event coordinator. “It’s a great opportunity to beat the winter doldrums with a fun-filled night out among a great group of friends and neighbors.” Kicking off at 6 p.m. with a full cash bar plus cheese and crackers, the ball will feature music throughout the night by local DJ Stevie J. A full course buffet dinner is being carefully crafted by Spring Hill’s Special Event Chef, Maria Induisi-Richardson. Delectable desserts will top off the culinary delights. Both a live auction and a penny auction will give ball-goers the opportunity to get some great values on sought-after products and services. Among the items to be auctioned are ski tickets, Patriot and Red Sox memorabilia, liquor baskets, a Budweiser cart, hand crafted items, massages and more. Additional items are being added to the auction list throughout the month.

The Snow Ball will raise funds to help finish the historical society’s post-andbeam barn being constructed on Old County Road as a future education center.

Dancing will follow the auction with Stevie J. playing requests from his collection of music of every era. The bar will remain open for the duration of the evening. Tickets may be obtained by mailing a check made out to “The North Berwick Historical Society” to: Melissa John-

International Golden Retriever Rescue and Adoption

KENNEBUNK The Camden Conference

presents Peter Fitzgerald, Emeritus Professor of Law, and Allyson MacKenna, Executive Director of Yankee Golden Retriever Rescue, at the Kennebunk Free Library on Tuesday, January 22 at 6 p.m. Their talk, “From Chinese Streets to American Homes: International Golden Retriever Rescue and Adoption, is free and open to all. In recent years, pet ownership in China has increased significantly, due in no small part to the development of a large, urban, middle class. China is now said to have the world’s third largest dog population, estimated at more than 27 million animals, and a booming pet and pet-products marketplace. Many – especially younger – Chinese welcome this development. However, the legacy of the Maoist era when pet dogs were viewed as part of

a Western lifestyle that was inappropriate for socialist China is still seen in a wide range of conflicting legal and social attitudes towards pet dogs. Accordingly, alongside the increasing number of pet dogs, there are also persistent social issues with puppy mills, strays, abandoned animals, and even trafficking in stolen pets – and as a result there are a substantial number of Chinese dogs in need of new homes. Yankee Golden Retriever Rescue is one of a handful of breed-specific rescue organizations that works with its Chinese counterparts to bring some of these dogs to the United States for adoption. This talk will provide an overview of the current status of companion animals in China and how it is grappling with many of the same issues seen in this country and elsewhere, and will also describe YGRR’s

Rice Public Library Movie Night: The Bookshop Thursday, Jan 24 at 6 p.m. Freespirited widow Florence Green (Emily Mortimer) risks everything to open a bookshop in a conservative East Anglian coastal town. While bringing about a surprising cultural awakening through works by Ray Bradbury and Vladimir Nabokov, she earns the polite but ruthless opposition of a local grand dame (Patricia Clarkson) and the support and affection of a reclusive book loving widower (Bill Nighy). Based on Penelope Fitzgerald’s acclaimed novel, The Bookshop is an elegant yet incisive rendering of personal resolve, tested in the battle for the soul of a community.

Another Chance Animal Rescue NORTH BERWICK Introducing Willow! This sweet 3-4 year old female is quite the lady. Full of typical Calico character, charm and feistiness, Willow is a total people person and rescue favorite. She is not very fond of other kitties... Tolerates them mostly, and prefers to perch on one of counters where she can avoid cat traffic and have a better vantage point to greet people and show off her affectionate personality. Willow is up to date on all of her vetting and would do best in a home where she is the only pet. Willow invites you to come see her this Saturday, January 19 at our Adoption Facility, 251 Country Club Road (Route 4) in Sanford from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Appointments to meet Willow or our other available cats for adoption outside of Open Adoption hours can be arranged by contacting either Marilyn at 207-490-2855 or Amanda at 603205-3615. Come visit us at our Thrift Store located at 37 Market St, North Berwick Wednesday Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily where we have an ever changing inventory of clothing, housewares, decor, tools, gadgets, and pet items all at very low pricing! All proceeds from our volunteer run store benefit our rescue 100%! We accept donations of gently used, clean and good repair items during these

new kitty into your home. Come and spend time with our kitties in their comfy, cage-free rooms. You’ll be able to interact with them, and see their true personalities in a homelike setting. Last summer Stephanie and Maud, two Safe Haven volunteers, went on a rescue to a local farm. The property owner had a stray mother raising her kittens in a woodpile. It took two weeks of watching and waiting, but all were rescued. This family of shy kitties has received lots of love and socializing and now we want them to find the very best homes. A brother and sister, Flynn and Dora, are tightly bonded. Even though they’re still a bit shy, they’ve become trusting, sweet and loving. Now they’re ready to make the leap into someone’s arms. Maybe yours? Dora is white with tiger patches on her head. Flynn is a handsome black and white kitty. Both have little pink noses which are simply precious! For details, please call our shelter at 207-6461611.

Cold weather alert! This cold weather can be fatal to strays so please provide food, water and, if possible, shelter for any you see. Report strays to your town’s no-kill shelter or Animal Control Officer. Please do not ignore them. You could save their life! Also, if possible, take a photo because that “stray might actually be a family’s beloved pet who got out somehow. Consider it good luck to have seen it, and a chance to perform a (not so) random act of kindness. Post the photo online, on Facebook, on posters. You may be this cat’s only hope of surviving. Thanks! Our thrift shop is getting ready for the spring/summer season with some paint and new shelving. We always work hard

Jim was in the oil delivery and service business his entire life. In 1968, Jim began a 20 year career with B. F. Emery, then worked for Dresser Marsh, Union Oil, and Dead River Company. He was a hard worker who was dedicated to taking care of his family. Jim was a lifetime collector of unique items, especially coins and stamps. No yard sale or free sign went unnoticed. If it was a good deal, Jim bought it. He lugged home every tool known to mankind, sometimes in triplicate. That collection came in handy over the years in his workshop where he was jackof all trades, master of none. Jim tinkered with plumbing, electrical and mechanical, and really enjoyed woodworking. His one of a kind nature, kindness, and humor will forever be missed.

Lecture Presents Search for Early Settler of Old Berwick

SOUTH BERWICK On Thursday, January 24, John Demos, an archivist for the Counting House Museum in South Berwick, will present a talk on researching a line of the Gray family of South Berwick. Learn about the discovery of a 17th-century Scottish homestead

location and a 19th-century sawmill site. The lecture is hosted by the Old Berwick Historical Society and begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Arts Center at Berwick Academy in South Berwick. Admission is free and open to the public. Donations are gratefully accepted.

George Gray, born in Scotland, is believed to have fought the English in the battle of Dunbar in 1650. After the battle, some of the Scottish prisoners were sold into indentured servitude to English possessions, including the English Colonies. Historians believe that was how George Gray arrived in New England, and went on to settle in South Berwick. Sparked by an interest to find more information about his

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Local Photographer Shows in Biddeford BIDDEFORD / WELLS Fine art photographer Steven Wells, of Wells, will exhibit his dramatic new coastal Maine photographs at Elements: Books, Coffee, Beer, located at 265 Main St., Biddeford. His work will be on view January 21 through February 18 at the bookstore cafĂŠ, which is open Monday - Thursday, 7 a.m. - 9 p.m.; Friday - Saturday, 7 a.m.-11 p.m. and Sunday, 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. Wells specializes in creating stunning black-and-white landscape and seascape fine art images of New England. “I enjoy the ability of mixing photography and computer technology to create beautiful images to share with people,â€? said Wells, a retired computer industry executive who lives in Wells. “When I am out shooting, I am drawn to images that show depth, variations in light, texture and contrast,â€? said Wells. “I am particularly drawn to capturing images of New England coastal scenes and Maine countryside settings.â€? He has been a photographer most of his life, beginning in elementary school when he shot movies on an 8-mm camera. Later on, he created cibachrome and black-and-white prints. He also shot and developed color slides. Today, he uses Pentax digital cameras with a variety of lenses to capture his images. Wells does all of his own printing and framing. Wells loves taking photos and capturing the beauty of New England. “I want to share this beauty with everyone,â€? he said.

“To me, the framed print is the ultimate photographic statement, not images viewed on the screen from the internet. A printed image is something you can see, touch and get close to. It can be shared and appreciated by many for generations to come. For more information, visit www.stevenwells.photoshelter.com or call 530-559-6527. Wells Reserve Announces Monthly Talks WELLS A popular series of wideranging lunch-and-learn talks continues this season at the Wells Reserve at Laudholm. Salmon migration in British Columbia, bird-chasing in Zambia, hurricane recovery in Puerto Rico, and plastics in the world’s oceans will be featured in the monthly series. All are welcome to attend the talks, which start at noon in Mather Auditorium and last about an hour. A $2 donation is suggested. On Wednesday, January 23, Dr. Nathan Furey will base “Ecology of the Gauntlet on his studies of juvenile salmon migrations in British Columbia. Furey will focus on a pristine ecosystem where juvenile sockeye salmon must pass through a gauntlet of predators as they migrate downriver toward the open ocean. Now a fish ecologist at the University of New Hampshire, Furey will explain how knowledge of Pacific salmon might help scientists understand migratory fish populations in the Gulf of Maine.

longtime supporters of OMAA, with corporate sponsorships dating back to 2011. This recent support has been provided by Alfred Cavaretta, Jr, Karen and Richard Napoli, Phil and Lori Cavaretta, John Cavaretta and Randal Coulton. The museum continues to seek matching funds for the project which will cost in total $100,000 for the interior improvements. OMAA was built in 1953 by founder and artist Henry Strater in classic mid-century modern architecture. The tile and slate flooring dates back the museum’s construction and has weathered and cracked over 65 years of general use. “We are grateful for this visionary gift from The Cavaretta Family and Meadowmere Resort which is earmarked for this restoration project,” said Michael Mansfield, Executive Director / Chief Curator. “It’s an essential project this season, and their generosity is a significant step in funding the work”. Funding the flooring project is a Q1 initiative for the OMAA Development Committee, which plans to have the work completed by the end of the year. The initiative is the largest interior renovation projects in 25 years, which will transform the galleries both visually and from a structural perspective. “The museum is currently See GIFT page 14...

Over 500 Mainers Receive Health Care Coverage Under Medicaid Expansion in First Week AUGUSTA Governor Janet Mills announced that 529 Mainers have now qualified for health insurance under Medicaid expansion in the first week since she issued Executive Order One directing the Department of Health and Human Services to begin implementation. The information was made public as part of a new blog spearheaded by Acting DHHS Commissioner Jeanne Lambrew. Governor Mills issued the following statement: “One week ago, 529 people did not have the health care coverage that they have today. For many of these folks, this has the power to change their lives for the better. Now they can see a doctor, receive preventive care, afford critical prescription medications, and much more,” said Governor Mills. “I want to ensure that Maine people have

access to health care and this is a positive step forward in that effort. My Administration will continue to partner with health care providers, advocates, patients, the business community

and others to ensure that every eligible Mainer knows they can now apply to enroll in MaineCare and receive the care they need.” See COVERAGE page 15...

American Lung Association Offers Tips to Help Quit Smoking STATEWIDE For a more successful start to the new year, the American Lung Association is sharing helpful tips for people looking to made a New Year’s resolution to quit smoking. It is reported that over 37.8 million people still smoke despite the fact that every year in the U.S. more than 480,000 people die from tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke It’s never too late to quit. While it’s best to quit smoking as early as possible, quitting smoking at any age will enhance the length and quality of life.

Learn from past experiences. Most smokers have tried to quit before and sometimes get discouraged thinking about previous attempts. It’s important to think about what helped during those tries and what to do differently in the next quit attempt. You don’t have to quit alone. The first 7 to 10 days of a quit attempt are the toughest, and telling friends and family enlists their support and can help ease the process. Friends who also smoke may even join in trying to quit! Home Health VNA Receives Deficiency-Free Rating YORK COUNTY Home Health VNA recently received a deficiency-free rating in a home health care agency survey conducted by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH). DPH periodically administers unannounced surveys of home health quitting successfully. There are seven FDA-approved quit smoking medications that can help smokers quit. Just make sure to follow the directions and use them for the full duration if they are prescribed. Every smoker can quit. Find the right combination of techniques and above all, keep trying. Slip-ups – having a puff, or smoking one or two cigarettes – are common but don’t mean that a quitter has failed. The important thing is to keep trying to quit!

Explaining Dangerous Radon Exposure Radon is a colorless, odorless gas that forms naturally when radioactive elements, such as uranium, decay. These radioactive elements can be found in different amounts in soil and rock throughout the world. Though radon is present outdoors and indoors, it is often present in such small amounts that it does not pose a threat to human health. However, the American Cancer Society notes that prolonged exposure to high levels of radon can lead to lung cancer. People who work underground, such as miners, are most likely to be exposed to high levels of radon. People who work in factories where uranium is processed or those who come in contact with phosphate fertilizers are more likely to be exposed to high, and potentially dangerous, levels of radon. Building materials made from substances that contain radon also can lead to unhealthy levels of radon exposure. However, such substances, which the ACS notes include concrete and wallboard, often give off very low levels of radon.

Audubon Announces Hog Island Scholarship

KENNEBUNKPORT York County Audubon Society (YCAS) is seeking an educator or community leader to participate in a one-week program on famed Hog Island off mid-coast Maine in July 2019. YCAS will sponsor one participant who can benefit from the Hog Island experience and use it to teach others. Complete information is available at www.yorkcountyaudubon. org and applications are due March 15. The program is entitled

“Sharing Nature: An Educator’s Week” and will run from July 14 through July 19. The YCAS scholarship will pay 70% of the recipient’s cost for program tuition, room, and board. YCAS’s 2018 Hog Island scholarship winner was Leia Lowery, Director of Education for the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust. She described her program experience in an article for the Autumn 2018 issue of The Harlequin, which can be accessed through the YCAS website. And reports from prior

years’ winners can be found in previous Autumn issues of The Harlequin. Since 1936, some of the world’s most well-known and highly respected naturalists have inspired thousands to learn about and protect birds and the environment. Roger Tory Peterson was among the first teachers on the 335-acre island. Rachel Carson described her visit to Hog Island in her landmark book, Silent Spring. Kenn Kaufman, only nine years old when he read Pe-

terson’s account of Hog lsland, is now an international authority on birds and nature. York County Audubon Society fosters understanding, appreciation, and conservation of the natural world through the education of present and

future generations. This Hog Island scholarship is dedicated to June Ficker, bird bander extraordinaire, who shared her love for birds with thousands of York County residents and visitors. YCAS is a chapter of Maine Audubon.

STATEWIDE The Maine Community Foundation offers more than 600 scholarships that support students pursuing studies in music, journalism, teaching, horticulture, technology, the arts, and many other fields. The scholarships are available for students who attend secondary, post-secondary, and graduate schools, as well as non-traditional programs. A complete listing of scholarships available for the upcoming school year is now online at the Maine Community Foundation website, www. mainecf.org. In 2018, the community foundation awarded nearly $3 million in scholarships to more

than a 1,000 Maine students attending schools in the state, across the country, and around the world. Adult learners also can benefit from a number of scholarship funds that help them navigate the road back to school. About 200,000 Mainers who started college never completed their degrees. The Maine Community Foundation is focusing on this group as part of its goal to advance education in Maine. MaineCF is a supporting member of the MaineSpark coalition, a 10-year commitment by education, nonprofit, philanthropy, and business leaders to ensure Maine’s workforce is productive and competitive.

Its goal: By 2025, 60% of Mainers will hold education and workforce credentials that position Maine and its families for success. MaineCF’s scholarship funds are established for a variety of reasons, from honoring a family member to carrying on the tradition of “giving back that helped an individual through college. To establish a scholarship fund at the community foundation, call Liz Fickett, scholarship funds manager, toll-free at 877-7006800, ext. 2015. Headquartered in Ellsworth, with additional personnel in Portland, Dover-Foxcroft, and Mars Hill, the Maine Community Foundation works with donors and other partners to improve the quality of life for all Maine people. Dear Peggy, According to Gmail, they reserve the right to remove an account and all its data after 9 months of inactivity. That doesn’t mean that the account will be deleted right at the 9 months mark, but that it might be at any time after that. So, if you haven’t used your account in years, it is pretty safe to say that the account is now

Dear Computer Lady, How do I stop people from posting things on my Facebook page? Thanks, Jane

Dear Computer Lady, Please tell me how to clear my browser history in Windows 10. Thank you so much, I love your articles. Gloria

Dear Jane, You can actually change one of the Facebook settings to determine who can write on your Facebook timeline. Here is how: 1. Log into your Facebook Account. 2. Click the drop down arrow in the right side of the blue search bar, and click on “Settings in the drop down list that appears. 3. In the left hand column, click on “Timeline and Tagging. 4. In the main page, you will see a section that says, “Who can post on your timeline? Click the word, “Edit to the right of that section. 5. Click to select either “Friends or “Only Me Then click, “Close when you are finished editing the setting. Your settings will take effect as soon as you make them and click “Close to the right of your selection , and you can go back and change them at any

Dear Gloria, How you clear your browser history depends on what browser you are using. I’m guessing that you are using Edge in Windows 10: 1. Open Microsoft Edge. 2. Click on the three small dots in the upper-right corner of the window. 3. In the drop-down menu, click on “Settings. 4. In the settings menu, find the section that says, “Clear Browsing Data and click the button that says, “Choose what to clear. 5. CLick to check off what you want to clear, then click the “Clear button. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I hope you can help me. When I turn on my computer a screen appears that is locked. Normally I can open this with my mouse. Now I cannot get into it. I’ve checked my mouse and key-

board and they are OK. I would appreciate any suggestions. Control, alt, delete doesn’t unlock the screen. I love your columns. Thank you for your help, Helene

Dear Helene, While it is possible that there is a problem with your mouse, keyboard or the computer itself, it is also possible that your solution is as simple as one key on the keyboard. If you are looking at the lock screen that usually has a rainbow on it, try the “Enter key on your keyboard. That should bring you to the login screen. If that doesn’t work, you might need to bring your computer into your local repair shop and have them troubleshoot the problem. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Elizabeth has answered thousands of computer questions over the years. Come browse her articles, watch instructional videos, ask questions, and view comments at www.askthecomputerlady.com.
