham Mibus Centre. The session, from 3.45pm to 5.30pm next Thursday, will incorporate the project theme of ‘a sense of belonging’. The project, commissioned by Horsham Rural City Council and School Focused Youth Services through Wimmera Uniting Care, has involved weekly school ‘club’ art and
writing workshops. A group of young people aged between nine and 19 has been busy working on poetry and a colourful wall design with Wimmera artist Mars Drum in Army Lane between Thipatiys café and Horsham Disposals. About half of the participants have lived in refugee camps oversees and their chalk work reflects connections based on ‘where they come from, where they are now and where they are going’. The project also includes selections of poetry, which will be used in plaques on seats and walls in Horsham shopping precinct. A project launch will be in Army lane on Saturday in mid June.

The State Government will provide $25,500 for a project to promote business opportunities in Nhill. State Government Minister Hugh Delahunty visited the west Wimmera centre to announce funding for the Nhill Alive with Business Opportunity project. Business Nhill, Nhill Town Committee and Hindmarsh Shire Council have joined forces to develop the marketing project aimed an encouraging people to establish or buy a business in Nhill. A Nhill Open Weekend on October 12 and
13, when the town will host visitors, will play a major part in the project.
Mr Delahunty said it was ideal timing for the launch, which follows a Regional Living Expo in Melbourne. “The pressures of living in Melbourne are enormous, especially if you run a business. We need to show those people how great life can be out here,” Mr Delahunty said. “Nhill has an unprecedented opportunity to become a town of thriving business precincts and attractive streetscapes, with a strong economy that supports job creation.

desire to move back home to the country has led to professional photographer Thea Pettras to open a new business in Horsham.
“No one wants to wait for the photographs any more so the aim is to get a professional product back to clients as quickly as possible,” she said. Ms Pettras established her business about two months ago after completing a Certificate in Small Business Management through the State Government’s New Enterprise Incentive Scheme.

Science roadshow visits schools A Victoria University travelling science laboratory will visit schools in Horsham and Stawell next week as part of a tour to encourage budding scientists in regional Victoria. The VU Science Roadshow, from the university’s College of Engineering Science, will be at Birchip P-12 College on Monday before visiting St Brigid’s College in Horsham on Tuesday, and Stawell Secondary College next Wednesday. Horsham and Ararat’s Marian colleges are also involved in the visit. The roadshow allows Victorian Certificate of Education students to explore their curiosity in science
and put theory into practice using analytical instruments in a VCE Chemistry Practicals Program.
“Unfortunately the cost of instruments means that these are not affordable by schools,” he said.
The mobile laboratory contains state-of-the-art scientific equipment including a liquid chromatograph for separating and analysing mixtures; and an ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer to analyse samples with light absorption.
In the VCE Chemistry Practicals Program students and their teachers will be able to put theory into practice with experiments including the analysis of aspirin in medications, caffeine in energy drinks and sugars in honey.
Victoria University’s Dr Domenico Caridi said instrumental chemical analysis was an important part of VCE chemistry curriculum and access to analytical instruments helped schools merge theoretical principles with hands-on experience.

Glenorchy party a ‘big night out’
P
reparations are in full swing for a major party in the south-east Wimmera township of Glenorchy on Saturday night.
Glenorchy residents will celebrate the reopening of their newly refurbished and extended public hall with the Big Night Out. Floodwater in 2011 severely damaged the hall and restoration work in the past 18 months has included a new floor, new supper room indoor toilets and access ramps for people with disabilities. The project also included raising the hall floor by 300 millimetres to make the building more resilient against future floods. Northern Grampians Shire’s Cr Kevin Erwin said the free-of-charge Big Night Out was sure to be a ‘great night with live music, children’s entertainment and a roast dinner on offer.’ Cr Erwin said Western Victoria MLC David O’Brien would help officially open the newlook hall. “The Glenorchy community should be really pleased with the result of the work that’s been done as they have, in essence, received a brandnew facility,” he said. “We hope to see many happy Glenorchy faces at the Big Night Out because this event is not only for them to celebrate the hall’s reopening, but also to mark their come-back from the devastating floods of two years ago.”
Glenorchy’s Big Night Out will feature performers including big-band outfit Swingside, country and western musician Cameron Mason, contemporary guitar duo Parso and Dave, and 1970s-1990s rock cover band NoXquses Jamie and Kim’s Mobile Zoo and other activities from 4pm will help entertain the children, and the Giant Koala from Dadswells Bridge will cater with a roast dinner at 6pm. Live music will start at 8pm.

Flood damage Flooding occurred at Glenorchy during September 2010 and the State Government responded by providing a grant of $189,975 from its Flood Recovery Community Infrastructure Fund to build a new supper room and indoor toilets at the hall. But Wimmera River floodwater again hit the settlement in January 2011, inundating much of the township and causing damage to infrastructure such as drains and roads as well as almost 100 properties. The Northern Grampians council has repaired the latest damage to the hall with a grant of about $245,000 from Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements. Big Night Out organisers have asked people to bring a plate of food to share for supper and RSVP for dinner with Dianne Stewart on 5358 0500. People simply attending the event don’t need to RSVP.

Matthews has been a quilt maker for more than 25 years. elopea Downs trainer Darryl Dodson and Texan Warney added another chapter to an amazing career last Sunday, winning the Karingal Haulage Casterton Cup over 2000 metres.
Ridden by his regular jockey Holly McKechnie the chestnut gelding was considered an outside chance for the feature event after a moderate showing in the Mt Gambier Cup a fortnight earlier.
Texan Warney showed acceleration that would rival a Ferrari in the last 200 metres shooting clear of his rivals to score by two lengths. This latest victory was career number 13 boosting his stake earnings to $335,000. If Texan Warney can hold his good form, a tilt at a fourth successive Miller Contractors and Plant Hire Horsham Cup this coming October wouldn’t be out of the question.

Local bagmen rated Texan Warney a 15-1 chance because he wasn’t in the sparkling form that saw him capture a third successive Horsham Cup last spring.

Koe was given a charmed run throughout by Neilson, who kept a cool head despite being momentarily caught up in traffic just before the home turn. Neilson seized his opportunity when a gap appeared shortly after balancing up for the run to the judge. The victory saw the daughter of Golden Slipper runner up Align’s stake earnings rocket to almost $80,000. On the strength of this latest performance a future trip back to Adelaide to contest a similar race wouldn’t surprise.

Selina slips second-season blues Horsham runner Selina Heard-Price has overcome her ‘second season blues’ with Stawell Amateur Athletic Club. She has bounced back in her third year with an overdue win in an eight-kilometre Tylers Hardware Handicap at Rupanyup last Saturday. Selina and her partner Rick Price enjoyed a stunning rookie season with the club in 2011 winning four of the 19 races, but it was a barren back-up year, Selina finishing near the tail and placed just once in 15 races and Rick suffering a calf injury which put him out of contention for most of 2012. As if in sympathy with her husband, Heard-Price went from unstoppable to stopped in just one season but the wiry
couple have revved up their training again and have been rewarded with a win each and perhaps more to follow later in the year. An invigorated Selina now leads the club aggregate by a sizeable margin and is also top of the table in the teams title. “I ran second here to Tim Harris in 2011, but I really didn’t feel up to it this morning,” the winner said. “I woke up feeling a bit flat and went to the start the same way, but it’s amazing how your competitive juices kick in once you know you are in a race.” With typical grit, HeardPrice slowly wore down the tearaway leader Rhonda Clark who, chasing rare back-toback wins after surprising in the Horsham Telstra Shop race

he Kalkee juggernaut should continue on its winning way in Horsham District Football League this week by accounting for unpredictable NoradjuhaQuantong.
Big game The easterly edge of the league will see one of the matches of the season play out as the Rupanyup Panthers welcome the Stawell Baggies to the wide open expanses of the Rupanyup ground.
The Kees boast too much depth for the Bombers and with the addition of Aaron Barnett last game the Kalkee side now have a much-needed genuine crumbing forward.
Both sides will be desperate to have the four points come five o’clock Saturday. For the Panthers it keeps them in the hunt for finals action while a win for the Baggies can give them breathing space inside the five.
Both sides boast potent forward lines. Josh Beddison has taken all the accolades for the Kees up forward so far this year but wily veteran Adam Carter is averaging more than five goals a game.
The key for a Panthers win is getting some of their lesser lights to step up and take pressure off the likes of Nathan Sasche, Glenn Wyatt and the Tyler brothers.
At the other end Jordan Huff is kicking his four or more a game while Shane Oakley and Adam Hall are averaging more than three a week so this game might end in a shootout.
Swifts are building momentum based around interleague representatives Owen Phillips, Scott Carey and Sean Mantell. The trio has the ability to run and break lines and should enjoy the space on the wide wings at Rupanyup.
The big question is can the Bombers get enough supply? Noradjuha-Quantong’s midfield, led by veteran Brent McIntyre will need to win a lot of the contested football to limit Simon Hobbs, Steve Schultz and Paul Christian. The Kalkee defence led by interleague joint coach Josh Mibus and Ben Lawson looks bigger and stronger than the Bombers and will ensure the Kees notch their seventh win in a row. Natimuk, land of the big goal posts, hosts an intriguing clash between Natimuk and Edenhope-Apsley. Natimuk has to be considered a genuine finals chance after its win a

If Matt Tyler can get on to top and dominate the air the Panthers will be a chance but I’m not sure if they have enough artillery to stop the speed of the Baggies. As they leave Rupanyup on Saturday night, Swifts should be breathing a lot easier, having put space between them and the chasing pack.
Bounce back After two weeks of having to put up with the bitter taste of defeat the Laharum side will bounce back hard against the young Pimpinio side.
With Shannon Argall in sensational form, the Tigers won’t have any answer to him dominating the air and giving his smaller players first use of the ball. Dylan Baker is providing a focal point up forward for the Tigers but the question will be whether he gets enough supply to put Laharum under pressure on the scoreboard. Brett Ervin and if available Keegan Mason will lead a stingy Laharum backline and with the speed of Sam Winfield, Robbie Miller and Tom Inverarity the Tigers will have to work hard to maintain possession. Down south Harrow-Balmoral hosts bottom-of-the-ladder Taylors Lake and the Roos will go into the game with a take-no-prisoners attitude as they chase percentage and make a charge towards fifth position. Brent Penny and Michael Phelan loom large up forward for HarrowBalmoral and with Josh Vickery giving first use of the ball to his on ballers in Dalton Burns, Tim Cogger and Will Plush the Taylors Lake defence will be working overtime again. Jason Weir, Dean Harberger, Luke Robertson and Craig Britten will keep battling to but it’s hard to mount a case for the Lakers to cause an upset.

With the Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend coming up teams in Mininera District Football League will be keen to give all they can to go into the break with the momentum of a win. In round seven this weekend GlenthompsonDunkeld will travel to Moyston to take on the Pumas. Moyston-Willaura has dropped only the one game this year, at the hands of the undefeated Wickliffe-Lake Bolac. GlenthompsonDunkeld, which had a stellar start to the season, won its first five games of the season and has since lost two on the trot. Glenthompson-Dunkeld’s most recent loss
was at the hands of undefeated Wickliffe-Lake Bolac. Glenthompson-Dunkeld put up a solid fight, going into half time leading by a point, however a four-goal-to-one third quarter set up victory for the Magpies. Lachlan Fisher, Sam White and Tom Blackford were among the Rams’ best and they will be looking to fire again this weekend and will possibly look for someone to be dominant in front of goals with last week producing only one multiple goal scorer. Moyston-Willaura however will be setting itself to continue on its winning ways, last week having a 32-point victory over LismoreDerrinallum. Nicholas Corbett was instrumental in front of goals, kicking four, with John Vanderwaal and Daniel Guinane also contributing with three apiece. Had Moyston-Willaura been a bit more accurate in front of goal the score line could
have been a lot more devastating. The outfit kicked 18 behinds.
With their dominance in front of goal, along with Jacob Johnson, Jackson Seres and Rhys Cronin all playing well, the Pumas will be set for another victory. Another important game for the round is when Tatyoon takes on Lismore-Derrinallum. Tatyoon is turning its season around, having won its last three games in a row. Its most recent victory was a close shave against Great Western. Last year’s leading goal-kicker Aidan Bell is finding some form and beginning to bag a few goals, kicking four last week. He along with Andrew Maconachie, Tyler Cronin and Joel Fitzpatrick will hope to once again string together another win and go into the break four and four.
Lismore-Derrinallum’s last three games included a draw and two losses to the competition’s top three teams. It will be looking for a much-needed win to keep itself in touch with the top five. A victory could possibly see it move up to sixth, whereas a loss could send it slipping back to 10th. Simon Stewart has been instrumental for the Demons, kicking three goals last week for a total of nine in the last two rounds. He will be looking for plenty of supply from Scott Henderson and Coby Dudman to get over the line. Other games completing the round include Hawkesdale-Macarthur taking on Great Western, Penshurst playing Woorndoo-Mortlake and Wickliffe-Lake Bolac looking to continue its undefeated run against Caramut. SMW Rovers, starting to string together some good victories, will be looking to add to their winning talley when they host Ararat Eagles.

orsham RSL Diggers will face a tough assignment against a potent Dimboola outfit in Wimmera Football League this weekend as the team continues to search for an elusive win.
But if the Diggers have any chance of beating the Roos this season it might well be in the marquee match of the league’s Indigenous recognition round at Dimboola. The Diggers, competition strugglers for a few seasons, have been highly competitive this year but results suggest they might have simply forgotten how to win. Narrow losses to Nhill and Ararat are sure to have chewed into the self-belief of the group, which now confronts one of the favourites for the flag. The Indigenous recognition match at Dimboola on Saturday looms as a season-defining moment for the club as it attempts to win the Wotjobaluk Shield. The Diggers are unlikely to cause an upset – Dimboola is simply too good – but the visitors can either back themselves and take it up to their fancied opponents or cop a hiding. The contest is the fourth Indigenous-recognition clash between the two clubs, which tapped into their cultural histories to develop the concept in 2010. All clubs in the league now embrace the day. Barnstorming Horsham Saints meanwhile, will overcome Nhill’s significant home-ground advantage at Davis Park to beat the Tigers. The Saints are perhaps the most balanced team in the competition at the moment with Phil Butsch and Garry Hallam in good nick after league commitments last week and Jacob Cooke-Harrison with plenty to prove on Saturday. But Nhill, although crashing and burning against Horsham at home, can be hard to beat at Davis Park. Simon Brearley and Ben Pollock are in good form for the Tigers and Matt Jones will make his Saints opponent work hard. But the Saints will be too strong. Keep an eye on a ruck battle in the middle, it should be a beauty.

allee Football League is flying high after its fourth consecutive VCFL Country Championships victory.
A 13-goal win over Central Murray means the Mallee moves up to 12th position on VCFL standings after previously hovering around the 20th mark. The league gets back into domestic competition this week though, with three big games that should produce some quality football. Sea Lake-Nandaly Tigers will look to use the homeground advantage when they come up against Ouyen United at Sea Lake.

The Tigers sit in second position while the Demons have managed to work their way to fourth.
Jeparit-Rainbow picked up its first win of the season in their last match and will look to carry on that form.
Ouyen United has improved as the season has progressed and is a much better team now than when these two sides last met and the Tigers won by 50 points.
The Lakers have put it together for quarters this season but has been unable to produce a four-quarter performance.
Colin Durie again leads the way for the Tigers in the middle, with Darcy Ryan and Tom Summerhayes helping out to provide extra class.
Simon Clugston has been in terrific form for the Lakers all season and will have the hard task of containing the strong Walpeup-Underbool forward line, which can produce a wide range of goal kickers.

Luke Carr has played well and will give his Hopetoun charges a big chance of winning this match. Liam Price is another who has put his hand up all season, while young gun Zac Robins is proving to be invaluable in defence. Woomelang-Lascelles has a great list of players and will look to take advantage at the centre clearances, with VCFL medallist Trent Donnan and speedster Pierce Liddle controlling the game. Ford to kill Falcon badge as well F
ord’s iconic, six-decade old Falcon badge will die with the company’s Australian manufacturing operations in 2016.
“It’s my view that Falcon will retire, and Territory we are just beginning the dialogue around.”
It’s too early to speculate with any certainty on any potential future ‘Territory’ vehicle, but news that Ford’s well-regarded Australian design and engineering centre will stay in business well beyond 2016 could potentially point to some local involvement.
The news means that any potential new imported Ford sedan sold Down Under beyond 2016 will instead wear a global badge – in-line with the global One Ford strategy. However, Ford has not ruled out putting the Territory badge on a future imported SUV – potentially a variation of the global Explorer – when the current locally made version ceases. Launched here in 1960, the Falcon sedan – as well as its discontinued wagon and existing ute variations – has long been the heart of Ford’s local operations, and for many years dominated the local sales charts alongside its equally famous archrival, Holden’s Commodore. But as the market has fragmented, and as buyers have shifted from large sedans into small-cars and SUVs, the Falcon’s sales – and the large-car segment overall, have dwindled to just a fraction of their former numbers. At its peak in 1995, Ford sold around 81,000 Falcons in Australia, but last year this had dwindled to just over 14,000 – plus an extra 5733 utes. In that same time, total new vehicle sales in Australia have actually

Holden will keep producing Commodores here until at least 2022, although later this decade will replace the new VF with a different model based on a global architecture – possibly a front-drive one. But Ford Australia will not apply the Falcon badge to any imported car post-2016, even if it hasn’t exactly ruled out selling a global D segment large sedan here in the current FG Falcon’s place.
Ford Australia CEO Bob Graziano told GoAuto that the decision to close the plants – one, he added, that ‘was not taken lightly’ – would be the right time to retire Falcon. Mr Graziano spoke with us just hours after he had broken the news of the impending plant closures to Ford staff.
But Mr Graziano said the company was less set on its plans for the Territory badge. The Falcon-based SUV has won many plaudits since its introduction in 2004, and unlike its Falcon sibling, has continued to sell in strong numbers of late – a sign of the shift to SUVs across the market.
“I honestly believe it is so closely linked to Australia and to local production that the right thing for us is to retire the name with vehicle in October 2016,” he said.
“That’s one that we are working on, we potentially may continue to use the Territory name on another product, but we have not taken any decisions on that,” he said.
Large sedans While the Falcon is now officially on death row, Mr Graziano refuted suggestions that large sedans as a whole were going the way of the dodo. “I don’t think it’s a dead car walking,” he said. “I think there are still a number of customers out there, though a much smaller part of the industry, but there are individuals that truly want and value this type of vehicle, and they’re the ones we want to provide to over the next three years.” Mike Costello © GoAutoMedia, 2013

oyota has relegated German luxury car-maker BMW to second place in a list of the most valuable global automotive brands for 2013.

Australian utes down but not out G
M Holden has made a significant move in slashing prices and improving value across its Australian-built utility range with the forthcoming VF series in an attempt to stem the flow of sales towards imported models.
WORK FORCE: Holden will be hoping the new VF Ute can arrest a 24.5 percent sales decline this year, and turn around a longer-term move away from its Commodorebased light commercial to bigger imported utilities.
The substantial upgrade brought with the updated series should have a positive impact on the two-door ute, at least in the short term, but questions remain over the longer term future of the passenger-car-based light commercial – not just from Holden, but Ford as well.
And demand is the key here. As Ford, too, works on a significantly improved Falcon ute for release next year – and remains quiet
Holden and Ford have had mixed fortunes in recent years with the imported Colorado/Rodeo and Ranger/ Courier utilities, with the lion brand in particular still a long way from when it was selling around 25,000 a year in the mid-2000s. But with excellent new-generation models now in the market, model variants in place to satisfy demands from a wide range of customers and vehicle supplies flowing freely, both imported pick-ups from the Australian brands are now outselling their smaller locally built counterparts by a big margin.
While Holden has committed to building a new-generation Commodore on a global platform that will be different from the current Australiandeveloped ‘Zeta’ architecture, the company is still to divulge whether the new underpinnings will be suitable for a utility body style. It will likely have the option to continue building the current ute alongside the all-new sedan later this decade, providing it makes financial sense, which in turn hinges on demand in the marketplace – mainly in Australia but also in potential export destinations such as the US.

on the prospect of a fully redesigned version down the track – demand for both Australian utilities has continued to fall sharply this year in what has been a consistent decline for almost 10 years. Yet this does not represent a plunge in popularity of the utility per se. On the contrary, sales of imported
4x2 and 4x4 utes have grown in accordance with their increasing popularity with family and recreational buyers – in addition to the traditional trade/business base – and with ongoing improvements in refinement, quality, safety and, not least of all, value, thanks to favourable exchange rates and a free-trade agreement between Australian and Thailand.
What a traditional imported workhorse ute lacks in terms of engineering sophistication and driving dynamics – typically using a separate chassis construction and live rear axle suspension, for example – it clearly makes up for with its competitive pricing, cab options, extra space, off-road ability and SUV-like seating position, to name a few key factors,
To the end of April, Holden had this year sold 1808 Commodore-based utes compared to 4792 new registrations of Colorado, which is up substantially in both 4x2 and 4x4 guise this year compared to early 2012, when supplies were short due to lingering effects of the late-2011 Thai floods. Ford, meanwhile, has this year seen the 4x2 version of Ranger outsell the Falcon ute, with the Australian-engineered Thai model up 26.2 percent YTD on 1463 units and the Aussie ‘battler’ down 19.7 percent to 1408. Toyota’s teaser T
oyota has teased its sportier new Corolla sedan ahead of its official global unveiling on June 6.
NEW DIRECTION: Toyota promises a more exciting look for the new Corolla sedan as it moves away from the more conservative design of the current model.
Released on Toyota USA’s Facebook page, the teaser image shows the lower rear of the Corolla and appears to maintain a similar rear design to the Furia concept that was revealed at the Detroit motor show earlier this year. While the Corolla sedan may be inspired by the design of the sleek-looking Furia, it will most likely feature far less-radical styling than the concept. Toyota Australia public relations manager Mike Breen confirmed to GoAuto in February that the Furia concept was indicative of the production sedan that is likely to go on sale locally in the first quarter of next year. Spy photos of a production vehicle with Corolla badges that hit the web in February revealed a similar angular front end to that of the Corolla hatch as well as the current

In April, Toyota unveiled the Yundong Shuangquing II small car concept at the Shanghai motor show that had a similar shape to the Furia and hinted at the new Corolla. An ‘S’ badge on the rear of the car hints at the more sporting nature of the nextgeneration of the small sedan, with Toyota already confirming a move away from the conservative styling of previous Corolla sedans. It is not yet known if Toyota
will follow the same variant line-up as the current model that includes the base Ascent, Ascent Sport, Conquest and top-spec Ultima. Mitsubishi swaps Mirage for Attrage Mitsubishi has confirmed the long-rumoured Mirage sedan will go into production, but when it launches in Thailand mid-year it will have a new name – the Attrage. Mitsubishi will produce the Attrage, a combination of the words attractive and Mirage, at its Laem Chabang plant in Thailand alongside the Mirage hatch that went on sale in Australia in January. The tiny Mirage-based sedan will go on sale in Thailand before any other global market, with a likely Austral-
ian berth in early 2014. It is unclear whether Mitsubishi Motors Australia will keep the new name or if it will revert to the Mirage nameplate when it launches locally. Powering the Attrage is the same 1.2-litre MIVEC engine as found in the Mirage with a choice of five-speed manual gearbox or CVT and fuel use in the range of 4.5 litres per 100 kilometres. Based on the G4 sedan concept revealed at the Shanghai motor show last month, the Attrage is clearly linked to the Mirage in design, but features a redesigned nose with a larg-
er grille, bigger head-lights and restyled front bumper. Mitsubishi said in a statement that the Attrage features a class-leading turning circle of 4.8 metres and ‘sleek aerodynamics, with a dynamic character line which kicks up towards the rear’. It won’t be the first time a car-maker changes the name of the sedan version of a popular hatch in the sub-compact class, with Honda naming its Jazz-based sedan the City and Nissan going with Almera for its Micra-based offering.

issan will help alliance partner Renault use excess manufacturing capacity in economically ravaged Europe by building the next-generation Micra light car in Flins, France, from 2016.
An estimated 82,000 Micras will be built at Flins each year, returning European sourcing of the model to the region after what will by then be a six-year hiatus.
