PNSY Enters into Agreement with UMass Lowell KITTERY Portsmouth Naval Shipyard entered into an educational partnership agreement (EPA) with the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UMass Lowell) at a signing ceremony February 4. This is the shipyard’s first laboratory agreement with a Massachusetts academic institution since achieving laboratory status in March 2017; additional laboratory agreements are in development. “The partnership allows us to work collaboratively with UMass Lowell and their unique facilities and talented people to address real-world technical challenges we see in a shipyard environment,” said Shipyard Commander, Capt. Daniel Ettlich. “This promotes education collaboration and knowledge sharing to adapt new technologies in support of our mission to safely deliver submarines to the fleet on time, and on budget.” The five-year agreement will allow the Navy to make its scientific, engineering, and technology assets and subject matter experts available to University faculty to enhance the educational experience of UMass Lowell students. In turn, the Navy is able to involve UMass Lowell faculty and students in innovative projects underway at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. “This EPA solidifies the growing partnership between Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and UMass Lowell,” said Provost

It protects the intellectual property, such as inventions, data and proprietary information, of each partner. Among other things, the EPA enables the Navy to loan unique and specialized hardware to the university to collaboratively address Navy-specific challenges. “Executing the EPA is the beginning of a long and mutuSee SHIPYARD page 4...

New Elementary School Opening in September
KENNEBUNKPORT Two years ago, the Stack family began home-schooling their four children — not because they were unhappy with the public schools, but because they wanted something different for their family. “We began home-schooling because we wanted to instill our values, give our children
time to run and be free, to be outside, to experience and learn from the real world around them, and simply to spend time as a family,” said Kori Stack, who has a Master’s in Education and is the Head of School at the new Acton Academy Kennebunkport. “What amazed us almost immediately was how creative

our kids were and how much they could do on their own. It was really eye-opening. It proved to us that kids do have a natural desire to learn, and it happens very naturally if we take a step back, let them make mistakes, and figure things out on their own,” said Stack. The decision to open a new elementary school came after Kori learned about Acton Academy from the book “Courage to Grow,” written by Laura Sandefer. Her reaction was, “Could this be even better? Could it challenge our kids in an amazing way? And could it help not only our kids, but other like-minded families in our community?” This was nothing that was planned and came at a time when home-schooling was going well for the family, but Kori knew what this could mean for their children and community of Southern Maine. In September of this year, Acton Academy Kennebunkport will open, focusing on grades 1 -5, with a few kindergarteners. There are currently only nine spots open as the Stacks are

CMP Tree Care Maintenance KITTERY Central Maine Power works year-round to reduce tree-related outages and deliver reliable service. An important part of the CMP Tree Care program is to prevent outages along transmission lines. In the spring of 2020, CMP may be conducting tree work throughout the Town of Kittery. The objective of the work is to remove and discourage the growth of trees and to encourage the growth of grasses, ferns and bushes around power lines which traverse the countryside, away
from highways. Landowners who object to the proposed Tree Care maintenance, may request a Landowner’s Maintenance Agreement with CMP. The landowner must agree to maintain these areas to the company’s specifications. Landowner Agreement forms can be found online. Customers can sign up to receive a notice when tree trimming is happening in their area. Call CMP Customer Service at 1-800-750-4000 or visit www. cmpco.com for tips on tree planting and care.

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ A History of Herbalism in Maine YORK Enjoy a scholarly lecture, immediately followed by a simple supper of soup and bread in historic Jefferds Tavern on Wednesday, February 12 at 6 p.m. The popular Soup Series continues with a lecture by Old York’s own Hannah Peterson, an educator and interpreter, and a passionate amateur historian with a particular interest in historical uses of plants. Our ancestors had a keen knowledge of the natural world
around them, using native plants for everything from food and dyes to medicine and personal hygiene. Peterson has researched the use of herbs and plants in northern New England, and explored how they were prepared. Using hands-on examples of plants, dyed fabrics, and primitive tools, she shares her extensive knowledge of this unique aspect of Maine’s history. Peterson is an avid collector of books about ethnobotany--the study of how a people

use their native plants--and has lectured on the topic at Freeport Historical Society and MOFGA’s Common Ground Fair. She is currently employed as an educator at Old York Historical Society. A vegetarian soup will be served, accompanied by bread provided by When Pigs Fly. Admission is $22 / $20 members. Tickets are available online at www.oldyork.org or at the door. Ticket price includes the lecture and dinner. Attendees are invited to bring their own beer or wine.
KENNEBUNK The February meeting of AFIO (Association of Former Intelligence Officers) will feature Anouar Majid from the University of New England. He will talk about “Islam and the West in a Turbulent World” from his perspective of a person born in Tangier, Morocco. This meeting will take place at 2 p.m. on February 15 at the Brick Store Museum’s Program Center at 4 Dane Street in Kennebunk.
10 Years for “No Strings Attached” KENNEBUNK The New Year 2020 marks the 10th anniversary for community string ensemble “No Strings Attached”. How will this dedicated group of local violin, viola, cello and bass players celebrate? By doing what they always do, playing great music simply for the joy of it. And, as always, they’re inviting interested string players to join them. As the name implies, No Strings Attached is an informal and welcoming group. Members include recent beginners and those who played earlier in life and are rediscovering the fun of playing together, to lifelong dedicated amateurs, as well as a few pros. The repertoire is just as varied, ranging from the classics to more contemporary works, all at a medium easy to medium advanced level. The group meets on Thursday evenings about two-to-three
Born in Tangier, Morocco, Majid is the author of five critically acclaimed books on Islam and the West. He has written for The Washington Post, The Chronicle of Higher Education, The New York Times, and other international publications. His talk will cover topics such as the fast-changing dynamics of the relationship between Islam and the non-Muslim West, and whether there are new forces that are reshaping that relationship. A Q & A will follow.

Report Backs Tobacco Policy Tobacco use remains the nation’s leading cause of preventable death and disease, taking an estimated 480,000 lives every year. This year’s “State of Tobacco Control” report from the American Lung Association calls for proven tobacco control policies in light of the fact that the country’s youth vaping epidemic worsened in 2019. This year’s 18th annual report finds that in 2019 Maine had significant progress on its efforts to reduce and prevent tobacco use, including e-cigarettes, but that Maine officials must now take bold steps in order to sustain its leadership on tobacco policy in 2020. “In Maine, high school tobacco use rate across all products increased to at 29.6%, and middle school tobacco use rate is the highest in the northeast. We applaud Governor Mills and the Legislature for their actions in 2019 more than doubling funding for our prevention and control program, and equalizing taxes for all tobacco products. While these actions resulted in Maine having the best report card in the nation, there is simply more to be done. Sadly, the youth vaping epidemic is still rising, and Maine must lead the way by removing all flavored tobacco products from the shelves and significantly raising the tobacco tax. Without using these proven measures outlined in the ‘State of Tobacco Control’ we may lose the opportunity to make the current generation of kids the first tobacco-free generation,” said American Lung Association Senior Division Director for State Public Policy, Lance Boucher. The 18th annual “State of Tobacco Control” report grades states and the federal government on policies proven to prevent and reduce tobacco use. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~
Dear Computer Lady, Please tell me how to clear my browser history. Thank you so much, I love your articles. Gladys Dear Gladys, How you clear your browser history depends on what browser you are using. I’m guessing that you are using Microsoft Edge: 1. Open Edge. 2. Click on the “settings & more” icon (looks like three small dots in the upper-right corner of the window) then click on “Settings”. 3. Click on “Privacy & Security” in the left column 4. In the “Browsing data” section, click the “Choose what to clear” button. 4. Make sure that “Browsing history” is checked off, then click the “Clear” button at the bottom of the dialog box. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have trouble in Windows 10 printing excerpts from certain articles, recipes, etc. I used to highlight and print but I can’t do that in Windows 10. I do use the Snipping Tool but it is limited in what it covers to print. Suppose I
want to print more than it covers. What do I do? Thanks for your help, Patsy Dear Patsy, The ability to highlight and then print only the highlighted portion of a document is not tied to your operating system (in your case Windows 10) but is a feature of some printers. Since you were able to highlight and print previously, either you changed printers when you upgraded to Windows 10, or the newer, Windows 10 drivers for your printer do not have the feature programmed in. You can still highlight and print your content though, you will just have to do one extra step before printing. After you highlight your article or recipe, just paste it into an empty document in a program like, Word or OneNote and then print. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have been reading your column for years, and still find something useful and new to learn after all this time. I have a question regarding decluttering:
We have decided that this year will be our year of decluttering; I want to rip our music CD collection and save them on our PC/Mac with backup to disc. The idea is to get rid of the 300 odd CDs. We have used the Mac and scanned several into iTunes; created playlists, sync’ed with iPods, iPhones, iPads. This has been fine, actually pretty good. But I have a concern that iTunes is too locked into Apple hardware (and recording format, AAC). What happens 10 years from now when we move away from Apple (or iTunes isn’t supported), and there are different preferred formats? Future- proof portability? Salome Dear Salome, I have a couple of cautions for you in your quest for less clutter. First, the physical CD you purchased, is your proof of ownership. Once you have ripped the music to your computer, you should either store or destroy the CDs because if you sell them or give them away, you are selling
or giving your ownership of the music on your computer as well. Second, is the format you are storing them in. When I rip my Cds, I store them in MP3 format, which is a more universal format. Your apple devices will be able to play MP3 files, along with most other music devices. If the digital copy of your music is your only copy, you want to make sure they are backed up. I like to keep my music in three locations. On my computer, on a backup drive, and on an online server. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have a computer with Windows 10. Why do computers have a power button that you turn it on with, but you are not supposed to turn it off with? All my other devices can be turned on and off with the power button. Randy Dear Randy, Actually, if you make a few changes in your settings, you can use the power button to shut down your computer safely. Here is how:
1. On your Windows 10 computer, tap the windows logo key on your keyboard and type: Power Options. Click on, “Power Options” in the search results. 2. This will open the Control Panel in the power options section. Click on “Choose what the power button does” in the left hand section. 3. Now, you will see a section for power button and lid settings. You can select different settings if you are running on battery power or plugged in. Click the drop down arrow for each section and click on “Shut down” to select it. 4. Click the “Save Changes” button at the bottom of the window to save your changes. Now, when you press and release the power button, your computer will begin the shutdown process and turn off when finished. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Elizabeth has answered thousands of computer questions over the years. To submit a question, email her at elizabeth. boston@gmail.com.
BUSINESS & FINANCE Maine Home Sales & Values Up AUGUSTA Sales of single-family existing homes in Maine jumped by double digits last month. The yearly MSP rose 4.65% to $225,000. “After an up-and-down year, 2019 ends as a recordbreaker,” says Tom Cole, 2020 President of the Maine Association of REALTORS and Managing Broker of Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate The Masiello Group in Brunswick. “Year-end statistics indicate the highest statewide sales volume and median sales price ever for Maine, reflective of high buyer demand, tight for-sale inventory, and strong pricing.”
Comparing December 2019 to December 2018, the National Association of Realtors reported a 10.6% national sales jump. Prices also rose 8.0% over that time period, to $276,900. Bernier-Gelinas FUNERAL HOME
Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

Virginia moved to Wentworth Senior Living in 2016 where she made many new friends, enjoyed planning bingo, trivia, taking scenic rides, visiting her sister, and remaining very active until her recent illness. Virginia was a member of Corpus Christi Parish in Portsmouth. She enjoyed her cross country trips with her husband, spending time with her family, frequent family dinners and her pet beagles Sandy and Breezy. Survivors include her sons Mark Poulin and life partner Karen Auen of Wells, and Martin Poulin and wife Pamela of Newfields, NH; grandchildren Marcella, Olivia, Katrina, Michael Dennis Poulin, and Talia Auen; sister Theresa Caccamo of Portsmouth, NH; sister-in-law Cecile Vigue of Fairfield; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Martin in 2004 and son Dennis in 1963. Virginia loved animals. In lieu of flowers memorial donations in her name may be made to the New Hampshire SPCA, 104 Portsmouth Ave., Stratham, NH 03885 or at wwww.nhspca. org/donate-today/. bereaved’s feelings in the patterns of community support which are psychologically beneficial. Flowers, however, express the inexpressible – they are symbolic.
missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

Access to Services to Quit Tobacco - Grade A; Minimum Age of Sale for Tobacco Products to 21 - Grade A. The American Lung Association encourages Maine to put in place all the public policies called for in “State of Tobacco Control,” and in particular, this year’s report noted the need to focus on increasing tobacco taxes. One of the most effective ways to reduce tobacco use through lowering youth initiation and prompting more current users to make quit attempts is to significantly increase the tax on all tobacco products. Multiple studies have shown that every
10% increase in the price of cigarettes reduces consumption by about four percent among adults and about seven percent among youth. “Maine has not raised its cigarette tax since 2005. To protect kids from a lifetime of nicotine addiction, the Lung Association encourages Maine to increase cigarette taxes by a minimum of $1.50 per pack. The measure to equalize the tax on all tobacco products was an important victory in 2019, and now the Maine legislature should act to raise the tobacco tax to maximize its efficacy in preventing and reducing tobacco use,” said Boucher.

~ Pets ~ Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS Tom Terrific and Bianca were strays, living under a porch with other homeless kitties. They survived because they were fed by kindhearted people until they could be trapped and brought into the warmth of Safe Haven. Arriving fearful and wary, Tom Terrific has become a total lover boy. He endears himself to us more each day. He still has the thick neck and strong muscles from his five years of tomcat lifestyle.
His size and majestic Lion King stance command respect and attention. During his initial round of medical tests, he tested positive for FIV, which is not uncommon among tomcats. FIV does not shorten a cat’s life. It just means that he should get prompt medical care if he does get ill, because his immune system is less robust

Another Chance Animal Rescue NORTH BERWICK Introducing “Gilbert”! This sweet, self-assured and confident young male buff ginger boy is approximately 5-6 yrs old, affectionate and playful. He loves being the center of attention and his animated antics say it all! Gilbert came to us as a local stray on the thin side from his days on the street, but otherwise healthy. He has been fully vetted and has a clean bill of health. He would be fine in most any home, gets along great with adults and respectful children, along with other cats for the most part but is not mean or a bully at all. Dogs are an unknown but if gradual introductions were made with a friendly, non-hyper or perhaps older dog, Gilbert might be ok with that.

Both cats are nearly ready for adoption, so let us know soon if you’re interested. Call Joyce at 207-229-8314 for more details. Schedule a visit by calling 207646-1611.

On Saturday, February 8, Bishop Robert P. Deeley will bless the new additions at the church, located on 162 Agamenticus Road, during a special Mass at 4 p.m. All are welcome. Our Lady of the Angels Church was opened in 2011, but additional work to fulfill the needs of the parish was necessary. “We have had the land since the church was constructed and, thanks to the amazing contributions from donors, we now have a hall with the ability to seat 150 people, a stage area, a full commercial kitchen, classrooms, and a small chapel for weekday Masses,” said Bill Green, business manager for the Parish of the Ascension of the Lord, of which Our Lady of the Angels Church is a part. “Pine Brook Corporation of Kittery oversaw the construction, and Lassel, an architecture firm in South Berwick, created
the construction documents. It was a team effort, and everyone who has toured the new building is blown away. It’s spectacular.” In addition to the work in South Berwick, the front exterior of St. Raphael Church in Kittery was restored, including framing around the stained-glass windows. Deteriorating brick work, which had allowed water to seep into the building, was fixed. The interior lighting was upgraded to LED lighting, and a fresh air system was automated to cool the church at night during the summer. Hall support pillars were remolded, and the flooring of the church hall was replaced. A new roof has been installed on the Kittery rectory, and several bathrooms were upgraded in the parish center, which is also in Kittery. At St. Christopher Church in York, heat and air conditioning pumps were installed and parking was also expanded at the church’s chapel located across the street. At Star of the Sea Church in York Beach, a new circuit panel was installed, the organ was re-

SPORTS Kim Yurga Named Student-Athlete of the Month WELLS Wells High School senior Kim Yurga has been recognized as the school’s newest StudentAthlete of the Month receiving the award for October of 2019. Criteria for the selection included her academics and performance on the WHS Girls Varsity Volleyball team. Presenting a plaque to Yurga on January 17 was WellsOgunquit CSD Director of Athletics 6-12 Pierce Cole, John C. Kreie of the Cole Harrison Insurance Agency and Pamela MoodyMaxon of Moody Maxon Real Estate. Both businesses are sponsors of the Student-Athlete of the Month award at WHS. “I was actually surprised that I got this because I play with a lot of amazing girls but to me, this was very honoring because I put in so much hard work for this
sport,” said Yurga. “It means a lot to me. It shows that my hard work has been paying off.” Rachel Graceffa is the coach of the volleyball team at WHS. “Kim Yurga is very deserving of the Student-Athlete of the Month Award,” commented Graceffa. “She is a leader on and off the court and helped to battle back and win during the playoff game (with) Gardiner Area High School.” Graceffa went on to note that this was the first playoff win for the volleyball team in WHS history. Yurga plays various positions on the team including “outside”, “back row” and “defensive specialist”. She says the high school volleyball season begins with pre-season training in the summer and continues with the regular season that runs from September to early October. After
graduation from high school, she wants to continue to play volleyball for a division three team in college. According to Coach Graceffa, her team finished their volleyball season with 9 wins and 7 losses. (Photo and story by Reg Bennett)
