Recap: Chani starts on a medicine and is discharged from the hospital. The doctor calls to say that the medicine was not effective.

CHAPTER 3

I settled into the rough fabric of the waiting room chair, with Chani beside me, waiting our turn to see the gastroenterologist. A frum woman a few seats down smiled at me, and I struck up a conversation.

“Are you also here to see Dr. Brown?” I inquired.

“Yes,” she confirmed. “My Avrumi was diagnosed with Crohn’s about a year ago, and we come for appointments every so often.”

“Oh, my daughter was just diagnosed with Crohn’s too, a few weeks ago. What is it like after a year?” I hoped the answer would be positive.

“Definitely easier than right after he came down with it. There are still ups and downs, of course, but we are much more in the swing of things. Life might not be exactly like it used to, but it does settle down and become more normal.”

I was very relieved to hear that. We ended up exchanging numbers, and I was looking forward to talking to her again. It was comforting to speak to someone in a similar situation, who could understand so many of the difficulties I was going through.

Dr. Brown advised us to start on a new medication. I fervently hoped it would work properly. Chani was really suffering. The physical symptoms of Crohn’s were very difficult to deal with. On top of that, our house was not functioning properly due to all the attention and time I gave to Chani. She was feeling very weak and was in pain a lot, and I also took her to a lot of appointments. It was a full-time job! I was unable to take care of the rest of the family properly, and it was showing.

Zeesy, my oldest, was a lifesaver. She ran the household the whole week I was in the hospital with Chani, taking care of everything from supper to laundry to getting the kids out in the morning, all on top of her intense high school workload. Even now that I was back home, she still pitched in a lot more around the house. I really appreciated her help, and wouldn’t manage without it, but I was also nervous that it was interfering too much with

“I understood why my boys were misbehaving, and I understood why Chani couldn’t handle it”

her high school experience. She had just started ninth grade, and I knew she was still finding her place and adjusting.

My younger boys were acting out more than ever due to the situation. I had received a call from my eight-year-old Shloimy’s rebbi.

“Shloimy is causing too many disruptions in class,” he told me. I explained that we were dealing with a medical issue, and he was sympathetic, but also needed to be able to teach.

“It’s not fair that the rest of the boys lose out on a proper learning environment due to one child. I will consult with the menahel on how to handle the situation. In the meantime, if you can please stress to Shloimy that it is of utmost importance to be on his best behavior during class.”

“I’ll try,” I promised, even though I knew it was futile. It was like convincing a stubborn toddler to do something against his will. There was too much upheaval in Shloimy’s life to expect more of him.

The worst part was that the boys knew how to really aggravate Chani. A combination of her symptoms and side effects from the medication made her super sensitive, and antics she

would normally take in stride were now really bothersome to her. It was a lose-lose situation. I understood why my boys were misbehaving, and I understood why Chani couldn’t handle it. The problem was, I couldn’t do much about either one. I tried to just keep them apart as much as possible, but it wasn’t really doable, being that they lived in the same house together.

My biggest worry, though, was Chani herself. Besides for the illness, the toll it was taking on the rest of her development was hard to watch. She was hopelessly behind in school work, to the point that I decided it wasn’t worth it for her to focus on making things up anytime soon. I was afraid the pressure would be too much-she was still frail and weak! I was also worried about her social life. As nice as her friends were, and as hard as they tried to keep Chani involved, she was too weak to participate in most activities, and she was missing out on a lot. I didn’t want her friends to move on without her, but I knew it was inevitable. I just hoped that she would be able to get back into things very soon, and that she would find her place again easily and quickly. •

ESTHER RAPAPORT

NINE A.M. IS A COMPLETELY FICTIONAL STORY WHICH TAKES PLACE FIFTY YEARS AFTER THE HOLOCAUST.

RECAP OF CHAPTER 44: Mottel Kush has a serious liver disease and needs special medication, which Babbe is afraid to ask Katarina for. She asks Naomi to go to Katarina, as Elky’s close friend, and ask for it. Naomi tells Binyamin to daven for her to be successful. Binyamin goes to daven at his father’s kever, and something that he sees written on the headstone makes him freeze. Dena’s mother-in-law asks her to do something in the office, and it makes a bell go off in Dena’s head.

CHAPTER FORTY FIVE

Nirtzach (Murdered)

“Binyamin leaned over the headstone, nearly pressing his face to the ground, as he passed a finger over each letter. Nun. Reish. Tzaddi. Ches. The ink was long dry, and he had no way of knowing if the word had been written two days ago, a month ago, or more. The last time he’d been here, on Tatte’s yahrtzeit, it wasn’t there.

Who had taken the pains to write this on the side of Tatte’s matzeivah? Was it someone who wanted to convey a message of sorts and was afraid of it being discovered, or did it just express strong pain?

Binyamin sat down on the ground, leaning his head on the large, rectangular stone. He was supposed to be davening. Naomi had asked him to. But his lips were dry. Who knew what had happened to his father? Mamme, maybe. Her fear of speaking about it was telling.

And Babbe. Maybe Dr. Katzburg as well. Apparently one of them had hidden away Tatte’s hospitalization record card. Perhaps the one who it was had received orders from higher up.

Had one of those three women written this word?

Binyamin’s lips curled into an involuntary smile as he envisioned his grandmother leaning over her son-in-law’s headstone and writing accusingly, in heavy black ink: “Nirtzach.”

No, it definitely wasn’t her. Babbe was a deliberate and responsible woman, and she wouldn’t do something so senseless.

Mamme certainly wouldn’t either.

And the doctor? Why in the world?

It must have been someone who was determined to reveal the truth.

Like him.

And it was someone who had clear information, more than he had. He hardly knew anything. Some scattered memories, fragments of words, Mamme’s expression, her ambiguous remarks…

If Tatte had indeed been murdered, there had to be a very weighty reason for it. Had he angered someone from the Nazi hierarchy in the camp to such an extent? Or did they have a reason to be afraid of him?

The first notion didn’t make so much sense. If he would have angered them, his murder would not have become a threatening secret.

So…were they afraid of him? But why? What had he discovered about them?

Perhaps he had found a way to get to Heydrich, Katarina’s father, to report to him about the corruption in the camp management. And Josef and Katarina and their friends from the Wehrmacht had panicked. So was that Tatte’s secret? Had he informed on them?

But Tatte had been a wise man. It was hard to believe that he’d act behind the backs of those directly on top of him. Unless… unless he’d seen something terrible and wasn’t able to keep quiet about it, so he’d threatened to inform on them, or he’d

actually done it.

Binyamin slowly stood up. The picture was forming in his mind, and its details were getting organized in a rather logical way. It was a very real possibility, perhaps the only one of all the others he’d thought of. He’d ask Babbe to fill in all the rest.

Well, not all. He knew he wouldn’t be able to extract from Babbe anything she didn’t want to tell. But she’d understand that he had to know at least something, and she’d share part of the story. He was desperate to know.

And if he would not succeed, he’d look and find the person who’d written this word on the matzeivah.

The person was not particularly smart. True, the word was written on the side that faced the wall, and not too many chose this narrow strip for their walks, but still… There was always the possibility that someone would see it. And that could be dangerous. He’d come again tomorrow, and bring along some cleaning materials.

But before anything, he needed to say a perek of Tehillim for Naomi’s success. She was probably almost finished her conversation with Wangel.

Hauptmann Katarina was sitting on the bench in her meticulously tended garden, sipping something from a tall, red glass. Beside her was a matching plate, with three cookies on it.

“She wanted to speak to you, Mother,” Teresa announced, and disappeared. Katarina turned her gaze to the young woman who was approaching tentatively, and a crooked smile crossed her lips. “Schvirtz!” she said. “What happened? The work day isn’t yet over.”

“That’s right,” Naomi said quietly. “Thank you for agreeing to hear me out now. The others are watching the children right now.”

“If two can manage alone with the children, maybe it’s needless to pay salaries to three girls for this work.” The Hauptmann put her empty cup down on the bench beside her and took a cookie.

“It’s not usually needless,” Naomi replied. “Right now it happens to be a relatively calm time, and because of the urgency of this matter, I was able to leave the children playing under the supervision of two others.”

“What’s the urgency?”

“It’s about Kush.” “Which Kush?”

“The husband of Elky Kush, my friend.”

“Is that the girl who works with Leo Sherer?”

Naomi nodded. “So, what’s with him?”

“He collapsed two days ago, and they cannot seem to get him to recover. The doctor suggested blood tests.”

“If his wife works for Leo Sherer, why didn’t he reach out to us?”

“He prefers to get as little involved as possible in these matters,” Naomi said candidly. “There are lots of requests, lots of needs…he can’t ask for everyone.”

The Hauptmann was quiet for a long moment. Three ducks in a row waddled around near the bench, and she broke the cookie in her hand into little pieces and tossed them to the ground. The ducks attacked the pieces, pushing one another away. Naomi’s eyes followed them.

“What does he do, this Kush?” Katarina asked after two cookie pieces had disappeared down the ducks’ gullets.

“Something in the factory.” Naomi leaned on the nearest tree and wondered for a moment if her father had planted it. “I don’t know exactly.”

“Not someone who can’t be replaced.”

“No person can be replaced.”

“You people have been collapsing this year at a very high rate,” the Nazi grumbled. “Start taking better care of yourselves! Because I know what’s going to be. We’ll start with a blood test for him, and next week three more will need it urgently.”

“It shouldn’t be that way,” Naomi said. “It’s not something contagious. It’s a strange illness that only he has been afflicted with. And last year, you also sent a blood sample to a private lab, and it was a one-time thing that did not lead to other cases.”

“Not other cases, but then the necessary treatment had to be obtained. With Kush it won’t end with the blood test either, right? There’ll be a test, results, and your certified doctor,” she chuckled, “will also want medicine for him, won’t she? Why can’t you just quietly bear the fact that sometimes people get sick, and they die?”

Naomi did not blink. “His family would be very sad. And besides, the bonds between us, the residents of the camp, are very strong. The passing of someone

who, in essence, is healthy, might really affect people’s morale.” Was that what Babbe would have chosen to say?

Katarina took the final cookie from the plate and gnawed at it in silence.

More silence.

Naomi was still as well. The ducks were waddling around them in circles, and only after a few long moments, when they internalized that the third cookie had disappeared, did they move off, quacking loudly and plaintively.

Katarina stood up. “Alright,” she said. “Not that I believe what you’re telling me about strong ties and all that. We know the truth about the discord, but we’ll put it aside for the moment. Let Katzburg give me as many vials as she wants within the next two hours, with no identifying details. I’m going to Vienna this afternoon.”

“Thank you so much, Hauptmann.” Naomi stood straight up, barely allowing herself to breathe.

“Tell your grandmother that even if people here don’t have replacements, as in your view, I see that she already has one.” She smiled that crooked grin again, and Naomi realized that this was meant as a compliment for her, so she smiled politely in return. When she turned around and walked back to the gate, she saw from the window of the manor house a figure plucking a garlic head off the gnarl of herbs hanging on the braided rope, and with the other hand, waving cautiously at her.

The floor outside was dry already, and the kind grandmother had taken her grandson to the playroom to choose a toy that would keep him busy. But Dena was still sitting motionlessly on the couch. When she’d gotten the job at her father-in-law’s office, she’d wondered how much they needed another secretary. She’d explained to herself that in such a big factory, another pair of hands would never be too much, which in essence was what Bentzy had told her. Maybe he had altered the truth so she should have what to do. It was awful to think about it.

And it was even more awful to think that Suri, the other secretary, was in on the plot. Had she also been told that the relative who’d suddenly turned up in the office was a miserable, meek figure who had nothing to do, and was being sent here to keep her busy?

She got up from the couch and walked out of the large living room. She saw her own reflection in the mirror, with the agitation evident in her every move. “I think I’ll head out to the factory now,” she said to her mother-in-law, who was busy helping Shloimy with some huge building blocks.

“Now? So early?”

“Yes, I want to check if…I want to check something in the office.”

“How will you get there?”

WHO’S AFRAID OF THE BIG BAD WOLF?

IF THEY DON'T LEARN THE WAY WE TEACH, WE MUST TEACH THEM THE WAY THEY LEARN Rifka Schonfeld, Director

718.382.5437

rifkaschonfeldsos.com

Closing in all around me, a fear I can't describe.

All shaky and confused, I think I'm going to die.

Thoughts so unsettling are blocking everyone's attempts. When all they try is to help me, I can't make sense of this.

My heart hurts, my head hurts, and crying about it only makes it worse.

Nobody can ever truly understand, and unless you've gone through it, you wouldn't stand a chance.

It's just anxiety, another day of black. You must think that I'm crazy. It's just another panic attack. -Brittany [no last name provided]

Anyone who has experienced a panic attack is familiar with the feelings in the poem above – paralyzing fear, difficulty breathing, dizziness, and nerves. But, while panic attacks are real and extreme, everyone experiences some sort of anxiety on a daily basis. The question is: how much is too much?

As your child grows and learns more about the world, it is natural for him to be hesitant or fearful of new circumstances. In some ways, it is good for your child is afraid – it will make him more cautious and careful. He will take fewer risks that could be potentially dangerous. However, too much anxiety can be debilitating and detrimental.

Because different fears are appropriate at different ages, a great way to assess the level of your child’s anxiety is to be aware of the various ages and stages:

Preschool

Separation anxiety, or a child’s difficulties with being apart from his parents, is not only typical, but developmentally normal for children in preschool. However, this is generally a transient experience and most children can be easily distracted from their anxiety.

Fear of the dark is natural once your child hits the age of two or three. Using night-lights or glow in the dark stars to brighten the room should help your child overcome this fear. If your child refuses to go to sleep or wakes in terror because of the dark, this might be a sign of a larger issue.

Kindergarten – Fifth Grade

Generalized anxiety can sometimes manifest itself in children during the intermediate ages of 9 and 12. A child who worries excessively and obsessively about school performance, the state of the world, his health, and the health of his family members could be exhibiting signs of generalized anxiety disorder. Pay attention to whether his anxiety is controlling him or whether he is controlling his anxiety.

Sixth Grade – High School

Social Phobia is an anxiety disorder that often emerges when children enter their teenage years. Often, children with social phobias will withdraw from social situations and refuse to participate in extracurricular activities. Sometimes, they will refuse to go to school and will only choose to speak to their parents or siblings. They may get very real headaches, stomachaches, or diarrhea on school days -- but the pain comes from their brains, not their bowels.

All Ages

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). PTSD involves anxiety and stress about traumatic events in one’s past. This disorder frequently occurs after violent personal assaults, such as mugging, domestic violence, terrorism, natural disasters, or accidents. Children who experienced an extremely disturbing event might subsequently develop generalized anxiety. PTSD is often triggered by sounds, smells, or sights that remind the sufferer of the trauma.

Some symptoms of PTSD include:

• Anger and irritability

• Guilt, shame, or self-blame

• Substance abuse

• Depression and hopelessness

• Feeling alienated and alone

• Feelings of mistrust and betrayal

• Headaches, stomach problems, chest pain

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). The New York Times defines obsessive-compulsive disorder as “an anxiety disorder in which people have thoughts, feelings, ideas, sensations (obsessions), or behaviors that make them feel driven to do something (compulsions).”

Some examples of OCD are excessive hand-washing to ward off infection or repeatedly checking the locks on the door to ensure that they are secured. Children with OCD often recognize that their behavior is excessive, but cannot stop themselves from their compulsive actions.

The Link Between Anxiety and Depression

There is a connection between childhood anxiety and teenage

depression. Many doctors say that prior to puberty, the equivalent of depression in children is anxiety. The same biochemical issues that children who experience childhood depression deal with are mostly like to lead to depression once children enter puberty.

As a matter of fact, kids who have anxiety as children are more likely to have teen depression. About half of depressed teenagers had a childhood anxiety disorder and of those teens who suffer from anxiety disorders and depression, 85% of them had their anxiety disorder first.

Parents: Be Part of the Solution

Marianna Csoti, in her book, School Phobia, Panic Attacks, and Anxiety in Children, outlines the different ways that parents can help their children overcome anxiety:

• Do not speak about the anxiety in front of your children. Parents should avoid discussing their child’s worries in front of him. Hearing about his own problems can often cause more anxiety and result in seeing his problems as larger than they are.

• Do not introduce your own worries. Parents should try to remove any unnecessary pressure from the child, as he needs to be protected from stress regardless of how the parents feel.

• Reassure your child. Your child should be told that his fears will not always be with and that he will eventually feel better once he gets over the part he dreads.

• Listen to your child’s anxieties. Allow your child to express his fears even if they seem silly to you. This does not mean that you have to do “give in” to his every whim; rather you are proving to your child that you are aware of his suffering.

• Create a gentle start to the day. If your child struggles with going to school, wake him early in a gentle manner (with music or cuddles) to allow him some time to adjust to the reality of going to school.

• Stick to regular routines. Even though the summers and vacations have their own schedules, sticking to the same bedtime and morning wake-up throughout the summer and school year will allow your child to feel more secure.

• Seek a professional opinion. Anxiety is a serious issue that cannot always be solved by a caring and capable parent. If you feel that your child’s anxiety is affecting you and your family, seek a professional opinion.

BE FIT WITH BENEFIT

QMy 12-year-old recently started drinking coffee. It was so funny seeing her gravitate to a drink geared to adults. Is this concerning? Should I not be allowing her to drink coffee?

AWhen it comes to children drinking coffee, parents naturally have questions. Coffee is a common beverage in many households, and its effects on children aren’t always widely discussed. If your 12-year-old has started drinking coffee, there are some things to consider regarding the health impact, safe consumption, and potential concerns. While coffee isn’t typically recommended for children, there isn’t a strict rule against it. The key issues to consider are caffeine’s effects on a young person’s developing body and the possible added sugars and creamers that can turn a simple cup of coffee into an unhealthy drink.

According to health guidelines, children ages 12 and under should generally avoid caffeine, or at least keep their intake very low. For adolescents over 12, a moderate limit of 85-100 mg per day is often suggested. One small (8 oz) cup of coffee has about 95 mg of caffeine, which already meets this suggested limit for teenagers.

What are potential concerns for children that drink coffee?

1. Sleep Disruption- Caffeine Sensitivity: Children are more sensitive to caffeine, which can affect their sleep even hours after they drink coffee. Good sleep is crucial for growth, memory, and mood, especially in kids and teens who are still developing. Caffeine can prevent deep, restful sleep and increase wakefulness at night, leading to tiredness and difficulty focusing during the day.

2. Bone Health and Growth Concerns - Calcium Interference: Some studies have suggested that caffeine can slightly interfere with calcium absorption. Although the effect is minimal, it’s worth noting because calcium is vital for bone growth in children. A small cup of coffee may not be harmful, but higher caffeine levels could, over time, interfere with optimal bone health. There is no strong evidence that caffeine stunts growth. However, if caffeine affects sleep or nutrition, it could indirectly influence growth by impacting overall health and development.

3. Increased Anxiety and Heart Rate- Anxiety:

Caffeine is a stimulant, which can increase heart rate and may lead to jitteriness or anxiety, particularly in children who aren’t used to it. Though the caffeine in a small coffee may not be a concern, it’s important to ensure that caffeine intake doesn’t go beyond the recommended levels, as too much caffeine can overstimulate the heart.

One of the biggest concerns with coffee for kids isn’t just the caffeine – it’s also the sugar and creamer that are often added to it. A cup of plain black coffee has no sugar and almost no calories. However, many young people don’t drink coffee black and instead add flavored syrups, whipped cream, sugar, or creamer.

These added ingredients can significantly increase sugar intake, leading to weight gain, blood sugar spikes, and dental health concerns.

Given these factors, if you allow your 12-year-old to drink coffee, it’s advisable to keep it to a small amount – ideally half a cup or less per day, and without added sugars or high-fat creamers. This could mean an occasional small cup on special days or a few sips instead of a full cup. The rule in my house is that if my teen wants a coffee, it has to be sugar free, and not more than once a day.

For alternatives, consider lower-caffeine options like:

Decaf Coffee: This has only a small amount of caffeine, allowing for the taste of coffee with much less of a stimulant effect.

Herbal Teas: Most are caffeine-free, offering various flavors and health benefits.

Flavored Milk or Hot Chocolate: These can feel like a treat without the high caffeine levels of coffee. Keep an eye on sugar here, too, but they may offer a more balanced option.

Ultimately, a 12-year-old drinking coffee occasionally, in moderation, isn’t harmful, but it’s wise to keep an eye on her overall caffeine, sugar intake, and sleep patterns.

2. THE NUGGET

Adam comes from the word “Adamah” – earth – because Hashem created Adam from the earth. But it is also related to the word “Adameh” in the phrase “Adameh L’elyon” – “I will be like the One Above.” This shows that even though a person is made of earth, and therefore inclined to self-centeredness, his soul gives him the ability to rise up and be like his maker, Hashem. This is achieved through the work of Torah and Mitzvos.

4. FUN FACT

Adam was originally supposed to live for 1,000 years! But when he saw that the great soul of Dovid Hamelech was only supposed to live for 7 hours, he gave 70 years of his life to him.

1. LIFE STORY SNIPPET

Adam was the very first human on this earth! Hashem created him from the earth and then blew a soul of life into him. He was created as tall as the heavens, but after the Cheit Eitz Ha’daas Hashem diminished his size. He and his wife, Chava, had 3 children: Kayin, Hevel, and Sheis.

3. BRINGING IT DOWN

We each have natural tendencies, such as laziness, anger, or arrogance. These are our earthly “Adamah” parts. But we also have a Neshama, and this allows us to refine and elevate these parts so that we are “Adameh L’elyon” – like Hashem. For example, if you feel you are not in the mood to get up and Daven, you can work to overcome this dullness. You can take a moment to listen in to your higher self, your Neshama. It wants to do the right thing and serve Hashem!

5. QUESTION TO CONSIDER

Think of one “Adamah” type of Middah you have. What is one small step you can take to overcome it?

WORLD STAMP PAINTING ADAM

Align the printed template and white cardstock together and tape them with a few pieces of masking on the short, left side. Take a white cardstock and measure a quarter of an inch on each corner, mark it with a short stroke. Connect all the strokes creating a frame on the paper.

Paint & press the rest of the continents. Africa – yellow, Greenland – dark blue, North America – light green, South

Using the same technique, paint the water light blue and the background yellow. Leave some space around the edges. Close the papers & press. Then open the papers and let it dry.

Take off the template and cut off the edges where it’s marked. Place doublesided tape on the back side of your painting. Stick it to the blue sheet.

Your world stamp painting is ready! 8 2 3 6

Open both sheets with the white one on the right. Paint Europe (top left) with purple, then close the papers (put the white paper on top) and gently press on the painted part. Open the papers.

Place double-sided tape on all edges of the back side of the blue sheet and stick it to the cardboard.
