Introducing Ogunquit’s Newest Art Collective OGUNQUIT & CAPE NEDDICK A group of distinguished, local visual artists are forming a new group called Ogunquit River Painters. Their intent? To re-establish a community that reflects the rich traditions and styles of the painters who arrived in Ogunquit over a century ago and founded a thriving art colony. Ogunquit has a rich artistic history that traces back the early 1900s, starting with American painter Charles H. Woodbury. The natural beauty of Ogunquit attracted Charles, who along with many of his contemporaries, ended up establishing a thriving summer art colony there. With the opening of the Ogunquit Playhouse in 1933, the town quickly became a popular vacation destination

The Ogunquit Museum of American Art, founded in 1951 by Henry Strater and then known as “The Museum of Art of Ogunquit,” has historically exhibited both past and present artists from the area. This rich legacy of local art

history is what sets Ogunquit apart from other resort towns along the Maine coast. The seasoned artists who founded Ogunquit River Painters, Claire Bigbee, Ric Della Bernarda, Paul Noel, and Doug Taylor, intend to partner with town management, local businesses, and existing art estab-

lishments to promote local artists who will keep those forebears’ traditions alive, in the hopes of strengthening the town’s artistic heritage and attracting new artists. “We not only need to celebrate this rich artistic history, but we have a responsibility to do what we can to continue to bring new art enthusiasts to the area by attracting, encouraging, and supporting artists of all types” says Bigbee. Ogunquit River Painters intends to work with the town to initiate new programs that will attract new artists and art businesses to Ogunquit. Future proposals include a parking program for artists to visit and paint for the day, offering incentives for established galleries to open
