Michael Fischer Appointed President of YCCC WELLS The Board of Trustees of the Maine Community College System has appointed Michael Fischer, an associate vice president at Great Bay Community College in NH, as the next president of York County Community College. He will begin in March. Fischer has held leadership roles for the last 12 years at Great Bay Community College, most recently as associate vice president of economic and community development, and as interim vice president of student success and enrollment management.

Before that he served as Great Bay’s associate vice president of student affairs and college operations, and director of student life.

“I am honored to be selected as the next president of York County Community College,” Fischer said about his appointment. “The educational profession is one of the greatest and noblest callings because we have the ability to changes lives and shape communities. I look forward to working with the dedicated faculty and staff at YCCC in helping our students learn the skills needed to be successful in work and life.” While at Great Bay Community College, Fischer oversaw the launch of a new Student Suc-

cess Center at the college, and led several initiatives to boost student enrollment. He served as special advisor to the president for the last two years, and led several fundraising campaigns. Previous to his time at Great Bay Community College, Fischer worked at Hesser College in Manchester, NH, for four years, serving as dean of students, and director of athletics. He also served as athletic director and men’s basketball coach at Notre Dame College in Manchester. “I am very pleased to welcome Michael Fischer to this im-

portant role,” Board Chairwoman Jean Ginn Marvin said. “The board sought a leader with the vision and experience to meet the needs of both students and employers and expand the college’s role in the region. Mike’s handson leadership of student and institutional success efforts demonstrates his deep commitment to improving the lives of students through education and training.” Fischer credits his own academic path as the inspiration behind his passion for working See YCCC page 4...

Music Boosters Hold Annual Textile Fundraising Drive

WELLS For the whole month of February, the Music Boosters of Wells High School will hold their fourth annual textile fundraising drive to raise funds for the Boosters and the Epilepsy Foundation of New England. The fundraiser, called a “Winter Weed-Out”, is a great way to make a non-monetary donation to two worthy causes plus accomplish ‘weeding out’ the closets. Over the past four years,

the Boosters have gathered over 75,000 pounds of textiles and raised almost $15,000. The drive has now become a multi-community effort with many looking forward to contributing. The following is a list of what can be accepted for the drive: clothing (gently used or new), clothing accessories (ties, scarves, belts, shoes, boots), linens (towels, bedding, tablecloths), curtains, purses, fabrics, uniforms, costumes,

slipcovers, handbags, and backpacks. Please note that wet items, household items, and books, are not allowed in this textile drive. Please bag the items in new garbage bags and deposit them in the designated blue Epilepsy barrels located at Wells Town Hall, the Wells-Ogunquit CSD Superintendent’s Office, Wells High School, Wells Junior High School, Wells Elementary School, Matt’s Barbershop in Wells, or the office of Prime Storage in Wells, during regular business hours. Please note the hours of operation for each of the above locations and do not leave bags outside any of these donation drop spots. Tax donation receipts and extra bags will be available with the blue barrels. This collection drive also includes a “Stuff-the-BandTruck” event and “Personal

Pick-Up” on February 15 and 22 from 8 a.m. until noon. On those days, the Wells-Ogunquit Music Booster white truck will be parked and ready for donation bags at the Wells Transfer Station. Or, schedule a personal pick-up if one has three or more 30-gallon bags or six or more 13-gallon bags. To schedule a pick-up for either of these days, contact Bill Washburn at 207-468-4162 or email wombwhs@gmail.com. The last day to donate to this textile drive is Friday, February 28.

The new, aggressive incentives are the next step in advancing the Governor’s 100,000 heat pump initiative, which the Governor proposed and signed into law last year, and which establishes the goal of installing 100,000 heat pumps in Maine homes and businesses by 2025. The initiative, which does not use state taxpayer funds, will maintain the state’s trajectory as a national leader in beneficial electrification – replacing high-carbon fossil fuels with cleaner electricity – while lowering heating bills and creating quality jobs. “These new rebates will help make high-performance heat pumps more attainable for more Maine people, and the effects of this initiative will ripple across Maine’s economy,” said Governor Mills. “Not only will it help create good-paying jobs, boost small businesses, and promote workforce training at our community colleges, but it will also help Maine people save money on their heating bills and reduce our reliance on fossil

will be busy scoring donations to benefit those in need through the “Souper” Bowl of Caring. The annual event, to be held this year on Saturday, February 1, and Sunday, February 2, is a weekend of giving and serving during which 100% of the monetary and food donations collected will be given to local charities to help tackle hunger in the community. Maine parishes participating include the Parish of the Ascension of the Lord, Kittery, where high school students will be standing at the exit doors after Masses with soup pots to collect monetary donations and canned goods. The collections are scheduled for all Masses at the three parish churches – St. Raphael Church, Kittery; Our Lady of the Angels Church, South Berwick; and St. Christopher Church, York.

We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

bereaved’s feelings in the patterns of community support which are psychologically beneficial. Flowers, however, express the inexpressible – they are symbolic.

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

WELLS Our existing thrift shop at 1517 Post Road at the Wells Corner for Shopping Plaza has new winter hours. We are closed on Mondays and our hours are shortened to 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday - Sunday. We always welcome quality donations of housewares, costume jewelry, linens, bath towels, and home décor. We will be setting up our second, larger thrift shop in March, so hold on to your larger pieces, like hutches, cupboards, armoires, blanket chests, hat stands, love seats, benches, table and chair sets, wicker furnishings, bulky decorative items. Call 207-229-8314 to discuss donating them to our new shop. Our new shop has more than triple the space, which will give us room to spread out and showcase our inventory, and make shopping less of a tight squeeze for our shoppers! It will remain a treasure hunt of useful and unique items but we will offer antiques and furnishings as well. Our plan is to open our new store on Memorial Day weekend and there is so much to do to be ready. Our current thrift shop will remain at the IGA plaza until further notice, so there will be two locations to shop for a great cause! Our shelter is still closed, but progress is being made and the kitties are all fine and looking forward to being back in business. The photo shows some of the kitties in our Peach Room enjoying a game of ping-pong ball chase. Despite being closed to the public, all our kitties are enjoying a happy life and they

miss seeing all the visitors! Several kitties had ringworm, a fungal infection, and to prevent its spread, we closed our doors. It’s been quite an experience but our top priority is always our kitties and their health. We’re winning the fight, slowly but surely. We can’t wait to reopen. Until then, appointments can be made to see the kitties in the rooms that are not closed. Donations of canned cat food (Friskies is preferred) is urgently needed. Our cupboard is nearly bare. We also need special foods such as Fancy Feast and Sheba, for older kitties and those recovering from dental surgery. An extra-special food can entice a kitty to eat, aids in a quicker recovery. Trash bags, latex and playtex gloves are also needed, because sanitizing is an ongoing task. Because our shelter is closed, please drop off your shelter donations at our IGA plaza thrift store. Thank you all for your ongoing support and love for animals. We are very excited about the year ahead and all the changes coming. We’re recruiting volunteers for the shelter and both thrift shops. Call 207-6461611 for shelter volunteering, and 207-229-8314 for Thrift Shop volunteering. Thanks!

Another Chance Animal Rescue NORTH BERWICK Meet the “Sweet Seven”. At the beginning of last week, we were asked to take in seven cats that belong to a person who was extremely ill and rushed to the hospital where they were admitted. These cats, the “Sweet Seven” came in very frightened, unsure after being suddenly uprooted from their home and human and with uncertain medical histories. We let them adjust for a few days while offering gentle voices and reassurances. Gradually, we have been able to earn a bit of their trust and assess their various medical needs. Many of them are not neutered and all need a vet check including vaccinations, flea treatments, wormings and one has an ulcerated eye which will likely have to be removed. We know the owner loves these cats dearly yet cannot possibly afford the expense at this time. As it will be a while before the owner will be completely well, our goal is to help get these “Sweet Seven”

healthy so they can be reunited with their human who will then have one less thing to worry about during recovery. This is when, as a community based rescue organization, we ask and pray that all of our generous donors pull together and “Help Us Help Them”. We could really use all the financial help we can get to help the “Sweet Seven”. Checks can be mailed to Another Chance Animal Rescue, PO Box 552, North Berwick ME 03906. Or donations can also be sent to us via PayPal at boomeredgewater@gmail.com using the “friends and family” payment option. No donation is too small and all are appreciated! Animal Welfare Society KENNEBUNK “What a lovely thing a rose is!” Sir Arthur Conan Doyle may have penned it first in one of his Sherlock Holmes novels, but it doesn’t take a detective to find out that Rosie here is a very special cat indeed. Like a rose, she is sweet and lovely and delightful but also like a rose, she can be thorny. When she’s uncomfortable or afraid, she doesn’t hesitate to let you know. It’s just her thorns protecting her from what she perceives to be a danger. When she’s comfortable and in her element, she’s a truly delightful companion, a true rose in bloom. In her home, she will be happiest cat napping nearby while you read, watch Netflix or go out your household chores. She’s not a demanding lap cat and will be just as happy as you admire her beauty from afar, like a flower in a garden.

Loud noises, chaos and commotion and a busy homelife bring out her thorny side, so to keep this rose blooming happily, she’d like to have a very calm and quiet home without other pets or children. Perhaps she’ll find a home with a fellow senior, like herself, who enjoys the quiet side of life as well and appreciates beauty in all its forms. by Marcia Oakes Woodbury and Charles Woodbury, Sarah Wyman Whitman, and Celia Thaxter, investigating the influence of Jewett’s surroundings on her writing. In this year’s “classroom in the museum,” Berwick Academy students approached their visit as an “interview” with Jewett, as a historic South Berwick figure to be included in their non-fiction writing and historical research project. The project resulted in a published magazine, designed, edited, and produced by the students. In another part of the project, students copied passages of Jewett’s work in long-hand. This exercise evoked the process of one generation of writers mentoring the next. Sarah Orne Jewett was a mentor to young writers of her day, most notably Willa Cather. A second reception, Thursday, April 9, 6-8 p.m., will introduce to the exhibition work by Jeff Vinciguerra’s Marshwood High School Ceramics II students. Students will create ceramic art based upon their

own interpretations of primary sources: the house and objects in the house. For Vinciguerra, Make History is “fitting perfectly with my own philosophies as an educator”. He said, “Since I started doing this project with my students a few years ago, it See JEWETT page 11...

KITTERY The Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra (PSO) ‘Get Cozy’ chamber music series continues Sunday, February 9 with romantic music for harp and violin at The Dance Hall in Kittery at 3 p.m.

Featuring performances by PSO Concertmaster Zoia Bologovsky and PSO Principal harpist Erica Driscoll, the concert promises to be an unforgettable and eclectic set of romantic music that includes Camille Saint-Saens’ Fantaisie for violin and harp that was written for a pair of sisters while the composer was vacationing on the Italian Riviera. Perhaps because of this, the composer takes from the Italian Baroque dance form for part of this spontaneous, one-movement piece. Also to be performed will be sonatas by Louis Spohr and Adrian Shaposhnikov, and

a tidbit by Johann Sebastian Bach. Talented young violinist Sean Jang will begin the program with Sarasate’s virtuosic Zigeunerweisen. Get Cozy chamber concert tickets are $16 in advance (children 10 and under free) or $20 at the door and can be purchased online from the PSO’s website. Seating is limited and at-the-door tickets are not guaranteed to be available. Additional performance

details and tickets are available at www.portsmouthsymphony.org.

10 Years of “Shootin’ for a Cure” WELLS In 2010, Wells High School Girls Varsity Basketball Coach Don Abbott started a fundraiser to help support breast cancer awareness and care. As of January 18, that fundraiser, Shootin’ for a Cure, has raised over $293,000 for York Hospital’s Living Well With Cancer Program. Over the past decade, grade 5-12 student-athletes in the girls basketball program have raised money primarily with pledges. Then, for one day each January, fulfilled those pledges by participating in several hours of basketball

...PUMPS from page 2 fuels, helping us protect our environment and fight climate change. I encourage Maine people to see what they are eligible for.” The new suite of rebates, which took effect on January 1, is aimed at helping Maine people and businesses install high-performance heat pumps. The so-called Tier 2 rebate, which applies to the most advanced high-performance heat pump installations meeting new Efficiency Maine requirements, is doubling from $500 to $1,000 for the first indoor unit installed and from $250 to $500 for the second unit. Heat pumps meeting the so-called Tier 1 rebate standards will continue to be eligible for a $500 rebate for the first indoor unit and $250 for a second indoor or outdoor unit, as in prior years. Additionally, enhanced $2,000 rebates are also now available to homeowners who receive heating assistance through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). According to Efficiency Maine Trust, a high-performance heat pump can help an average Maine home reduce its oil consumption by 270540 gallons per year; reduce its carbon emissions by an estimated 3,600-7,250 pounds per year per home per high-performance heat pump; and, when the initiative is fully realized, can save Maine people between a total of $30-$60 million annually, providing an important boost to the local economy. free throw competition. On January 18, Shootin’ for a Cure held its eleventh free throw session with 55 athletes raising $23,000. As in previous years, a large ceremonial check was presented later that day to York Hospital representatives. This time, the check presentation was held prior to a girls varsity basketball game with Traip Academy. Four months prior on September 12, 2019, York Hospital officials dedicated the hospital’s Breast Care Center in Wells in honor of Shootin’ for a Cure and all of its past and present participating athletes and organizers who helped to make this significant achievement possible. Shootin’ for a Cure is managed by a committee of volunteers comprised of several Wells-Ogunquit CSD staff members including Coach

Abbott. On October 2, the Shootin’ for a Cure Committee members and several current participants in the girls basketball program were recognized by the WOCSD School Committee for their dedication to the program. Presenting certificates of achievement to them were Committee Chair Helena Ackerson and District Superintendent James Daly.

Staffer Hired For Six Coastal Maine Towns’ Climate Response Effort YORK COUNTY Southern Maine Planning and Development Commission (SMPDC), the nonprofit organization that leads planning and economic development in Southern Maine, has filled the newly created regional sustainability and coastal resiliency coordinator position. The position is funded by six towns – Kennebunk, Kennebunkport, Kittery, Ogun-

quit, Wells and York - to address coastal resiliency and planning. Karina Graeter, who has a background in sustainability, will start on February 10. She graduated from Bowdoin College magna cum laude with a BA in Physics and a BA with honors in Earth + Oceanographic Science. Graeter received her Masters in Earth Sciences from Dartmouth College, where she focused on climate change and published re-

search on field work conducted in Greenland. She has spent the last two years as the Sustainability Coordinator for the University of Maine. According to Paul Schumacher, Executive Director of SMPDC, “We are ecstatic to have Karina join us at SMPDC. We had many highly qualified candidates, but Karina’s mix of experience, education, and interpersonal skills set her apart. Karina will work in tandem with our Senior Coastal/Land Use Planner Abbie Sherwin. Together they will be a dynamic team who will have a positive impact on coastal resiliency and sustainability in our seacoast communities.”

Says Graeter, “I’m excited about the regional aspect of this position. Working with six different towns on the Atlantic: there’s a lot to be learned and shared from their respective experiences. And there’s much to be done as we take a community approach to plan for sea level rise. I’m looking forward to working with Abbie Sherwin. My sustainability knowledge will pair perfectly with Abbie’s coastal resiliency knowledge.” In her new job Graeter will be responsible for developing local and regional Climate Action Plans and Coastal Resiliency Plans. Southern Maine Planning

and Development Commission (SMPDC) is a nonprofit that cultivates thriving, sustainable communities and strengthens local governments by leading planning and economic development for 39 towns in Southern Maine. The organization was founded over 55 years ago. For more information, visit www.smpdc.org.

How to Reduce Skin Cancer Risk in Winter Sunscreen and the great outdoors go hand-in-hand during the warmer months of the year. For instance, few people can imagine spending a day at the beach without first covering their skin in sunscreen. But skin also must be protected when spending time outdoors in winter. The World Health Organization notes that one in every three cancers diagnosed across the globe is skin cancer. While that’s a scary notion, it’s important to note that many skin cancer cases are preventable. Protecting skin in winter, a time when many people mistakenly believe their skin is not vulnerable to damage caused by the sun, is one way for

Don’t miss a moment.

people to reduce their risk of developing skin cancer. Don’t put sunscreen in storage. Even if you won’t be beachfront and basking in the sun’s rays, it’s still important to apply sunscreen in winter. The DanaFarber Cancer Institute, which specializes in cancer treatment and actively seeks tomorrow’s cures through cutting-edge research, recommends applying a sunscreen with a minimum sunprotection factor, or SPF, of 30. Make sure to apply sunscreen to all areas that may be exposed to the sun, including the face, neck, ears, and hands. Frequently reapply sunscreen. The “set it and forget it” approach does not apply to protecting the skin with sunscreen. Reapply sunscreen every 90 minutes that you are outdoors to ensure your skin is fully protected at all times. Skiers should recognize that they are much closer

to the sun as they traverse the slopes, and that means the UV radiation is more intense on the mountain than it might be in the foothills or lower elevation areas. That heightened intensity only underscores the importance of reapplying sunscreen. Don’t forget to protect your lips. The DFCI notes that the lower lip is especially vulnerable to the sun’s rays. A lip balm with an SPF of 30 or higher should be applied before going outside and then frequently reapplied while outdoors. In addition, women can use makeup with SPF to further protect their lips and their skin. Avoid tanning booths. Indoor tanning booths increase users’ risk for skin cancer and premature skin aging. In fact, the DFCI notes that cancer researchers have found that the risk of developing melanoma is See SKIN page 23...

BUSINESS & FINANCE King Votes for USMCA WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senator Angus King (I-Maine) voted in support of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). King, long skeptical of trade deals with nations that do not share America’s labor and environmental standards, weighed the agreement’s benefits and risks for Maine through extensive consideration before concluding that, while imperfect, the trade deal improves America’s current trade position. “This was a close call,” said King. “On one-hand, I have long held concerns that trade deals with nations that lack our labor and environmental protections put Maine workers at a disadvantage. We don’t allow any state in the union to skirt these vital requirements, so why would we let any of our trading partners do so with impunity? On the other hand, this agreement adds meaningful provisions to better hold our trading partners accountable and level the playing field for Maine businesses. After carefully studying the provisions and listening to the Maine people who would be affected – including businesses large and small and the folks who work at them – I concluded that this agreement

an improvement over the current NAFTA, and much better than removing the deal entirely, which would upend Maine’s important trading relationship with Canada and create massive disruptions in supply chains. The agreement is not perfect, but on balance it’s better than other options under consideration, so I voted yes.” Historically, trade deals have had a way of leaving Maine workers behind – gutting industry and cutting our workforce. Senator King has long held that the only fair trade deals are those that center on making sure America’s trading partners adopt heightened environmental protections, enforceable labor and

workforce provisions, and safeguards for intellectual property. Upon extensive review, Senator King believes that USMCA improves the current 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which he opposed because it did not require Mexico to adopt stronger labor and environmental protections. Specifically, and in contrast to NAFTA, Senator King believes that USMCA takes important steps to ensure Mexico will make measurable progress in his three priority areas. Given that Canada and Mexico already have access to U.S. markets, he voted in support of replacing the original NAFTA with the improved USMCA.

Don’t forget to protect the skin while on vacation. People who vacation in warm climates during the winter may be the envy of coworkers and neighbors upon returning home with a tan, but it’s imperative that travelers prioritize protecting their skin while on vacation. Embrace the same principles of skin protection, including applying sunscreen and wearing wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses, that you would when lounging by the pool or visiting the beach in the summer. Unprotected skin is vulnerable to sun damage and skin cancer year-round, including when the temperatures dip below freezing. YORK York Ready for 100% is a citizens’ group that advocates for clean, renewable energy and wish to share information with the local community on the subject of composting. Did you know that food scraps make up at least 50% of the garbage picked up at curbside in York? These food scraps go into a landfill or are incinerated. Either disposal method generates high levels of greenhouse gases, including methane and carbon dioxide, the great culprits behind climate change. One of the easiest ways to help is composting at home. By doing this, residents can reduce contributions to landfill volume and incinerated garbage and thus

By composting, the parts of food thrown away that contain vitamins and minerals are recycled back into the ecosystem and taken up by the plants and flowers that grow on the land. ~ Sports & Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, I would like to thank you for the service you render to so many people. What a great contribution to others. My question is this: I have Windows 10 and when it get a document in pdf format that I need to input data or edit, how do I do that? Please advise and thank you, Judy

Dear Judy, The great thing about sending a PDF document to someone is that anyone can download the free Adobe Acrobat Reader and view your document. However, if you want to edit a PDF document, you need to install a PDF editing program. Adobe is hoping you will purchase their program, Adobe Acrobat, (that is why they give away Adobe Acrobat Reader so freely) but at nearly $500 or $14.99/month it is out of reach for most home users. Another option, would be to use the free, LibreOffice to

open and edit your PDF file. You can also use Microsoft Word, but you would have to convert the document to Word format first, make your changes, then export the document back to PDF format. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Do “restart” and “reboot” mean the same thing? I see both terms used, but am not sure if there’s a difference between them. Thank you for all you do! Mrs H. Dear Mrs. H, Yes, restart and reboot both mean that you shut the computer down, and then start it back up again. Sometimes turning your computer on is referred to as, “Booting” your computer, which is where the term, “reboot” comes from. I’m glad you asked this question! Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, On my computer, I used to be able to right-click on things

and get a menu that would help me perform certain tasks related to the thing I right-clicked on. Now that I am using a touch screen on my laptop, I can tap instead of click, but how do I right-tap? Thanks, Kris Dear Kris, I am glad to hear that you have learned to right-click on icons to get more options. On your touchscreen, you can get the same list of shortcuts by holding your tap for a second or so. Then, when you lift your finger that same context menu will appear. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have windows 8. How long will it be before I would have to change it to another version of windows, or could I keep this for a long time? Will

will no longer provide security updates that can help protect your PC from harmful viruses, spyware and other malicious software that can steal your personal information. If you are running Windows 8 on a computer that is already a couple of years old, by the time 2023 comes, if the computer is still running, it will be 6 or more years old. Since the average computer currently lasts about 5 years, I would plan on replacing the computer with a new one running Windows 10 at that time. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Elizabeth has answered thousands of computer questions over the years. To submit a question, email her at elizabeth.boston@gmail.com.

Dear Will, According to Microsoft, it will be safe to continue using Windows 8 until January, 2023. After that date, Microsoft
