“Good To-Go - Easy Meals for Outdoor Enthusiasts

Professional chef Jennifer Scism and business partner/husband David Koorits are founders of Good To-Go in York, a fast-growing business that makes dehydrated food for outdoor enthusiasts.

By Staff Writer Joyce Amend YORK Want to know a good recipe for success? Take one experienced chef, a bevy of healthful, cholesterol-free foods, a business partner/husband and a strong desire to make trail food taste delicious – and you have ingredients that yield healthy dehydrated meals for all whose adventures take them outdoors. These meals have been branded “Good To-Go. Good To-Go had its beginning with Jennifer Scism, accomplished chef and long-

time co-owner of a nationally recognized restaurant in New York’s Greenwich Village. It’s safe to say Jen knows good food, having traveled to over 20 countries studying regional foods, and having beaten Iron Chef, Mario Batali on the TV Food Network’s Iron Chef Program. Jen also loves adventure and with her husband and Good ToGo’s co-founder, David Koorits, the two enjoy exploring the outdoors. Good To-Go had it’s beginning as the couple’s outdoor day trips turned to overnights

and extended backcountry adventures. Jen struggled with the limited opportunity for fresh and delicious foods to take with them. Being a professional chef, she began preparing her favorite meals and dehydrating them at home in her countertop dehydrator. Through trial and error, the two were able to take in their outdoor surroundings and complete their adventures with amazing meals. Jen’s creations were so delicious that they wanted everyone to be able to enjoy them. See To-GO page 8...

~ News ~ African Burying Ground Talk at South Berwick Library

The capstone is placed over the grave, the last major act of the construction team at the African Burying Ground Memorial in Portsmouth.

VEGAS FURNITURE SHOW! JANUARY 22 - 26 ND

SOUTH BERWICK Being engineer for the African Burying Ground Memorial Park was not your everyday nuts and bolts job. To begin with, engineer Jack Kareckas of South Berwick was told the project construction team should not dig more than six inches below the ground. The dead were not to be disturbed. Furthermore, Kareckas knew that every step of the way he wanted to honor the memory of the 13 Africans found buried under Chestnut Street in Portsmouth just as he wanted to respect the design priorities of a group of African American citizens, historians, archaeologists

and community leaders on the African Burying Ground Committee who had taken on the job of memorializing the dead. “A group of people were doing their best to speak on behalf of the 17th and 18th century men, women and children whose voices had been forgotten for more than 200 years, said Kareckas, a construction inspector with CMA Engineers. “And I knew my job was to listen, learn and do my best to put into concrete and stone the wishes of these people. Kareckas will speak at 7 p.m. Wednesday, February 3 at the South Berwick Public Library about his experience as the City

The African Burying Ground in Portsmouth is one of the earliest documented African burying grounds in New England. This burying ground probably was active as early as the 1600s but as Portsmouth expanded during the late 18th century, the area was built over and many forgot of its existence The Portsmouth mayor appointed the African Burying Ground Committee and asked the group to advise the City Council on how best to proceed with at the Chestnut Street part of the Burying Ground, where it was now confirmed that other burials exist, and to determine how the exhumed human remains should be reinterred. The Committee was comprised of representatives from the Seacoast African American Cultural Center, Portsmouth Black Heritage Trail, Inc. and the Seacoast community. The Committee, through community forums and consultation with appropriate State and City authorities, archaeologists and a professional design team, a memorial park was created. “We Stand in Honor of Those Forgotten, the title of a poem written by the project artist, Jerome Meadows, is used at the site to See BURY page 9...

...INDUSTRY from page 1 vironment," said Paolo Dal Cin, vice president of Manufacturing and Module Center Operations. "Pratt & Whitney continues to

demonstrate its leadership in 21st century manufacturing." IndustryWeek will include a profile of the North Berwick facility in its April/May issue and will feature the operations at its 2016 Manufacturing & Technol-

ogy Conference and Expo being held May 3-5 in Chicago. Established in 1990, the IndustryWeek Best Plants awards program annually recognizes plants, located in North America,

that are on the leading edge of efforts to increase competitiveness, enhance customer satisfaction and create stimulating and rewarding work environments. Its further goal is to encourage

other manufacturing managers and work teams to emulate the honorees by adopting world-class practices, technologies and improvement strategies. For details, visit www.industryweek.com.

Jay Audet, Pierce Cole, Kevin Fox, John Kreie, Judy Moody, Darcy Ramsdell, Cheryl Turner and Marty Webb. This year, the Wells girls had the greatest number of ‘high-scoring’ fundraisers with a total of 5 girls, who raised $1,000 each! The 2016 top overall fundraiser was Karissa Kenyon, who raised over $2,052, and received an iPad for her efforts. The Junior Varsity team also scored big—winning the Team Challenge—raising over $5,000! Those girls who raised at least $250, (and there were 31 of them!) were recognized as members of the Pink Ribbon Club; with the 39 girls who raised at least $100 being entered into the Grand Prize drawing for a $500 shopping spree. A bake sale and raffle highlighting all things pink, and delicious, donated by the community and other local businesses were also held, adding to the festivities and causes’ bottom lines. The money they raised will help support both the Hospital’s Breast Cancer and Living Well With Cancer programs that help improve the quality of life of those who have been diagnosed with and are undergoing treatment for cancer at York Hospital. These funds support services

including emergency funds for gas and food, nutritional and exercise programs, wigs, head covers and prosthetics, integrative therapies like massage, Reiki and Acupuncture and others that center on the mind, body and wellbeing. “Don Abbott and the Lady Warriors are as passionate about raising funds for these programs as our staff is about providing the services,â€? noted Jud Knox as he thanked the Wells Lady Warriors, Coaches, and Planning Committee. “As we witness all the effort and amazing work the girls have put into Shootin’ for a Cure‌now in its seventh year, we are amazed, once again, at the energy they and the entire Wells community generate to accomplish this! We know that the way Shootin’ For A Cure has changed lives—of our patients and their families—is what is truly amazing. And knowing that this incredible donation will stay local and help those in our community going through their own cancer journey is so very special.â€? A highlight of this year’s event was the Survivor Challenge, where Varsity team members teamed up with cancer survivors—women who are currently undergoing or have successfully undergone treatment for breast and other cancers— together taking foul shots to celebrate the journey each survivor has made. While two winners of the Survivor Challenge Ally O'Brien and Pat Endsley were set to receive gift certificates, at the conclusion of the competition, it was announced that every survivor—each a winner—would receive a gift donated by local businesses. “The generosity of our community continues to astound us each year and we are overwhelmed with gratitude, exclaimed Karen Tufts, Planning Committee member, “The support of friends, neighbors, families, and businesses all help to make Shootin’ For A Cure the success that it is. We are so proud of our girls' basketball program and the community that supports them. Other committee members include: Don Abbott,

OGUNQUIT Construction is weather dependent and may change. Below is a schedule through Friday, January 22: Utility installation and transfers on Route 1 Bourne Lane to Shore Road. Drainage installation from Cumberland Farms to just before the Post Office on the right side of Route 1. Drainage installation from the Village Inn to Flip's on the right side of Route 1.

Road repair and patching behind the two drainage crews as they proceed down Route 1 in the same locations as above. A majority of the bricks in the sidewalk will be removed in front of the shops as the drainage is run up thru. The sidewalk will be graded gravel thru most of the winter and at the transition from the remaining brick to the gravel a cold patch pavement mix will be used as a ramp. The parking spaces along

Route 1 will not be available during installation of drainage. The ornamental lights will be removed. The main streetlights on the power poles will remain, for now, to light to road and downtown. The construction company will be providing daily updates for the work being performed downtown. Originally, they expected to focus on marketing throughout New England where their hearts were and their brand was based. But the show produced overwhelming interest in their products. Later, Backpacker Magazine awarded them The Editor’s choice Award – a title that further captured the interest of retailers, including REI and EMS, prominent sports suppliers. Soon they were swamped with orders. The Good To-Go lightweight dehydrated gourmet

February’s panel is the third in a series on race at South Berwick Library called “Why Race Matters in South Berwick.” The first session in February addressed the general question asked in the series name. The second session last spring, called “How do we respond in South Berwick?” looked at recent racerelated incidents in Maine. Safe Haven Humane Society

WELLS – They were a feral litter, like so many living in rural Maine and definitely not wanted by the property owner. One kitty had already been attacked and killed by a predator. Remember last winter’s record-breaking snows? It was only a matter of time before more would perish, victims of predators or harsh weather. But no rescue group or shelter would take them in. Safe Haven was their last chance. With all our existing financial responsibilities, shortage of space, and brutally long work hours, we knew adding these five would make us burst at the seams, challenge our team, and be a huge commitment of training time. So if not there... where? At school, of course! A place where “scared cats learn to be brave.” That’s how Safe Haven’s Scaredy Cat School was born. On a thin budget, with lots of creativity, a schoolroom was created at our thrift shop where feral kitties would have safe, comfortable housing, where a teacher could give daily lessons in social skills. The school had to be visible to lots of people and activity so the fearful would break out of their comfort zone and develop the courage to interact with humans.

You can’t train a kitty to be brave unless it’s challenged. A comfortable routine, positive reinforcement and lots and lots of treats were needed. That’s what tames a feral kitty. This doesn’t happen overnight. It takes months, even a year or so. But the results are nothing short of a miracle. The creation of Scaredy Cat School gave Sweet Caroline, Charlie, Itty Bitty Boo Boo, Chilly Willy, and Hootie the chance of a lifetime. They were among our first Scardey Cat School students. Sweet Caroline and Charlie were adopted together last fall. Itty Bitty, Chilly and Hootie have now graduated and roam our thrift store, interacting with busy shoppers. Our visitors cannot believe the kitties they’re petting were once so feral they hid and hissed. Now they purr while shoppers stroke their backs, and race up and down the aisles chasing the laser mouse. Chilly Willie (photo) was perhaps the most feral of all,

much focus on work and not nearly enough time for life,” says Aaron Zwas, an independent consultant and author of “Transition to Independence. That’s all the more reason to take the reigns of your career, becoming your own boss and adding flexibility to your work-life balance, he says. It all adds up to a new level of freedom to pursue the things that matter to you most. Zwas knows from experience. He once worked as a technical writer for a computer-software company, but a series of events led him to make the break from his corporate job and venture out as an independent consultant. ...CAREER from page 10 home, all the while increasing his income by an average of 25 percent a year. Plenty of people can benefit from working independently, though for reasons as varied as their circumstances, he says. They include the 20-something college graduate; the mother or father with young children who wants more flexibility; a stay-athome mom returning to the workforce; or a middle manager recently laid off in the company’s latest down-sizing move, just to name a few. Zwas offers three reasons why going independent could be a good career move in 2016: • Career stability isn’t what it once was. Macroeconomic trends are changing how we work and those changes are coming quickly, Zwas says. Those trends include both blue-collar and white-collar jobs moving overseas; higher value being placed on ideas, giving those who can articulate their expertise in a consulting capacity an advantage; and employers trying to minimize their costs by shifting from fulltime employees to a mix of independents. “They want to hire you only when they need you, just like you are a utility like water or electricity,â€? Zwas says. • Commuting can become a thing of the past. The average American spends about 50 minutes a day commuting to and from work, ac-

cording to the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey. Beyond the usual stress of being in traffic, that’s time lost from the day that could be devoted to family, leisure activities or whatever you choose, Zwas says. “That’s nearly an hour a day spent commuting,â€? he says. “What could you do with that extra hour if you had it back? Over the course of a year, that commute time becomes significant.â€? • The timing has never been better. At no time in history has the barrier to entry for a new business been lower, Zwas says. For example, he doesn’t need a physical store, inventory or employees. He says his annual costs of running a consultancy from his home range from $2,000 to $5,000 annually, and the only time it reaches the high end of that range is when he buys a new laptop every three years or creates a new website every five. Technology also makes it easier for an individual to accomplish what once required a small team, he says. And if there’s something you can’t do, there are plenty of specialists – such as web designers, social-media experts, researchers and others – available at reasonable per-hour rates. There’s money to be made by going the independent route – sometimes very good money in the six-figure range – but that’s not the primary reason to make the transition, he says. “This is not about making $1 million,â€? Zwas says. “This is about improving your quality of life. It’s

Zwas has grown his salary by an average of 25 percent per year since founding Zwas Group in 2003 and is still able to spend significant time with his young family.

Health & Fitness What Women Should Know About Cervical Cancer Screening

Cervical cancer screenings are an important component of preventative healthcare for women. Such screenings are often conducted at the same time as other routine checks performed by a woman’s primary care physician or gynecologist. Cervical cancer screenings are two-fold. A doctor or nurse will examine the cervix to visually look for any indications of change, and he or she also will take a sampling of cervical cells to conduct a Pap test. These screenings are some of the most effective cancer screening tests available. Some women also get tested for the

human papillomavirus, or HPV, a common sexually transmitted disease, during the same visit. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state cervical cancer is the easiest gynecologic cancer to prevent, noting that screening is highly effective at detecting the presence of cervical cancer, even if it is in its early stages. While cervical examinations are recommended every year, in 2012 the American Cancer Society changed the rate of frequency for Pap tests. That’s because cervical cancer is a slowdeveloping cancer (sometimes taking 10 to 20 years to appear), and frequent testing is not always

Patients who have never had a positive cervical cancer result and are between ages 21 and 29 should get a Pap test every three years. An HPV test is not necessary unless there is an abnormal Pap test result. Women between the ages of 30 and 65 should receive both a Pap and HPV test every five years. Women also can re-

ceive a Pap test every three years. According to The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, women who have had their uteruses and cervixes removed in hysterectomy procedures who have no history of cervical cancer do not require screening. Also, after a woman reaches age 65 and has had no abnormal results, she no longer needs to be screened for cervical cancer.

Women who are at a high risk for cervical cancer may need to be screened more often. Such women include individuals who have HIV, have undergone organ transplants or have had abnormal results from past screenings. This article was provided by MetroCreative. Certified Nursing Assistants Have Job Security in Maine STATEWIDE Is this a time of contemplation of a career change for you? Personal fulfillment is an important factor to consider when thinking about a new career, but there are other things to bear in mind. Where do you start? Have you thought about the healthcare field? There is a growing need to fill job vacancies in the healthcare field here in Maine and one of those roles includes the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA.) With a projected need for 393,000 CNAs needed in the United States by 2016, Maine ranks third in the country for job security with an average of 230 annual job vacancies to fill.

For care you can always count on Winter snow or freezing rain is no match for our determination and spirit of service to patients in our care. When you need comfort care and supportive services for an advanced illness, you can be confident that we will brave any weather to be at your door ready to meet your needs. We never waver in our commitment to bring care home. Experience. Reliability. To learn more call 207-337-7333, or visit YorkHospitalHospice.org

The CNA or certified nursing assistant helps healthcare practitioners deal with the needs of a patient under the supervision of a registered nurse or a licensed practical nurse. They work in a variety of healthcare settings including hospitals, private clinics, nursing homes, and in home care. There are Alzheimer units, rehabilitation, brain injury and long-term care facilities and each requires a unique set of skills and passion for the work. Your consideration in a new career should also be the salary range. In Maine, the median annual salary for a CNA is 30K. As a rung on the ladder, many people who train as CNAs enroll in nursing school to ad-

vance their careers. Do you have what it takes to be a CNA? Compassion, the desire to help people and a good work ethic, those are some of the qualities needed to work in this fastpaced environment. This is not a career that just pays the bills, it is one that requires patience and a team-player attitude. CNAs work with patients, their families and the nursing staff, making them a critical part of a patient’s wellbeing. CNAs are on the front lines, in the trenches of a patient’s care. One of the many roles of Adult Education is to help people train into new careers or transition up a career ladder. It is important to work with people in the field to help with new opportunities for college or career. Adult Education of the Kennebunks and Arundel is proud to collaborate with Genesis Healthcare and River Ridge Center in Kennebunk to offer a State Approved Certified Nursing Assistant Course beginning Tuesday January 19. Applications are online at www. rsu21.net/adulteducation or contact the Adult Education office of The Kennebunks and Arundel at 207-985-1116.

Health & Fitness 29 Days of Heart Healthy Ways February is American Heart Month, a great time to begin a heart-healthy lifestyle. It’s a leap year, so the American Heart Association has put together 29 Days of Heart Healthy Ways to get you started. • There’s a two-for-one bargain you can’t live without exercise! You’ll gain about two hours of life expectancy for each hour of regular exercise you do. • There are 1,440 minutes in every day. Why not schedule 30 of them for exercise? Take time at lunch or right before or after dinner to walk. Adding physical activity every day can be as easy as playing with your children or pets after work. • Did you know that when you quit smoking, your risk of heart disease and stroke drops, your senses of smell and taste come back, and you have more energy? • Sitting for long periods is bad for your heart. Park the car farther away, take the stairs, and get up and move every hour. • Before or after work or meals is often an available time to be active. Look at your weekly or daily schedule and plan out your daily activity. • Labor-saving devices at home save time, but cost us in physical activity. Turn off the self-propel option on the vacuum cleaner and use your legs. • Americans watch an average of four hours of TV/day. Do sit-ups, push-ups, leg lifts, weights, or use a stationary bike, treadmill, or stair climber while you watch. • Smoking raises blood pressure, lowers good cholesterol, decreases exercise tolerance and causes fatty buildup in arteries. Get support and quit today. • Some risk factors for heart disease are not in your control, like family history. Telling your doctor about them will help you find ways to lower your risk. • Ever wonder why kids are so energetic? Recess! Adults need recess too, so take time to move every day. • Fill up on the good stuff. Fruits and veggies give you vitamins, minerals and fiber with fewer calories, less fat and sodium than other snacks. • Fish provides lean protein and those high in omega-3 fatty acids, like mackerel, lake trout, tuna and salmon are all

great for your heart. • Get your friends together for a Saturday morning walk and make your “group habit” a healthy one. • Making healthy choices on the road is easy with a few simple guidelines: try broiled, baked or steamed foods – not fried; add a salad, not fries as your side order; and drink skim milk, not soda. • When eating out, ask your server to wrap half of your order to go before it’s even served. It’s economical and healthy! • To lose a pound of fat, you have to burn 3,500 calories or eat 3,500 fewer calories. Boxing, bicycling, and running burn the most calories. • Drop that mocha latte! Hidden calories and fat are likely lurking in your beverage. Opt for small-sized, “skinny” versions and hold the whipped cream. • Are you ready for fitness

at a moment’s notice? Keep a pair of walking shoes in your car and office. • When dining out, order a low-fat appetizer as your meal, split an entrée with a friend, or order half-orders of pasta or “petite” cuts of meat. • Slow down! It takes 20 minutes for your stomach to tell your brain you’ve been fed. By eating slowly, you eat less. • Ever wonder why dancers’ bodies are so strong and healthy? Dancing burns an average of 350 calories per hour! • Exercising just 3-5 x/

week can enhance a child’s academic performance and classroom behavior. Exercising with your kids is a smart choice. • Winter is a great time to get your kids moving. Try taking them to an ice-skating rink, bowling alley, or museum

to keep them active when the weather is harsh. • Children spend an average of 25 hours per week watching TV - more than any activity besides sleeping. A 15-minute family walk after dinner is a See HEALTHY page 16...

Health & Fitness King, Shaheen Call on Congress to Immediately Pass Emergency Funding Bill to Fight Opioid Epidemic

Senators Angus King and Jeanne Shaheen and local leaders met in York to push for federal legislation that would provide emergency funding to combat the opioid and heroin epidemic. (facebook.com/SenatorAngusSKingJr photo)

YORK – During a recent press conference at York Hospital, U.S. Senators Angus King (I-Maine) and Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) called on Congress to immediately pass an emergency funding bill that would help combat the opioid and heroin epidemic that is plaguing communities across Maine and New Hampshire. The legislation, introduced by Senator Shaheen and cospon-

sored by Senator King, would provide a total of $600 million in supplemental appropriations to programs at the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for prevention, intervention, treatment, and recovery. “The opioid and heroin epidemic is a crisis that demands our immediate attention, Senator King said. “People in Maine and around the country are losing their lives, communities are being torn apart, and first responders and healthcare providers are being pushed to the brink. Congress must act quickly and in a comprehensive way to provide those on the frontline with the additional tools and resources critical to curbing this deadly problem. I commend Senator Shaheen for spearheading this effort and look forward to working with her, our colleagues in Congress, and the President to advance this critical legislation. “Congress needs to treat the heroin epidemic like the national public health emergency that it is, said Senator Shaheen. “There are far too many families in New Hampshire, Maine and across the country that have lost a loved one to heroin and opioids. I’m very grateful to have Senator King as a partner in this effort to get urgently needed resources to the frontlines. Our first responders and treatment providers are often overwhelmed and need much more support from

the federal government to help them stem the tide of this crisis. Senator King is a respected independent voice in the Senate who will help build momentum for this legislation. The Senators were joined at the press conference by York Chief of Police and Hospital Member of the Board, Doug Bracy; York Hospital President and CEO, Jud Knox; Principal of York High School, Meghan Ward; as well as treatment practitioners and a patient currently in recovery. York Hospital operates an intensive outpatient treatment program, known as the Cottage Program, for adults and adolescents with drug addictions. From 2002 to 2013, opioid-related deaths have quadrupled nationally according to data from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. In Maine, the overall number of drug overdose deaths last year was projected to exceed the previous year, when 208 people died of overdoses – the worst year on record, according to the Maine Attorney General’s Office. Meanwhile in New Hampshire, there was a 74 percent increase in opioid deaths from 2013 to 2014. In most states, more people are now dying of fatal overdoses than vehicle-related deaths.

Winter Weather Prompt Heating and Carbon Monoxide Safety Warnings With the winter months upon us, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is reminding homeowners about the fire dangers associated with heating equipment. Improper use of such equipment like portable or stationary space heaters, wood burning stoves and fireplaces can be incredibly dangerous, and their misuse is a leading cause of U.S. home fire deaths. According to NFPA, half of home heating equipment fires are reported during the months of December, January, and February. More than half of the home heating fire deaths resulted from fires that started when something that could burn, like upholstered furniture, clothing, See SAFETY page 15...

...SAFETY from page 14 blankets and bedding, was too close to heating equipment. During the colder months there is also an increased risk of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Fuel-burning equipment, including vehicles and generators running in an attached garage, can produce dangerous levels of CO and should be vented to the outside to avoid it from building up in your home. In a 2012 NFPA report, U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated 80,100 non-fire CO incidents in which carbon monoxide was found, or an average of nine such calls per hour in 2010. The number of incidents jumped 96 percent from 40,900 incidents reported in 2003. This surge, according to NFPA, is most likely due to the increased use of CO detectors, which alert people to the presence of CO. Some heating equipment requires proper installation to reduce the risk of fire injuries. When installing wood burning stoves or gas heaters, NFPA recommends following the manufacturer’s instructions or having a professional perform the installation. Installing and maintaining CO alarms can also help reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. If you smell gas in your gas heater or other appliance, do not light it. Leave the home immediately and call your local fire department or gas company. To ensure a safe and cozy winter this year, NFPA offers some easy tips to follow: Use your oven to cook food only. Never use it to heat your home. Hire a qualified professional to clean and inspect heating equipment and chimneys every year. Turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed. Place a sturdy screen in front of your fireplace to prevent sparks from flying into the room, and burn only dry, seasoned wood. Allow ashes to cool before disposing them in a metal container, and ensure that they are kept a safe distance from the home. If you need to warm a vehicle, remove it from the garage immediately after starting it. Do not run a vehicle or other fueled engine or motor indoors, even if garage doors are open. Make sure the exhaust pipe of a running vehicle is not covered with snow. During and after a snowstorm make sure vents for the

BIDDEFORD – Southern Maine Health Care (SMHC) has been recognized by the Immunization Action Coalition (IAC) for achieving one of the highest reported rates in the state for its work to protect newborns from hepatitis B virus infection. The hospital is one of only 200 hospitals in the nation to administer the vaccine to more than 90 percent of newborns “Congratulations to the Birthing Suite staff for being recognized nationally for their efforts to ensure that babies born at SMHC are being protected against the hepatitis B virus, said SMHC President and CEO

Ed McGeachey. Southern Maine Health Care is the newest entry into IAC’s Birth Dose Honor Roll, which recognizes hospitals and birthing centers that have attained high coverage levels for administering the hepatitis B vaccine at birth. SMHC’s Birthing Suite immunized 94 percent of babies born between November 1, 2014 and October 31, 2015 and took additional steps to prevent perinatal transmission of hepatitis B. The national standard of care to prevent hepatitis B virus infection in babies is to administer hepatitis B vaccine to all newborns before they leave the

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~

Dear Computer Lady, How can I change my desktop icons so that they reflect what they are about, a picture of an envelope, a picture of a crochet hook, a planet etc. Thank you, Juliet Dear Juliet, It is actually quite easy to change the image of icons on your desktop. 1. Right click on the icon, and click, "Properties" from the context menu that appears. 2. Click on the, "Change Icon" button. Different types of links have that button in different places, but it is usually on the tab that is first displayed. 3. The, "Change Icon" dialog box will appear. Again, depending on the type of link you are working with, there might be a collection of icons displayed in the window, or you might need to use the,

"Browse" button to find them. 4. Click on the icon you want to use, then click the, "OK" button to close the dialog box and save your changes. There are several files in Windows that contain icons, one is shell32.dll, another is imagferes.dll and pifmgr.dll. They are located in C: \Windows\ System32\. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I would like to know what I should buy to improve my graphics and speed while playing games, especially GTA5 with all it's super high textures, shadows etc. I'm not exactly looking to have a certain brand recommended to me, but rather WHAT items I need to buy to improve my system. So, in short, what do I buy in order to speed up my FPS and improve graphics? Is it graphic cards? And can you have more

than one graphic card at the same time? Thanks! Kelly Dear Kelly, The short answer is that you do, indeed need a powerful graphics card. However, you can't just go out and buy one. You first need to know what will work in your computer. I'm assuming that you have a desktop computer (I am not aware of any way to add a graphics card to a laptop). You need to do a little research. You need to find out if your motherboard supports additional graphics cards and if the physical case has room for one or more. Motherboards come with different types of slots for cards, find out what yours has. Then, with that information in hand, look for a graphics card with the most onboard RAM you can afford. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have gotten myself into problems by installing programs that are supposed to make my computer operate more efficiently. I completely trust your advice. Is registry reviver by Riversoft a safe and reliable program that will do what it advertises to do? If not what program would you suggest.? They also offer a program to keep all my driver updates current. Please Help! Thanks so very much. You are a blessing to so many novice computer learners. Carroll

Dear Carroll, I am not a big fan of programs that claim to make your computer run faster or more efficiently. I am also not a big fan of driver update programs. Most of the time, these programs are just making empty promises so they can sell you their product, and many of them come with toolbars and helpers that slow your computer down even more. Instead of installing this type of program, I would suggest a couple of things. First, check for windows updates and install them every month. Windows updates often include driver updates for your computer. Second, run Disk Cleanup on your computer. This is available in all versions of Windows. Just open Windows Explorer, right click on your hard drive, click "Properties" and then click the "Disk Cleanup" button. These two features are already on your computer, won't cost you any money, and won't slow your computer down. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, My Dell Inspiron desktop computer is 6 years old and came with Vista. Now Vista is on the way out. I have saved a lot of family pictures, genealogy and other important stuff on Outlook Mail. I was assured by a friend that a technician can transfer everything to a new computer. I would like to save ALL the things

on Outlook 2007 to my WD 1.5T remote hard drive. I wonder if Is it possible for me to save this to my remote hard drive, just so I don’t lose it all...just in case. If so, how computer savvy must one be? Thank you! Betsy Dear Betsy, Actually, your Outlook (Not Outlook Express or Outlook.com, but Microsoft Office Outlook) mail and everything in it is in one file that is easy to backup. All you have to do is find it. Outlook stores all your messages, contacts and calendar entries in one file called a post office file. It ends with .pst. Here is how to find your .pst file: Start Outlook. On the Tools menu, click Options. On the Mail Setup tab, click the Data Files button. Note the path and file name of your .pst file. For example, C: \Exchange\Mailbox.pst indicates a .pst file that is named Mailbox.pst located in the Exchange folder on your drive C. Click Close, click OK, and then click Exit and Log Off on the File menu to quit Outlook. Now that you know where the file is located, you can copy it to your remote hard drive. On the Start menu, point to Programs, and then click Windows Explorer. Browse through the files to the location of your .pst file. Drag to copy your .pst file to the location that you want.
