Matt Chase Places First in Geography Bee at WJHS WELLS – On January 22, Wells Junior High School eighth grade student Matt Chase became champion in the school’s annual geography bee, part of the first round in the 27th Annual National Geographic Bee sponsored by the National Geographic Society in Washington. Another eighth grader, Spencer Poulin, was runner-up. This marks the second time that Matt Chase has emerged victorious in this contest, the first time in January of 2013. As in past years, there were ten student finalists taking on challenging and sometimes obscure questions about geography in front of a large audience consisting of students, parents and school staff in the Ward Gymnasium. Other finalists included Hannah Chase, Covy Dufort, Tori Hayward, Garner Holdsworth, Guss Madsen, Samuel Norbert, Katie Plourde and Wyatt Rowe. The process creating these finalists began earlier this winter with bees held in classrooms followed by a semifinal round. At the end of March, after

Island in the winter of 1710 without any provisions. Four men died, and the remaining ten were forced to eat one of the bodies in order to survive. When rescued, Captain John Deane told one story; his crew told another, a much darker tale of mutiny, betrayal, and attempted murder. Where did the truth lie? Writers Andrew Vietze and Stephen Erickson turned this fascinating history into the award-winning book. Boon Island won a gold medal at the Independent Publishers Book Awards, was a Book of the Year Finalist at the IndieFab Awards and garnered much critical praise: Publishers Weekly called it “a maritime whodunit rife with twists and turns and high drama. The Portsmouth Herald found it “superb... both well-researched history and a page-turning mystery that begs to be a motion picture. The book was a June, 2014 Amazon best seller, and was featured on the Travel Channel’s popular program “Monumental Mysteries.

YORK COUNTY On Thursday, Feb. 12, Caring Unlimited will begin training new volunteer hotline advocates. Applications are currently being accepted for the upcoming training. Founded by volunteers in 1977, York County’s Domestic Violence Resource Center continues to rely on volunteers to ensure that support and safety planning services are available 24hours a day to women, their
children, and men whose lives are affected by domestic abuse. Currently, approximately 20 volunteer hotline advocates work with Caring Unlimited taking calls on the 24-Hour Hotline. Volunteer Kelly M. encourages more members of the community to become involved as volunteers stating, “Go for it! It’s been an incredibly rewarding experience for me, and there is a great need for more volunteers. Unfortunately, DV pro-

~ News ~ Kittery School Secures Federal Permit to Preserve Migratory Birds KITTERY Jen Thayer, an Educational Technician at Kittery’s Shapleigh School (www.kitteryschools.com), has secured a competitive federal permit from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Department. The permit allows Thayer to preserve found migratory birds for educational purposes. Currently Thayer has a Belted King Fisher, one of the largest of its type in Maine; a Ruby Throated Hummingbird, one of the smallest birds in the world; an American Redstart; a Purple Finch; and a Turkey fledgling. These birds are in rare undamaged condition and show an amazing array of diversity and adaptation. These preserved species, in addition to other found deceased birds, will be used for an environmental education program focusing on migratory birds. Using curriculum and print materials provided by Cornell University’s Project Feeder Watch Program (www. feederwatch.org), Thayer, Shapleigh School teachers, and the Shapleigh student Green Team will educate Kittery’s grade 4-8 students about migratory and regional birds; flight and migratory patterns; proper bird identification; eating habits; nesting habits; maintenance of feeding area; graphing and tracking information; bird calls and songs; endangered birds; and behavior. These students will make 12 presentations throughout the year
to share what they have learned. Presentations will take place in the Kittery schools, local community organizations, as well as reach out to surrounding towns. The Shapleigh School, a fourth through eighth grade school, has been a member of Cornell University’s Project Feeder Watch Program since 2011. The Kittery K-8 Parent Teacher Association (www.kitterypta.org) has just awarded Thayer $400 to support the program. “The Kittery PTA works hard each year to fund many teacher requests. Thayer’s educational program with these great bird specimens is a unique opportunity for the school and
broader community to learn amazing things about conservation, local birding, ecosystems and so much more,” said Sandra Hamel, Kittery PTA co-chair. The Kittery Trading Post is supporting the program with a $400 donation as well as hosting presentations at their store. The Southern Maine Fish and Game has also supported this program by donating $400. The budget for the program this year is $800. This only covers the preservation of the birds. Additional in-kind and volunteer support is needed. Interested individuals should contact Thayer at jthayer@ kitteryschools.com or 207-4392572. For further information, contact Sandra Hamel at sandyphamel@aol.com or 617-3120693.

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Rock My Soul Seeking Members SOUTH BERWICK – Rock My Soul, a secular gospel choir known in the Seacoast for lively, roots-based music and rich harmonies, is accepting new singers for the 2015 season. Rock My Soul will welcome new members at rehearsals beginning on Tuesday, Feb. 10. Rock My Soul, part of nonprofit ProjectMusicWorks, is based in South Berwick, but draws singers from various communities as far north as Portland and as far south as the North Shore in Massachusetts. Now in its 11th year, Rock My Soul has garnered critical acclaim and performed throughout New England at music festivals, prestigious music venues, and commu-
nity events. A crucial part of the group’s mission, however, is to sing for those in need at hospice, nursing homes, rehab centers, mental health facilities, and other locations where hearing and joining in on songs can make a profound difference to a person’s health and sense of well being. If interested, call Membership Director Tina Weinberger at 207-698-4494 or visit www.projectmusicworks.org for details. The ability to read music is not required, but the ability to sing on pitch and retain parts learned by ear is essential. There are no auditions. Rock My Soul rehearses every Tuesday 7-9 p.m. at the First Parish Federated Church, 150 Main St, South Berwick.
The Arundel Barn Playhouse Announces Summer 2015 Season ARUNDEL – The Arundel Barn Playhouse is thinking ahead to warmer weather and its summer season with the following performances: “Nunsense A-Men!” June 16 to June 27 The Little Sisters of Hoboken are faced with a dilemma when Sister Julia, Child of God, accidentally kills 52 sisters with tainted vichyssoise. After burying 48, The Little Hobos still have 4 sisters in the freezer, and no money for their burials. They plan a benefit that will display the divine talents of Mother Superior, a former circus performer, Sister Mary Hubert, second in command, Sister Robert Ann, a streetwise nun from Brooklyn, Sister Mary Leo, a novice dancing her way to holy grace, and Sister Amnesia, who lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her head. Add to the Nunsense nonsense when male actors “get in the habit”. Thus the A-MEN! The Addams Family” June 30 to July 11 This brand new musical brings the darkly delirious world of Gomez, Morticia, Uncle Fester, Grandma, Pugsley, The Addams Ancestors, Thing, It, and, of course, Lurch, to life. Rigor mortis begins when this bizarre and beloved clan must adjust to the idea that Wednesday, now grown up, wants to marry a ‘normal’ guy. We’re all invited to a lunatic dinner including a macabre game with the whole ghoulish family and the fiance’s Ohio parents! We’ll leave the lights off for you! Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” July 14 to August 1 In a magical kingdom beneath the sea, lives the beautiful mermaid Ariel who longs to leave her ocean home to live in the world above. She makes an unwise bargain with Sea Witch
Ursula, to trade her voice for a pair of human legs. A dazzling array of sea creatures including Flounder, Ariel’s best friend, crabby Sebastian, and Scuttle, a gossiping seagull, help Ariel try to outwit Ursula and fulfill her dream. This timeless tale is perfect family fun filled with irresistible dance, laughter and songs like Under The Sea and Part Of Your World!. “La Cage Aux Folles” August 4 to August 15 Join us on the Riviera with Georges, the owner of a bawdy drag club and Albin, his partner and high strung headliner (aka Zaza). Their 20 year devotion to another is almost ruined when Georges’ son (offspring of a one night adventure) announces his engagement to the daughter of an ultra-conservative politician. Albin’s efforts to impress the fiancé’s parents with a pictureperfect family bring hilarious results. Ablaze with fun, energy, humor and the magnificent Cagelles, this is one of Broadway’s all time biggest hits. The Best Of Times Is Now! I Am What I Am! (PG12 content) “Beehive: The 60’s Musical” August 18 to August 29 Come celebrate an era of love and rock and roll in this nostalgic look back at the women who sang the hits of the tumultuous 60’s. This blast from the past features the hottest singers and girl groups with 40+ songs from the decade’s early bubble gum days to the civil unrest of its later years. Sing along with Annette Funicello, The Supremes, The Chiffons, Connie Francis, Brenda Lee, Lesley Gore, Aretha Franklin, Petula Clark, Dusty Springfield, Tina Turner, Janis Joplin and Patti LaBelle with hits like Downtown, Proud Mary, It’s My Party, Respect, I’m Sorry, Piece Of My Heart and so much more!

popcorn for all. Written by Tom Schulman and directed by Peter Weir the film is set at the elite prep boarding school, Welton, Academy, in the northeast United States in 1959. The film received critical acclaim and was a huge box office success. It was also BAFTA’s best film and was awarded “best foreign film” in France and Italy. Author Tom Schulman won an Academy Award for the Best Original Screenplay. “Dead Poets Society” was also nominated for Best Picture and Williams was nominated for Best Actor. John Keating (Robin Williams) is a new English teacher at Welton Academy, a staid but well-respected prep school where education is a pragmatic
and rather dull affair. But this unconventional educator soon changes his students’ thoughts on the learning process as he tears chapters from textbooks and asks students to stand on their desks to see the world from a different angle. He encourages his students to “make your lives extraordinary.” He introduces his students to poetry and his freethinking attitude and the liberating philosophies of the authors that he introduces to his students. The students soon have their thoughts on the learning process and on life itself changed by this unconventional educator. The film will be shown on a wall-size screen with introduction by OPA member Mikie Boyd.

Maintain Your Productivity When Working From Home Telecommuting has grown more and more common over the last decade. Thanks in large part to advancements in technology that make it easier than ever before to connect remotely with coworkers, telecommuting is now something more and more companies are
embracing. According to Global Workplace Analytics, a consulting and research firm that focuses on emerging workplace strategies, the total telework growth from 2011 to 2012, the most recent year for which statistics are available, was 3.8

percent. But those figures don’t tell the entire story, as the rise of telecommuters increased considerably since 2006, when the number of teleworkers grew by 26 percent over the year prior. Telecommuting can pay dividends for workers and businesses alike. Workers benefit from telecommuting in a variety of ways. Working parents find telecommuting drastically cuts back on or even eliminates childcare costs, saving them thousands of dollars per year. Working from home also saves workers’ vehicles from the everyday wear and tear of driving to and from work, potentially adding years to a vehicle’s life expectancy. Businesses also benefit from allowing employees to work remotely. Small businesses may need less office space if many of their employees work from home, saving them substantial amounts of money in rent. In addition, businesses who allow workers to telecommute may not need to spend as much on computers and other tools for their employees, as many telecommuters use their own personal computers when working from home. While telecommuting can benefit employee and employer, the success of such an arrangement depends largely on the
employees who will be working from home. Men and women who work from home often find they have more freedom at home than they did when working in an office, and how they handle that freedom will go a long way toward determining how successful they are at telecommuting. The following are a handful of strategies telecommuters can employ to ensure their work-from-home experiment is a productive success. Stick to a schedule. Workers who still commute to work adhere to a schedule, and so should telecommuters. Sticking to a schedule will allow you to maintain the same level of productivity you aspired to when working in the office, and a schedule will ensure your personal life does not encroach on your professional life. Let others know your schedule. Though you’re now working from home, your schedule likely has not changed. You may be able to sleep in a little later because you no longer have to commute, but your workday is likely still eight hours. Once you have established your schedule, let others in your household, whether it’s a spouse, your children or

roommates, know when you will be working on a daily basis. This reduces the likelihood that your housemates will distract you or walk into your office while you’re on a video chat or conference call with colleagues or clients. Ask for a work phone. Many companies who allow employees to telecommute will provide a phone for such workers. This phone is linked to the same network workers use in the office, and it’s a wholly separate line from your personal lines at home. It’s important that telecommuters keep a separate phone solely for work so their personal and professional messages do not get mixed up, which can make it more difficult for men and women to do their jobs. Use the technology at your disposal. One of the ways technology has made it easier to work from home is by providing a number of ways workers can stay in constant and instant contact with their coworkers. But such technology is only useful if telecommuters make it work for them. Video conferencing allows telecommuters to conduct “face-to-face meetings with coworkers, while instant messaging is a valuable tool to stay in touch with coworkers who you work with directly. Use these programs to your advantage, and you’ll notice you’re not only more productive but also still able to maintain a personal connection with your coworkers. You’re Flirting With Your Future Remember your first love? For years, the two of you came to the same place — a cafeteria or office or train car. At first, you sat across from each other, but as the time passed, you edged closer. You stared into each other’s eyes. A warm feeling developed in your chest and your lips curved into a coy smile. Soon, you got a smile in return. International Flirting Week, February 16 to 22, is a reminder that flirting can be fun. Did You Know About Tipping Etiquette? Etiquette with regard to tipping varies depending on the country you’re visiting. In the United States, Americans are accustomed to tipping a minimum of 15 percent, and that figure often rises when service is good. But many countries tip considerably less. In Japan, for example, many people consider it poor etiquette to tip at all, feeling the
customer deserves and should expect good service and therefore should not pay extra when such service is delivered. Other countries may not find it rude to tip, but Americans likely won’t have to tip the 15 to 20 percent they are used to tipping at home. Many countries even include a tip in the bill, regardless of the size of the party. To avoid overSee TIPPING page 29...

We encourage all to wear red all month to promote cardiovascular disease prevention. Just as the heart is vital to our emotional and physical wellbeing, Social Security disability benefits are often a vital lifeline for people who are unable to work due to severe disabilities — whether heart-related or not. There are numerous ways to protect our hearts, including eating well, exercising, and not smoking, getting physical checkups, and making sure to keep cholesterol levels down. However, sometimes these measures aren’t enough. In fact, disability will affect one in four of today’s 20 year-olds before reaching retirement age. The Social Security disability program excels in providing financial help to people when they need it most — help they earned by paying Social Security taxes on their earnings or as dependents of someone who paid Social Security taxes. Hypothermia: A Cold Weather Hazard During the winter, it is important for everyone, especially older adults and people with chronic medical conditions, to be aware of hypothermia. Hypothermia is a dangerous drop in body temperature that may lead to many health problems, such as a heart attack, kidney problems, liver damage, or worse. The National Institute on Aging (NIA), part of the National Institutes of Health, has some tips to help lessen some of the dangers. Older people are especially vulnerable to hypothermia because their body's response to cold can be diminished by underlying medical conditions, such as diabetes, and certain medications, including overthe-counter cold remedies. Hypothermia is generally defined as having a core body temperature of 95 degrees Fahrenheit or lower and can occur when the outside environment gets too cold or the body's heat producSee COLD page 16...

tion decreases. Hypothermia can develop in older adults even after relatively short exposure to cold weather or a small drop in temperature. Someone may be suffering from hypothermia if he or she has been exposed to low temperatures and shows one or more of the following signs: slowed or slurred speech, sleepiness or confusion, shivering or stiffness in the arms and legs, poor control over body movements or slow reactions, or a weak pulse. If you suspect someone is suffering from hypothermia, get them out of the cold if possible and call 911 right away for emergency help. Remove any wet clothes and cover the person with a coat or blanket. Here are a few tips to help prevent hypothermia: Check with your doctor or pharmacist to see if any prescription or over-the-counter medications you are taking may increase your risk for hypothermia. When going outside in the cold, wear a hat, scarf, and gloves or mittens to prevent loss of body heat through your head and hands. A hat is particularly im-
portant because a large portion of body heat can be lost through the head. Wear layers of warm loose clothing to help trap warm air between the layers. Make sure your home is warm enough. Set your thermostat to at least 68 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Even mildly cool homes with temperatures from 60 to 65 degrees can lead to hypothermia in older people. To stay warm at home in cold weather, wear long underwear under your clothes, along
with socks and slippers. Use a blanket or afghan to keep your legs and shoulders warm and wear a hat or cap indoors. Energy costs may discourage older people from keeping their houses warm enough in the winter. To help, funds have been made available for those in need through LIHEAP (www. acf.hhs.gov/programs/ocs/ liheap). For more details, call NIA at 1-800-222-2225 or visit www. nih.gov.

Virginia M. Nixon, 100 KENNEBUNK – Virginia M. Nixon, 100 years of age, formerly of Cambridge, Arlington, and Belmont, MA, died peacefully on Friday, January 30, 2015 at Greenwood Center in
Sanford. She was born in Cambridge, MA on December 24, 1914, the daughter of William A. and Christie L. (Weare) Morrison. She grew up in Cambridge, where she graduated from Cambridge High and Latin High School. She then attended Burdett College. Following college, she then went to work as the secretarial assistant to the manager of Boston Gas Company, a position she held for over 40 years. She was the widow of William K. Nixon, who tragically predeceased her in 1940 when she was only 27 years of age. Virginia vacationed many summers in York Beach where her grandparents lived. She worked in the Goldenrod during her High School years. She also took many trips to the British Isles as well as trips to Switzerland, France, Germany, Belgium and Holland. Upon retirement she became interested in researching her family going back 14 generations to England. She was a talented seamstress, and her special accomplishment was making her daughter Deborah’s wedding dress, along with several braided rugs. She served as Grand Marshall of the 1990 Patriot’s Day parade in Arlington, MA. She also has at least 5 ancestors who fought in the Revolution of 1775. In addition to quilting, crafts, and rug braiding, in her retirement she became very interested and active in Genealogy. As she neared the century mark, it was her goal of being recognized as such by Willard Scott on “The Today Show,” and was, in fact, so honored. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Rebecca Emery chapter, Biddeford, the Senior Center in Lower Village, Ken-
nebunk, the Wells/Ogunquit Historical Society, and the New England Genealogical Society. Virginia was a communicant of St. David’s Episcopal Church in Kennebunk. Virginia is survived by two daughters, Barbara Nixon in Arlington, MA and Deborah N. Foster in Wells. She also has two grandchildren, Thomas E. Foster, Jr., in Lyman, Maine and Mark N. Foster in North Reading, MA, as well as four great grandchildren, Davis, Rachel, Travis and Bradley. Virginia’s family expresses their deep gratitude and appreciation to the wonderful and caring staff at Greenwood Center in Sanford for their loving care of Virginia these past seven years. A private graveside service will be held in the spring. Should friends choose, memorial donations in her name are encouraged to: The Animal Welfare Society, PO Box 43, West Kennebunk, ME 04094. Arrangements are in care of Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk. www.bibberfuneral.com.
Rudolphe R. “Rudy” Pelletier, 93

The last seven years Rudy resided at the Wentworth Home in Dover, NH where he met some very special staff and friends, especially Maddie Heon. Rudy always made sure there were enough Lindt chocolates to go around for everyone. Rudy always missed his cat Toby and so perhaps with Toby by his side he will help his favorite team the Patriots win the Super Bowl! A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Notre Dame Church of St. Thérèse of Lisieux Parish, 10 Payne Street, Springvale. Burial with military honors will follow at the Southern Maine Veterans Memorial

This homemade onion dip may be the best onion dip you have ever eaten. It is great for the Super Bowl or a party with friends and family. Great with potato chips, pretzels or fresh vegetables like celery, carrots, caulißower, broccoli, or cherry tomatoes. Tell your friends itÕs an old family recipe and hesitate to give them the recipe, but give it to them if they promise to keep the secret.
Ingredients: 8 ounces of real Mayonnaise not light or olive oil types, the good stuff 8 ounces of sour cream 3 small sweet onions, 2 to 3 inches across chopped Þnely ½ teaspoon of sea salt ½ teaspoon of pepper
Preparation: Cut onions into small pieces, then cook in a light oil until caramelized 5 to 10 minutes. Mix all ingredients together in a large bowl, blend well and place in the refrigerator, cover with plastic wrap until chilled. Make it the night before so all the ingredients have a chance to blend together for a much better ßavor. Shared by Jason Parent.

“Our home was on the market for a year with very little interest and no offers. It had been off the market for two months when Phyllis approached us with suggestions on how to market the property. For three weeks she and Jenna worked round the clock, staging the house using mostly our furnishings and adding their own special touches and personal accessories. Phyllis supervised the professional photos that were taken. When the house was put on the market we were inundated with showings and had a signed purchase and sale within a month at 98% of the asking price. We have purchased and sold many properties in our lifetime and have never seen anything like the personal attention, commitment and professionalism of Phyllis and Jenna.â€? – Janet & Steve Erickson “Phyllis and Jenna are simply the best! ~ Pets ~ Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS – Only one more week left to take advantage of a challenge grant by Dr. Eleanor Saboski to benefit our building fund. On Saturday we took in two kittens found in a barn, and we’re hopeful to catch their momma. The kittens are old enough to eat on their own, but we always try to catch the mother cat so she too will have a safe and happy life. A special thank you to a volunteer named Joe, who shoveled through the mountains of snow blocking our shed at 1616 Post Road. Joe spent Sunday morning working at it, until completion. We’re looking for more volunteers to work at our new adoption center. Please call Leonore at 207-985-3227 to volunteer, or to meet kitties available for adoption.

Voice For Animals YORK Sam and Samantha are gorgeous tabbies that started their life under a shed with their littermate, Tabatha. Voice for Animals got them when they were 8 weeks old and brought them into their Foster home. Although warm and safe, they were also scared and unsure of their new surroundings. They have all come a long way and are use to indoor life and have learned to trust their Foster people. The three littermates love to run and play with each other and perform all the typical, fun kitten antics. At night, they curl up on the bed with their Foster mom and enjoy their people love and attention. The Foster home has a few older kitties that, unfortunately, are having a difficult time with these kitten antics. Out of respect for these mature cats, we are in need of another Foster (or even better,
forever) home for the three tabby kittens. Voice for Animals (VFA) is a grassroots, nonprofit and no-kill organization established in 1987 and headquartered in York. Please contact Voice for Animals for more information. Email: in2catz@gmail.com or call 207-715-0635

Michael Curtis Awarded Athlete of the WHS Month
Left to right: John Kreie, Pamela Moody-Maxon, Michael Curtis, Jack Molloy.
WELLS – Wells High School’s Activities Director Jack Molloy has announced that senior, two-time State champion and ‘All American’, Michael Curtis has been selected Athlete of the Month for December 2014. Curtis, a member of the school’s wrestling and football teams, received this distinction from a combination of his academics, sportsmanship and extraordinary accomplishments with the WHS Wrestling Team. According to WHS Wrestling Coach Scott Lewia, Curtis’ accomplishments include being named Atlantic Invitational
Champion, Noble Invitational Champion and a Warrior Clash Champion. Lewia pointed out that Curtis reached his 100th career ‘pin’ in a semi-final wrestling match at Noble High School. In wrestling, a ‘pin’ is when one completely pins an opponent’s shoulder to the mat preventing them from getting up thus ending and deciding the match. In other words, a ‘pin’ is also a match win. Presenting Curtis with the WHS Athlete of the Month on January 21st was Jack Molloy, John C. Kreie and Pamela See CURTIS page 29...

~ News &Classifieds ~ ...THIBODEAU from page 18 puzzles. She loved to bake and was most notable for her apple pies and muffins. She and her husband wintered in Myrtle Beach for 18 years. They loved going to breakfast at Mel’s Raspberry Patch and visiting with their many friends. Her most memorable vacation was in 2005 when she traveled to Indonesia. That trip would forever be a highlight in her life as she shared her stories quite frequently. Grace also had a special friend in her beagle, Lacy, whom she loved to cuddle and spoil, just like her own child. Grace is survived by her husband, Louis Thibodeau, Sr., of Sanford; 2 sons, Louis “Butch More than 100 ‘wins’ in a high school career is an accomplishment, but Mike has more than 100 ‘pins’ which is unheard of. Curtis said that he was “honored about receiving Athlete of the Month. “It means a lot, he added. He indicated that he has been wrestling since first grade and has been a member of the WHS team since freshman year. On the 21st he indicated that that he was at 36-0, match wins versus losses, this season bringing his career total to over 163. Moody-Maxon predicted that Curtis will likely end the season breaking a previous WHS wrestler’s record of 174 career wins, the current record at WHS. “He is probably the best wrestler I have ever seen come out of Wells High School, he is by far the strongest, said Moody-Maxon who surmised, “He is very humble and it is just a great honor to provide this award to him. The biggest thing is that he is a gentle giant.

nity Foundation. Being a community-centered high school, this grant gave the school the means to strengthen and deepen thier ties to the community by offering free classes to senior citizens. Classes include Art, Music History, Writing, Poetry, Yoga, Marine Biology, Sherlock Holmes and the Deduction Process, and more. TNS’s goal in offering classes to senior citizens is to connect multiple generations to promote intergenerational and lifelong learning. Intergenerational learning enhances socialization and health for seniors, helps teens to raise their academic performance and breaks down
age-based stereotypes. The age variety contributes to the depth and diversity of information and experience on the issues presented for discussion and debate, making the class much more interesting. All classes at The New School will be open to seniors starting the second semester that begins on February 23. The Maine Community Foundation is a statewide nonprofit created by and for the people of Maine. The foundation is a philanthropic leader in building sustainable and vibrant communities for all Maine people. The New School is an independent local high school that serves students from all over York and Cumberland County. It is a state approved high school that meets
the state Learning Results standards in new and innovative ways. It is also a school of choice for Acton and Arundel students. Dear Computer Lady, I have been reading your newsletter for a long time and continue to enjoy and learn from you and many of your readers. I did not like Windows 8.1 at first but after giving it a good try I really like the tiles and the touch screen. I am still learning to navigate it but have found it to be a lot of fun. I have a question
that I hope you can help with. I have several avi. files that play on my windows 7 laptop using Windows Media Player but when I put them on my windows 8.1 Asus conversion tablet they cannot play them even though I use Windows Media Player. I don't know what I am doing wrong. Thank you for your newsletter, Mike H in Maine

Dear Mike, I am pleased to hear that you enjoy and learn from my writing. The most likely reason that you can't play your AVI files in Windows 8 is that Windows Media Player doesn't have the correct AVI compressor/ decompressor (codec). In order to play your AVI files, you will need to download and install the codecs first. You will need the DivX and/or XviD codecs. There are a lot of places online that offer these codecs as "free" downloads, but you need to be cautious when downloading free things since a lot of adware and malware often sneaks in with the software you are trying to download. I usually download my codecs from magicdvdripper.com on the download page. I already use this program, and have downloaded their codecs multiple times with no problems. Just click on the "Download" page and scroll to the bottom of the page. Once you download and install these codecs, you
should be able to play your AVI files. Elizabeth
you are using, I can't tell you what the settings should be. The problem could be that the sender doesn't have their email program set up correctly, but again, without knowing what program they are using, and what their settings are, I can't give you specifics. The problem could be in the process of converting a message from one email format to another. AOL email seems to have a lot of those types of problems. The problem could be with your security software. Some security programs block images from people that are not in your address list, or that come from questionable sources. I know I haven't really answered your question, but, hopefully I have give you a direction to investigate further in. If you can't find the answer you are looking for, give me a call and we can set up a time for you to bring the computer in for diagnostics. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Dear Computer Lady, When I receive email with images, the images do not appear, although the box is there for them. I checked email preferences and HTML is checked and below it says images will be forwarded with HTML. What am I doing wrong? I read your column in the paper each Friday, and I haven't seen this problem mentioned. Thank you, Elinor Dear Elinor, This is actually a fairly common question, but I don't have a simple, or universal answer for you. The truth is that there are a lot of reasons why you might not be able to view images, and the problem could be on your end, or on the senders end. There is no way to tell for sure without a little investigation and a lot of questions. The problem could be with the settings in your email program, but since you didn't mention what email program
