Central Maine Power Explains Energy Rates to Customers STATEWIDE Central Maine Power Co. (CMP) is reaching out to customers to help them understand why portions of their bills may be higher in 2019. Beginning in January, residential customers will receive a brief explanation in their bills about how the price of their supply of energy is different than the price of delivery, which is the portion CMP is responsible for. “We are reminding customers that the energy supply rates for residential customers who choose Standard Offer supply will rise 13.7% beginning in January. This is not a CMP increase- this is the increase in the cost of the energy supplied
largely by natural gas-fired generation companies. However, CMP collects this fee in bills and remits it to the Standard Offer suppliers so customers often assume we have just raised
their rates—which is not the case,” said Doug Herling, president and CEO of CMP. “We want to do everything we can to prevent the sticker-shock that some customers experienced a
year ago when the supply rates rose by close to 18% and were first reflected in customer bills during an extreme cold spell in January.” CMP charges customers for the delivery of electricity and all customers share in transmission and distribution costs – essentially the costs involved in maintaining a safe, secure and reliable grid. The Maine Public Utilities Commission determines the rates for Standard Offer Service energy supply and announced 2019 rates earlier in December. Customers can also choose to receive energy supply from other Competitive Electric Providers and a listing of licensed retail suppliers is availa-
ble on the Maine Public Utilities Commission website. “Electric utility pricing is somewhat complex and confusing for many,” explains Herling. “While we have visited this issue frequently with customers over the years, we want to make sure we are continuing to provide information that helps customers better understand their bills.” With CMP tools such as Energy Manager and Usage Alerts on the newly revised cmpco.com website, all customers can have information about their energy use at their fingertips and can understand when and how they may be able to manage those costs.

er. On Wednesday, January 9, a follow-up program and book discussion will explore China as a country experiencing growing pains and the cultural, social, and economic conflicts that arise from such growth. The program will be presented by Edwin H. Pierce, former social studies teacher at Marshwood High School, in conjunction with the Camden Conference 2019. The Camden Conference is a 2-day symposium led by experts from China, East Asia, Europe, and the United States
that analyzes a wide range of topics and issues regarding the emerging leader which, when taken as a whole, addresses the ultimate question: Is this China’s century? Prior to the discussion, attendees are encouraged to read the 2014 book, Age of Ambition: Chasing Fortune, Truth, and Faith in the New China, written by Evan Osnos. The author lived in China for five years as a reporter for The New Yorker, and the book addresses the dualities and dramas continually
in motion in modern China. He presents the Chinese Communist Party which, though powerful, operates under constant threat of being undermined by corruption, a fluctuating economy, and the development of a middle class. Osnos investigates these clashes not only on a societal level, but on an individual one as well. The book can be borrowed through the Minerva Library system, so call 207-3632818 to reserve a copy, or request See CHINA page 13...

At his Court of Honor, the Chair of the Rollinsford Conservation Commission, Tamara Niedzolkowski, spoke glowingly about Luke’s project and the impacts it is already having on the Scoutland conservation area.
Seventeen year-old Travis Marshall, a classmate at Noble High School and fellow scout throughout Luke’s 11 years in scouting, was an outstanding master of ceremonies. Best Wishes for 2019 The staff at AWS wish to remind donors that the animals at AWS don’t know the tax laws have changed. They don’t know that the standard deduction amount increased. They don’t know that people may not be itemizing charitable contributions. All they know is that they are counting on you! Don’t let the changes in the tax laws stop you from helping pets in need this holiday season. Please, remember every little bit makes a difference to the four thousand pets that find safety and comfort at AWS each and every year. Thank you for your kindness and generosity this holiday season!
TurfMutt’s Winter-Wise Weather Tips for Pets Lucky the Turf Mutt is a former street dog who knows all too well how uncomfortable it is to spend cold days and nights outside. But Lucky was rescued by Kris Kiser, President and CEO of the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI). “Like most dogs, Lucky is an ‘outsider’ and he loves to romp in the snow, but one of our rules is that if it’s too cold for us to be outside, it’s too cold for him, too, says Kiser. “As guardians of our pets, it’s important that we keep their safety in mind during all kinds of weather. Manage outdoor activities. The safest, most comfortable place for your pets is where you are. When temperatures dip below freezing or during severe weather, it’s imperative you keep pets indoors with you and make trips outside shorter. Offer a warm place for your pet to rest inside. A pet bed works perfectly, just make sure it stays clean and dry. Don’t cut your dog’s fur in the wintertime. Your pet’s winter coat is a natural barrier from the harsh, cold elements. Consider a canine coat. Dogs with lots of fur probably don’t need an extra layer to go on walks in the winter. But smaller dogs and those with shorter coats may be more comfortable in a dog sweater or jacket. Check for frostbite. After bathroom breaks and walks,
Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS Thank you all for helping Safe Haven continue our lifesaving work throughout the year just ended. Your support has given new life to many kitties who were in dire need of help finding their way out of despair and into the homes of wonderful, caring people. To each of you, as well as our volunteers and supporters, Safe Haven wishes you a very Happy New Year! Meet Daisy, a long-haired black beauty who attracts the affection of volunteers and visitors alike. It’s not just because she urges you to come over and spoil her with treats and pats, but because she truly enjoys the company of people. She loves curling up in your lap, having her long gorgeous hair brushed, and being pampered. Her friend, Lucky, is a gorgeous tuxedo kitty. Unlike Daisy, Lucky won’t be waiting to welcome you. Lucky is shy, so he’ll be peeking out to get a look at you. So talk gently. Lucky is one of those kitties who never got socialized when they were little. This shyness can only be changed with patience and time.
Having his BFF Daisy by his side will be a real comfort for Lucky, and help him progress faster. Both kitties are between 6 8 years old, very healthy, and lost their longtime home when their owner moved and couldn’t take them with her. This has been especially hard on Lucky, who’s timid. But he’s coping, thanks to our patient Safe Haven volunteers who cheer him on. Both would be fine in a home with other cat-friendly pets. They deserve a loving human or family who’ll give Lucky the time he’ll need to feel safe in a new environment. Come on down and meet them both. FMI 207-646-1611.

check your pet’s ears, paws and tail for any sign of frostbite or ice and snow build up in the paw pads. Wipe down after walks. Keep a dry, clean towel handy to wipe down your pet’s legs, belly and paws after each outdoor excursion. Ice-melt chemicals can irritate their skin and cause serious illness if ingested. Be careful with chemicals. Antifreeze smells and tastes sweet to pets, but it’s toxic to them. Quickly clean up any spills, and consider using a brand made from non-toxic propylene glycol instead. Keep your pet hydrated. Ensure your pet has plenty of fresh, clean water to drink. Winter air is dry! Clear a path. Use a snowthrower to make quick work of snow removal and create a path to your pet’s bathroom area. Always keep kids and pets away from the equipment. Don’t leave your pet in a cold car. It’s just as dangerous to leave a pet in a cold car during winter months as it is to leave them in a hot car in the summertime. pulled it up by depressing the ctrl key and right clicking with the mouse. I lost it recently while trying to update Windows. Will you give it to us again? Thanks for all the good information you give us. Bill Dear Bill, You must be talking about WordWeb... The most recent version is 8.2 and it works with Windows 10 I always like to have a good dictionary on hand, in fact, one of the things I love about my Amazon kindle app is the ability to easily look up any word in whatever book I am reading. The new version 8.2 of WordWeb gives me that ability on my computer as well. All you have to do is hold down the Ctrl Key on your keyboard, and right click on a word, and the definition pops right up on my computer screen. This is a great program, that I love to use. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I’m new to this computer stuff. I would like to find out what is an icon, what is a cookie, URL, what does default mean? How can I educate myself? Hope you can steer me. Thanks, Margaret Dear Margaret, An icon is a symbol on your computer. A good example is the little picture of the trash can on your computer. It is an icon that
leads to your trash when you double click on it. Another icon example is the blue e which leads to Internet Explorer. A cookie is a small text file that helps websites remember your settings. You really don’t need to worry about cookies, and you will not see them in your normal computer usage. A URL (Uniform Resource Locator) is a unique address for a file on the internet. For example, if you want to go to Google, you could type in their URL (http://google.com) to get to their website. Default means the choice that is made if you don’t specify a different choice. A good example would be if you have several printers hooked up to your computer. One printer is set as the default printer. When you click print, the default printer is automatically chosen, and unless you select a different one, your document will print on the default printer. A good place to start learning about your computer (besides my website at www.asktcl.com) is actually a Goodwill Community Foundation site at www.gcflearnfree. org/computerbasics. Hope this helps you get started. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have an HP laptop, a 2 year old desk top and a 2 year old HP Officejet all in one printer. Both computers are connected wirelessly to the printer and
for 95% of the time, everything is fine. However, every 5 or 6 months, the printer goes offline all by itself and I am unable to print. In the past a friend was able to come over and resolve the issue within a matter of minutes and some computer strokes. Then I would be OK for 5 or 6 more months. Unfortunately, he never left me his procedure in writing. I have gone on HP’s web site, on You Tube, etc. with no success. The responses on You Tube seem to indicate this is somewhat common. Can you help? Thank you in advance. Dave Dear Dave, This is a fairly common problem with some printers. I am usually able to fix it by reinstalling the printer. Just get out the disk that came with the printer and run the installation program again. Sometimes, you need to remove the printer from the control panel first, but not always. This might not be the exact method your friend used, but this is the easiest method to use. ment masterpiece, Quartet for the End of Time, was written while he was a prisoner of war in Germany during World War II and was first performed by his fellow prisoners. As a “sufferer of synesthesia, a neurological condition where when one sense is activated, another unrelated sense is activated at the same time, Messiaen’s senses were heightened during this composition by the severe conditions at the prison camp. Messiaen used a series of “modes (musical scales) that were designed specifically around the colors he saw when he heard those combinations of notes. He also was inspired by the colors of the Northern Lights and by the Book of Revelation depicting the end of time, represented in this work as an ethereal eternity. Artist Lennie Peterson has traveled the world several times dedicating his life to visual art, music, and arts education. Peterson’s award-winning artwork has been purchased throughout the world and featured in exhibitions around the United States including solo exhibitions at Harvard University, The Boston Convention Center, and in New York City and Los Angeles. His composer portraits are included in art collections in Japan, Wales, Argentina, and throughout the United States. “You know those rare occasions when you’re stuck in bed with a really bad flu? The fever is roaring, you can barely move, and every bone in your body aches? Lennie Peterson says.

recorded and will be shown on cable Channel 1301 in Wells and Ogunquit on January 4, 5, 6, 11, 12, and 13, all beginning at 7 p.m. The program featured many seasonal classics and other songs with the patriotic, “You’re a Grand Old Flag as the opening number. The concert was introduced and directed by music teacher Karen Taylor with songs and poems introduced by students, some of whom sang solo. Providing music for the show were accompanists David Taylor and WHS senior Matt Chase. Near the end of the program, Chase was recognized for his dedication to the concert by Taylor and thanked in unison by the performers. This year, scenes of a large town created by students in the art class of Jenna Larochelle-Parry were illuminated on both sides of the stage. According to Taylor, this concert is part of the kindergarten music curriculum.

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ ...FILM from page 8 mentary about Piet Oudolf, one of the world’s most celebrated garden designers of transformative landscape. Quiet, reflective and transcendent, the film reveals the aesthetic and philosophy of a designer who pushes us to rethink our notion of beauty and life through plants. A panel discussion follows with Christine Bennett from KLT, John Forti, Director of Bedrock Gardens, and Jackie Nooney of JNL Inc. At 11 a.m., SEFF screens High Tide in Dorchester, a wakeup call about coastal communities in the Chesapeake grappling with sea level rise and the challenges of planning, adaptation and retreat from the edges of a rising tide. A panel discussion follows with Julie LaBranche from Rockingham Planning Commission and NH State Senator David Watters of Dover. From 12:30 - 1:30 p.m., Ohana will have poke lunch options available for purchase in the lobby of the STAR Theatre. At 1:30 p.m., SEFF screens Albatross, about artist Chris Jordan’s eight-year odyssey in the Midway Islands in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Exquisitely beautiful, immensely touching and ultimately inspiring, Albatross illuminates how our everyday material lives intersect with the natural world, even at the far corners of the globe. Albatross is co-presented with Blue Ocean Society, Seacoast Science Center, Shoals Marine Lab and Sustainable Seacoast, with a panel discussion including Jim Chase, Jenn
Kennedy, Jennifer Seavey and Keith Tharpe. The Devil We Know screens at 4 p.m. the film follows citizens in West Virginia as they take on a powerful corporation that has knowingly been dumping toxic PFAS chemicals -- now found in the blood of 99.7 percent of Americans -- into the local drinking water supply. Panelists for the discussion that follows include Andrea Amico from Testing for Pease, former state rep and clean water activist Mindi Messmer, and Jen Duggan from Conservation Law Foundation.
Film goers can take a delicious break from 6 - 7 p.m. with a tasty assortment of hors d’oeuvres that will be generously provided by Beach Pea Baker, Black Birch, Festina Lente, Golden Harvest, Ore Nell’s and Tulsi. The SEFF headliner rolls at 7 p.m. with Wasted!, an informative and entertaining documentary produced by celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain. The film circles the globe to shed light on the 1.3 billion tons of food that gets thrown out each year and the people fighting hardest to prevent it. Wasted! is sponsored by Bob’s Clam Hut, and
co-presented with Gather and End 68 Hours of Hunger. Panelists for the discussion that follows include Toby Alves of Mr. Fox Composting, Deb Anthony of Gather, and

Simple and Sustainable Ways to Become a Healthier You in 2019 Around the new year, most of us vow to make drastic changes to our diet or lifestyle. For some that means adopting a strict (and joyless) diet or signing up for hardcore fitness classes that meet at 5 a.m. (despite the fact that you’re horribly out of shape). It’s no wonder these resolutions are often short-lived. When it comes to making lasting changes to your diet and lifestyle habits, slow and steady wins the race. There’s no doubt that committing to eat healthier and get more exercise are great New Year’s resolutions. But unless your new practices are sustainable, any progress you make could be short-lived.
Small diet and lifestyle changes over time that aren’t too disruptive stand a better shot at becoming permanent healthy habits. Whether you want to lose 30 pounds, get better control of your diabetes, or achieve a similar health goal, it’s best to make small but powerful changes. Eventually, you’ll see results. If you’re ready to take some small yet mighty steps toward better health in 2019, give these tips a try. Cut out sugary drinks immediately. Sugary drinks like regular soda, fruit drinks, energy drinks, and sweet tea raise your blood glucose and add empty calories to your daily intake. Even though it can be a hard

habit to kick, do all you can to eliminate these drinks from your diet. Replace them with fresh water, low-fat milk, flavored calorie-free carbonated water, and unsweetened tea and coffee. Purge the junk food. Cookies, chips, sweets, and other snacks are hard to resist when they are an arm’s length away. The best way to avoid them is by removing them from your home. But don’t worry. When you’re craving a snack, you can try a healthier whole food option, like slices of avocado, a handful of nuts, kale chips, a small serving of Greek yogurt, a piece of fruit, veggies with hummus or nut butter. These snacks are more satisfying and pack more nutrition than your processed favorites. Do some research and identify an eating pattern you can life with. Studies show that there are many different eating patterns that can be helpful in managing diabetes. That means that if you’re trying to get your health in order, you don’t have to stick to a rigid plan that restricts many of your favorite foods. Some effective eating patterns include vegetarian or flexitarian, Mediterranean, low-carbohydrate, and low-glycemic. Choose leaner cuts of meat. Saturated fat—the kind found in animal protein—raises blood cholesterol levels, which is a risk factor for heart disease. An easy way to reduce your saturated fat intake is by choosing lean cuts
of meat. Avoid or reduce your intake of lard, fatback, and highfat meats like regular ground beef, bologna, hot dogs, sausage, bacon, spareribs, and the skin from chicken and other poultry. Instead, choose skinless poultry; fish, turkey, and beef trimmed of fat, including round, sirloin, flank, and tenderloin; and lean cuts of pork, including center loin chop and tenderloin. Plan your meal around veggies (instead of making them the afterthought). At mealtimes, try to fill at least half of your plate with nonstarchy vegetables like spinach, cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, bell peppers, Brussels sprouts, and eggplant. Veggies like cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, and Brussels sprouts are delicious when roasted in the oven, and sautéing cabbage, bell peppers, and eggplant brings out their natural flavors. Finally, start any meal with a simple salad of mixed greens to help you meet your veggie quota. Try lettuce wraps instead of bread. Iceberg, green leaf, or butter lettuce make a surprisingly delicious bread substitute. Use them in place of bread for your next sandwich. Nestle burgers or grilled chicken inside a lettuce “cup” in place of hamburger buns, and carefully wrap deli meats and toppings into a lowcarb lettuce sub sandwich and secure it with wax paper and a piece of tape. Then tear the paper away as you eat. Eat veggie noodles in place

of pasta. For a great pasta substitute, sample the veggie noodles trend. Veggie noodles are a delicious, lower-carb option that can be eaten in place of grain-based pastas. A kitchen tool called a “spiralizer” quickly and easily turns vegetables into “noodles,” or you can use a standard vegetable peeler for a similar result. For even more convenience, you can now find these spiralized veggies in the freezer or produce section of many grocery stores. Try noodles made from zucchini, sweet potato, carrot, or spaghetti squash. Top them with chili, Bolognese sauce, or use them to make a cold “pasta salad” or noodle dishes like Pad Thai. Hint: You can also try cauliflower, butternut, or broccoli “rice” in place of regular rice for a lower-carb option. Schedule in exercise five days a week. What you write on your calendar and allot time for is more likely to get done. Your workouts don’t have to be extra rigorous to be effective. Just taking a brisk 30-minute walk each day—or at least five times a week—is a great way to get your heart rate up and kickstart weight loss and improved health. Of course, if you’d like to take up running or sign up for a cardio class, go for it! But if you are sedentary, it’s important to start slow and build up your endurance so you can maintain your new routine! But don’t do ONLY cardio. Get in some strength training too (even if you’re watching TV at the same time). Strength or resistance training makes your body more sensitive to insulin and can lower blood glucose. It also helps to maintain and build strong muscles and bones. The American Diabetes Association recommends doing some type of strength training at least two times per week. Activities include using weight machines, free weights at the gym, or resistance bands; exercises that use your body weight to work your muscles like squats, lunges, planks, wall-sits, and push-ups; or activities that build and keep muscle like heavy gardening. Do at least some of your exercise outdoors. There’s nothing wrong with going to the gym, but if you’re feeling unmotivated to do your normal indoor routine, take your workout outside. The fresh air is invigorating, and studies show that being in nature decreases stress and promotes positive emotions. So be sure to trade See HEALTH page 13...

out some of your time on a treadmill for a walk or jog in a local park. Or do lunges, push-ups, and other strength training in your backyard for a change of scenery. Shake up your sedentary workday every chance you get. Sitting at a desk all day can negatively impact your health. If the nature of your work causes you to be sedentary for eight hours a day, look for chances to build more movement into your day. For example, take a ten-minute walk after lunch, get up and move a little each hour (even if it’s just a walk to the water fountain or restroom), park farther away than you normally would, take the stairs instead of the elevator. There’s no reason your New Year’s resolutions have to be painful, punishing, and ultimately unsustainable. Making more manageable changes— that you will actually enjoy—is a better game plan for success. Make 2019 the year you finally shift into a healthier lifestyle
and start moving toward building a better you. Minimum Wage Increase Will Boost Pay in 2019 AUGUSTA Workers with low wages will receive pay raises totaling more than $111 million in 2019 thanks to the $1 increase to Maine’s minimum wage. Over the course of the year, one in four Mainers is expected to receive a direct or indirect boost to their paychecks as a result of the minimum wage increasing from $10 per hour to $11 per hour starting on January 1.
“The voter-approved minimum wage law continues to pay dividends for Maine, said Sarah Austin, a policy analyst at the Maine Center for Economic Policy, or MERCER. “When workers with low incomes see their paychecks increase, the benefits ripple throughout the economy. Those workers tend to spend their additional wages to cover the basics — things like food, clothing, child care or utility bills. That kind of consumer
spending is good for the economy. It supports local jobs, which in turn spurs further growth. Thanks to a 2016 referendum approved by Maine voters, the minimum wage will increase for the third time in three years on January 1. In addition to the increase to the regular minimum wage, the minimum wage for tipped workers will increase by 50 cents, from $5 per hour to $5.50 per hour. 15.2% of all workers in the
state — roughly 87,200 Mainers — will benefit directly from raises on January 1 as a result of the minimum wage increase, according to state wage analysis conducted by the Economic Policy Institute, or PEI. Those Mainers’ average wage increase adds up to about $1,040 in additional earnings per year. All told, these low-wage workers will take home $90.76 million more in wages in 2019. Maine is one of 20 states
that will raise their minimum wages in 2019, and one of just six states to do so as a result of a ballot measure. The law will increase the minimum wage again, to $12 per hour, in January 2020. After that, the minimum wage will be indexed to inflation, providing annual costof-living adjustments to workers with the lowest wages in Maine.
Graduates Can Use First Job as a Framework For Success STATEWIDE While the job market for recent college graduates has improved, a good number of employers don’t think they’re sufficiently prepared. A recent survey by PayScale found only about 50 percent of managers felt recent grads were ready for full-time work. Among the skills that managers saw graduates lacking most were critical thinking, problem-solving, attention
to detail, and leadership. But at the same time, many have been hired with strengths in other areas, and improving weaknesses can happen as a young person grows in a job. Whether they are in the early stages of a first job after college or still searching for it, recent graduates “should focus on growth as a framework for future success, says Matt Stewart, co-founder of College Works Painting (www.collegeworks.

A framework for success for a young person includes things they should look to embrace in a first job – pleasant and unpleasant – and things their employer is looking for, he says. “While your first job may not be your dream job, you have a great opportunity to build a
strong foundation for continued upward movement in a career, Stewart says. “It’s very important to pay attention to everything and everyone around you. It can pay off – and if not there, then somewhere else. Stewart gives some tips for that first job that he says can also be applied to a career path: Start small, think big. “Many young people look for a job at a prestigious big-name company but overlook small

Stewart says. “Find a respected leader and reach out for advice. In particular, pay attention to what they did to get where they are, not just to what they say.â€? Do more than the job description. Once you are in a career, a proven way to move up or redefine your position is to take on more than the minimum expectations of the job. “Early in your career volunteer for new projects, committees, training others, etc.,â€? 5-Bubble Review! from TripAdvisor BRUNCH IS SPECTACULAR AND THE WINE DINNER PHENOMENAL! Brunch is very special here – you will not care to eat the rest of the day. Recently experienced a wine dinner which included 5 courses, each appropriately paired with the perfect wine. The chef owner prepared foods that were met with ohs and ahs all evening. You have to try this place, it has ambience, friendly staff and food unequaled in all of Ogunquit. Prices are very fair and a place I return to often.

Weekly Recipe: Homemade Turkey Bone Soup What do you do with the leftover turkey? Sandwiches are good for a day or two but my favorite is making soup with all the leftovers from Thanksgiving dinner. Carrots, onions, turnip, potatoes, gravy, celery, and even the stuffing will make a wonderful soup for the cold days ahead of us. Give this a try your family will love it with a nice crusty bread.

1} Break up your leftover turkey and place in a large pot. Leave the meat and skin attached to the bone and cover with chicken broth; I use 3 cans of College Inn chicken broth 48 ounces. Add your poultry seasoning and a bit of salt and pepper. Bring to a boil and then lower the fire too low for ½ hour. 2} Remove the meat and bones from the pot and place in a large bowl to cool. Once you can handle the bones and meat remove the meat from the bones and dispose of the bones. Cut up the turkey meat into 1 inch pieces and place back into the pot of chicken broth that has now the flavor of the turkey added to it.
3} Add your leftover vegetables to the pot that you have cut up into 1 inch pieces. Carrots, onions, celery, whole potatoes chunks “not mashedâ€?, chunks of turnip, and a cup or two of your turkey stuffing. If you have no carrots left add 2 to 3 cups of sliced carrots or a bag of mini carrots you use for dips. I like to add a jar of pearl onions if I am short onions. Celery I cup up 5 or 6 stems in ½ in pieces. Potatoes I add 3 or 4 potatoes, 3 to 4 inch in diameter, and cut up in 1 inch cubes. 4} Add any leftover gravy for extra flavor, if it’s all gone a jar of turkey gravy will do. And if you like tomatoes add a can of stewed or flavored tomatoes and the juice, cut the tomatoes into 1 inch pieces. 5} Add all the ingredients to the pot, cover and bring to a low boil, then lower the fire too low for a half hour and serve. 6} If you have any soup left, freeze it in freezer bag for a cold day when you could use a nice warm soup for lunch or dinner. Pick up a crusty bread and even a bottle of white wine for a nice treat. Enjoy!

~ Classifieds & Sports ~ WinterKids Annual Downhill 24 Reaches $1 Million Milestone YORK COUNTY As of December 2018, the WinterKids Downhill 24, presented by Darling’s Auto Group and Kittery Trading Post, has raised over $1,000,000 for WinterKids since its inception in 2013. The past six Downhill 24 events raised a total of $974,000. Fundraising for the 7th annual Downhill 24, slated for March 1, 2019, kicked off earlier this year and has already surpassed the $26,000 needed to meet WinterKids’ million dollar mark. All funds raised provide resources that further WinterKids’ mission to help children develop healthy lifelong habits through education and fun, outdoor winter activity. Each year at Sugarloaf, the WinterKids Downhill 24 invites skiers and snowboarders of all ages and abilities to
compete to see who can stay on the mountain for 24 hours, all while raising funds and awareness for WinterKids. This is the one night of the year Sugarloaf’s trails are lit up for night skiing. Registered teams and individuals are fundraising to reach WinterKids’ goal of $315,000. As of press time, this year’s teams have already raised $35,795. Registration for the Downhill 24 is open. Starting in 2019, registration fees will increase. To sign up, visit www.crowdrise. com/2019downhill24. WinterKids has helped over 100,000 Maine children to be active outdoors in the winter through unique programs statewide. Don’t Know What to Do with Your Christmas Tree Now?
YORK COUNTY Now that Christmas is over and your live tree is dropping needles all over the floor, there are a variety of things you can do to dispose of it. Some communities have curbside pick-up for old Christmas trees. Contact your local transfer station to find out. There may be limitations to the size, requiring you to cut it
up first. They may turn it into mulch for town use or may offer it to you for free. A few local non-profits will collect your tree for a small donation, which include: The Wells High School Project Graduation team on January 3-5 for $10. Project Graduation is a non-profit which raises money for an alcohol-free graduation cel-
...MAYNARD from page 20 siblings: Mary B. Maynard, Joseph E. Maynard, Catherine Maynard, Thomas M. Maynard II, Ruth Maynard, and Rose T. Maynard. He graduated from Rindge Technical High School in Cambridge and proudly served in the U.S. Navy aboard U.S.S. Hawkins during the Korean Conflict. Ed is survived by his niece, Helen Maynard-Miller of Cambridge, MA; nephew Thomas M. Maynard III of Woburn, MA; great-nephew, Joseph Maynard and his wife Meliza of Winter Park, FL; great-niece Emily Maynard-Miller of Marlborough, MA, and several other nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held on Friday, January 4, at 1 p.m. in the Cambridge
ebration. Call 207-351-6797 for availability; The Kennebunk Rotary Club in conjunction with the Kennebunk High School Interact Club on January 12 for $15 (cash only, exact change please). Place tree at the end of your driveway before 8 a.m. with the official tag attached. Tags may be purchased from Kennebunk Rotarians and at the Kennebunkport Town Office, Mann Memorial Veterinary Clinic, Kennebunk Light & Power, Downing Agency, Kennebunk Town Office, Kennebunk Savings Bank, and Camden National Bank.
The Boy Scouts Troop 338 in South Berwick on January 5 for donation. Place tree on the curb by 9 a.m. with donation envelope attached. To receive an envelope, contact Scout Master Russell Abell at abellrussell76@gmail.com or 603828-4043. Large box stores in your area may be a free dropoff point for recycling trees. Call your local Home Depot, Lowes, and Walmart to see if they partake in this program. Otherwise you can cut your tree into smaller pieces and simply include it in your yard waste bin. You
should never burn your tree in a fireplace or wood stove. In all cases, you should remove all decorations and the stand, which goes into regular trash. Fake and flocked trees (with artificial snow) will need to be chopped up and disposed of in regular trash. Other possible uses for your tree include soil erosion barriers, fish pond refuges, bird feeders or sanctuaries. In the future, you might want to consider a rooted Christmas tree which you can plant outside after the holiday is over.

motion or more compensation.” Find comfort in discomfort. Feelings like fear and doubt often accompany any task not yet completed, Stewart says. But perhaps the greatest growth is achieved when you challenge yourself to step outside your comfort zone. “You get through the temporary pain in the short term and develop newly learned skills for the long term,” Stewart says. “Your brain is hard-wired to acquire pleasure today and avoid pain, but the best thing you can do while young is to rewire
your brain – find comfort in discomfort. This will keep you in a state of constant growth and train you to handle stress while young and your pain tolerance is at its highest.” “In your first job, be prepared to embrace and learn from things that may seem suboptimal on the surface, and even from some of your mistakes,” Stewart says. “Those momentary setbacks are actually learning opportunities that will not only make you better at your job but for the long run.”
