Gnomes For Homes Continues KITTERY & YORK Daisy Janes and Fair Tide Thrift Store are excited to remind readers about the Gnomes For Homes project which will continue as long as there is interest! Started by the Guay family in Kittery, the homemade gnomes help raise funds for Fair Tide, a non-profit organization which focuses on reducing

homelessness through housing and supportive services in the seacoast. Prices range $12-15 with half the profits going to Fair Tide and half to purchase more supplies. The gnomes made their debut at Shapleigh Middle School but have now reached states as far away as Utah. Locals can find them at Daisy

Janes, 250 York Street in York and at the Fair Tide Thrift Store, 15 State Road in Kittery. Daisy Janes posted on Facebook, “Thanks to Katie Guay and her two daughters [Maddy age 11 and Caroline age 10] who came up with this incredible idea and handmade each and every Gnome… The thrift store accounts for a big chunk of the non-profit’s funds. Local fundraisers, the annual dinner, and other events account for another portion of their funding. Obviously, some of these events have been canceled and postponed in the past months, right at a time when need for services has increased… Katie and her girls are making a difference, let’s help them by buying a sweet Gnome!” For more information, visit www.fairtide.org or find them on Facebook. surprise medical bills was signed into law as part of the government funding package. Americans increasingly pay more out-of-pocket for their health care, so it is crucial that they have access to the information they need to make informed decisions. The health and economic crisis we are currently experiencing due to COVID-19 has underscored the need for Congress to come together to increase the affordability and accessibility of medical care. “Far too many Americans are struggling with the skyrocketing cost of health care, which places severe strain on family budgets and threatens access to the care and medications they need. The last thing patients should have to worry about while they are sick or recovering is receiving an unexpected bill because they were unaware they

students wanted to help children in Maine stay warm and cozy. Each classroom worked together to make child-sized tied fleece blankets and donated them to the Maine Children’s Home for Little Wanderers. This organization supports families and children across the state of Maine. During their Christmas program, they distribute boxes of gifts and clothing to more than 1,700 children throughout the state. They believe “every child deserves to reach his or her full potential”, just as they do at Central School. After making blankets for children in need, each child

Maine and United Kingdom Agree to Partnership on Clean Energy, Climate Change AUGUSTA Governor Janet Mills and the United Kingdom’s Minister of State at the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), the RT Hon Kwasi Kwarteng MP, announced the signing a Memorandum of Understanding (“MoU”) to enhance cooperation between the State of Maine and the UK to

pursue ambitious advancement in clean energy technologies and mutually achieve carbon neutrality by mid-century or sooner. “The UK has led the way globally in using offshore wind to reduce emissions and we are pleased to be working with Governor Mills and her team to share our experience,” said UK Energy Minister Kwasi Kwarteng. “This fantastic partnership with Maine will help both the United States and the UK take another step towards our critical climate change goals.” “The United Kingdom is showing how bold policy goals to create a vibrant, diversified clean energy industry can combat climate change and generate economic growth,” said Governor Janet Mills. “With this MoU, Maine is continuing to lead in the development of clean energy. By working with our colleagues in the UK to develop these industries, Maine can achieve its energy goals, create jobs, and preserve and protect our state for future generations as we fight climate change.” The MoU signed by Governor Mills and Minster Kwarteng will strengthen a bilateral partnership between Maine and the United Kingdom to promote and

foster sustainable growth, support innovation, and strengthen the global response to climate change. As global leaders in lowcarbon technologies, Maine and the UK are entering into this agreement to mutually benefit researchers and businesses, as a reflection of the growing need for international collaboration on climate and energy. Specifically, the MoU commits Maine and the UK to collaborate and share resources to

reduce emissions from heating and transportation and advance innovative offshore wind and green hydrogen technology. Additionally, the MoU calls for cooperation on evaluating impacts of offshore wind on fisheries and the marine environment, workforce development, and port infrastructure. The genesis for this agreement came in early 2020, following Governor Mills’ visit to Scotland as part of a U.S. delegation of state and federal officials

invited by the UK government to learn more about offshore wind energy. “Formalizing this partnership allows Maine and the UK to coordinate on innovative technologies such as floating offshore wind and green hydrogen to foster innovation and advance economic growth,” said Dan See CLEAN page 14...

Caution When Eviction Moratorium Extended Buying from Social Until January 31 Media Ads Social media advertising is an effective way for small business to get the word out about their products. Unfortunately, the same goes for scams. BBB Scam Tracker has received thousands of complaints about misleading Facebook and Instagram ads. In fact, the 2018 BBB Scam Tracker Risk Report found that online purchase scams were the most common cons reported to Scam Tracker and the category with the most victims, and online purchase scams have spiked during the pandemic. Look out for these common scams: Products That Claim to Support Charity

As you scroll through your Facebook or Instagram feed, you see an ad from a small business selling adorable jewelry, t-shirts, or other merchandise. The best part? Some of the proceeds from the sale will go to a charity that helps rescue animals, foster children, or support another worthy cause. Some consumers even report getting direct messages from sellers promoting the products and asking them to spread the word to friends and family. You make your purchase. But when your merchandise never gets delivered, the doubts start to build. When you contact the company about your purchase, they are suddenly unreachable or reply with an auto-

Reminder: Wage Increase & Earned Paid Leave STATEWIDE In 2016, Maine voters approved an increase to the minimum wage from $7.50 to $12 in four steps. There was also a provision in there that once this was completed that the wage would increase annually adjusted by the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers or CPI-W for the Northeast Region. This is the first year of the CPI adjustment. That number has been calculated for 2021 and it is $12.15 per

hour on January 1, 2021, and $6.08 per hour for tipped employees. Maine’s Earned Paid Leave program also went into effect on January 1. This includes all industries except for seasonal industries as defined by 26 M.R.S. sub-section 1251 for employers with more than 10 employees in Maine for more than 120 days in any calendar year. It includes all employees: full-time, part-time, temporary, per diem, etc. For more information, go to www.maine.gov.

Free Trial Offers Many of these misleading advertisements tout celebrity endorsements and promise a trial of the hottest new skin care or nutritional supplement for the minimal investment of shipping fees. What consumers report is that once they agree to the terms and conditions of these offers, they realize they have agreed to multiple monthly shipments for products in excess of $70-100 each. Before you sign up for these “limited time offers” research the company online, see if there are any other consumer complaints, read the terms and conditions you are agreeing to carefully, and if you can’t find any terms and conditions, that is a red flag. Watch out for pre- checked boxes and make sure that you know who and where the company is that you are purchasing from. Counterfeit Merchandise Name brand goods are prime targets for unauthorized duplication, from sporting goods to designer apparel and handbags. If you purchase any of these products you may run the risk of not only receiving a poor quality product, but it may not meet environmental and safety regulations either. Look out for red flags. This includes items that are priced significantly lower than what other retailers are charging, spelling and grammatical errors in the advertisements, and poor quality images. The eviction ban protects tenants who: have used their best efforts to obtain government assistance for housing; are unable to pay their full rent due to a substantial loss of income; are making their best efforts to make timely partial payments of rent; would become homeless or have to move into a shared living setting if they were to be evicted; and one of the following financial criteria must apply – The tenant must expect to earn

no more than $99,000 (individuals) or $198,000 (joint) in 2020; not have been required to report any income to the IRS in 2019; or have received an Economic Impact Payment (stimulus check) pursuant to Section 2201 of the CARES Act. Tenants who do not meet the above criteria for federal protection may still benefit from certain state or local eviction ban orders. A more detailed explanation can be found on www. nolo.com.

Nearly $50M in Relief for Maine Farmers WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senator Susan Collins announced that Maine farmers have been awarded a total of $48,890,321 to help offset the financial harm they have experienced due to COVID-19. The funding is provided through the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP), created through the CARES Act, which will provide up to $16 billion in direct payments to America’s farmers. “The supply chain disruptions and restaurant closures caused by the pandemic have placed increasing financial pressure on Maine’s rural farming communities, from newly found-

ed farms to operations that have been passed down from generation to generation,” said Senator Collins. ” In addition to facilitating the Farmers to Families Food Box program, CFAP is providing vital financial assistance to producers of agricultural commodities who have suffered a five-percent-or-greater price decline due to the pandemic and face significant additional marketing costs as a result of lower demand, surplus production, and disruptions to shipping patterns and the orderly marketing of commodities. To date, the funding has been allocated as follows: Dairy farmers have been awarded $12,617,080; Livestock farmers have been awarded $4,443,330; Non-Specialty crop farmers have been awarded $715,233; Specialty crop farmers have been awarded $15,044,095; Eggs/Broilers have been awarded $30,733; Sales Commodities have been awarded $14,914,020; Acreage-based crops have been awarded $1,125,830. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, I’m not very computer savvy, and the only user of my desktop, can I remain logged in all the time or should I log off each time? Sidney Dear Sidney, Since you are the only user of your computer, you should be able to stay logged in all the time. Here are some things to consider when making that decision. 1. Staying logged in means that anyone with physical access to your computer can use it. If you live alone, that is not an issue, but you might want to remember to turn the computer off if you have people in the house like cleaners or workers. 2. Even though you can stay logged in all the time, it is still beneficial for your computer if you shut it down and restart it once every day or two. This gives your computer a chance to do some behind the scenes cleaning up and refreshes the operating system. It also is often needed when installing updates. I would plan on turning the computer on when you first use it in the morning, then keep it on until you use it for the last time that day. When you are done for the day, simply shut your computer down. This will result in a longer life with less problems for your computer. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I am an elderly lady and having to live on a tight budget. I’ve had to let go of Norton security that I’ve had for years. They used to take their money right out of my credit card without even telling me in advance. Is there any kind of free security out there for our computers for those of us who can no longer afford it? Thanks, Trudy Dear Trudy, If you are no longer getting updates from Norton, you should uninstall the program. Once you uninstall Norton (or any antivirus that is installed on your computer) Windows will activate Windows Defender that is already on your computer. Windows Defender is not as thorough as a good paid security program (I really like Emsisoft which is not as expensive as Norton usually is) but it is better than being completely unprotected. Once you have Windows Defender protecting you, you should also be careful not to click links in email messages, or download files from websites. Also, never call a tech support number you find online, and don’t let someone you don’t personally know take control of your computer. If you follow these safe computing practices, you probably won’t get infected. If you can afford something less expensive than Norton, I would urge you to give Emsisoft a try. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady, I have been using WordPerfect 8 for as long as I have had a computer, but fear that when I change to Windows 10 or above, it won’t work for me any more. The main reason I use it is because I write in a personal journal, and it has a template. Is there another program out there that has such a template that would work with another such program? I haven’t found one, but perhaps I haven’t known where to look. Thank you for your assistance, Marilyn Dear Marilyn, Actually, you can create your own template that will work in just about any word processing program including the free LibreOffice. I don’t know what your template looks like, or how you use it, but if you can re-create that document in another program, you can then save it as a

template to use in the program. A great program for keeping a journal would be Microsoft OneNote. You can set up a journal notebook with sections and pages like a physical notebook, and have a template for additional pages that you create. If I knew more about how your journal template worked, I could give you more specific answers, but hopefully, this will get you started. Elizabeth

cially close at the end of March. We have been having clearance sales each month and the next one is this Saturday, January 9, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Fill a bag for $5, or a bigger bag for $10. Shoppers have a blast, overstuffing their bags to their hearts’ desire. It’s win-win for everyone! We wish everyone a Happy and Healthy New Year!

Local Veterinarian Publishes New Book ELIOT Retired Veterinarian John Hunt published a new book in November 2020 called “Enjoy Your Pets and Don’t Forget to Give Them a Hug.” Originally from Bucksport where he was a veterinarian for 30 years, Hunt now resides in Eliot and teaches at York County Community College in Wells. His new book, published by PRGott Books, can be found on www.amazon. com or at Canine Cupboard in Portsmouth, NH. Amazon noted, “This book offers animal lovers informative, insightful, yet entertaining essays about their pets, pet care, and everything in between. Some topics are based on questions Dr. Hunt got from his clients and children. Other subjects cover veterinary medicine, wildlife, nutrition, and behavior. The author often integrated his personal experience as a veterinarian and pet owner into the essays. This is the third book in Dr. Hunt’s ‘Useful Little Book Series’.” His second book, “Why Does My Cat Look At Me Like That? Ponderings of a Small Town Veterinarian”, was published in August 2019 by Dorrance Publishing Co., and also includes short, informative, and humorous essays covering a broad range of topics related to pets and veterinary medicine. Much content is inspired by the years he visited elementary schools and talked to children about their pets.

Other writings by Dr. Hunt include the first book in the series, “Ask The Vet”, which was published in 1994 and is currently out of print, as well as a short story, “Tales of Northern and Downeast Maine” in the book, “Harvest Recess and Picker Shacks”. He and fellow YCCC teacher and equine veterinarian Dr. Dave Jefferson are currently working together on “The Dog and Pony Show”, which offers insight from their different veterinary experiences. They hope to finish it this spring. “We decided to make short comments at the end of each other’s chapters – I think this will be a unique approach to vet med!” replied Dr. Hunt. Mainers might already know Dr. Hunt from his radio shows, “Let’s Talk Animals: From Aardvarks To Zebras” and “Pet Sounds”, both presented by WERU Community Radio (89.9 serving Midcoast, Downeast and Central Maine).

Weekly Recipe: Twice Baked Southern Sweet Potatoes If you like stuffed sweet potatoes with lots of butter, brown sugar and marshmallows, this recipe will bring raves to your dinner table. Try adding crispy bacon, fresh cut chives, and a double dose of cheese to turn this southern potato to a northern treat with your favorite steak, pork roast or even turkey. This southern vegetable dish is equivalent to a pecan pie for desert. White potatoes move over.

Ingredients:

Directions:

4 sweet potatoes, ¾-1 pound 1 tablespoon of olive oil ½ cup of shredded parmesan cheese, about 4 ounces 2 tablespoons of butter 3-4 tablespoons of fresh chopped chives 1 tablespoon of cool whip or whip cream ½ teaspoon of salt ½ teaspoon of fresh ground pepper 3-4 ounces of goat cheese, softened 6 slices of hickory-smoked bacon slices, cooked and crumbled Garnish with crumbled goat cheese and chopped fresh chives

1} Preheat your oven to 400 degrees. Pierce your potatoes all over with a fork and rub them with olive oil. Place in a foil lined baking sheet, bake at 400 degrees for 1 hour or until tender. Remove potatoes from the oven and reduce the heat to 350 degrees. 2} Let your potatoes stand and cool enough to handle. Cut your potato in half the long way. Scoop out the potato pulp and leave about ¼ inch attached to the skin to help hold it together. Place the potato pulp in a medium-sized bowl and mash. Add your parmesan cheese, butter, chopped chives, whipped cream or cool whip, salt, pepper and goat cheese chunks, and mash until smooth. Spoon the potato mixture into the sweet potato skins and place the filled skins back on your baking sheet, skin down. Bake for 20 minutes at 350 degrees until thoroughly heated. 3} Remove from the oven and Sprinkle crumbled bacon, crumbled goat cheese and fresh chopped chives as a garnish and serve. Enjoy!

Tips for Staying Well This Winter YORK In November, York Hospital hosted a community webinar addressing ways we can better cope with COVID-19 this holiday season and through the winter. Themes of resiliency, adaptation, and the importance of looking after each other and staying connected as a community were interwoven with the realities that the pandemic has created significant stress and grief across the globe. Many have lost loved ones and liveli-

hoods. Others have had to forego important life events such as weddings, graduations, milestone birthday celebrations, vacations, educational pursuits and more. With the pandemic now entering its ninth month and in the face of socially distanced, virtual holiday celebrations, people are understandably weary and at risk of feeling depressed. Dr. Kaplan shared the following tips for staying safe and well this winter: Isolation Busters Join a virtual book club

However, be cautious with in-person, indoor volunteering if you are over the age of 65 or considered to be immunocompromised; Connect virtually or in person with a few people who are also taking COVID-19 precautions seriously. Bundle up and take walks with them and/or share a home cooked meal or take out. Give the Gift of Self-Care Keep a regular sleep-wake cycle. Create a daily or weekly schedule; Exercise, exercise, exercise – for example walks, skiing, at home exercises, yoga (great free virtual yoga lessons on YouTube) and dance; Take virtual classes through adult education or online music or art lessons; Declutter and downsize your stuff (nonprofit thrift stores are eager for dona-

Stay Safe this Holiday Season Plan to celebrate with household members only; Avoid having larger holiday gatherings, especially with people from out of state; Plan to video conference with extended family during the holidays; College students returning from out of state should quarantine for two weeks; Do visit elderly relatives in state, but remain masked during the visits; Avoid work-related holiday parties; Do as much holiday shopping online to avoid exposure in stores; Avoid indoor restaurant dining but support local restaurants by ordering take out. Seek Help Dr. Kaplan also urged community members who are feeling extremely anxious or depressed not to be afraid to seek help. If you or a loved one is potentially feeling suicidal, call the statewide crisis number at Maine Crisis Hotline 1-888-568-1112 to be connected with a Sweetser crisis clinician;

Health & Fitness $25M Initiative to Fight Lyme Disease WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senator Susan Collins, a member of the Health Committee, announced the launch of LymeX, a new $25 million effort to fight tick-borne diseases. LymeX is the largest public-private partnership to combat Lyme disease in history and will provide awards to improve data about tick-borne diseases; raise awareness; and accelerate the discovery of diagnostic tools, testing, and implementation. Senator Collins, the author of the Kay Hagan Tick Act that became law last year, received a call today from Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Deputy Secretary Eric Hargan, who shared this positive development. LymeX is being led by HHS and the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation and will be housed within the HHS Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health, the coordinating agency developing the National Strategy to fight tick-borne diseases that was required by Senator Collins’ Tick Act. LymeX augments the Tick Act law and reinforces the federal focus on this priority. “This partnership is an exciting and promising development in our fight against tick-borne illnesses such as Lyme disease that affect hundreds of thousands of Americans every year. As the largest public-private partnership to combat Lyme disease in history, this initiative builds on the bipartisan TICK Act I authored and demonstrates that the federal government is focused on eradicating this public health threat,” said Senator Collins. “I remain committed to slowing the spread of these devastating diseases, and I will continue my efforts to protect Mainers’ health.” Specifically, LymeX will advance tick-borne disease innovation by incentivizing the development of next-generation diagnostics through a series of multi-million-dollar grand prize challenges. The first LymeX diagnostics prize will launch in 2021. These prizes will be open to U.S. universities, non-profit organizations, private-sector companies, and domestic organizations to improve diagnostics at all stages of Lyme disease. The initiative will also engage stakeholders to facilitate patient-centered innovations to address tick-borne diseases and increase education to raise

awareness about risk and prevention. The incidence of Lyme and other tick-borne diseases has exploded over the past 15 years. In 2003, Lyme disease infected around 30,000 Americans. The latest estimates show there are nearly half a million Americans suffering from Lyme. In Maine, there were a record 2,167 newly reported cases of Lyme disease last year, nearly triple the number of cases in 2010. Other tick-borne diseases are also on the rise – in Maine, for example, Anaplasmosis and Babesiosis have increased several-fold in this same period. LymeX will complement the three-pronged approach created by Senator Collins’ Tick Act law, which: Requires HHS to develop a National Strategy. This will help expand research, improve testing and treatment, and coordinate common efforts across federal

Bernier-Gelinas FUNERAL HOME

Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

bridge division. His “retirement” job was building trolleys for the Molly Corporation; finally retiring in 2018. Gary loved everything to do with the outdoors. He loved cutting and splitting firewood, gardening, fishing and took great pride in keeping the landscape of their home beautiful. As a family they loved their vacations at the lake and just enjoying the simple life. He will be remembered as a loving husband and father, hardworking, humble man; very modest and down to earth. His optimism in fighting this battle with cancer was astounding. He will be sorely missed by his wife of 34 years, Norma Jean (Morse) Gerard; their son Ben of Wells; brother Leo Gerard and Debbie Giles of Milton, NH, and their family; sisters-in-law Susan Place and Terry Benoit and their families; father-in-law Arthur Place and his wife Renee; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and his faithful companion puppy Bruce. A time of visitation was held Monday, January 4 followed by a funeral at the Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market Street, North Berwick. Friends who wish may contribute in his name to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 42040, Oklahoma City, OK 73123. Arrangements are entrusted to the Johnson Funeral Home where condolences may be expressed at www. johnsonfuneralhomeme.com. • • • • • • • • • •

...SAWTELLE from page 16 dren by his side. Clair was born in Shirley, ME, on April 12, 1931 to Wilson W. Sawtelle and Constance M. Sawtelle. Clair was the youngest of three sons. He started working in the logging industry at a young age and loved working in the woods. He enjoyed reminiscing about his experiences, and everyone loved hearing his stories. He enlisted in the Navy in June 1948 and served until June 1952. He served as an engineman on LST 279 while in the Navy although his dream was to serve on a fast-moving destroyer. He had many adventures during those years including the time he hitchhiked from Puerto Rico via boat, train, car to his family home in Shirley. He met and married the love of his life, Catherine J. Sawtelle (known lovingly as Kay) in Shirley. He always said the moment he saw her that was it, there was never anyone else. They married October 4, 1953 and had 52 years together until Kay’s passing in 2005. Clair started working as an apprentice at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery in July 1959. He worked his way up through the ranks to General Foreman of Shop 38 and retired April 30, 1986. During his years there he met many great men and created many friendships that lasted a lifetime. His shipyard buds knew him by his wearing of his hard hat crooked and gave him a nickname and always referred to him as “Hank”. Clair is survived by four

Linda Schoff, 74 YORK – Linda Schoff went home to be with her Lord on December 9, 2020, surrounded by family at her home in York, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Linda was born in York Hospital on April 7, 1946. She grew up in the area of Chases Pond, where she began her love for nature. She married her soul mate, Kenny Schoff, on May 13, 1967

and they built their home on Scituate Road where they went on to have six children and countless animals. As a mother and a wife, Linda was known as always putting her family and friends before herself. Linda was Kenny’s greatest encourager. She lived a sacrificial life with a consistently positive attitude. When not tending to her family, she could be found in her barn. Her love for animals was passed down to her children. “Miss Linda”, as many of her students knew her by, taught preschool-aged children at York Street Baptist Church for 30 years and also worked as a beloved teacher at Learning Tree Preschool. Linda was predeceased by her daughter Kerri, and parents Joseph “Fred” and Gladys (Smith) Osgood. She is survived by her husband Kenny of 53 years, daughter Kimberly (Schoff) with Kurt Hultstrom; four sons Michael with Jennifer (Hames), Aaron, Jeremy with Meaghan (Matthews), and Nathan with Kristina (Faskianos); sister and best friend, Nancy Graham; and loving brother John Osgood with wife Mary. Linda had unending love for her 15 grandchildren. Linda’s quiet and humble personality will be missed. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Alzheimer’s Disease Research, 22512 Gateway Center Drive, Clarksburg, MD 20871 or York Hospital Hospice, 127 Long Sands Road, York, ME 03909. Services were held in the First Parish Cemetery. Visit www.lucaseatonfuneralhome. com. • • • • • • • • • •

Engaging Ads with Poor Customer Service This category covers a broad spectrum of complaints that BBB receives, from ads for beauty products to trendy clothing to kids’ toys. The advertisements look great and the products are often inexpensive. This means that consumers purchase without doing any research into the website or the company behind it. However, weeks pass and the products never arrive. When the buyers reach out to customer service, they get a vague answer or they don’t hear back at all. Before buying, do a quick online search. Google the website name with the words “complaints,” “reviews,” and “scam” to see what other customers are saying. Check the “About Us” or “Contact Us” information on the company’s website to see if they contain actual contact details for the business. If the only way to contact the company is through a form this is a red flag. Apps of Unknown Origin While scrolling through your feed you may feel compelled to download the latest “free” app. Beware! as $99 every seven days. Before you enter your username and password, read the reviews. Also read the description of the app carefully and look for spelling and grammatical errors. Check that the developers website is a working website and read the terms and conditions carefully ($99 every 7 days adds up quickly). How to Protect Yourself from Social Media Scams Do your research. Before making a purchase, do a quick search for the business in question. Do they have valid contact information? Don’t be fooled by professional photography or consumer reviews on their website. These can be lifted from other sites. Check BBB Scam Tracker to see if others have been duped. Search for previous complaints. Do a Google search of the business name followed by “complaints,” “reviews,” or “scam” and see what pops up. If you find other people have been cheated by this business, steer clear. Use good judgment. Many con artists play on consumers’ desire to help those in need. Keep this in mind and use your head, not just your heart, when supporting charitable causes. Go to Give.org to research organizations before giving. For more ways to protect yourself and to share your experience, visit www.bbb.org.
