Canvasworks, Inc. Wins Award for Work on Spirit of Massachusetts

By Nancye Tuttle, Staff Writer YORK COUNTY – Steve Eberle felt like he’d won Megabucks when he and his Canvasworks, Inc. team won the Award of Excellence — first prize — in the ‘Tops and Enclosures 30’ and Over’ division for their work on the Spirit of Massachusetts tall ship at the Marine Fabricators Association (MFA) convention in Clearwater Beach, Florida, January 14-16. “This award is judged by the top master marine fabric crafts-

men in the world,� said Eberle, owner and designer at Kennebunk-based Canvasworks, Inc. for 34 years. “We have taken several seconds and thirds over the years, but never first prize.� Eberle, attending the convention with his wife Patti, was both thrilled and surprised. “Before the awards banquet, as we looked at photos on display of all the entries, from places like Australia, England and Germany, I told her, ‘it will be like winning Megabucks to win first

place,’� he recalled. “When the three winning entries were flashed on the huge screen and we were named first, from hundreds of entries, I was speechless. It’s really the best of the best and worth everything in the world to us.� Dwight Raymond, owner of the Spirit of Massachusetts, a 125-foot long schooner built in the early 1980s at Charlestown Navy Yard, plans to open it in early See EBERLE page 4...
