Demand for expertise creates opportunities
S
tudents graduating from Longerenong College near Horsham are in red-hot demand as Australia’s agricultural industry tries to cope with a shortfall of qualified professionals.
College development officer Donna Winfield revealed yesterday that latest figures showed there were about six jobs for every Longerenong graduate entering the workforce. “It’s probably not a great position for agriculture in general but it certainly provides enormous opportunities for our graduates and is providing great incentive for prospective college students,” she said. “The industry is crying out for people qualified in various fields ranging from agronomy to farm-management and the agri-business sector.” Mrs Winfield said agronomy was an obvious big-ticket qualification and college students had an opportunity to specialise in the field during their course.
Wednesday, July 31, 2013
“There has never been a better time to be providing professional services in agriculture,” she said.
istered Training Organisation, has about 120 students, including apprentices, going through courses this year.
“As well as an Advanced Diploma of Agriculture, covering agronomy, animal and business management, the college offers a Diploma of Agronomy so students can finish their course with a double diploma.”
It has the largest group staying on residence in 10 years and room for more.
Longerenong College was the first tertiary institution in Australia to offer the Diploma of Agronomy course.
Open day Mrs Winfield made her comments while preparing for a college open day on Sunday week. The college will use the occasion to provide prospective students with insight into course details, college life and various social and community opportunities on campus. The August 11 open day is from 10am to 3pm. The college, with WorkCo as its Reg-

Mrs Winfield: “We’re encouraging students to live on campus so they can get the whole college experience. We haven’t reached accommodation capacity so students coming on board next year have an opportunity to live on site.” Longerenong College has experienced considerable growth in the last seven years after a period of uncertainty. The growth reflects acknowledgement in agriculture of a need for qualified people at various industry levels.

Mrs Winfield said demand for agricultural expertise meant the future for Longerenong was bright. People keen to know about the open day and any other course information can call 5362 2279.

Fiction novel for Network to provide former journalist ‘food for thought’ www.theweeklyadvertiser.com.au

A
new fiction novel about a missing Australian teenager in the late 1980s explores the far-reaching and long-term impacts when someone goes missing.
based business, said writing fiction was a completely different experience to her day job.
“I have dabbled in fiction writing since I was young but my journalism and media career took over after my first newspaper job in the early 1990s. When I started my own business 13 years ago I just never seemed to find the time to write for myself.”
Former Wimmera journalist Melissa-Jane Pouliot has released her debut fiction novel ‘Write About Me’ as part of National Missing Persons Week. The novel is inspired by Melissa-Jane’s cousin Ursula Dianne Barwick who has been missing for 26 years. Melissa-Jane said this year’s theme for National Missing Persons Week ‘See the Signs Before they Disappear’ fitted perfectly into the themes of her novel. She said the National Missing Persons Coordination Centre 2013 campaign focussed on the link between mental health and missing people and her novel explored this link. Melissa-Jane said she drew on her own experiences when writing the novel, available in print and electronic format via Amazon. “At times it was quite an emotional experience because of what my family went through and continues to go through as a result of Ursula’s disappearance,” she said.
Melissa-Jane Pouliot
“But writing a fictional piece helped me remove my own family’s story from this story and gave me the freedom to write whatever came to mind.” Seeing Ursula on television program The 7pm Project, now The Project, when the Australian Federal Police launched new age-progression technology in 2010 started the idea to write about a missing person. “Seeing what Ursula could look like today was a sad reminder of the beautiful person our family lost so many years ago. Because it is such a close personal subject it took me a long time to start but once I decided to write a fictional piece it all fell into place.” Melissa-Jane, who writes prolifically as part of her media-
Impetus Melissa-Jane said moving to the Sapphire Coast from the Wimmera in 2009 provided the impetus to move into fiction writing. She started five different novels but couldn’t seem to find the time or inspiration to get past the first few chapters. “Work and family life always seemed to get in the way. Publishing two non-fiction novels in the past two years gave me the confidence from a logistical point of view that it could be done if I set my mind to it.” Melissa-Jane said she wrote most of her novel on her iPad at Merimbula’s Waterfront Café between meetings and family commitments. It took her less than a year to finish the first draft but another year to get it ready for publication.
Wimmera Farming Network will ask the question ‘what makes a farm sustainable?’ at its annual conference in Natimuk showgrounds next Wednesday.
Organisers are confident the conference will provide participants with valuable information and ‘food for thought’. Conference topics will range from grassroot facts about soil biology to the use of social media in farming. There will also be discussions on how pulses fit in to the farmbusiness equation and an interactive session on sustainability. Network president Michael Speirs said sustainability was a broad term and had many meanings across the agricultural industry. “We are hoping that the day will help participants look at where they and their business fit in the question of sustainability and what can be learned to embrace this concept,” he said. He said discussion points and speakers
Dr Pauline Mele from Department of Environment and Primary Industries will speak at the conference on soil biology. Pulse Australia southern region industry development manager Wayne Hawthorne will discuss where pulses fit into Wimmera farming systems and DEPI’s Pru Cook will discuss social media and its ability to sustain and engage food and fibre producers. “Ms Cook will provide insight into finding useful things online and social media’s differences to newspapers and other sources of information,” Mr Speirs said. Mr Speirs said Wimmera consultant Matthew Sparke was likely to encourage lively discussion in a question and answer session on what made farms sustainable. The cost to attend the conference is $20 for members and $50 for non members. The day includes lunch and morning teas. Patrons must book by next Monday on 0408 372 271 or email contact@wfn.org.au.

or many years we heard about the potential of tapping into guaranteed water from the Wimmera Mallee Pipeline to establish an inland regional aquaculture industry. The concept was based on adding value to the already obvious benefit of being able to do away with open channels and to pipe water to what represents about a third of Victoria. The idea seems to have failed to evolve from little more than a fanciful notion where people generally agreed in principal that yes, it had possibilities before gently placing it in the too-hard basket. More than a decade’s worth of drought didn’t help and the years of frustration and red tape that the likes of Patyah yabby farmer
With water at our fingertips and available for regional development such as mining, and many of our lakes restricted to supply and recreation need, it now makes sense to revisit aquaculture for our region. The idea of fish farms often comes up as part of conceptual regional development projects, the latest being super farms to power electronic data-storage centres. Why not? Where good-quality water is involved it makes sense to consider secondary ways of using a valuable resource.
Regional produce Often there is plenty of talk about the quality of Wimmera-Mallee produce. When some of us think of Wimmera food we think of lentils, cereals, wine and olives. But to some of us, who have grown up catching and eating fish and yab-
bies, they too rate highly on the list. Imagine what MasterChef contestant Amina Elshafei, who spoke glowingly about Wimmera produce at the weekend, would say if we threw in a few yabbies! We know that we can successfully breed freshwater fish for environmental and recreational use and there have been generations of trial and error with yabbies. Demand and guarantees of quality would dictate the success or failure of any large-scale venture. But considering what we buy at the supermarket now and with the right sort of government support it is hard to imagine it not working.
The agency is using an ‘elephant in the room’ metaphor to highlight that homelessness is a reality in the Wimmera even though the problem may not be obvious to most people. Child, Youth and Family Executive Manager Pauline Butler said Wimmera Uniting Care would have a static display at Horsham Plaza for the duration of Homeless Persons’ Week which started on Monday.
“Mali the elephant will be on display along with a couch which represents the most common form of homelessness in the Wimmera,” she said.
www.theweeklyadvertiser.com.au
“Former clients of Horizons made Mali and we thought this was a fantastic opportunity to get her out and about again for a good cause.
“We’ll also have some statistics and information on display which we encourage people to reflect on.”
Ms Butler said representatives from Wimmera Uniting Care’s housing and youth teams would also give presentations about homelessness at schools. Ms Butler said people could call 5362 4000 for more information about Wimmera Uniting Care’s emergency housing program and how they could help. She said if people were experiencing homelessness and needed help they could call 1800 825 955 toll free.
As consumers, we place enormous stress on our fresh and marine fisheries. If we can create a streamlined way of developing a product and market and sell it like we do our other produce everyone will be a winner.
YOUR SAY Fuel costs SIR,- Given the tumble of the value of the Australian dollar, we can expect for there to be a corresponding rise of cost with the fuel we use. As a society we can expect that there will be no flow-on costs to consumers from those who move freight around our country. Yes I’m getting in early before the transport companies and God knows who else will claim that their prices must rise sharply because of increases in fuel costs. May we say quite clearly to all those in business that to justify putting up costs owing to fuel cost rises is not on. You had your bite from our pockets when fuel costs rose sharply in 2008 to levels unseen, we the public have not as yet once heard how you have all dropped your prices because fuel costs went down since then. So fair go Aussie business people, no second bite at this cherry. Ray Marsh, Ararat
Calculated risk SIR,- Firstly, I declare that I have an association with Stuart Hobbs at Breuers. I chair a monthly REV business forum of business owners in Horsham of which Stuart is a member. I noticed an advertisement for Breuers Party Hire in The Weekly Advertiser which should be a lesson for all small to medium operators in the Wimmera . In an economy that has been tough for many regional business owners this new venture by Breuers shows that you must understand that doing tomorrow what you do today means you are going backwards. Breuers were faced with the might of Wesfarmers coming to town and placing a Bunnings store opposite them. Combined with the increase of internet sales for their traditional market they took a glass-half-full attitude to the business. They did not sit back and com-
plain as many do, they looked for how they could add value to their business by using existing resources and knowhow. They took a calculated risk, invested in equipment and expanded into equipment hire and party hire. They have sought government support, but backed their ability to survive in a challenging business environment. Innovation is a key for many small business owners when faced with the Big Box retailers. Now they are looking to take advantage of the internet. There are many great businesses in the Wimmera and this is just one of them which is being proactive and looking to a positive future. Family talk ‘important’ 8
www.theweeklyadvertiser.com.au
W
immera Health Care Group clinical educator Chris Dodson is urging people with medical conditions to talk to their families and loved ones about future treatment and care options. Mr Dodson said he wanted people to start thinking about whether they wanted to live as long as possible or if quality of life was also important. “It is obviously a delicate issue to bring up, but it is a really important issue as well,” Mr Dodson said. “Some people wouldn’t mind being in a nursing home, where for others being independent is the most important thing no matter what. “There can be a lot of decisions to be made when someone is ill and people should think about who they would want to make decisions about their treatment if they were too unwell to make them for themselves.” Mr Dodson said if a patient talked with their family about advanced care needs, it wasn’t the final word as people were free to change their minds. “The main reason for having the talk is that it lets your family or loved ones know what you would want if you were to unwell to make a decision about your health care,” he said.
Wednesday, July 31, 2013
“Also it is important to remember that it isn’t legally binding. It simply informs the hospital of what you would like. You or your loved ones are free to change your minds at any time. “Wimmera Health Care Group doesn’t have an official policy in regards to advanced care plans. What the conversation will do is make the family aware of what their loved one wants, so that when they are asked ‘what do you want us to do for your loved one?’ they at least have an idea.”
Questions Mr Dodson said important questions to have discussed include: • Do they want full resuscitation such as life-support, intubation, transfer to Melbourne • Active treatment such as the use of antibiotics, intravenous fluids and surgery • Palliative care such as pain relief and comfort. Mr Dodson said if people had an Advanced Care Plan, Wimmera Health Care Group was happy to place a copy in a medical file so that it will be available to loved ones and staff. “Remember, an Advanced Care Plan is only referred to when you are no longer able to communicate your wishes to hospital staff and your loved ones,” he said.
Program a winner for young and old A new Rural Northwest Health program is proving a winner for young and old.
Mrs Hewitt, also a RNH board member, said the children had been fascinated by the visits.
Residents living with dementia in the care of Rural Northwest Health’s awardwinning Wattle unit are experiencing a new lease on life through regular visits to Warracknabeal Memorial Kindergarten.
“The children have responded to the visits with such warmth and enthusiasm,” Mrs Hewitt said.
The program is having a double positive effect because the centre’s preschoolers are enjoying the experience as well.
“The experience has been invaluable to them because it has taught them about patience and empathy. “And because the ladies often talk to them about what things were like when they were young, it has also given the children a wonderful understanding of a different era and how things have changed over time.
Wattle residents Pat Waters, Margaret Young and Dot Brown have been making fortnightly visits to the kindergarten since late in the first term this year.
“One of the elements of learning for our children this year is about community and understanding how a community works so this has been a great contributor to that as well.
Evolved The program evolved from a discussion between Warracknabeal Kindergarten educator Glenda Hewitt, Wattle rehabilitative therapist Katie Ramsdale and Wattle manager Wendy Walters. Ms Ramsdale said she noticed how the residents living with dementia responded whenever young children visited the unit and that spawned the idea for the kindergarten trips. “Any time a youngster visits, it lights up everyone’s day,” Ms Ramsdale said. “It’s good for their well-being also because emotional memory, good or bad, is the strongest memory a person

living with dementia can have,” she said. “So taking the residents to the kindergarten seemed a logical step as long as it didn’t upset the children and it seems it’s had just the right effect. “The residents have loved every minute of it because the children have such a
warming influence.
“And it’s just wonderful to see the joy on the faces of both the children and the ladies from Wattle.” Ms Ramsdale said the children would visit Wattle in the near future.
“One of the residents keeps saying to me on every visit ‘I’m an old lady but when I come here I feel young again’, which is just beautiful.
“This has been such a successful project. It gives the residents something to look forward to and they tell their families all about it,” she said.
“It’s had a huge impact on them and all they talk about is when do they get back to the kinder.”
“It brightens up their whole week and they even remember some of the names of the kids which is really good.”

Private landholders in orchid survival move
Wednesday, July 31, 2013
partnership between private landowners and authorities reintroducing native orchids into the landscape is helping reduce the number of threatened species in the WimmeraMallee.
Wimmera Catchment Management Authority chief executive David Brennan said the arrangement to plant the rare orchids on private property was taking the project to ‘a new level’. The Wimmera Orchid Conservation Project, involving a research laboratory in Horsham, has the potential to save orchid species around the world from extinction. After years of departmental research last year project manager Dr Noushka Reiter discovered a way to grow large numbers of orchids symbiotically with their mycorrhizal partners. The lab, managed by Wimmera CMA, is growing 30 different endangered species for projects in Victoria, SA and NSW. Since the breakthrough, Dr Reiter and volunteers have re-
“Orchids on private land have an added layer of protection to what we plant on public land because they are on Trust for Nature covenants where landowners place strong values on preserving the natural environment,” he said.

introduced about 2000 endangered orchids on public land in the Wimmera, Mallee and Western District. This week landowners, volunteers from the Australian Native Orchid Society, Friends of the Grampians and Friends of the Little Desert and Dr Reiter are planting Yellow-lipped and Candy Spider-orchids on private properties. Mr Brennan said the private property introductions marked a major step forward as part of a Wimmera Regional Catchment Strategy objective to reduce the number of threatened
species in the region. “A lot of the threatened species that occur in the Wimmera are on private land and much of this private land is extremely well managed,” he said. “As such, it makes good sense to plant orchids on private land as well as on the public estate to diversify where the orchids appear in the landscape.” Mr Brennan said the carefully selected planting areas were on Trust for Nature-covenanted land where the orchids had historically occurred.
“Native orchids are quite difficult to grow so having the support of landowners to give them constant attention means they have an even better chance to thrive and survive.”
Excited Murtoa district wheat and sheep farmer Steve Rabl said he was ‘very excited’ about having Yellow-lipped Sun Orchids planted on his property.

He said it meant even more because of the values his father Leo instilled into his family. “My dad has passed away now but he was ahead of his time and taught all us kids to look after the bush,” he said. “Dad was a great believer in natural regeneration which is why we’ve placed a Trust for Nature covenant on all the bush on our farm. He would be very proud that we are doing this.”

ing problems for organs such as the heart or kidneys. Once dental disease reaches advanced stages, it can require intensive treatment.
Vets may recommend ultrasonic scaling to remove thickly built up tartar, and extraction of diseased teeth. These procedures require a general anaesthetic and a day in hospital.
Prevention
A
ugust is Pet Dental Health Month in Australia. Dental disease is one of the most common disease affecting dogs and cats, with the vast majority of older pets having dental problems to some degree.
It’s not surprising, really – as humans we brush and floss our teeth daily and see our dentist twice a year and yet we can still get gingivitis, tooth decay, plaque and other problems. Most pets have no routine dental care at all, so it’s no wonder that their teeth can quickly reach a bad state. Many of the early signs of dental disease in our pets can be quite subtle, and easily missed. As a consequence, dental disease can be very advanced before it is detected, unless the pet is having a regular dental check-up as part of their annual routine. Probably the first obvious symptom that pet owners will detect is bad breath. Other early signs include discolouration of teeth and build-up of plaque and tartar, or gingivitis – red, inflamed gums. As dental disease progresses there can be gum recession, mouth ulcers, erosion of the bone around the teeth, loss of teeth, and tooth root abscesses. By the time it gets to these latter stages, the animal may be in a lot of discomfort, which can show up as difficulty chewing, loss of appetite, drooling or general unhappiness. In addition, bacteria from diseased or infected teeth can spread through the bloodstream, caus-
Better by far is the prevention of dental disease for our pets, just as we do for ourselves. Some ways to do this include: • Daily brushing of teeth – many pets will tolerate this very well, especially if done from an early age. Be sure to use a pet safe toothpaste, not a human variety. • There are many dry foods that are available for dogs and cats that promote dental health by cleaning the teeth as the animal chews • Dental specific chews, available from pet stores, vets or supermarkets • Chewing bones can also help – even many cats will chew chicken wings. No animal should ever be given cooked bones • Other products which can be added to water or food, which have anti-bacterial properties or contain enzymes that help remove plaque from teeth. These are available from vet clinics. In general, we recommend doing one thing every day from the above list to prevent dental disease – usually a combination of strategies will suit most pets and owners. Many vet clinics offer free dental health checks at this time of year. Vet nurses are also a great source of information about dental health. If your pet hasn’t had their teeth checked in the last six months, take advantage of this time to do something positive about your furry friend’s dental health during August. • Dr Vogt is senior veterinarian at Animal Aid in Melbourne. manuscript tracing the journey of a man who grew up in Ararat in the early 1900s before a life of adventure has become a book now attracting rave reviews.
“He takes you with him to these places as if it was happening today. I knew straight away this was something special”
Melbourne-based publisher Transit Lounge will release Hard Times, a true story written by the late Jack Mercer, tomorrow for national distribution. Mercer, born in Archdale in 1896, died in 1976 and left a one-off manuscript only discovered by his grandson Brett Pierce earlier this year.
Brett Pierce, Jack Mercer’s grandson
Mr Pierce said he had been immediately struck by the ‘vividness and immediacy’ of the writing.
Mercer’s Ararat experiences set him on the path as a runaway to all corners of the world. He eventually flees to Werribee where he works as a farmhand, before travelling to Sydney and working on a Norwegian barque that becomes shipwrecked in South America. After travelling through Chile, Patagonia and Buenos Aires he ends up working as an elevator boy in New York City and

“He used to tell us stories about his travels. So I knew the book existed. He had read it to me when I was young and I remembered it being an amazing tale. That’s why I went searching for it,” he said.
“He takes you with him to these places as if it was happening today. I knew straight away this was something special,” he said. Mercer’s story begins in 1911 with him as a 14-year-old growing up in an Ararat pub where he faces the terror of a stepfather and a mother who barely acknowledge his existence. The work vividly describes life in early Ararat.

riding trains as a tramp in Virginia. Publishers have described Hard Times as ‘one of the heretofore unplucked gems of Australian literature’ and said critics were comparing it to Albert Facey’s A Fortunate Life. Mr Pierce, who discovered the manuscript in ‘an old box’ is himself a world traveller in his work with World Vision and acknowledges his grandfather’s influence.
“He went from experiencing a shipwreck in his teens to flying and crashing planes in the First World War within five years.”
Crashes Mercer fought in the First World War in the Canadian branch of the Royal Flying Corps, surviving two crashes. After the war he worked in a variety of roles in Canada, USA and Latin America before his appointment as manager of British American Bye-Products in Australia in 1934. He lived his working years in Prahran and retired to McCrae in Victoria. He remained an occasional world traveller for most of his life.

Do you expect too much of yourself?
I
s farming really different from any other business?
In any commercial venture, strategic planning to help you ride out the rough times is essential. Remove the emotion of land-ownership and the family traditions that accompany farming and you’re left with a business that experiences good times and bad, profitable years and years of loss. And as with any other business, running a farm is expected to be profitable. Unlike other businesses, if your farm isn’t profitable, it’s not that easy to shut up shop and turn off the lights on your way out. The business of farming is often difficult to view in such impersonal terms. After all, working the land tends to ‘run in the family’. It’s a legacy passed from generation to generation. But it is a business nonetheless. It exists to supply a commercial demand while producing an income for the people who work on it. It puts food on the table, pays for the children’s education and funds retirement – just as you’d expect of any other business. Regardless of the nature of that business, successful operators plan ahead and surround themselves with skilled people. For example, you’re expert at raising
Although people who work the land tend to display a marked willingness to offer assistance to others, they rarely seek assistance for themselves. Many place unfair expectations on themselves by attempting to ‘go it alone’. The business of running a profitable farm involves specific issues and complexities but there’s no reason you should feel you’re alone when trying to get your head around topics like: • budgeting and cash flow; • tracking income and expenditure; and • managing taxation, wages and superannuation. A tailored plan is crucial to success A financial plan, tailored to the particular business of your property, can mean the difference between borrowing through the tough times and treading water in the good, or having reserve funds for the lean years and surplus for savings and business growth during the productive years. Timing is also key. Not planning early enough may mean that your business decisions are triggered by events over which you have no control. Planning early puts you in command and
increases your options. Financial advisers with an understanding of rural property management, can work with you to create such a strategy. Consider these points: • Budgeting harks back to the adage of living within your means. It might be handling household expenses or managing the costs of the property. Identifying needs from wants is paramount to keeping operational costs under control. • Many events that impede profitability are outside of your control which raises the question of contingency planning – what you can do now to prepare for these events. • Wealth creation sets up your future. A business with sustainable profitability, even in less lucrative years, will enable you to plan your life through each of its stages from raising a young family to retirement and beyond. These issues are the same as those faced by the lady running a cafe or the local plumber. The difference lies in the experience and background of the professionals they have behind them helping them to achieve their goals. • Robert Goudie is an authorised representative of Meritum Financial Group Pty Ltd AFSL 245569.

Tolerance for Baker Warren like a rabbit short course and the duo were the rank outsiders of the field.
H
orsham trainer Greg Baker made a return to the winner’s circle in fine style at Donald on Saturday training a winning double.
Baker had his charges Be Tolerant and Rusty Ruler engaged in 1600 and 1350 metre handicaps respectively. Be Tolerant was the first of the pair to step out, combining with AJC Derby winning hoop Rhys McLeod, and in a strong performance the daughter of Glenlogan Park resident stallion Show A Heart was given a peach of a ride by her Melbourne based hoop, stalking race favourite Something To Share around the home turn.
In a patient display the former Darren Weir apprentice settled the chestnut son of Churchill Downs toward the rear of the field for most of the event. Fry made his move round the home turn coming with a great display of speed in the home straight to finish over the top of his rivals emerging victorious by a length. The win was Rusty Ruler’s second in just four outings with a bright future ahead.
Ballantine’s finest Like the Baker stable, Longerenong trainer Majella Ballantine returned to the winner’s circle in style at Swan Hill on Monday with rising sevenyear-old gelding Dangarway. Ballantine had her galloper engaged in a 0-58 restricted rating 1600-metre handicap with jockey Ryan Maloney in the saddle.
It was then Rusty Ruler’s turn to strut his stuff having just his second start back after an injury enforced layoff.
Once the gates crashed back Dangarway flew out landing in a prominent position eventually settling on the speed behind race leader Take The Faith. After enjoying a charmed run at the hands of Maloney, the son of bread-and-butter stallion King Of Prussia was looming large as the thirteen sprinting neddys rounded the home turn.

down the iconic straight to stick his neck out on the post to score a tough much deserved win. The win was Dangarway’s fifth career victory and the first for Majella since taking over the training duties from Mornington trainer Kerry Edwards. Hopefully this fellow can take confidence from this win and go on with the job for his owners, the Horsham-based Taylor Family.
In brief Telopea Downs trainer Darryl Dodson also tasted success at the Donald meeting winning a 1200 metre maiden plate with Teberus for jockey Holly McKechnie. Jockeys Rhys McLeod, Kate Walters and Jake Bayliss all shared riding honours at the Donald meeting with winning doubles. Horsham jockey Dean Yendall took riding honours at Monday’s Swan Hill meeting also riding a double aboard El Galgo and Pink Zinc for trainers Darren Weir and Neil Walsh respectively.
Horse to follow Rusty Ruler – after his tough win on Saturday, he looks to have a future and more wins are on the horizon. • Josh Mackay delivers the late mail on thoroughbred racing each Saturday morning from 9am on 1089 3WM.
Reigning club champion Nathaniel Warren made giant strides towards winning a fourth title when he blitzed a field of determined chasers in the three kilometre Chris Blake Championship in the Stawell Ironbarks on Saturday.
The race was made to order for Warren, 25, who was having only his third start for the season and was fresher and faster than his clubmates, some who failed to handle the transition from long distance to a virtual sprint. Warren dashed over the distance in a sparkling 11.01 minutes to stretch space between himself, Matilda Iglesias and Tony Davey but was stunned afterwards to learn that he had won the club’s fastest race at his last three attempts – 2010, 12, 13. “I don’t like the race, I never feel comfortable in it and feel best when I’m able to settle into a longer distance,” Warren said. The local policeman says he hasn’t the time these days to train at the intensity of previous years, notably in 2009 when he had the speed and stamina to scorch over the undulating 3km in 9.48 minutes, but despite a limited preparation was only marginally down on the 10.52 he posted last year.
Nathaniel Warren
With two championship races remaining, Warren is now equal on points with Gary Howden who is currently overseas and may miss at least one of the two deciders. Alex Boan fought hard to score a narrow win over Liam Davey in the Sub-Junior version of the race, with Liam bravely backing up only minutes after also running with the seniors. Improving last start winner, Michael Coverdale, was third. Keith Lofthouse

Both teams possess attacking midfields and it might come down to which midfield can defend the best. Both sides have great options in attack with Beulah big man Dennis Redden coming off an impressive effort while Walpeup-Underbool key forward Wade Champion is also fresh after a 10-goal game. Unless he is required in the ruck, Kim Hallam will most likely get the job on Champion after keeping him relatively quiet in their previous two encounters. The Roos will need Chris Chubb to return from injury to play against Redden,

Both teams play fast-paced games that should provide fans of both sides with a terrific contest. The Blues will prove to be too strong though and will come away with a 20-point victory.
The skilful Tigers will have too much class for Hopetoun, which has found it hard to keep teams from kicking big scores. The Tigers will win by 40 points.
Fresh Tigers Sea Lake-Nandaly Tigers will look to produce a big victory when they come up against Hopetoun at Culgoa. The Tigers have had a great year so far and will be fresh after the bye last round. Hopetoun has had a tough season and will need big games from Cade Wellington, Deek Roberts and Kyle George through the midfield to give Luke Carr enough opportunities up forward to kick a winning score. Sea Lake-Nandaly Tigers will have too many match winners through the middle though with Colin Durie and Tom Summerhayes leading the way. Jeparit-Rainbow travels to Woomelang to battle Woomelang-Lascelles. The Cats will look to put a stranglehold on fourth place with a big win over the visiting Lakers. Jayden Lonergan will need another big game up forward for the Cats and has found good form, kicking seven goals against Ouyen United last week. The Lakers only managed five behinds after quarter time against Beulah last round and will find the going tough against a determined Cats side. Kane Bannam has been in great form for Woomelang-Lascelles in the midfield, while Heath Clugston is the only one holding the fort for the Lakers. The Cats will produce a great game that will see them win by 42 points.

Kees and Dees in top-two tussle HORSHAM DISTRICT FOOTBALL LEAGUE
T
By GRANT KUCHEL
he top two sides in Horsham District Football League will grace Cameron Reserve at Laharum this weekend in a contest where work in the middle and around the stoppages is likely to determine the outcome. Kalkee takes on Laharum in what is set to be physical contest as both sides attack the contest with great vigour. The two sides boast power forwards with Shannon Argall and Jason Przibilla headlining the Laharum forward line while Josh Beddison and Adam Carter lead the Kalkee arsenal. If either pair gets on a roll then their side will have a huge advantage in grabbing the points. One of the side interests in the game will be whether Argall can reach the ton this week. If he can kick the required five goals then Laharum might well be in the box seat to inflict Kalkee’s second loss of the year.
Shannon Argall
in the league and if he can get the ball on the chest of the likes of Schultz, Paul Christian and Tim Wade the Demons will be under early pressure. Laharum will look to wear Hobbs down by running Marcus Demaria, Ben Peucker and even Shannon Argall through the ruck to combat Hobbs and give the likes of Sam Winfield, Miller, Zac Price and Ben Mahon an armchair ride. Fans can expect a great game that will provide an honest indication about who can claim outright premiership favouritism.
The midfield battle is where it will happen and no player looms larger than Kalkee’s Steve Schultz. The brilliant onballer seems to go to another level when challenged and he will be critical to the outcome. Robbie Miller might play a close-checking role and try to make Schultz accountable by winning possessions of his own.
A massive game looms for finals aspirants Natimuk and NoradjuhaQuantong when they face off at Quantong.
Ruckman of both sides will have a huge influence on the contest. Kalkee’s Jake Hobbs is developing into one of the leading tap ruckman
There is no bigger game this season for the Bombers because a loss to Natimuk will officially sound the death knell on their season
Huge game
Natimuk seems to have run out of steam in the last few weeks and has found scoring goals a tough task and if Tim Friend and Mark Dorward can’t hit the scoreboard hard then Natimuk might struggle to post a winning score. Matt Ward, Brent McIntyre and Jarred Combe have come to the fore as the grounds have become heavier and the trio will again lead from the front for the Bombers. Jamie Elliott has been a revelation for Natimuk. Rarely outside the best, he is one player Bombers coach Adam Hall and his panel will need to put work into because if he gets loose he will hurt the home side. Shaun McDonald, Jono Lovel and Callum Cameron have been solid contributors for the Rams and I’m sure they would love nothing better than to beat their neighbours twice in one year. Noradjuha-Quantong has plenty of armaments up forward. Shane Oakley is the main contributor and with regular contributions from Sam Weddell, Adam Hall and the injury-prone Jordan Huff the Bombers have the capacity to kick winning scores. The Natimuk midfield led by Jon Hornsby, Dylan Wright and Ash Pekin will need to push back into defence hard to help their backline.
Five? Rupanyup could possibly jump back into the five this week by accounting for Pimpinio and by hoping the Bombers ‘do the right thing’. The Panthers boast too much class and strength in the middle of the ground for the Tigers. Glenn Wyatt, Nathan Sachse and David Lang
will make life pretty hard for the young Tigers led by Darcy and Todd O’Connor.
Even though the Panthers are missing big forward Matt Tyler, the likes of Brett Niewand, Scott Nicholson, Jackson Falls and Aaron Matthews should be able to get enough supply to make sure the Panthers stay in contention for finals action. Pimpinio will need young forwards Sam Turmine and Dylan Baker to take the game by the scruff of the neck when the ball enters the Tigers’ forward line but they will have to negate one of the inform backman in the competition in Paul Trotter. Trotter, ably assisted by Daniel Schaper and Paul Brooks, will make it tough for the Tiger forwards. Pimpinio ruckman Liam Jakobi will have a great battle with Nic Johnston. If the Tigers are going to cause an upset Jakobi will need to get first hands on the ball.
Boilover needed Harrow-Balmoral needs to pull off one of the upsets of the season and beat in-form Swifts to stay in finals contention. In the past the task would have been a lot easier because the Baggies weren’t the best of travellers. But in recent years Swifts have played good football at the home of the Roos. Brent Forsyth will be looking for his Harrow-Balmoral charges to play tempo football and maintain possession before hitting up forward targets in Mick Phelan, Tim Cogger and Brent Penny if he plays. Swifts on the other hand will look to play a fast-running game and use the speed of Scott Carey, Ash Cowen, Sean
Mantell and Jake Goodes to pump the ball long into Lachlan Hamilton and Jeremy Joiner. Dave and Josh Vickery will provide plenty of grunt around the stoppages for the Roos and they will need to fire if finals are still to be thought about after five o’clock this Saturday.
Game plan ‘Taylors Lake hosts Edenhope-Apsley and the visiting Saints will be looking to beat up on the Lakers and refine a game plan two weeks before finals. Taylors Lake relies on too few to do the work with Aaron Lewis, Dean Harberger, Tim Kelm and Jason Weir cracking in hard each week. Edenhope-Apsley’s Brent Christie, Luke Kensit and Dave McLeish will control the centre and ensure the likes of James Dixon, Will Smith and Matt Cranage have enough opportunities to kick a cricket score. Taylors Lake has improved in recent weeks but up against one of the league heavyweights will have to be at another level. Edenhope-Apsley’s defence led by Chris Oliver and the Kealy boys will repel the majority of the Lakers’ forward forays and go a step closer to making sure a top-three spot is safely locked away.

Eight still in race for Mininera’s final five spots MININERA DISTRICT FOOTBALL LEAGUE By JONATHAN BOX
Mininera and District Football League is set to heat up with five teams still fighting for the last two positions in the top five and only six points separating fourth and eighth position. There have been shock upsets during the past few weeks and all these five teams will be desperate to secure a win this week to keep their finals hopes alive. Two of the teams fighting for positions in the finals are HawkesdaleMacarthur, seventh on the ladder, and eighth-placed Lismore-Derrinallum. A loss from either of these teams will
determine their fate. Hawkesdale-Macarthur claimed the massive scalp of Moyston-Willaura last week to keep its finals hopes alive. Xavier McCartney, who continues to cause headaches for the league’s backmen, kicked six goals to give his team the edge. Danny Chatfield, who has also been dominant in front of goals, kicked three and was awarded best on ground for his efforts. Tall man Lachlan Reichman and midfielder Murray Habel were also among the Eagles’ best and will look to put in another game winning performance this week when they take on Lismore-Derrinallum. Lismore-Derrinallum, the quiet achiever this season, has flown under the radar to win crucial games to put itself into a strong position.
It stamped some authority on the competition last week in a 24-goal thrashing of Ararat Eagles. Ryan Elliot, Simon Stewart and Clinton Dudman did the damage in front of goals, kicking 19 between them. Corey Smith and veteran Scott Henderson also made an impact around the ground. Fourth-on-the-ladder Penshurst hosts sixth-placed SMW Rovers. SMW Rovers who had a terrible midseason five-game losing streak, have won their last two games and will look to continue their winning way this week. Their most recent victory was a hard-fought battle with Great Western to see them win by a narrow eight-point margin. Coach Rhys Cahir led his team to victory with five goals while Timothy Cleeland and Nicholas Byrne did
more than their fair share to secure the win. Penshurst, up and down all season, had a massive downer last week at the hands of Tatyoon. Penshurst, scoreless in the third quarter, was down from the start and never looked like getting close to the Hawks despite the efforts of Christopher Eales, three goals, Shaun Hayes and Billy McNeil. These players will look for a bit more support from their team-mates this week as they try to secure a finals berth with a win at home.
Hawks strong Tatyoon in fifth position has been going from strength to strength and will want to knock off second-placed Glenthompson-Dunkeld and really shake things up.

Brothers Sean and Timothy McDougall who are having an outstanding season have headed Tatyoon’s late charge. With the midfielders teaming with Mitchell and Tyler Cronin up forward this seems to be an unstoppable force taking the scalp of every team that comes their way. Glenthompson-Dunkeld, performing just as strongly, will hope to stop the Hawks’ rampage this week. Last week the Rams had a 42-point win over Caramut with Luke McDonald and Glen Darroch best on ground while Scott Day kicked four goals. Wickliffe-Lake Bolac should have no trouble when it plays Ararat. Woorndoo-Mortlake hosts Great Western and Moyston-Willaura will be out to secure a top-three spot and a second chance come finals time when they play Caramut.

ipsters should have it easy in picking the card in Wimmera Football League this weekend. Or will they?
Power sides Two games where only the bravest of punters would suggest an upset are at Ararat and Horsham City Oval.
Saturday’s round looms as one of those awkward weekends where top teams are playing the bottom group and results seem assured. We know for example that Horsham will travel down the highway to score a relatively easy win against Ararat. Minyip-Murtoa should be too good for Stawell, especially at Minyip and Dimboola will flex its muscles against Horsham RSL Diggers at Horsham City Oval. Horsham Saints should also be far too good for Nhill at Coughlin Park in Horsham. But anyone who has followed the game closely over the years will know that the last handful of games before finals represent potential danger for benchmark teams. History shows that some outfits predictably run out of puff and fall
Ararat beat Horsham RSL Diggers in Ararat last week but Horsham is a considerably different proposition. Nicks Maddison and Brain slipped onto best-player cards for the Rats last week and Jack Ganley with three goals and Jake Williamson and Aaron Searle impressed again. BANG ON TARGET: Horsham utility Tim Eldridge has found good form in recent weeks for his new club. Eldridge switched from Horsham RSL Diggers at the end of last season. Pictures: WILLAMY IMAGES
away badly after results extinguish the finals fire that has pushed them through a season. But it also reveals that some play with a new freedom that can invariably cause turmoil in the final make-up of the top five. The Horsham Saints clash with Nhill, to use an old card-game expression, should be a lay-down misère.
RUCK’S A FORTUNE: Melbourne-based ruckman Will Oakley, tackled by Demon Jeremy Hartigan, has been a valuable recruit for Nhill this season.
Considering Horsham smashed Nhill by 165 points last week it is unlikely anyone would provide odds for a Tigers upset this weekend. Yet, the Tigers, who sit just outside the five, have shown enough during the season to suggest they are capable of playing good football and the Saints would be ill-advised to take them lightly. It is important to note that Nhill has managed to notch up five wins this season and despite the heavy loss it was far from surprising that coach Simon Brearley identified plenty of positives from the game. There are few issues with Nhill’s endeavor and the Tigers’ ability to maintain intensity until the final siren has been well documented this season. But finding the goals enough times to worry quality opponents has been a problem. Last week players such as Jake Pilgrim, Zach Webb and Liam Albrecht stood up against the flow while Aaron Beer, Nathan Devanny and Adam Bound continued to lead the way. The Saints powered to victory over Stawell last week, securing the critical third spot on the ladder and finding the consistency coach Brendan Broadbent has been chasing in the process.
Broadbent’s team should sweep the Tigers aside, considering the strength of Phil Butsch, Bernie Ward and goal-kicking veteran Gavin Kelm. Alex McRae and ruckman Michael Rowe also impressed last week.
Third spot With third spot hanging precariously in the balance, Minyip-Murtoa faces a tough last few weeks and can’t afford to drop games it should win. The Burras are now sitting fourth by percentage and would have been kicking themselves after a narrow loss to Warrack Eagles. Stawell is a contemporary Burras rival and the Warriors often lift for games against their old foe. With Stawell’s youth comes unpredictability and there is little doubt the Warriors have some emerging talent.
But Horsham is all class and it is saying something when many rated youngster Billy Lloyd the Demons’ best player in a star-studded list last week. Ararat won’t be able to stop Dylan Parish from kicking another bag and will get an idea of how much John Wood has improved this season. Dimboola, meanwhile, will try to give Horsham RSL Diggers a footy lesson. The Roos were responsible for tripping the Diggers up earlier in the year, a result that influenced Horsham RSL fortunes for the rest of the year. The Diggers, with Damian Cameron, Kye Chapple and Justin Cozens carrying a heavy load as injured players watch from the sidelines, will be competitive early but ultimately run out of steam. The Diggers are the type of opponent that might provide an opportunity for the Roos’ mercurial Ash Clugston to run riot.
Jackson Dark is a ripper player, Tom Eckel and Zac Marrow have rarely missed featuring in best-player lists and Tom O’Neill and Jesse Hannett also won accolades last week. Minyip-Murtoa too has a wealth of good young talent. Kade Petering was among players leading the comeback last week. The Burras use a powerful defen-

National car count hits 17 million T
hink the roads are becoming increasingly crowded? You may be right, because Australia now has more than 17 million cars on its roads for the first time.
New South Wales remains the hotspot for vehicle registrations, with almost five million on its register. Victoria follows with almost 4.4 million, while Queensland showed the second-highest growth in the 2013 census data, pegging more than 3.6 million registrations.
The latest Australian Bureau of Statistics census data looking at the number of cars on our roads shows we have 17,180,596 registered vehicles, up from 16,741,644 just a year ago.
The highest growth in vehicle registrations was in the Northern Territory, which accounts for more than 148,000 vehicles.
There are now 750 cars per 1000 Australian residents, up from 723 back in 2008, the ABS says.
The age of vehicles on Australian roads has not changed. Despite booming new-car sales, the average age is still 10 years, the fourth year in a row that it has remained steady.
Toyota is the most popular brand, accounting for more than 2.6 million vehicles. Behind it is Holden, with more than two million vehicles, and Ford with almost 1.8 million.
Oldest fleet
More than 71,000 Daewoos still ply our roads despite the brand disappearing in 2004, while Daihatsu, which dropped off the Australian landscape in 2005, still has more than 69,000 vehicles on the road. Luxury brands BMW and Mercedes-Benz have almost 300,000 vehicles each registered in the census, while fellow German Audi has more than 100,000. Porsche has more than 24,000 cars in the database, while Range Rover has a healthy showing at just more
than 20,000. However, while you’d jump to the conclusion that most of the growth in the 2013 census data comes from the booming sales of passenger cars, the ABS data shows that over the past five years, the real growth markets have been light trucks, camper vans and motorcycles. Growth in motorcycles has grown so much over the last year that they have eaten into the number of passenger cars sold around Australia, where the overall number of car registra-
tions has declined. Western Australia and the Northern Territory were the only two state or territory to increase the proportion of passenger cars.
Prime movers only account for 0.5 percent of the vehicles on our roads, but the number of trucks that can carry up to 40 tonnes has fallen 15 percent.
This year, 501,020 Australian vehicles were using fuels other than petrol or diesel, compared with 13.2 million running on unleaded fuel and more than 2.9 million using diesel.
Two-wheeled transport made up 4.3 percent of sales for the 2013 financial year, while light commercial vehicles – the likes of the Ford Ranger and the Toyota HiLux – accounted for 15 percent of the national fleet.
This has been offset by a 22 percent jump in the number of trucks able to haul 60 to 100 tonnes, the data shows.
Interestingly, 320,748 passenger cars were accounted as still using leaded fuel, suggesting Australia’s fleet of old bangers is still substantial.
There are more big trucks on the road, with registrations of vehicles that can carry more than 20 tonnes growing by almost 20 percent over
Meanwhile, the number of trucks able to lug more than 100 tonnes has grown by more than 50 percent.

the past five years, the data shows – and they’re getting bigger.
Tasmania has the oldest car fleet on the road, averaging 12 years and growing older, while the Northern Territory has the youngest fleet, averaging 8.8 years.
BIG NUMBERS: Toyota is the most popular car brand on Australian roads, census data shows.

Fit for new Jazz H
onda has given the world its first glimpse of the crucial third-generation Jazz, as well as the vastly improved hybrid powertrain that will power flagship versions.
Featuring the familiar, spacious ‘tall-boy’ silhouette of its predecessors, the new Jazz brings to the table a classier cabin design and premieres a new, Honda-first dual-clutch transmission – at least on the petrol-electric versions. The car also debuts the revised underpinnings that will eventually play host to a new sub-compact SUV rival for the Nissan Juke. The Jazz – called the Fit in some markets – will begin a global roll-out in September, and while Honda Australia has given no confirmation, expect to see it in local showrooms in the first quarter of 2014. Honda’s new ‘Sports Hybrid’ system, designed to suit smaller vehicles, combines a single motor, a lithium-ion battery pack and a 1.5-litre Atkinson cycle petrol engine Matched with a new sevenspeed DCT, the Jazz Hybrid
RISE AND FALL: The Falcon will leave Ford showrooms in 2016 as Ford exits Australian manufacturing. AAI data shows that Falcon’s prices ‘kept rising as others stood still’.
JAZZ HANDS: Australia will see the new Honda Jazz in early 2014 although plans for the hybrid version seen here remain unclear.

produces 100kW of power and 182Nm of torque, a boost over the current model’s 72kW/167Nm. Drivers can also cruise for around three kilometres in electric-only mode at speeds of up to 50km/h, and Honda is claiming fuel consumption of approximately 2.7 litres per 100 kilometres on the Japanese test cycle – two-thirds that of the Prius.
Images of the Jazz reveal an entirely new design reminiscent of its larger Civic hatch sibling, with a more angular and aggressive look than the current model. Honda is using the thirdgeneration Jazz to usher in its new ‘Exciting H’ design language that will eventually carry over to other future models in its range.
This is a 35 percent improvement over the current Jazz Hybrid that went on sale in February with fuel use of 4.5L/100km. Honda has provided precious little information on the regular powertrains that will pro-

High prices part of Falcon’s demise New data suggests price increases of Ford Falcon and Holden Commodore relative to imported cars over a long period is a key, but largely unrecognised, factor behind their sales decline – and, in Ford’s case, its demise as a manufacturer in Australia. While much has been written about the reasons behind large-car sales diving dramatically in recent years, a price index compiled by specialist business and policy consultant Australian Automotive Intelligence shows that Falcon and Commodore sedan prices – based on the entry-level six-cylinder automatic model – have risen markedly since the late 1990s, despite imported car prices falling. AAI principal Richard Johns described the pricing history of Falcon and Commodore as ‘the elephant in the room’ when it comes to explaining their sales downturn over the past 10 years.

the upward movement in imported car prices to the mid-1990s before both stabilised for a few years, but in the 2000s prices rose markedly despite falling import prices,” he said. “Both Ford and Holden markedly improved the quality and spec of their cars, with major gains in fuel economy in more recent years. But their prices kept rising as others stood still. This not only created sticker shock, but aggravated the residual problem. “Belatedly, Ford reduced the Falcon price at the end of 2011 with FG MkII, and Holden has followed with this year’s VF, but after the damage was done and most buyers had deserted.” Mr Johns said the Automotive Industry Authority which implemented the ‘Button car plan’ under the Hawke Labor government in 1985, monitored car prices over an eight-year period to 1993 and found local manufacturers had begun routinely raising prices.

Strong start for VF SS-V Redline H
olden’s newly-launched VF Commodore SS-V Redline sedan, wagon and ute performance flagship may be launching two months after its more humble siblings, but early signs show people have been willing to wait.
something reflected in its ‘hearts and minds’ advertising campaign.
Holden has dropped its occasionally coy attitude towards performance data by revealing that the SS-V Redline will crack 100km/h in around 5.5 seconds thanks to a power to weight ratio of 155kW per tonne.
And, says Holden, enthusiasts who have flocked to dealers to express interest in the thoroughly updated Aussie sedan may have to wait a little longer still, if the early-production waiting lists are anything to go by. Despite costing $6000 more than the 270kW/530Nm SS-V with which it shares its engine, Holden says the Redline may account for up to half of SS-V sales overall – about double what the VE version managed.
Pricing Manual versions of the Redline Ute and Sedan will cost $48,990 and $51,490 plus on-road costs respectively. The optional six-speed automatic adds a further $2200, while the auto-only Sportwagon costs $55,690. In addition to the SS-V, the justarrived Redline gets 19-inch forged aluminium wheels, specially developed Bridgestone tyres, thicker stabilizer bars with uprated damper and spring combination, a modified brake system for stiffer pedal feel, a headup display, a unique traction control setting and a launch control system.
For the first time ever Holden has fitted a dual width front/rear tyre combination with the front 19-inch wheels wearing 245/40 Bridgestone rubber while rear wheel are shod with wider 275/35 tyres – a feature previously only seen on HSV models. FLYING: Range-topping Redline is quick on the track and not hanging around in the showroom either, with sales set to double the VE version.
“People are waiting for the SS V Redlines,” says GM Holden large car and SUV marketing manager Kristian Acquilina. Indeed, the waiting list for some variants is understood to be almost out to 2014. “We were going hard after the top end of our model range with the pricing strategy and that seems to be working very well. People are responding to that,” Mr Acquilina said. “We’ve got a bit of a waiting list now on Calais V and SS V. For example Redline was about 25/30 percent of out VE SS V sales it’s more than 50 percent now.” Despite significant improvements to
safety and comfort, the new VF Commodore range also launched with price cuts of between $5000 and $9800 over the previous VE range. The early demand for high-end variants, not necessarily reflected in the VF’s first month of sales figures, carries over to the rest of the line-up too,” Mr Acquilina said. “We were really only in a position to start volume sales of the car in the last week of June. Since then we have seen a lot of activity in showrooms. It’s been a great response from the public we’ve sold 2100 Commodores in the month of June but we took many more orders,” he said.
“We have built up quite an order bank. In fact in the coming months the volumes we show in sales won’t be necessarily a reflection of demand but more of a reflection of supply. “We have seen customers who are loyal to Commodore. We have seen people who are thinking of leaving Commodore – we’ve retained them. We’ve seen people come from small cars and SUVs and we’ve seen people come out of luxury brands who would have never previously considered a Commodore.” This sort of trend is exactly what Holden wanted from the betterequipped and cheaper VF range,
Manners While the specially developed tyre is reported to offer increased track manners and reduced stopping distances, Holden claims the rate of wear has not increased. Chassis modifications were required to accommodate the larger 63mm diameter stabiliser bar, lightweight forged aluminium suspension components and larger bore damper struts with changes resulting in reduced body roll and un-sprung weight. Traction control has been altered for the Redline with a new ‘Competitive’ mode, which increases steering feel and allows rear wheel slip in fast cornering for a more rewarding drive. Tata’s new push I
ndian manufacturer Tata Motors is set to mount a fresh attack on Australia’s ultra-competitive light commercial vehicle market, armed with a national dealer network selling a range of cut-price utes.
POP STAR: Mitsubishi’s Pop Green Mirage with Plus Pack adds styling touches to the top-spec LS variant.
The subcontinental auto giant – which owns Jaguar Land Rover and claims to be the world’s fourth largest truck and bus-maker – has appointed Fusion Automotive as its factory-backed official distributor, and will commence local sales by December.
ON THE MARCH: The Tata Xenon is already sold in Queensland, but will be pushed nationwide through a new distributor.
Based in Melbourne, Fusion Automotive is run by managing director Darren Bowler, a former Walkinshaw Automotive Group director, HSV general sales manager and Audi Australia regional manager.
Tata sells a wide array of vehicles globally, perhaps most famously the sub-$3000 Nano, otherwise known as the world’s cheapest car. It also previously sold the Telcoline ute between 1998 and 2005.
The distributor is keeping quiet on which ute model it will sell first, but GoAuto expects it to be the Nissan Navara-sized Xenon XT, which launched overseas in 2007 and is sold in Spain, Italy and Turkey. Pricing will range between $20,000 and $30,000, depending on body style. “The light commercial seg-
Mitsubishi pops out a green Mirage ment is now the third largest segment of the Australian new-car market, with 13 major brands in the 4x2 and 4x4 categories,” Mr Bowler said. “We believe there is demand in Australia for a utility range of vehicles with the toughness and value-for-money equation that Tata Motors products deliver. The vehicle range, starting with light commercials, will be competitively priced and offer a greater level of value than what is currently available in the market. “There is no tougher place on earth to test vehicles than on the tough and demanding roads of India, and we believe this will give the Tata Mo-
tors products a competitive advantage within the Australian market.”
Queensland dealer Upton’s Motors has been selling the Xenon here in low-key fashion for several years, priced between $21,500 and $30,000 driveaway. However, it is understood Fusion has taken over the exclusive marketing and distribution rights. Mike Costello © GoAutoMedia, 2013
Here’s a Mirage you won’t miss in traffic. Mitsubishi has introduced a special edition of its light-car staple called the Pop Green Plus Pack, which brings to the table a lurid new colour and a range of sporty add-ons. The Plus Pack is based on the range-topping Mirage LS and adds styling touches including an air dam kit, chrome flourishes on the front bumper, tailgate and fog lamp surrounds. Only 400 units will be offered nationally, priced from $16,990 drive-away with the fivespeed manual gearbox, $17,990 with the optional CVT automatic. In manual guise, the Plus Pack retails for the same price as the standard LS, while the driveaway price for the CVT version is $1500 less than the $19,490 charged for the regular LS. Standard features already available in the LS include higher quality interior materials than the lower-spec variants, climate control air conditioning, push-button start, automatic head-lights and wipers, Bluetooth phone and audio streaming and 15-inch alloy wheels.

As with other Mirage variants, the LS is powered by a frugal 57kW 1.2-litre threecylinder engine that produces fuel economy of 4.6 litres per 100km with a manual gearbox and 4.9L/100km when matched with the CVT. The Pop Green Mirage with Plus Pack is available from selected dealers and is sold with the company’s five-year, 150,000km warranty. Mitsubishi has made its presence felt in the light car segment by shifting 5535 Mirages since its launch in January. While it trails the likes of Toyota’s top-selling Yaris, the Mazda2, Hyundai i20 and Suzuki Swift on overall sales for the first six months of the year, it sold 1501 units last month for its best sales result so far, coming in second place behind the Yaris on 1564 units. If Mirage sales continue at this pace, the tiny hatch looks like it could achieve the ambitious sales target of 1000 units per month set by Mitsubishi at the time of launch.
