Nominations for outstanding senior volunteers will be accepted between Feb. 1 and March 31. State winners then will be selected by popular vote at SalutetoSeniorService.com. Online voting will take place from April 15 to 30. From those state winners, a panel of senior care experts will select the national Salute to Senior Service honoree. Home Instead Inc. will donate $500 to each of the state winners’ favorite nonprofit organizations and their stories will be posted on the Salute to Senior Service Wall of Fame. In addition, $5,000 will be donated to the national winner’s nonprofit charity of choice. “We all know seniors who do so much for our community,” said Howard Schultz, owner of the Home Instead Senior Care offices serving York County. “These silent heroes give selflessly, expecting nothing in return. That means that youth are exposed to clever, aggressive marketing.” said Sue Patterson, HMP coordinator for Choose To Be Healthy. “The Star Store program is a great step that responsible retailers can take to help reduce Big Tobacco’s influence on kids.” For Cat N Nine Tails store owners Brad and Louise Leigh, limiting tobacco advertisements See STAR page 7...

We think the lottery is the fairest way to give everyone a chance.” In past years, registration for the popular fundraiser would sell out in minutes. “It was a real challenge,” said Kelly Martin, event manager for Maine Cancer Foundation. “We would open up the registration at midnight and all the computers would crash because so many people were trying to sign up.” The Tri for a Cure is a “sprint” triathlon, based on a 1/3rd-mile swim, a 15-mile bike course and a 3-mile run. Many of the athletes in the race belong to teams, with each leg of the race tackled by a different woman. “These women are the main focus of the Tri, but I like to remember all the people standing behind them,” said Marchese. “There are thousands of donors and volunteers supporting the athletes. It’s not an easy decision to join a triathlon, it’s a real commitment.” According to Marchese, entering the Tri for a Cure is often the start of a major life change for the participants. SOuTH BerWICK – For members of the Berwick Academy class of 2013, being accepted to the colleges of their choice has been something they have been working toward since coming to the school. Over the summer, many of them spent time taking college essay writing workshops and filling out applications, starting school last fall with much of the work of applying completed. Because of their persistence, dedication and efforts, nearly two-thirds of seniors were able to submit at least one application by Nov. 1. By late December, this hard work resulted in 40 percent of the class being admitted early to at least one college. The Berwick class of 2013 possesses an academic profile of national excellence and has earned the highest grade-point average (GPA) of any Berwick class since 2005 and the second

highest in a decade. Students have taken 173 Advanced Placement (AP) classes in the last two years and

earned outstanding scores on their AP tests last year. There are a number of students in the various honor

They are Lily Hahn, who will attend Yale University in the fall, and Jamie Meader, who will attend Brown University. The college process can be daunting for both students and their families. At Berwick, the college counseling office strives to partner with families and provides them with an overview of the process that ensures each student is able to find a school that fits their individual needs. One of the areas the college counseling office finds extremely important is helping families understand and navigate the financial component of the college process, an area where Berwick believes it is crucial that families should be informed and proactive. Berwick offers two distinct financial aid informational programs each year, one for parents of younger students and another specifically for seniors and their parents. Additionally, Berwick offers information about outside scholarships and information on applying for these awards, an increasingly important source of funding for our students. Some of the schools to which students have already been admitted include Acadia University, American University, Berklee College of Music, Brown University, Case Western Reserve University, Connecticut College, George Washington University, Mount Holyoke College, New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts, Northeastern University, Tufts University, Univ. of New England, Univ. of Vermont, Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Yale University. Director of College Counseling Moira McKinnon commented, “Students appreciate the personal attention, and we feel lucky to be able to provide it.”

An exhibit mounted by Cindi Young-Gomes of the Museums of Old York, brings together the memories of Miss Elizabeth Perkins’ extensive travels abroad, covering every continent except Australia. Miss Perkins attended the coronation of the last Czar of Russia. As an amateur photogra-

pher she captured images of her visit to the ruins of Angkor Thom in Cambodia by elephant. An adventurer, she was pulled up a cliff by basket in order to reach a Greek mountain-top monastery. The coronation cup, the faded photograph, and her written account give us a glimpse into the world of Elizabeth Perkins, and how she took the world and made it her own.

Museums of Old York has created a display about civilian defense and airplane spotting during World War II in coastal towns such as York, where after Pearl Harbor, citizens patrolled the beaches

and watched the skies in case of another attack. Can you identify the aircraft in the display? For More Information Contact the library at 363-2818 or visit www.york.lib.me.us.

~ News ~ Wildlife Tracking Program Planned at Conservation area YOrK – The “Gateway to Maine: Outside” partnership is encouraging people to enjoy the natural beauty and health benefits of connecting with nature in southern Maine by offering a diverse array of walks, talks and outdoor workshops. First on the slate for 2013 is “Tracking Winter Wildlife” from 9 a.m. to noon on Sunday, Feb. 3, at the York Land Trust’s Hilton-Winn Conservation Area. Track alongside expert tracker Dan Hansche of White Pine Programs for a quick primer and understanding of wildlife track, sign, and ecology. Though wildlife tracking can be done year-round, a fresh snowfall that’s not too deep can make seeing evidence of many species of wildlife in a short span of time especially easy. Throughout New England, southern Maine is home

business & finance What To Do with Your Retirement account before the next economic Downturn ic downturn is how to approach their retirement accounts, most notably a 401(k). When the economy begins to struggle, men and women may notice their 401(k) plans are struggling right along with it, losing money that most were counting for their retirements. This can induce a certain degree of panic, as account holders worry about their financial futures and how they are going

A struggling economy can have both instant and longterm consequences. When the economy is suffering, consumers tend to spend less in the short term while making financial decisions that affect them over the long haul. One of the biggest quandaries men and women face during a recession or econom-

to get by should the recession last and their retirement accounts continue to shrink. But such panic might be unwarranted. According to the investment management firm Vanguard, participant saving and investing behavior had returned to prerecession levels by 2010, and participant account balances actually rose 13 percent between 2005-2010, despite the considerable market shock that occurred during the recession of 2008-2009. Those figures illustrate that even during a particularly bad economic swoon investors will return to their typical behavior sooner rather than later. Therefore it pays to avoid overreacting at the onset of a downturn and maintain your peace of mind. While some people manage to maintain a cool head during times of economic struggles, others may lose sleep when the next recession or downturn rears its ugly head. To avoid succumbing to such stress, consider the

following tips to protect your retirement accounts should the economy once again take a turn for the worse. * Pay attention to your portfolio. Young people just beginning their professional careers are often told to enroll in a 401(k) program as soon as possible, but to avoid making any changes in the near future once the account has been set up. While no investors, young or old, should allow a knee-jerk reaction after a bad financial quarter to dictate how they manage their retirement accounts, that doesn’t mean you should ignore an account entirely. Pay attention to your portfolio, examining it at least once per year so you can make adjustments to your investments if need be. Just don’t allow a sudden reaction to a bad quarter dictate these adjustments, which should only be made after a careful examination of your retirement account’s portfolio and its performance. If you’re happy with the performance, don’t change a thing. * Reduce your risk as you age. Financial experts can often predict when the economy will thrive and when it will struggle. But unless you are such an expert, avoid playing with fire. As you age, reduce your risk with regard to your investments.

Young people can afford to take on more risk because they have more time to make up for a risk that doesn’t work out. Men and women age 50 and older have no such luxury and should reconfigure their retirement accounts as they age so their investments are less risky and more conservative. This strategy should be put to use even if you lost a substantial amount of money during a previous recession or downturn. It might be tempting to try to make up for lost money, but that strategy carries considerable risk, and you might end up depleting your retirement savings a second time. * Spread the money around. When contributing to a retirement account such as a 401(k), the standard is to deposit 6 percent of each paycheck into that account. If you’re depositing more than 6 percent into your retirement account, consider decreasing your retirement contribution to the standard amount and depositing the extra money into a highinterest savings account. The savings account won’t put your deposits at risk, and if the economy is faring well, you will still be doing well with your 401(k) See RETIRE page 11...

...RETIRE from page 10 while ensuring some of your money won’t suffer should the economy suddenly take a turn for the worse. * Don’t cash out too early. When the economy struggles, many investors have discovered they simply don’t have the stomach for investing. That’s perfectly understandable with certain investments, but a retirement account should not be one of them. Cashing out a retirement account too early

could incur substantial penalties that, if your retirement account was affected poorly by a bad year, may only further deplete an account you likely spent years building. Avoid the temptation to cash out early if your retirement account is struggling. It’s often not worth the steep price. This article was provided by MetroCreative. Chamber Breaks Ground for New Office

KeNNeBuNK – The Kennebunk-Kennebunkport-Arundel Chamber of Commerce broke ground recently for its new office at 16 Water St. in downtown Kennebunk. “We chose this location because of its proximity to Main Street,” said Chamber Building Committee Chairman Judy Andrews of AndrewsMilligan Real Estate. “We’re not taking up retail space, this is an easy location to find and we’re a part of the downtown community. We think that being located across from a park, next to the river makes this a really special spot.” Kennebunk Town Manager Barry Tibbetts said he was pleased the Chamber chose the Water Street location for its new administrative home. “We’re very excited to have the Chamber return to downtown,” he said, adding that the new site will bring visitors to the downtown area. Executive Board President David Cluff of Duffy’s said the new location will help the Chamber better serve its members in all three communities. “The Chamber is very excited to be moving into new administrative offices,” said Cluff. “This in no way means we’re leaving Lower Village or the Dock Square area, though. We will continue to have a presence there.” Cluff said the Chamber will continue to maintain a kiosk on Western Avenue in Lower Village, just steps from Dock Square, and will look to add another kiosk in Arundel once that town completes its visioning process. The new, freestanding Water Street office will contain both the administrative offices and a visitor center. It is being developed by Chickadee Enterprises and built by Douston Construction. It is due to open in the spring. Tips for submitting articles to The Sentinel...

Futuro Builders Broaden Future of Green Building WellS – The term development has evolved over the years to mean far more than just the addition of cookie-cutter compounds and skyscrapers. As the world becomes more attentive to the environmental impacts of building, sustainability and efficiency initiatives emerge as priorities for the industry’s future. For business owners Jesse Ware and Craig Briggs, the future of sustainable building is simply called Futuro. In 2011, industry veterans Briggs and Ware combined their years of experience and unwavering commitment to sustainability to launch Futuro Builders. From commercial projects to residential homes, Futuro Builders is a building firm that doesn’t promote environmental sustainability as the future, but rather as the standard. Co-founder Ware is honest about the green direction of Futuro Builders. “We approach our work the way we do for many reasons. The biggest reason, though, is we believe in it. It is at the core of our values,” says Ware. “For both Craig and I, creating something that is healthier, more efficient, and has less impact on the earth is always going to be the right thing to do.” There is little to disprove that Futuro Builders streamlines the industry in sustainable development, if not only by approach but by execution, as well. Futuro’s newest project, the Brackett Estates in Wells, is exactly the type of cutting-edge development that demonstrates how green living is cost efficient, too. Distinguished as Net Zero housing, the 26-unit Brackett Estates are engineered to offset the amount of energy consumed in the interior design, extensive insulation, and intuitive mechanical systems. Grid-tied solar panels harness renewable energy

to heat, cool and power the units while cellulose-derived insulation maintains efficacy in both energy demands and energy costs. “The houses at Brackett Estates are more than just green homes. They are also the healthier, more cost-effective solution to sustainable living,” says Ware. “Healthy living is an important part of our approach to building and we find it integrates well with energy efficiency. I think this is the way we are going to see buildings designed as a standard in the next ten years.” The Brackett Estates showcase the many advantages of integrating health and ecological standards. Through strategic design and research, the homes at Brackett Estates are built with only the safest materials, free of toxins and harmful chemicals, and contain air exchange systems that provide constant circulation of fresh air. As Ware observed, healthier building strategies are complimented well by sustainability standards. Both require careful planning and selection to maximize efficiency and safety. Health & Fitness Luncheon on Aging in the Home to be hosted at Kennebunk Unitarian

KeNNeBuNK – There’s a burgeoning movement of elders in the U.S. today known loosely as “the village movement.” Their common goal is simple: to remain in their homes as they age with the support of their friends and peers. There are about a hundred such groups in the nation, and one of them is in Kennebunk. The 10 members of “The Group” will hold an informational light lunch from 11 a.m. to about 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church on Main

Street in Kennebunk. Admission is free but guests are asked to bring one item of non-perishable food for the York County Shelter Programs food pantry. While the purpose of the event is informational, members of “The Group” also want to encourage others to begin their own groups. Formed about a year and a half ago, “The Group” holds monthly potlucks in members’ homes with an informal chat period before sharing the meal. Although the chats are wide ranging, the focus is on those

questions common to all seniors, and to those in the village movement in particular: How do we age gracefully in our own homes? Since that question is at the heart of the issue, it breaks down into more specific questions for discussion: How can technology facilitate aging at home? Are there private enterprises nearby that are specifically set up to help us do this? What in-home care do they offer? How do we take the burden of our care off our children, and do we want to? What histories can we share about ourselves, our parents and their parents as they went through the aging process? And, perhaps the

most important question: How can we help and support each other in a real way?

No reservations are required for the luncheon. Simply show up.

Orthodontic braces are used to help position and align an individual’s teeth. Getting braces is something that is typically seen as a rite of childhood. But many parents are unsure as to when their children should be fitted for braces. Although many children benefit the most from getting braces between the ages of 10 and 15, the American Association of Orthodontists as well as international orthodontic authorities advise that children should get their first orthodontic screening by the age of seven, when there may be a mixture

of permanent and juvenile teeth in the child’s mouth. The orthodontist may be able to forecast any future problems that may arise and note if there are any preliminary steps that can be taken. Even though many children wait until adolescence to get braces, and most doctors will want to monitor kids’ oral structure as they grow, familiarity with a child’s mouth enables an orthodontist to act when the time is right. Some orthodontists work to remedy an overbite or underbite, and they also may address spacing issues.

THYROID DISEASE IS HORRIBLE!

Why does 3PM feel like 10PM used to? Why do you wake up at 2 A.M. with a worried mind? Where did those 20+ pounds come from? Why does your doctor tell you your labs are normal?

YOU DON’T HAVE TO LIVE THIS WAY! Come to My Free Thyroid Recovery Program Workshop

THIS THURSDAY EVENING A Personal Note from Dr. Donatello:

I have a personal connection to thyroid disease as my wife suffered with Hashimotos Thyroiditis for many years. Notice how I said “suffered” as in “the past.” She still has thyroid disease but no longer has all the symptoms listed above. Once I saw the incredible results in her, I knew I could help others. I am now known in the Northeast for getting people’s lives back on track when they have thyroid issues. In the last year four years, we have helped more than 500 people in New England with this illness. Many drive two hours or more to see us.

You may have seen this ad before and talked yourself out of getting help. You rationalize things will turn around in time. But think for a second about the path you have been going down. How have things worked out in the last couple of years? It’s a new year and now is the time to act. You must start looking at the triggers or the NEXT 5-10 years will not be pretty. The vast majority of thyroid disease is auto-immune in origin and until you work on what triggers your problem, you will continue to get worse and worse. I will show you why in this 45-minute talk, but more importantly, I will show you what it will take to get you better. I hope to see you there on Thursday evening! Dr. Jeff Donatello, D.C.

New advancements in the treatment of thyroid conditions. Why you may not need medication at all! (And why the meds just might be making you worse.) The mechanism that causes many women in this country to have weight, energy and sleep issues. Why this mechanism is almost always ignored by your doctor. What new lab tests are now available to identify the true cause of your thyroid problem. The specific foods that should be avoided at all costs with thyroid disease. Not diagnosed with thyroid disease BUT still have these symptoms? There may be answers for you also. Dr. Donatello’s protocols are based on the ground breaking work of Dr. Datis Kharrazian, author of the book, “Why Do I Still Have Thyroid Symptoms When My Lab Tests Are Normal?”

How braces work Braces straighten teeth by putting steady pressure on the teeth to help shift the teeth into correct position. The orthodontist will determine how long to keep the braces on. As the teeth shift, the wires that are part of the braces will be cut and adjusted accordingly. Teeth that require extra help may necessitate the use of specialized headgear to impart extra pressure on the mouth. Today’s braces are much less noticeable than those of yesteryear. Some braces are smaller in profile, and there are clear varieties and those that are placed behind the teeth. The wires used in braces also have changed. They are smaller and more technologically advanced to help straighten teeth faster and easier. living with braces Braces will require some alterations to a child’s diet as well as his or her oral hygiene routine. Sticky foods or ones with small particles that tend to lodge between the teeth should be avoided as much as possible. Chewing gum can be exceptionally troublesome. Sticky candies may get stuck, and you could pull off brackets trying to unlodge the candy. Keeping teeth clean also will require a few extra steps. Because of the small parts and crevices braces create in the mouth, food can lodge in areas more easily. If left that way, one could end up with tooth decay. It is adviseable to use specially designed floss brushes and picks to clean the teeth and dislodge any trapped particles. Also, continue with routine dental cleanings as scheduled. after braces At the time braces are removed, most patients are fitted for a retainer that will be worn at certain periods of the day (usually at night) to help keep teeth aligned properly. It is important to continue to use the retainer as advised by the orthodontist to help prevent teeth from shifting or becoming crooked once more. Braces are a necessity for thousands of people. They’re generally applied during the preteen years, but younger children as well as adults have used braces successfully. This article was provided by MetroCreative. Health & Fitness Great Gifts Ideas for Those Hoping to Get Healthier

One of the more common New Year’s resolutions is a commitment to get-

of making New Year’s resolutions by giving a loved one who wants to improve personal health a gift that can make keeping that resolution that much easier. When shopping this season, consider the following gift ideas for that health-conscious friend or family member who’s looking to turn over a new leaf in the new year by adopting a healthier lifestyle. Gym membership Fitness centers tend to see

a spike in enrollment at the dawn of a new year, as men and women who want to get healthier take the first step by signing up for a gym membership. Many fitness centers waive their initiation fees in an effort to attract more customers. When trying to help a friend or family member get back on a healthy track, offer to pay a portion of their membership fees or, if their preferred club is charging an initiation fee, offer to pay that instead. Recipients might feel more obligated to go to the gym if they know a loved one helped pay for it. Cardiovascular machine Many people cite a lack of time as the primary reason they don’t exercise enough. Getting to and from the gym takes time, but having a cardiovascular machine, whether it’s an elliptical machine, an exercise bike or a treadmill, at home removes this hurdle, increasing the chances that people will exercise more often. And the potential benefits of routine cardiovascular exercise are con-

siderable. According to the American Heart Association, as little as 30 minutes of daily cardiovascular exercise each day can significantly reduce an individual’s risk for heart disease. Bicycle Few activities are more enjoyable and simultaneously beneficial as riding a bicycle. Many people still enjoy riding a bike just like they did when they were children, when they might not have known just how healthy riding a bicycle was. Cycling improves cardiovascular fitness, lowering a person’s risk for heart disease while helping to build and tone muscles. In addition, men and women with preexisting joint conditions often find riding a bicycle is a great low-impact exercise that encourages them to get off the couch in a way that doesn’t aggravate their conditions. Many adults received a bicycle as a gift when they were See GIFTS page 19...

Railroad Corridors Offer Recreational Trails for Exercise When railroad tracks were laid across the country in the 18th and 19th centuries, transportation flourished. Although many railroad tracks are still being used, many have become obsolete and abandoned eyesores criss-crossing miles of land. However, different organizations, most notably the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, have transformed several abandoned railway corridors into recreational trails and bike routes. Coast to coast, previously unusable land has been transformed into viable recreation spaces for hiking and biking. From the Bayshore Trail, a portion of the Henry Hudson Trail in central New Jersey, to the Bob Jones City to the Sea Trail in California, outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy miles of renovated paths for their recreational pursuits. In 2009, visitors to the Hudson Valley’s Catskill Mountains region were able to christen the “Walkway Over the Hudson” trail, which was built on the former steel-truss ...GIFTS from page 18 children, and those looking to adopt a healthier lifestyle might be just as excited to receive a bicycle once again. Cookbook Adopting a healthier lifestyle does not have to be all about exercise. In fact, eating healthier is just as important as exercising more. A common misconception about eating healthy is that healthy foods don’t boast the flavor of those irresistible, yet ultimately unhealthy, foods we can’t get enough of. However, a healthy diet can be flavorful, so help healthconscious men and women get started with a cookbook filled with healthy and delicious recipes. Before buying a cookbook, find out if the book’s eventual recipient has any specific dietary restrictions, including if he or she needs to eat gluten-free or has been told to avoid red meat. Then find a cookbook that suits them but does so in a way that allows them to embrace healthy eating. This article was provided by MetroCreative. Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge, once the longest bridge in the world, stretching 6,767 feet (approximately 1.25 miles) across the Hudson River. Rails-to-Trails Conservancy is based in Washington, D.C. and has been helping to transform former railway lines into trails since its inception in 1986. The nonprofit’s mission is to create a nationwide network of trails and connecting corridors to build healthier places for healthier people.

Because many of these trails are built on flat or gentle grade paths, they provide a lowimpact workout for cyclists, walkers, inline skaters, crosscountry skiers, equestrians, and wheelchair-bound active people. Not only do many of these multi-use paths serve as ideal places for recreational activities, but they also help to create conservation spaces for wildlife and historical preservation corridors. It is up to local govern-

ments to assess if a railroad corridor is officially abandoned and to buy the land to build a trail. Many of these efforts are also assisted by donations from local residents adjacent to former railroad lines. RTC has identified more than 1,400 railtrails throughout the United States, including one in every state. There are currently more than 1,000 additional trails in the works. Individuals looking to find a trail nearby can visit TrailLink.com and search by

zip code or state. Rail-trails, as well as rail-with-trail (a trail that runs alongside an active railway), provide recreational space and opportunities for exercise. They also are environmentally friendly ways to transform previously unused and wasted spaces. This article was provided by MetroCreative. ~ News ~ North Berwick Students Give Back to the Community NOrTH BerWICK – North Berwick Elementary School celebrates the 100th day of school each year by giving back to the community. The kindergarten through fifth-grade students spend the first six weeks of the new year raising awareness and gathering donations. Last year, over 2,000 items were given. The program provides a way to help the community and empower students to understand they can make a change in the world. The event’s co-directors, Principal Ron Robert and kindergarten teacher Sharon Beckwith said the 10th anniversary of the event is particularly exciting. “In our view, having children collect food for their own community food bank helps to instill in them a sense of local and global citizenship as well as to help them see the value of small contributions that really add up to making a big difference,” Robert said.

On Feb. 14, the students will meet in the school’s gymnasium to display all the food they have collected before it is donated to the New Covenant Food Pantry in North Berwick. For years, the MSAD-60 Superintendent’s office and the North Berwick Police Department have been a part of the event. This year, in addition to donating canned goods, the new K-9 unit at NBPD will even be donating dog food. The showcase allows the students to celebrate all their hard work, without losing sight of the true purpose -- making a difference for families in their town. After a decade of success, NBE is inviting the extended community to take part in the 10th annual celebration. ~ News ~ location Selected for Precision machining Technology Program WellS – York County Community College (YCCC) has secured a location in Sanford as a new site to house its Precision Machining Technology program, which is slated to launch in the fall. YCCC signed a lease agreement with Goodall Hospital for a 6,050 square foot space at One Eagle Drive in Sanford. Over the coming months YCCC will do site renovations and install the high tech machining equipment needed for the program. Graduates of the two year associate’s degree program will enter the job market with an indepth multi-disciplinary education in mathematics, phys-

ics, engineering technology, manufacturing processes and methods, as well as a broad education in computer studies, business and liberal arts. The program was developed in partnership with North Berwick manufacturer Pratt & Whitney, which donated $190,000 to fund a portion of the equipment costs. The Maine legislature, led by former Rep. Devin Beliveau (D – Kittery), Rep. Kathy Chase (R – Wells), and former Republican Sen. Jon Courtney (Sanford), has agreed to provide an annual appropriation of $257,000 to fund the program’s operating costs. General Dynamics and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard are also involved in the

They are available for students attending secondary, post-secondary, and graduate schools, as well as non-traditional programs. A complete listing of scholarships available for the upcoming school year is now online at the Maine Community Foundation website, www. mainecf.org. In 2012, the community foundation awarded more than $1,700,000 in scholarships to 1,170 Maine students attending schools in the state, across the country, and around the world. “Each scholarship award is a gift of educational opportunity from a Maine Community

Foundation donor to present and future generations,” said Meredith Jones, MaineCF president. These funds are established for a variety of reasons, from honoring a family member to carrying on the tradition of “giving back” that helped an individual through college. To establish a scholarship fund at the community foundation, call Cherie Galyean, scholarship manager, at 1-877700-6800. With offices in Portland and Ellsworth, the Maine Community Foundation works with donors and other partners to improve the quality of life for all Maine people. ~ ask The Computer lady ~ dear Computer lady, I never had this happen before. Working on my computer, screen went black for only a few seconds, then came back on upside down. I tried to contact Vaio help and MSN help, but had to turn computer upside down to type (not as easy as it sounds) and accidentally turned off the power while chatting with a service person. I got the idea to restore and it worked. Hooray. Did I hit a button I did not know I had (my hand is in a small splint)? This is so weird. Everyone I tell laughed! Dottie dear dottie, You probably did hit a keyboard combination to turn the screen upside down, however I can’t really tell you exactly what keyboard combination you used. Flipping the screen is a “feature” of the video card driver, and since there are quite a few different video card manufacturers, there is no, “universal” flip the screen keyboard combination. Some video card drivers have you hold down the “Ctrl and Alt” keys then press the arrow keys to rotate the display. This did not work on my computer, however, I could go into the control panel and flip my monitor image. (it was hard to use the mouse with the upside down screen!) Then I just changed the setting to put it back the right way. If this happens in the future, you can either do a system restore, or try to go to your display adapter in the Control Panel and change it from there. Elizabeth dear Computer lady, I recently downloaded Windows Live Mail to my laptop so that it would be the same e-mail as my desktop and the text in the

menu, folders and message received boxes is so tiny that I can hardly read them. It’s not like that on my desktop computer Windows 7, 64-bit. I have windows XP with sp3, 32-bit on my laptop. I have changed the font in the outgoing mail, incoming mail, control panel (changed icon and menu sizes) and nothing seems to affect those items. Is there a way to change the size of these texts/fonts or am I wishful thinking in Eliot, Maine? Thanks, Glenn dear Glenn, Since I have not seen your laptop, I am going to take a guess here. I suspect that the resolution on the laptop is so high that everything is too small to easily read. I would suggest that you change the resolution. Here is how: To change the resolution in XP: 1. Right click on a blank spot on your desktop and then click Properties. This will bring up the Display Properties window. 2. In the Display Properties window, click on the Settings tab all the way to the right of the window. 3. On the Settings page, look at the lower left section of the screen entitled Screen Resolution. It will have a slider that you can move with your mouse.

4. Slide the slider to the left to make your resolution lower (and the images on your screen larger) and click OK when you are finished. Elizabeth dear Computer lady, I’ve been a reader of your emails for quite some time and they are very helpful so first let me say thank you for all your help. I have helped others with your columns. My question is: I want to move some files with pictures and other info to an external hd which I know how to do but once they are on the external can I now delete them from my desktop PC and will I be able to retrieve them again? Hope this is not to complicated. Thanks again. Mary dear mary, You actually have the hardest part done already, since you have backed up your files to the external hard drive. Once you have copied your files to the external hard drive, you can delete them from your desktop and still be able to get them back, or use them from the external hard drive. This is not, however, how I would do it. If files (like family photos) are important to you, you want to have them in more than one location, in fact, the best practice is to have them in three locations, with at least one of these locations physically away from the others.

Let me explain. If you copy your files to the external hard drive, and delete them from your computer, you will have access to them unless (or until) the external hard drive stops working. It could be damaged from a fall, from a magnetic force, or even from theft or fire. Even if none of those things happen, all hard drives die eventually from old age, for some it is a year or two, but for many, it is between 5 and 10 years. The reality is that you just never know when it will happen. If you keep a copy of those files in a second location, either on your computer, or perhaps on a CD or DVD, you will still have a backup copy when the external hard drive gets old or damaged, but if the second copy is in the same physical location as your first copy, you would still lose them in the case of theft, flood, or fire. To protect your important files against all types of loss, you really need a third backup that is in a different physical location. Some businesses, have a backup system that includes a weekly rotation to an off-site location like a safety deposit box. Some families keep things like pictures on disks in different family members homes. I like to use the cloud for

my off site backup. Both Carbonite and Mozy are great for offsite backup because they work automatically in the background while you are using your computer. I hope this information will help you keep your photos and other information safe and sound. Elizabeth dear Computer lady, My desktop icons are “frozen.” By that I mean I cannot click on and drag my desk top icons anywhere, they refuse to “drag.” This recently happened when I put a wallpaper from Microsoft on my screen, which I’ve never done before. Now I can’t change the size, or move my desktop icons. What can I do? Thank you in advance for all your help. Mary Ann dear mary ann, It sounds like you might have “Auto Arrange” turned on. To turn off Auto Arrange, right click on a blank spot on your desktop, point to “View” in the context menu that appears, then click on “Auto Arrange Icons” to turn it on or off. Hopefully this fixes your problem. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Browse her articles at: www.askthecomputerlady.com/questions.

WeST KeNNeBuNK – dolly This adorable eight year old is Dolly. Unfortunately for Dolly, her family hit hard times and lost their home. Moving into a rental that would not allow pets without a large deposit they were forced to surrender Dolly to the county shelter. This little sweetie was lucky to go to a foster home until she was scheduled on a transport to Maine. Dolly is very loving and sweet. She is a bit shy most likely due to her circumstances, but once she knows you want to be her friend her true colors show. Dolly gets along great with other dogs, cats, and respectful people of all ages. So if a sweet little senior is what you are looking for, Dolly may be just the girl for you. Baby Baby is a big sweet heart of a six year old cat. He enjoys spending most of his time lounging about, taking in the goings on around him. Baby gets along great with other cats, and people of all ages. The only thing this sweet heart asks for from his animal and people friends alike is respect. Do you think Baby would be a good match for you? If so please stop in and meet Baby soon. duncan Mops these days are so drab, so unflattering. They’re often one solid color, usually silver or white, and have no personality. Well now’s your chance to spice up your cleaning routine with a new multicolored mop! That’s right, this brand new model is three different colors, a great blend of white, black, and orange. And it cleans just as well as any other... wait, what’s that? It’s actually a Guinea Pig? Named Duncan? Oh...well...I suppose you won’t be doing any cleaning with little Duncan here, but his colorful fur will surely brighten up your household. Like many Guinea Pigs, Duncan might not be a social butterfly, but once he gets used to his people he does enjoy getting attention. It’ll be hard

not to give him a lot of attention too, what with this little fella being so furry and adorable. Duncan would make a great addition to practically any home. And who knows, perhaps if he runs about your kitchen a little bit, he might at least mop away a little bit of dirt, even unknowingly.

NOrTH BerWICK – meet Flower… Flower is a beautiful rare Lemon Walker Coon Hound who is making her way North away from the eighty plus degree temps in her native state, just to get a new loving home with a New England family. Flower is a gentle sweet puppy, excellent with children in any age group, will do well with other dogs and non aggressive cats. Flower is a year old spayed female, current on all necessary vaccinations, wormed, Front lined, and has passed her wellness exam. Safe Haven Humane Society WellS – Oreo’s Story One of the things we pride ourselves on is that we never euthanize any kitty if they test positive for Feline Leukemia. When Oreo tested positive we were heartbroken. Now began our search for a home for him where he could be an only kitty because Feline Leukemia is transmittable to other felines. Until then, Oreo would have a long wait in isolation in a small room. For months he waited and so did we for someone with a big heart to come and fall in love with our boy. Although Oreo had a nice room with toys and a sunny window and kitty trees and soft beds, he was lonely and his days and nights were long. Finally during the holidays a woman started visiting and she met our Oreo. Marilyn Hutchinson from Sanford had lost her two beloved kitties and was grieving for

them. At first, visiting our adoption center was difficult for her because she missed her cats so much. Despite that, she would visit and bring a book to read in Oreo’s room so he wouldn’t be lonely. Her visit with Oreo became a Saturday routine. Marilyn knew that Oreo needed a home. But, would she consider fostering or adopting a kitty who might not live as long as other cats after she just lost two of her long lived kitties? Would she be setting herself up for more heartache? During her visits with Oreo she saw how bored he was in his little room. Other cats were in the next room, and he loved other cats but he could not be with them. Each time she visited him, she hoped Oreo would give her a sign and show some interest in her. Instead, Oreo seemed a bit aloof and indifferent but then again, she understood that Oreo was depressed and it affected his mood. After a few more visits and a discussion with her vet, Marilyn listened to her heart. She told our team she wanted to take Oreo home. Her mind was made up when she said: “What’s more important me having a lap

cat or him having a good home for however long he has?” Actions like this speak volumes to us about the depth of kindness that some animal lovers have for animals with special needs. Our adoption center had more than 60 kitties at the time. Many were younger than Oreo and none of them had any life threatening illnesses. Many of them were affectionate love bugs. But Marilyn didn’t choose them. Instead, she chose the cat that needed a home the most. Oreo! When delivered to Marilyn’s home Oreo was so happy! He had a house to run thru! He had many windows, not just one! He had stairs to run up and down! And most important, he had Marilyn! Now he had someone to love him! A recent conversation with Marilyn reveled that Oreo now is showing her great signs of affection. He is happy and loves to curl up in her lap. His health is good, he shows no signs of feline leukemia and we are hopeful

Oreo will live a long, happy life. Safe Haven promotes the adoption of our Feline Leukemia positive kitties by including them in our Assisted Adoption Program. The adoption fee is waived and vet bills for the kitty are paid for by Safe Haven if taken to our appointed vet. This assistance lifts the financial concerns anyone might have about adopting a kitty with an existing health issue. I asked Marilyn if she would recommend others adopting a feline leuk kitty and her reply was: “If you don’t have other kitties and have time, it’s a great idea to adopt a feline Leukemia cat. Why wouldn’t you? Just like us, they deserve to be loved and have a home!” Our many thanks to Marilyn Hutchins for opening her home to our wonderful Oreo! Positive affirmation Workshop set at Cancer Care Center SaNFOrd – The Cancer Care Center of York County 27 Industrial Ave., Sanford, invites cancer patients, families, and caregivers to a free “Positive Affirmation Workshop” from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 14. Joanne Bargioni, certified Reiki master-teacher, will teach the importance of daily affirmations and how to write effective affirmations. Affirmations are the assertion that

Young Children’s Area. Last fall, the Great Hall of the former St. Michael’s Church was opened, revealing a grand and inspiring space with architectural details intact. Since then, most of the bookshelves have been installed and, with the help of more than 30 volunteers assisting library staff, filled with books. “In the past two years, in a very challenging economy, individual donors, local organizations, businesses and foundations have reinforced how important a library is to our community and said they want to be a part of it,” said Patti Mitchem, co-chair of the campaign steering committee. Money raised now will provide comfortable seating, computer stations, and study tables, which are the current priorities, she said. tion items, needed to complete the library. As funds come into the campaign, these purchases will be made. With a little over $320,000 left to raise, the Campaign Committee continues to meet with prospective donors interested in having a conversation about how they might best support the library. Many find that a monthly credit card deduction over a few years lets their households give more than they originally thought they could. As the campaign enters the next phase of fundraising in March, several events will offer ways to get involved in the community effort: the Second Annual Diva Night on March 22; a silver/gold tradein on March 30 and 31; an “Ida LeClair” performance by Susan Poulin on May 4; the annual book sale on May 11; the “Blossoms for Books” garden tour July 13; and a Slaid Cleaves concert on July 21. The Friends’ ongoing eBay sale of donated items has raised more than $12,000. Anyone with items to donate should call 3844080. More information about the Capital Campaign is available at www.friendsofsouthberwicklibrary.org

Behind only Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day is the second most popular day to give flowers to a loved one. Thousands upon thousands of roses are imported from areas of South America in time for Valentine’s Day, and the rose has become the unofficial flower of this day. Those who have given a bouquet of roses before understand that roses can be quite expensive. Instead of feeling pressured into giving a dozen longstemmed roses, gift-givers can explore other beautiful flower options available. Red roses may signify love, but just about any other crimsonhued flower can also represent the strong emotions felt for a sweetheart, and at a much more affordable cost. Consider mixing and matching some other flowers with flair and originality. * Dahlias: Named after Anders Dahl, a Swedish botanist, these flowers are native to Mexico but actually prefer cooler growing conditions. Dahlias come in all sizes, from small blooms of a few inches to much larger blossoms that may be a foot in width. They are related to the sunflower, daisy and chrysanthemum. The Dahlia usually is not a scented flower, which may work for people who are especially sensitive to scented blooms. * Chrysanthemums: Also known as mums, chrysanthemums are versatile flowers that

something exists or is true. symbolize optimism, joy, fidelity and love. Although mums are traditionally yellow, they can also be white, red and other hybrid hues. * Peonies: Peonies are herbaceous perennial plants that produce large, often fragrant flowers ranging in color from red to white. Peonies are highly prized by Eastern cultures, and in China they are known as the “flower of riches and honor.” * Carnations: Carnations have the scientific name of Dianthus, which means “flowers of God.” Carnations are particularly coveted because they can last long after being cut, which makes them popular in floral arrangements. Dark red carnations are said to convey affection and deep love. Because of their popularity, carnations are often easily affordable. * Columbine: Columbine is native to North America, Asia and Europe. It has lacy-looking leaves and bell-shaped flowers. While columbines are traditionally used as garden plants to attract hummingbirds, a few blooms added to a floral arrangement can brighten up the design. * Poppies: Low-maintenance and usually easy to grow, poppies’ vivid red color and large blooms add to their aesthetic appeal. * Cardinals: Cardinals are long, tubular flowers that grow wild throughout North America. Tall and dramatic, these red flowers can add drama to any floral arrangement. This article was provided by MetroCreative.
