Ambulance Volunteer Andrews Celebrates 45 Years of Service YORK On January 16, prior to the regular monthly meeting, a reception was held to honor Mary Andrews who has been a volunteer at York Ambulance since its inception, in 1972. Lew Butler spoke about Mary and the formation of York Ambulance as follows: Mary was an original crew member and was the first Chief of Operations. She housed the first vehicle on her property with its power cord pluggedin inside her home. In those

days, there were three requirements for crew members: that they take a CPR course, they successfully complete a 6-hour Advanced First Aid course and they live within a 15-minute radius of the ambulance vehicle. There were 3-person crews at that time. By 1984, Mary had become President of the Board of Directors, a position she held until 2016. In 1984, the Association consisted of both volunteer drivers and paid personnel. York Ambulance had its own

building and 3 vehicles with at least one vehicle staffed at all times, 24/7. By 2007, York Volunteer Ambulance officially became York Ambulance Association, Inc., a non-profit organization with no volunteers. In 2014, York Ambulance became a regional ambulance service, adding South Berwick and Rollinsford, NH to areas being covered. Last year, Mary stepped See ANDREWS page 14...

Random Acts of Kindness Blossom at WJHS WELLS Before the holiday recess in December, a wave of kindness began spreading amongst students and staff at Wells Junior High School. It originated with Ed Tech Jacqui Myers and Special Ed teacher Lauren Rivera brainstorming ways to get their Bridges students interacting and communicating more with other students throughout the school. They decided on a project for their students that would include random acts of kindness. “It started because of the holidays and we wanted something more for the kids,” reflected Rivera about the kindness initiative. “We get so contained in

our room and we really wanted to build that community connection and understand that

things like this can spread and be good.” The two began by having their kids make snowflake decorations and cookies to be discovered at random locations in the school. There were also certificates left around for teachers to discover with wording such as, “You’ve been selected for a random act of kindness.” The teacher certificates were redeemable for classroom clean-up services including floor sweeping, trash paper shredding and inschool mail delivery. Soon, Myers and Rivera decided to expand their students’ reach by seeking community business support in the form of

gift card or gift certificate donations thus allowing their students to randomly surprise other students and staff with an unexpected gift. By mid-January, eleven area businesses had contributed to what is now called The Bridges Room Random Act of Kindness Project. “That was a big thing they did for us, getting this going,” commented Myers about the support and encouragement from the businesses. “I am truly amazed by how many donations we have received. What a wonderful community we have!” As a result of the kindness See KIND page 2...

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~

Dear Computer Lady, I am using “Outlook for my email and am constantly getting dirty emails in my junk folder which, when I attempt to block them, seem to be coming from my own email address. Would you tell me how I can fix this. I tried blocking them, phishing scams, and just plain deleting them. Nothing works and the number of emails which I receive seem to be increasing! Thank you, Anne Dear Anne, Unfortunately, once your email address gets on those spammers lists, there is no good way to get it off. The fact that they are using your email address as the return address makes it even harder to block

them. You only have a couple of choices, either invest your money and time into an email filtering program, or change your email address. An email filtering program requires that you spend time training the program about which messages you want to see and which are junk mail. Here is a list of the top 10 spam filters: www.toptenreviews.com/software/security/best-spam-filter/. If you do change your email address, I would consider switching to Gmail since they have the best spam filter I have ever used. You can even set Gmail up to retrieve messages from your current email address and the junk will be filtered out before you see it. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady, Is it possible to set a wi-fi default in Win7? I have numerous offline tasks and prefer to keep wi-fi off until I need it. Thanks, Margaret Dear Margaret, There are a couple ways you can stop your computer from automatically connecting to a wireless network. The first time you connect to a wireless network, there is a check box labeled, “Connect automatically. Just remove the check mark from that box and your computer will not automatically connect to that connection until you manually connect it. If you already have connections that automatically connect, you will need to go to your control panel, click on “Network and Internet, then click on “Network and sharing center. You should see your wifi connections listed. Click on the name of each connection to display a dialog box. Click on the “Wireless Properties box, and click to remove the check mark in front of “Connect automatically when this network is in range. Click the “OK button at the bottom of the dialog box, then close the remaining dialog box and the control panel. This will allow you to manually connect when you want to, but leave you unconnected when you first start

your computer. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, After a few minutes of inactivity Windows 10 goes to sleep. Is there a way to adjust something to make it wait at least an hour? John in Georgia Dear John, I feel your frustration! There is nothing worse than having to log back into your computer every time you turn around, or pause for a short break. Here is how to do that in Windows 10 1. Click on the start button, then click on the “Settings gear. 2. Click on the “System icon, then click on “Power & Sleep in the left column. 3. In the right column, you can adjust the time before the screen turns off, and the amount of time before the computer goes to sleep. 4. In Windows 10 you don’t have to use an “OK or “apply button to save your settings, you just have to close the settings window. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady,

I clicked full screen in excel and lost my menu at the top of the screen. How can I get my menu back. (Has fonts, bold, etc.) listed. Please help me. Glennis Dear Glennis, The full screen option does not appear to be included in Excel 2016 (which is my version) so I had to do a little bit of research to answer your question. It appears there are two ways to get out of Full Screen in Excel. First, you should be able to press the “Esc key on your keyboard. An alternate option would be to right-click on your excel spreadsheet, and click “Exit Full Screen in the context menu that appears.,I hope this helps. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? The MGM film was based on the popular, dialogue-rich Broadway hit by George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber, that was originally produced on the stage by Sam H. Harris. The witty romantic comedy is filled with choice lines of dialogue, and revolves around various relationships between the characters. It is a fast-moving narrative with its humor and tragedy, one that offers a great variety of characterizations. “Dinner at Eight combines delightful comedy and simultaneous poignancy, as the dinner hosts and guests unknowingly bring together their various intentions, personal agendas, and devastating problems. The course of the dinner party does not run smooth for the beleaguered host-

ess, and there is an underlying tense awareness that literally anything can happen! The status-conscious but oblivious Millicent Jordan (Billie Burke) is throwing a chic dinner party. She is unaware that her husband (Lionel Barrymore) is suffering from serious health problems plus the realization that his business, which has been hard-hit by the Depression, is about to collapse. Millicent’s shaky but elite guest list includes a wealthy but coarse tycoon Dan Packard (Wallace Beery) and his brassy wife Kitty (Jean Harlow), her husband’s ex-lover and former stage beauty Carlotta Vance (Marie Dressler), and a desperate, washed-up movie star (John Barrymore) who is secretly carrying on an affair with their young See FILM page 11...

Wells Lady Warriors Raise $25,000+ for Cancer Patients at York Hospital YORK While the rest of the country may anticipate March Madness with the excitement of a child on Christmas Eve, it’s all about ‘January Joy’ for York Hospital. For the 9th straight year, York Hospital and their cancer patients were the clear winners of The Wells Lady Warriors’ effective offense, as the team presented them with a $25,000 check at their Shootin’ for a Cure (SFAC) basketball benefit last Saturday evening! On January 19, the Wells High School gym was the place for a cancer survivor to feel supported! This all day event, spearheaded by Coach Don Abbott and a committed SFAC Committee, began with a free throw shoot out, involving 71 girls in grades 5-11, who raised money through pledges, and culminated in an exciting game versus

Those girls who raised at least $250 each – and there were 18 of them, for a total of $4,500 – were recognized as members of the Pink Ribbon Club. A grand prize drawing was also held for girls raising at least $100, and was won by Cali Leighton. She will be enjoying a $500 shopping spree including limousine ride, donated by SIS Bank and Abbott Brothers. A bake sale and raffles donated by the community and other local businesses were also held, adding to the festivities and cause’s bottom line. The money they raised will help support the Hospital’s Living Well With Cancer program that help improve the quality of life of those who have been diagnosed with and are undergoing treatment for cancer at York Hospital. BUSINESS & FINANCE Ready to Move? Right Sizing Your Lifestyle

Making a move after 65years can be a daunting task. The National Association of Realtors says there are over 46 million people 65 or older in this country who will be ready to make a move over the next decade or so. Are you ready? Following is an outline of six easy steps to streamline the process, a blueprint for success! Step #1. If necessary meet with a financial planner to make sure your move makes sense. Will you garner enough money from the sale to cover expenses, bills, mortgages, other debts, buy a new place? Step #2. Speak with an

elder law attorney. Getting your ducks in a row makes it easier further on down the road. Do you have a will? Is there a Power of Attorney needed? Who will be in charge if something happens to you? Step #3. Meet with a realtor who has experience working with Seniors. There are many factors to consider at this stage of life: illness, death, divorce, financial instability. It is important to have a realtor with skills, resources, compassion and know-how to get the job done. Realtors also provide stagers and helpers for packing. Step #4. Use an estate appraiser if necessary to evaluate

your possessions. An estate appraiser will look over collections, art, furniture etc. so you’ll know their value going forward. Step #5. Hire a great home inspector. If you have been in a home for 30 to 40 years or more, there are likely to be some hidden issues. Better to discover them now then wait for a costly repair to appear during the sales process.

Step #6. Interview a good moving company that is sensitive to the needs of seniors. They will provide you with an estimate for your move. This sets the stage to be realistic about what you will keep, give away, or take with you. Some companies help in that process as well. Important to note: doing at least 1 of the items on this list will get you a long way toward

getting started. So take a small step, pick one and then start packing! Submitted by Susan DeQuattro Arrand, Senior Real Estate Specialist, Coldwell Banker Yorke Realty. She is a mother, wife (both husbands have passed), and a nurse. Following Lew’s speech at the reception for Mary, Eric Bakke, current President, read his letter of congratulations which included the appointment of Mary as an Honorary Member of York Ambulance Association. As such, should she desire, she will be able to

Other guests added comments and memory stories. WELLS January adoptions have been wonderful. Our team of “Adoption Warriors has been busy driving to ME, NH and MA homes to meet potential adoptees. Those who adopt from Safe Haven are grateful for the care we take with each adoption. Our home visits are brief but educational. Our volunteers offer proven tips to optimize the arrival of their new family member, to ensure a happy beginning and a successful adoption. Once the home is set up and ready, in most cases we also deliver the kitty. This kind of transition is appreciated by the kitties as well, because they know the volunteers and it helps to calmly adapt to this big change. Two beautiful sisters who deserve a loving home are Roki

and Rhianna. Born to a feral barn kitty, they have calmed in Safe Haven loving care, and are now ready to be placed. First Rhianna allowed volunteers to touch and pet her, then started to rub gently against their legs. It’s thrilling when a feral breaks through its fear and begins to trust and become attached. Now Roki, the shyer of the two, has started to mirror what her sister Rhianna does. This shows both are receptive to love and gentle handling. To finish blooming, they need to go to a quiet, loving home, with people who will be patient and give them the time to relax and trust and bond. Roki and Rhianna are bonded

and need to be together, therefore, we are waiving one kitty’s adoption fee. Both two year-olds can be adopted for just $95. Looking ahead, Safe Haven has just rescued 11 kitties from Downeast Maine. Each is now in quarantine and receiving their shots, neutering, etc. in preparation for adoption. To help us manage the expense of saving 11 more lives and providing complete medical care, your ongoing support is needed. To make a contribution on behalf of the new 11, just note it on your check or online donation, and one of them will write you a thank-you note and enclose a photo. When you see their faces, you’ll totally understand why we do what we do! Please mail your donations to Safe Haven Humane Society, PO Box 91, Wells, ME 04090 or online at safehavenhumanesociety.org. Our Adoption Center can always use more scoopable cat litter, soft fleece blankets or comforters to keep kitties warm, and Friskies brand canned cat food.

Gull Identification Workshop YORK COUNTY York County Audubon is pleased to present a Gull Identification Workshop led by Derek Lovitch, one of Maine’s premiere birders. This two-part workshop, on Saturday, February 3 (1-4:30 p.m.) and Sunday, February 4 (8 a.m. - 12 noon), will get you started on unraveling the mysteries of gull identification. The Saturday portion will be a “classroom session at Wells Reserve at Laudholm in Wells, while the Sunday portion will be a field session around Portland. Most gulls are not very difficult to tell apart, though adult and juveniles of most species look very different. Gain confidence by identifying the easier plumage’s of our common species, and then tackle the more challenging intermediate plumages and the less-common species. Derek Lovitch is author of “How to Be a Better Birder and “Birdwatching in Maine, a guide to birding that covers the entire state in detail. He is one of the premiere birders in Maine

and beyond, and, with his wife Jeannette, owns and operates Wild Bird Supply in Freeport. Space is limited, and advance registration is required. Register by signing up at yorkcountyaudubon.org. Click on the link under “What’s Coming Up on the right side of that page, then scroll down to find the registration form. The cost for the workshop is $10 per person.

WEST KENNEBUNK Wolfgang may be a big fella (he’s a 90 pound Rottweiler/ Pit Bull mix), but at heart he’s a gentle giant and a lovable goofball of a dog. He loves getting attention from his people and strangers as well. He has lived with dogs in the past, but he prefers the company of smaller dogs. At only 3 1/2 years old, he’s a very energetic dog and would enjoy going for regular walks with his people. He’s a smart fellow and knows sit, shake, down, and roll over. He would love to learn more! Adopters get a discount to take canine training classes at AWS and Wolfgang is hoping his new people will enroll him. He’d be a star student! In fact, speaking of being a star student, Wolfgang has enjoyed hanging out after school with our Humane Action League students. He loves learning alongside the students. Isn’t it time this gentle giant found a home of his own? Learn more about making Wolfgang a member of your family: http://

...JOHNSON from page 19 merly of North Berwick, passed away January 17, 2018 in Durham, NH. He was born March 15, 1936 in Freeport, son of Carroll and Doris (Everett) Johnson. In 1954, Joe enlisted in the U.S. Air Force serving during Viet Nam, and continuing for the next 20 years. While enlisted, he married Judith Roberts, June 28, 1958. After his retirement from the military, Joe and Judy raised their two children in North Berwick. Together they enjoyed motorcycle rides, snowmobiling, dancing and bowling in their local league. He worked for Hussey Seating as an Inventory Control Officer and worked a short time for the North Berwick Elementary School as a custodian. Joe volunteered for the North Berwick Rescue Squad and was a member and Past Master of the Yorkshire Lodge #179, AF & AM. His laughter and warm sense of humor will be forever remembered by all who knew and loved him. After Judy’s death in 1992, Joe met Judith (Lemay) Michaud and married in 1995. They loved traveling and family gatherings and each winter they became snowbirds, seeking the sun in Tampa, FL. He was pre-deceased by his wife of 34 years, Judith (Roberts) Johnson. Surviving are his 2nd wife, Judith (Lemay) Johnson of Dover, NH; son Gregory Johnson and his wife Suzanne of Saco, daughter Diana Plante of Sanford; step-son Ron Michaud

Brewster H. Potter Jr., 61 LEBANON – It is with great sorrow that his family announces the sudden death of Brewster H. Potter, Jr., on Thursday, January 18, 2018. Born on September 10, 1956, in Melrose, MA, he was the son of Brewster and Margaret Potter. He grew up on his family’s dairy farm in Lebanon,

and graduated from Noble High School in 1974. He ran his own plumbing business for many years, serving a wide range of commercial and residential customers. Brewster was there whenever his family, friends, or customers needed him - and not just when their pipes froze. He worked long hours, so he greatly appreciated any time off with family and friends. He loved playing hockey, skiing, fishing, scuba diving, digging for old bottles, wandering in the woods, and swapping stories with his close, extended family and lifelong friends. Brewster inherited the Potters’ practical streak, as well as their artistic talent; for example, he created unique backdrops for his daughter’s wedding in October. Brewster and his wife Joanne were married in 1988, also in October. They met as children and, over time, it became apparent they were kindred spirits. Their home was always a center of activities for their family and friends. Brewster was a unique mix of serious ideas and witty humor, which endeared him to so many. He cared deeply about his wide social circle and his community. He was predeceased by his parents, and is survived by his wife, Joanne; his daughter and son-inlaw, Charlotte and Patrick Buonano of Lebanon; his son, Gordon of Lebanon; his brother, David, of Raymond, NH; his sister and brother-in-law, Sarah Jane Potter and Kevin Blood, of North Berwick; his sister and brother-inlaw, Lois and Dan Bennett, of

Eliot; as well as his aunts and cousins, and the Stuart family. Services will be held on Saturday, January 27, 1, p.m., at the Springvale First Baptist Church, 429 Main St, Springvale. A reception will follow at the Sanford Elks Club, 7 Elm St, Sanford, from 2 to 5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributing to the Elks Maine Children’s Cancer Fund (www. elks.org), or the Grahamtastic Connection in Sanford (www. grahamtastic.org).

Fenster: New Sea Dogs Manager PORTLAND The Boston Red Sox have named Darren Fenster the manager of the Portland Sea Dogs. Fenster replaces Carlos Febles, who was promoted to the Red Sox as their third-base coach. In addition, Paul Abbott replaces Kevin Walker as the team’s pitching coach. Walker spent three years and Portland and joins Triple-A Pawtucket as their pitching coach. Lee May Jr. (hitting coach), Scott Gallon (trainer) and Chris Messina (strength & conditioning coach) all return to the coaching staff. Fenster, 39, led the Greenville Drive (South Atlantic League) to their first championship in team history in 2017. The Drive went 79-60 and defeated Kannapolis 3 games to 1, capturing the South Atlantic League crown. Following the season, Fenster led the Peoria Javenlinas to the Arizona Fall League Championship. Born in Edison, New Jersey, Fenster was a three-time AllAmerican shortstop at Rutgers University. He was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 12th round of the 2000 MLB Draft and appeared in 438 minor league games, reaching Double-A Wichita in 2003-04. Fenster began his minor league managing career in 2013 with the Gulf Coast Red Sox and spent the last four seasons with Low-A Greenville. For his career, Fenster is 316-301 (.512)

as a manager, and finished over .500 in three straight years with Greenville. Abbott begins his first season as Sea Dogs pitching coach after spending the previous three seasons with the Salem Red Sox. He began his career as a minor league pitching coach with the Lowell Spinners from 2011-12 and spent two seasons with the Greenville Drive (2013-14). The California native pitched in the Major Leagues from 1990-93 and 1998-2004 with the Minnesota Twins (199092), Cleveland Indians (1993), Seattle Mariners (1998-2002), Kansas City Royals (2003), Tampa Bay Devil Rays (2004) and Philadelphia Phillies (2004). May Jr. begins his second season in Portland and his third in the Red Sox system. May spent the 2016 season as Greenville’s (Red Sox Low-A affiliate) hitting coach. He previously served as minor league hitting coordinator in the Mariners organization from 2011-15. Lee played eight minor league seasons from 198693. He also coached in the Mets (1999) and Indians (2004-11) organizations. Lee is the son of former Major Leaguer Lee May and nephew of Carlos May. Gallon begins his second season as Sea Dogs Head Athletic Trainer and his fourth in the Red Sox system. Messina enters his third season as the team’s Strength and Conditioning Coach. The Sea Dogs open the 2018 season on Thursday, April 5 in Binghamton, NY. The home opener is scheduled for Friday, April 13 at 6 p.m. against the Binghamton Rumble Ponies

SPORTS 2018 Special Olympics Maine Winter Games STATEWIDE In 1969, Special Olympics Maine held the worlds very first Special Olympics Winter Games. It all began on a small hill in Gorham, with only a handful of people. Today, in 2018 Special Olympics Maine will host 400 athletes at Sugarloaf USA for the 49th annual Special Olympics Maine Winter Games. The events will begin on January 28, Sunday evening with one of Maine’s largest community suppers. Citizens of Carrabassett and surrounding areas will play host to the athletes by bringing in casseroles and desserts and serving over 800 people. The evening activities kick off with outdoor skating and hot chocolate, a sing-a-long

and karaoke. The competition will be underway bright and early on Monday morning, and Opening Ceremonies featuring our parade of athletes, will begin at Noon sharp. That evening athletes will be treated to a torchlight parade, fireworks and victory dance. En-route to Sugarloaf, Special Olympic teams will have the opportunity to take a break and stretch their legs at a rest stop courtesy of the Roderick-Crosby Post and Auxiliary #28 of Farmington. Sandwiches, chips, hot chocolate and cookies will be provided to the athletes from 12-3 p.m. During the three day event athletes will compete in Nordic skiing, Alpine skiing, Snowshoe,

As part of the annual scarf campaign, every athlete and coach will be receiving a warm hand knit hat and/or scarf. Scarves and hats have been donated from people not only across the state of Maine but

Event Director Zach Schmesser said. “As we started to think about where we wanted to go next year, northern Maine – and specifically Aroostook County – really stood out for us. Geographically, Aroostook County is the largest county east of the Mississippi, and there’s so much about northern Maine that we’d like to showcase for our riders, most of whom come from out of state. It’s a very special place. BikeMaine, a fully supported, week-long bicycle tour that takes place in mid-September, is produced by the Bicycle Coalition of Maine with presenting sponsorship from Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Maine. WHS Color Guard Participates in Halftime Show

Samantha Chase (left) with Bailey Smith. Chase is the first student to get accepted to represent Wells High School at the Citrus Bowl.

Chase was encouraged to audition for this show by her color guard coach of almost 6 years since junior high days, Bailey Smith who noted that Chase was the only color guard from Maine. “I was pretty much the only one from the northeast, added Chase. “A lot of the girls were from Texas or the southern states. “I just am really proud of her, said Smith. “She is the first Wells student to get accepted into

WELLS On New Year’s Day 2018, Wells High School senior Samantha Chase found herself in what must have been a surreal, yet certainly memorable place and time, performing as a color guard before thousands in the All American Halftime Show™ in the Citrus Bowl at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, FL. This show is composed of a large band, color guards, dancers and cheerleaders from other parts of the country. “It was incredible. I’ve never performed before for such a big crowd,â€? said Chase who auditioned to be a color guard for this annual college football event. “And it was such an adrenaline rush that by the time it was over, I was almost sad. I just wanted to repeat it all over again.â€?

this program. I couldn’t have chosen anyone better to represent us. Smith says that next year she is definitely going to pick another of her color guard students to audition for the half time show at the Citrus Bowl. Along with attending the big game, Samantha Chase was able to get in some sightseeing and visits to Disney WorldŽ and Universal Orlando Resort™ with her parents who accompanied her to Florida as chaperones. This year’s Citrus Bowl featured Notre Dame (21) versus LSU (17). The game drew over 57,700 spectators. On Thanksgiving, three other WHS color guard members, Annabelle Breton, Mallory Cashman, and Lilly Hendry, marched in the 2017 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade as members of Macy’s Great American Marching Band. This was the fourth year that members of the WHS Color Guard team have performed in the Macy’s parade.

region of the state each year. Last year’s ride, The Pathway to the Peaks, ran from September 9-16, and visited Skowhegan, Pittsfield, Kingfield, Rangeley (two days), Hartford, and Farmington. The 2018 event will be the sixth annual BikeMaine. The specific towns that BikeMaine 2018 will visit will be announced in February at the Coalition’s annual Kick-off Party, which signals the start of Maine’s cycling season. For the last two years, BikeMaine participation has been capped at 400 riders. This year, though, the number of riders will increase to 450, Schmesser said. In its five-year history, BikeMaine has become an engine of economic impact, bringing a total of $1.7 million in spend-

ing to the communities it visits. Economic impact data for BikeMaine 2017 is not yet available, but it’s expected to be in line with previous years. BikeMaine 2016, which travelled through Downeast Maine, contributed $626,000 in total spending. “BikeMaine draws riders from 37 states and Canadian provinces, and from all over the world, Schmesser said, “and every year it sells out earlier. We could almost certainly grow more quickly, but we want to be careful that we don’t get too big, too fast. As bicycle tourism continues to see enormous growth, BikeMaine is an effective way to showcase Maine as a bicycle tourism destination and, at the same time, make Maine better for bicycling. For additional information on the BikeMaine 2018, visit the BikeMaine website at: ride.bikemaine.org.
