Students were challenged with the question: “What is a safe place to keep your money? There were a variety of responses and these tied in nicely with St. Clair and Richardson’s presentation of a story about a boy named Sam. Sam earned money by cleaning his room and looked for a safe place to put it. His first idea was in his pocket. But that money fell out when he went climbing trees with his friends. Next he stuck his money in a hole in a tree. That money was carried away by a bird that used

Inspired, Sam took his money, put it in a metal box and buried it in the backyard. But when he wanted to use it, he dug a hole – and no box! He dug another hole, and another. Still no box! He kept digging, but never found the box. Kennebunk Honors Engineering Class Uses STEM Knowledge to Invent

By Carin Lee, Staff Reporter KENNEBUNK Students in Al Carp’s Honors Engineering class at Kennebunk High School are busy inventing. “It’s crazy stuff, says Carp, and indeed, making a hover board, a catapult or a remote-controlled hot air balloon is something we can dream about, but rarely do - especially as part of a school program. But all these things are being created in the classroom demanding significant academic challenges. Students in Honors Engineering must first design their inventions on computer, using Computer-Aided Design (CAD). This allows them to learn this software program. Then they make models to the specifications of those designs on a 3-D printer. Finally, students build with these and parts they purchase, requiring that they learn to solder, connect electronics and so on. Students use their knowledge of science, technology, engineering

and math (STEM) during this process. Carp also gives the students criteria they have to meet with their inventions: The final product must be: battery powered, remotely controlled using a small programmable circuit board, weigh under 10 pounds, cost less than $250, use a 3-D printer to create a major part, use an electric component that will move things and not be harmful to the environment. This writer got to see many projects that met those criteria and are nearing their completion. The first was a hover board. This craft uses propellers as fans to keep it off the ground and move it forward. It has remotely controlled fins in the back to provide direction. The next project encountered was a submarine that included a camera. When it is submersed in water it will film whatever it “sees and let people watch this through a live feed. One group of students made a duck boat. The rear-end

propellers are high enough off the ground so they will be not be used when the craft is driven on land, yet spin and propel the vehicle forward when it rolls down into the water. There was a catapult on wheels, which launches little plastic balls a quarter of an inch in diameter. A motor pulls back the arm of the catapult, a ball drops into the “spoon attached to the arm, and the arm is released, launching the ball into flight. The builders of the catapult commented, “We learned from our mistakes and we made plenty of them. We just kept on expecting good things. Our project is what you would expect two 17-year old boys to make. One group of students made a hot air balloon, 9 feet in diameter. Attached was a propane tank to heat the air and give it lift. Fans pushed the balloon and basket in the direction desired. Finally, there was a “screw car. This consists of 2 large screws, each one foot long, with an attached platform and cab. When the motor turns the screws, the screws automatically wind their way forward, as they would if they were being powered by a human being applying pressure. The winding causes forward motion.

Engineering students show off their inventions at Kennebunk High School.

Carp, who saw his program grow from one class of 22 last year to two classes of 20 this year, describes himself as more of a coach than a teacher. “I have to hang back, let them do their own problem solving. And they do it. In the final week of the se-

WHS Cuts Ribbon to Open Up Portion of Renovation

WELLS – On January 14, Wells High School (WHS) celebrated the completion of Phase 1 of a threephased renovation project. This

school, lobby, main office, adjacent offices, classrooms, conference rooms, science and media labs, glassed-in library and common areas for study. "The ribbon cutting was symbolic of the Wells-Ogunquit community coming together for our children, commented WOCSD School Committee Chair, Helena Ackerson about the event. “It also showed the dedication and emphasis that this community has on ensuring that our students get the best when it comes to education and facilities. There is still a lot of work ahead, but I'm excited to see what the next phase brings!" Phase 2 and 3 will include a new cafeteria and kitchen plus a gymnasium complete with running track and a 485-seat auditorium. According to Clerk of the

U.S. Average Gas Prices Under $2 for 25 Days and Counting Gas prices have spent 25 consecutive days below $2 per gallon and could head lower still as reduced seasonal demand and falling crude oil costs combine to send pump prices to the lowest mark in six years. The recent average price of $1.83 per gallon is the cheapest price since January 2009, and retail averages have fallen for 69 of the past 80 days for a total savings of 40 cents per gallon over this span. Crude oil supply continues to outpace demand, which has helped push gas prices down by seven cents on the week, 18 cents on the month and 21 cents on the year. Here is a look at recent local gas prices: Vermont’s current price is $2.00 per gallon, which is five

cents lower than one week ago, and 36 cents lower than one year ago. New Hampshire’s current price is $1.86 per gallon, which is five cents lower than one week ago and 21 cents lower than one year ago. Maine’s current price is $1.93 per gallon, which is four cents lower than one week ago and 21 cents lower than one year ago. Massachusetts current price is $1.90 per gallon, which is five cents lower than one week ago and 23 cents lower than one year ago A historic blizzard hit the Northeast over the weekend. The Mid-Atlantic was the hardest region hit, and a number of states in the area received more than two feet of snow. Severe

weather can make it difficult for refiners to produce gasoline and can create hurdles for getting the product to market. However, storms also keep drivers off of roads, which can limit demand. Early reports indicate that PBF Energy shut down its Delaware City refinery, citing power failure due to the blizzard conditions. Averages in the region could possibly move higher in the coming days if refinery and distribution problems persist. Motorists in just 11states and Washington, D.C. are paying an average above $2 per gallon. California ($2.67) continues to lead the market, however the resolution of refinery issues in the state has narrowed the difference between the Golden State and second-place Hawaii ($2.63). Regional neighbors Alaska ($2.44),

Nevada ($2.34) and Washington ($2.24) round out the top five most expensive markets for retail gasoline. Consumers in Oklahoma ($1.53) and Missouri ($1.54) are paying the nation’s lowest averages at the pump, followed by the Midwestern states of Indiana ($1.55), Ohio ($1.56) and Michigan ($1.59). Global oversupply and the anticipation that additional oil will soon enter the market with the lifting of sanctions on Iran, contributed to both benchmarks—Brent and West Texas Intermediate—trading last week at lows unseen since 2003. Market fundamentals remain unchanged and a “lower-forlonger sentiment is beginning to prevail amongst speculators.

Talks are now shifting to whether the market has reached its bottom and if, or when, the necessary adjustments in supply will occur in order to help bring the crude oil market more into balance. To the surprise of many and despite this bearish sentiment, both benchmarks closed out the week with a two-day rally. This shift is likely the result of trading volatility and is not attributed to any correction in the imbalance between supply and demand. At the close of Friday’s formal trading session on the NYMEX, WTI was up nearly 9.5 percent, with a gain of $2.66 to settle at $32.19 per barrel. Learn more at AAA.com/mobile.

Financial issues are among the top causes of breakups or divorce, yet it’s not always a lack of money that leads to friction. The problem is often the result of financial incompatibility among people who enter romantic relationships with different habits, viewpoints and long-term goals. “It’s very common for both partners to bring debts and assets into a relationship as well as completely different spending and saving habits, said Mike Sullivan, spokesperson, Take Charge America, a national nonprofit credit counseling and debt management agency. “Even if they’re compatible in every other way,

money truly can ruin romantic relationships. Fortunately, most couples can resolve their challenges by communicating, negotiating and making a point of addressing their finances in a direct and meaningful way. Sullivan offers the following five tips to couples: Communication: Many couples simply don’t address the topic of money. Communication is an important part of every relationship, and this is certainly the case with money. Couples should consider holding a regular money meeting, whether quarterly, monthly or even weekly, to ensure they’re on the same page, set a budget and define long-term goals. Negotiation: This tip, too, applies to all aspects of a relationship, but it’s critically important for couples to understand one another’s spending styles and negotiate as needed. Perhaps he was born with a silver spoon, while she held multiple jobs from a young age. Whatever the case, couples must understand each other’s upbringing, strengths and weaknesses, and negotiate the way they handle their money. Rules and freedoms: To mitigate issues caused by differences in financial styles, it’s important to create guidelines on spending limits, agree on savings goals, and work together to pay off debt. Some couples have full freedom to spend – up to a certain dollar amount – while others commit to paying down student loans or saving 10 to 15 percent of their monthly income. See COUPLES page 30...

BUSINESS & FINANCE Social Security Celebrates Black History Month Throughout the month of February, we celebrate Black History Month. Created in 1926, this event coincides with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln on February 12 and Frederick Douglass on February 14. African American communities have celebrated these birthdays together since the late 19th century. Honoring our shared history and reflecting on the past is one way we unify as a nation. We remember that we are all Americans — we believe in freedom and democracy for all. Another shared belief is that we all deserve a comfortable retirement, free of economic hardship. Social Security has retirement benefits and the tools to help you plan for your retirement and to apply for benefits online. We also provide disability benefits to individuals with medical conditions that

prevent them from working. If the disabled individual has dependent family members, they can also receive payments. If you or anyone you know is disabled, they may qualify for disability benefits. Studies show that a 20-year-old worker has a 1-in-4 chance of becoming disabled before reaching full retirement age. You can see if you meet our strict definition of disabled and also apply for disability benefits at www. socialsecurity.gov/disabilityssi/ apply.html. Widows, widowers, and their dependent children may be eligible for Social Security survivors’ benefits. Social Security helps by providing income for the families of workers who die. In fact, 98 of every 100 children could get benefits if a working parent dies. And Social Security pays more benefits to children than any other federal program. You can learn more

about Social Security survivors’ benefits at www.socialsecurity. gov/survivors. Honoring each other begins with fair and equal treatment. Social Security guarantees that, if you pay into the system, you will have the same benefits as everyone else. This Black History Month, we want to make sure our diverse nation is covered and that no one is left out of the benefits they deserve. Visit www.socialsecurity.gov to learn more. ...MONEY from page 1 talked about the wisdom of saving money in the bank for important things. This was the first exposure that Burnell’s first graders had about money. Burnell said, “In grade one, financial literacy’ means that students will begin to develop an understanding of money and the role it plays in the real world. And it is never too early to develop good saving habits. Each grade at Eliot Elementary, through the school’s Everyday Math program, is learning about what money is, where it comes from, and how it works. First graders will learn about and practice with currency. People’s United Band program, through its Financial Outreach, will be returning to visit the students in first grade later this year for a follow up presentation. There will be further focus on spending habits in that session. Says

Burnell, “The presentations on spending and saving pair well with our everyday math curriculum in that it provides an opportunity for students to turn academic activities into real world experiences. We believe this will strengthen both the students’ work in the classroom and develop a foundation for their financial responsibility. Some students’ responses to the session with St. Clair and Richardson were varied: “My parents pay me when I feed my dog; “I have a special piggy bank; “Now I can think harder about where to put my money.

York Hospital: First in the Seacoast Area to Offer Robot-Assisted Partial Knee Replacements YORK – York Hospital and Dr. Akhilesh Sastry of Atlantic Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine has announced they are now offering robot-assisted partial knee replacement; a minimally invasive treatment option for adults living with early to midstage osteoarthritis that has not yet progressed to all three compartments of the knee. This provides a less invasive option than traditional total knee surgery and is performed using a highly advanced, surgeon controlled robotic arm system (RIO). York Hospital and Dr. Sastry are the first to acquire and practice this technology in Maine and New Hampshire. Using robot-assisted surgery for partial knee procedures, Dr. Sastry and the York Hospital Surgery Center offer

the potential for the following benefits, as compared with total knee surgery: Reduced pain; Minimal hospitalization; Faster recovery; Less implant wear and loosening; Smaller scar; Better motion and a more natural feeling knee. “Robotic assisted knee surgery allows us to treat patients with knee osteoarthritis with greater precision than ever possible. Because it is less invasive and preserves more of the patient’s natural knee anatomy, the goal for patients is not only to have relief from their pain but also to gain back knee motion, and return to their daily activities at an earlier interval, said Dr. Akhil Sastry. The robotic system enables the surgeon to complete a customized patient specific pre-surgical plan that details the technique for implant positioning using a CT scan of the patient’s own knee. During the procedure, the system creates a three-dimensional, virtual view and correlates the image to the pre-programmed surgical plan. As the surgeon uses the robotic arm, its tactile, auditory and visual feedback isolates the dis-

eased areas, providing real time adjustments and optimal implant positioning for each individual patient. “Precision is key in planning and performing partial knee surgeries, said Dr. Sastry. “For a good outcome you need to align and position the implants just right. Precision in surgery, and in the pre-operative planning process, is what York Hospital’s new robotic system

can deliver, for each individual patient. York Hospital's surgery center mixes advanced technology with personalized care in a comfortable and caring environment. The center is equipped with five surgical suites staffed by a dedicated and highly trained team of specialists that care for patients preoperatively, during surgery and in recovery. The center is well-equipped with

the latest advances in technology and instrumentation for the more than 6,500 surgical procedures annually. Maine’s Low-Income Seniors Struggle to Meet Basic Needs STATEWIDE A newly released report commissioned by the John T. Gorman Foundation sheds light on the challenges facing Maine's seniors and has led the Foundation to commit substantial resources to organizations supporting critical needs among older Mainers. The report, A Portrait of Wellbeing: The Status of Seniors in Maine, was authored by researchers at the University of New Hampshire's Carsey School of Public Policy, who highlight economic, housing and social factors across 10 regions within the state. Among the publication's findings: Maine has a higher percentage of seniors with low incomes than neighboring states: 29 percent compared to 21.1

percent in New Hampshire and 23.5 percent in Vermont. Seniors living in southeast Cumberland County are more likely to be poor or low-income when compared to those living in other areas of the state. Seniors in Oxford, Somerset, Franklin, and Piscataquis counties, as well as southeast Cumberland County, are more likely to live alone. Half of Maine's senior renters live in homes where more than 30 percent of total household income is spent on housing costs. Across the state, low-income seniors consistently fare worse than their higher-income peers on indicators of well-being: they are more likely be burdened by housing costs, whether they rent or own, are less likely to be married, and are three times more likely to live alone.

"This report includes important benchmarks related to the wellbeing of seniors in Maine," said Beth Mattingly, Director of Research on Vulnerable Families at the Carsey School of Public Policy and a co-author of the report. "As the state's population continues to age, these figures can be used to identify trends and to analyze policy implications." Maine has the highest median age of any state in the country, and the third highest percentage of people aged 65 and older. To supplement their current senior-related investments, the John T. Gorman Foundation commissioned the research to help further inform its efforts and those of others who are working to help more Maine seniors age in place. In response to the report, the Foundation has

dedicated $900,000 over two years to organizations providing critical programs and services to disadvantaged seniors across the state. The grant recipients provide services in four key areas that contribute to the wellbeing of Maine's seniors: food insecurity, transportation, home repair and companionship. "The data in this new report confirm what folks working on this issue have long believed: that far too many of

Maine's seniors face some very challenging issues," explained Tony Cipollone, president and CEO of the John T. Gorman Foundation. "We wanted to respond appropriately to help address some of these issues, and believe that supporting nonprofits that have a deep understanding of seniors' needs in our state is the best way to do so." SMHC Receives $50,000 Grant towards Fight Against Childhood Obesity through Let’s Go! 5-2-1-0 STATEWIDE Southern Maine Health Care (SMHC), a member of MaineHealth, recently accepted a grant of $50,000 from MaineHealth to continue implementation of Let’s Go! 5-2-1-0 as part of its mission to keep our communities healthy. SMHC is working with the Let’s Go! 5-2-1-0 program to combat the childhood obesity epidemic, a serious challenge in our society that can set children up for a lifetime of chronic health issues. These funds will support Let’s Go! York County’s prevention efforts in communities throughout York County, from Saco to Acton to Kittery. According to a 2015 health survey conducted by

the Maine Department of Education and Maine Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), 40.7 percent of Maine’s 5th and 6th graders are overweight or obese. Obesity is also one of six key priorities tracked through the MaineHealth Health Index Initiative, which measures progress in improving the health status of the people who reside in the MaineHealth service area. As a Community Health Improvement program within MaineHealth, Let’s Go! serves as a critical clinical and community strategy to address this important issue. Southern Maine Health Care and Partners for Healthier Communities (PHC), a Healthy Maine Partnership and a program of SMHC, are proud to be

working in collaboration with United Way of York County, the Coastal Healthy Communities Coalition (CHCC) at University of New England, Choose to Be Healthy Coalition at York Hospital, and the York District Public Health Coordinating Council as part of the movement for a healthier Maine. These partnerships involve supporting schools and early childhood education programs to offer healthy food and beverage options, provide opportunities to get physically

active every day, and to limit recreational screen time. Let’s Go! 5-2-1-0 is a nationally recognized childhood obesity prevention program. The goal of Let’s Go! is to increase physical activity and healthy eating for children from birth to 18 years of age through policy and environmental change. Let’s Go! works in six sectors to reach families where they live, study, work and play to reinforce the importance of healthy eating and getting physi-

Health & Fitness Grant Facilitates Cancer Research Collaboration in Maine Cancer researchers will have easier access to biological samples used to conduct leading-edge research that may lead to new cancer treatments thanks to a Maine Cancer Foundation grant that will enhance collaboration between Maine Medical Center Research Institute (MMCRI) and Eastern Maine Medical Center (EMMC) Cancer Care. Each organization will receive $200,000 to improve their biorepositories (also known as Biobanks), which are programs that distribute biospecimens (patient tissue samples) to researchers. These awards also fund a new web portal that streamlines the process researchers use to request and acquire samples. "A big challenge in medical research is to expand capacity without duplicating effort, said Tara Hill, Executive Director, Maine Cancer Foundation. “By providing these grant awards, the biorepositories at both EMMC Cancer Care and MMCRI will be able to improve their service to cancer researchers, and focus on getting the right biospecimen samples to the right people as quickly as possible. That's progress." Earlier in 2015, MCF received separate proposals from Maine’s two largest hospitals to expand their biorepositories. MCF awarded a grant to each organization to support development of a collaborative model that draws on the unique strengths of each biorepository, and ultimately boosts support to Maine-based cancer researchers. The new web portal provides access to the specimens at both biorepositories, consultation services to researchers, and a streamlined ordering process. The grants fund im-

provements to each biorepository including equipment upgrades, software for inventory management, and additional staffing to support the activities of the web portal. “A new era has begun in cancer research said Jens Rueter, MD, Medical Director, EMMC BioBank and the organization’s Principal Investigator for the grant. “We can now use cancerous tissue to conduct groundbreaking research, and because of the promise this type of research holds, EMMC Cancer Care’s program has grown rapidly and now collects blood and bone marrow samples. With this grant, we will be able to expand the network of researchers we work with and ensure our biorepository has a diverse collection of samples from across the state. Also, it is exciting that we are participating in building a better and collaborative research infrastructure for cancer research in Maine. Collaborations are critical for the success of research projects, especially in times of decreasing funding opportunities. The MMC BioBank has been providing solid tissue biospecimens for cancer research both locally and nationally for over 10 years. “Emerging technologies, such as the ability to isolate and characterize tumor cells in blood, have led to an increased need for liquid biospecimens in

Boosting Investment in Alzheimer’s Research More than 5 million Americans, including 37,000 people right here in Maine, suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s is also one of our nation’s leading causes of death, with recent data revealing that each year more than 500,000 deaths are attributable to Alzheimer’s and other dementias – six times the amount previously estimated. Alzheimer’s is the only one of our nation’s deadliest diseases without an effective means of prevention, treat-

addition to solid tissue samples for cancer research, said Anne Breggia, Ph.D., Director of the MMC BioBank and the organization’s Principal Investigator for the grant. “The MCF grant enables the MMC Biorepository to put the necessary infrastructure in place to better collect liquid samples such as blood, bone marrow, and body fluids. This will both help advance scientific discoveries and provide the opportunity for more patients in our region to donate critically needed samples for research, and thus make important contributions to the fight against cancer.“ The MCF grant was made possible by the generous estate gift of Jay and Ann Hayes of Bangor. The Hayes’ special gift supports cancer research in the state of Maine. For more information: Maine Cancer Foundation, 207-773-2533.

ment, or a cure. In addition to the human suffering it causes, Alzheimer’s is our nation’s most expensive disease, costing the United States more than $226 billion a year, including $153 billion in costs to Medicare and Medicaid. These costs will skyrocket as the baby boom generation ages. Virtually every family in the United States has been touched by Alzheimer’s. Combating this terrible disease requires a unified national effort that transcends politics. At a time when the United States is spending more than $200 billion a year to care for Alzheimer’s patients, we are spending just four percent of that amount on research. Although the Administration and Congress have made some progress in increasing funding, Alzheimer’s research funding remains disproportionately low compared to its human and economic toll. Indeed, similarly deadly diseases receive annual funding of $2 billion, $3 billion, and even $5.6 billion for research, which has paid dividends.

Investments in research for other diseases have yielded tremendous results: patients have access to new treatments, and death rates for some diseases are decreasing. Yet, at the same time, mortality due to Alzheimer’s is escalating dramatically. Fortunately, there is promising research that holds hope for Alzheimer’s patients and their families. The research community is poised to make important advances through clinical trials and investigating new therapeutic targets, but adequate funding is critical to advance this research. Surely, we can do more for Alzheimer’s given the tremendous human and economic price of this devastating disease. I look forward to working with the Administration to support efforts to meet the goal of preventing and effectively treating Alzheimer's by 2025. ~ Pets ~ Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS Meet Jenny (and sibling Mickey), beautiful gray shorthair kitties who need a home they can share together. Born to a feral kitty, Ellie, who has since been tamed and adopted, they learned fear and wariness from their mom. But over time, they have come far. Now these 2-1/2 year olds are playful, sweet and want to interact. They love feather toys and kitty games and the company of people. They’re still a little shy, but in the right home, they’ll blossom into total love bugs. The ideal home is quiet, with people who’ll include them in their daily routine, and make time for interactive play so they continue their social growth. Jenny and Mickey are lovely and are available in our Together for Life Program. We waive one adoption fee so both can go home together. Please call Joyce at 207-229-8314 for more info. Safe Haven’s new Cat Socializing Team has seven new members, and we’d love more of you to spare two hours a week and help turn shy kitties into confident, adoptable ones. We supply the training, treats, toys and a blanket to sit on. You supply the love, patience, and creative thinking. You’ll love the fun and emotional reward of seeing traumatized or feral kitties turn into an interactive, happy ones. We need as many socializers as possible, so that every kitty gets enough attention to move up the socializing ladder. Please volunteer! In the Scardey Cat School at our thrift store, four new arrivals are at the beginner level. Shy and fearful, they hide all day and only come out at night. When volunteers arrive in the morning, their classroom is a sight! Blankets are everywhere, bowls are empty and overturned, toys are scattered and litter boxes filled. This is typical of feral kitties, who are normally active at night. And boy, are these guys active! While the store is open, we use battery-operated toys to tempt them to come out and play. Getting them comfortable with people in the store is a start. Several times a day, we go inside their enclosure and talk quietly to them, to avoid startling them. Then we slowly reach under the blanket where they’re hiding, massage them, talk to them, and place treats by their noses. Then we thank them, and gently cover them back up so they remain hidden. This is how

they learn that we respect and love them, and they’ll always be cared for. Eventually, it clicks. They understand. And they start to peek out and join us! Visitors often remark how clean and cheerful the Safe Haven Adoption Center is. That’s because of our wonderful Cat Care team. They’re devoted to our cats’ health and happiness, by making sure their environment is spotless at all times. We always need more helpers.

Call Leonore at 207-985-3227 or apply online at www.safehavenhumanesociety.org. To those who have been following Mooglie and Little Man and their new mom Betsy, 14 year-old Mooglie has become very kitten-like, due to her joy of finally being in a home of her own with her BFF Little Man. He, too, is enjoying the comforts of being loved and part of a forever family. Betsy is also delighted to have these two in her life!

Another Chance Animal Rescue NORTH BERWICK – Meet Curtis, a teenage kitten that arrived with a group of kittens rescued from a very high kill shelter. This shelter contacted dozens of Northern rescues and shelters to try and save as many of their healthy kittens and younger cats as possible. Curtis is a gentle, very loving, playful boy. He is neutered, vaccinations are current and has passed his wellness exam. This handsome blue and white kitten will do well with all members of the family including non-aggressive dogs and well behaved house cats. Curtis has never been exposed to an outdoor life style and has absolutely no outside survival skills. He will be looking for a loving family that will be able to provide an indoor only home for his safety. If you are thinking

about adding a truly nice kitten to your family circle, Curtis would so like to apply for that opening. Curtis can be visited at our Sanford Adoption Center located at: 251 Country Club (Rt. 4) Sanford. ACAR still has a very limited number of teenage kittens, a small number of young adult cats and a good number of older adult cats all looking to you for new loving homes. We also have a small number of young healthy dogs looking for new families that will provide a loving home for your new family member. WEST KENNEBUNK – The Tale of Madeline: Madeline is an Animal Welfare Society alum, though things have changed quite a bit since she was last with us. Madeline was originally adopted from us way back in 1999. She spent 16 years being loved and adored in a wonderful home. Unfortunately her owner can no longer care for her, so at 17 years of age, Madeline has found her way back to us. Having survived Y2K, watching the dot com bubbles burst, and witnessing the rise of reality TV, this old lady has been through a lot. Understandably, she likes taking it easy these days. She can often be found napping in a comfy bed or in a secluded locale. She enjoys getting attention from her people, though she'd prefer it not be of

the "in her face" variety. This lovely lady deserves a new home to enjoy her golden years in, and we're confident she'll be successful in accomplishing that goal once again.

Top 5 Pet New Year’s Resolutions The New Year is upon us. It's time to take a look back on the past year and determine what we might want to change, do better or accomplish in 2016. For pet parents, much of this reflection applies to the lives they share with their pets. TripsWithPets.com surveyed pet parents and asked them what resolutions they've made for 2016 relating to their pets. Here are the top five 2016 Pet New Year's Resolutions. 1 - Healthier Diet: Feeding their pets better quality food is at the top of pet parents list this year! They've been doing their research and want to do all they can to ensure their little ones Much Needed: We are in serious need of good dry dog food and wet cat food. If you can spare a bag or can for our foster dogs and cats, please drop off at Another Chance Thrift Shop on Market St. or call 207-6765599 for someone to pick it up. Thanks!

live a long, happy and healthy life. Whether it's gluten-free, grain-free, dairy-free, soy-free, corn-free, raw food, unprocessed food, or probiotics - pet parents are coming for you in 2016! 2 - Daily Walks: Whether it's a walk through the park, a stroll around the neighborhood or a jog along hiking trails, 26 percent of pet parents surveyed plan to get outside each day and move with their pets this year. They sited exercise, maintaining their pack leader status, and bonding as their motivation for walking their pooch more often. 3 - More Outings: More car rides, doggie bakery visits, beach outings, and family vacations, are among the activities that respondents said they are resolved to doing more of with their fourlegged family members. Getting out and spending some quality time with their pets to make that bond even stronger is at the top of many pet parents minds this year! See NEW YEAR page 30...

When complete, the home will be sold to the Holbrook Family, composed of Waylon, a veteran, his wife Nicole, and their two young sons. Accountabilities: An easy fix to many financial disagreements is assigning specific roles and accountabilities to each partner. Perhaps one partner pays the rent or mortgage while the other handles the groceries, phone bill and loan payments. However it’s divvied up, this strategy assures both partners are committed to managing their money well. Partnership: This is perhaps the greatest bone of contention when it comes to finances, especially if one partner is working hard to save and spend within

the bounds while the other seems careless with the couple’s finances. In such cases, there may be emotional issues at play, whether one partner indulges in retail therapy or the other uses money as a weapon or punishment. Whatever the case, partnership in setting and meeting financial goals is integral to happiness and harmony. A professional counselor may be needed to help uncover underlying causes of money problems and differences. For more information: www.takechargeamerica.org.

4 - Socialization: As more pet parents opt to take their pets on more outings, there comes the need to better social them. Fifteen percent of pet parents polled are committed to helping their shy, skittish, or fearful pet become more comfortable around people, other pets, and in public places. 5 - Training: A close cousin of socialization, training, comes in as the fifth most popular pet resolution of 2016. We all can't have the perfectly mannered pet but a good number of pet parents

plan to devote the time to curb some not-so-favorable behavior. From teaching Rover not to bark at house guests and drag you while on walks to practicing better recall (getting your dog to come when called) and training your cat to stay off kitchen counters...pet parents are ready to put on their pet whisperer hat! Obituaries ~

George “Tom Gillibrand, 64 CAPE NEDDICK – George “Tom Thomas Gillibrand, 64, of Cape Neddick, passed away on January 28, 2016, at his home surrounded by loved ones. Born in Boston, MA on May 16, 1951, Tom was a son of the late George Elmer and Gretchen (Sayward) Gillibrand. He was raised in Billerica, MA where he attended school until his early teens when he and his family moved to Kittery. After his graduation from R.W. Traip Academy in 1969, he proudly enlisted in the United States Coast Guard as a Bosn’s Mate until 1973. On May 4, 1974, Tom married his loving wife Pamela and together they built a home in Cape Neddick. There they had many fond memories playing horseshoes, taking care of their numerous animals and entertaining great friends. Together they raised their children, Ian and Brianna, there until Pam’s death in August 2003. In 2004, Tom and Cindy M. Frisbee became a couple after years of friendship adding her and her son, Robert Ficke to

the family. They shared eleven wonderful years together living in Kittery Point and Cape Neddick before their marriage on December 15, 2015. Being avid New England Patriots fans the two refused to ever miss a game together. Tom was a very talented and creative man and because of that he held several jobs throughout his life. After serving in the Coast Guard, he worked in the Sail Loft at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Tom worked in many kitchens at local restaurants such as Boomerangs, the Rusty Hammer, the Lobster Barn, and Cap’n Simeon’s Galley. Tom is most well known for his outstanding carpentry skills. He had a hand in building many homes, including his own, and businesses, leaving his mark throughout the area. Tom was a well known local musician, talented in guitar and flute, but was best known for his abilities as a lead singer. Over the years he was in many bands with great friends, including Sea Smoke in the early years just out of high school, as well as Beggarman Thief, and Thick as Thieves. Besides his beloved wife,

Johnson Monument Company

Cindy, Tom leaves a son and daughter-in-law, Ian and Sara Gillibrand of Savannah, GA and a daughter, Brianna Gillibrand, of Cape Neddick; a daughter, Maria and granddaughters, Shannon and Summer; a stepson, Robert Ficke of Mayport, FL; a father- and mother-inlaw, Frank and Bonnie Frisbee, of Kittery Point; a brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Barbara Gillibrand, of Wells, and a niece, Jennifer, and grandniece and grandnephew, Isabelle and Alex, of Penacook, NH; and two foster brothers, Scotty Trevett and his wife, Evelyn of Burlington, MA and Arnold Trevett and his wife, Jane of Middleton, MD. Tom also leaves behind numerous friends that he considered family. He will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved him. The memorial service will be celebrated on Sunday, February 7, at 1 p.m. in the JS Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road Kittery. The family asks for comfortable attire, such as flannels and jeans to be worn at the service. In lieu of flowers charitable donations may be made in his memory to the York Center for Wildlife. Online condolences may be made by visiting www. jspelkeyfuneralhome.com.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, I have a computer with Windows 10. Why do computers have a power button that you turn it on with, but you are not supposed to turn it off with? All my other devices can be turned on and off with the power button. Randy Dear Randy, Actually, if you make a few changes in your settings, you can use the power button to shut down your computer safely. Here is how: 1. On your Windows 10 computer, tap the windows logo key on your keyboard and type: Power Options. Click on, “Power Options in the search results. 2. This will open the Control Panel in the power options section. Click on “Choose what the power button does in the left hand section. 3. Now, you will see a section for power button and lid settings. You can select different settings if you are running on battery power or plugged in. Click the drop down arrow for each section and click on “Shut down to select it. 4. Click the “Save Changes button at the bottom of the window to save your changes. Now, when you press and release the power button, your computer will begin the shutdown process and turn off

when finished. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have been a subscriber to your newsletter and still find something useful and new to learn after all these years. I have a question regarding decluttering: We have decided that this year will be our year of decluttering; I want to rip our music CD collection and save them on our PC/Mac with backup to disc. The idea is to get rid of the 300 odd CD’s. We have used the Mac and scanned several into iTunes; created playlists, synced with iPods, iPhones, iPads. This has been fine, actually pretty good. But I have a concern that iTunes is too locked into Apples hardware (and recording format, AAC). What happens 10 years from now when we move away from Apple (or iTunes isnít supported), and there are different preferred formats? Futureproof portability? Salome Dear Salome, I have a couple of cautions for you in your quest for less clutter. First, the physical CD you purchased, is your proof of ownership. Once you have ripped the music to your computer, you should either store or destroy the CDs because if you sell them or give them away, you are selling or giving your

,. / !1/Ă?/ ĂŠÄ„²Â€ .nÂĽnÂ…@en @å‘åÏen ÂƒĂ˝Âƒ

ownership of the music on your computer as well. Second, is the format you are storing them in. When I rip my CDs, I store them in MP3 format, which is a more universal format. Your apple devices will be able to play MP3 files, along with most other music devices. If the digital copy of your music is your only copy, you want to make sure they are backed up. I like to keep my music in three locations. On my computer, on a backup drive and on an online server. Elizabeth

Windows 10 drivers for your printer do not have the feature programmed in. You can still highlight and print your content though; you will just have to do one extra step before printing. After you highlight your article or recipe, just paste it into an empty document in a program like, Word or OneNote and then print. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady, I have trouble in Windows 10 printing excerpts from certain articles, recipes, etc. I used to highlight and print but I can’t do that in Windows 10. I do use the Snipping Tool but it is limited in what it covers to print. Suppose I want to print more than it covers. What do I do? Thanks for your help, Patsy

Dear Gladys, How you clear your browser history depends on what browser you are using. I’m guessing that you are using

Dear Patsy, The ability to highlight and then print only the highlighted portion of a document is not tied to your operating system (in your case Windows 10) but is a feature of some printers. Since you were able to highlight and print previously, either you changed printers when you upgraded to Windows 10, or the newer,

Internet Explorer: 1. Open Internet Explorer. 2. Click on the “tools icon (looks like a gear in the upper-right corner of the window) then click on “Internet Options. 3. In the “Browsing History section on the “General page, click the “Delete... button. 4. Make sure that “History is checked off, then click the “Delete button at the bottom of the dialog box. You Could be an ASA Softball Umpire STATEWIDE – The Amateur Softball Association (ASA) runs competitions in every state through a network of 76 state and metro associations. It has a membership of over 230,000 teams, with more than 3 million players and 35,000 umpires. Every spring all across Maine, ASA conducts clinics and provides other important training opportunities to individuals who can respond affirmatively to the following questions. Do you enjoy working outdoors? Do you enjoy staying active and alert? Have you ever wanted to be an umpire? Or perhaps you’ve been at or played in a softball game and said to yourself, “I can do a better job umpiring than that umpire”. Maine ASA Softball District Umpire and Chiefs state-

wide stand ready to prepare this year’s veteran and prospective umpires to umpire the great sport of softball. Attendees will be taught everything there is to know: including calling strikes and balls, fair and foul balls, safes and outs, the proper position on the field to make the best call and how to properly handle players and coaches. All levels of softball ranging from junior olympics, modified and fast pitch, coed, men’s, women’s and senior division slow-pitch in numerous leagues throughout Maine need umpires to work their games. Anyone of any ability is invited to attend clinics at a location near them. Upon successful completion of the training umpires will join ASA and receive benefits including $5,000,000 of liability insurance coverage, ac-

cident insurance up to $100,000, dental insurance, a Balls and Strikes newsletter, hotel and car rental discounts and best of all get you on the field where you will be paid to have fun. ASA umpires are nationally recognized as some of the best trained and proficient in the sport and are involved in competitions which include league play, city, state and national championships. Ultimately, ASA umpires could officiate events such as the world championship, Pan American and Olympic competitions. If you would like sign up, need more information or just have questions please call Maine ASA UIC Scott Tilton at 207807-3504 or by email him at uicmeasa@gmail.com. Clinics start soon, so don’t wait, call now.
