Lisa Mills By Jesse Scardina, Staff Writer KENNEBUNKPORT There are few people that know the healing power that both music and giving back provide better than Lisa Mills. Mills has been a resident of Kennebunkport for more than three decades, yet her reach — or her voice — stretches from Portland to Boston. Mills is a professional musician, currently in four ensembles: Women of Note, longstanding a Capella group; The Windmills Band, a mix of blues,

Entertainer & Healer jazz country and rock music; Deep Blue “C” Studio Orchestra, a partnered project with the Berkley School of Music; and the Ocean Ave Band, another blues-centric act. While born in Detroit and raised on the sounds of MoTown, Mills adopted Kennebunkport when she moved here in the mid1980s with her late husband, Wesley Mills. Mills was a founding member of Women of Note, the popular a Capella group that has performed for the Bush family, at

the White House and at Carnegie Hall, as well as local venues and community events across York County. Music has always been a hobby for Mills, but for the past eight years, it’s also been her career, using her music to inspire hope and promote healing to communities of people — much like she received when her husband of 34 years died of cancer in 2016. “Music is therapy,” Mills said. They raised $5,000! They are hoping to surpass that amount this year. Special t-shirts will be on sale on the day at the Remember the Maine gift shop located next door to the Maine Diner. Each t-shirt will have a stack of pancakes on the front and will read “Get Stacked at the Maine Diner.” The back will read “Peace, Love and Pancakes,

Coach Lewia and the Wells High School wrestling team will be present at the diner on and off during the day, pending classes and practice schedules. The wrestlers will mingle, munch on pancakes, and may seek pledges for their challenge. Maine Diner’s business hours are 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. Donations will be accepted, that day as well as throughout the year, and can be made over the phone with a credit card. Kittery Hosts Sister School

KITTERY The Kittery School District was pleased to host its sister school from Rokunohe, Aomori Prefecture, Japan recently. The twelve students and four adults from Japan arrived in Boston on January 6 and spent a day touring Boston before arriving on January 7 in Kittery. The group of middle school-aged Japanese students were accompanied by their Superintendent of Schools, a member of the Board of Education, and a teacher of English at their junior high school. The group also included a trip guide

from Japan. The guests stayed with local families, learned about family life in Kittery, visited local sites, and spent some time in the Kittery School District. The Japanese students shadowed their Kittery hosts at Shapleigh School and taught lessons to the students. The presentations were a great demonstration of how the Japanese students are learning to speak English, and the Shapleigh School students learned something about Japanese culture and customs. Following a farewell breakfast at Shapleigh School on January 11, the group headed to New York City for a short visit before flying back to Tokyo. Eric Waddell, Superintendent of Schools in Kittery who participated in the Japan trip last summer, is proud to be fostering the 27-year-old friendship. “International travel promotes understanding and a celebration of differences,” Waddell noted. “The Kittery School District is a better place for

a pillar of the Kennebunkport community with how she volunteers her time and gives back. Mills became the Kennebunk Parks and Recreation commissioner for 13 years after initially volunteering and teaching in the children’s programs in the Rec department. Mills has also done extensive work with Gary’s House after the passing of Gary Pike in 2000 and has served on its committee. Mills philanthropic outlook dates back to when she was a child. “My parents taught me the value and importance of volunteering at a young age,” Mills said. “I started as a candy striper at local hospitals, nursing homes and middle school, and frequently sang at those facilities with my church choir.” Mill’s music career has brought her to some spectacular places like the aforementioned Carnegie Hall and White House, but it’s the more subtle, more intimate events that stay with her long after she’s done singing. Each year, Mills and an accompanying guitarist travel to different senior living homes in southern Maine and play for the residents. Mills said it’s extraordinary watching the memories flood back into the residents’ minds.

“There was this gentleman who was sitting there in his wheelchair, bent over, looking down, not engaged,” Mills said, recalling a previous visit. “Then we started playing something that had a good rhythm to it and all of a sudden he starts drumming, and he came alive. It’s moments like that which make you smile. That’s why I do what I do, to see that you can bring someone else joy.” For most of her life, music was just a hobby for Mills. But as her children grew and Mills and her husband became empty nesters, she decided it was time to make her hobby a central part of her life. “My primary focus had always been my family,” Mills said. “But my husband really pushed me to pursue what I love to do, and that’s music. That fueled me for the past eight years, but especially the past three and a half years since my husband’s passing. It’s been not only healing for me, but also for the rest of the community.” It’s combining those two traits — music and giving back — that has made Mills such an important figure in Kennebunkport, and it’s something Mills is appreciative of as well. “I feel so blessed to be part of this beautiful Kennebunk community,” Mills said.

~ News ~ Foundation Announces Great Outdoors Contest ALEXANDRIA, VA The TurfMutt Foundation announced their (Really) Great Outdoors Contest for 2020 which is focused on urging kids to use their imaginations around the many uses and benefits of green space and the outdoors. The contest, which is open to students in grades six to eight, drew over 2,700 submissions last year. Created in partnership with Scholastic, the global children’s publishing, education and media company, the contest encourages students to write about and/or draw a nature space their community could use. Students are also asked to include text to describe the space, discuss what elements are needed, and how their space will be used to benefit the

community. Each entry can be no more than three pages. “We mean it when we say nature starts at your back door. Introducing kids to the outdoors is good for them and good for all of us,” says Kris Kiser, President and CEO of the TurfMutt Foundation and the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute. “Family yards, school yards and parks are part of a vast ecosystem that supports all of us. The contest helps the next generation envision how people—wherever they may live—can spend time outside.” “Our winners last year imagined beautiful and, more importantly, functional and purposeful designs for green spaces,” said Kiser. “We want kids to under-

stand that our lawns and greenspaces are urban habitats. These spaces are critical to wildlife, pollinators, and the health and well-being of communities,” said Kiser. “They need to picture themselves within those greenspaces—and the contest is a great way for them to do that.” Ten thousand dollars in prizes will be awarded with a grand prize of $2,500 with teachers and the school each receiving a $750 prize. The first place student will receive $2,000 and the teacher and the school will each receive $500. The second place student will receive $1,500 and the teacher and the school will each receive $250. The third place student will receive $750 and the teacher and the school will each

receive $125. Teachers can download lesson plans and contest entry information from www.scholastic.com/turfmutt. Entries can be accepted online and uploaded by teachers, or mailed in by teachers or students alike. Submissions

office file. It ends with .pst. Here is how to find your .pst file: Start Outlook. On the Tools menu, click Options. On the Mail Setup tab, click the Data Files button. Note the path and file name of your .pst file. For example, C: \Exchange\Mailbox.pst indicates a .pst file that is named Mailbox.pst located in the Exchange folder on your drive C. Click Close, click OK, and then click Exit and Log Off on the File menu to quit Outlook. Now

that you know where the file is located, you can copy it to your remote hard drive. On the Start menu, point to Programs, and then click Windows Explorer. Browse through the files to the location of your .pst file. Drag to copy your .pst file to the location that you want. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have got myself into problems by installing programs that are supposed to make my computer operate more efficiently. I completely trust your advice. Is registry reviver by Riversoft a safe and reliable program that will do what it advertises to do? If not what program would you suggest.? They also offer a program to keep all my driver updates current. Please Help! Thanks so very much. you are a blessing to so many novice computer learners. Carroll Dear Carroll, I am not a big fan of programs that claim to make your computer run faster or more efficiently. I am also not a big fan of driver update programs. Most of the time, these programs are just making empty promises so they can sell you their product, and many of them come with toolbars and helpers that slow your computer down even more. Instead of installing this type of program, I would suggest a couple of things. First, check

for windows updates and install them every month. Windows updates often include driver updates for your computer. Second, run Disk Cleanup on your computer. This is available in all versions of Windows. Just open Windows Explorer, right click on your hard drive, click “Properties” and then click the “Disk Cleanup” button. These two features are already on your computer, won’t cost you any money, and won’t slow your computer down. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I would like to know what I should buy to improve my graphics and speed while playing games, especially GTA5 with all it’s super high textures, shadows etc. I’m not exactly looking to have a certain brand recommended to me, but rather WHAT items I need to buy to improve my system. So, in short, what do I buy in order to speed up my FPS and improve graphics? Is it graphic cards? And can you have more than one graphic card at the same time? Thanks! Kelly Dear Kelly, The short answer is that you do, indeed need a powerful graphics card. However, you can’t just go out and buy one. You first need to know what will work in your computer. which is acrylics, and their love of painting. Each artist has developed their own style. Local landscape, seascape and floral subjects are frequently the inspiration for their paintings. Several of the represented artists in the group have been invited to show their work in the

Kennebunk River Club show and some group members have also been successful in selling their work. All members paint for their personal enjoyment and individual painting goals and support each other in class. Often in class, one student’s work will open a discussion led by their teacher on an aspect of painting such as composition, color or form which is then useful for others. Many of the group members paint outside of class. The Center Artists group vary in ages between 60s and 90s. They exemplify the very worthwhile practice of lifelong learning and demonstrate that

new goals can be reached at any age. The show runs February 1-28. The public is invited to an artist’s reception on Tuesday, February 4, 5-7:30 p.m.

Art Guild of the Kennebunks Invite New Member Submissions KENNEBUNK The Art Guild of the Kennebunks invites artists to submit their art works for consideration to become members of the guild. As an AGK member, artists can display their works at wellattended exhibits held several times each year. In addition, members have their names, style of work and contact information published in the annual membership guide. AGK President Susan Mesick said, “We welcome artists to enter their art to be juried for acceptance into the guild. As a member of the guild you have the opportunity to sell your art in exhibits and take part in a variety of art related programs throughout the year. In addition, you’ll meet and share experience with other artists in the community. AGK has approximately 70 members.” Artists must preregister by March 24. For preregistration forms, guidelines, and details, email Membership Chairperson Sheila Clough at artguildofkennebunks@gmail. com (with “AGK Jury Process” in the subject line) or call 207651-5699. After preregistering, artists must submit five examples of art in one medium they feel best represents them as an artist. The work should be professionally presented. Judges look for consistency rather than diversity. There are two ways art-

ists can submit their art: (1) Digitally via email to artguildjury@gmail.com by March 24 or (2) by delivering their art on April 4, 12-1 p.m. to the Brick Store Museum, 4 Dane Street, Kennebunk. Artists must pick up their art at 3 p.m. the same day. Applicants will be notified by mail of the results of the jurying. The Guild also accepts non-juried, Associate Members, who may not exhibit their art, but who may participate in all other AGK activities and programs. Snow date for submissions is April 5.

Classic Film Series Continues with “All About Eve” It is considered by many to be the greatest film ever made about the theater and the sometimes backstabbing behind-thescenes world of show business. It remains as vital and fresh today as it did in 1950. The film stars Bette Davis

as Margo Channing, a highly regarded but aging Broadway star. Anne Baxter plays Eve Harrington, an ambitious young fan who manoeuvres herself into Channing’s life, ultimately threatening Channing’s career and her personal relationships. The film co-stars George Sanders, Celeste Holm, and features Gary Merrill, Hugh Marlowe, Thelma Ritter, and Marilyn Monroe in one of her earliest roles. The Academy Award-winning script by Joseph L. Mankiewicz is still considered one of the best screenplays ever written. It features some of the wittiest dialogue, most vivid multi-dimensional characters and most memorable lines ever to appear on film. The success of “All About Eve” completely resurrected Davis’ faltering career. Like Margo, the legendary actress was slipping into the film purgatory of middle age and was finding it increasingly difficult to find good parts. The role helped her transition into the meaty character parts of her

Health & Fitness January Named Radon Action Month in Maine – 5 Myths/Facts About Radon AUGUSTA Hiding in far too many homes is the second-leading cause of lung cancer, radon. “Radon is a naturally occurring gas that hides invisibly in homes, yet is the nation’s second-leading cause of lung cancer. Lung cancer remains the nation’s leading cause of cancer deaths, so to save lives people need to be aware of and take action on radon,” said Lance Boucher, Senior Division Director for State Public Policy for the American Lung Association in Maine. “The good news is that testing for and reducing the high radon levels is straightforward and effective. We encourage all families, schools and daycares to test for radon to protect everyone’s health, and we thank Governor Mills for declaring January as Radon Action Month in Maine.” This January, during Radon Action Month, the American Lung Association clears up five common myths around this deadly gas. Myth #1: Radon is not really harmful. Fact: Not only is radon invisible, it’s also radioactive. While you can’t see it, exposure to high levels of radon over time can cause lung cancer, according to the U.S. Surgeon General. In fact, radon ranks as the nation’s second-leading cause of the disease. Radon-related lung cancers are responsible for an estimated 21,000 deaths every year in the United States.

Myth #2: Radon is rare and doesn’t impact our community. Fact: The reality is that radon is found at dangerous levels in an estimated 1 in 15 homes nationwide. Your home can have elevated levels of radon while your neighbor’s home does not. It doesn’t matter in what part of the country you live. Radon comes from rock and soil, so it can be found anywhere. It then enters the home or building through cracks in walls, basement floors, foundation and other openings, and can exist at dangerous levels indoors. Myth #3: Testing for radon is expensive. Fact: The only way to detect dangerous levels of radon in your home is to test the air. Various do-it-yourself test kits are simple to use and

inexpensive. Some places offer free kits. Schools and daycares should use professional help to do the testing. Myth #4: Even if I test, I couldn’t afford to fix the problem. Fact: Fixing radon problems in most homes costs between $500 and $1,500— roughly the price of a new television or computer. Myth #5: Our schools are safe. Fact: Testing for radon in schools is not required in most states, nor is fixing the problem. Not only children, but teachers and other staff who work in schools can be exposed to dangerous levels of radon. The last nationwide survey of radon levels in schools, completed in 1993, found that nearly one in five schools had at least one classroom with dangerous

for radon in both schools and daycares. To learn more about radon and how to test homes, visit www.lung.org/radon or call the toll free Lung Help Line at 1-800-LUNGUSA.

Give Your Backside a Break: 4 Tips If You Sit For Extended Periods Sitting is nearly impossible to avoid. Whether during your daily commute, working hard at your desk or watching your favorite TV show on the couch, sitting can provide relief and give you the opportunity to relax. However, sitting for a long period of time can lead to some adverse health effects. According to a recent survey commissioned by Preparation H, 63% of Americans admit that staying seated for an extended period has resulted in butt pain or discomfort. While sitting may be one of our favorite positions, the following tips will help you diminish the harmful, but common, side effects of sitting and highlight how to give your backside the break it deserves. 1. Move bad posture out of the way Sitting down at a desk for eight hours at work each day is common for many professions, in addition to sitting during the commute to the office. For many, this is the preferred position, as one in four employed Americans would not show up to work if they could not sit down the entire time. However, sitting can have significant effects on our backs and spines,

causing pain and discomfort. To avoid bad posture and a stiff neck or back, take a quick walk around the office, find a longer route to the water cooler or grab a coworker for a few laps around the parking lot during lunch. If your office allows it, opt for a standing desk to get you off your butt and onto your feet. 2. Improve poor circulation Let’s face it – we all want to get home, kick off our shoes and get lost in our couch cushions for the rest of the night. However, sitting for too long causes your blood to remain in your feet and lower legs due to lack of movement, causing your body’s circulation to slow down and resulting in numbness and tingling. To break up your sitting marathon, try to perform a few simple bodyweight exercises during commercial breaks or use the time to get up and tidy your living room space. 3. Leave backside discomfort in the past Everyone uses the bathroom throughout the day, but some may spend a little too much time on the porcelain throne. The time spent sitting, as well as the habits associated with the activity, can ultimately contribute to the causes of hemorrhoid flare-ups, like constipation and

straining. When hemorrhoids do strike, Preparation H is the #1 doctor-recommended OTC hemorrhoid brand formulated to soothe, cool, cleanse and care for your backside. To help shorten the time spent on the toilet, avoid digital distractions, like your phone, that can lead to spending extended time sitting in the bathroom. 4. Bring the power back to your brain Your physical health isn’t

the only thing suffering from sitting – your mental health is affected as well. Sitting for extended periods can slow down brain function, leading to memory loss and a foggy brain feeling. If you’re feeling distracted or can’t seem to accomplish a task at hand, try getting up and going for a quick walk to help improve concentration and keep blood flowing to your brain so the next big idea is right around the corner. Whether it’s getting in an

extra couple of steps or banishing your phone from the bathroom, these small changes can be beneficial in reducing the negative effects of staying seated for too long. Sitting will inevitably be a part of your day, but by implementing these tips, you can give yourself a pat on the back for putting your health first. For more information on hemorrhoid relief, visit preparationh.com. The Weekly Sentinel does not endorse any products or services suggested by third-party sources.

Senators Support Creation of Three-Digit Suicide Hotline BRUNSWICK U.S. Senator Angus King (I-ME) cosponsored the National Suicide Hotline Designation Act, bipartisan legislation to designate a three-digit phone number for a national suicide prevention and mental health crisis hotline and ensure states have the flexibility to strengthen local crisis call centers. The current National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and Veterans Crisis line are each 10-digits, which creates an additional barrier to Americans in crisis seeking support. Maine lost 274 people to suicides in 2019, and data from the 2019 Maine Integrated Youth Health Survey indicates that 16.4% of Maine high school students seriously contemplated suicide in the past year – a total of approximately 8,900 students. “Each and every person we lose to suicide leaves behind heartbroken loved ones, grieving communities, and immense untapped potential,” said Senator King. “We need to do everything in our power to ad-

dress this ongoing crisis, and that starts with making it easier for people experiencing mental health emergency to get help. In times of crisis, every second counts – so let’s do away with these 10-digit, hard to remember numbers and take a real step to save lives.” “The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, the nation’s largest suicide prevention organization, applauds Senator King’s support for S.2661, the National Suicide Hotline Designation Act, to establish a three-digit hotline number (988) for individuals in crisis,” said Cathy Streifel, Board Member & Survivor Outreach Volunteer for the Maine Chapter of American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. “Suicide is the 9th leading cause of death in Maine and an accessible, easy-to-remember hotline number can save lives. We thank Senator King for prioritizing suicide prevention, and we urge his colleagues in the Senate to follow his lead.” The National Suicide Hot-

line Designation Act directs the FCC to designate 9-8-8 for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. This line would include the Veterans Crisis Line for veteran-specific mental health support. Additionally, the legislation will authorize the ability of states to collect fees to ensure local call centers are able to support increased volume. In addition to Senator King, the National Suicide Hotline Designation Act is also supported by Senators Cory Gardner (R-CO), Jerry Moran (R-KS), Jack Reed (D-RI), Jon Tester (D-MT), Todd Young (R-IN), Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ), Deb Fischer (R-NE), Elizabeth Warren (DMA), Marsha Blackburn (RTN), Michael Bennet (D-CO), John Barasso (R-WY), and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT). Senator King has advocated to expand access to mental health and suicide prevention services. In SeptemSee HOTLINE page 19...

Since they’ve come to the safety and security of AWS, they have worked hard on house training and getting used to household items, like tables, chairs and beds. While they sometimes get confused and try to chew on something they shouldn’t, they are learning quickly and look forward to their new people continuing their introduction to house-living. They are ready to become the wonderful family pets you’ve always dreamed of! As they adjust to their new environments, they will forget that they ever lived outdoors and relish their happy and loving new home. The adoption fee for this father-daughter duo is $99. Please come by the AWS Adoption Center to meet Pinky and Flash. We promise, you’ll fall for their good looks, entertaining personalities and loving spirits! Santa Paws Celebrated at EES ELIOT During the month of December, second-grade students and staff at Eliot Elementary School (EES) decided it would be a great idea to take part in a community service project called “Santa Paws” to help some very special 4-legged friends. Students and staff gathered items that were needed by local dog rescue organizations, 3 Dogs Rescue and The Grateful Dog Animal Rescue. On December 20 a representative (human and canine) from each group visited EES and students presented them with the items they had collected. Staff from each rescue took the time to talk with students about their experiences and the importance of dog rescue. At the delight of students, 3 Dogs Rescue asked each second grader to come up with a great name for a puppy and add it to a poster of names that they would keep handy and use to name future rescue pups!

WELLS Meet Spirit. Spirit needs a quiet home without other pets, and a daily routine that hums around her while she lounges in a comfortable chair and grooms herself or snoozes. Spirit asks for very little. A little petting, a little attention, a little food, and a little companionship. Someone she can trust and depend on. Spirit didn’t have a great start in life. She was brought to a holding facility where for two years her home was a stainless steel cage. She languished on the bottom row of a room full of cages and pens, housing an ever-changing line-up of other rightened animals, barking dogs, and hissing, growling cats. On one of our transports we met Spirit in a hot, dark, depressing, windowless room that was always humid, stinky and stale. When we were introduced to Spirit, all we could see were her glowing yellow eyes and white teeth that gleamed when she hissed at us. It was obvious she was very unhappy and needed to get out of there. Cats like Spirit define an organization. Sure, we could only rescue cats that are highly desirable but Safe Haven takes kitties who have run out of luck, and we make sure they get the best of the

best. We knew Spirit had to be a Safe Haven cat, where she would get whatever she needed. She deserved a break! From her housing she had a fungal infection, which we treated and found the right doctor that prescribed a medication that resolved the issue. We’ve publicized Spirit several times, but no one came forward. So she still waits. Now she’s in a room with other cats, but she simply ignores them. She’s still working things out in her mind. She doesn’t appreciate a lot of activity around her, whether it’s other animals or little children. It’s not that she’s nasty, she See HAVEN page 27...

Australia Bushfires: How to Help Devastating fires continue to burn across Australia, having burned more than 24.7 million acres. Two of the biggest, most devastating fires are in New South Wales and Victoria, which happen to be two of Australia’s most population-dense states. They have now merged to create a ‘megafire’. The first fires, called the “Peregian Fires”, were reported in September 2019. These were quickly followed by fires in the Northern Rivers, mid-North Coast, and Hunter regions of New South Wales. These fires were of particular concern due to their proximity to key koala populations and areas of core habitat. The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), one of the largest animal welfare and conservation charities in the world, immediately began to rescue injured wildlife, includ-

ing koalas. The organization even deployed “Bear”, IFAW’s koala detection dog, to locate koalas among the burned forests. Koalas are listed as vulnerable species in Queensland, New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory. Some local populations were already so small prior to the fires as a result of habitat loss, disease, car strikes, and dog attacks. According to ecologists, populations of species already in danger, will be pushed to the brink and experience ‘local’ extinctions. With these fires being so widespread and impacting key areas of koala habitat, now more than ever every individual animal matters in conservation. Bear, IFAW’s koala detection dog, is an integral part of search and rescue efforts to locate koalas suffering from the bushfires. Trained by IFAW’s partners at the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Detection Dogs for Conservation team, Bear is one of the few detection dogs in Australia able to locate live koalas through the scent of their fur. So far he has indicated the presence of possible koalas in the area at multiple spots, finding scratchings on trees and scat on the ground, giving great hope See KOALAS page 27...

Susan K Condon, 69 KENNEBUNKPORT – Susan Kajander Condon passed away peacefully at her home in Kennebunkport on January 15, 2020, after a good, full life. The daughter of Maxine (Lybeck) and Albert A. Kajander, Susan was born on June 25, 1950, in Winchester, Massachusetts, where she enjoyed a wonderful childhood and attended Winchester Schools. She graduated from Winchester High School in 1968, then went on to earn a teaching degree from UMass, Amherst, and a Masters in Counseling from Salem State. Although Susan lived in Winchester, she spent every summer of her life at Kennebunk Beach. Susan married Scott Condon in 1980 and had two daughters, Kate and Elizabeth. Then, as a single mother, Susan excelled at balancing home and career. She taught Middle School at both Ogunquit Village School and Wells Junior High, before retiring in 2015 after thirty years of teaching. Susan shined with positive energy and was always active, involved in many and varied sports and activities with many people all throughout her life. She loved to play tennis and was a member and former board member of Edgecomb, she played paddle at the Arundel Paddle Club, enjoyed ice-skating, and both cross-country and downhill skiing. Susan loved the outdoors and was an avid and accomplished gardener. She enjoyed daily walks with her many good friends along our beautiful coastline. Susan was also a skilled and talented knitter. Susan was many things to many people, but nothing in her life was as important to her or as precious as being “Mom” to her daughters and “Gam” to her grandchildren. Susan was predeceased by her parents, Maxine and Albert Kajander, and her daughter, Elizabeth Markham Condon. Susan is survived by her beTHANK YOU ST. High School. He had a love of the outdoors including hunting, fishing, 4-wheeling, camping, and spending time with his brother Matt, his three boys, and friends. Growing up, Luke drew people to him, always had the best sense of humor, was adventurous, and had a free-spirited soul. Luke was a very compassionate person and every person he met was profoundly touched by him. For all who loved him, we will continue to treasure our most cherished memories remembering all the special times. We will keep his memories alive by sharing his stories and forever celebrating him so that his boys grow up knowing what a compassionate, loving, and sensitive man their father was. Luke was survived by his mother, Jane Soucie of North Andover, MA, pre-deceased by his father, Matthew Soucie, Sr. of Wells. He is survived by his brother, Matthew Soucie of Wells, his sons, Ashton, Jaice, and Levi Soucie of Wells, pre-deceased by his grandparents Edith and Alfred Charest of North Andover, MA, and grandmother Helen Little of Lawrence, MA, and pre-deceased grandfather Clayton Soucie of Lawrence, MA. John F. Welch, 99 YORK BEACH – John F. Welch passed away peacefully on January 16, 2020 at Sentry Hill in York with his loving family by his side. He was born in Brockton, MA, on October 13, 1921. Shortly after his birth, he and his family moved to York where he attended the York Schools. He was an outstanding athlete, especially in basketball. After graduation he went to work as a shipfitter on the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. During this time, he met his future wife, Mary, who was working as a waitress at Garfield’s store in York Beach. They were married on April 25, 1942 at the York Town Hall. Seven months later he received his draft notice and spent the next 33 months fighting the war in the South Pacific, primarily in Okinawa. Upon his discharge from the service he returned to work at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard where he retired in 1976 after 36 years. After his retirement, he worked at Ellis Short Sands Park as a superintendent for

the next 35 years. He greatly enjoyed this time and made many good friends while mowing the lawn or scheduling bands for the Gazebo. He was very involved in many activities in the York Beach area, including being a part of the planning board for the York Beach Corporation, The York Little League, and the York Beach Fire Department, where he served as Assistant Chief from 1952-1974 and Chief from 1974-1991. While Chief, he had the foresight to start the first responder program in the town of York, which is now an integral part of the Fire Department. In June 2012, he was inducted into the York High School Athletic Hall of Fame for both his basketball skills and his 25 years of being score keeper for many of the games. Over the years he enjoyed playing golf as a member of the Cape Neddick Country Club, as well as his many trips with friends and family to play his favorite game of Blackjack in Las Vegas. PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never known to fail). O Most Beautiful Flower of Mt. Carmel, Fruitful Vine, Splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in this my necessity. O Star of the sea, help me and show here in, you are my mother. O Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in my necessity (make request). There are none that can withstand your power. O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3 times). Holy Mary, I place this cause in your hands (3 times). Say this prayer for three consecutive days. You must publish it and it will be granted to you. -- JMF --

We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

bereaved’s feelings in the patterns of community support which are psychologically beneficial. Flowers, however, express the inexpressible – they are symbolic.

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

Wells Girls Basketball “Shootin’ for a Cure” Program Raises $23K for Cancer Patients WELLS In keeping with tradition, the Wells Girls Basketball Teams’ annual Shootin’ for a Cure event was victorious on Saturday, January 18 on a day of free throw shootouts, basketball games and fundraising for York Hospital’s Living Well With Cancer Program. The team members proudly rounded out their day, presenting York Hospital with a check for $23,000, to bring the event’s eleven year total to $293,790! Coach Don Abbott, in his patented pink sweater said, “Once again the Wells/Ogunquit communities showed the power of compassion, love, and service to others. Shootin’ for a Cure, now in its eleventh year, continues to be a great source of pride for the Wells Lady Warriors and all of those involved.” This event began with a free throw shoot out, involving 55 girls in grades 5-12, who raised money through pledges, and culminated in an exciting win versus Kittery’s Traip Academy. After both Franny Ramsdell and Logan Bedell, tied for an impressive and nail-biting 44 out of 50 Free Throws, a shootout was held with Ramsdell the winner, sinking 5 out of 5 shots! for those in need. No species is untouched by these fires, but endangered species will suffer the greatest population loss at scale. The fires have killed more than 1 billion animals including mammals, birds and reptiles. This estimate does not include other animals such as insects, bats, frogs, and fish. Many animals who survived the initial fire will die from starvation, heat stress, loss of shelter and smoke inhalation as they battle to thrive in their decimated habitat. Australia is accustomed to an annual bushfire season – it’s not a case of if, but where. This year however, the fire season started much earlier than normal with unprecedented intensity and unpredictability. These fires are so powerful that they are creating their own weather systems with lightning sparking more spot fires. The conditions have been aggravated by months of severe drought, very dry fuels, dry soils, and excessive heat. Record breaking temperatures including days where weather conditions are considered “catastrophic” have also impacted wildlife with animals suffering dehydration such as the birds and flying foxes (bats) literally falling dead from the sky. Once rain comes, the ecosystem will be poised to recover. IFAW has ongoing projects such as their eucalyptus tree planting initiative which will help restore vital wildlife corridors. IFAW support and the disaster survivors desperately need help. Monetary donations can help supply food, housing, veterinary supplies, and cost of deploying Bear and his handler. If you’re not in a position to donate, we recommend that you share emails and social posts, and encourage others to donate to organizations like IFAW who are on the ground. And in the future, consider volunteering at your own local wildlife rescue group! This information was taken, with permission, from www.ifaw.org, where readers can find further details.

Spirit shows great potential to be a real honey pie. She loves catnip, and cat treats and even enjoys a little play. We have faith that for every special kitty we rescue, there’s a special person out there, and together both their lives will be more meaningful and joyful. Call us 207-646-1611 if that’s you.
