Local Opioid Consortium Invites Public to Learn About Recovery Program

Kennebunk Chief of Police, Robert MacKenzie, has been involved with the Rural York County Opioid Consortium’s efforts since summer of 2018 to provide a law enforcement perspective and help identify gaps in areas where information can and should be provided.

YORK COUNTY The Rural York County Opioid Consortium has made significant strides towards their goal of assessing and planning for the improvement of opioid prevention, treatment and recovery in York County. Treatment and Recovery Services: Southern Maine Healthcare (SMHC) offers treatment and recovery services at several locations. These practices are now working with clinicians at the Maine Behavioral Healthcare (MBH) Biddeford and Springvale Integrated Medication Assisted Treatment (IMAT) programs, to provide

comprehensive, integrated care that addresses both substance use and routine healthcare needs. SMHC is also piloting a rapid access model of care for patients who come to the Biddeford or Sanford emergency departments with opioid use disorder related conditions. These patients will be screened and those who qualify can initiate medication assisted treatment immediately. Partnering with Maine Behavioral Healthcare (MBH), these patients will be started on suboxone in the emergency department and then referred to MBH’s Biddeford or Springvale IMAT programs

where they will receive continued, individualized care that best meets their needs and supports ongoing recovery efforts. York Hospital’s Recovery Center’s “Phase Program” with Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) provides an intensive outpatient program for treatment of all substance use disorders. Phase I and Phase II are programs that together provide professional support for 6 months of the recovery process. Nasson Health Care is providing outpatient MAT programs integrating See OPIOID page 15...

~ News ~ Students Bring “Snowmenâ€? and Smiles to Avita WELLS A small group of Wells Junior High School students, who volunteer on a regular basis at Avita of Wells as part of service learning, visited this memory care community at lunchtime on December 20, 2018. They walked the short distance from school to deliver small handmade snowmen created by them and a few others after school. The 70 decorated plush items, made from cloth and rice, also had personalized greeting cards attached for each of the 68 residents. “This was purely their idea (and) not adult driven,â€? said physical education teacher Renèe Savage who, along with Heather Fenderson, created this school program three years ago with just 10 students participating. The seven students visiting on December 20th represented a total of 26 fifth through eighthgrade students currently a part of this project. Four times a week, differing groups of four or five students visit the dining area at Avita to assist staff in serving lunch. While doing so, they have engaged in small talk with staff

and diners and have become acquainted with them, “It is really nice to come over here and serve them food,â€? said Melody Goodwin, a seventh-grade student who added that it is nice to “chit chatâ€? with the residents. Teagan Hludik, who is in the 6th grade, added, “I love it because we see the residents every week and we get to interact with them.â€? Hludik pointed out that some of the residents have families that “don‘t live in the state so they don’t have any people to visit them. When we come, they feel happy because we’ll ‌give them smiles.â€? Jessica Palmer, a sixth grader, added, “I like to see all the people get happy when you serve them‌â€? “I get goosebumps every time I come here watching the intergenerational conversations and assistance,â€? commented Renèe Savage last June. “It’s great for our students. It gives them self-confidence and a sense of purpose.â€? Avita’s Social Program Director Angela Mastrella coordinates student visits with Savage. “The excitement of the students

to be able to give these gifts out to each resident individually was inspiring to witness, said Mastrella. “In return, an incredible smile of gratitude was left on the faces of each resident. Their act of kindness left all of us feeling the magic of the holiday season.

Charitable Component Added to Art Project CAPE NEDDICK To honor Ogunquit’s longstanding history as an artists’ colony and showcase the local artists in the community today, Clay Hill Farm – together with TaleSpinStudios in Ogunquit, launched the #VerandART Project last spring. The local artist outreach program features a new painter every 6-8 weeks at Clay Hill Farm, their collection hung in the Veranda Room for the public to view and enjoy. When recently freshening up his collection at Clay Hill Farm, current featured artist, Paul Noël, asked if a charitable component could be introduced into the project. With a resounding ‘YES’, Clay Hill Farm agreed, and a percentage of proceeds from every piece of art sold from the #VerandArt Project will now go to a local cause. “We are thrilled to infuse this project with giving back,” said Jennifer Lewis of Clay Hill Farm, co-founder of the #VerandART Project. “This project is all about community and collaboration – giving back brings it to the next level. We are so grateful to Paul for getting the ball rolling.”

SOUTH BERWICK The Book Report Network started TeenReads and has been around since 1996. TeenReads is a well-respected site used by Barnes and Noble, Amazon, Twitter, Facebook, and Youtube where books are reviewed and recommended for teens across the country. This site offers opportunities to develop all sorts of Reading Lists. Twice a year this site affords an opportunity for teens to become members of their board. It is a competitive, rigorous process. MMS Language Arts teacher, Tami Schoff, encouraged her students to apply. In December Lucia Wiegert, an 8th grade student, was chosen to be a member of the board. Teen Board members write reviews, write blog posts, answer the monthly Teen Board questions, participate in special features and give much-needed feedback about the site, publishing trends, and pop culture. For her biography, Lucia shared this with readers: Hello! My name is Lucia, an eighth grade student in the

Marshwood School District. High school is a year away (ah!). I am an aspiring photographer, a competitive futsal player, a theatrical girl, one who is eager to learn history, a literature lover and an avid reader. Maine is my home and I do hope it will always be. I happen to be absolutely clumsy and have a tendency to mishear things... a lot. I am considered shy, but my close friends know otherwise... Dystopian, mystery, historical fiction, sci-fi, fantasy: I read it all. A good book seems to click with me by connecting me to the character. After all, “no two persons ever read the same book.” ~ Anonymous.

Autoworks Inspires Help for the Coast Guard KITTERY When Autoworks founder, Stephen Kosacz, heard on National Public Radio that, due to the government shutdown, those serving in the U.S. Coast Guard are not being paid to protect our borders, interdict drug smuggling, or rescue commercial fishermen and recreational boaters in distress, he wondered how he could help them. At first he thought he could use the 42-year-old business’s commercial line of credit to help fund the New Castle station’s payroll. A call to the commanding officer corrected his thinking. “We can’t accept any cash donations due to ethics rules” he was told. He learned that there are 45 men and women working there many of whom commute from Massachusetts. He was told the only thing he might do is purchase $10 gift cards from grocery stores or gas stations because $10 is the maximum allowable by law. “Don’t buy Gift Cards from the bank because they are considered cash.” Kosacz went to a regionally owned grocery store on Woodbury Ave, explained his plan, and ordered 45 $10 Gift cards. “Do you have any shop-

ping to do because this is going to take a while” replied the young woman at the service desk. “No, I am off to buy gas cards, I’ll be back” and then drove to a New England owned gas station chain in Newington to buy 45 more $10 Gas Cards. The cashier was a bit aghast and called an assistant to staff the other register as she opened the sealed gift card packets and scanned each one into the system’s register. In the meantime other patrons lined up to pay for their pizza, drink, and fuel. 20 minutes later the attendant finalized the transaction and printed the 4.5-foot-long register receipt. Step 1 of his mission accomplished, he went back to the grocery store to settle up and collect the food gift cards. Autoworks marketing director Tannye Wold (pictured) and bookkeeper Lisa Lavallee signed all 90 cards with a simple “Thank You”. Wold proceeded to New Castle station to find the gate locked. With her cell phone about to die, she was able to call the station and make the delivery for which the office was most grateful. “This will be a huge help, everyone will really appreciate this” Kosacz posted the deed on the Autoworks Facebook

page and soon customers were coming to make contributions in support. He told them the specifics of what they had to do and to make sure the cards didn’t exceed the $10 limit. And no, this donation is not tax deductible because the Coast Guard is not a 501(c)3 non-profit charity. In these troubling times, simply doing the right thing may help those serving our country and protecting our borders while Washington fails its employees.

Annual Marshwood Middle School Planning Board Approves Permits for Wildlife Center YORK ject raised before entering the PJ and Book Drive Results ELIOT For the fifth year, 8th graders have contributed to their local community. There is a worldwide Pajama Collection Program but MMS students wanted to support local families in need of pajamas and books at this time of year. This year students collected 71 pairs of pajamas from newborn to adult and matched each with at

least two books per pajama size. Eighth graders were rewarded with a day of being able to wear their pajamas to school where during Language Arts classes, students were served hot chocolate by their teachers and shared some of their favorite books read in 2018. Families all over the seacoast benefited from these donations.

The Center for Wildlife received unanimous approval by the York Planning Board for a new conservation medicine and education facility and campus. The organization will begin site prep in the weeks to come and are in the Major Gifts phase of the campaign, securing stretch gifts of $5,000 to $50,000 to help them get to 60% of the pro-

public phase. Gifts can be made as a one-time gift or multi-year pledge, and more than 30 community and board members have made gifts and Naming Opportunities in honor or memory of dear friends and loved ones. If interested in making a major gift towards the campaign, email Kristen at kristen@ thecenterfowildlife.org.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, One of the most aggravating things about my computer is the little box that asks me “Are you sure you want to send this file to the Recycle Bin?” every time I want to delete a file. Is there any way to get rid of this? Thanks, Adam Dear Adam, Yes, you can get rid of this dialog box. Since you are still sending your files to the Recycle Bin, where you can later retrieve them if you change your mind about deleting them, there is no danger of losing your files permenatly by disabling this dialoug box. 1. On your desktop, rightclick the Recycle Bin. 2. Choose Properties from the Shortcut menu. 3. Click the General tab. 4. Click to remove the check mark in front of, “Display Delete Confirmation Dialog”. 5. Click OK. That’s all you have to do! Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, When I am using Word, I sometimes want to adjust the font size so that my text will just fill a certain portion of the page. Is there an easy way to adjust the font one point at a time? Amy Dear Amy, Probably the easiest way to do this is by using keyboard shortcuts. In your Microsoft Word document, select the text you want to adjust by highlight-

ing it. If you want to adjust the size of the entire document, then just press “Ctrl + A” (A stands for All). Once you have the part of your document that you want to change highlighted, all you need to do is use the following keyboard combination to increase / decrease the font size one point at a time. If you want to reduce the size of your font, hold down the Ctrl key and press the [ bracket key (located to the right of the letter P). Each time you press [ your font will be reduced by 1 font size. If you want to increase the size of your font, hold down the Ctrl key and press the ] bracket key (located to the right of the [ bracket). Each time you press ] your font will increase by 1 font size. The nice thing about this keyboard combination is that if you have some words that are larger than others, they will all increase or decrease at the same rate. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have started putting out pictures albums on thumb drive, is that a good or bad idea. Should we invest in an external hard drive to store things? Thanks, Bill Dear Bill, It is a good idea as long as that is not your only copy of the albums. Thumb drives can become corrupted, losing all the data on them (unless you want to

spend more than $500 on data recovery). I would suggest that you save a master copy of the photo albums on DVDs. A DVD or CD disk has a much longer shelf life and is not affected by static or magnetic interference. A cloudbased backup like Carbonite is also a good idea as it also protects your data from physical damage like flood or fire. An external hard drive is a bit more stable than a thumb drive, however, hard drives do eventually fail, so I would never keep my only copy of important files on any hard drive. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Have new Windows 10 computer. Can I install Microsoft Office 2007 or 2010 on my computer? The new Office is good for

one year, while older versions are good for the life of the computer and expensive. Thanks, Dave Hi Dave, You should be able to run either Office 2007 or 2010 on your new Windows 10 Computer. I do want to explain a little bit about the new office. There are actually two different versions of Office 2019. One is subscription based. It lets you purchase a one year subscription and use it on up to 5 devices, including your Mac and tablet. All your work is stored in the cloud so that you can work on your documents in one location, and pick right back up where you left off from another location. Microsoft also sells Office 2019 in a stand-alone version which does not expire after

one year, but you can only install it on one computer, and it will not be continuously updated like the 360 version. If both of those options are not in your price range, there is always the free, open source, version of Office called LibreOffice at www.libreoffice. org. Open source simply means that it was created by a group of volunteers instead of a company. LibreOffice can read files created in Microsoft Office, and save files in Office format as well. a mix of 4-8th grade students performed a series of basic and complex jumping routines that dazzled students and staff. They performed individual and partner synchronized jumping with a long rope and beaded rope. There were routines performed with such names as Double Dutch, the Triangle, and the Egg Beater. There was even a student who tap-danced as part of a jumping routine.

The team is coached by Liz Giles-Brown, a retired physical education and health teacher from South Bristol Elementary School. Giles-Brown said that she formed the Spindrifters 21 years ago making it the first AHA Demonstration Jumping team in Maine. The group has performed at schools from southern York County to northern Aroostook County. For the past 32 years, students at Wells Elementary School have participated in the former Jump Rope for Heart

Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

Josette was born February 27, 1942 in Trenton, NJ, the daughter of Anthony and Catherine Margaret Vizzini DiTullio, and grew up in Yardley, PA, where she graduated from Pennsbury High School, class of 1960. She proudly attended (“we are) Penn State and earned her degree in education. She started her career as an elementary school teacher in Delaware and Pennsylvania, before joining the University of Illinois teacher education program. Continuing her move west, Josette joined Mission Research in Colorado Springs, CO, then returned to the Jersey Shore, working with Prism Physical Therapy, from which she retired. In her retirement, she moved to Kennebunk to be close to her family and loved spending time with her granddaughter Miranda, as well as her work as an Ed Tech with the North Berwick Schools. Josette loved her work but did not let that define her. Her lifelong priority was her family, and carrying on her Mother’s spirit to maintain those important bonds. She loved spending time with her family and friends near and far, loved the beach, especially the Jersey Shore, and found joy in cooking, dancing and listening to music. Survivors include her daughter Danielle Dillman Warren, her husband Will, granddaughter Miranda Hope of Kennebunk, and daughter Kristilyn Dillman Maxwell, her husband Bryan, granddaughters Carson and Rachel Maxwell of Harrisonburg, VA. BUSINESS & FINANCE Maine Real Estate Sales and Prices Up in 2018 AUGUSTA Maine experienced positive growth and set new records in the single-family existing homes real estate sector last year. Both sales and sales prices landed in positive territory. According to Maine Listings, a total of 17,864 homes changed hands in 2018—a 1.31% increase over 2017. Prices jumped a healthy 7.5% to a statewide median sales price of $215,000. The MSP indicates that half of the homes were sold for more and half sold for less. “The sales year 2018 ended with the highest number of reported residential real estate transactions (17,864) and highest median sales price ($215,000) since we began compiling data 20 years ago,” says Peter Harrington, 2019 President of the Maine Association of REALTORS® and Broker/Partner with Malone Commercial Brokers in Portland. “That said, fourth quarter—especially December statistics—show a decline in the number of transactions, though values remain solid. It’s difficult to gauge a market’s direction during the month of December. The true test will come as we move into the spring selling season.” The National Association of Realtors reported December-only sales across the

country eased 10.1% compared to December 2017, while prices rose 2.9% to a national MSP of $255,200. Regionally, home sales in the Northeast decreased 6.8% in December, and prices increased 8.2% to $283,400, comparing December 2018 to December 2017. “We know that some of Maine’s sales decreases are attributable to the partial government shutdown, which has

created consumer uncertainty. The shutdown has delayed or completely suspended some real estate transactions that were in the pipeline for government-guaranteed loans,” adds Harrington. “The USDA Rural Development Program has been non-operational for the entire shutdown and RD-guaranteed loans account for around 10 percent of Maine’s home sale transactions.”

And yes, her one ear does stay curled like that always! She, along with five other recent arrivals of adorable kittens in various colors and equally wonderful personalities, will all be seeking their furever homes this coming Saturday, February 9, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at our Adoption Facility, 251 Country

Animal Welfare Society KENNEBUNK Lawson is a very smart, friendly, affectionate guy. He is a bit sensitive and can get easily overwhelmed so he’s looking for a home with no young kids. Lawson has done ok with some dogs his size but overall he might enjoy just being the only pet in his home. Lawson’s previous owner brought him to a lot of obedience classes and it shows. He does amazingly well in class, walks nicely on a leash, knows commands, and really well behaved. If you decide to take him home, definitely sign him up for obedience classes and he’ll make you look like a star handler! Training classes helps build a bond be-

Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS Jewels and Lucy are the kind of cats that make you feel very loved and very special. They lie on their sides to ask for your loving attention, and if you lie down on the cat room floor, Lucy will climb on your back and rest there, claiming you as her very own property. These 10-year-old sisters lived a happy life together until their owner could no longer care for them. Both adjusted well at our adoption center and

will do great in a home with gentle children. Both are beautiful, in great health, and have no special needs. Jewels and Lucy love to be cuddled. They love snuggling with each other, chasing the laser light, sunbathing in our big windows, and loafing in their cat trees. Both are calm, easy to care for, shorthaired kitties. Jewels is a calico with vivid green eyes. Her sister Lucy is a torti with pale green eyes. They’re forever grooming and washing each other’s faces,

and entertaining each other. They must stay together, so if you are looking to add an adorable pair of kitties to your family, look no further. Because they’re “senior citizens, there’s no adoption fee either. Visit them at our adoption center, 1420 Post Road, next to the Wells Library. You will fall in love!
