Winter Seabirds at the Cliff House
CAPE NEDDICK York County Audubon is very pleased to host a workshop on winter seabirds on Saturday, January 25 at the Cliff House, 591 Shore Road in Cape Neddick. Seabirds are, by their very nature, enigmatic and difficult to observe closely. They are superbly adapted for life out at sea, specialized in a myriad of ways to fill every niche in an environment that may seem harsh and desolate to us. Even in Maine where seabirds are present in large numbers, getting close enough to begin to understand their fasci-
nating lives can be tough, especially as they face growing conservation challenges. This program will start with an overview of seabird ecology, from how they find food at sea, to their incredible migration strategies, before focusing on the species that can be found in Maine in the winter, from razorbills and murres to gulls and sea ducks. We will then conduct a ‘sea-watch’ from the coastal cliffs, learning to identify passing birds, including, hopefully, some passing rarities. This workshop will be held from 8:30 a.m. till 12:30 p.m. at

Collin grew up in Novato, CA, and Spotsylvania, VA, then spent a few years in Baton Rouge, LA, and Ann Arbor, MI, before settling in Boca Raton, FL. He loved the beach, the sun, working out, the outdoors, kayaking, zip-lining, and to challenge himself physically. He was strong and powerful, yet had a gentle and kind spirit. He was generous with his time, energy and resources, and was richly rewarded with a network of friends who truly cared for him and were there when he was in need. He was blessed by a legion of friends and family who celebrated with him during the good times and stood by him and prayed for him during the dark ones. We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

bereaved’s feelings in the patterns of community support which are psychologically beneficial. Flowers, however, express the inexpressible – they are symbolic.
missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

Safe Haven Humane Society
WELLS Safe Haven has been Miss Poppy’s home for years. She was adopted once but was returned due to a family matter. Sad, because this shy kitty was doing well and enjoying the first real home she ever had. We ache seeing shy kitties lose out time after time, just because they’re shy. Those cats need the chance more than others. Miss Poppy is a valiant hero, a feral mother with a broken front leg, who hunted for food and defended her three kittens. When spotted, she was given food outside so she could
survive. Her tiny kittens were helpless so she had to hunt and eat quickly to hurry back to keep them warm and protect them from predators. With a broken leg, it’s no wonder she was skin and bones when she was finally caught by Safe Haven volunteers. She diligently kept watch over her babies in their cozy environment at our shelter. The vet put her leg in a cast, and she and her kittens slowly began to trust us. Her kittens were all adopted and so was Miss Poppy but she was returned to us due to her owner’s health issues. It’s
Another Chance Animal Rescue NORTH BERWICK Introducing our rambunctious boy Rambo. He’s a 2-3 year -ld guy with the cutest little bobtail. Rambo is very playful and will sometimes play rough with other cats. For that reason we would like to find a home for him to be the only cat. He is nice to humans and great with respectful children. He’s just a really great cat who is tired of being in a cage as our Free Roam Community room stresses him out far too much. We are making Rambo available on our ‘Foster to Adopt’ program that we reserve for many of our amazing yet tougher to place due to them needing more specific homes kinds of kitties in need of “Another Chance”. How it works...You agree to take him for 3 weeks, which gives him the space to stretch his legs, and it gives you the opportunity to see if he is the cat for you. At the end of that time you either return him or adopt him. We would love to discuss this with you if you think you might like to take

no wonder Miss Poppy is wary, guarded. But she’s proven that she comes out of her protective shell once she’s in a home. We’re hoping someone with a sense of compassion reads this and considers adopting this deserving kitty. There is no fee because she’s a senior kitty, now around 10 years old. She’s in great health and deserves a real home and a real friend. Please call 207-646-1611 or 207-2298314 to set up an appointment to visit Miss Poppy. Our shelter remains closed to the public. Animal Welfare Society KENNEBUNK My name is Precious and no, I am not a bowling ball. I know I may look like one with my rather round physique and black fur but trust me, no bowling ball could ever be as sweet and cuddly as I am! In fact, one of my favorite past times is rolling around on the floor while humans lavish me with attention. I guess my shape is just built for it! I really have been enjoying my time here at AWS but as an older gal I think it’s about time for my new family to come and find me! All I really want is a nice lap to curl up on or perhaps a sunny spot
to warm my soft fur. I prefer quiet places with little traffic and people who understand that I like the calm and the serenity of being with my thoughts. And hey, I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not a fan of other felines or those drooly dogs, but I am a super fan of my people and the mutual love that we can share! So what do you think? Wanna give me chance? I promise to be the snuggliest little kitty you’ll ever meet! Precious is waiting to meet you at AWS. The Adoption Center is open daily (except Wednesdays) from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. You can find more in-
a.m. - 5 p.m. seven days a week. We welcome donations of good quality housewares, clothing, jewelry, fashion accessories and unique items. Call 207-229-8314 for questions.

Since the Surgeon General’s initial tobacco report was released in 1964, scientific knowledge regarding the detrimental health effects of tobacco has greatly increased. In the US alone, tobacco use is one of the most preventable causes of death and disease. Smoking has been attributed to over 480,000 deaths annually (one in five deaths). For every-one person whose death is caused by tobacco use, approximately 20 people suffer with one major tobacco-related illness such as: asthma, bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), upper and lower respiratory tract cancer, heart disease, stroke, impaired circulation due to vasoconstriction, bone demineralization, etc. Ninety percent of all lung cancer deaths in both males and females are due to smoking. More women die from lung cancer than they do from breast cancer and smoking during pregnancy increases infant and maternal morbidity and mortality rates. In addition, second-hand smoke increases the incidences of acute respiratory infections, ear infections, asthma, heart disease, lung cancer, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), and accounts for 41,000 deaths annually. In 2018, 13.7 % of the adult population smoked. Despite knowing the adverse health effects of this addiction, thousands of young people continue to initiate smoking daily. It is now 2020, and death from tobacco-related illnesses continues to rise. Smoking is not only a public health concern; it also has economic ramifications when populations are increasingly unhealthy and/ or hospitalized with tobaccorelated illnesses. According to the Centers for Disease Control, over $300 billion dollars is spent annually on patients diagnosed with tobacco-related illnesses. This evidence-based information should prompt all health care providers to take into action the continuous evaluation of smokers and their

Five Easy Tips to Keep Families Healthy in 2020 PORTLAND MaineHealth offers five simple things everyone can do right now to help keep loved ones healthy through winter… and for years to come. 1. Get the flu vaccine. This year’s flu season is on track to be severe. Widespread flu activity has already been reported in both Maine and New Hampshire. It is not too late to get vaccinated, since flu usually peaks in the
winter. A yearly flu shot reduces chances of getting the disease and prevent the spread to family, friends and vulnerable people. And for those who get a flu shot and still get sick, symptoms tend to be milder and not last as long. The flu vaccine is recommended for everyone six months and up. 2. Keep babies up-to-date on immunizations. Immunizations help protect your baby and others from 14 serious diseases.

On-time vaccination is the safest and best way to protect babies, family and community. Talk to child’s primary care provider to make sure they are on track with the recommended immunization schedule. 3. Teens and preteens need immunizations, too! Maine high schools have already reported outbreaks of pertussis (whooping cough) this school year. Last year, nearly half of all pertussis cases in Maine occurred in children ages 11-18. In addition to receiving the Tdap vaccine (which protects against pertussis, diphtheria and tetanus), teens and preteens should receive vaccinations for meningococcal disease and HPV. Check with your health care provider to make sure your teen or preteen is up-to-date. 4. Get outside. From ice skating to getting outside for a snowball fight or a simple walk around the neighborhood, we are fortunate to have so many options for winter activities. Aim for least 30 minutes of activity each day to get energized and help lift your mood. 5. Make the healthier choice. Take small steps like drinking more water and fewer sugary drinks, eating more whole grains and fruits and vegetables and limiting recreational screen time. To learn more about the five tips mentioned here and other things you can do to keep your family healthy, visit www. mainehealth.org.

Health & Fitness Foods That Promote Healthy Hair and Skin Millions of people across the globe deal with conditions that affect the skin and hair. Acne is a skin and hair ailment that, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, is the most common skin condition in the United States. But what if the foods people eat could affect the health of their hair and skin? There is evidence that they can. Foods that contain certain nutrients, phytochemicals and enzymes may help people develop healthier hair and skin. Blueberries: The U.S. Department of Agriculture gave blueberries its top ranking for antioxidant activity. The antioxidants in blueberries neutralize free radicals and protect people from premature aging, which can help the skin look younger and more vibrant. Eggs: Eggs are great sources of protein and biotin, which are two nutrients that may help promote hair growth. The health and wellness information site Healthline says biotin is essential for the production of a hair protein called keratin. Fatty fish: Fatty fish, such as salmon, are high in omega-3 fatty acids. Ciara Foy, a Toronto-based holistic nutritionist, says about 3 percent of the hair
shaft is made up of omega-3 fatty acids. They’re also found in cell membranes and in the natural oils that keep the scalp and other areas of the skin hydrated. Red bell peppers: These peppers contain more vitamin C than oranges. According to dermatologist Dr. Julia Carroll with Compass Dermatology, vitamin C is an antioxidant precursor to collagen production, so consuming more vitamin C through ...ADDRESS from page 4 200th year of statehood. Last year alone, we expanded Medicaid, unveiled a new economic development strategy, and embraced clean, renewable energy to help us create jobs and fight climate change,” said Governor Mills. “But there is more work to do. We can improve health insurance for Maine people and small businesses. We can strengthen and diversify our economy to ensure every person is able to get a good-paying job across the state. And we can protect our environment and invest in clean energy so that future generations can know and love Maine as we do today. I look forward to sharing my vision for our state and to setting us on a path of hope and prosperity as we begin our next two hundred years.”

foods can neutralize free radicals that could damage skin. Spinach: Trade lettuce for spinach, which is rich in calcium, iron, magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids, and much more. These nutrients can be the building blocks of healthy skin and hair. Oysters: Nutritionist and author Lisa Drayer says oysters are good sources of zinc, which aids in skin cell renewal and repair. Coconut: Coconut water is great for hydration and contains potassium, an electrolyte that moves nutrients into the cells. Coconut oil also can be used to boost hair health as a pre-wash conditioning treatment.
Psoriasis is a common skin ailment that affects approximately 7.5 million people in the United States, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. While psoriasis affects people in all age groups, it is primarily seen in adults — with the highest rates of affliction among those between the ages of 45 and 64. The most common form of psoriasis is

Between 25 and 30 percent of those with psoriasis will also experience complementary joint inflammation that produces symptoms of arthritis. This is called psoriatic arthritis. Although there is no cure for psoriasis, which is believed to be an autoimmune disorder, it can be managed with topical treatments for mild cases or immune-suppressing medications for severe cases. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~
Dear Computer Lady, The PC Info page on my computer says that I have 16GB of RAM, but only 1.95GB is available. Even when I reboot the computer and check, it is still this way. Can you help me? Luis Dear Luis, It sounds like something on your computer is using a lot of RAM. You just need to find out what it is. The first thing that comes to mind is your graphics. Some computers have a graphics card with RAM on the card. They don’t use the system RAM. Other computers have the graphics on the motherboard, and they use part of the system RAM for your display. To see what is hogging

your RAM, follow the steps below: 1. Open Task Manager, by right clicking on the “Start” flag then click on “Task Manager. 2. In the Task Manager, click on the “Processes” tab. 3. In the Processes page, click the top of the “Memory” column to sort by the amount of RAM used. The programs using the most memory will be at the top of the list. Now, you will be able to see what is using the most RAM, and take steps to disable or uninstall the program. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to help all of us… we really appreciate it. When I reboot my computer, (which is not often) this message always comes up and I’m not sure if it is something I should worry about. wweb32.exe – system error
wwweb32,dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling to fix this problem. I have no idea what it is or if I need it?? Thanks so much for your help. Toby Dear Toby, Those two files belong to a free dictionary program called Word Web, available at http:// wordweb.info/free/. My guess is that it has somehow become corrupted. You don’t need to worry about the error message, but to fix it, you can always download and install the program again. Also, if I may make a suggestion, your computer will run better if you reboot every day or two. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Thanks for all the work you do for us old folks. I downloaded Windows 10 on my computer running Windows 7. I do not have the search window. Windows 10 states to use the

Dear Jack, There are several ways to search in Windows 10, some are more obvious than others. When you tap the windows logo key on your keyboard, the start menu will appear, and while there is no visible search box, if you just start typing the name of what you are looking for, Windows 10 will start searching as you type. This is my favorite way to search, and it works in Windows 7-10. In Windows 10, the start button is a white windows logo flag usually located at the left edge of the taskbar. First, right next to the start button is a magnifying glass icon. Click on that icon to access Cortana, the Windows 10 search app. You can customize Cortana to help you with searching and reminders, or you can just search in the box that says, “Search the web and Windows”. You can also access the Cortana search when you rightclick on the start button and click on “Search” in the context menu that appears. If you are looking for a file, just open Windows explorer and navigate to the folder where you think the file is located, for example, Documents. In Windows Explorer, there is a search
Dear Computer Lady, I have an old computer that died some years ago. There are some Autocad drawings that I would like to salvage on an external drive. The problem is that my monitor is not getting any signal from the computer, so I cannot see anything on the screen. Is there anything I can do or just redraw my work from scratch? At the end I will get rid of the computer after I remove the hard drive. Thanks a lot. Sincerely, Roumiana Dear Roumiana, After reading your question, I was not sure if your drawings are on an external drive, or if you want to get them off the old computer and onto an external drive. If they are on an external drive, then the best solution would be to hook the drive up to a working computer. If your autocad drawings are on the old computer that is no longer working, the hard drive will need to be removed and the files salvaged from the drive. Your best bet is to find your local computer repair shop and have them save the files to your external drive for you. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? cepting employers’ offers to match, recent data from the retirement planning specialists at Financial Engines indicates that many employees are not taking advantage of these offers when given the chance. A recent survey from Financial Engines found that $24 billion in 401(k) matches goes unclaimed ever year, with the typical employee missing out on more than $1,300 in matches annually. Over time, money left on the matching table could deny retirees tens of thousands of dollars, if not more. Accepting an employer’s offer to match is essentially accepting free money, making it something all investors should do if given the chance.
