Maine Diner to Raise Funds on Blueberry Pancake Day WELLS The Maine Diner in Wells has been serving blueberry pancakes since the mid-eighties. Serving pancakes may be an everyday event at the Maine Diner, but Monday, January 28 is National Blueberry Pancake Day and the Maine Diner has something very special planned. They will be charging $1 per pancake or $3 for a stack. For each pancake sold, proceeds will go to a charity fundraiser close to the hearts of Maine Diner employees: Cure Sanfilippo Syndrome, a disease that is often called Childhood
Alzheimer’s. A former Wells High School wrestler is raising a young child who is afflicted with Sanfilippo Syndrome. Scott Lewia, the Wells High School wrestling coach, chal-
lenged his wrestlers to a “pin and win” fundraiser. Each wrestler will seek pledges for each pin and win they earn. People can also donate flat amounts in the name of the wrestler. Last year their goal
was to raise $2,500 and they raised five times that amount! This is the Wells High School wrestling team’s second year raising funds for Cure Sanfilippo Syndrome and Maine Diner wants to help. Special t-shirts will be on sale on the day at the Remember the Maine gift shop located next door to the Maine Diner. Each t-shirt will have a stack of pancakes on the front and will read “Get Stacked at the Maine Diner.” The back will read “Peace, Love and Pancakes, Bringing Awareness to Sanfilippo Syndrome 2019, Our
Favorite Short Stack Spencer Smith”. Coach Lewia and the Wells High School wrestling team will be present at the diner on and off during the day, pending classes and practice schedules. The wrestlers will mingle, munch on pancakes and seek pledges for their “pin and win” challenge. Maine Diner business hours are 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Please visit for delicious pancakes and raise funds to help cure Sanfilippo Syndrome, Spencer Smith, and other children afflicted with disease.

Although most people don’t realize it, during the first 16 years of its existence, the Statue of Liberty was managed by the United States Lighthouse Board as an actual aid to navigation. It was also the first permanently electrified lighthouse in the United States operated by the lighthouse keepers using an onsite power plant. Among the never before published images in the January/ February 2019 edition of Lighthouse Digest are photographs of Albert E. Littlefield, a native of
Kennebunk, who was the head keeper for the entire 16 years that the Statue of Liberty operated as a lighthouse. There are also images of assistant keeper Charles Miller who, from 1890 to 1892, kept a daily journal that detailed duties, rescues, wildlife problems, and even finding dead bodies washed up on the island during morning rounds. The Lighthouse Digest article, which includes over two dozen rare photos, tells how the government also had trouble attracting reliable assistant keepers
for the Statue of Liberty during its first four years of operation; 12 of the first 14 didn’t last a year. There were also some nefarious
assistant keepers; one was found to be a member of the “Masked See STATUE page 28...

~ News ~ Music Boosters to Hold Annual “Winter Weed-Out” WELLS For the month of February, the Music Boosters of Wells High School will hold their fourth annual textile fundraising drive to raise funds for the WHS Music Boosters and the Epilepsy Foundation of New England. The fundraiser, called a “Winter Weed-Out”, is
a great way for one to make a non-monetary donation to two worthy causes plus accomplish some ‘weeding out’ of closets. Over the past three years, the Boosters group has gathered 57,000 pounds of textiles and raised $11,000. During that time the drive has become a multi-community effort with many looking forward to contributing. The following is a list of what can be accepted for the drive: clothing (gently used or new clothing without any attached price tags is preferred however any clothing will be accepted), clothing accessories (ties, scarves, belts, shoes/ boots), linens (towels, bedding, table cloths, etc.), curtains,
purses, fabrics, uniforms, costumes, slip covers, handbags, and backpacks. (Please note that wet items, household items and books are not allowed in this textile drive.) If you have any of these items that you would like to donate, please bag them up in new garbage bags and deposit them in the designated blue Epilepsy barrels located at Wells Town Hall, the Wells-Ogunquit CSD Superintendent’s Office, Wells High School, Wells Junior High School, Wells Elementary School, Matt’s Barbershop in Wells or the office of Prime Storage in Wells during regular business hours. ~ Arts & Entertainment ~ OPA Screens Guys and Dolls OGUNQUIT Ogunquit Performing Arts opens the romantic month of February with Frank Loesser’s award-winning, colorful hit musical, “Guys and Dollsâ€?, starring Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons, Frank Sinatra and Vivian Blaine, with exciting dance numbers by Michael Kidd. “Guys and Dollsâ€? is a fable about gambling men, and the women who try to tame them. Set in the showy, seamy world of New York’s Times Square in the mid-20th century, the flashy and witty “Guys and Dollsâ€? is populated with gangsters and gamblers, thugs and mugs, missionary dolls and scantily clad showgirls, and one of the great musical scores in the history of American theatre. It all begins with a bet. In a desperate effort to finance a location for “The Oldest Established
Permanent Floating Crap Game in New Yorkâ€? and under pressure from its gangster participants, Nathan Detroit (Sinatra) bets high-rolling gambler Sky Masterson (Brando) that Sky cannot persuade Save-A-Soul Mission Sergeant Sarah Brown (Simmons) to accompany him on a trip to Cuba. While the worldly Sky works his charms on a wary Sarah, Nathan is doing his best to stay outside the matrimonial clutches of his longsuffering fiancĂŠe, showgirl Miss Adelaide (Blaine). Songs include well-known Loesser favorites, including such dynamic ensembles as “Luck Be a Ladyâ€?, “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boatâ€?, “Fugue for Tinhornsâ€? KITTERY Boston’s Lookie Lookie Band returns to The Dance Hall for a hot night of Latin music on Friday, January 25. Listeners who have heard Lookie Lookie know it’s an entertaining show full of irresistible melodies and rhythms, more than a dash of humor, and a warm, welcoming vibe. You don’t need salsa skills to dance to Bugalú – you can free form, rock’n’roll style, and if you have them, use your best couple dancing moves. Lookie Lookie plays Latin Bugalú, a crossover genre invented by Newyorican musicians in the 1960s. Incredibly fun and catchy, Bugalú lies somewhere between the stately Cuban sounds of the ‘50s and the manic high salsa of the ‘70s. Top artists included Pete
Rodriguez, Joe Cuba and Ricardo Ray, whose tunes form the backbone of the band’s repertoire. The band is named for an early Ricardo Ray hit, “Lookie Lookie,” which encapsulates some of the panAmerican fusion that went into Bugalú. Lookie Lookie is an allstar lineup of Boston music veterans. Music director Russ Gershon is a Grammy-nominated arranger for his work with the Either/Orchestra, and has played with Cab Calloway, the Four Tops, and Morphine among others; percussionist/

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~
Dear Computer Lady, In the past, my PDF documents could be saved and stored in a Word folder. Now, my PDF documents have a firefox icon, open on an online page, and save to my word documents ready to return to the internet. What’s going on? Am I in the cloud and don’t know it? Why are my PDF documents opening the internet when I want to read them? Sincerely, Joy Dear Joy, Although I can’t tell for sure without looking at your computer, it sounds like your file association for .pdf files has been changed to open in FireFox instead of Adobe Acrobat Reader. There are a couple of ways you can fix this. The easiest way might be to go to
www.adobe.com and download and re- install Adobe Acrobat Reader. Reinstalling the program should reset the file association and all .pdf files will once again open in Adobe. The other way is to reset the file association in Windows. You didn’t mention which version of Windows you are using, but this will work for Windows 10: 1. Open the Control Panel, (tap the start button and type “Control Panel” and press “Enter”) click on “Programs” then click on “Default Programs” and “Set your default programs”. 2. Scroll down to the bottom of the page, and click “Choose default apps by file type”. 3. You will see a list of file types on the left. Scroll down until you find your .pdf listed and click the icon to the right of it. 4. You will see

a list of programs, select the one you want to use to open .pdf files in the future. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have 2 usb ports and 4 slots on the front of my computer. How do I know which on is E F G H etc. I have an external drive and It uses I but Family Tree Maker does not give me that options. Thanks, Sara Dear Sara, The only real way to know for sure is to plug in your device and see what drive letter it uses. Here is how: 1. Open your “My Computer” window. You don’t mention what version of Windows you are using, but you would either click on “Start” and then “My Computer” or just “Computer”. In Windows XP or older, double click on the “My Computer” icon on your desktop. 2. Take note of the drives listed in the window, then insert your usb or other device. 3. Watch your, “My Computer” window, and in a few seconds, your new device will be assigned a drive letter and appear in the window. 4. The memory card slots will always use the same drive letter, so you can mark each slot somehow for future reference. A USB device won’t always use the same drive letter, so you might have to check each time. Elizabeth
emails for quite some time and they are very helpful so first let me say Thank you for all your help, I have helped others with your columns. My question is-I want to move some files with pictures and other info to an external hd which I know how to do but once they are on the external can I now delete them from my desktop pc and will I be able to retrieve them again? Hope this is not to complicated. Thanks again. Mary Dear Mary, You actually have the hardest part done already, since you have backed up your files to the external hard drive. Once you have copied your files to the external hard drive, you can delete them from your desktop and still be able to get them back, or use them from the external hard drive. This is not, however, how I would do it. If files (like family photos) are important to you, you want to have them in more than one location, in fact, the best practice is to have them in three locations, with at least one of these locations physically away from the others. Let me explain. If you copy your files
to the external hard drive, and delete them from your computer, you will have access to them unless (or until) the external hard drive stops working. It could be damaged from a fall, from a magnetic force, or even from theft or fire. Even if none of those things happen, all hard drives die eventually from old age, for some it is a year or two, but for many, it is between 5 and 10 years. The reality is that you just never know when it will happen. If you keep a copy of those files in a second location, either on your computer, or perhaps on a CD or DVD, you will still have a backup copy when the external hard drive gets old or damaged, but if the second copy is in the same physical location as your first copy, you would still lose them in the case of theft, flood, or fire. To protect your important files against all types of loss, you really need a third backup that is in a different physical location. Some businesses, have a backup system that includes a weekly rotation to an offsite location like a safety deposit box. Health & Fitness Protecting Private Drinking Water Many people do not give much thought to their drinking water or where it comes from, only paying mind if the color, taste or pressure is unusual or if warnings are issued in the event of a water main break or flood. Water for homes and businesses is often sourced from municipal water sources, but private wells also provide water. According to the U.S. Census Housing Survey 2015, 13 million households in the United States rely on private wells to supply their water. Many of these homes are located in hard-to-reach or rural areas where municipal water pipes do not travel. Public water supplies are typically overseen by a governing body, such as the United States Environmental Protection Agency. However, these organizations may not regulate private wells, nor will they provide recommended criteria or standards for individual wells. As a result, it is up to individuals to make sure their well water is safe for consumption. Private well owners may be surprised to learn that, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, at least 20 percent of private wells contain contaminants, of which 23 percent have levels high enough to be a potential health concern. Well water is groundwater found in subterranean aquifers. This groundwater comes from rainfall that is absorbed in the soil and slowly seeps downward through the dirt, rock and various underground spaces. Along this path it can pick up contami-
nants. Common sources of contaminants include farm waste, fertilizers and pesticides, chemical spills, poorly maintained septic systems, and seepage from landfills. Arsenic is also naturally occurring in groundwater, and in some areas the levels are above the EPA threshold for safety. Unfortunately, many contaminants are undetectable to the eyes, nose and mouth. And unlike public drinking water systems, people with wells typically do not test their water as often as they should. The EPA says that well water should be tested annually for bacteria and nitrates. The environmental medicine experts at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey suggest testing for lead, arsenic, radon, uranium, and other heavy metals every three to five years. The National Groundwater Association says county

health departments can conduct water tests for bacteria and nitrates. Those who want to test for other substances can get a list of state-certified drinking water testing labs. The Well Wise program is administered by the Ontario Ground Water Association and can provide water testing for consumers. This is a good place to start for Canadian residents. This free event, from 5:307:30 p.m., will begin with a discussion on what it means to be a “Recovery Ally” to someone whose life has been impacted by a substance use disorder. Recovery Allies are family members and friends of people in recovery, treatment providers, professionals, community groups and concerned citizens who share an interest in supporting people in recovery from substance use disorder. A light dinner will be provided for those in attendance, and the night is an opportunity to learn how to be an ally and become someone who provides meaningful nonjudgmental
support, empathy and encouragement to people in recovery. Other topics of discussion will include: how addiction is a complex brain disease, how you can help someone you care about, the difference between a Recovery Ally and a Recovery Coach, and what recovery looks like. For more information about the event or to RSVP, contact York Hospital Friendraising at 207-351-2385 or info@yorkhospital.com. Learn the Facts About Devastating Wildfires Deadly wildfires ravaged thousands upon thousands of acres of land across California in the summer of 2018. Officials at the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said these combined fires comprised the largest wildlands fire in state history. Frightening images of blazes consuming landscapes dominated newscasts as thousands of people were forced to evacuate. Wildfires torch everything in their paths, devastating communities, businesses and natural resources. Outbreaks seems to come out of nowhere, and meteorologists are not yet able to forecast when wildfires may occur.
It is important to note that wildfires are often started by humans. The National Park Service says as many as 90 percent of wildland fires in the United States are caused by negligence — whether it’s discarded cigarette butts or campfires left unattended. Some are intentional acts of arson. Nature also may be responsible, with lightning strikes causing torching of parched plants and trees. When combined with the perfect conditions, which can include dry weather, drought and strong winds, a mere spark can develop into a months-long blaze. The NPS has wildland fire managers who constantly assess the threat of human-caused fires

and the threat of wildland fires to humans. Assessments are made as to whether the wildfire should be left to run its course (in rural areas) or it should be contained and extinguished in a humandominated landscape. National Geographic states that, historically, wildfires are actually supposed to be beneficial to certain natural landscapes, clearing underbrush in forests and triggering the release of seeds in some plant species, such as the Jack pine. However, when they encroach on people, their danger intensifies. According to Cal Fire, Santa Ana Winds and Diablo Winds are stronger-than-normal wind conditions that occur in Southern and Northern California, respectively. These winds can push a fire the length of a football field in a minute. Embers also pushed in front of fires become small spot fires. Powerful winds can disrupt efforts to extinguish fires, dissipating fire retardants dropped by aircraft. Wildfires can wreak havoc on the environment and impact personal health. Worldwide, wildfire smoke kills 339,000 people per year according to estimates from Environmental Health Perspectives. Inhaling smoke can exacerbate asthma, and carbon monoxide can damage the respiratory system.

Considering how difficult it can be to contain fires, prevention remains key. Remember Smokey Bear’s tips, which remain rellevant for kids and adults today: Never play with matches or lighters in the forest; Always watch your campfire; Always be careful with fire; Make sure a campfire is completely extinguished before leaving it; Observe posted fire-risk
warnings. Wildfires remain a constant threat wherever the conditions are right for fires to ignite. People need to be diligent in their prevention of these potentially far-reaching hazards. The Weekly Sentinel does not endorse any products or services suggested by third-party sources.

Health & Fitness York County Food Pantry Reminds Locals Help is Available
ALFRED Because of the ongoing partial government shutdown, the York County Shelter Programs Food Pantry in Alfred is reminding local people who are impacted that the pantry is available as a resource. About 800,000 federal employees have not received their most recent paychecks since the shutdown began December 21. “We can help people in direct need of food, or who need help alleviating some of their financial stress by allocating food budget money to other critical expenses, such as fuel and housing costs,” said Bob Dawber, YCSP CEO. Scott Davis, the pantry’s Director of Food Services, said that YCSP had contacted families of local Coast Guard employees who are currently working without pay. Davis noted that the pantry is wellstocked and is prepared for unexpected events such as this. “We have always been ready to help people experiencing a food crisis that may arise unexpectedly, as well as people who struggle to make ends meet and need our help for the longterm,” Davis said. The pantry supplies food to about 2500 to 3000 area residents every month. Local businesses such as Walmart and Hannaford are regular contributors, as are other businesses and residents who make donations. The food pantry is at 5 Swetts Bridge Road, off Route 4 in Alfred. It is open Tuesday and Friday, noon to 3 p.m. Mike Ouellette, YSCSP’s Food Pantry Coordinator, said that anyone needing assistance who
cannot get to the pantry during those hours can call YCSP at 207-324-1137, ext. 103, or email YCSP at info@ycspi.org to make other arrangements. YCSP also has a Facebook page, where messages can be sent. “We also wanted to say to those who want to help their neighbors during this trying time to consider making a food or other donation to the pantry, or by volunteering at the pantry,” Dawber said. Dawber noted that if the shutdown continues into February it may impact those who receive federal assistance through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). SNAP recipients will be receiving their benefits for February, which were issued January 17. “If SNAP recipients are also impacted by the shutdown, we want them to know we are here to help,” Dawber said.
...TEXTILES from page 8 Please note the hours of operation for each of the above locations and please do not leave bags outside any of these donation drop spots. Tax donation receipts and extra bags will be available with the blue barrels. In addition to the above locations, this collection drive also includes a “Stuff-the-BandTruck” event and “Personal Pick-Up” on February 16 and 23 from 8 a.m. until noon. On those days the Wells-Ogunquit Music Booster white truck will be parked and ready for donation bags at the Wells Transfer Station. Or, one can schedule

More Than $1 Million for Maine Protection for DOE Announced Workers Passes Senate WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senator Angus King (I-Maine) announced that the Government Employee Fair Treatment Act, bipartisan legislation he cosponsored to protect federal and other government workers impacted during the shutdown, passed the Senate by Unanimous Consent. Currently, 420,000 federal workers are working without pay, and another 380,000 have been sent home without pay until the shutdown ends. “Hundreds of thousands of federal employees, through no fault of their own, are scrambling to be sure they can make ends meet during the government shutdown,” Senator King said. “These men and women are dedicated public servants, and they should never have to sacrifice the paychecks they rely on to provide for them and their families – they should never have to worry about how to keep a roof over their head, or put food on the table. “The President’s unwilling-
ness to engage in the Congressional process and open the government is a misguided attempt to fund his undefined ‘wall’ and it comes at the expense of 800,000 Americans and their families. We must immediately reopen the government so we can fulfill our responsibility to these men and women. With the passage of this common sense bill in the Senate this evening, we have taken a step in the right direction to protect federal workers hardearned paychecks and ensure the financial stability they deserve.” The bill, introduced last week by Senators Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Ben Cardin (DMd.), would guarantee that furloughed federal employees will be paid retroactively and stipulates that all employees shall be paid as soon as possible after the lapse in appropriations ends. The bill also clarifies that excepted employees who have scheduled previously approved leave occurring during an appropriations lapse may indeed take that leave without undue penalty.
WASHINGTON, DC U.S. Senators Susan Collins (R-ME), a member of the Senate Education Committee, and Angus King (I-ME) announced that the Maine Department of Education (DOE) received $1,011,080 for the Every Student Succeeds Act’s (ESSA) Preschool Development Grant program. This funding was awarded through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families. “The Maine Department of Education works in partnership with educators, schools, and communities throughout our state to provide all Maine students with access to quality education that
leads to successful lives and careers,” said Senators Collins and King in a joint statement. “We welcome this important investment, which strengthens Maine’s efforts toward building strong early learning systems aligned with K-12 education and improving transitions from early learning programs to kindergarten.” ESSA’s Preschool Development Grants program provides competitive grants, managed jointly by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Education, for states to improve coordination, quality, and access for early childhood education for low- and moderate-income children from birth to age five.
Grants Available for York County Nonprofits YORK COUNTY Nonprofit and public organizations seeking funding for projects that strengthen communities are encouraged to apply to the York County Fund, part of the Maine Community Foundation’s Community Building Grant Program. The deadline for applying is February 15, 2019. Application, guidelines and a list of 2018 grants are available at www.mainecf.org. A volunteer committee of York County residents and leaders reviews grants and makes recommendations for funding.
In 2018, the committee awarded more than $60,000 in grants to 10 nonprofits. The York County Fund was established in 2007. The fund invests in local projects and organizations that work to build strong communities. Headquartered in Ellsworth, with additional personnel in Portland, Dover-Foxcroft, and Mars Hill, the Maine Community Foundation works with donors and other partners to improve the quality of life for all Maine people. To learn more about the foundation, visit www.mainecf.org.

...COMPUTERS from page 12 ent family members’ homes. I like to use the cloud for my off site backup. Both Carbonite and Mozy are great for offsite backup because they work automatically in the background while you are using your computer. I hope this information will help you keep your photos and other information safe and sound. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I can’t get my text bigger in Facebook. Thanks, Nancy Dear Nancy, I am going to start out by assuming that you are viewing Facebook on your PC computer (not a phone or tablet) and that you are using a web browser, probably Internet Explorer, or possibly Chrome or FireFox to view Facebook. If this is the case, you just need to open Facebook in your browser, hold down the “Ctrl” key and scroll up or down to make the page bigger or smaller. Make sure that you have the focus on the web page you are viewing, you can click once on the page if you are unsure. There is also a menu that controls the size of your web page view. In Internet Explorer, click the gear in the upper-right corner of your window, point to “Zoom” in the drop down menu, then select a percentage to view your page at. In Chrome, click the menu icon in the upper-right corner of the window, go to the “Zoom” section and click the plus or minus symbol to increase or decrease the size of your page. In FireFox, click the menu icon in the upper-right corner of the window, and click the plus or minus symbol in the second row to increase or decrease the size of your page. Hope this helps, Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Browse Elizabeth’s articles, watch instructional videos, ask questions, and view comments at www.askthecomputerlady.com.

~ Pets ~ Animal Welfare Society KENNEBUNK Meet Tallulah: 3 year old Hound Mix. Oh Tallulah, we love ya, but boy, are you are a HOT MESS! New situations? You’re not a fan! Extra people coming in the room? Yikes! No one around? OH NO! You can’t cope! Yes, Tallulah, you suffer from anxiety, and lots of it. So many of us can relate – it can be tough not being able to calm down and feel safe, right? But Tallulah, it’s not a big, bad world out there and we – and your future people – are here to give you the love and support you need to live your best life. Trust us! There is a family out there – waiting to be your “emotional support people! General angst and separation anxiety are horrible, especially for a dog that doesn’t know how to calm herself. Tallulah can resort to destructive and perhaps dangerous behaviors when she’s anxious – jumping out of a second story window because she can’t stand to be alone – only Tallulah would do that! Tallulah, you silly girl, you can’t fly! This is how she infamously broke her foot. Upon returning to AWS this summer, we found her the most amazing foster home to recover from this unfortunate injury. In the time Tallulah has been at AWS and with foster, we’ve learned a few things about this very special pup that will help us find the perfect home for
Animal Welfare Society
Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS Rascal always hated car rides, so frequent long trips for him were totally out of the question. Unfortunately Rascal’s family was going to be on the
her and keep her from “flying anywhere else. Tallulah’s needs are very specific so she is looking for a very specific home: 1. Constant companionship - because Tallulah’s separation anxiety is so severe, it is recommended she is not left alone for any time; she’d love to have someone home most of the day or be able to accompany her person to their office (so long as it’s calm and quiet, like home) 2. Dedicated, knowledgeable owners - Tallulah’s not for the novice dog family. Her new people should be very comfortable with handling a large, spirited dog, have confidence in using calming techniques to help her relax and learn self-control. Her family should be able to provide her with a regular routine to keep her comfortable 3. Canine Bestie - she loves having a doggy friend at home to cuddle with and share adventure with (but no cats or small animals, the hound in her can’t resist) 4. Calm & Quiet - like most introverts, Tallulah needs
a calming, relaxing place called home, to recharge and recover from the day’s activities. A regular routine and a safe space (crate) can help provide this for her 5. Regular meds - Tallulah is on a number of meds to control her anxiety and she would need to remain on such medications (upon the advice of a veterinarian) to keep her mental health on an even keel for life 6. Comfortable adventures - Tallulah is a young, boisterous pup who needs regular exercise and enrichment, but the usual places like dog parks, the beach, crowded neighborhood walks, are not for her. She needs a fenced-in yard where she and her people can run and play together. She can take walks, but does get anxious in new places and worked up around unknown people and pets. 7. Wholehearted love - Tallulah loves her people with all her heart and like all dogs, deserves the same in return. No doubt, she’s a handful but she’s so worth it and will return the love ten-fold. Call AWS at 207-985-3244 ext. 127 to talk with our foster manager Marie and see if you could be just what Tallulah needs in a new home.

road and they were heartbroken facing this decision. But after consulting their vet and searching their hearts, they felt they couldn’t put Rascal on the road as frequently as their new life would require. Luckily, Rascal’s family decided that Rascal would be happiest at Safe Haven. We ached for his family because they loved him so much and it was painful watching them say goodbye, but we assured them that Rascal would be very loved, and that we would find him a great forever home. Once at Safe Haven, Rascal settled in pretty well. He’s a handsome, laid-back kitty with the confidence and coolness needed to fit right into a new setting. Rascal will jump into your lap but he’s not really a cuddler. He doesn’t care to play, just likes to be calm. He doesn’t appreciate the presence of other kitties, but did once live nicely with a dog. This big, beautiful 13 yearold short-haired gray and white tiger is a beefy fellow. Although not overweight, Rascal is on a weight management diet to maintain his excellent health and proper weight. This week, Rascal is going to have some dental work done, then he’ll be ready for adoption. Because he’s a senior cat, there’s no adoption fee for Rascal. Please come and meet him at our Adoption Center, 1420 Post Road, Route 1, next to the Wells Public Library from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday - Saturday. Call 207-646-1611. The kitties at our shelter need clumping litter, Friskies canned cat food, Temptations treats and trash bags and special
toys like laser lights and catnip items like “Cosmic Catnip Bananasâ€? are always welcome. Our thrift shop is getting a fresh coat of paint, and our men’s clothing dept. is getting a much needed makeover with new wall shelving. Please bear with us during improvements. Also, please don’t bring large quantities of donations to us until next week, as we need space for lumber, saws and ladders. Small donations are still welcome, of course: good quality housewares, home dĂŠcor, clothing and books are always welcome. A Brief History of American Football
According to Nielsen, 111.3 million people tuned in to watch the Super Bowl in early 2017. Almost two-thirds of adults in the United States say they currently watch National Football League games. But American football is no longer relegated to the boundaries of the United States, as it is becoming a global sport. According to the International Federation of American Football, there are 80 countries with organized federations governing the game. Plus, thousands of youth and adult leagues exist all over the world. Even though soccer has long been a global sport, it seems the other kind
of “football is quickly catching up. The sport known as American football was borne out of the English sports of association football (soccer) and rugby. During the late 19th century, elite Northeastern colleges took up the sport, playing a soccer-type game with rules adopted from the London Football Association. Intercollegiate matches began to spring up at schools such as Rutgers, Princeton, Harvard, and McGill University. Rugbytype rules became preferential among players and spectators. Walter Camp, known affectionately as the “Father of
American Football, transformed the rugby-style game into the one that resembles American football today. Camp brought two key innovations to the game. The opening “scrummage was eliminated, and a rule was introduced that required a team to give up the ball after failing to advance down the field a specific yardage. Camp also developed the quarterback position, lines of scrimmage and the scoring scale used in football today. Early games were controversial because of the high rate of injury. Even President Theodore Roosevelt stepped in to ask collegiate teams to

Lee was predeceased by her father Richard Hurst in 1999. Surviving are her mother, Elizabeth (Betty) Hurst of Rockport, MA; two sons, Michael Porper and companion, Ashley Gross and Jarred Porper and companion, Kayla Chandler of North Berwick; daughter Lisa Pento and husband David of Londonderry, NH; two brothers, Rick Hurst of Gloucester, MA and Stephen Hurst and wife Robyn of Salisbury, MA; eight grandchildren, Maria, Carina, Alyssa and David Pento, Jr, Myiah and Grace Porper, Nolan Porper and
Avery Chandler; her longtime companion, Tom Legg of Wells; as well as aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and so many special friends. A time of visitation will be held Friday, January 25, 5-8 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market Street, North Berwick. A mass of Christian burial will be held at a later date in Gloucester, MA. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery, Gloucester, MA. Friends who wish may contribute to Another Chance Animal Rescue, P.O. Box 552, North Berwick, ME 03906. Arrangements are entrusted to the Johnson Funeral Home in North Berwick, where condolences may be expressed at www.johnsonfuneralhomeme.com.
...PORPER from page 22 Lee raised her family in Gloucester, MA before moving to North Berwick in 1986. She worked as a waitress at Pat’s Deli, Billy’s Chowder House and the Omelette Factory. Lee enjoyed a simple life in Maine; basking in the sun on the beach and the sea roses and adored animals. She had a beautiful soul and helped people in any way she could. Lee had a wonderful sense of humor and her laugh was infectious. Lee made many friends throughout the years who will remember her for her kindness and caring heart and she was a fabulous cook. Her relentlessness to keep pushing thru all of life’s struggles made her the strong person she was. Lee loved her Thursday night date nights with Tom. She had a deep sense
revise regulations to make the game less brutal. The committee overseeing the rules would later become known as the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Thanks largely in part to the popularity of college football, professional football began to gain traction with the public. The American Professional Football Association was formed in 1920. That league would later become

the National Football League. The first televised NFL game occurred in 1939. Eventually, American football’s popularity would explode. Cheerleaders were introduced to the game in the 1960s. Currently, the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders are the most famous squad. Six teams in the NFL do not have cheerleaders: the Chicago Bears, the Cleveland Browns, the Detroit Lions, the New York Giants, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Green Bay Packers. Football games typically last around 3 hours. Average attendance for an NFL game is 66,957 spectators. American football has become a multibillion-dollar industry. Burglar Gang and another later served 20 years in prison for murdering his mistress. Tim Harrison, editor of Lighthouse Digest said, “There have been countless books and articles written about the Statue of Liberty, but other than briefly mentioning the Lighthouse Board, none have ever gone into any detail on the lives of the keepers and their families who lived with them at the lighthouse, let alone publish photos of them. He continued by saying “The fact that no one has ever attempted to research, save, and then publish the history of the lighthouse keepers of the Statue of Liberty, was a national travesty, one that has now been corrected. Harrison said that Part II of the article on the Statue of Liberty, also with many never before published photos, will be in the March/April edition of Lighthouse Digest.
