The fire trucks include 3000 Allison EVS transmissions, and boast the fire-dousing ability of 1200-gallon UPF tanks with Hale Q-Max 1500 gpm pumps. The apparatus also include Fire Research telescoping lights, and will bolster the on-scene effectiveness of the Berwick Fire Department. The department, which is a combination of career

and on-call personnel, receives around 900 calls a year. “Our team is proud to have built these new pumpers for the Berwick Fire Department, said Michael Schwabe, president and CEO of Toyne, Inc. “We ensure quality in all of the apparatus we build, and we know that these will be great additions to the department and a tremendous help to the first-class firefighters serving in Berwick. Berwick has a population of around 7,000 people. 59,000 Mainers to get Raises on January 1 as Minimum Wage Increases to $10 per Hour

STATEWIDE Roughly 59,000 Mainers will receive a direct wage increase as of New Year's Day as Maine's minimum wage grows to $10 per hour, a $1 hourly increase over last year. The federal minimum wage has not increased since 2009 and the purchasing power of the minimum wage has steadily declined for decades. Meanwhile, states have recognized the need to raise wages to promote eco-

nomic security for low-wage workers and their families. Maine is one of 18 states, including three in New England, raising wages in January. The 59,000 Mainers receiving a direct raise in the new year represent roughly one out of every 10 workers in the state. Their raises will amount to an overall direct wage increase of $79.6 million in 2018, according to an analysis by the nonprofit Economic Policy Institute. That makes for

a roughly $1,349 annual pay increase for each minimum wage worker in the state. "A strong minimum wage protects families from poverty and forms the foundation of a fair, thriving economy," said MECEP Policy Analyst Sarah Austin. "Raising the minimum

wage doesn't just provide greater economic security for Maine workers; It boosts Maine's economy as well. The new year's increase will provide families with additional means to buy groceries, pay for their children's health care, and spend at local businesses."

ELIOT/KITTERY/ SOUTH BERWICK/YORK – Since its formation in late 2015, the York River Study Committee has been exploring whether the York River would benefit from being designated in the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System. After two years of study, the Committee now unanimously endorses a Partnership Wild and Scenic River (PWSR) designation for the York River and its major tributaries. “Receiving a Partnership Wild and Scenic River designation is a unique opportunity to garner support that would help protect the York River’s remark-

able value to the communities, said Committee Chairperson Chuck Ott. The rivers recommended for designation include the York River from the outlet of York Pond in Eliot to the Route 103 bridge in York, Cutts Ridge Brook, Rogers Brook, Smelt Brook, Bass Cove Creek, Libby Brook, Dolly Gordon Brook, and Cider Hill Creek. “These rivers collectively contribute to the region’s character, economy, and biodiversity, said Ott, who further noted, “We’re confident that the rivers are a good fit for designation, and that this program is a good fit for our communities.

There are 208 rivers in the National Wild and Scenic Rivers program, including 13 designated Partnership rivers. A local committee involved with a PWSR receives about $120,000 each year to implement its stewardship plan. Funds can be used to undertake activities such as outreach programs, habitat restoration projects, educational programming, and historic site research. There is no federal land ownership or management for designated PWSRs; there are no new land use restrictions; and there are no required changes to local regulations. A locally approved plan that will guide riverrelated community outreach and preservation actions must be in place for a PWSR designation, so the Committee now is turning its efforts toward completing a York River Watershed Stewardship Plan. This advisory plan will identify the many watershed resources, threats, and actions that can be undertaken to help protect or enhance resources for the long term. Ultimately each watershed community will decide in late 2018 whether to approve the stewardship plan and the designation. If supported locally, See RIVER page 4...

Fair Tide Celebrates 20 Years Working to Reduce Homelessness

KITTERY There is no better reminder of what it means to be homeless on the Seacoast than these recent frigid nights, when temperatures have dropped below freezing for days in a row. And there is no better time for Fair Tide’s housing program to be celebrating 20 years of service. It was a handful of concerned local residents who, in 1998, founded the nonprofit that provides housing and support services to the homeless. The group purchased a rundown house in the Kittery Foreside and raised the funds to trans-

form it into five units of housing for individuals and families who had nowhere else to go. Twenty years later, Fair Tide has provided over 45,000 bed nights of shelter to more than 100 Seacoast individuals in need. The fact that Fair Tide has endured all these years is due largely to the support of the local community, grants from funders like the United Way of the Greater Seacoast, and sales from the Fair Tide thrift store, which has provided more than $1.7 million in revenue since we began. “This milestone is a time for celebration and a commemo-

The York River watershed is particularly notable for its rich and well-preserved history and its natural intact habitats that sup-

port one of Maine’s most biodiverse regions. “That we can have these high-quality resources in a populated area is pretty remarkable, but not something we can take for granted with the continued development pressures and climate change impacts that will affect our landscape, noted Claesson. the last year, and it commissioned two new studies in 2017 – a survey of historic resources for the upper York River in parts of Eliot and York, and a survey of migratory fish at four river sites. The fish study revealed strong runs of key fish species, including rainbow smelt and alewife, and that the York River is providing quality habitat for fish. The historic resources surveys identified new Native American archaeological sites, investigated areas suspected of containing historic artifacts, and better documented previously known historic structures. Contractors involved with the historic resources surveys will present their findings at the Eliot Historical Society meeting at 7 p.m., January 8, at the John F. Hill Grange Hall, 1412 State Rd, Eliot. The meeting is free and open to the public. ~ News ~ It’s the Law! Snow vs. Vehicles and Roads STATEWIDE As the deepest winter months approach, put safety first when dealing with snowfall. Maine Statute 29-A Chapter 19 Subchapter 1 prohibits driving with obstructed windows: A person may not operate a vehicle with a sign, poster, opaque or semi-transparent material, or substance on the front windshield, side wing or side, or rear window that obstructs the operator's clear view of the way or an intersecting way. While you are cleaning, be sure to clear the roof and hood of snow or ice to prevent damage to those following behind you on the roadways. Maine Statute 29-A Chapter 21 Subchapter 2 prohibits placing substances in a public way: A person may not place and allow to remain on a public way, snow or slush that has not accumulated there naturally. This means that you cannot plow snow from your driveway or yard onto or across a public way. Pushing snow to the side of the roadway and leaving it there is likewise prohibited. Driveway plowing should start from the roadway, with snow plowed to a designated spot on your property.

~ Ask The Computer Lady~ Dear Computer Lady, Can you please tell me how to shrink my Websites (like MSN or another news website) to fit on my computer screen? The zoom control in the upper right corner does nothing to solve the problem. Someone suggested that I change my resolution but won't that change the size of everything else on my computer. Everything else on my computer is fine - just the right side of the websites I go to extends past the viewing area on my computer and I don't know how to get the rest of the right hand side onto my screen. Any suggestions? I have Microsoft Windows 10 if that is of any help to you. Thank you, Larry Dear Larry, From what you describe, it sounds like your web browser window is partially off the screen. If you can see the title bar (at the top of your web browser window) try holding down your mouse button in the title bar and dragging the window back to the center of your screen. If that doesn't work, you can try resizing the window to fit better. Point to the left edge of the browser window until the cursor turns into a double sided arrow and drag it to the right. This will make the window narrower, and you can then go back to the title bar and drag it to the left again. Since this was a little hard to describe in writing, I created a video you can watch at: https://youtu.be/HzOtZ_6l3bM I hope it helps! Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have been using WordPerfect 8 for as long as I have had a computer, but fear that when I change to Windows 10 or above, it won't work for me any more. The main reason I use it is because I write in a personal journal, and it has a template. Is there another program out there that has such a template that would work with another such program? I haven't found one, but perhaps I haven't known where to look. Thank you for your assistance, Marilyn

Dear Marilyn, Actually, you can create your own template that will work in just about any word processing program including the free, LibreOffice. I don't know what your template looks like, or how you use it, but if you can re-create that document in another program, you can then save it as a template to use in the program. A great program for keeping a journal would be Microsoft OneNote. You can set up a journal notebook with sections and pages like a physical notebook, and have a template for additional pages that you create. If I knew more about how your journal template worked, I could give you more specific answers, but hopefully, this will get you started. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, My husband passed away 4 months ago and my income has taken a huge drop. I am an elderly lady and having to live on a tight budget. I've had to let go of Norton security that I've had for years. They used to take their money right out of my credit card without even telling me in advance. Is there any kind of free security out there for our computers for those of us who can no longer afford it? Thanks, Trudy

once every day or two. This gives your computer a chance to do some behind the scenes cleaning up and refreshes the operating system. It also is often needed when installing updates. I would plan on turning the computer on when you first use it in the morning, then keep it on until you use it for the last time that day. When you are done for the day, simply shut your computer down. This will result in a longer life with less problems for your computer. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Dear Computer Lady, As a new patron, not very computer savvy, and the only user of my desktop, can I remain logged in all the time or should I log off each time? Sidney

First of all, thank you for your patronage! Your support means that I can devote more time to answering questions like yours. Since you are the only user of your computer, you should be able to stay logged in all the time. Here are some things to consider when making that decision. 1. Staying logged in means that anyone with physical access to your computer can use it. If you live alone, that is not an issue, but you might want to remember to turn the computer off if you have people in the house like cleaners or workers. 2. Even though you can stay logged in all the time, it is still beneficial for your computer if you shut it down and restart it

Dear Trudy, I am truly sorry to hear of your husband's passing. If you are

no longer getting updates from Norton, you should uninstall the program. Once you uninstall Norton (or any antivirus that is installed on your computer) Windows will activate Windows defender that is already on your computer. Windows defender is not as thorough as a good paid security program (I really like Emsisoft which is not as expensive as Norton usually is) but it is better than being completely unprotected. Once you have Windows Defender protecting you, you should also be careful not to click links in email messages, or download files from websites. Also, never call a tech support number you find online, and don't let someone you don't personally know take control of your computer. If you follow these safe computing practices, you probably won't get infected. If you can afford something less expensive than Norton, I would urge you to give Emsisoft a try. Elizabeth

Safe Haven Humane Society

WELLS A very special Thank You to all our supporters and volunteers. You help Safe Haven save the lives of desperate kitties in our beautiful state of Maine. Thanks for your generosity, your hard work and your compassionate hearts! Happy New Year! For a year, Sir Sparkles lingered in a stainless steel cage, depressed and hopeless, at a holding facility up north. When we invited him back to Safe Haven, he was apprehensive. But in our

sunny Adoption Center, he discovered he was no longer stuck in a tiny, windowless cage. Now he had sunlight and windows to watch the birds, and blankets and toys, and people petting and fussing over him. When he’s petted, Sir Sparkles is so overjoyed, he drools! He thinks it’s too good to be true that someone would make a fuss over him. He is a quiet gentleman, only about 5-yearsold, handsome with a mediumlength black coat. He’s still learning trust and will probably be happiest in a quiet home with no other cats. He loves anything salmon flavored, so treats are a great way to get on his good side! January’s arctic air raises our concern about strays suffer-

Animal Welfare Society WEST KENNEBUNK Chinchillas are domesticated exotic rodents, originally from the Andes, known for their soft fur. They are companionable, active, fun pets. They can be very entertaining to watch though they do not enjoy being cuddled like dogs and cats do. Like many pet rodents, chinchillas require an enclosed habitat. It should be multi-leveled with ramps and perches to allow for exercise. It should have a cool rest area (such as a marble slab)

as chinchillas have a tendency to overheat. Chinchillas also need a separate area to take their baths. Specialty sand material (available at pet supply stores) is laid out and the chinchilla will literally roll around with wild abandon. Chinchillas also require a regular diet of pelleted food, available at pet supply stores. They also consume high-quality grass hay. They also need plenty of toys to regularly chew and gnaw, as their teeth never stop growing. AWS currently has two pairs of bonded chinchillas, Rudy & Rudy, Jr. (seen here) and Onyx and Blacki, looking to find a new home.

Shelter teams are needed from morning till 8 p.m., so you can easily fit it into your free time. Help is needed seven days and nights to care for our beloved kitties at our Adoption Center. Our thrift shop could really use extra help on weekends. Again, even just two hours per week will really help. Our fundraising teams also need creative hands. Red Cross and Dunkin’ Donuts Celebrate Partnership with Make a Difference Campaign STATEWIDE For the 11th year, the American Red Cross and Dunkin’ Donuts will partner in January to help increase blood donations and reward generous donors. Through the Dunkin’ Donors Make a Difference campaign, all those who come to give blood or platelets in January at Red Cross blood drives in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and parts of New York will receive a $5 DD Card.* “Donating blood or platelets helps to save lives, and with Dunkin’ Donuts’ support, we can help ensure hospital patients receive the transfusions they need, said Donna M. Morrissey, director of national partnerships, Red Cross Biomedical Services. “We appreciate the dedication that Dunkin’ Donuts has given to our mission for more than a decade. The need for blood doesn’t break for winter weather. Please make an appointment to give the gift of life through a blood or platelet donation this January. The $5 DD Card can be used toward the purchase of any item – including coffee, hot chocolate and baked goods,

among other items – at participating Dunkin’ Donuts. In addition, the DD Card features a Red Cross logo, is reloadable and can also be enrolled in the DD PerksŽ Rewards program. “We’re proud to partner with the Red Cross once again to thank blood donors this January, said Michelle McDonough, field marketing manager. “The Dunkin’ Donors Make a Difference campaign clearly resonates with donors and benefits countless people and communities in need. It reflects Dunkin’ Donuts’ steadfast commitment to the health of the communities in which we live and operate. The Red Cross and Dunkin’ Donuts partnership has achieved great success during the past 10 years by supporting the collection of approximately 790,000 blood and platelet donations during January, which is often a challenging month for donations due to winter weather forcing blood drives to cancel and seasonal illnesses temporarily keeping some donors at home. Simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood. org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed

to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card

heater problem. Symptoms of CO poisoning can mimic the flu, so make sure the CO detector is in working order. For more information about fire and carbon monoxide dangers, visit the National Fire Protection Association at www.nfpa.org. Stove and Range The stove, range and other kitchen appliances are designed for cooking, not heating. Use them only as specified in the manufacturer’s instructions. In addition to creating a fire hazard, a natural gas stove or oven can present a carbon-monoxide risk when used for heating. Space Heaters: Use only space heaters that have been tested and certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory. Read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Never use a device designed for outdoor use indoors. Place the space heater on a level surface away from foot traffic, at least three feet from combustible materials. Inspect the cord for fraying, and after plugging it in, periodically feel the cord near the outlet to make sure the coating is not getting hot. Do not run the

space heater cord under a rug or carpeting, and never use an extension cord for a space heater. Keep children and pets away, and turn off the space heater when you leave the area. More space heater safety information can be found on the U.S. Department of Energy website at https://energy.gov. Heating, Hot Water and Plumbing Keep the furnace area clear of flammable materials and keep vents clear to provide a good air supply to your heating system to ensure proper combustion. Water pipes that are exposed to cold temperatures may freeze and burst. Don’t ignore drips or odd noises from your heating system — call your heating company to investigate. Wrap exposed pipes in your basement with pipe insulation to help them retain heat and avoid freezing. The American Red Cross offers additional tips for avoiding frozen pipes at www.redcross.org. Health & Fitness Weighing in on Exercise vs. Dieting for Better Weight Loss Results Statistics indicate more and more men, women and children are overweight or obese. The National Institutes of Health state that more than 35 percent of adults in the United States are obese and more than 34 percent are overweight, while 17 percent of children and adolescents in the United States are obese. Obesity rates are three times as high among today’s children than they were among youngsters just one generation ago. As individuals attempt to lose weight, they may wonder what is the most effective way to accomplish that objective. Some argue that the secret to weight loss is lots of exercise, while others insist that calorie control is the key. When it comes

to slimming down, some may be surprised by what the experts have to say. The Mayo Clinic advises that cutting calories through dietary changes appears to promote weight loss more effectively than physical exercise alone. According to Shawn M. Talbott, Ph.D., a nutritional biochemist and former director of the University of Utah Nutrition Clinic, weight loss is about 75 percent diet and 25 percent exercise. People generally see the largest short-term results when they eat healthy foods and healthy portions. Poor diets can be difficult to overcome, as it takes a lot of exercise to spur dramatic weight loss, whereas a low-calorie, healthy diet can be a simple and effective

means to losing weight. Nutritionists often point to a balanced diet that focuses on fruits and vegetables, lean proteins and whole-grain carbohydrates over fad diets or ones that require the adherence to strict guidelines that are difficult to follow for lengthy periods of time. But exercise should not be abandoned in favor of a low-calorie diet. Dr. Yoni Freedhoff, who runs one of the largest obesity clinics in Canada, says that weight loss occurs from what’s created in the kitchen, but health is gained in the gym. Dr. Freedhoff often advises his clients to make smart changes to the foods they eat to spur weight loss, and then incorporate exercise into their lifestyles as a way to keep the body in top form. Regular physical exercise is necessary to maintain strong bones, build muscle, improve flexibility, and keep the cardiovascular system working efficiently. Exercise also releases endorphins, which can

improve mental alertness and feelings of well-being. The Mayo Clinic notes that studies have shown that people who lose weight and keep it off over the long haul are those who get regular physical activity. When it comes to losing

weight, the foods a person eats play a bigger role than exercise. But it is the combination of both diet and exercise that can lead to greater overall health and sustained weight loss. BUSINESS & FINANCE

Maine Unemployment Rate 3.3 Percent in November STATEWIDE Household Survey Estimates – The preliminary seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.3 percent for November was ...WAGE from page 2 income Mainers will see their salaries increase as a result of the well-documented "spillover effect," in which employers raise salaries for other workers as pay scales are adjusted to reflect the new wage floor set at the state level. This is the second January in a row that low-income Mainers will have received a raise as a result of a voterapproved minimum wage law enacted at the ballot box in 2016. The new law increased the minimum wage from $7.50 to $9.00 an hour in 2017, and will continue to increase the minimum wage by a dollar each year until it reaches $12 in 2020. Thereafter, the minimum wage will be indexed to inflation, providing regular cost-of-living increases to lowwage Mainers. The minimum wage law approved by voters would also have gradually eliminated the subminimum wage allowed for tipped workers, which allows employers to pay tipped employees only half the minimum wage, as long as tips make up the difference. However, the Legislature repealed the portion of the law that raised tipped workers' wages — effectively blocking 24,000 Maine workers from receiving the full benefit of the minimum wage increase. Tipped workers in Maine are overwhelmingly women, and are more than twice as likely to live in poverty than the workforce as a whole.

down slightly from 3.5 percent for October and 3.8 percent one year ago. The number of unemployed was down 3,600 over the year to 23,100. The unemployment rate has been at or below 4.0 percent for 26 consecutive months. The U.S. preliminary unemployment rate of 4.1 percent for November was unchanged from October and down from 4.6 percent one year ago. The employment to population ratio estimate of 61.7 percent remained above the U.S. average

of 60.1 percent. Payroll Survey Estimates – The preliminary non-farm payroll jobs estimate was up 2,100 from one year ago to 619,200 for November. The private sector gained 2,500 jobs, with the largest gains in the healthcare and social assistance; professional and business services; and transportation and warehousing sectors. Federal, State, and local governments combined shed 400 jobs. Not Seasonally Adjusted Substate Data – The not season-

ally adjusted statewide unemployment rate estimate of 3.0 percent for November was down from 3.4 percent one year ago. Around the State, the lowest rate was 2.4 percent in Cumberland and Sagadahoc counties, and the highest was 4.6 percent in Washington County. The unemployment rate was below the statewide aver-

age in the Portland-South Portland (2.4 percent) metro area and close to the average in the Lewiston-Auburn (2.7 percent) and Bangor (2.9 percent) metro areas. December estimates will be released on Tuesday, January 23 (Data Release Schedule). For more information, visit www.maine.gov.

Casper Albert Bridges, 88 WELLS – Casper Albert Bridges, 88 years, a lifelong resident of Wells, Maine passed away peacefully at home in the early morning hours of Thursday, December 28, 2017. He was born March 10, 1929, “The last of the legacy as the youngest of Burleigh A. and Etta (Miller) Bridges’ twenty-one children. He grew up “digging clams alongside his family on “Clamshell Alley in Wells. Casper served his country as a heavy equipment operator with the United States Army from 1953-1955 and then 8 years in the Reserves. “Cap also served his community in several capacities for many years, starting in 1946 when he became a member of the Wells Corner Hose Co.; culminating with his tenure as Fire Chief there from 1963-71. He was appointed Road Foreman/Commissioner of the Wells Highway Department in 1969 and served in that role until his retirement in 1991. He was also a local handyman for many different people around Wells for many years. Cap married the love of his life, Marie Wildes, of Kennebunkport, on November 22, 1957. In 1960 they moved into their home on Drakes Island Road where

they raised their children, and resided for the remainder of their lives. Upon his retirement, Cap enjoyed most of all his trips at his beloved Moosehead Lake, hunting, puttering or just relaxing, listening to his country and western music. Many memories were made at “Popie’s Camp in Greenville. He was predeceased by his wife in 2015, and his sons-in-law William Timberman II and Brian Boudreau, as well as his 20 other siblings. “Popie, as he was affectionately known by his extended family, is survived by his children, Richard Libby, Laurie Boudreau, Sherry Timberman, Ron Bridges, and James Bridges; his grandchildren, Tracy, Gary, Jeffrey, Crystal, Mandy, Jessica, Jennifer, Ashley, Angela, Marci, and Shauna; great grandchildren, Timothy, Roseanna, Faye, Tucker, Cody, Ethan, and Cassandra; as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews and his little dog Daisy. Visiting hours will be held 3 to 5 p.m. Friday, January 5 at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells, where a Funeral Service will also be held 10 a.m. Saturday, January 6, with Rev. Charity Omartian officiating. Spring interment will be held at Ocean View Cemetery in Wells. To share a memory or leave a message of condolence, please visit Casper’s Book of Memories page at www.bibberfuneral. com. Arrangements are in care of Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk.

Please note that in last week’s issue of the Sentinel (12/29/17), the obituary on page 11 should have listed the deceased as “Samuel Wilkinson Warner.
