Kennebunk Celebrates WinterFest Next Weekend KENNEBUNK The town of Kennebunk will be celebrating WinterFest this year on February 4. Activities include free horse drawn wagon rides, skating at Waterhouse Center with Kennebunk High School ice hockey players, fire baton twirling and a special figure skating performance by Kennebunk High senior, and Festival Committee member, Samantha Abelson. This year Samantha competed at the New England Re-

gional Figure Skating Championship held in Burlington, Vermont skating at the Senior

Ladies level. “I am excited to be participating at Kennebunk’s WinterFest. I love skating at the Waterhouse Center says Sam. She will be skating to “The Prayer by Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli. The Soup Contest is back again for the 8th year but this year the Committee retired the trophy that has been won several times by Chef Rich Lemoine of The Village Tavern. Instead they have invited Chef Lemoine, along with Chefs Brian

and Shanna O’Hea of Academe at the Kennebunk Inn, to be judges for the new Chef’s Choice category. There will still be a People’s Choice and the category Kid’s Choice has also been added. All categories are blind tastings so the people will not know which restaurant they are voting for. The event is $5 per person, $15 per family, and children under 5 are free. The day starts at the Kennebunk Free Library where the Cabin Fever Book Sale and free

Bird Feeder Craft Project will be held from 8:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. Stop by Waterhouse Center for the activities there including the Name the Snowman suggestion box. The Snowman is the new mascot of WinterFest. A free bean supper will be offered at 4 p.m. The evening wraps up at 7 p.m. with the Annual Alumni Variety Show at Town hall. For more information and a complete listing of events, times and locations: festivals@kennebunkmaine.us.

do some serious ‘weeding out’ of their closets. “It’s a clothing drive, except it’s more than just clothing, it’s any textiles, commented school volunteer Ashley Breton before the first Weed-Out in 2016, a multi-community effort that generated 10 tons of clothing, and related items raising almost $4,000 for a very grateful Winter Guard team at WHS. This year’s Weed-Out is to help the WHS Music Department raise a portion of the $38,000 needed to take school band and choral members to Williamsburg for “Music in the Parks this spring.

The following is a list of what can be accepted for the drive: clothing (even torn and stained clothing plus clean rags), clothing accessories, linens, towels, bedding, (sheets, blankets, quilts, comforters), curtains, drapes, shoes (even single shoes), purses, fabrics, uniforms, costumes, chair covers, slip covers, handbags, and backpacks. If you have any of these items and would like to donate them, please bag them up in new garbage bags and deposit See WEED-OUT page 5...

Marya Danihel: Pleasures of the Parlor

YORK On February 1 at 6 p.m., Old York Historical Society will present “Pleasures of the Parlor, a one-hour lecture/concert by mezzo-soprano Marya Danihel that vividly portrays home musicmaking in Victorian America. The program will be held at the Parsons Center, 3 Lindsay Road, York, and will be followed by a

hearty supper of soup, bread, and homemade cookies in historic Jefferds Tavern. Danihel illustrates her performance with live singing, visual images, and excerpts from the unpublished memoir of Sarah Goodwin, wife of New Hampshire’s Civil War governor. “These charming songs reveal much about the inner lives of our

Victorian forbears while reflecting developments in the culture at large: the waning influence of England, the influx of immigrants, and the growth of social movements such as temperance and abolition, says Danihel. A graduate of the University of New Hampshire and Smith College, Danihel began her performing career in Boston and came to specialize in lecture-concerts on historic popular music. In addition, she has sung with

many professional music and theatre organizations. She is a frequent soloist with Portsmouth Pro Musica, and also the founder and artistic director of Vintage Voices, a vocal trio that performs music ranging from parlor songs to light opera (www.vinvoices. com). Parsons Center/Jefferds Tavern is located at 3 Lindsay Road in York. Tickets are $22 per person or $18 for museum members. Tickets should be purchased in advance at www.oldyork.org or by calling 207-363-1756.

~ News ~ Students and Teacher Witness History as it Unfolds WELLS On January 20, millions of people in the U.S. watched television to see Republican Donald J. Trump become the 45th president of the United States, this following a seemingly long and divisive presidential election campaign. The Nielsen ratings service – not counting Internet viewing – indicated that the live U.S. television audience for the inauguration reached 30.6 million. Among those watching at noon were many school students across the country including the 7th grade class at Wells Junior High School viewing the event from four different classrooms. In the room of Social Studies teacher Bruce Peloquin students observed the proceedings on a Smartboard as the onceevery-four-year event unfolded. Peloquin’s 24 students sat silently, glued to the big screen as they took in the historic scenes including the administering of the oath of office by Chief Justice Roberts, the 21-gun salute and the inaugural address. Soon after it was time to move on to the next class. “I liked seeing history being made as the president took the oath of office. I know not all schools had a chance to watch, commented 7th grade student Colby Bolduc. "The ceremony that occurred today was not a red nor blue ceremony, commented Peloquin. “It was not a Republican nor Democrat ceremony. It was truly an American ceremony showing the peaceful exchange of power. It is important for our

students to learn that even during contentious times, we are a government of laws, not of people. Peloquin continued, “Those laws pass peacefully from one president to another. A pretty remarkable event when you think about it. We look to the Constitu-

tion of our country to assure our students that the first three words, 'We the People' affirms that the government of the United States exists to serve its citizens, and its citizens must live up to the hope and idealism those words offer all Americans."

Resource Recovery Stickers Clarified

Like many picturesque old port towns, it grapples with very real, modern issues. Exchange Street zeroes in on hot summer day at the intersection of Exchange and Middle Streets. Kennebunk Author Shares Story of Survival in New Memoir KENNEBUNK Writer and artist Steve Hrehovcik had big Broadway dreams – but life had other surprising plans for him. Hrehovcik will share how patience, pluck, and persistence made him an expert on survival, and opened up unexpected career paths for him, when he reads from his memoir, "Rebel Without a Clue", at Kennebunk Free Library on Wednesday, February 1 at 6 p.m. Hrehovcik caught the acting bug early in life and it wasn’t long before he began pursuing a theatrical career. He could envision his name in lights on the marquee and was convinced, despite obstacles, setbacks, and diversions that his big break was on the horizon. "Rebel Without a Clue" dramatizes how Hrehovcik persevered through it all – and in the end, achieved a few surprising triumphs, most importantly, a marriage of 51 years, three remarkable children, and a wonderful grandson. Written in a humorous, confes-

sional style, "Rebel Without a Clue" includes Hrehovcik’s own original cartoons at the end of each chapter. During the presentation, Hrehovcik will also share tips on creating and publishing ebooks. "Rebel Without a Clue" is available through the Kennebunk Free Library’s digital collection on MaineInfoNet. Library patrons can access MaineInfoNet through Overdrive, available See REBEL page 12...

York Hospital Introduces Virtual Care - Telemedicine for Maine YORK York Hospital is pleased to be the first hospital in Maine to introduce Virtual Care – a service that connects patients with urgent care providers through a phone, tablet

or computer using the latest video-conferencing tools to deliver real-time care and consultation. A virtual visit is a way to have a visit with a healthcare provider without having to go

to an office, clinic, or hospital. Patients can be seen by a provider through a video conference, using a smartphone, tablet, or on your computer with a webcam. Patients see providers online for a range of issues, from minor illnesses and injuries, symptoms from a chronic condition and even general health and wellness concerns. Virtual visits allow for reliable and convenient visits with trained and certified providers. The Virtual Care service at York Hospital is managed by urgent care experts Erich Fogg, PA and Lead Clinician of York Hospital Walk-In Care;

Dr. Robert Hulefeld, Chief of Emergency Care at York Hospital, Jud Knox, York Hospital CEO and Karen Kautz, Emergency Care Coordinator. Seeing an online provider is advantageous for people who aren’t able to drive into a doctor’s office or urgent care clinic, aren’t able to get an appointment with their doctor, would rather pay a $49 flat rate instead of a deductible, do not have insurance, or are traveling or new to the area. The virtual platform is accessed by visiting yorkhospital.com/virtualcare, click “get started and then follow the registration steps within SnapMD, the telemedicine platform. Patients create their patient account and will be able to pay online for their visit. The service is staffed by York Hospital walk-in providers and is available 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Once you’re connected through the telemedicine “Virtual Care platform, your provider can review medical information you share with them, answer your questions

and at their discretion, diagnose, treat and even prescribe medication. If you receive a prescription, your provider will send it straight to your local pharmacy. Patients can access the service anywhere in the state of Maine. York Hospital Virtual Care is a private, secure, HIPAA-compliant tool that allows patients to safely and confidentially consult with a provider online. Virtual Care is not for medical emergencies. Patients should always call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room when they are experiencing any of the following emergency medical problems: chest pain or pressure, uncontrolled bleeding, sudden or severe pain, coughing/vomiting blood, difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, sudden dizziness, weakness, change in vision, slurred speech, numbness, or other neurological changes, severe or persistent vomiting or diarrhea, changes in mental status, such as confusion, assault, physical or sexual abuse, or child abuse. Health & Fitness Straightening Out 4 Myths about Adults and Braces Country music fans noticed something different about Faith Hill’s smile a few years back when she showed up for the Country Music awards. The popular singer wore braces, adding her name to the growing number of adults who decided to straighten their teeth through the traditional “mouth hardware usually associated with children and teenagers. There may be a good reason behind the trend. “A smile plays a critical role in how we feel about ourselves and how others see us, says Dr. Leslie Pitner, an orthodontist and author of “Improve Your Smile, Transform Your Life: A Life-Changing Guide to Orthodontics for Adults. “When people have an extreme overbite, crooked teeth or some other problem with their teeth, they hide their smiles. I’ve had patients who literally have forgotten how to smile after years of trying to conceal unattractive teeth. The result, Pitner says, is they can be seen as less friendly and less approachable. Meanwhile, research shows that smiling can have an impact on numerous aspects of a person’s life, including their mood and how well they handle stress. But Pitner says adults whose teeth could benefit from

braces often don’t think about that option. Even when they do, they are discouraged from following through because of dubious information that they have come to regard as fact. A few of the myths that cause many adults to hesitate include: • Braces are just for kids. That’s simply not true, and hasn’t been for awhile, Pitner says. About 27 percent of people seeking orthodontic treatment in the United States and Canada are adults and the number has been growing, according to a study by the American Association of Orthodontists. • A referral is needed. While a dentist can refer a patient to an orthodontist, it isn’t a necessity, Pitner says. Often, dentists don’t bother to suggest an orthodontist to adults because they assume their patients don’t want or need braces. “We’ve also been conditioned by the medical system to assume we need a referral to see a specialist,â€? she says. “That’s not so for orthodontics. You can make the decision yourself and it won’t affect your coverage if you have insurance.â€? • Braces need to be worn for years. Many patients tend to overestimate how long they will wear braces. “It varies based on how complicated a particular situation is, but usually people See BRACES page 29...

Tuesday saw petroleum futures rise following remarks by Saudi Arabia’s Energy Minister Khalid al-Falih, who said that Saudi Arabia would adhere to the output agreement. He also is confident that the agreed upon production cuts would rebalance the market. Under last fall’s arrangement, OPEC, Russia and other non-cartel members pledged to cut oil output by nearly 1.8 million barrels per day for six months. Energy Minister Falih went on to say that if all countries continued to abide by the OPEC agreement the market would be rebalanced and it would not be necessary to further limit production beyond the six-month agreement. BUSINESS & FINANCE Steer Clear of Student Loan Scammers

With the U.S. Department of Education reporting that more than 40 percent of all borrowers are late or in default, it’s no wonder fake or unethical student debt relief companies are popping up everywhere. “Borrowers are more stressed than ever before about repaying their loans, said Sarah Hamilton, student loan supervisor for Take Charge America, a national nonprofit credit counseling and student loan counseling agency. “Scammers prey on their anxiety, promising to clear their debt for steep fees. Their best bet is to work directly with their student loan servicer or a nonprofit counselor to identify the best repayment options. To help sort out the confusion, Hamilton offers signs of potential repayment scams: Excessive Fees: Many scammers promise lower rates or debt elimination in exchange for hefty fees ranging from $600 to $1,200. If you have federal student loans (which account for the vast majority of student loans), you can manage the repayment process yourself for free at studentloans.gov. Or, if you want objective, one-on-one assistance navigating the system and working with loan servicers, you can seek guidance from a nonprofit student loan counseling agency for half the rate, and a much more comprehensive service. High-Pressure Tactics: Scammers may pressure you with “limited-time or “exclu-

sive offers. Often, these companies put you into loan deferment or forbearance, which seems to solve the problem for the short term but doesn’t address the root issue. When it comes to student loan repayment, there aren’t any special deals. Instant Forgiveness: A promise of instant loan forgiveness or “Obama forgiveness is irresistible. Scammers may ask for your private data and charge a fee, which seems a small price to pay to wipe out debt. In reality, instant forgiveness doesn’t exist, and any promises should serve as red flags. In very rare cases some borrowers with permanent disability can obtain forgiveness, but that involves detailed monitoring and can only be granted directly through the Department of Education. Forgiveness programs for public service employees, nonprofit workers and teachers are available, yet they require 5 to 10 years of service within the industry. Moreover, most for-profit organizations don’t even bring up legitimate forgiveness programs because they can’t turn a quick profit. Power of Attorney: Scammers may tell you they require power of attorney to reduce your debt, which enables them to alter your student loans without your consent. If authorization falls in the wrong hands, it could cause irreversible damage. Unsolicited Assistance: If you receive cold calls from socalled relief companies, steer clear. Your student loan servicer will not contact you in an unsolicited manner, nor will a non-

profit counseling agency. Credibility: Fly-by-night companies will not be listed with the Better Business Bureau or other services assessing the credibility of an organization. If you are considering assistance from a third party, verify with the BBB first at bbb.org. Borrowers seeking more information about student loan repayment options can visit Take Charge America at studentloans. takechargeamerica.org or call 877-784-2008. Dear Computer Lady, Do you have knowledge of any open source office products for the iPad or iPhone? I want to read my files, or possibly edit them by adding information to an excel spread sheet that I keep on my Dell PC. Thanks, Judi Dear Judi, You can actually get Microsoft Office for your iPad and iPhone free of charge. Go to the app store and search for either Word or Excel. Once you have installed the apps on your phone or tablet, there are three levels of access the programs. You can simply use the apps to view your documents. On any iPhone or iPad except the iPad Pro, you can use the core Office experience, including viewing, creating and editing documents for free. All you need to do is login

Dear Computer Lady, I am currently using an HP Pavilion 6857 (Windows Vista) that I purchased from COSTCO in 2009. I still use Quicken, Microsoft Works and Hallmark programs. My grandson keeps telling me to upgrade to a Mac since it is virus free and much more user friendly. My printer and label maker are compatible with my PC. Would I have to buy new printers for the new Mac? The Macs are rather expensive and I hate to invest, then find out

Dear Joan, When you paste a picture into your word processing document, you should be able to easily resize it before sending it to the printer. These directions should get you started. 1. Open your word processing program and paste a picture into the empty document. 2. Once you image is in your document, click once on the image. An outline should appear around your image. 3. Each corner of the box around your image will have a small square or circle. Hover your mouse cursor over one of those corners and it will turn into a diagonal double arrow. 4. When you get that diagonal arrow hold down your left mouse button and drag the corner to make the picture larger. You can use the same method to make it smaller. 5. When the image is the size you want, you can go ahead and print your picture. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Elizabeth has answered thousands of computer questions over the years. Dear Daria, There are actually several things for you to consider before switching from a PC to a Mac. First, Macs are not virus free. There are fewer viruses written for Macs than for PCs, but I know of several instances where Mac computers have recently become infected. Next, take a look at the programs you are running on your current computer. Microsoft Works will not run on a Mac or a PC since Microsoft has discontinued it. It looks like there are Quicken and Hallmark Card Studio programs available for the Mac. You will have to purchase those programs. As for the printer and label maker, you will have to check the manufacturer’s website to see not only if they have Mac software available, but to also see if there is Windows 10 software. You might have to replace the printer and label maker no matter what kind of computer you buy. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Is there a good freeware clipboard program to use with Win 8? The windows clipboard only holds 1 but I like to go back a couple of clips to use it again. Thanks, Red

their size to use them for applique work. Is it possible to increase the size of the picture when sending it to the printer? Thanks for any help you can offer, Joan

every day in my work, so I know exactly what you are looking for. With a little bit of research, I was able to find two freeware programs. I have not used either of them, so download at your own risk. The first one is a program called Ditto. You can find it at: ditto-cp.sourceforge.net. The second is Yankee-Clipper. I have heard about this one in the past, but again, I have not used it. You can check it out at your own risk at: www.intelexual.com/ products/yc3/. The program that I use is Clipmate at: www. thornsoft.com/ I have been using ClipMate for longer than I can remember, and at $34.95, it has been a bargain for me. I use it to write this newsletter, to save collections of code when creating websites and to add my info at the bottom of every post on my blog. In addition to saving clips, I use it to remove line breaks, add line breaks in the right spots, remove capitol letters, add them back in the right spot, and even spell-check my writing. Clipmate also allows me to copy multiple items one after the other, then either combine them into 1 clip, or paste then in new locations in the same or reverse order that I copied them in. Elizabeth

that I have to buy all new printers. Daria
