Canvasworks, Inc. Wins Award for Work on Spirit of Massachusetts
The design team from Canvasworks, Inc. in Kennebunk holds their first place Award of Excellence plaque from the Marine Fabricators Association (MFA) presented recently for their work on the Spirit of Massachusetts tall ship, located in the Kennebunk River. By Nancye Tuttle, Staff Writer YORK COUNTY – Steve Eberle felt like he’d won Megabucks when he and his Canvasworks, Inc. team won the Award of Excellence — first prize — in the ‘Tops and Enclosures 30’ and Over’ division for their work on the Spirit of Massachusetts tall ship at the Marine Fabricators Association (MFA) convention in Clearwater Beach, Florida, January 14-16. “This award is judged by the top master marine fabric crafts-
men in the world, said Eberle, owner and designer at Kennebunk-based Canvasworks, Inc. for 34 years. “We have taken several seconds and thirds over the years, but never first prize. Eberle, attending the convention with his wife Patti, was both thrilled and surprised. “Before the awards banquet, as we looked at photos on display of all the entries, from places like Australia, England and Germany, I told her, ‘it will be like winning Megabucks to win first
place,’ he recalled. “When the three winning entries were flashed on the huge screen and we were named first, from hundreds of entries, I was speechless. It’s really the best of the best and worth everything in the world to us. Dwight Raymond, owner of the Spirit of Massachusetts, a 125-foot long schooner built in the early 1980s at Charlestown Navy Yard, plans to open it in early See EBERLE page 4...

working to represent individual Mainers who have problems with the federal government. Last week he watched a 93-year old Maine veteran receive the medals he had won in WWII. The former soldier’s paperwork had been lost in the Pentagon and King was able to right the situation. “This kind of work is rarely reported on. “It’s not news if there is no fight (between parties).â€? Commenting about partisanship, King said that he and his wife host dinners every week at their small home in Washington to encourage socializing between senators. They make sure they include people of both parties and a variety of points of view. “You can’t hate someone if you know their kids’ names.â€? King was asked what he saw as the biggest issues confronting us, domestically and in foreign affairs. He responded that domestically the failure to deal with the deficit was key. In terms of foreign affairs he cited dealing with ISIS, Al Qaeda and jihad as the most important issues. One student wondered if King favored free college. King answered, “In 1910 free high school was a radical idea. We do need to be thinking about free college‌When I was governor (of Maine) I wanted every student to be able to drive 30 minutes to a community college that he or she can attend for the price of a used car.â€? One of King’s favorite issues is alternative energy. He pointed out that solar and wind energy get cheaper every year. He would like to see the federal government do all it can to expand the use of alternatives to fossil fuels. King carries a card See KING page 5...

King pointed out that Maine has one of the highest percentages of gun ownership in the country and yet one of the lowest levels of crime. “It’s not one size fits all. What works in Maine might not work in Chicago. ~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Marshwood Middle School Performs Musical “Learning to Flyâ€? SOUTH BERWICK Though it may be cold and snowy outside in Eliot , adventures of fairy tale characters are warming the hearts of Marshwood Middle School students as they prepare for this year's musical, "Learning to Fly". This enchanting show tells the story of Peter Pan and his journey to uncover his true identity, his destiny, and his shadow. Directed and choreographed by Alden Caple, with book, music and lyrics by Miles Burns, "Learning to Fly" is based on the stories of J.M. Barry and
was originally conceived & performed at Seacoast Repertory Theatre in Portsmouth, NH. "Learning to Fly" is about trying to grow up in an impossible place, learning to grow from loss, and the power of a happy thought," says Burns. "I admire these kids' abilities to try something new and embrace the unknown." This unique musical fairy tale shares the escapades of Captain Hook, Tiger Lily, The Lost Boys, Mermaids, Fairies, and even a certain crocodile, as they learn to navigate the sensi-
tive issues of growing up, being a mother, experiencing loss, and fighting for the people in your life that are worth fighting for. "This show is storytelling in its purest form. We get to explore a re-imagined history of some of the most magical characters from our own childhoods," shares Caple. "The cast is full of some of the most talented, honest, thoughtful, and daring young actors I have gotten to work with." This is the third year Caple and Burns have directed Marshwood Middle School's musical,
and the sixth year Caple has worked on the MMS show. Both men also work at Seacoast Repertory Theatre, Burns as Artistic Director, and Caple as Youth
Production Manager, in addition to working with students at Portsmouth Academy of Per-

Rapt in Winter:
Bob Halperin’s guitar work is nimble and assured, subtle but also with the right amount of power. You can hear trace influences of greats such as Robert Johnson, Son House and others, but the playing here is beyond imitation. Halperin has developed a singular voice on the instrument. The RMS Five is comprised of five of the driving forces behind New England’s highly acclaimed Rock My Soul Gospel Choir: Dawn Boyer, Jody Dugrenier, Brett Hartenbach, Terry Olson, and Tina Weinberger. Frequently accompanying the group are renowned Seacoast NH musicians Bob Halperin on slide/acoustic guitar and Mike Effenberger on keyboards. According to Ed Gardner, 2015 President of the Maine Association of Realtors, “The annual numbers are very positive for the real estate market in Maine, likely due to continued low interest rates, and confidence in the economy. For the most part, prices were stable and increasing for the year. Some markets are experiencing tight inventory at certain price points and ‘days on market’ has decreased over data
from a year ago. Only Maine’s most rural counties experienced slight sold price declines. Source:

Health & Fitness Did You Know About Stress? Born in 1907, Hungarian physician Hans Selye is credited with coining the medical term “stress” in 1936. While studying medicine at the German Medical School in Prague, Selye, at the ripe old age of 17, observed that patients suffering from various diseases had a tendency to exhibit identical signs and symptoms. According to the American Institute of Stress, Selye tested animals with various physical and emotional stimuli, noting that, regardless of the stimuli, the

animals all exhibited the same pathologic changes, namely enlargement of the adrenals, shrinkage of lymphoid tissue and ulcerations of the stomach. Selye would go on to discover General Adaptation Syndrome, which he described
as the body’s response to the demands placed on it. That syndrome noted how stressful situations induced involuntary hormonal responses that
contributed to a host of negative side effects, including high blood pressure and arteriosclerosis, that are still associated with stress today.

We Need to Stretch! Readings in Person or by Phone. According to modern exercise science, most of us should be spending more time stretching. Sure we all could use more exercise, but stretching is equally important. In fact, we should be spending as much time stretching, as we do exercising. What about those of us who don't have a regular exercise routine? For many reasons...either due to injury, health issues or lack of motivation, we may not have any specific 'exercises' we're doing each day. However, every time we stand, walk, bend over, climb stairs, reach into a closet, we are using the same set of muscles again and again. Eventually, these muscles become fatigued or tight, and that is the best reason to stretch. While strength training is important, if we don't stretch our overused muscles, strengthening is more of a challenge. And this can create more muscle imbalance along the way. Several popular exercise programs today utilize stretching and strengthening. Some Yoga styles offer deep stretching. Pilates exercises are designed to provide both strengthening and stretching in every exercise taught, from the head down to the feet. Submitted by Pilates instructor, Robin Stickney.

Six Important Things Parents Should Know About Concussions Kids aren't exactly strangers to concussions. But that
doesn't mean head injuries should be taken lightly. Accord-
ing to Dr. Adam Breiner, science is revealing more and more longterm adverse effects. Here, he shares six things every parent should know about concussions. Will Smith's latest sports drama, “Concussion, is generating a lot of buzz about head injuries. The film's leading man is not the only reason concussions have been in the news lately, either. The more scientists learn about concussions or traumatic brain injury (TBI), says Adam
Breiner, ND, the more adverse long-term effects they discover. Just last year, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) issued new recommendations to improve player safety in youth football, including zero tolerance for illegal headfirst hits and expanding non-tackling leagues. And according to the CDC, the overall number of children and teens diagnosed with concussions or TBI is on the rise. Dr. Breiner shares six things parents, teachers, and coaches need to know about concussions so that they can protect the young people in their care: Concussions and TBI do real damage to the brain. Concussions and TBI occur when the brain suddenly shifts within the skull—usually as the result of a sudden blow, jolt, or change of direction (e.g., whiplash). A football tackle, being hit with a baseball or softball, heading a soccer ball, falling off a bike, and being in an automobile accident are just a few of the scenarios that can result in TBI. "TBI and concussions are characterized by torn nerve axons, bruising, and inflammation," explains Dr. Breiner. "If not treated properly, this damage can continue to impede brain function, even long after the initial injury." That damage can have long-term effects. Because children's brains are still growing, they are especially vulnerable to concussions. The damage caused by TBI can impair normal devel-

opment. Potential long-term effects of childhood concussions include abnormal brain activity that lasts for years, memory problems, attention deficits, difficulty handling anger, language impairment, personality changes, difficulty making decisions, "foggy" thinking, and more. Multiple concussions are especially dangerous. If a child is concussed a second time while a previous brain injury is still healing, they may experience more serious symptoms, a longer recovery time, and even permanent cognitive and neurological damage. Since TBI is not a visible injury, multiple concussions are a major concern—especially for young athletes. The signs of concussion can range from mild to severe. The immediate effects of a concussion can be subtle or very noticeable. Some of the most common post-concussive symptoms include headache, visual blurring, light sensitivity, difficulty concentrating, dizziness and balance problems, nausea, memory dysfunction, and fatigue. When in doubt— whether you notice symptoms or not—it's always smart to get your child checked out after a blow to the head. The first and best line of defense is prevention. No, you can't raise your child in a bubble, but you can take precautions to lower his risk of becoming concussed. If your child participates in an activity where falls or blows to the head are a possibility, make sure he wears a helmet. "If your child plays a sport and you see unsafe behaviors happening in practices or games, speak up," urges Dr. Breiner. "Remove your child from the team if changes aren't made. While I don't believe that the risk of concussion means that parents should pull their children out of sports, I am a strong advocate of taking all reasonable precautions to keep young athletes safe." The standard wait-andrest advice may not be good enough. If your child suffers from a concussion (or one is suspected), you'll most likely be advised to make sure that she rests physically and mentally for a few days. But don't stop there. According to Dr. Breiner, the biggest mistake most parents and coaches make is assuming that everything is okay when a youngster appears to have returned to normal after See INJURY page 15...

Health & Fitness Teens Learn Healthy Decision-Making through New Program YORK COUNTY In collaboration with York Hospital’s Cottage Program treatment services and Sweetser’s behavioral health services, the Choose To Be Healthy Coalition is coordinating a new program to help youth 13-18 reduce or stop their drug or alcohol use. SIRP (Student Intervention Reintegration Program) is not treatment. It is an education-based class for youth whose substance use has caused problems at home, in the community or at school. The 3 day, 12 hour class will begin February 2-4th and will be provided once a month at two locations in York. Schools, police, juvenile justice officers and parents may refer youth to
SIRP. Youth may also self-refer. SIRP uses an interactive group format that is non-judgmental and empowers youth to make healthy decisions and reduce risks. The program’s approach reduces the typical teen resistance to the life-saving information presented in the program and increases students’ openness to change. • 70 Percent of participating youth said class changed their thinking about how much they should drink or use drugs.
• 77 Percent would recommend the program to a friend. • 92 Percent said the instructor was well-informed and understanding. • 89 Percent said overall the program was very or somewhat helpful. No fee. Donations to cover materials and refreshments accepted. To learn more about SIRP go to http://sirp.adcareme. org/ and contact Cindy Hathaway at the Cottage Program at 351-2118 to refer a youth.

...INJURY from page 14 a few days of downtime. "Remember, damage may be present that you can't see—and the only way to ascertain whether healing is complete is via functional brain imaging and other tests," he says. Fortunately, the more science uncovers about the brain, the better we're able to diagnose concussions and prevent negative long-term effects. "Each brain's cognitive abilities and electrical function is unique— meaning that 'healing' will look different for each person," Dr. Breiner shares. "For this reason, it's highly recommended that children and teens—especially athletes—get baseline tests (including neurocognitive testing and an EEG) before the athletic season begins. Having this baseline data on hand helps doctors evaluate the severity of the injury and determine when it's safe for your child to return to prior activities." Adam Breiner, ND, is the medical director of The NeuroEdge Brain Performance Center, a division of The Breiner Whole-Body Health Center in Fairfield, CT. The Center is one of the only free-standing hyperbaric facilities in the region, focusing on helping patients with neurological conditions. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~
Dear Computer Lady, I have windows 7 home premium. How long will it be before I would have to change it to another version of windows, or could I keep this for a long time? Will Dear Will, According to Microsoft, it will be safe to continue using Windows 7 until January 14, 2020. After that date, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates that can help protect your PC from harmful viruses, spyware and other malicious software that can steal your personal information. If you are running Windows 7 on a computer that is already a couple of years old, by the time 2020 comes, if the computer is still running, it will be 6 or more years old. Since the aver-
age computer currently lasts about 5 years, I would plan on replacing the computer with a new one running Windows 10 at that time. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, On my computer, I used to be able to right-click on things and get a menu that would help me perform certain tasks related to the thing I right-clicked on. Now that I am using a touch screen on my laptop, I can tap instead of click, but how do I right-tap? Thanks, Kris Dear Kris, I am glad to hear that you have learned to right-click on icons to get more options. On your touch screen, you can get the same list of shortcuts by holding your tap for a second or so. Then, when you lift your

finger that same context menu will appear. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady: Do restart and reboot mean the same thing? I see both terms used, but am not sure if there is a difference between them. Thank you for all you do! Mrs H. Dear Mrs. H, Yes, restart and reboot both mean that you shut the computer down, and then start it back up again. Sometimes turning your computer on is referred to as, "Booting" your computer, which is where the term, "reboot" comes from. I'm glad you asked this question! Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I would like to thank you for the service you render to so many people. What a great contribution to others. My question is this: I have Windows 10 and when it get a document in pdf format that I need to input data or edit, how do I do that? Please advise and thank you. sending a PDF document to someone is that anyone can download the free Adobe Acrobat Reader and view your document. However, if you want to edit a PDF document, you need to install a PDF editing program. Adobe is hoping you will purchase their program, Adobe Acrobat, (that is why they give away Adobe Acrobat Reader so freely) but at nearly $500 or $14.99/month it is out of reach for most home users. Another option, would be to use the free, LibreOffice to open and edit your PDF file. You can also use Microsoft Word, but you would have to convert the document to Word format first, make your changes, then export the document back to PDF format. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have got myself into problems by installing programs that are supposed to make my computer operate more efficiently. I completely trust your advice. Is registry reviver by Riversoft a safe and reliable program that will do what it advertises to do? If not what program would you suggest? They also offer a program to keep all my driver updates current. Please Help! Thanks so very much. you are a blessing to so many novice computer learners. Carroll
Dear Carroll, I am not a big fan of programs that claim to make your computer run faster or more efficiently. I am also not a big fan of driver update programs. Most of the time, these programs are just making empty promises so they can sell you their product, and many of them come with toolbars and helpers that slow your computer down even more. Instead of installing this type of program, I would suggest a couple of things. First, check for windows updates and install them every month. Windows updates often include driver updates for your computer. Second, run Disk Cleanup on your computer. This is available in all versions of Windows. Just open Windows Explorer, right click on your hard drive, click “Properties and then click the “Disk Cleanup button. These two features are already on your computer, won’t cost you any money, and won’t slow your computer down. Elizabeth Interested in learning more?
