YCCC’s New Building Named After Aerospace Innovator WELLS The Maine Community College System Board of Trustees has approved a request from York County Community College (YCCC) to name its new academic building in Wells for Pratt & Whitney. The naming recognizes the company’s longterm support of the college, including $700,000 in gifts to The Foundation for Maine’s Community Colleges to support construction of the new building. Pratt & Whitney has also donated more than $300,000 in equipment to YCCC’s precision machining technology program, bringing its latest con-

tributions to the college to more than $1 million, the most ever received by the college from a single donor.

In announcing the Board vote, Jean Ginn Marvin, the Board’s chair, said: “Pratt & Whitney has long recognized

the critical role that YCCC plays in ensuring a skilled workforce. The company has been a strong and generous supporter of expanded educational and economic opportunities for the citizens of York County. We are pleased to recognize its contributions to the college and the wider community. “This new building demonstrates the Maine Community College System and Pratt & Whitney’s joint commitment to inspiring the next generation, said Mike Papp, Pratt & Whitney vice president, Manufacturing & Module Center Operations. “This is a natural exten-

sion of our work with YCCC to attract and train a highly-skilled manufacturing workforce in the 21st century. When it is completed in 2017, YCCC’s new 18,000-square-foot academic building will provide muchneeded instructional space that will include eight classrooms, independent and group study areas, and a developmental mathematics and English lab. The Pratt & Whitney Building will also house a 140-seat lecture/performance hall. Pratt & Whitney, a United See YCCC page 4...

Prior to the arrival of the English and French during the Little Ice Age, Wabanaki inhabitants mastered the seasonal challenges of living in this place. YORK COUNTY The Brick Store Museum welcomed students from third, fourth and fifth grades at RSU21 in 2016 for a variety of curriculum-based field trips at the Museum. As it continues to work with local schools and teachers to expand its educational programming and outreach, the Museum’s director, Cynthia Walker, recently announced that the Museum will offer free individual memberships to every teacher in York County. “As an educational institution, the Museum respects and values teachers. Their work has lasting effects on students’ abilities to understand the world. Because of this inspirational work, the Brick Store Museum is launching a program to offer free memberships to all York County teachers, Walker said. Museum staff members and trustees believe that this small effort for teachers aligns with the Museum’s commitment to life-long learning, community engagement, and providing access to all. “The origin of the word ‘museum’ comes from Ancient Greek, in reference to a place dedicated to the Muses – inspirational goddesses of various forms of culture, arts, and sciences. Museums are places to be inspired – and teachers certainly inspire students every day in their classrooms, Walker continued. “We are celebrating the link between museums and education. The membership program is open to any current York County teacher from preschool (and family childcare) to Grade 12 in a public or private school. To take advantage of the program, teachers are asked to visit the Museum at 117 Main Street in Kennebunk, or visit www. brickstoremuseum.org to learn more about the program.

Presentation by Muralist Carlisle WELLS OGUNQUIT OUTREACH COMMITTEE:

MANY THANKS! During the 2016 Thanksgiving and Christmas season your support made these holidays much brighter for adults and children in Wells and Ogunquit. The generosity displayed by caring community groups, businesses and neighbors was especially welcomed with the continuing hard times faced by many in both our communities. We were able to offer support to not only families and children, but also to many individuals and senior citizens who are living on a very limited income. All of our partners play key roles in making this Wells Ogunquit Outreach Committee a success. With the help of many there were 90 families totaling 308 individuals who experienced a brighter Thanksgiving and Christmas. The Wells Ogunquit Outreach Committee would like to extend a very special thanks to all of you. PLEASE KNOW THAT YOU PLAYED AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN MAKING MANY WISHES AND DREAMS COME TRUE. May you all be blessed for your support and we wish you all prosperity and contentment in 2017.

Bleau Paintings on Display at Berwick Public Library BERWICK The paintings of Ruth Ann Bleau are on display on the walls of the Berwick Public Library through January. During a life when Ruth has been a Peace Corps volunteer, a waitress, Head Start aid, a US Postal Service letter carrier, and earning a BA in English from the University of Massachusetts, she has had an underlying passion for art. She has always loved to draw and has taken courses at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, Montserrat College of Art in Beverly, MA and the Peabody Essex Museum. Her large, colorful paintings are of landscapes, animals and flowers. She paints very quickly and intensely for two or three hours and then studies the painting for a few days, adjusting the color, contrast, intensities and patterns. As 2017 gets underway many sellers might decide that it is smarter to wait until the spring “buyer’s market to list their house. In the past, that might have made sense. However, this winter will not be like recent years. The recent jump in mortgage rates has forced buyers off the fence and into the market, resulting in incredibly strong demand RIGHT NOW!! At the same time, inventory levels of homes for sale have dropped dramatically as compared to this time last year. 2017 will see ready buyers and low listing competition. ~ Pets ~ Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS My, what curious eyes you have, Smudge (pictured)! Smudge, his sister and brother are looking for homes. If you think you have what it takes to spoil these young kittens as much as their foster mom has, then call her at 603-988-7517. We’re also looking for a foster home for a remarkable

kitty. OJ is the friendliest orange tiger. We rescued him last September, along with 35 other kitties, from northern Maine. We decided to bring back not the easily adoptable, but the ones who needed our help the most. OJ was in the worst shape of them all, very thin, one eye severely damaged by injury or infection, and hair was missing

around both eyes. People gasped when they saw him. We’ve taken OJ to eye specialists three times, as well as a dermatologist. The ophthalmologist determined that his eye is non-working and it will be removed if necessary, but not until the skin around his eyes heals. The dermatologist thinks it could be an allergy and recommends he begin a temporary, prescription-only hypoallergenic diet, to determine if food aller-

gies are the problem. His diet is a problem, because OJ lives at our adoption center in a freeroaming room. He plays and eats alongside his kitty buddies, but he must eat only his own food for two months. The only way we could do it here is by putting him in a separate cage – and Safe Haven doesn’t cage their kitties!

So this incredibly friendly kitty needs a foster home for two months. We’ll supply his medication and food, of course, and pay all his vet bills. He’ll need to be the only kitty, so he doesn’t get into any other cat’s food. The foster mom/dad should be accustomed to giving medication, as OJ needs both eye meds and a pill. If you can’t do it, tell friends and family about OJ. Then call us at 207-646-1611!

These daily leash walks must be long enough to fulfill Banner’s needs and are a must for him. So if you also have a gypsy soul that needs a 4-legged sidekick, then Banner will be your man. Health & Fitness HUD Finalizes Rule to Help Protect Children from Lead Paint Exposure WASHINGTON D.C. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) finalized a longawaited rule to protect children living in subsidized housing from harmful lead paint exposure. The new rule, which went into effect right away, will lower HUD’s acceptable blood lead level to match the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) recommended threshold. This will allow for an earlier lead abatement response when children living in subsidized housing are exposed to lead-based paint hazards. U.S. Senator Susan Collins, the Chairman of the Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development Appropriations Subcommittee, has strongly pushed for this change. “I am pleased that the Department of Housing and Urban Development has updated its blood lead threshold, a change I have long advocated for, which will help protect countless children from the harmful, often permanent

effects of lead poisoning, said Senator Susan Collins. “Since the beginning of my Senate service, I have worked to raise awareness and secure funding to address this largely preventable health problem, which remains one of the most prevalent environmental issues facing children today. We must continue our efforts to eradicate this health threat. HUD regulations have not been updated since 1999, and had allowed for the lead in children’s blood to be up to four times higher than the CDC-recommended level before requiring action to address lead hazards in public and assisted housing. The new standard would lower

HUD’s threshold of lead in children’s blood from 20 micrograms of lead per deciliter of blood (¾g/ dL) to five. The proposed rule will potentially cover 2.9 million HUD-assisted housing units, of which 128,000 are estimated to contain lead-based paint and have children under age six residing in them. In 2016, Senator Collins and Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) wrote to HUD Secretary Juliån Castro, urging him to expedite HUD’s regulatory action to adopt the blood lead levels currently advised by the CDC. In addition, Senator Collins secured language in the fiscal year 2017 THUD Appropriations bill, which was

approved by the full Senate by a vote of 89-8, that would have required HUD to lower its threshold to match the CDC’s. Even relatively low levels of lead exposure can cause reading and learning disabilities, hyperactivity, behavioral problems, and reductions in IQ and attention span, all of which can

threaten a child’s ability to achieve his or her full potential. In 1999, during Senator Collins first term in office, she held a field hearing on lead poisoning in Lewiston. Since that time, she has championed increased funding for programs to address lead abatement. Submitted by the office of Senator Susan Collins, 413 Dirksen Building, Washington, DC, 20510, United States.

Too much holiday cheer? Fatty foods, sweet treats, alcoholic drinks? Fear not! The New Year is your chance to hit the reset button and go healthy. One way to do that is to try a fast. “You can lose at least a pound a day, get rid of foggy brain, and recharge your energy, says best-selling author and nutritionist Cherie Calbom, known as “The Juice Lady for her expertise in juicing for health and detoxification. “Fasting is a great way to restart your metabolism, purify your lymphatic system, and revive your soul says Calbom, author of the new book “The Juice Lady’s Guide to Fasting. “It’s also a way to look younger, clear out the toxins, and restart the systems in your body for optimal health and physical wellbeing, and to bring restoration to your mind, body and spirit. People often think of fasting as a fad, she says, but it’s been touted throughout history – by the healer Hippocrates, the philosopher Plato, and scientist and statesman Benjamin Franklin,

just to name a few. Germany’s famous “fasting therapist, Otto Buchinger Sr., M.D., called it an “operation without surgery. Even those who don’t believe in fasting’s curative powers agree it can help prevent illness. Want to fend off the flu, a cold or bronchitis? Fasting gives your immune system a boost. “It’s a lot like a threefold spring cleaning, as you dive deep into the areas in your life that don’t always get the attention they need – mentally, physically and spiritually – and you clean them up, Calbom says. “You rid yourself of toxic influences that hinder growth, clarity and well-being, and refocus on the future. With a liquid fast, you give up solid foods, and enjoy delicious, nutrient-rich beverages.

In her book, Calbom provides a variety of fasts to choose from including the smoothie fast, bone-broth fast, 3-day detox fast, and what she says is the most popular of all — the juice fast. If you crave crunch, she offers the Garden of Eden Fast and the Daniel Fast. “There’s something for everyone — from a short weekend weight loss fast to a 21-day rejuvenation fast, she says. If you’re a list maker (and who isn’t this time of year?), Calbom recommends writing down what you hope to achieve with your fast – losing belly fat, cleansing your liver or boosting your brain power, with brains detox juices for example – in order to find a fast that’s a good fit. Health & Fitness Medicare Will Now Provide Coverage for Certain Continuous Glucose Monitors WASHINGTON D.C. U.S. Senator Susan Collins, the Chairman of the Senate Aging Committee and founder of the Senate Diabetes Caucus, released the following statement after the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that Medicare will now provide coverage for certain continuous glucose monitors (CGMs). CGMs are devices used by individuals with Type 1 diabetes to control their blood glucose levels, which is key to preventing costly and sometimes deadly diabetes complications. “Today’s announcement will help transform the lives of the millions of Americans who are living with Type 1 diabetes, and who rely on a continuous glucose monitor to successfully manage the disease, said Senator Col-

lins. Prior to this much-needed rule change, thousands of insulin-dependent Medicare beneficiaries were denied coverage for this potentially lifesaving device based on an improper and outdated policy. Although numerous private insurance plans already provide this coverage, many older Americans did not have access to CGMs when they aged into Medicare because they couldn’t afford to pay for them out-of-pocket. I am so pleased that our advocacy has spurred this change in policy that will help change our country’s future with regard to

in your life, Joyce suggests a few places too look: ¥ Checking and savings accounts. When youÕre in retirement, you want to be conservative with your investments Ð to a degree. But you can go overboard, Joyce says. Sometimes people keep higher than necessary balances in their checking accounts and savings accounts. They have quick access to that cash, which is great, but the money isnÕt growing the way it could. ¥ Old 401(k) plans. People often change jobs, but are uncertain what to do with their 401(k). So they just leave it with their previous employer and Òit sits there and does nothing,Ó Joyce says. ÒYou could roll it into a traditional IRA and structure it in a different way to be either conservative or more aggressive, your call.Ó Another option is to consolidate it into a 401(k) with your new employer. ¥ Little-used options with current employer benefit plans. Sometimes itÕs worth having a financial professional review how youÕre investing in retirement plans offered by your current employer, Joyce says. Many employees assume they donÕt have access to that money until they are 59½, other than possibly to borrow from it, but sometimes they might. He reviewed the plan for one client Ð a woman in her 40s Ð and discovered she was allowed to take the company match portion of her 401(k) and contribute it to a separate IRA. ÒSo many people donÕt realize they even have Ôlazy moneyÕ and that there are opportunities to put that money to work,Ó Joyce says. ÒA good financial professional can help them determine whether their money is doing everything that it can.Ó Alexander Joyce is president and CEO of ReJoyce Financial LLC (www.ReJoyceFinancial.com). BUSINESS & FINANCE Benefits of Umbrella Insurance Insurance policies come in various forms. There is a type of insurance to cover everything from motor vehicles to personal health to apartment dwellings. While the majority of people understand the importance of insuring their homes and cars, many may not explore the benefits of a different type of insurance: umbrella coverage. Unlike other types of insurance that only offer one specific coverage, umbrella insurance is a single policy that covers various aspects of a person’s life. An umbrella policy can fill in the gaps where liability limits come into play with other insurance policies, keeping a person protected regardless of deductibles and other assets. According to the financial resource Money Crashers, umbrella insurance is a type of liability insurance. Its main purpose is to protect policy holders in the event of lawsuits. The

umbrella policy will provide additional coverage against bodily injury liability claims and property damage liability claims. These policies also provide broader forms of coverage and can help cover some legal fees, if necessary. Trusted Choice Independent Insurance Agents says umbrella insurance is important because it can prevent financial ruin in the case of an accident. The amount of umbrella coverage a person may need depends on how much that person is worth. Prospective policy holders can calculate their total assets and then take out policies in that amount or more to protect their net worth. Depending on the insurance company, umbrella policies range anywhere from $1 to $10 million. Coverage typically starts in the range of $150 to $200 for a $1 million policy. What’s more, some insurance companies will not issue an umbrella policy unless the insured already has an

automotive or home policy with them — and one that maintains the standard amount of liability in those other policies. When reviewing umbrella policies, it’s also wise to think ahead to future income and how one’s assets may grow. Adjust policies to account for inferred earnings or other expected assets. Learn more about umbrella policies that can offer above-andbeyond protection by speaking with a trusted insurance agent. Mary-Leigh Call Smart, 99 YORK – Mary-Leigh Call Smart of 32 Surf Point Road, York, died on January 11, 2017. She was born in Springfield, IL, on February 27, 1917, the daughter of S. Leigh and Mary Bradish Call. She graduated from Monticello Seminary and Junior College, Godfrey, Illinois, now Lewis and Clark Community College. She attended Oxford University in England the spring term in 1935 and received an Extra Mural Delegacy Certificate. In 1937 Mrs. Smart graduated from Wellesley College with a B.A. degree. In 1939 she received an M.A. from Columbia University, writing her thesis under Justin O’Brien on Andre Gide. The same year she was Queen of the Springfield Art Association’s annual Beaux Arts Ball. In 1940-41 Mary-Leigh did Public Relations for the In-

She returned to Columbia University and also attended New York University to study Agriculture and Business and Finance. When the United States entered World War II, Mary-Leigh enlisted in the W.A.V.E.S. as an Apprentice Seaman in the first class of officers’ training. In 1945 she left the Navy as a Lieutenant (j.g.) and took up the management of Illinois grain farms, which she owned. Scott Smart, star of radio, film and early T.V., and painter and sculptor. They built a house in Ogunquit, and were active in the art community, being founders of Barn Gallery Associates, of which Mary-Leigh was later president for six years in the ‘70s and ‘80s and vice president from 1994 until the organization’s dissolution in 2003. The Smarts established Lowtrek Kennel and bred Basset Hounds. Jack Smart died in 1960. Like her parents Mary-Leigh was an art collector, acquiring a large number of paintings, works on paper and sculpture many of which she gave to museums. In 1970 Mary-Leigh bought property in York, and with artist Beverly Hallam built a duplex house. They are leaving it with the balance of the property to Surf Point Foundation, a non-profit foundation, which she established in 1988, patterned on the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, NH. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, My comcast emails keep disappearing. Every day when I log into my email program (Thunderbird) the messages in my inbox only go back a month or so. I know I saved messages older than that, but they are gone. Every day, a few more disappear. How do I stop this from happening? Thanks, Marilyn Dear Marilyn, After a little bit of research, I found that this is actually a setting on the comcast server, not in Thunderbird. To change this setting, you need to log into your comcast account at: https://login.comcast.net. Once you have logged in with your email address and password, click on the, "Email" icon in the upper-right corner. When your email page loads, click on, "Preferences" in the top row. On the preferences page, click on, "Email". About halfway down the list of email preferences you will see "Email Deletion Schedule" Click "Edit" to the right. A new dialog box will open with a list of folders and number of days to keep messages for each folder. Just click the drop-down list for each folder and set the number of days desired (or select "Never"). Each setting is saved automatically as soon as you change it, so when you are

finished, all you need to do is close the window and go back to your email program. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I want to save some pics on Granddaughter's Facebook page to my iPad. Can it be done? I only see references to " like, comment, messenger". Sam Dear Sam, Yes, there are a couple of ways you can save pictures from a Facebook page on your iPad. The simplest thing to do is tap on the photo until it is full size, then take a screenshot. It will automatically be saved in your photos. You take a screenshot by holding in the power button while you press the home button. The next thing you can do is save the photo. When you view the photo and can see the options for "Like" and "Comment" look in the upper- right corner of your screen for the button with three dots. If you don't see that icon, tap on the photo one more time so that it fills your entire screen. Tap on the three dots icon, and "Save Photo" will be one of the options you can tap on. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Thanks for all your good education work. It is a great help for seniors like me. Which

is the best driver update to use? Chet Dear Chet, Unless you are having a problem with your computer, the best driver update to use is Windows Updates. If there are updated drivers available in Windows Update, you can be sure they are safe to use, and install them. You can access Windows update by clicking on the "Start" button and typing, "Windows Update" in the search box. If you are having problems with a specific hardware device (like a printer or video card) you should go directly the manufacturer's website and check for updated drivers there. If I am not having any problems with hardware, I like to follow the old rule of, "If it's not broken, don't fix it" *smile*. Elizabeth

Is it possible for me to save this to my remote hard drive, just so I don't lose it all...just in case. If so, how computer savvy must one be? Thank you! Betsy Dear Betsy, Actually, your Outlook (Not Outlook Express or Outlook.com, but Microsoft Office Outlook) mail and everything in it is in one file that is easy to backup. All you have to do is find it. Outlook stores all your messages, contacts and calendar entries in one file called a post office file. It ends with .pst. Here is how to find your .pst file: Start Outlook. On the Tools menu, click Options. On the Mail Setup tab, click the Data Files button. Note the path and file name of your .pst file. For example, C: \Exchange\Mailbox.pst indicates a

Dear Computer Lady, My Dell Inspiron desktop computer is 6 years old and came with Vista. Now Vista is on the way out. I have saved a lot of family pictures, genealogy and other 'important stuff' on Outlook Mail. I was assured by a friend that a technician can transfer everything to a new computer. I would like to save ALL the things on Outlook 2007 to my WD 1.5T remote hard drive. I wonder if

Browse through the files to the location of your .pst file. Drag to copy your .pst file to the location that you want. Elizabeth Interested in learning more?
