Remembering the Years Behind the Lens Spotlight Feature By Joyce Amend, Staff Writer WELLS It’s easy to see why astronauts, presidents and art collectors sought after Willene Whisenhant’s photographic images. Now retired, this charming artist is assertive, witty, and most of all extremely talented! A recent visit with Willene shed new light on this spunky woman of 84 years young. Her journey through life has taken her love of photography to many illustrious and exciting places. As she reflected upon her 67 years of experiences, told with incredible detail, this writer listened with awe and amazement.
Willene Whisenhant remembers years of photographing beautiful scenes like this one titled “Relax.
Willene’s career was sparked by her interest in photography as a young girl. She was the one who took all the family photos, and after graduating from University of Texas in Austin, she
secured a position with a local photography studio. Willene’s career took flight when she accepted a position at NASA, after it had moved to Houston in 1962. Previous to
Willene Whisenhant the NASA assignment, she had worked many years for a Texasbased photography studio. The private studio sent her on various locations to take photos. “I had my camera with me all times and would photograph anything and everything that would be good for the business, she said. In 1985, the oil crisis took its toll in Houston and her company began to go downhill. Handing out pink slips became a Friday ritual. “We quit bringing our lunch on Fridays because we didn’t know who would be let go before noon, she quipped. One of Willene’s colleagues suggested they go over to NASA and fill out applications. Fearing that she might be next
to get a pink slip, she agreed to go. NASA took her application and gave her an assignment to go out and take pictures in order to assess her work. They were impressed, and subsequently offered her a position. Willene would not commit to the NASA offer because she wanted to wait and see what happened with her present job, since she had been with that company for a long time. As it turned out, a pink slip was waiting for her when she returned, and she accepted the NASA position. This would be her employer for the next five years – one where she was the first and only woman working in See WILLENE page 23...

While many waters are open for ice fishing, that does not always mean they are safe on which to travel. For safety tips, visit www.mefishwildlife.com. Sebago Lakes Region Due to the early cold spell, some anglers have already been out on the ice catching fish. While the December warm spell put a damper on ice fishing activity in the region, more sea-
sonable temperatures will mean more ice fishing opportunities. “Crystal Lake (in Gray) has set up a few times, but then we get a little rain and some wind and it opens right up again, says IFW fisheries biologist Francis Brautigam. Biologists manage several ponds in the Sebago Lakes Region for ice fishing opportunities. Among them, anglers will have good luck at ponds such as Worthley Pond in Peru, Halls Pond in Paris, the Hinckley Ponds in South Portland and York Pond in Elliot. These ponds were stocked with catchable

When Tin Smith, president of Great Works Regional Land Trust, informed the Fortenbaughs of the chance to conserve 37 acres on Old County Road, they agreed to donate half the project amount. They also hosted a gathering for neighbors to learn about the $97,000 Grant purchase, named for the seller who offered a bargain sale but needed to close by year-end. “It was a pleasure to assist

in protecting the environment, while ensuring the attractiveness of Old County Road for years to come, said Bill Fortenbaugh. “Moreover, being joined by Mary Breen and other residents in supporting the purchase made giving a no-brainer. Mary Breen, owner of Bread & Roses Bakery in Ogunquit, was next in giving after the Fortenbaughs. She also catered the party where additional donations were generated. The deal was sealed through this timely generosity along with funds from the Mount A to the Sea Coalition Initiative (MtA2C), of which Great Works is a founding partner. Grant is one of nine projects completed or facilitated by Great Works this year. Taken together, about 280 acres were conserved in Berwick, South Berwick, Eliot, and Ogunquit— protecting a range of forests, river frontage, wetlands, and

farmland for wildlife habitat and corridors, water quality, recreational spaces, and agriculture. (See the list below.) “This has been a banner year for conservation because many donors and volunteers shared our goals and responded generously when we needed, said Tin Smith. “I want to thank the landowners, towns, community donors, friends from out of state, and other partners. Other completed projects meet long-term goals for conservation in the Beaver Dam Heath area and Salmon Falls watershed, affecting Berwick and other towns. Great Works also worked on a bargain sale by the owners of the woodland Bassett parcel, which the town of Ogunquit purchased with voter approval. Four other projects, along with Grant, satisfy Great Works’ objectives in Mt. A Region. The MtA2C is an effort led by a coalition of ten national, regional and local partners representing federal and governmental agencies, statewide land protection organizations and three local land trusts (including Great Works) to protect a network of connected conservation lands and natural resources within a 48,000-acre focus area in Southern Maine to benefit of See CONSERVE page 5...

with all trout, salmon and togue needed to be released at once. These ponds generally are stocked in the late fall with catchable trout. “Many of these ponds are managed for ice fishing, that’s why we don’t allow anglers to keep trout and salmon in October and November, said Brautigam. “Ice Anglers get the benefit of this late season stocking. If you are looking for some larger fish, the department stocked some togue in the 10-12 pound range in Mousam Lake, Little Ossippee and Long Lake. These larger fish are retired breeding fish and offer a great chance at a trophy size fish in these waters. Central and Midcoast Region If you are looking for the chance at some larger fish at the end of your line, you may want to head out onto Messalonskee Lake, Damariscotta Lake and Echo Lake. The department
stocked 12-15 pound lake trout in those lakes, providing anglers with an opportunity to land a lunker. Speaking of Echo Lake, IFW fisheries biologist Jason Seiders says that it is an interesting place to fish. Good smelt numbers in turn has meant good salmon growth. It’s also a good place for early season brook trout at the south end, which tends to set up earlier than other parts of the pond. Another pond that’s showing promise as a salmon water is Flying Pond in Vienna. According to Seiders, the smelt population is in high numbers, and not only are the salmon responding, but there’s trophy size browns there as well. “It’s a good place to catch multiple species of fish, said Seiders. Looking for other early season hot spots? Check out Levenseller Pond in Searsmont, which receives a fall stocking of both 12-14 brook trout and some larger trout in the 18 range. and Salmon and McGrath Pond in the Belgrades are also good choices. Remember, along with checking the ice for safety, remember to remove what you bring onto the ice. Access to many smaller ponds relies on landowners, and making sure that trash and other belongings are all removed when you are done fishing ensures that the ponds will remain accessible for all. Downeast Region There’s plenty of early season ice fishing opportunities waiting for you Downeast this winter. Looking to catch some brook trout? Try these early season waters such as Lovejoy pond in township 35 md, Lower Hadlock in Northeast Harbor, Fox Hole Pond (kids only regulations) in Deblois, Schoodic Lake in Cherryfield, Indian lake in Whiting, Keely Lake in Marshfield, Keenes Lake in Calais, Lakewood Pond in Bar Harbor, Lower Springy Pond in Otis, Fitts Pond in Clifton, The Penobscot County Conservation Pond (kids only) in Brewer, Montegale Pond in Centerville and MicMac Pond in Deblois. Most of these are smaller ponds, with many less than 100 acres according to IFW fisheries biologist Greg Burr. Most are stocked both in the spring and the fall, sometimes heavily, with a variety of different ages of fish. For ice fisherman, these ponds can offer some fast fishing for a variety of fish. Check your law book for opening dates and regulations. Moosehead Region If you are looking for a good bet for early season ice fishing, Jackman is a popular destination. “One of the best places for the first week is Big Wood Pond in Jackman,â€? says IFW fisheries biologist Tim Obrey. “Anglers there have a chance at catching trout, splake and salmon.â€? Anglers may also want to try Fitzgerald Pond in Big Moose Township, where there have been reports of anglers already catching trout. The pond is stocked heavily in the fall and is located between Greenville and Rockwood. Other ponds anglers might want to try out include Brann’s Mill in Dover and Harlow in Parkman. While both these ponds have bass and perch, they are stocked in the fall to provide for some ice fishing opportunities for trout. If you have a younger angler, take a trip to Drummond Pond in Abbot, it’s a kid’s only pond that’s stocked not only with trout in the 12-14â€? range, but also some larger ones over 17â€?. Jeannie Demetracopoulos, a former Board member and volunteer, worked with landowner Ruby Brooks and her family to create her legacy with Great Works. Ruby passed away in February 2013, and her family members cooperated on the transfer of this rich agricultural and forested resource she bequeathed to Great Works. The Elmina B. Sewall Foundation funded transaction costs while donations from individuals are supporting the stewardship of this large property. As 2014 was wrapping up, Great Works was busy fundraising for projects in Wells (Spiller Farm); North Berwick (Parker and Hilton farms). Voters in those towns, respectively, have already approved funding. Projects are also upcoming in farmlands, Mt. A and other areas. BUSINESS & FINANCE Help Sessions to Assist Families in Accessing College Financing
STATEWIDE If your child is planning to attend college, trade or technical school in the fall, January is when families should get serious about financial aid applications. For most families, financial aid has a significant impact on the college the student attends. To help parents navigate the financial aid process, the Finance Authority of Maine (FAME) will hold 27 In-Person
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Help Sessions around the state and has ongoing support online at FAMEmaine. com/FAFSA. Over eleven years, FAME has assisted more than 6,000 families. FAME asked Mila Tappan, College Access and Outreach Manager, to share five tips with families about how and when to get started. “Significant financial aid does exist, says Tappan,
You’ve heard the rumors about
REVERSE MORTGAGES Now get the FACTS call

“So everyone considering college should fill out the FAFSA and any other required financial aid applications as soon as possible. The earlier students apply, the more aid they may be eligible to receive. Tappan continued, “Funds are limited, so families need to understand the process to make sure they receive the maximum amount of financial aid. Tip #1: Just do it! Fill out the FAFSA! It is the federal application that all schools use to determine student eligibility for federal financial aid. Many states and schools use the FAFSA to distribute their own need-based financial aid. Tip #2: The “early bird sometimes gets the worm. Fill out the FAFSA as early as possible. The FAFSA for the 2015-2016 school year became available January 1, 2015 and can be found at www.fafsa.gov. Many types of financial aid are only awarded to students who meet the specified deadline (each state and school has their own deadline), and some schools award aid on a first-come first-served basis. Don’t wait until your taxes are done to file the FAFSA – estimate the information and update it later! Tip #3: Be prepared. Have the following information (if applicable) available when you sit down to complete the FAFSA: Social security numbers for the student and parent(s),
Maine Residents
driver’s license numbers for the student and parent(s), student and parent(s) federal tax information for 2014 (if taxes not yet filed, estimate using 2013 tax returns or 2014 W-2 form(s) or final pay stubs), records of any untaxed income, a list of student and parent assets, and a list of schools your child is considering. Tip #4: Make the time. Help is available. Years ago, the FAFSA had more questions and took a long time to complete. Now it is easier than ever and most families can finish the FAFSA in less than 30 minutes. If you need help, FAME offers InPersonal FAFSA Help Sessions and online support. 27 In-Person Help Sessions statewide in January and February with financial aid experts are available to assist families in completing the FAFSA form. To find an event, visit FAMEmaine. com/FAFSA. If families can’t attend an in-person help session, they can visit FAME for FASFA Online Help. There, they can download an information checklist and watch a video that offers tips on how to fill out the FAFSA form.
Families can also call 1-800228-3734 with questions. Tip #5: Do your homework. The FAFSA is just one step in the process. Here are other items to follow up on: Ask if the school(s) has any additional applications required to apply for the school’s financial aid. If income was estimated, update information on the FAFSA after taxes have been filed, ideally by using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool. Provide the school with any other required documentation or forms. Compare awards from each school by focusing on the “net price – the cost minus grants and scholarships (funds that don’t have to be repaid). Before borrowing any loans, understand the difference between federal and private student loans. Search for scholarships and continue to do so throughout the year. Scholarships Scholarships can take time See FAFSA page 11...

BUSINESS & FINANCE Unflinching in the Fight Against Fraud STATEWIDE If you’re like most people, you protect what’s valuable to you. To protect your family financially, you buy health and life insurance. To protect your home, you get homeowner’s insurance, a security alarm, or perhaps a large dog. To protect your jewelry, you hide it in a safe place or buy insurance in case you need to replace it. To protect your money, you invest it, perhaps in a bank that offers FDIC coverage. Social Security is much the same. We value the people we serve, our employees who work hard to provide world-
class customer service, and the integrity of our programs. We protect these by using many tools to identify, prevent, and stop fraud, and we seek the maximum punishment for those who commit it. The tools we use help us predict where fraud may occur, and, by monitoring cases closely, we identify fraud sooner rather than later. We also have stiff penalties that discourage people from committing fraud. Social Security has a zerotolerance policy for fraud. While we cannot prevent every instance of fraud any more than law enforcement can prevent all crime, we aggressively investigate and
pursue prosecution of those who try to cheat the system. Our message to those who would defraud Social Security is clear: We will find you; we will prosecute you; we will seek the maximum punishment allowable under the law; and we will fight to restore to the American public the money you’ve stolen. Social Security takes fraud seriously and so should you. If you suspect someone is committing Social Security fraud, report it online at http://oig.ssa.gov/ report or call the Social Security Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271.

“Glimpses of Nature Exhibit at Just Us Chickens KITTERY – Original interpretations of nature by our very own Jane Ansaldo Church, Louise Tragard and Cindy Sauve will kick off the new year at Just Us Chickens Gallery. The show will be on display through the month of January and will be part of the shop's Winter Celebration Day on Saturday, Jan. 17. Ansaldo Church has been a member of the Chickens artist co operative for over 5 years and was an elementary school teacher for 35 years in Portsmouth, NH. Her retirement now allows her time to have fun teaching art and creating for herself. Several years ago, she began her business, When Nature Speaks Art. Walks on the many beaches she visits are a part of who she is and she has collected heart shaped rocks, shells, driftwood and many other
things the ocean washes up. She has been very passionate about caring for our earth while enjoying the many gifts around us. About 8 years ago, she began taking her heart rocks on trips to various locations to photograph. She then began matting and mounting the photos creating her own heart rock cards which have become a niche for her. She also takes the seaweed, shells, rocks, dried flowers, driftwood, fabric, etc. that she finds and uses them to create wreaths, fish, collages and ornaments. Other creations include white starfish adorned with shells, sea glass and wire to create tree toppers and ornaments and angels all made from natural materials. Tragard has been doing photography and art for over 40 years (image shown above right). Her work is all play and experi-

Chronic Pain; Scams Targeting Seniors are Subjects of York County Senior College Lectures YORK COUNTY The management of physical pain, recently the subject of an extensive study in the Portland Press Herald, will come under further study in the York County Senior College's winter lecture season, which commences January 21. Dr. Ed Bilsky, tenured professor of Pharmacology and Director of the Center for Excellence in Neurosciences at the University of New England, and the 2014 Recipient of the Patient Advocacy Award
from the American Academy of Pain Medicine, will address the topic “Chronic Pain: A Public Health Crisis. Dr. Bilsky has spoken widely about pain and how to provide better treatment methods; his talk is certain to be of interest to many seniors. The afternoon speaker is York County Sheriff Bill King, a recognized leader in combating financial exploitation of the elderly. His lecture “Scams: How to Deal with Them, will help alert seniors about how to avoid being swindled by lottery
and other schemes. King has testified at the state level and before the Senate Special Committee on Aging regarding ways the elderly have been targeted and how officials can work together to avoid this abuse. The Gary Sullivan Memorial Lecture Series, featuring morning and afternoon speakers, offers a variety of topics of interest. Morning lectures take place from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., followed by lunch and a second lecture, held from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. All winter lectures
will be given at Denis Hall on the campus of the Brothers of Christian Instruction, 133 Shaker Hill Road, Alfred (off Route 202). The fee for each day’s program is $15 for York County Senior College members, $20 for non-members, payable at the door by cash or check made payable to the Brothers of
Christian Instruction, and includes a lunch of soup, salad, sandwiches, dessert and beverages, as well as coffee breaks. In case of inclement weather, if Sanford Schools cancel, so will Senior College. Call 207282-4030 for reservations by the Monday before each lecture.

The stuffy nose, aches and pains that often accompany the common cold can leave sufferers feeling miserable for a week or more. Cold season seems to kick into high gear when the temperatures drop, but this can be the year you don’t come down with a case of the sniffles. The following cold prevention tips can increase your chances of making it to spring without losing any days or sleep to the common cold. Keep kids clean. School-aged kids tend to carry home lots of germs, so when kids get home after a long day at school, make sure they wash their hands thoroughly and change into fresh outfits. Such precautionary measures can keep colds and other illnesses from running rampant through your house. Go outdoors and get some fresh air. It’s a myth that cold air will bring on a cold. In reality, being outside instead of congregating indoors with other sick people may decrease your risk of getting a cold. Don’t be afraid to go outside when the temperatures drop for fear of getting sick. Fresh air and exercise can be good for you. Drink plenty of fluids. Keeping your body hydrated will help flush toxins out of your body, strengthening your immune system and making it more capable of fending off colds. Keep your distance. Did you know the cold virus could be shot up to three feet away when someone sneezes? The virus travels on the small droplets of saliva and mucus that get propelled from the nose and mouth of a sick individual. If you know someone is sick, stay as far away as
possible and wash your hands frequently, paying special attention to your fingertips. Wipe down surfaces. The cold virus can live on surfaces for up to 24 hours. That means a sick person can easily transfer a virus by touching a computer keyboard or remote control he or she shares with others. Use disinfecting wipes or warm, soapy water to clean off doorknobs, telephones, light switches, cabinet handles, and anything that is frequently touched around a home or business.
tive at treating bacterial infections, not viruses, which means they are ineffective at fighting the cold virus. If you do get sick, play it smart. Should you succumb to a cold in spite of your best efforts, steer clear of others so you are not spreading the virus. Rest and fuel your body with healthy See COLDS page 15...

Let it out gently. Blowing your nose forcefully or pinching your nose to hold back sneezes can irritate nasal passageways and make them more vulnerable to infection. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. If you are well, keep your hands away from your mouth, nose and eyes. Viruses are especially good at entering the body through the mucus membranes located in these areas of the body. A combination of frequent handwashing and avoiding touching your face can keep colds at bay. Maintain your exercise routine. Regular exercise can boost the body’s immune system and help it to fend off foreign invaders, including the cold virus. A recent study found that taking vitamin C in addition to daily exercise can reduce your risk of cold and cut the duration of the cold should you get one. Before taking any supplements, speak with your doctor to make sure they won’t interact negatively with other medications.

that had recently converted to natural gas but did not notify its oil company. As more homeowners convert to natural gas, they should make sure to notify their former oil delivery company of the change. Note that if you have converted your heating system to natural gas, the fill pipe of the oil tank must be removed. This helps prevent oil from being delivered accidentally to your house. Overfills during delivery are the third leading cause of residential tank spills in Maine, and can be prevented by a licensed oil technician installing a vent whistle, which sounds until the tank is full. “In addition to a costly clean-up and fuel replacement, releases from home heating oil tanks can contaminate drinking water, degrade air quality, lead to lower property values and harm the environment, explained DEP Commissioner Patricia Aho. “Fortunately, the leading causes of leaks are preventable. By taking just a few small steps to care for your tank, you are protecting our environment, your family’s health and your pocketbook. If you spill any fuel or if you witness a spill or think there is a threat of one, please report it immediately to Maine DEP’s 24-hour oil spill emergency spill response hotline at 1-800-482-0777. Of the 2,500 oil and hazardous spills DEP Response Services responds to annually, at least one per day involves a home heating oil tank. In 2013, the department responded to over 550 home heating tank spills with an estimated 12,000 gallons of petroleum spilled. The leading causes of home heating tank spills are internal corrosion, physical tank damage and overfilling. DEP recommends that homeowners have a licensed technician assess their tank’s condition. Internal corrosion – caused by water and sludge build-up – isn’t often visible to a homeowner. A technician’s inspection can often determine if minor corrections are needed or a tank replacement is necessary. If needed, the technician can recommend a reliable replacement – like a double-bottom steel tank or a corrosion-proof tank made of polyethylene or fiberglass – before the tank fails. Falling ice and sliding snow are well known causes of exterior tank damages. To address this cause of home heating oil spills, DEP suggests homeowners with tanks outside have their licensed oil technician install a steel filter protector, keep their tank clear of snow throughout the winter by shoveling it out after each storm, and carefully and regularly remove snow and ice from the roof above to prevent slides. DEP has seen an increase of oil delivery companies accidentally delivering oil to a home

Health & Fitness What is the Right Age for Braces? Dental braces have been used for decades to correct various alignment and spacing issues in the teeth. Braces can be crucial to the future of one’s oral health and prevent serious issues down the line. Roughly 25 percent of the people in North America who get braces are adults. But braces still are geared toward young people and getting them on the road to straight and properly aligned teeth early on. Braces correct a number of problems, including realigning the jaw and alleviating overcrowding of teeth. Crooked teeth can trap food and debris between them, making it harder to floss and brush. Wearing braces also corrects the bite. If teeth or jaws are not aligned correctly, it can lead to difficulty chewing food or create jaw muscle pain. Braces also may boost self-confidence because they can remedy appearance issues that may prove embarrassing. Parents eager to get their children on the road to straighter teeth may wonder when is the right time to get their kids braces. Many kids are getting braces earlier and earlier, but when to get braces typically depends on the child and the shape of his or her teeth. The American Association of Orthodontics recommends that children see an orthodontist for an evaluation by age seven. The best time for braces will be when the orthodontist and parents collectively decide it’s time to correct the misalignment of a child’s teeth. Some orthodontists prefer a two-stage approach to orthodontic treatment. They may use a dental appliance or a preliminary amount of braces to begin moving the teeth while a child still has most of his primary teeth. The second stage begins when all the permanent teeth are in. The thought is to ...COLDS from page 13 foods and beverages. shorten the overall duration of treatment. Other orthodontists follow the traditional approach of putting on braces once all the primary teeth have fallen out. This occurs between ages nine and 14. This is often a less expensive approach because braces need only be applied and removed once. A number of studies have shown that, for common problems alleviated with orthodontic work, youngsters are better off waiting until all of their permanent teeth have come in. Antonio Secchi, a professor of orthodontics at the University of Pennsylvania, notes that if parents choose to treat crooked teeth too early, the child may need another phase of intervention a few years down the road. Some problems, like crossbites, overbites or severe overcrowding, warrant early intervention. Scheduling an orthodontic

WEST KENNEBUNK – Meet Ozzy Ozzy is a handsome, fun, loving 3-year old Cattle Dog mix who is quite the curious and playful boy. He loves having a variety of toys around to chomp on. But he’s not always content with just his toys, so best keep an eye on him lest he start picking new “toys out of the trash. Ozzy is rather mellow, not one to make a whole lot of noise when interesting things are afoot. He is eager to find out everything that’s going on though, and will pace about and keep a close eye on interesting events. He hasn’t yet mastered all his commands, so he would make a good candidate for an obedience class like the ones we offer at the shelter with discounted rates for adoptees. Ozzy would be happy to share a new home with other dogs and older children. Meet Abby Abby is an 11-year old shorthaired cat who may be a senior, but is just as sweet and loving as a kitten. She loves having people come to visit so she can get some attention and will almost always come right up to meet them. Abby is diabetic, so she will need to remain on a special diet in her new home. Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS – The Weekly Sentinel has been such a good friend to Safe Haven though out the years. We remember, with great affection, founder Mark Wilcox and his constant companion Cruiser, and miss them both dearly. The publisher, Carol Brennan, has continued to be very kind and generous to our organization, and we were recently very touched by her generous donation. To all the talented, hard working associates at The Sentinel, we appreciate all your help and support! Our heartfelt thanks to Karl and Jacqueline Epper for their generous donations also. Our supporters have allowed us to continue renovating our adoption center. Rex Lambert, our capital campaign chairman and brilliant contractor, has led his small team in transforming a once-rundown building into a practically new one! His expertise, quality carpentry and creative thinking show in every inch. We cannot express enough gratitude to Rex and his wife Judy for making our greatest dream come true. We’re still planning to move in late February, and we’re getting more and more excited as the dream becomes a reality for us and our
beloved kitties. Additional donations are urgently needed now, as the new heating system, drywall expenses and insulation are a huge challenge. Please consider making a donation to our capital fund! No matter how big or small the amount, it all adds up! GiGi is a young mama kitty, looking for a forever home with her 16-week-old female kitten Harlow. GiGi’s past history as a street stray makes her all the more deserving of finally having a home of her very own. She had lived under cars,

under tool sheds and huddled shivering, waiting near a dumpster for food. She’s very loved in her foster home, but now it’s time for her to get her very own wonderful forever home! GiGi and Harlow are tightly bonded and must be adopted as a pair, so we’ll waive the adoption fee for mama. Safe Haven always waives the fee of mother cats, because we believe they deserve to be rewarded with a new loving home with one of their kittens. The devotion and affection they have for one another lasts a lifetime. GiGi is a wonderful medium haired black kitty, who loves people and greets them at the door. She loves her kittens and carries toys to them, mewing all the way, happy to bring her babies a gift. Her darling kitten Harlow is also very sweet. She’s a real lap kitty. Small and petite, she’s half the size of her littermates. Both are beautiful, precious and affectionate, and will give abundant love to the lucky household who makes them part of their family. She has spent some time in a foster farm, so she is used to living in a horse barn. J.P. recently had a harmless cyst removed from her back, so she still has some visible stitches.

Sauerkraut came into ACAR from a tenant/landlord dispute that threatened the family with eviction. The family had animals in violation of their lease and the decision had to be made to place Sauerkraut and several other family pets immediately

This lovely lady is a long hair Tortoiseshell feline who will do very well with any and all members of the family except dogs. Sauerkraut has a serious fear of dogs, even very gentle dogs. Her vaccinations are current and she has passed her wellness exam. Sauerkraut is looking for

~ News ~ ...WILLENE from page 1 the public relations department at NASA in Houston. Her assignments at NASA were “really so unbelievable,” she said. “We would photograph the astronauts’ hands and ears because we had to know whose hand it was if something happened. We had to be able to identify the astronaut from seeing only their body parts.” Willene worked closely with the early astronauts, photographing them working at various activities. “John Glenn was the first one to become an astronaut and I photographed him at work, doing everything and anything”. Glenn had a special cigarette case made for Willene with faces of the astronauts engraved on them. The case disappeared during a meeting with a noted news reporter and was gone forever. The case had been in her possession for one and a half years before its ‘disappearance’. Willene remembers the
time when a U.S. Senator came to Houston and asked a local camera store to recommend a good photographer. He was given Willene’s name and he watched her work at another wedding before hiring her. The senator was very impressed with her work and asked for her cards so that he could spread the word to others that came to Houston from Washington. The hours at NASA were long and exhausting. During the last Mercury flight, Willene went to work at 3 a.m. and stayed until 7 p.m. the next day. Her life was not her own, and she was ready to make a change. Willene had vacationed in Maine for 13 years before taking up permanent residence in 1985. She worked in antique shops for nine years and resumed her photography work, concentrating on her specialties: outdoor scenes, landscapes and weddings. She displayed her work in various local tourist shops and eventually developed a following. During
an exhibit of her work during a Christmas Prelude in Kennebunkport, one of her photographs caught the eye of Barbara Bush, wife of former President Bush. Mrs. Bush instructed one of her security guards to make the purchase. That acquisition became the first of several photographs that were later purchased by Mrs. Bush. Willene’s growing business, Scenes by Willene, was becoming well known. Willene was assigned to photograph President Kennedy’s three visits to New England in 1962 and 1963. President Kennedy treated her very well because his wife, Jackie, had been a photographer, and he wanted Willene to have opportunities that were difficult for women in this field at that time. Willene tells the story of her signature photo “Icy Morning”. She was on her way to photograph pictures of the Nubble Light sea smoke in York, Maine on Christmas morning in 1989. For some reason, she was drawn
to travel down Route 1A, where she was greeted by a beautiful view of the sunrise with light on the sea. The ice covered trees presented a surrealistic glow and she stopped the car, grabbed her camera and took three photos of the beautiful vista. Mrs. Bush’s first purchase was one of those photos. “That was my biggest seller, and this one, “Relax”, at Perkins Cove,” she said pointing to a photograph on the wall. Willene never used a digital camera. “That’s a dirty word.” When asked what her favorite subjects were, she replied “I used to enjoy photographing anything somebody wanted me to capture, and while there photographing, they would ask me to take pictures of some of their flowers. I started putting them (floral photos) in the my collection to take to shows where I was asked by others to go to their homes and take photos of flowers.” Willene’s last exhibit of her work was in 2010 at the Wells Public Library. A resident

of Wells now for 30 years, she enjoys reminiscing about her photography days and capturing the beauty of New England’s seasons and the exciting career she had. Her works are still enjoyed as they now hang in offices, lodgings, restaurants, and homes throughout the US, Canada, Japan, England, Russia, Switzerland, Austria, Scotland, Ireland, Belgium and Australia.

~ News ~ Maine Birder Band Now Available STATEWIDE Maine’s Birder band is instrumental in helping protect birds, conserve habitat and provide access for birders throughout the state. Get yours at the State of Maine Department of Inland fisheries and Wildlife (IFW) online store at www.informe.org For $20, you will receive an authentic bird band similar to ones that biologists use to band wild turkeys and Canada geese. The band is meant to fit on a camera or binocular strap and has a unique number registered in your name. If this item becomes lost, the finder can call the IFW number on the band and the item can be returned to the owner. Over the years, this band has returned several pairs of binoculars and a set of car keys. New this year: with the purchase of your birder band, you’ll receive some valuable added extras including a day pass to
the Maine Wildlife Park (www. mainewildlifepark.com) in Gray, and a day pass to Swan Island (www.maine.gov/swanisland) in Richmond. Birder bands make great gifts! If you are looking to purchase one for someone else, please contact 207-287-8000, and order over the phone. Your donation helps Maine’s non-game birds. While some game birds such as waterfowl receive dedicated federal funds, over 90 percent of Maine’s 292 bird species do not. The Maine Birder Band has already generated over $20,000 that goes directly to helping protect Maine’s non-game birds. Money raised by the birder band can be used to leverage additional federal funds. Over the years the band has helped fund several conservation and educational projects, including the launch and maintenance of the Maine eBird Portal; grass-
Garden Club Makes Holiday Centerpieces SPRINGVALE Southern Maine Garden Club (SMGC) met for a special workshop in December, 2014, taught by Mary Ann Kane, from South Berwick. Mary Stewart-Dore, SMGC President and some club members, did a lot of prep work by cutting greenery, holly and pinecones on her nearby land for the club members to use. There were balsam, arborvitae, spruce, cedar, Scotch pine, as well as holly and winterberries as well as magnolia leaves and eucalyptus pods. Different members also hopper sparrows survey at Kennebunk Plains and the former Naval Air Station in Brunswick; research examining saltmarsh sparrow nesting success in sites with and without tidal restrictions and Southern Maine shorebird monitoring focused on sanderlings, red knots, black bellied plovers and ruddy turnstones.
brought in ribbon, candles, birds and other decorative ornaments to add to their masterpieces. At the end, everyone had a beautiful centerpiece to grace their holiday tables and impress their family and friends. SMGC meets throughout the year at the Springvale Library on the third Wednesday of every month beginning at 6:45 p.m. (unless otherwise noted). The next scheduled meeting will be the Club’s Christmas party at a
private home; but will meet on the 3rd Wednesday of the month of January and the presentation will be on preserving our summer and fall harvests. The speaker will be Sydney Sirois from Sirois Family Farm in Lebanon. It will take place at the Springvale Library at 443 Main Street, Springvale, at 6:30 p.m. and all are invited. For more information, call Mary Stewart-Dore at 207-4901833 or Donna Claveau at 603332-4860.

Dear Arla, There are a couple of approaches to cleaning out unneeded files and folders on your computer. You can let your computer (or a program) clean it out for you, and/or you can manually go in and clean out files yourself. To start with, you should clean out temporary files. You can use the, "Disk Cleanup" application to do this. Just go to "My Computer" or "Computer" or open Windows Explorer and click on "Computer" or "This PC" (if using Windows 8). Right click

Actually, your Outlook (not Outlook Express or Outlook.com, but Microsoft Office Outlook) mail and everything in it is in one file that is easy to backup. All you have to do is find it. Outlook stores all your messages, contacts and calendar entries in one file called a post office file. It ends with .pst. Here is how to find your .pst file: Start Outlook. On the Tools menu, click Options. On the Mail Setup tab, click the Data Files button. Note the path and file name of your .pst file. For example, C: \Exchange\Mailbox.pst indicates a .pst file that is named Mailbox.pst located in the Exchange folder on your drive C. Click Close, click OK, and then click Exit and Log Off on the File menu to quit Outlook. Now that you know where the file is located, you can copy it to your remote hard drive. On the Start menu, point to Programs, and then click Windows Explorer. Browse through the files to the location of your .pst file. Drag to copy your .pst file to the location that you want. Dear Betsy,
ALL-WHEEL DRIVE SALES EVENT
ALL-WHEEL DRIVE SALES EVENT
Dear Computer Lady, My Dell Inspiron desktop computer is 6 years old and came with Vista. Now Vista is on the way out. I have saved a lot of family pictures, genealogy and other important stuff on Outlook Mail. I was assured by a friend that a technician can transfer everything to a new computer. I would like to save ALL the things on Outlook 2007 to my WD 1.5T remote hard drive. I wonder if it is possible for me to save this to my remote hard drive, just so I don’t lose it all... just in case. If so, how computer savvy must one be? Thank you! Betsy
Dear Lynda, Bing is Microsoft's search engine, similar to Google and Yahoo, but owned by Microsoft. Most computers now come with Bing as the only installed search engine, but it is not usually invasive, so you might have some sort of Bing toolbar installed as well. Your first step in getting Bing off your laptop, is to visit the Control Panel and uninstall any Bing toolbars or helpers that you find there. Simply open the Control Panel, click on "Uninstall A Program" and look through the list of installed

programs. When you find something you want to remove, click once on it, and then click, "Uninstall" in the menu bar at the top of the window. Next, you will need to select your desired search engine. Open Internet Explorer and click on the gear icon in the upper-right corner of the window. In the dropdown menu, click on "Manage Ad- ons". Click on "Search Providers" in the left section of the window, and then right click on "Bing" and click "remove" in the context menu that appears. Hope this helps you get your computer working the way you want it to. Elizabeth
is to put them on the new computer, but in a folder on your desktop. As you need/use files, you can transfer them to your Documents or other folders. After 6 months or so, you can go through the folder on your desktop and decide if you want to keep the remaining, unused files. You could also have all the document files saved on a CD or DVD and copy files to your computer as you need them. You can then save the disk in the event you ever need to go back and find your old file. Elizabeth
on your "Local Disk (C)" drive and click on "Properties" in the context menu that appears. In the Properties dialog box, click on "Disk Cleanup" and follow the prompts to clean out your files. You can also use a program like Ccleaner at www.piriform. com to do a slightly more thorough cleaning. For files that you have downloaded, or created and saved in your Documents, pictures and music folders, only you can decide what is needed and not needed. You will need to go through those folders yourself and delete files that you no longer want or need. One good way to clean out those files when you transfer to a new computer
