Frustrated, Binyamin confides in Babbe about the phone calls. Babbe warns Binyamin not to talk to anyone about this because of how dangerous the whole thing is.

CHAPTER SIXTY FIVE

Isru Chag Pesach Binyamin,

We’d appreciate if you’d come on your personal break to change a light-bulb for us and to check if the connections are okay. The bulbs have been burning out very quickly lately. Bring a bulb from the store, and write it down on our account. Thanks, Babbe

“You need to know how to do things,” Babbe said as Binyamin dragged a chair into the middle of the dim room. He looked at

her, somewhat surprised.

“Yes,” he replied after a moment.

“If, for example, I would try to change this light-bulb myself, it would end with me falling from the chair, chalilah; the bulb breaking; and maybe even the whole building burning down. You see, when you start getting busy with something, you have to be very, very careful, and think about every step, because there’s no way to know where it will lead you.”

Binyamin looked at Babbe from his position on the chair, nodding.

“And even if you think you have all the knowledge you need, it’s always better to consult with experts who are older than you.”

“That’s what I did.” His smile was forced, and he slowly unscrewed the old bulb. He wasn’t sure that it had actually finished its job in the world, but he had no intention of checking it either.

“You won’t be able to learn from me how to change a lightbulb.” Sarah Liba’s voice was firm. “I can encourage you, give you advice, direct you, and express my opinion. But in reality? You need someone more active and hands-on than I am today. But he should be no less cautious than me. Not someone young and hotheaded.”

“Like who, for example?” He screwed in the new bulb. She shook her head and waited for him to get off the chair. Then she went over to the cord that hung down from the fixture, and flicked the white switch on the end of it. A soft light filled the room. “Thanks so much!” she exclaimed.

“Elkovitz understands electricity,” her grandson murmured, after a few moments. “I’ve consulted with him in the past, and if I need to, then I might do it again.”

“He understands, or his wife does?”

Binyamin clasped his hands. Babbe grimaced and didn’t say anything. “His basic knowledge probably comes from his wife, but he’s also a clever man.”

“The question is to what extent his wife doesn’t convey things further. I’m not sure Leo Sherer will be happy to know that you’re busy with additional things, like electricity, when your field of work is supposed to be finishing the furs, and only that.”

“I imagine Leo will want me to invest myself in furs until I’m an old man, and he will earn his honor and his salary,” Binyamin said bitterly. “So for that reason, do I really have to spend the rest of my life in a place that…”

“No, you are not supposed to,” Babbe declared. “But if, for example, you want to change light-bulbs—then do it quietly, at home, and not at the factory in front of everyone else, you understand?”

“Yes.”

“And even if at home…” Her voice dropped, and because of that, her tone—laced with rebuke—suddenly sounded very emphatic. “Really, Binyamin! Not in front of the whole family! To put them in danger like that?!”

“It was only because you asked.” For a moment, he forgot the light-bulbs they were talking about, and the dreadful dangers involved in changing them.

Babbe was quiet for a long moment, which was unusual for her. “I really was very, very surprised by what you said you did,” she finally said.

“Well, we’ll be careful next time. No less than we were last time,” Binyamin said, wrapping his fingers around the old light-bulb.

“If not more. Caution never hurts, not with regard to electricity and not with other things either. Why, are you planning to do it again?”

“Maybe,” he whispered, trying to think of an example that would fit in with Babbe’s storyline. “We came out with something very…unclear. The light isn’t sharp at all—it’s very blurry. But we’ll be careful, I promise.”

“Very, very careful,” Babbe said again. “I don’t want you to get an electric shock, chalilah, okay? Or for you to make problematic electric currents in the camp.”

“I absolutely understand.”

“And what about Leo Sherer?”

“I don’t think that his son-in-law and daughter report to him about every person who changes light-bulbs in their personal space.”

She sighed. “But remember something important: Even the private areas here are not really private, right? It is all Wangel’s, it’s all under his control, so please, don’t get anyone angry.”

“B’ezras Hashem,” he said.

“And if you can’t decide on the size or color of the bulbs, or where their location should be, you can always ask me about that.” She finally smiled. “I’d love to be up-todate. You know, the light that we’ll have in the end interests me, too.

Very much.”

***

“How many hours do you have to make up from Pesach, Schvirtz?”

Leo Sherer was going one by one to those who had not worked on Chol Hamoed, and now he was standing, with his notebook, next to Binyamin. “Or rather—how many furs? And stop that horrible noise for a minute, because I want to hear your answer.”

suspended matzah baking incident, or if the Elkovitzes had blurted out something to him.

That wasn’t possible.

“I imagine about three hours each night, for the next two weeks.”

“I’ll give you a permit to be out— not at the beginning of the night but before daybreak. Meet your quotas,” he snapped and then turned to go. Binyamin saw him stop next to David Elkovitz and exchange a few words with him, and then he again wrote something down in his notes. Oh, it was possible that was also causing his obvious irritation.

“Background noise is good. Especially as we have lots of night hours ahead of us here, and that’s a great time to talk.”

“Won’t you be tired?” one of the fifteen-year-old youngsters who walked by at that moment asked compassionately. He was pushing a large wagon with two heavy, hairy furs in it. He raised them with effort onto the low table in Binyamin’s corner.

“I hope not.” Binyamin smiled at him. “I’m already used to making up time for Chol Hamoed after each Yom Tov.”

The youth smiled back and moved on with the empty wagon.

“Either seven small ones or four big ones,” Binyamin replied politely as his foot eased off the machine’s pedal. “Depends what they send me.”

“And how many night hours will you need for that?” He was very impatient today, and seemed to be trying to exude obvious displeasure. Binyamin wondered if it was still the tension that had not dissipated between the two groups since the

“I’m not so used to it. I hope it will be okay,” Elkovitz said, appearing at that moment. He was holding a bottle of machine oil. Leaning over, he dripped a few drops of unsavorylooking green liquid into the gears of the sewing machine at Binyamin’s feet. “It’s making so much noise,” he noted. “I guess a week without moving did something to it.”

“So why are you fixing it?” Binyamin looked at him as he pressed the pedal again forcefully. The noise was deafening, and now Elkovitz could

only read his lips. “Background noise is good. Especially as we have lots of night hours ahead of us here, and that’s a great time to talk.”

David’s hand drew back at once. “You’re right,” he said. The machine grew quiet, and he banged on the underside a number of times, in a few places. Binyamin looked at him, a smile playing around his eyes.

“Keep working, and we’ll keep an eye on the noise,” Elkovitz said, and Binyamin pressed the pedal forcefully again. The noise only got worse, and in addition to the grating growls of the machine, there was also a monotonous whine, maybe a result of the bit of oil that Elkovitz had managed to drip inside.

“With this noise, we can also talk on the phone,” Binyamin whispered.

Elkovitz raised his eyes to Binyamin. “Telephone? At night?” his lips said. “Who will answer you in the middle of the night? You think they also have to make up lost time from Chol Hamoed for the next few nights?”

“I don’t know what’s happening there.” Binyamin selected his words carefully. “Somehow it looks to me that it’s better there than here, and that’s exactly what I want to check out.”

“At night.”

“The Wangels are sleeping then, right?”

“Chances are that yes.”

“So for that reason alone it’s worth it for us to try out the night hours. If they don’t answer at Hanter’s place, we’ll have to find a different time.”

“And this time, I’m not drowning Josef’s phone.”

“Of course not. This time, I’ll volunteer, if it becomes necessary.”

“Is that telephone device still in your sister’s house?”

“Yes.”

“Hidden well, I hope.”

“Obviously.”

Elkovitz stood up and capped the small oil bottle. “We need to think about what to do with this noise!” he shouted over the roaring machine, and started to walk off. “Maybe we need to open it and check it from inside. But for now, just continue. Every minute of work is important.”

“You weren’t able to get that thing to quiet down, David?” Leo Sherer stopped his son-in-law as he turned to go up the stairs toward the supply room. “It’s good Herr Wangel is not coming now for an inspection. That noise drives him crazy.”

“I wasn’t able to; if anything, it only got worse. It’s possible we’ll have to change one of the rubber belts. I’m going to check if we have something suitable.”

“Before you start opening things and taking them apart, consult with Suzy,” his father-in-law instructed from the bottom of the staircase. “There’s no point in you destroying this expensive machine. In any case, do it at a time when Schvirtz is working on hand sewing. He’s fallen behind enough as it is; we don’t need further delays.” And without another word, he resumed his patrol of the production floor.

Elkovitz went back up to the ground floor and walked toward the large supply room. He had no idea what Suzy would say about Binyamin’s plans. In the fifteen years that had passed since Rabbi Schvirtz had died, she hadn’t spoken much about the incident. But from what she had said, it was clear that she also had suspicions about the story they had all grown up with, about the Wangels risking their lives to conceal the last Jewish community in the world.

Now, though, she was frightened. TO

Reduce Pre-Pesach Stress through Understanding Hilchos Pesach

There is a Halachic difference between the prohibition of eating chometz and the prohibition of owning chometz.

THE PROHIBITION OF EATING CHOMETZ IS VERY STRINGENT. It is forbidden to eat even the tiniest amount of chometz. And on Pesach itself, batel b'shishim doesn't apply. However, food that is prepared before Pesach does have the leniency of batel b'shishim, where chometz is nullified when dissolved in food that is sixty times greater in volume. This is one reason many people like to do as much cooking as possible before Pesach.

THE PROHIBITION OF OWNING CHOMETZ IS FAR LESS STRINGENT. According to Torah Law, the prohibition of owning chometz requires us to verbally nullify all chometz belonging to us or to remove chometz which is a k'zayis or larger. (A k'zayis is around 1/3 oz –1 oz in weight or approximately the volume that would fit in a small matchbox.) According to Rabbinic Law (D'Rabbanan), we must do both, nullify the chometz and remove chometz which is a k'zayis or larger. The prohibition of owning chometz does not require us to remove chometz smaller than a k'zayis.

(Chometz the size of a k'zayis which can't be removed and is inedible to a dog is not considered chometz and does not need to be removed. “The requirement for chometz to actually be inedible to a dog only applies to a k’zayis.” (Magen Avraham; Mishnah Berurah).

Chometz that is smaller than a k'zayis but larger than a crumb i.e. an identifiable food (ex: a wafer, a half of a cookie, a small pretzel) should also be removed.

Chometz crumbs, according to the Gemara, are inherently nullified (Pesachim 6b). Removal of chometz crumbs is required only when there is a fear that a person may come to eat them, such as where the crumbs could get into the Pesach food or onto the table, or adhere to one's hands or be picked up by a young child or crawling toddler.

There is no need to clean places where chometz is not brought in during the year.

BOOKS: Books that will be brought to the table on Pesach must be thoroughly cleaned

of crumbs and sticky residue – or should be new. (Since siddurim are often kept on the table during the year, many people like to buy new siddurim, which they use only on Pesach.) If seforim or books are not brought to the table, they do not need to be cleaned or inspected at all. One who davens or learns on Pesach from uncleaned seforim should clean their hands before handling food.

ZEMIROS/BENTCHERS: Zemiros and bentchers that were used together with chometz often have crumbs in them and should not be used on Pesach. They should be placed in a closed closet. (There is no obligation to clean or sell them, but rather to put them away so that they do not contact our food on Pesach).

TOYS & GAMES: Toys and games that will be used on Pesach should be cleaned thoroughly so that no crumbs or sticky residue gets on our hands. If they will not be used on Pesach, it is enough to place them in a closed closet.

CLOTHES: Clothes that will be worn should have their pockets checked for crumbs. Clothes that won't be worn on Pesach, but that occasionally have chometz in their pockets, need a quick check to see that they do not contain larger pieces of chometz. Since they are not going to be worn, any small crumbs do not have to be removed (since there is no prohibition to own them during Pesach).

LIGHT SWITCHES/ DOOR HANDLES: Light switches and door handles may need washing/wiping as needed, because people often touch them after handling food. The same applies to (hair brushes) pens, phones, etc.

TOASTER: Since it is not used on Pesach, it is enough to just shake out the loose crumbs and put it away in a closed closet together with the other chometz utensils.

POTS: There is no obligation to scrub them. They can just be placed in a closed closet. Some have a minhag to clean their pots more thoroughly. (According to halacha, chometz smaller than a k'zayis that is stuck on a pot is nullified to the pot and considered part of the pot.)

FLOORS: Floors should be swept or vacuumed. Vacuuming a carpet cleans it

sufficiently (since any remaining crumbs are not fit for eating).

The Chazon Ish (122:8) quotes the Vilna Gaon that crumbs caught between the floorboards do not have to be removed. Even if there are many crumbs that add up collectively to a k’zayis, they are not a problem halachically, because they are dried out and unappetizing.

The following is written in Shulchan Aruch Harav (433:19):

“The main reason to physically remove chometz, even though one is going to nullify it, is to prevent a person from eating it.”

All these instructions should not be taken to exempt family members from helping to make the house clean and shining, as well as kosher for Pesach. It is indeed part of the signature of Pesach to have a home that is extra-special clean. The wholehearted participation—without criticism—of family members makes a big difference and brings much joy to the Yom Tov.

It is a heilige minhag throughout the generations to clean the house more than it is obligatory. At the same time, each person must be very careful to do so in accordance with his or her strength and ability. Each person must do so only up to where it does not take away from health, safety, and joy in the Yom Tov.

May we be zoche with anticipation, happiness and excitment to prepare for Pesach without any stress or fear, but out of anticipation, and with happiness and excitement. May we merit the coming of Moshiach, speedily in our days, Amen.

Wishing everyone a Kosher and Happy Pesach!

MIRACLEBABY

Recap: Chayala is adjusting to being at home.

We are going back to Eretz Yisroel! I am ecstatic. We were living there before Chayala was born, since we got married, but we rushed back to America when we heard there were complications and have been here ever since. It has been over a year. Until now, the doctor did not allow us to fly, because Chayala is on oxygen. She stopped having oxygen by day at ten months, but she is still on it at night and when she is sick. Now that she is fourteen months, the doctor finally gave us permission to fly with her. We are buying a portable oxygen concentrator to bring on the flight for her. It costs around four thousand dollars,

but since we will probably be flying back and forth a few times a year in the next few years, it is worth it for us to invest in one. We also can only book a direct flight with a main airline, like Elal or United, because smaller airlines will not allow us to bring oxygen on board.

Chayala has made so much progress over the past few months. She just stopped using the feeding tube, which is a major accomplishment, and has developed her skills immensely thanks to all the therapy she has. In retrospect, I wish I would have waited a few weeks before starting therapy, to give Chayala some time to recover and relax after everything she went through in the hospital, but we were under pressure and thought it would be best

The contrast of our delicious daughter and how much she advanced so far is stark.

to begin immediately. Either way, now Chayala is doing amazing, Baruch Hashem, and we are ready to bring her back to Eretz Yisroel with us.

We are finally back in Yerushalayim! The first trip we take is to the Kosel. I am very emotional. The last time I was here, I had not even known what to daven for. The doctors had said the baby probably would not make it, and even if she did, would not be a normal person. But here I am, with Chayala in my arms. Not only did she survive, she is thriving and blossoming. I am blown away at the miracle we experienced. Really, every time a baby is born, it is miraculous, but in situations like these, where the doctors were sure it would not end well, the contrast of our delicious daughter and how much she advanced so far is stark.

Now that we are back, there are so many details to iron out, it is overwhelming. Besides for finding new therapists for Chayala, we also need to get her onto insurance. However, no insurance wants to accept her, as she has pre-existing medical issues. We had not yet registered for Bituach Leumi, the

national health insurance here, which would have made it easier to get Chayala onto insurance. We end up paying someone around five thousand dollars to take care of the bureaucracy of getting her onto Bituach Leumi and somehow setting up insurance for her.

Even once Chayala is on insurance, it takes time adjusting to the medical system here. There are no exceptions for her, even though she has a weak immune system, and no coming in through the back door of the doctor’s office – we have to wait in the waiting room like everyone else.

Ten months later:

I started sending Chayala to gan (as playgroup is called over here) two months ago. She barely goes, though, because she keeps getting sick. Her low immune system, combined with being in a group of children, where germs spread easily, is a recipe for catching every cold, virus, and bug that goes around. However, I still think it is worth it. It is an important step in her development, and being around other kids is good for her. • THE END

Epilogue:

Today, Chayala is an adorable, precocious three-year-old. She runs around, throws tantrums, and causes trouble with the cutest mischievous grin on her face. The only way to tell she was a preemie is her size: she is still extremely small for her age. Besides for that, she is a normal, regular, healthy child, and we cannot stop thanking Hashem for the incredible miracle.

The ODA Center for Advanced Vision Care is proud to announce The Kohelet Project: an initiative to extend the Center’s care to the greater New York area. The idea of this project is based on a pasuk in Kohelet (4:12): “

(“And a three-ply cord is not easily severed”). This project hopes to develop and maintain a “three-ply cord” approach between the Center of Advanced Vision Care and our patients who travel a distance to our Center, beginning with the Boro Park, Flatbush, Monroe, Monsey and Spring Valley communities... together we can accomplish what we cannot alone.

The vision therapy program at the ODA Center for Advanced Vision Care provides an individualized and unique approach to the remediation of visual dysfunction. As such, we would like to provide this service to those outside the Williamsburg community. The first phase of The Kohelet Project, will utilize a carpool system. This system will allow patients from the Boro Park, Flatbush, Monroe, Monsey and Spring Valley areas to organize carpools for weekly vision therapy sessions. We hope to extend this program in the future through other means of transportation and to encompass other locations outside of the Williamsburg area. The ultimate goal of The Kohelet Project is to expand our patient care reach to those who may feel geographically inaccessible to our services.

The ODA Center for Advanced Vision Care in Williamsburg takes a deeper dive into diagnosing and treating visual dysfunction. Vision is more than being able to see 20/20. There are two unique eye systems that work in tandem to create a comfortable and clear visual image: the accommodative or focusing system and the vergence or eye positioning system. If one of these systems becomes susceptible to dysfunction one’s ability to see, learn, and process the world around them will be compromised.

How does the ODA Center for Advanced Vision Care remediate visual dysfunction? The program, designed by the Director of Vision Therapy, Joel Warshowsky O.D., uses a two-pronged approach based on the foundations of behavioral optometry to provide treatment that will be sustained even after a patient completes vision therapy. First, the use of glasses with a unique combination of progressive bifocal correction and prism provides comfort to the patient’s accommodative and vergence systems. Second, is a unique vision therapy program designed by Dr. Warshowsky. The purpose of the vision therapy program is not simply to alleviate one’s symptoms. Vision therapy is a treatment therapy that enables new neural connections in the brain to be made to create a new framework to interpret and process the world, allowing each patient to reach their inherent potential.

BE FIT WITH BENEFIT

QI know you wrote about this in the past, but I am still a little stuck. I came a long way, made healthy changes for myself and my family, yet I am still stuck with reaching the ultimate goal for myself, which is wanting to weigh a certain number and fit into a certain dress. If I need help with motivating myself to push to the finish line, can you inspire me?

ALosing weight and maintaining a healthy lifestyle is not just about counting calories or following the latest diet trend. Seems like you picked up on that! The real foundation of long-term success lies in motivation and mindset. Without the right mental approach, even the best weight loss plan can fall apart.

Motivation is the driving force behind every healthrelated decision we make. Whether it’s choosing a salad over fries or waking up early for a workout, motivation determines our actions. However, motivation fluctuates—it’s easy to be inspired at the start, but when challenges arise, many people lose steam. Firstly, I want to mention that your question is specifically posed around being motivated to fit into a certain dress or weigh a certain amount. I want you to ponder- who was the one that set these physical goals for yourself? Was it your friend? Doctor? Mother? An online BMI or weight chart? You first have to assess if your goal and desires are even healthy and attainable and actually make sense. Who says that weighing in at a certain number is the best thing for you at this time? Who says that the dress you were at your sheva brachos 9 years ago must fit you now? Make sure that your end goal is attainable and respectful to yourself. If your goal is truly attainable, let’s see how we can help you get there!

To sustain motivation, it's important to:

• Identify your “why” – Define clear reasons for wanting to lose weight, such as improving energy levels, boosting confidence, or reducing health risks. For instance, why do you want to fit into a certain dress?

• Set realistic goals – Instead of vague goals like “lose weight,” aim for specific and measurable targets, such as “lose 10 pounds in three months.” I find that when I set very specific goals with clients, for instance if we are 5 weeks before Pesach and we set a 6-pound goal, one

feels like they are working towards something that is actually achievable and sustainable. Feeling like you need to fix your cholesterol levels to perfect in a week is unattainable. Rather, setting goal with your doctor’s approval with small benchmarks for success along the way will make you feel like you are really reaching new heights.

• Track progress – Keeping a journal or using a fitness app can reinforce motivation by showing improvements over time. Having your nutritionist or coach monitor your goals along with you weekly is very helpful. While motivation gets you started, mindset determines whether you stay on track. A positive and resilient mindset can make all the difference in achieving health goals. Here’s how:

• Adopt a growth mindset – People with a growth mindset see challenges as opportunities to learn rather than failures. If you overeat one day, don’t give up; instead, reflect and adjust for the future. You get better and better at this with time.

• Practice self-compassion – Avoid harsh selfcriticism. A single setback does not define your journey. Treat yourself with the same kindness you would offer a friend. If you were 70% perfect one day and lost control for some day, do focus on what you did right….

• Focus on habits, not perfection – Sustainable weight loss is about building better habits, not being perfect. Small, consistent actions—like drinking more water or taking the stairs—add up over time. Every single little step in the right direction adds up.

• It is important to celebrate your wins, yet also know how to gently nudge yourself back onto track if you really and truly want to reach certain goals for yourself that make sense for you at this point in your life.

The Meraglim returned with negative reports about Eretz Yisroel, claiming that the Kenaanim were too powerful to defeat. Yehoshua & Kalev opposed this by telling the Jewish people, “Do not rebel against Hashem, and you will not fear the people of that land, for they are our bread…” This statement reflects a central theme: if the Jews would not rebel against Hashem and instead follow His instructions, they would have no reason to fear the land’s inhabitants. The phrase “our bread” symbolized that Hashem would lovingly and easily enable the Jews to conquer the land, just as He had lovingly provided them with Mohn—the equivalent of bread.

4. FUN FACT

When Sarai’s name was changed to Sara, the Yud soared before Hashem and asked, “Did You remove me from Sara the Tzadekes’ name because I am the smallest of the letters?” Hashem promised the little letter that it would later be added to the beginning of Yehoshua’s name (since his name was changed from Hoshea to Yehoshua).

Yehoshua Bin Nun was the devoted student of Moshe Rabbeinu and eventually became his successor. He was one of the Meraglim sent to scout Eretz Yisrael and, along with Kalev, were the only ones to return with a positive report. As the leader of the Jewish people, Yehoshua led them into battle to conquer Eretz Yisrael, which included the miraculous fall of Yericho’s walls and the incident in Givon, when he famously stopped the sun. Rachav played a key role in the Yericho story. After she converted, Yehoshua married her.

3. BRINGING IT DOWN

When facing a difficult situation, turn to Hashem. There is no reason to be afraid, knowing that He will help you. For example, if you’re afraid of the dark, you can say Shema. Or, if you feel nervous about meeting someone new, you can focus on treating them with Ahavas Yisrael. In both cases, trust that Hashem will help make the experience easier.

5. QUESTION TO CONSIDER

When you feel afraid, how can you turn to Hashem in these times?

Color in the Shivas Haminim template. Then, cut out each picture and use the glue stick to attach each pair so it’s double-sided.

Cut out the plastic pictures into square shapes.

Cut out the middle of 2 plates to create a flat piece of plastic. Use a paintbrush to spread glue over 1 of the plastics and stick each colored picture on top, ensuring a half-inch space around each. Paint a thin layer of glue over the pictures so they are firmly stuck to the plastic.

Pour 3 oz of glue on the last plate. Tilt it around so the glue fills the plate. Center the paper rectangle under the last clear plate to use as a rectangle guide, and place the Shivas Haminim pieces inside the plate, within the guidelines of the rectangle.

Let it dry for 3 days or till completely dry. Then take the dry piece of glue off the plate and cut it to the shape of a rectangle.

Cover the second plastic with glue and cover the pictures. Press down on all sides. Let dry for 3 minutes.

Pour 1 oz of glue over the pieces. Use a toothpick to arrange the pieces and to pop any bubbles in the glue. Sprinkle some glitter over the bookmark.

Punch a hole in the top center and string the ribbon through the hole and knot it. Curl the ribbon with a pair scissors for an extra flair!
