AS TOLD TO RAIZY KATZ

Recap: Chani is admitted to the hospital and diagnosed with Crohn's disease.

CHAPTER 2

“Hello, hello. I’m Doctor Brown. Are you the mother of Chani?” he pronounced it like kani, which made me almost start laughing. I quickly sobered up when I remembered the reason he was here, though.

“Yes,” I said.

“So, after looking at these test results and her overall condition, I think we should start her on a medication called Remicade. It’s strong and usually works wonders. It may take her a bit of time to recover from this incident, but she should be as good as new with this medicine.”

I had so many questions, my mind was whirling.

“Are there any other options? How long will she have to take this medication for? What if it doesn’t help? Did you ever have any patients like that?”

The doctor held up his hand as if to stem the flow of questions spewing out of my mouth.

“There are other options of medications, but I think this one is best for now. If there are any issues, we can try other types of medications. Don’t worry about that now, though. We’ll deal with that if we get there. Remicade works for most patients and allows them to live a normal life, as if they don’t have a medical condition.”

“How long does she have to take the Remicade for?” I was definitely thinking of shidduchim with this question.

“Well, most probably for the rest of her life,” the doctor casually responded.

“Oh. Does it ever happen that someone could stop taking the medication at some point?”

The doctor scratched his head. “Well, I heard of it happening, but very, very rarely.”

I had no time to ruminate over this disturbing piece of information. I had to take advantage of the doctor being here and find out all relevant information. After he gave me the rundown of how the medication is administered, possible side effects, and other details, I dared to ask an audacious question: are there any other effective treatments besides medication?

“But now, she was weak and tired in a way that was hard for her friends to understand.”

“Things like diet and lifestyle definitely can have an effect. But there are no studies suggesting that those alone can do the job. It needs to be done in conjunction with medication,” he declared.

Chani was discharged from the hospital at the end of the week, just in time for Shabbos. I was so glad we didn’t have to spend Shabbos in the hospital. I had my hands full, though. I had to pull together Shabbos (mostly from the freezer, my mother, and takeout) and take care of Chani, who was still feeling weak, although much better than before. Another issue was that the rest of my kids had barely seen me the whole week, and now needed an overdose of Mommy time. Plus, I was exhausted. Those hospital chairs are quite uncomfortable and not a good substitute for a bed! Still, I was grateful that we were home, and that Chani was slowly getting better.

On Shabbos afternoon, a few of Chani’s friends stopped by.

“Good Shabbos,” Malky, Chani’s closest friend, greeted me. “We came to see how Chani’s doing.”

I watched Chani’s face light up when her friends came. She had been out of school for nearly a month already, and she missed

the active social life she had had until now. Many girls had called to see how she was doing, but only her close friends actually made the effort to come visit.

At a certain point, however, I felt that the visit was stretching on and was too much for Chani. “Girls, I think Chani is ready to take a nap now,” I told them. Before she got Crohn’s, Chani was able to schmooze away the afternoon like any girl her age. But now, she was weak and tired in a way that was hard for her friends to understand. Even just sitting and talking with her friends took a lot of energy out of her. I hoped the medicine would kick in and help her get back to her usual lively self.

Two weeks after Chani got her first dose of Remicade, we went for some bloodwork to make sure everything was doing well. I got a call from her doctor the next day. I picked up the phone, my stomach doing flip-flops and tumble sauces.

“I don’t have such good news,” the doctor said. “Chani has not responded well to the medication. It’s already two weeks in, and I don’t see signs that the medicine is helping.”. •

NINE A.M. IS A COMPLETELY FICTIONAL STORY WHICH TAKES PLACE FIFTY YEARS AFTER THE HOLOCAUST.

RECAP OF CHAPTER 43: Naomi asks her mother-in-law what to do about Elky’s situation. Mottel Kush faints in shul, and Chani tells Naomi to bring the Kushes a tray of food. Elky won’t tell Naomi what she is doing with all her money.

CHAPTER FORTY FOUR

Sara Liba,

I’m afraid that his liver has been very damaged. In order to know how to treat it and which medications to prescribe for him, I need blood tests. I have nudged Wangel enough in the past few months regarding antibiotics and other medications. Can you ask them to send a blood sample to a private lab, like we did last year for Zuretzky’s son? Stress that we are asking for an urgent liver function test, and let them find a cover story for it.

Annie

“He was hospitalized last night. Don’t spread the news,” Babbe told Naomi in the classroom, showing her the note.

“But liver problems need to be treated immediately.”

Naomi nodded, not understanding why her grandmother had come to show her the note in these early morning hours. The little ones were still playing calmly, even a bit sleepily, in the corner of the room. The older kids were heatedly discussing which jobs they should choose at the end of the winter, when they would leave the school framework.

“Dr. Katzburg knows that I also nudged Katarina no less than she did.” Babbe’s eyes looked sunken. “And she still threw it into my lap. I’m not angry—she thought it would be more effective—but I have a feeling that they won’t listen to me anymore, either. Katarina got very angry at me last time I approached her.”

patients.”

“Elkovitz’s baby?”

“No. It’s usually simpler when Leo Sherer’s family is involved. Anyway, it makes no difference who it was; baruch Hashem the patient recovered even without the stronger antibiotics. You know, it’s not the infection that kills and not the antibiotics that give life…but we have to do our hishtadlus.”

“Right.”

“In any case, I’m here because it’s time to inject some new blood into the system,” Babbe said calmly. “Naomi, I want you to find Katarina and speak to her about this.”

“Me?”

“Yes, you.”

“Excuse me for asking, Babbe,” Naomi stammered, eyes darting about, “b-but…why not my mother? Katarina likes her.”

“I don’t want them to look at you like a new activist. At least not yet. That’s how they would see your mother if she asked them. But you—you’re coming innocently, as Elky’s good friend.”

“Former. We’re not so you know…” “They don’t know that.” Babbe shook her head. “This is about Mottel Kush’s life, Naomi. If it’s liver disease, we need the right medications. And they won’t give us any medication if we don’t have proof that that is all that will save him.”

“Fine. So I’ll go to her after lu—”

“Go now. I’ll help Rivku and Katy over here,” her grandmother said. “When do classes start in your ‘Bais Yaakov’?”

“At ten.”

“If you’re not back by then, I’ll teach your students. Which lesson?”

“I’ve started teaching them Navi. I’m telling them about Yehoshua and the capture of Yericho.”

“Excellent. So I’ll continue. Do you have a Tanach here?”

“Yes, it’s in the closet over there. I got permission to take it out of the shul.” She was worried. “Where do you think Katarina is now, Babbe?”

“Maybe in the sewing shop, or she’s patrolling around the paths.”

“And if not?”

“Go to the manor house and ask nicely to be allowed in.”

Naomi was quiet.

“Your mother-in-law has been doing it every day for years already.” Babbe winked. “It’s not as scary as it sounds. And I trust that you’ll know to be careful.”

“Amen.” Naomi looked behind her, at the children who were slowly starting to lose their patience. “If you want, Babbe, you can also start telling them about Purim…and in the meantime, fast for me.” A shadow of a smile— albeit a shaky one—crossed her lips.

“The children in the second group will probably also want to listen. You can let them.”

“Do you think I would have sent them away?”

“Rivku doesn’t get involved; it’s great.” Naomi lowered her voice.

“Lots of her children listen to many of my stories…”

“Off you go, Naomi darling.”

“Yes, yes,” Naomi said. She began to move heavily, as if her legs were made of iron.

“And I’m davening,” her grandmother said as she escorted her to the door. “And fasting. At least until you get back.”

“Naomi?” Binyamin was just walking out of the door of the factory when she approached, looking somewhat distraught. “Is everything okay? You don’t usually wander around these parts.”

“Right.”

“Did you want Aryeh?”

“Is Wangel inside by you?”

“No. We haven’t seen him in two days. I think he went to the city.”

“And his wife?”

“Not here.”

“So I need to go to their house, then…” She took a deep breath. “Glad to hear he’s not around.”

“You’re going to them at their house?! You, Naomi?!”

“Yes. For Mottel Kush, whatever. Babbe said he needs an urgent blood test done, and they want me to ask

for it, because I’m friends with Elky. Is his son here?”

“No.”

“Baruch Hashem. Even better.” She turned to the other direction, gazing at the distant gate behind which rose the Wangel family’s impressive manor house.

“Do you want me to come with you? I’m on my break.”

“You won’t have enough time. It’s better if you go and daven for me instead.”

“Okay. Honestly, I was just thinking about going to Tatte’s kever,” he murmured. “Though I’d be happy to accompany you to their private property, Naomi, just to be able to glance around there. At the garden, and the toolshed that Tatte built there.”

“On the one hand, you’re warning me not to tell the kids anything that might be interpreted as a yearning to get out of here and go to Eretz Yisrael. On the other hand, you are thinking about searching the estate gardens?!”

“It’s just a thought, Naomi. I wouldn’t actually do any real searching. I thought that if I would have the opportunity… Ever since Wangel said something to me about Tatte’s writings, the subject has been on my mind a lot. What’s their story with him? I wish I could find something that he left.”

“What kind of something?”

“I don’t know—some kind of letter, a note…”

“Binyamin, if Tatte had left something that they didn’t want us to know about, they’ve had more than fifteen years to hide it, you know.” She was walking fast, not looking at her brother who hurried to keep up with her pace. “The fact that he asked you just shows how much you can’t touch this whole issue.”

“You’re right.”

“So just stop thinking about what Tatte left and what happened to him. Because if your thoughts are wrong, then why waste time and energy on them? And if they are right, it’s just as dangerous to be busy with it as my telling my students stories about

Eretz Yisrael.”

He stopped and forced a smile. “Right again. Good thing I have such a calm and logical sister like you!”

“So go and daven for me, as a reward.”

“I will. I told you I would.”

“Thank you. Bye.”

Binyamin turned toward the small cemetery at the foot of the wall. He crossed the area of the kennels and waved at Yanku Elkovitz, knowing that at least he wouldn’t see Mottel Kush collecting bread here right now. It was really foolish to be busy with things that had happened more than fifteen years ago. Nothing would change them. He was better off investing his energy in things that could still be changed.

He walked silently along the row of white headstones. From afar, he could discern his father’s gravesite, next to the burial sites of his Schvirtz grandparents. The black words were etched onto the silent, white rectangle, and Binyamin mouthed the words, like he did every time he came here.

He approached from the side to put his hand on the matzeivah, but then he froze. A single word, with small letters, had been written in black ink, on the side of the stone, at the bottom, where it was nearly touching the earth.

***

The car drove off in the distance, and Dena straightened Shloimy’s hat. “That’s what happens when we go to sleep late,” she said to him. “We get up late. We can’t go to cheder anymore, because it’s almost lunchtime, so instead, we’ll go to Bubby.”

The little boy pouted. “I didn’t go to sleep late!”

“But you got up in middle of the night and were crying and crying, and then Mommy also barely slept. Why were you crying last night, Shloimy?”

“It wasn’t me!” Shloimy insisted. “Duvi cried!”

“Duvi slept all night and woke up on time in the morning, so he went in Tatty’s car to cheder. Now Mommy and Shloimy are going to Bubby, right?” She studied him. At night she had been afraid he was running

a fever, but the thermometer indicated that he was not. And this morning he’d woken up cheerful as ever, so it didn’t seem that his crying had been because of anything serious.

“Hello, hello!” Her mother-in-law opened the door with her pleasant smile, and motioned for them to move to the left. Lena was washing the floor in the hallway. Dena and Shloimy had no choice but to enter the large dining room, whose floor was already dry. She sat down on the sofa and seated Shloimy next to her.

He wanted to stand and look at the large china closet above the couch. The ten violinists crafted from silver that lined one shelf drew his attention.

“We don’t stand on the couch, Shloimy!” Dena said tiredly. “Only sitting.”

“I want one of those mentchies!” the little boy chirped.

“It’s not a mentchie we play with,” his grandmother said as she bustled in. “Bubby will give you other toys, but not in this room. We don’t bring toys into here. Dena, do you want to go lie down, and I’ll watch him?”

“No, thanks.” Dena felt uncomfortable. It was enough that her mother-in-law knew that she’d slept until nearly ten, and Bentzy had been the one who had gotten up early and sent their older son out to cheder. And it was enough that later, her mother-in-law would be babysitting the two boys when their mother went to work at the factory.

“Soon Duvi will be coming home,” she said. “He’s coming with a friend’s father who takes a few kids home every day. I called and asked if they could drop him off here today instead of at home. I hope it doesn’t bother you that we came by; Shloimy was so bored at home without Duvi…”

“It’s not a bother at all,” her mother-in-law said, but Dena wondered if she meant it. “But we just have to wait for the floor to dry, and then Shloimy can go and play in the other room. Oh, Dena, Tatty asked me to tell you that he needs for tomorrow the list of our clients from the last six months. Can you prepare the list today when you get to the office?”

“Where do I get the information from?”

“In the top drawer there is a receipt file—this orange cardboard file. You need to go over the receipts and see which of them are from the last half a year, and prepare a list like that.”

“Sure,” Dena said, and a little bell, with a strange ring, began to toll in her mind.

What to know about Play Therapy

Why Play?

More than just a chance to have fun, play is serious business when it comes to a child’s health and development. From peek-a-boo to pat-a-cake and hide-and-seek to hopscotch, the many forms of play enrich a child’s brain, body and life in important ways.

When it comes to children’s mental health, play is essential. Unlike adults, children don’t have the vocabulary to convey what’s on their minds and often resort to play as a way to understand their world and regulate their emotions. One of the most significant benefits of play is that it allows children to explore their feelings and process what’s happening for them in that moment. When children are dealing with complex issues such as divorce, it often shows up in their play and gives them a way to express what they are struggling with as Garry Landerth, a leading play therapist quotes” the toys are the words by children and the play is their language”. Through play, children act out different scenarios, experiment with new behaviors, work through difficult emotions, and process traumatic events.

Why Play Therapy?

Play therapy is a powerful tool for addressing cognitive, behavioral, and emotional challenges. Play is used to understand what is on a child’s mind because play is children’s natural medium of expression. It involves the use of creative and expressive communication through which children can make sense of their feelings and the world in which they live in. While play therapy, like all therapy, is conducted by way of appointment, it is the choice of play objects and how they are used that often provide clues to a child’s development level, their family

and social relationships, the difficulties they are experiencing in life, their inner world and provide significant healing properties all at once. A child may be given access to trucks and phones and other toys, to drawing and painting, to doll and action figures, to puppets, to stuffed animals, to sand play and more: an elected array of therapeutic items used by the child as a means of communicating their needs, under the tutelage of an empathic therapist who understands the child’s sometimes chaotic world. Unlike many other therapies, play therapy is directed by the child who chooses the content and purpose of their actions, following their own instincts and interests, in their own way for their own reasons. It is the act of self-expression that initiates the therapeutic process and allows healing to occur.

Crucial to the child’s healing is the trusting and non-judgmental relationship between the child and the therapist which allows the child to have the freedom to be themselves and express their inner struggles and joys. The therapist is fully present with the child entering their world with acceptance and unconditional positive regard creating a safe environment for progress to take place.

Why Play Therapists?

A play therapist is a licensed mental health professional qualified to apply the many therapeutic powers of play to help children and families work through difficult situations and experiences. The extensive specialized training and education a play therapist has surpassed, makes them qualified to assess and treat children with mental health conditions, behavioral disorders, and developmental differences such as autism and ADHD.

Chaya Blumenberg LCSW, RPT is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Registered Play Therapist in private practice. Chaya provides Individual and Group therapy for children and can be reached at 917-6861473 or at info@chayablumenberg.com

BE FIT WITH BENEFIT

AQOne of my kids is off sugar for health reasons (we probably should all be doing that) and I am wondering what my best alternative options are. Whenever I'm looking for a sweet taste, I use monk fruit with erythritol. I also hooked onto coconut sugar which works great for me in challah etc. but doesn't have such a sweet taste. Are these two items healthier than sugar? Do you have any other suggestions?

You did not mention why it is that your child needs to be off of sugar. My response would really vary if I knew some more details. For example, if your child is diabetic, as opposed to taking your child off of sugars for behavioral reasons, would warrant a different response. But here is a more generalized response.

When your child is off sugar for health reasons, finding suitable replacements can be tricky. You want something that’s not only healthier but also tasty enough for kids to enjoy. Let’s explore some of the best sugar alternatives, including monk fruit, erythritol, coconut sugar, and other options, to help you make informed choices.

1) Monk Fruit- Monk fruit sweetener is derived from the monk fruit (luo han guo), a small fruit native to Southeast Asia. It contains natural compounds which are 100-250 times sweeter than sugar, without raising blood sugar levels.

Benefits:

-Zero calories and carbs- making it a great option for children with diabetes or those on low-carb diets.

- No impact on blood sugar: Monk fruit is considered safe for kids, especially if they need to manage blood sugar levels.

- Natural origin: It’s a plant-based sweetener with no known side effects.

-Taste profile: Monk fruit has a mild aftertaste, but many find it quite pleasant. It blends well in baked goods, beverages, and even savory dishes.

Monk fruit is a fantastic sugar alternative, especially for children, since it’s naturally sourced, calorie-free, and does not spike insulin levels.

2. Erythritol- Erythritol is a sugar alcohol that’s naturally found in some fruits like grapes and melons, though it is typically manufactured from corn. It has about 70% of the sweetness of sugar but contains almost zero calories and has no impact on blood sugar.

Benefits:

- Does not raise blood sugar or insulin levels: Suitable for diabetic kids or those on a low-sugar diet.

- Low-calorie: It’s nearly calorie-free, making it great for weight management or calorie-conscious families.

- Gentle on teeth: Erythritol doesn’t

contribute to tooth decay, a big plus for children.

Drawbacks:

- Some people can experience digestive upset with sugar alcohols, but erythritol is usually better tolerated than others like xylitol or sorbitol. Always start with small amounts.

Taste profile: Erythritol has a clean, sweet taste and is often mixed with monk fruit or stevia to balance out its sweetness.

It is a good sugar replacement when used in moderation. It’s best to introduce it gradually to ensure it doesn’t cause stomach upset. Discuss this option with your child’s pediatrician as newer research is indicating that it might not be as healthy as it is made to seem.

3. Coconut Sugar- Coconut sugar is made from the sap of the coconut palm and is often considered a more natural alternative to regular sugar.

Benefits:

- Lower glycemic index (GI): Coconut sugar has a lower GI (about 35) than table sugar, meaning it won’t spike blood sugar as rapidly.

- Nutrient content: It retains some nutrients like iron, zinc, calcium, and potassium, though in small amounts.

Drawbacks:

- Still sugar: Although it’s less processed and has a lower GI, coconut sugar is still a form of sugar and contains calories. It’s not carb-free, so it’s not suitable for those needing strict blood sugar control. For those of you on weight loss- this is not a free item. It is still sugar, albeit a healthier form of sugar.

Taste profile: Coconut sugar has a subtle caramel flavor, making it a good fit for baking and adding depth to foods. Kids often enjoy its familiar sweetness. It looks like brown sugar and tastes purely yummy.

Coconut sugar can be a healthier choice compared to regular sugar due to its lower GI and natural sourcing, but it’s not sugar-free. For strict sugar restrictions, other alternatives like monk fruit may be better.

4. Stevia- Stevia is a natural sweetener derived from the leaves of the stevia

plant. Like monk fruit, it is calorie-free and does not affect blood sugar.

Benefits:

- Zero calories: Great for kids who need to avoid sugar but still want sweetness.

- No blood sugar spike: Safe for kids with diabetes or insulin sensitivity.

- Natural origin: It’s a plant-based, nonsynthetic sweetener.

Drawbacks:

- Aftertaste: Some children may detect a slight bitter or licorice-like aftertaste, especially in high concentrations. Stevia is intensely sweet, so only a small amount is needed. It works well in beverages, desserts, and many baked goods. It is a good replacement for kids who need a sugar-free, natural alternative, stevia is an excellent choice, though taste preferences may vary.

5. Xylitol: Another sugar alcohol, xylitol is commonly found in sugar-free gum and candies. It has about the same sweetness as sugar but with fewer calories.

Benefits:

- Good for dental health: Xylitol has been shown to reduce the risk of tooth decay.

- Low glycemic index: It does not spike blood sugar like regular sugar.

Drawbacks:

- Digestive issues: Xylitol can cause bloating or diarrhea if consumed in large amounts, so it should be used cautiously with kids.

- Calories: It’s not calorie-free, though lower than regular sugar.

Taste profile: Xylitol is sweet with no aftertaste, making it one of the most sugar-like substitutes.

It is a good replacement but in moderation. Be cautious of the potential digestive side effects.

Here are some other natural alternatives, but they are not sugar free, rather lower on the glycemic index:

- Maple Syrup: Rich in antioxidants and lower on the glycemic scale, but still sugar-based. Best used sparingly.

- Date Syrup or Date Sugar/Silan: Whole-food based, full of fiber, but still contributes to sugar intake. A good alternative for natural sweetness in small amounts.

NAVIGATING THE PRACTICAL HALACHOS PERTAINING TO KIDNEY DONATION.

BY RABBI ELIEZER ALON. REVIEWED BY HARAV YAAKOV FORCHHEIMER SHLIT"A

Can there be a greater mitzvah than saving a Jewish life? In today's day and age, when donating a kidney has baruch Hashem become a generally safe procedure, many precious Yidden are jumping to fulfill this extraordionary mitzvah. This clear and comprehensive book serves as a necessary guide for all those fortunate to be kidney donors.

PRACTICAL HALACHOS FOR THE ERA OF THE THIRD BEIS HAMIKDASH. "A very important work, teaching us the practical halachos of Taharos that we'll all need to know as soon as Mashicah comes. In my opinion, this sefer should be translated into all languages..." -FROM THE HASKAMAH OF HARAV YAAKOV FORCHHEIMER. WRITTEN BY RABBI SHLOMO BARUCH ALON.

YOMIM TOVIM AT THE BORO PARK CENTER

The Boro Park Center is renowned for their superior service and care, and for hosting exciting events that bring the residents, their families, and the community together. Elul and Tishrei at the Boro Park Center were filled with meaningful celebrations and joyful events that were shared by the residents and their families to create many special memories.

During the year, and especially on Yom Tov, the Boro Park Center focused on family-friendly events and entertainment to bring families together. Throughout the Yomim Tovim and on Chol Hamoed the Center encourages residents’ children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to come to the Center to spend quality time with their parents and grandparents. Many families joined the Center for the delicious, gourmet seudas, and spent Chol Hamoed enjoying various activities and shows together with their grandparents.

In Elul the Boro Park Center held weekly lectures every Sunday that uplifted all the residents. The speakers included choshuve rabbanim such as Rabbi Paysach Krohn, Rebbi Moshe Tovia Lieff, and Rabbi Dovid Goldwasser, who shared inspiration for the Yomim Noraim. For the convenience of the residents, the Center brought down kapparos to their building so that the residents were all easily able to shlug kapparos. Additionally, for the first time since COVID-19, wheelchair-accessible buses were seen lined up outside the center to transport the residents to the water at 1st Avenue and 58th Street for tashlich. They were accompanied by singer Volvy Tauber who inspired them with soul-stirring Yomim Noraim songs. Several local schools were doing tashlich at that time as well, and the children joined in the singing and danced with the residents, some of whom even met their grandchildren.

Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur were meaningfully celebrated at the Center with beautiful, hartzig tefillos led by Rabbi Wajsfeld. Rabbi Mandelbaum, a grandchild of the famed Chazzan R’ Yossele Mandelbaum, led Mussaf on Rosh Hashana and several tefillos on Yom Kippur. The tefillos warmed the hearts of everyone there and set the tone for a hopeful new year ahead.

The festivities continued on Sukkos with a huge, beautifully decorated Sukkah that was filled with laughter and singing from all the families who ate with their grandparents. Chol Hamoed was truly an experience at the Boro Park Center, with non-stop entertainment for the residents and their families. Children and adults enjoyed the activities and shows every day, including face painting, a fun petting zoo, and a fascinating parrot show by the "Parrot Rebbe" that delighted audiences of all ages.

The celebrations reached new heights with a lively concert by Dovid Fleishman and Yossi Eidlisz, whose music filled the Center with warmth and energy. Tanzers and jugglers added to the joyous atmosphere, and their infectious spirit and enthusiasm made the evening a truly unforgettable experience.

Simchas Torah at the Boro Park Center was an experience like no other. Rabbi Wajsfeld led the spirited hakafos, ensuring that every resident got an aliyah and a chance to dance with the Torah. In addition to family members, several people from the community joined the spirited dancing and assisted those who are wheelchair-bound.

As residents, family members, grandchildren, and community members all danced round and round with the Torah, celebrating our heritage in a heartwarming scene, it was easy to see why many residents described the Yomim Tovim at the Center as Gan Eden.

PARSHAS LECH LECHA

DID YOU KNOW? IMAGINE

A Jewish name is powerful. Hashem changed Avraham and Sarah’s names giving them the power to accomplish a new mission in this world. A person’s Jewish name is the channel for G-dly energy in their personal life and is connected with their special mission.

On a Monday morning, even before the sun rises, your mother gives birth to a baby girl! Mazal tov! The baby will receive a Jewish name in Shul when they read from the Torah! You wait eagerly to hear what your parents have decided to name her. As soon as your father comes home from Shul, the words come tumbling out, “Tatty, tatty! What’s our new baby’s name?” He smiles and says, “It’s good you’re asking because I want you to know that a Jewish name is very special, it is how Hashem sends energy into a person. Our baby’s name is Chana.”

DELVING DEEPER

BRING IT HOME

Ask your parent to share something special about where your Jewish name comes from? How can you channel that unique quality to accomplish something special?

The name changes in our Parsha were very specific. Avram stands for Av Aram, “Father of Aram,” symbolizing his influence over the people of the place he came from. But Hashem added a Hey, forming the name Avraham, which stands for Av Hamon Goyim, “Father of Many Nations.” This signified his new role as a leader of all people, teaching them awareness of Hashem. Similarly, Sarai means “ MY princess,” indicating that she was only Avraham’s princess, whereas Sarah means just “princess.” Once her name was changed, Sarah was able to be a princess and have an impact on the whole world. Avraham and Sarah each needed these name changes to help take on their new roles. This shows the power that a Jewish name has. Each of us has a Jewish name that is a channel to bring G-dly energy into our lives and to the special mission that we each have.
