Angela Pollino
A Touch of Lace
“Twin Towers” with Statue of Liberty,” a lace creation by Ogunquit artist Angela Pollino who won Best of Show a few years after 9/11. This piece took her almost 2 years to finish.
OGUNQUIT Angela Pollino lives in Ogunquit but was born and raised in a small town north of Naples called Isernia. She possesses a very rare talent: she makes Italian lace. Pollino learned this skill starting at the age of eight from some older women in her community who sat in front of their houses working on their lace pieces. The style of lace they taught her is called “Tombolo” also known as bobbin or pillow lace. It is done by crossing and twisting cotton threads that are
wound on wooden bobbins. She fastens the lace design pattern to a firm pillow and secures the lace along the pattern with brass pins. The lace piece is either one continuous work or is made in sections joined together later. One of the pleasures Pollino enjoys most while making lace is the music of the bobbins as they twist, twirl and click together. If she wants to change the tune, she changes the bobbins, each type of wood has its own characteristic sound. The history of “Tombolo” lace is quite interesting. It all
began when the Queen of Spain came to a convent in Isernia for a quiet rest from her duties in Spain. While at the convent she taught the nuns how to make this lace. After her departure the nuns, knowing this was a true art that should be cherished and handed down, recruited young girls and taught them this beautiful handiwork which then became an industry in Italy. Lace became decorations for delicate tablecloths, garments, altar linens, and wedding gowns. These items ended up being sold all over the world! What makes Pollino’s See LACE page 5...

Learn About the Tuskegee Airmen
YORK COUNTY The son of a member of one of the first African American fighter air crews in the US Military will speak about his father’s experiences as a Tuskegee Airman at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, February 8, at Marshwood High School in an event sponsored by the new Tuskegee-South Berwick sister city group. Bob Sheppard of Kittery, the son of one of the famed Tuskegee Airmen, will show his video, “Reflections of Maine’s Tuskegee Airman,
and answer questions about his father and the Airmen. The event will also include a short talk by members of the first South Berwick delegation to travel to Tuskegee, which has been the town’s sister city since last spring. Nicknamed the “Redtails after the color of the tail sections of their planes, the first African-American pilots in the military were admired by bomber crews because of their vow to never abandon or leave unprotected a bomber they were escorting. At the
same time they fought the Nazis in Europe, these airmen were fighting racial oppression at home, and helping to make strides in the civil rights movement. As a child in Harlem building scale models, or watching dirigibles overhead, James Sheppard dreamed of launching a career in aviation. Before WWII, though, politics limited his opportunities. The younger Sheppard will talk about his father’s experiences with segregation on the train ride to Alabama, his training at Tuskegee Institute, and subsequent service with the 332nd Fighter Squadron over-
seas. Returning from Italy, his perseverance led him to positions with Lockheed Aircraft and the Federal Aviation Administration before moving to Maine in the 1970s. In 1997 also at the Big E she won First Prize for an intricate lady’s fan. Her masterpiece (pictured here) of the “Twin Towers” with Statue of Liberty” won Best of Show a few years after 9/11, also in Springfield. This piece took her almost 2 years to finish. All of her pieces are all beautifully framed with different colored backgrounds making these authentic works of art. Some of her work has been displayed in a museum in Italy and at the Laumeier Sculpture Park in St. Louis where she
displayed a lace reindeer. The Sculpture Park used her lace Swan image for the invitation to the exposition. From time to time Pollino gives demonstrations wearing authentic Italian wear, garnered with lace which they wore years ago. When she speaks of her demonstrations she says, “I like to demonstrate my work so people can appreciate and realize all the work that goes into it.” The great news is that this is not a lost art at all. There is a group called New England Lace, where women throughout New England make lace handed down from different countries like Holland, Belgium and England. Angela is the only one who makes “Tombolo” lace. She and all the others in this group have taught others for many years so it’s nice to know it truly has been handed

WHS Music Boosters to Conduct “Winter Weed-Out Collection
WELLS During the whole month of February, the Music Boosters for Wells High School will hold their third annual textile fundraising drive to raise funds for the WHS Music Department and the Epilepsy Foundation of New England. The fundraiser, a “Winter Weed-Out, is a great way for one to make a non-monetary do-
nation to a worthy cause plus do some ‘weeding out’ of their closets. In 2017, the community came out in force donating 24,000 pounds of clothing and other textiles raising $5,000 for the WHS Music Department. The following is a list of what can be accepted for the drive: clothing (gently used or new – without any price tags – is

If you have any of these items and would like to donate them, please bag them up in new garbage bags and deposit them in the designated blue Epilepsy barrels located at Wells Town Hall, the Wells-Ogunquit CSD Superintendent’s office, Wells High School, Wells Junior High School, Wells Elementary School, Matt’s Barbershop in Wells or at the Prime Storage office in Wells during regular business hours. People should note the hours of operation for each of the above lo-
cations. Please do not leave your bags outside any of the donation drop spots. Tax donation receipts and extra bags will be available with these blue barrels. This collection drive also includes a “Stuff-the-District Vanâ€? event and “Personal Pick-Upâ€? on February 17 and 24 from 8 a.m. until noon. Get Cozy with “The French Influence” in Kittery
KITTERY Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra’s Get Cozy with the PSO’s chamber music series continues Sunday, February 11 at
3 p.m. with “The French Influence—From Neoclassical to Impressionist” at The Dance Hall in Kittery. Tickets are $12 in advance or $15 at the door.
This Get Cozy performance will feature chamber music with a french twist by Saint-Saëns, Ravel, and Debussy, among others. In the late 19th Century, the Société Nationale de Musique was formed with the help of composer Camille SaintSaëns with the motto “Ars Gallica” (meaning “French Technique”) in an effort to explore and develop what ultimately became a uniquely french sound. “The French Technique produced haunting, graceful and ethereal music that was very different from its German counterparts of the day. SaintSaëns paved the way for the French composers to follow,” notes Dorothy Braker, Outreach
Coordinator of MyPSO and Get Cozy Series. “However, it was another chamber music society Saint-Saëns formed, ‘La Trompette’—whose name was a joke among his friends—for which his famous septet featuring the trumpet was written.” PSO musicians Adam Gallant, trumpet; Erica Driscoll, harp; Hannah Reitz and Andrea van Oeyen, violin; Autumn Riley, viola; Dorothy Braker, cello; and Joe Annicchiarico, bass, will be joined by Dr. Hsiang Tu on piano. MyPSO violinist Mira Potter-Schwartz will perform Jules Massenet’s “Meditation from Tais” as an opening act. A native of Taipei, Taiwan, pianist Dr. Hsiang Tu is in his second year as the Lecturer in Music (Piano) and Director of the Piano Extension Program at University of New Hampshire. Dr. Tu has performed as a soloist at Jordan Hall and Alice Tully Hall, and as a chamber musician at the Museum of Modern Art and the Joyce Theater in NYC. A prize winner at the New Orleans International Piano Competition, the Iowa International Piano Competition, and the American Pederewski Piano Competition in Los Angeles, he has appeared as a soloist with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Sioux City Symphony Orchestra, Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, the Juilliard School Orchestra, and the Boston University Symphonic Orchestra. Mira Potter-Schwartz is
a senior at Portsmouth High School and is the Principal violin in the Portsmouth High School String Ensemble. This year, she was selected for both the first violin section and as the 3rd chair viola in the 2018 NH All State Orchestra. For the past nine summers, Potter-Schwartz has attended the Ithaca College Suzuki Institute. She has been a member of the Ithaca Advanced Violin Program and Heifetz Program, where she was Principal violist. To view the complete schedule or to purchase tickets, visit www.portsmouthsymphony.org. ...JAZZ from page 9 choral group Seraphic Fire. Klaxton has made a reputation as being a gifted multi-instrumentalist and composer, focusing heavily on jazz trumpet, yet contributing horn, keyboards, guitar and percussion to a variety of award winning hip-hop, rock, and indie projects. A daring group of improvisers, this quintet also delivers lyric, texture, and melody with a keen sensitivity and inviting warmth. With selections ranging from classic jazz standards to the works of Bjork, Paul Simon, Randy Newman, and Elliot Smith, this performance is sure to provide a little (or a lot!) of something for everybody. Music starts at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door and can be purchased at www.thedancehallkittery.org.

Health & Fitness Red Cross Urges Donors to help Replenish Blood Supply this Winter STATEWIDE The American Red Cross continues to have a winter blood donation shortage after severe winter weather in many parts of the country has now forced more than 500 blood drives to cancel, already causing about 15,000 blood and platelet donations to go uncollected through last week. Blood and platelet donors are urgently needed to give now to help restock the shelves. In Maine, 10 blood drives have been forced to cancel due to winter weather this month, causing 273 donations to go uncollected. Donors of all blood types are essential to help maintain an adequate blood supply for patients in their own communities as well as areas where donors are unable to give due to inclement weather. Every day, no matter the weather, the Red Cross must collect
more than 13,000 blood and platelet donations to meet the needs of patients like Finnegan “Finn Olson. Last January, Finn was born with a rare heart condition. He required multiple transfusions before, during and after heart transplant surgery last summer. Transfusions had an almost immediate effect on his personality and skin’s appearance. “Each time Finn received a transfusion, you could see him pink up right away and have significantly more energy, said his mother, Ali Olson. “We credit blood donation with making Finn stronger and helping keep him alive long enough to receive a new heart. Finn is living proof that blood helps save lives. Blood donors, especially those with types O negative, B negative and AB blood, and platelet donors are needed now and throughout the winter months to ensure blood prod-
ucts are readily available for patients 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Make an appointment to give blood by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS

many other industries as well. There is however a long-time activity that can help young women from becoming a victim and that’s babysitting. Most people may dismiss babysitting as just a part-time job for a teen to make a few dollars but with the proper training and experience, a young woman can develop her confidence, a higher level of responsibility, leadership and life-skills that she will use for the rest of her life. Being a babysitter is more than just putting the kids in front of the television and then to bed. A babysitter is responsible for the safety and well-being of another human being. It looks simple because in most cases, nothing goes wrong. The importance of having a properly trained babysitter is evident when something does go wrong. There are hundreds of babysitting courses available across the country. They teach how to properly handle, feed and change babies, how to deal with toddlers and many other situations that can pop up. Many babysitting programs also offer emergency first-aid and CPR courses that could help save a kid’s life. Just like anti-bullying programs, all the speeches, skits and cheers that kids are exposed to are useless unless that person develops their confidence and
has a high level of self-esteem. In most cases, victims have the opposite. The majority of people who complete a babysitting course and learn first-aid and CPR do develop a sense of empowerment. Knowing what to do in the event of an emergency is empowering. Knowing that you can help save someone’s life helps build confidence and although they may not realize it, learning first-aid and CPR also builds and develops their leadership abilities. A young woman with these skills is less likely to be a victim. For parents, having someone watch their kids so that they can leave their home is like having a mini vacation. For many others, a babysitter is needed so that they can go to work to earn money to pay their bills. As long as there are kids, there will always be a need for babysitters. A few of the skills that being a babysitter can develop include: Communication Skills: It is extremely important that the babysitter is able to understand and communicate clearly with the adults as to what needs to be done when they are gone. She must be able to ask questions before the adults leave and must also be able to explain to See BABYSIT page 13...

Health & Fitness CRES Receives National Award from Heart Association Dentists Must Deliver as Patients Demand Restorative Implants and Whiter Teeth The global dental implant and teeth whitening products market are growing as more consumers demand these cosmetic benefits. Dentists must invest in the right dental equipment to be able to offer these services to their patients. As expendable income increases globally, and more people place greater value on their dental health and appearance, international markets for both dental implants and teeth whitening products are growing at a tremendous
rate. By 2024, the worldwide dental implants market is predicted to be valued at $6.81 billion. The global teeth whitening products market is also expected to reach $7.4 billion by 2024. Both markets are blossoming as Americans place greater value on attractive, youthful-looking smiles and are more willing to replace damaged or discolored teeth to achieve this goal. As the market expands, dentists are in a prime position to offer implant and teeth whitening services to patients seeking out these cosmetic benefits. Currently, dental implants are the only tooth restorative devices that preserve bone and
stimulate bone growth. Due to greater awareness of these products, more people are exploring this prosthetic treatment option which allows them to retain as much natural bone structure as possible while enhancing the functionality and appearance of teeth. Zirconia implants, which are corrosive-free, are expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.0% through 2024. Dentists can help ensure that in-demand procedures such as implants and teeth whitening are available at their practices by investing in the proper equipment. Both procedures require the use of specific dental equip-
ment. Dentists without these types of dental products are behind the curve when it comes to providing cosmetic solutions for consumers. Article submit-

the parents if they are not able or comfortable with something they’ve been asked to do. It is also important for her to clearly explain any situations or events that have happened while they were gone. It could be something as simple as an appliance not working or even noticing the kid developing a rash. Parents need to know. It is also just as important for the babysitter to communicate with the kids as well. Just barking orders won’t work but being confident in giving them directions will. Kids will ideally be more cooperative if they feel like they can talk to her. Organizational Skills: A reliable babysitter is organized, prepared and on time. Prior to the job, the babysitter must have everything they need for the time they are there. That may include a change of clothes, a fully charged cell phone and a way to get there on time and a way to get home safely afterwards. The parents may also have a number of tasks for the babysitter to do while they’re gone so it’s important to be able
to do them properly especially when it involves something important such as giving medication. Being organized is important for a successful babysitter. Responsibility: For some teens, this is the first time that they are really in charge of something important. First and foremost, they are responsible for the safety of the kids. The tasks assigned to them by the adults are not always suggestions and must be completed to the best of their abilities. The babysitter must also be responsible enough to tell the parents that they are not confident or even able to do something they are asked to do. It’s important for the babysitter to be honest with the parents and to themselves about her abilities. The babysitter must also check on the kids regularly even after she puts them to bed and be there to help them if they get up in the middle of the night. It may be boring to be sitting in front of the television but a responsible babysitter knows that they are always “on duty” even when the kids are asleep. Problem Solving: You hope

BUSINESS & FINANCE Maine Home Sales and Values Up in 2017
STATEWIDE Despite tight inventory of single-family existing homes for sale at the beginning of 2017, statewide sales volume for the year ended in positive territory, with a 0.72 percent increase. According to Maine Listings, the median sales price (MSP) for homes sold in 2017 reached $200,000, a 5.6 percent increase
in one year. The MSP indicates that half of the homes were sold for more and half sold for less. Statewide sales for the month of December 2017 were up 2.02 percent while the statewide MSP increased 9.19 percent to $202,000 compared to December 2016. “2017 was a year of downs and ups, says Kim Gleason, Broker/Owner of McAllister

BUSINESS & FINANCE $11.6 Million in Unclaimed Cash for Mainers
STATEWIDE The Office of the State Treasurer has received more than $11 million in the form of unclaimed property in the past year, and Mainers are being urged to check whether any of
that cash belongs to them. “Unclaimed property” is money owed to Maine people by third parties, such as former employers, banks or utility companies. Organizations are required to give unclaimed property to the

Kids with confidence are less likely to be bullied and are more likely to succeed at what they do. Young women who have developed a high level of self-esteem are less likely to become a victim of predators as well. There are many other skills that a babysitter can learn but the most important skills they can learn are the ones that will make them a better person as they get older so when you do hire a

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~
Dear Computer Lady, I look forward to your newsletter every week because you make computers simple and understandable. I have a question. I upgraded my computer from Windows 7 to 10 using Microsoft’s free offer. I also updated Windows 10 as the updates became available. Before the upgrade, I had MS office 2013 (I believe) but now because of some update, I have MS Office Professional Plus 10 but when I try to use it, it says that the program is not activated. I never asked for this program and don’t want to pay for a new one as the old program was serving me well. How can I go back to the original MS office program? I don’t know which update created this problem but a problem it is. I hope you have the solution. Thanks, Prem
Dear Prem, I have a couple of things you can try. First, go to the control panel and uninstall Office Professional Plus 10. Restart your computer after you uninstall. If you still have office 2013 installed on your computer, removing the newer version will cause your computer to default back to the older program. If that doesn’t fix the problem, you will probably need to get out your disk for Office 2013 and re-install it. That should fix your problem. Be sure to remove the newer version and restart before installing the older version, otherwise it won’t work. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, In Windows versions previous to 10, I was able to open the Network and Sharing Center then click on an option to see a

Since I live in a densely populated apartment building, I would check the map to see if any of my neighbors had hacked into my wireless network. Would you please tell me how to find a network map in Windows 10? Thank you so much for all the help you have given all your readers over the years. Nancy Dear Nancy, I did a little bit of research and, unfortunately, the network map is not available in Windows 10. There are a couple of companies like Spiceworks and Solarwinds that offer software that monitor networks, but they look like they are made for IT professionals. I did, however find a program called Wireless Network Watcher by NirSoft at: www.nirsoft.net/utils/wireless_network_watcher.html. I have not used this particular

not just a Windows 10 problem, the same thing happens with older versions) and this is what I do. First, I check for hardware issues. Is the hard drive in the process of failing? Is the RAM having issues? If the hardware on your computer passes all the tests, then I look at the age of the computer. Since the average computer lasts about 5 years, is it worth putting several hundred dollars into fixing a 6 year old computer, or would you prefer to put that money toward a new one? I also ask about the speed of the computer. If you are doing video editing and the computer can barely keep up, it makes more sense to invest in a more powerful computer than to fix the inadequate one. No matter what the problem is, I backup my customer’s data to a spare hard drive, then I can restore it after either fixing or replacing the corrupted computer. As long as your computer passes the hardware tests, you don’t need a new hard drive, you just need to get a clean install of Windows 10. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? She was born April 5, 1924, in Salem, MA, to Harold and Alice Edna (Mills) Dawe. Some of her favorite things were listening and dancing to pop and rock music, watching old tv shows, shopping at the Dollar store for gifts for her friends and family, and going out to eat. She loved magazines, balloons, wearing pretty dresses, and getting mail. She was a sweet soul with a fun, quirky sense of humor and almost always had something nice to say, freely complimenting everyone she met wherever she went. Denise was predeceased by her brother Glen Dusseault in 2006. She is survived by her parents and four sisters; Norma Bee and her husband Herb of Wells and Florida, Joan Nixon of Wells, Brenda Dusseault of Raleigh, NC, and Annie Reed and her husband Spencer of Arundel; nieces and nephews Dara, Aaron, April, Nate, Jay, Jacob, Holly, and Halle; several grandnieces, an uncle and two aunts, and many cousins. She will also be missed by an extended network of special friends and loved ones who lived with and cared for her over the years, and her family would especially like to acknowledge Denise’s (and our) favorite “sister-momsâ€? Deanna and Jennifer Wickes. The family also thanks the staff at Gosnell Hospice House for the exemplary loving care given Denise in her last month.

GREEN MANURE
Thursday, March 29, 2018 I 10:30 AM ƚůĂŶƟĐ ĞƐŝŐŶ ĞŶƚĞƌ (in the Eldredge Building) 627 US Route 1 I York, Maine As part of Eldredge Lumber mission we like to bring information that will maximize our Customers’ knowledge and appreciation of organic products and techniques.
In his presentation today Will Bonsall will teach us how home-made compost and green manures can reduce or avoid reliance on off-site inputs and how composting minimizes our contribution to landfills. Will is questioning why we are importing soil fertility from somewhere else when our garden and its immediate surroundings can produce the ingredients for maintaining its own tilth?
Our speaker, Will Bonsall, will do just that. He is the director of the Scatterseed Project and is best known for his work in preserving crop diversity. He lives on Khadighar Farm in Industry, Me. His past occupations are as varied as his seed collection and include draftsman, prospector, hobo, gravedigger, logger, musician, language teacher, and artist among others. He also has a degree in anthropology. In addition to farming and seed saving, Will is an author and his works include Through the Eyes of a Stranger and Will Bonsall’s Guide to Radical, Self-Reliant Gardening.
Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from Will Bonsall’s experience in running his own sustainable farm for over 40 years. Will also has a reputation of being an entertaining speaker. Please join us by making reservations

Safe Haven Animal Recue
WELLS Honey is a black and white powder puff of a kitty. Silly, playful and active, she likes to lay on her side and wiggle her body closer and closer to you. After you give her an ear rub, she rolls over and rabbit-kicks her toys. She’s in a perpetual state of joy. Honey enjoys attention and will be a joyful family member and a constant source of hilarity with her silly antics. This longhaired spitfire is young, healthy and gets along well with other kitties. She’ll surely win your heart the minute you meet her at our adoption center, 1420 Post Road, Wells. Open 11 a.m. - 4 p.m., Tuesday-Saturday (207-646-1611). We need more temporary foster homes, where new arrivals can live while they adapt to their new circumstances. We need more shelter volunteers to provide hands-on cat care, as well as supplies like small fleece blankets which our guests love to lounge on. Canned cat food is always needed, especially Friskies brand, preferably poultry flavors. We also need canned and dry Purina kitten food and Temptations treats. Thanks to all of you for your help. Our thrift shop is having a huge winter clothing and boot sale during February. We appreciate all donations, but we just don’t have the space or personnel to accept more than a few bags from each
person. We were recently overwhelmed by the unannounced arrival of an entire U-Haul full, which clogged our aisles and hindered shopping for days. Also some people leave donations outside our door when we’re closed. Please don’t! We are very selective about donations, and only accept/ sell what is in excellent condition, lovely, fun, useful or wearable. If you have a large donation, please call 207-229-8314 in advance to discuss arrangements. Again, we do appreciate your donations!
The vet noted that all of the kittens will need eye operations on one or both eyes and some may have long term eye issues that we nor our service can predict the final outcome. Most of these surrenders are also dealing with severe upper respiratory issues and who knows what else. They are all very sweet, feisty, lovable kitties that we’re committed to do whatever is needed for them! What we truly need is: financial assistance to cover the burdening vet costs, which is looking to be in the thousands, and volunteers to come on a daily basis to help with the hand feedings of some many tiny kittens. Any day is great to relieve our staff volunteers in dealing with the new arriv-
als that are requiring so much time to get them well while still caring for our healthy kitties seeking their forever homes. Donations can be mailed to either Another Chance Animal Rescue, PO Box 552, North Berwick, ME 03906 or via our PayPal using boomeredgewater@gmail.com and the “friends & family payment option to ensure no fees are taken out. Contact Marilyn at 207-490-2855 or Amanda at 603-205-3615 if you are able and willing to volunteer at our 251 Country Club Road, Sanford, Adoption Facility.

NORTH BERWICK A plea for help! We recently received a call from a family, trying desperately to care for a bunch of stray cats. This situation rapidly became overwhelming because of the cost of necessary vet services to vaccinate and alter their new arrivals. In absolute desperation the family reached out to a few organizations and vets, but realized too late how it was still too expensive on their very limited income. The family reached out to ACAR and when we heard what was happening and realized just how many cats and kittens were involved, we had no choice but to step in. These kitties needed more than this well-intended family can possibly give, so all the kittens and cats have been surrendered to us to ensure they get the care they need as well as homes too.

Voice for Animals YORK Shadow is still a kitten at 10-months old and got his name because he will follow you like a little shadow. Intelligent and intuitive, this sweet boy shows great promise to be that special cat in your life. In fact his foster mom says that his sweetness is intoxicating! He has double paws and a white tip on his tail, giving him a unique look. He plays well with older children and would get along with a laidback cat. He is nervous around dogs. He loves to play and interact with people. His deep amber eyes are stunning against his black and white tuxedo. Shadow is neutered and litterbox trained, and a more clean and fastidious cat would be hard to find. If you would like more information on Shadow, please contact Voice for Animals at in2catz@gmail.com.

SPORTS Did You Know About Super Bowl? While Super Bowl LI, which was played at NRG Stadium in Houston, TX, on February 5, 2017, featured a thrilling come-from-behind victory by the New England Patriots over the Atlanta Falcons, the very first Super Bowl, played on January 15, 1967, provided no such intrigue. A 35-10 victory by the Green Bay Packers over the Kansas City Chiefs, the AFLNFL World Championship Game (the game would only retroactively be known as Ă’Super Bowl IĂ“) was played at the Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles. The game was tightly played in the first half, with Green Bay holding a 14-10 lead at halftime. But the Packers, coached by legendary head coach Vince
Lombardi, pulled away in the third quarter, scoring two touchdowns, while ultimately holding the Chiefs scoreless in the second half. The game was played in front of slightly less than 62,000 people (roughly 33,000 seats went unsold), and estimates suggest as many as 75 million American viewers watched the game on television. Nielsen reported that more than 111 million Americans watched Super Bowl LI in 2017, and estimates suggest roughly 50 million more people watched the game across the globe. Television ads might not have garnered the attention or generated as much talk around the office water cooler in 1967 as they do today, and they also did not cost nearly as much, either.
GWRLT 2018 Winter Outings YORK COUNTY Great Works Regional Land Trust (GWRLT) is excited and ready to take you out on the trails with Old Berwick Historical Society (OBHS). Together, they will be offering three history hikes throughout the year, the first of which will be Saturday, February 10, 10-11:30 a.m. at the Raymond & Simone Savage Wildlife Preserve, South Berwick. Anthropologist Meghan The cost of a 30-second commercial during the first Super Bowl in 1967 cost advertisers $42,000, while such an ad cost advertisers just over $5 million in 2017. The Sentinel does not endorse any products or services suggested by third-party sources.

Howey will discuss the role the river landscape played in Native American lifestyles. Participants will appreciate the diversity of this 26-acre preserve on the Salmon Falls River, located at 15 Dover-Eliot Road. Begin February with a cross-country ski at Back Fields Farm in Eliot on Saturday, February 3, 10 a.m. - noon. Jay and Michele Meyer have created a trail system through their fields and woods. Experience is required as the terrain is hilly. Our ÒWednesday WanderingÓ for the month of February is a cross-country ski at Desrochers Memorial Forest, Wednesday, February 7, 10 a.m. - noon. Located next to South Berwick Town Forest off Knights Pond Road, Desrochers Memorial Forest features a recently improved trail system with sections along an old woods road and along the Great Works River, perfect for skiing. On Saturday, February 17, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m., the winter excursion will be at Orris Falls Conservation Area, Thurrell Road in South Berwick. Weather permitting, the beaver marsh will be frozen solid so hikers can enjoy the open views that are obscured in warmer weather. Expect to
visit the Big Bump, Orris Falls, and BakerĂ•s Oven, some of the Ă’Wonders of Tatnic.Ă“ As time and interest allow, the tour may extend to Balancing Rock and Tatnic Ledges. Fingers are crossed that conditions will be good for a Beaver Dam Heath ski/snowshoe on Saturday, February 24, 10 a.m. - noon. Winter is really the only time to venture into the wetlands and the Heath. The hike will start from GrantĂ•s Meadow Preserve in the forested uplands of the Heath, which boasts a ž mile loop trail, accessible year-round. The parking lot is on Diamond Hill Road, just south of Old Sanford Road in Berwick. The winter hike season will finish with a Ă’Wednesday WanderingĂ“ snowshoe hike up Bauneg Beg Mountain in North Berwick on March 7, 9-11 a.m. Enjoy views from of the White Mountains to the west and the Cape Elizabeth Light to the northeast. Space on hikes is limited to 25 people so reservations are required. Call 207-646-3604 or email info@gwrlt.org to reserve your place. All hikes are free of charge to Land Trust members. Wildlife Preserve, as Professor Meghan Howey explores what it was like to be situated in this conflicted frontier setting. During the late 1600s, the Piscataqua region saw several attacks on colonial settlements. The French and British each made alliances and treaties with American Indians as they battled for control of the region. Indigenous communities were powerful entities in this frontier setting. Over the course of this hike, on land where a Garrison is reported to have once stood nearby, Howey will discuss ways early colonial settlers managed their lives in this landscape, including through the building and use of garrisons.
