BCTV Presents Documentary on Former Downtown Wasteland
Annual Atlantic Plunge This Weekend KENNEBUNK The 20th annual Atlantic Plunge will take place at Gooch’s Beach, Kennebunk at 11 a.m. to raise money for Caring Unlimited’s programs. In-person par-
BERWICK In 2008, Prime Tanning, the town’s largest employer, closed after 70 years and left 11 acres of tired industrial buildings abandoned in the center of town; the land beneath was filled with hazardous wastes. Town officials and a group of volunteers, Envision Berwick, worked to get the site cleaned up and to find a way to revitalize the property. Berwick Community Television has been working for almost a year on a documentary video of those efforts. The video includes interviews of town officials and volunteers, former Prime employees and owners, and historic photos and video. The documentary,
“Old Town, New Village,” will be presented on BCTV channels beginning January 2. The Town of Berwick has succeeded in attracting a developer, Great Falls Construction of Gorham to return the property to being a vital town center. Berwick Community Television is completely funded by franchise fees paid through Comcast cable subscriptions. BCTV provides public, educa-
tional, and government programs that are informative and community-driven. “Old Town, New Village,” will be shown on BCTV Channel 2 and Channel 95 in Berwick beginning January 2. Worldwide, the documentary will be available through the BCTV website, www.berwicktv.org, and through the BCTV Facebook page and YouTube channel. (Photo from Envision Berwick’s Facebook page)

USS Santa Fe Sub Safely Undocked at PNSY KITTERY Completion of maintenance tasks on the USS Santa Fe, a Los Angeles class nuclear-powered fast attack submarine, took place recently at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. The Santa Fe and her crew of 16 officers and 127 enlisted personnel arrived at the shipyard on August 15, 2019. Completion of this key event continues the critical path to deliver Santa Fe but also maintains the vital construction timeline for the Dry Dock #1 super flood basin at the shipyard. The facility construction projects
around Dry Dock #1 directly support the Navy’s Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program designed to improve the efficiency of the naval shipyards to better execute maintenance and modernization of ships and submarines to provide the Navy the nation needs. The submarine is powered by the General Electric S6G pressurized water reactor and can reach a surface speed of 20 knots (23 mph; 37 km/h) and a submerged speed of 20 knots (23 mph; 37 km/h) and is fitted with Tomahawk and Harpoon missiles.

District Rotary Club Recognizes Maine CDC Leader Recycling Returns to Kennebunkport
SOUTHERN MAINE The Brunswick Rotary Club #7780 was honored to recognize Dr. Nirav Shah, Director of the Maine CDC, as a Paul Harris Fellow at a weekly club meeting conducted virtually on Monday, December 14. Dr. Shah’s significant contribution to the well-being and health of Mainers during the ongoing pandemic merited special recognition. ny, and provided a recap of Dr. Shah’s career and professional experiences that prepared him for his current role. A neighbor of Dr. Shah’s, Bulliner shared that she frequently observed him walking or jogging with his phone firmly held to his ear, demonstrating the dedication and focus he has maintained during the current healthcare crisis. Dr. Shah noted that the day of the meeting was significant; it was the day the first doses of the recently-approved vaccine arrived in Maine – hopefully, the beginning of the end of a crisis that has impacted all aspects of life tremendously. Peggy Bellanger, Rotary District 7780 Governor, offered that Rotary Clubs in the district could assist during the vaccination process. Dr. Shah thanked the Rotarians for the recognition and accepted the award on behalf of not just himself but of the entire

Shah, MD, JD, was appointed as the Director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Maine CDC). He came with broad experience in public health, most recently as the Director of the Illinois Department of Public Health, where he implemented key initiatives to address the state’s opioid crisis, reduce maternal and infant mortality, and reduce childhood lead poisoning. KENNEBUNKPORT In September of 2019, Kennebunkport suspended curbside recycling collection due to high, unbudgeted, projected costs in times of uncertain recycling-market conditions. At that time, the Board of Selectman appointed a Solid Waste/ Recycling Committee (SWC) to study the possible mechanisms and associated costs to restart the Town’s recycling program. Over a nine-month period, the SWC visited and studied existing recycling programs in southern Maine and engaged and globe on improving the delivery of healthcare. Earlier in his career, he worked for the Ministry of Health in Cambodia where his work included investigating and managing disease outbreaks as an epidemiologist. He received both medical and law degrees from the University of Chicago, and studied economics at Oxford University. The Paul Harris recognition award, named after the Rotary Club founder, acknowledges individuals who contribute or who have contributions made in their name of $1,000 to the Rotary Foundation. The first non-Rotarian to be chosen as a Paul Harris Fellow was Mother Teresa in 1979. The Brunswick Rotary Club represents District 7780 which covers from just over the border of New Hampshire to Rumford in mid-Maine. For details, visit www.brunswickmainerotary.org.

with Ecomaine (single-stream recycling plant located in Portland) to work out the most effective and economical solutions to our recycling goals. On January 9, 2020, the SWC presented recommendations to the Board of Selectman, who, by a unanimous vote, approved the re-start of curbside single-stream recycling in July of 2020. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic and the financial uncertainty of the tourist-based town income, the decision was made to postpone the re-start of recycling until January 2021. Help welcome back recycling to Kennebunkport on Saturday, January 9, 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. at the Public Works Facility (adjacent to Rotary Park) drivethru garage, 105 Beachwood Avenue, Kennebunkport. There will be free recycling bins to the first 100 households as well as giveaways and raffles from Ecomaine. For more information, go to www.kennebunkportrecycle. com or call 207-967-1609.

King Scores Energy Victories in Year-End Spending Bill WASHINGTON, D.C. The year-end appropriations bill, which passed Congress by veto-proof, bipartisan margins earlier this week, included significant provisions sponsored by U.S. Senator Angus King (I-ME). The legislation includes the most sweeping energy package passed by Congress in over a decade, which will enhance the potential of renewable energy, support Maine’s forest products industry, reduce consumer energy costs, and significantly advance the nation’s fight against climate change. Energy provisions led and supported by Senator King in the year-end legislation include: Support for energy storage research. Knowing the energy storage is the key to unlocking the full potential of renewable energy, Senator King has been a vocal advocate for research, development, and commercialization of this technology. The legislation includes Sen-

Investments in renewable energy. Expanding America’s investments in renewable energy are key to our country’s future leadership. This package includes $2.86 billion for the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy and $427 million for ARPA-E, which has supported research initiatives at the University of Maine; Senator King has long supported both programs. Tax incentives for renewable energy development. The package offers incentives to support offshore wind development, which Senator King has supported through cosponsoring legislation to extend the offshore tax credit through 2027, and maintains a 26% investment tax credit for solar energy through 2022. Opportunities for forest products industry. Senator King’s Biomass Thermal Utilization Act was also included in the package, which incentivizes the use of energy efficient wood boilers, stoves, and heaters in homes that can reduce energy costs and promote the sustainable use of forest products from Maine. Reauthorizes energy efficiency initiatives. The legislation includes Senator King’s Combined Heat and Power Support Act, which reauthorizes the combined heat and power technical assistance program that has assisted Maine businesses in lowering their energy costs and become more energy

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~
Dear Computer Lady, I want to know how to change the color of my mouse pointer. Thank you, Helen Dear Helen, In the Control Panel, you can select a set of pointers to use. Some of the available schemes use different colors to make the pointer more visible. Let’s get started: 1. Click on “Start” and then “Settings” (The small gear icon just above the start button); 2. In the Settings window, click on “Ease of Access”; 3. Under, “Ease of Access” click on “Mouse Pointer”; 4. Here you can change the size and color of your pointer; 5. The changes will be made as soon as you make a selection; 6. Close the Settings window when you are finished. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Why can the CPU keep
thousands of files and how many types of files can the CPU keep? Robert Dear Robert, This isn’t the type of question that I normally answer, but I thought this might give me the chance to explain some basic parts of your computer and what they do. The CPU, or Central Processing Unit, in your computer is actually the “brain” of your computer that does all the calculations and processing of your files. Think of it like an adding machine, it does the math, but you have to input the numbers you want processed. The CPU itself does not keep any files. It gets the files that it works with from temporary storage called, RAM. RAM, however does not keep files when the computer is

turned off, instead the long term storage on your computer, the hard drive, is where your files are stored. Some people refer to the entire computer, including the hard drive, as a CPU. Your computer can keep thousands, if not millions, of files on the hard drive. The only limit to how many files can be stored on the hard drive is the size of the drive itself. There are thousands of types of files that can be stored on your hard drive, some of them are files that you might recognize like pictures, documents and music. Many more files are types that the computer operating system (usually Windows) needs to run. These are files that you and I will never need to access ourselves, but every time you turn your computer on, they are used in the basic running of the computer. I hope this helps you understand the workings of your computer a little bit more. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I read all of your articles and find them very helpful and written for the non-technical minds. Thank you. I have a question about Facebook tags. Is there a Facebook setting so that I will not be included in my friends’ tags and still follow my friends? Thank you, Linda Dear Linda, When your friends make a post, or post a picture, they can tag you by mentioning your name, or tagging you in the picture. While there doesn’t appear to be a setting to stop your
friends from tagging you (sometimes simply asking them to not tag you will be the best solution) you can turn on a setting in Facebook that will allow you to manually approve posts that you have been tagged in before they show up on your timeline. It is important to note that this will only stop them from showing up on your timeline, not other people’s timelines. There is also a setting where you can control who can see posts and photos that you have been tagged in. Both these settings are found in the same place. 1. Click on the small triangle located at the top-right corner of your Facebook page; 2. Click on “Settings” in the drop down menu; 3. When the Settings page loads, click on “Timeline and Tagging” in the left column; 4. The first timeline setting has a section where you can review posts friends tag you in before they post to your timeline. Just turn this setting on; 5. In the next section, where it says, “who can see things on my timeline?” you can change the settings to “Only Me” so that others can’t see the posts. You can change as many settings as you want in this section, in fact if you change everything to “Only Me” you will be almost invisible on Facebook. I hope this helps. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have lost my list for shortcuts to the 1/2, 1/4 degree, and etc. I had it taped to my computer desk when I moved they re-

~ News ~ New Park Benches Installed at Boat Basin ELIOT The Eliot Boat Basin, known locally as “Dead Duck”, on the banks of the Piscataqua River, is a hub of activity in the spring, summer and fall, with boats being launched and pulled out, hikers exploring the walking trails, families enjoying the playground, and picnicking at the covered tables. There’s also a pavilion for community events. However, the Eliot Aging in Place Committee (AIP) realized there were few places to just sit, watch the activity, and enjoy the surroundings. The committee applied for and received a 2020 AARP Challenge Grant to purchase and install five park benches. It was a community effort with volunteers putting the benches
together, transporting them to the Boat Basin, and the Public Works department installing them. Several benches are located at the waterfront, others are in the playground area. They all carry an attractive plaque documenting the
AARP Grant. The placement of the benches will enhance the beauty of this public park and create a more vibrant Eliot Boat Basin. The benches are an invitation for anyone, but particu-
larly for older adults, to walk safely, socialize, enjoy nature, and observe the river without fear of vehicular traffic. They’re also easily accessible, furthering AIP’s commitment to build on Eliot’s strengths to enhance residents’ ability to

Stage House Inn Brings Renewed Joy to Downtown SOUTH BERWICK The new Stage House Inn has lifted spirits in downtown South Berwick as the old Bible Speaks Church building received a facelift this year – restoring it to its mid-1800s look. The inn is a new extension of the Flynn-family-owned Outlook Farm which includes the Red Barn, Outlook Tavern, and the Links at Outlook Golf Course – to fill the need for wedding and event guest sleeping quarters. Located at 224 Main Street on the corner of Paul Street, the Stage House Inn has 20 guest rooms, a private function space, and a restaurant open to the public. All are welcome at the charming and historical facility – locals as well as travelers. The Stage House Inn has changed hands many times since the 1800s. The building was originally built as the Winthrop family home in 1798. The Sarah Frost Hall provides a function space named after the feisty woman who opened Frost Tavern in this same location in 1815. She catered to stagecoach passengers traveling between Boston and Portland, and entertained President James Monroe in 1817 and General Lafayette in 1825. The room is still furnished with the original fireplace mantel and bricks, and salvaged tin wainscoting. After 1848, the building was purchased by Josiah Paul and operated under the name Paul’s Hotel. He was not only an innkeeper, but also deputy sheriff and coroner, so the defendant of a big murder case stayed at the hotel while on trial. Dufour - Cocktails & Provisions is the bar and parlor within the inn, open Wednesday-Saturday at 4 p.m., and offering brunch every Sunday 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. starting January 10. The namesake stems from the French designer Joseph Dufour, but also translates to “from the oven”. The Parish of St. Michael’s purchased the property in 1909 but became a sanctuary for a small group of the Sisters of St. Joseph who were fleeing France. They then opened St. Rose’s School for the French-Canadian children of immigrant millworkers. The space honors its French history by including Dufour’s famous “Les Vues D’Italie” panoramic wallpaper that was first hung on the parlor walls in the 1820s, and has now been painstakingly restored. The decora-

Church pews have become restaurant seating, and a breathtaking, locally-made, stained-glass window sheds light between bar and parlor. By 1920 the Sisters owned the grounds, and the Academy of St. Joseph educated female day-students and borders until it closed in 1971. Bible Speaks Church occupied the property until it was purchased by the Flynns in 2016.
The inn’s website implored, “Wherever you are while at the Stage House Inn, take a moment to look around and enjoy the special restorations we’ve made. We welcome you to experience the strong bond of the past and present with our thoughtfullydesigned ambience, cocktails, and provisions.” For more information, call 207-704-0516 and visit www. stagehouseinn.com for the inn, or 207-704-0510 and www.dufouronmain.com for Dufour.

FINANCE & CAREER
Financial New Year’s Resolutions During Pandemic Although many are eager to put 2020 behind them, the usual new year optimism may be subdued because of the pandemic. Even so, the start of 2021 is a perfect opportunity to refocus personal finances after an unprecedented year. “While additional government aid may come at some point in the new year, it remains uncertain,” said Michael Sullivan, a personal financial consultant with Take Charge America, a national nonprofit credit and student loan counseling agency.
“That’s why, as with all new year’s resolutions, it’s important to establish realistic, actionable financial goals that will set you up for success.” Sullivan shares five steps to meet financial goals in 2021: Reassess budget: Start the new year by reevaluating your income, expenses and general spending habits. Is it time to reallocate funds to new line items? Can you save by canceling subscriptions or renegotiating bills? Reassess your budget to ensure your money is working for you rather than against you. Find side income: Despite
pandemic challenges, there are numerous ways to earn extra cash including part-time or gig work, though you’ll have to gauge any pandemic-related risks with any in-person options. Gig options include TaskRabbit, where you get paid to perform any number of tasks or chores, as well as other well-known services like Lyft or DoorDash. For contactless options try selling gently used items on Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, eBay or Etsy. (Finally) overcome credit card debt: Taking a new look at your budget and income op-
$25M to Unemployment Trust Fund AUGUSTA Amid record nationwide unemployment caused by the pandemic, Governor Janet Mills announced that her Administration has dedicated an additional $25 million in CARES Act Coronavirus Relief Funds (CRF) to Maine’s unemployment insurance trust fund. The investment, which builds on the Mills Administration’s previous allocation of
$269 million, is expected to significantly reduce an anticipated employer tax increase for 2021 while ensuring benefits are available for those who need them. “Maine businesses and workers are already confronting unprecedented economic hardships caused by the pandemic,” said Governor Janet Mills. “While Congress has not provided enough direct aid to states to prevent an increase in

unemployment taxes next year, we will put every available resource we can towards protecting Maine people from feeling its effects.” State unemployment insurance is paid to eligible Maine people through the state unemployment trust fund, which is funded through employer taxes. Employers pay unemployment taxes on up to $12,000 in wages for each of their employees during the calendar year. The amount of tax employers pay is determined by a rate based in large part on what the trust fund balance is on September 30 and its ratio to previous years. This second infusion of CRF funds brings the trust fund’s balance closer to parity with previous years, thereby minimizing the impact on employer’s unemployment insurance taxes. Without the infusion of nearly $300 million dollars from the Mills Administration, which is approximately 25 percent of Maine’s CRF funds, the Maine See TRUST page 16...

portunities can free up more money to allocate toward credit card balances. You can also call your creditors directly to see if you qualify for hardship plans, which may offer relief with fees or interest rates. For an action plan and personalized guidance, you can try a free credit counseling session with a nonprofit organization. Reevaluate student loans: Payments on federal student loans will resume in February after forbearance was extended to Jan. 31. If you’re unable to afford your payments, contact your servicer to discuss options. You also can visit Studentaid. gov to apply for an Income-Driven Repayment plan. Nonprofit student loan counseling agencies also can provide assistance. Rebuild emergency fund:
In 2021, aim to rebuild your emergency fund, which likely took a hit in 2020. Start by making small cuts in monthly spending and divert those funds to your savings. Throughout the year, set aside any extra cash you receive, like holiday or birthday gifts. Set up any gig work or part-time job earnings to be automatically deposited into your emergency fund. Use the same approach if you’re entitled to a tax refund to give a boost to your savings. Aim to save three to six months’ worth of expenses in your emergency fund. in the best possible way. Dr. Evangeline Thibodeau, Infectious Disease specialist at York Hospital, adds: “We have all been working tirelessly for the past nine to ten months fighting this pandemic, and now the end is in sight. Dr. Jennifer Cutts, Chief Medical Officer and Interim CEO concurred, “To be sure, this is an exciting day for all of us at York Hospital. Vaccinations will be offered in a thoughtful, staggered manner in order to prevent entire workgroups from experiencing potential side effects that could impact staffing. All of the available data show that the Moderna vaccine, which is nearly 95% effective, is safe. While some individuals have had mild side effects after receiving it, no serious side effects were reported during the course of the vaccine’s clinical trials. At this time, the hospital is not yet vaccinating patients. Adults 65 years and older and high-risk individuals could be eligible for the vaccine in the coming months. A second phase of distribution for all other patients is anticipated to start in the spring. With COVID-19 cases continuing to rise in local communities and across the country, even when vaccination of patients and members of the public begins, the Hospital advises that it’s critical to continue wearing masks,
social distancing and washing your hands frequently. While continuing to vaccinate employees, York Hospital’s full range of services is available to care for all in the community. It’s important that patients do not delay medical care. Walk-In care is available seven days a week, and emergency room with recently opened respiratory bay is available for those experiencing COVID-like symptoms. The hospital continues to perform surgeries and procedures (with some temporary exceptions for elective outpatient procedures requiring post procedural admittance). For details about the vaccine recommendations, process, and side effects, visit www. cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019ncov/vaccines/.

$111,603 for Mental Health Resources at Sheriff’s Office WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King announced that the York County Sheriff’s Office has been awarded $111,603 to improve the delivery of and access to mental health and wellness services for law enforcement officers. This funding was awarded through the U.S. Department of Justice’s Law Enforcement Mental Health and Wellness Act Program. “As we combat the COVID-19 pandemic, communities across Maine continue to rely on local law enforcement to help keep them safe, and they deserve our ongoing support,” said Senators Collins and King in a joint statement. “This critical investment will help ensure that the York County Sheriff’s Office has the resources it needs to provide law enforcement officers with services that promote their wellbeing.” This funding will support the York County Sheriff Office’s York County Peer Support Project, an effort aimed at expanding mental health resourc-
es to officers through training and technical assistance; demonstration projects; implementation of promising practices related to peer mentoring, mental health, and wellness; and suicide prevention programs. Last year, the Supporting and Treating Officers in Crisis Act that was introduced by Senators Collins, Josh Hawley (RMO), and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) was signed into law. The legislation restores grant funding for law enforcement support services and allows grant recipients to use funds to establish suicide-prevention programs and mental health services for law enforcement officers. To date, Senators Collins and Angus King have announced more than $4.4 million in funding through the CARES Act for Maine law enforcement to respond to the pandemic.
York Hospital’s New Respiratory Clinic Offers Increased Safety for Treating Patients
$7.8M to Mitigate Spread of COVID WASHINGTON, D.C. In October, Senators Susan Collins and Angus King announced that Maine had received $2,287,725 to purchase personal protective equipment (PPE), medical supplies, and equipment for essential workers to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19. This December, Maine has also received an additional $5,570,755 to reimburse the purchase of personal protective equipment (PPE) including KN95 surgical masks for frontline responders, as well as disposable non-sterile isolation gowns and disposable isolation suits. This funding was awarded to the Maine Department of Administrative and Financial Services through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). “In the face of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it is imperative that health care workers across Maine are properly equipped to treat individuals who contract the virus and prevent further spread,” See FEMA page 16...
A new respiratory clinic has opened at York Hospital, located adjacent to the Hospital’s Emergency Department on the main campus in York. This is the latest addition in our continuing efforts to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses. The new service provides another option for isolating patients arriving at the hospital with less severe COVID-19 symptoms. This area has a dedicated, full-time team that includes ER/walk-in providers and nursing staff, and allows for seamless transition to a treatment room for more critical cases when further assessment by the ER team is required. The respiratory clinic is also the designated location for infusion therapies, as we continue to advance our COVID-19 treatment capabilities for patients who are confirmed positive and meet very specific criteria. York Hospital continues to focus on providing a safe place for patients to come for all their healthcare needs. For more information and resources about COVID-19, please visit yorkhospital.com/covid-19-updates/. Safe Haven Humane Society
WELLS Since this is the final feature of 2020, we want to thank everyone for their love and support of Safe Haven, beginning with Carol Brennan and her talented Weekly Sentinel team. They’ve provided the voice our kitties need to promote kindness to all animals, and to help end feline abuse and homelessness. Thank you all and a loving remembrance of the late Mark Wilcox, our wonderful introduction to The Sentinel newspaper so many years ago. 2020 is nearly over. Finally. We know that 2021 will be another challenge, but at least this year tipped us what to expect. Despite so many pandemic-related delays, Safe Haven moved into our new Cattail Farm store and kitty farmhouse. We even came out ahead, with 20 new volunteers to support Cattail Farm, our adoption center and our foster program. What a welcome addition to our existing hard-

working teams. Helping hands are always welcome! I can’t say enough about our volunteers. They give their hearts and sweat to Safe Haven and our kitty residents. It’s so fulfilling to see strangers come together, bringing their own unique talents and hard work, and become a team! They keep our no-kill mission strong and moving forward. They’re the ones who feed and scoop and medicate and comfort our felines, trap and rescue the homeless, do the laundry, and add the glow and sparkle to our shelter and new farmhouse. This year was amazing, watching our thrift shop team turn the empty barn on Route 1 into a beautiful shopping emporium, whose sole mission is to raise the money we so desperately need to pay our vet bills, the mortgage, utilities, etc. They empower Safe Haven’s mission of saving lives. Safe Haven couldn’t keep running smoothly without all our friends and supporters. Your generosity, kindness, and helping hands make it possible to keep up with our vet bills. Medical costs have nearly doubled. The pandemic made

Let’s try to assist and educate neglectful people who need to find their way toward living a more compassionate life. The kittens in the photo are some of Miso’s 5-month old babies. Miso’s Muppets are available for visits to those approved for adoption. To get approved, just apply online at www.safehavenhumanesociety.org. Once approved, you’ll be called to visit, if the kittens are still available. If the Muppets are already placed, your approved application will be kept on file for the next available young kitties we have. Our adoption fee for all cats and kittens is $100, and a home visit is a part of our adoption process. We place our cats in homes with a history of spoiling them totally rotten. It’s what we do. Happy New Year!
...TRUST from page 10 Department of Labor estimates that employer unemployment taxes in 2021 likely would have more than doubled. There are approximately 45,000 employers in Maine that pay into the trust fund. The Maine Department of Labor (MDOL) has paid out more than $1.55 billion in benefits between March 15 and September 19, including more than $433 million in State funds with the rest coming from federal programs. MDOL has also paid out more than $78 million through the FEMA Lost Wage Assistance program. The official tax rate will be calculated by late October and announced at that time. Each individual employer’s tax rate will be calculated in December. As of September 28, 19 other states have had to borrow $33.4 billion from the federal government to pay benefits since the start of the pandemic.

Senators Collins and King said in a joint statement. “This important funding will provide necessary PPE to our frontline workers, helping to ensure the safety of communities throughout Maine.” In the midst of the pandemic, Senators Collins and King have fought hard to secure federal funding for PPE for Maine. Last month, the Senators announced that Maine received nearly $2.3 million for such medical supplies. In April, the Senators urged Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar and FEMA Administrator Peter Gaynor to help Maine more easily access PPE secured by the COVID19 Supply Chain Stabilization Task Force. As of November 13, FEMA has obligated more than $163 million in federal support to Maine, and as of November 18, FEMA and the Strategic National Stockpile have provided Maine with more than 1,498,514 gloves, 43,525 face shields, 41,290 surgical gowns, 204,393 surgical masks, and 566,775 N95 respirators.
military and have been wounded defending our nation should always have free access to our national parks and recreational areas – the American land they fought to protect,” said Senator Collins. “From Acadia to Denali, and everywhere in between, this law will ensure that disabled veterans can continue to access our country’s national treasures for outdoor recreation, which can help heal both the visible and invisible wounds of war.” “This new law is just one way to show our appreciation for our veterans, who have sacrificed so much for this country. Access to our parks and lands is helpful to many veterans with rehabilitation, so I’m very happy to see our bipartisan effort to ensure that access – free of charge – become law,” said Senator Shaheen. “We owe our veterans the very best when they come home to help them build safe, healthy and happy lives. I look forward to building on the bipartisan spirit that gave way to this new law so we can continue to deliver for our veterans.”

Bernier-Gelinas FUNERAL HOME
Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

bereaved’s feelings in the patterns of community support which are psychologically beneficial. Flowers, however, express the inexpressible – they are symbolic.
missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists.
recording coach and music arranger (DareStar Productions) in New York City. Erne had a passion for automobiles. His first car was a Crosley, an American manufacturer specializing in sub-compact cars. During college years, he restored his ’39 Pontiac convertible bright red and later, was a fan of the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia. He would have enjoyed being a gentleman farmer but was too busy with acting and cars! He had a keen interest in homeopathic and cures. ~ Sports & Classifieds ~ Wotton Recognized as “Greatest High School Football Coach”
Coach Rod Wotton’s last game was in 2010 at St. Thomas Aquinas High, shown here with quarterback Jack MacNevin. (Courtesy photo)
YORK COUNTY The Bangor Daily News recently announced Rod Wotton as “Maine’s Greatest High School Football Coach of All Time.” Using online voting by readers, he won 76.6 percent of the vote out of 32 candidates. As football coach at Marshwood High School when it was in Eliot, Bangor Daily News summarized it best when
Land Trust Opens 220-Acre Fuller Forest Preserve YORK York Land Trust has officially opened Fuller Forest Preserve on Bartlett Road, marking the culmination of efforts to turn this 220-acre working forest into a publicly accessible nature preserve. The property, which opened to visitors on December 19, includes a 0.75-mile trail, vernal pools, streams, woodlands, a parking area and an educational kiosk. The land trust plans to expand the trail system to extend more than two miles in the spring of 2021. It is eager to provide this new outlet for outdoor exploration, particularly given the rise in preserve visitation during the pandemic. In addition to offering public access to nature, the land continues to function as a working forest that is selectively harvested and managed to encourage a diversity of tree species and ages. The land trust is also actively controlling invasive plant species to allow more native plants to grow, with the goal of improving the forest’s longterm health and enhancing habitat for birds and other wildlife. This project has long been a conservation priority of the Mt. Agamenticus to the Sea Conservation Initiative (MtA2C), an effort to connect conserved
lands in southern York County spanning from the Tatnic Hills in Wells to the coast of Kittery. The property abuts Kittery Land Trust’s (KLT) 170-acre Norton Preserve, which also neighbors KLT’s 50-acre Brave Boat Headwaters Preserve. Together, these properties link up with the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge, and create a contiguous block of more than 1,300 acres of conserved land. The Fuller Forest originally belonged to the late Henry Fuller and Marion Fuller Brown, who acquired it shortly after World War II along with Ram’s Head Farm on Southside Road. Marion was a co-founder of the York Land Trust in 1986 and worked as a member of the Maine House of Representatives and a leader in statewide, national and local conservation efforts until she passed away in 2011. The project would not have been possible without generous support from the Fuller family, in addition to a $300,000 contribution from the Town of York and donations from other generous individuals and foundations. Due to COVID-19, the land trust has postponed plans to host a celebratory public opening of the preserve until sometime in 2021 when it is safe
