Rotary Club and Front Porch Team Up for Day of Warming

OGUNQUIT Nothing warms a chilly snowy February day like a hot midday meal, and the Ogunquit Rotary Club and The Front Porch joined forces to do just that on Saturday, February 6. Traditionally, the WellsOgunquit Senior Center hosts Days of Warming each Saturday from early January through midMarch. The Ogunquit Rotary Club has sponsored the first Saturday of February for several years, working with various local restaurants to pick up and serve the midday hot meal. This year looked a bit different due to COVID-19 restrictions, but
based on the center’s request, 50 meals were made and served on premise, or delivered by center staff and volunteers to seniors unable to attend in person. The Front Porch covered 100% of the food cost and packed up the meals to go to support the Rotary Club’s fundraising going back to the community, while the club picked up the food, delivered it to the center, served guests, and added homemade Valentine’s Day cupcakes and water to the menu! Long-time Ogunquit Rotary member Joe Boyle has served at the event for years and commented on why he so enjoys
it. “It brings us together as fellows and pulls us together as helpers in our community. I have especially enjoyed serving many members of the community with whom I might otherwise not have gotten to know.” “Since taking over The Front Porch, our commitment to the community has been at the forefront of our mission. During an unprecedented year like this, organizations like Rotary and the Wells-Ogunquit Senior Center need our support more than ever. My team and I look forward to continuing our philSee WARM page 5...
Library Granted $50,000 from King Foundation KITTERY Famed Maine author Stephen King and his wife Tabitha created the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation in 1986 to provide support for Maine communities. It is a private non-profit organization that promotes strengthening and supporting communities and draws upon the values and spirituality of the founders. The Foundation has a special interest in organizations and people who have less
recourse to usual channels of resources, focusing on community-based initiatives in the State of Maine only. On Monday, February 8, it was reported that the Rice Public Library Building will receive a $50,000 grant from the Kings’ organization. Construction is scheduled to start in March on the 132year old Rice Building with the Library Building Committee noting the updating of technol-

The legislature created these family fishing weekends years ago, recognizing the importance of getting people outside and introducing them to a lifetime activity of fishing. ~ News ~ 1898 Booker T. Washington Letter to be Given to Tuskegee Dignitaries SOUTH BERWICK The president of Tuskegee University, a representative of the National Park Service and a descendant of Booker T. Washington will be among those presenting at an historic online event connecting the communities of South Berwick and Tuskegee, AL, on Friday, February 12. The public is invited to watch as dignitaries in Tuskegee officially receive from the people of South Berwick an original letter written in 1898 from Booker T. Washington to Mrs. George Tyson, who owned the Hamilton House in South Berwick. The letter, donated by antique collector Rick Becker of South Berwick, was framed and sent with a plaque that said, “With love from the people of South Berwick to the people of Tuskegee, AL”.
Booker T. Washington, the first principal of Tuskegee University, wrote letters and traveled the country to raise funds for student tuition at what was then known as the Tuskegee Normal School. The dedication of the letter was planned for February 12 because of the significance of that date for both communities. February 12 marks the day, 207 years ago, when South Berwick separated from Berwick and became its own municipality. It also marks the day when, 140 years ago, Gov. Rufus Willis Cobb signed the law establishing the Tuskegee Normal School for the training of Black teachers. The Booker T. Washington letter was written to Emily Tyson, who that same year purchased the Hamilton House. In it, he requested a donation to help pay the tuition of students enter-

ing the Tuskegee institute. “If you could help us for the whole or even a small part of our students tuition it would be greatly lightening our burden,” Washington wrote. The letter will be accepted by a representative of the National Park Service, which will hold the original copy in its archives. A replica will hang in the museum of the Butler Chapel AME Zion Church in Tuskegee, which hosted the extensive or-
ganizing in 1957 that led to the Voting Rights Act. Among the dignitaries who will comment on the letter, the sister city relationship and the need for racial healing are Tuskegee Mayor Lawrence “Tony” Haygood; Dr. Charlotte Morris, Tuskegee University’s interim president; and Marshall Cabiness III, a descendant of Booker T. Washington. Linda Becker whose husband came across the letter, will

their numbers, a crescendo of cawing that slowly fades to an eerie silence, night closing in. As it has for at least 30 years, this flock of mostly American crows arrives in Lawrence, MA, in November, and carries out some of the primordial behaviors that still puzzle the amateur birders and professional ornithologists who study what many of them believe are the world’s most clever and social birds. What brings these thousands of crows–a mix of residents and seasonal migrants from as far as the St. John’s River in Canada — to places like Lawrence for the winter from November to March? Why do they stage so massively in the evenings, then fly off together in the dark to roost elsewhere, then scatter in the morning to forage for food as far as 50 miles away, then return to stage and roost for another night? On Tuesday, February 16 at 7 p.m., York County Audubon will be hosting Dana DuxburyFox and Bob Fox, who will share a wealth of information about crows. After some thought, the Beckers agreed the letter should be given as a gift from their town to Tuskegee. One student from Marshwood Middle School and one student from Tuskegee Public School will each read parts of the letter. These students are among several dozen from the two towns who have been meeting regularly for many months, forming friendships over the internet as they learn about what it means to be Black in Tuskegee or White in Maine. James B. Bartlett, 72 YORK – James B. Bartlett, of York, passed away January, 8, 2021, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born January, 30, 1948, in Saugus, MA. Jim was a graduate of the University of Massachusetts, earning a degree in education. For many years, he taught in Arlington public schools where he also served as president of the teacher’s union. He later earned a law degree from Suffolk University and, after moving to York, opened his own law firm, James B. Bartlett, P.A. In more recent years, he worked for the York law firm of Clark & Howell. Service to community was always a significant part of Jim’s life. After college, he served in the
National Guard. He was elected to the York Board of Selectmen, serving as chairman twice, and was on the board of Old York Historical Society. He was a leader of the Maine chapter of the Make a Wish Foundation and the committee to secure funding for the Coastal Ridge Elementary School, as well as chairman of the Long Sands Bathhouse building committee. He served York Rotary Club as president and as foundation chairman. But the most important part of Jim’s life was the role he played in the lives of his family and friends. He is survived by his devoted wife of 35 years, Susan M. Christmas; siblings, John and Rosalind Bartlett of Billerica, MA, Richard and Debra Bartlett of Mahtomedi, MN, Stephen and Nett Bartlett of Raleigh, NC, Patricia Kelleher from Dennis, MA, Thomas Bartlett of Haverhill, MA, Caroline and Robert Donovan of Yarmouth Port, MA; and many nieces and nephews. A celebration of life will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made in Jim’s name to the Make a Wish Foundation of Maine (www.wish.org/maine).

Ann H. Grinnell, 70 KITTERY – Ann H. Grinnell, an extraordinary person, died on February 2, 2021, of a glioblastoma. Born in Bridgeport, CT on January 25, 1951, Ann grew up in Cohasset, MA. safe in the water and love swimming as she did. She served nine years on the Kittery Town Council, and while chair, led Kittery’s fight to save the Naval Shipyard. She also served many years on the Town’s Planning Board, most of them as chair. Ann inspired many in Kittery to follow her footsteps in service to the community. Helping others was central to Ann. Right after 9/11, she went to Ground Zero with the American Red Cross, delivering meals to emergency response workers. Again in 2010 after the devastating Haiti earthquake, Ann was there helping connect victims with medical services. She also made multiple trips to Haiti, helping build homes and encouraging many in the seacoast to sponsor impoverished children through Partners in Development. Ann leaves behind a devoted family: wife Marge Pelletier; daughter Jody Eye with wife Christi; son Charlie with fiancé Jen; and of course, the perfect dog, Ruby. She is also survived by her siblings: James Grinnell Jr. of New Bedford, MA, Richard Grinnell of Hudson, PQ, Charles Grinnell of Arlington, MA, and Matthew Grinnell of West Newbury, MA; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Tish and Jim Grinnell, and sister Martha. Tribute may be made as donations to the Ann Grinnell Children’s Garden, to be developed as part of the Rice Public Library expansion project, at www.rice.
lib.me.us/donatecreditcards.asp. Checks should be made out to Rice Library Campaign (Grinnell Garden) and sent to the Rice Public Library Corporation, PO Box 561, Kittery, ME 03904. Support will fund the creation and maintenance of a beautiful, living tribute to Ann, an avid lifelong gardener. Due to COVID-19, the family will hold a memorial service at a later date. Bernier-Gelinas FUNERAL HOME
Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

bereaved’s feelings in the patterns of community support which are psychologically beneficial. Flowers, however, express the inexpressible – they are symbolic.
missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists.

FINANCE & CAREER Concerned about ID Theft? Employment File Early, Consider an IRS PIN Workshops for Military Spouses
NATIONWIDE The United States’ tax season is here, and so are the scammers. Con artists use the Social Security numbers of unsuspecting Americans to file phony tax returns and steal refunds. One way to protect this information is to use a Identity Protection PIN issued by the IRS. In fact, a number may have been issued to you last year if you filed a return online. Be aware of online identity theft with these tips.
How the Scam Works Online filers that go through the IRS website and in most cases expect a refund. Instead, a written IRS notice arrives in the mail, stating that more than one tax return was filed using your Social Security number. What happened? Scammers got hold of personal information, typically the account holder’s Social Security number, address, and birth date. They filed your return early and received your refund before you even got around to filing. Tax ID theft is a particularly sneaky con, because victims typically don’t realize they’ve been targeted until they actually file their taxes. Scammers steal tax information in several ways, such as a phishing scam, a corrupt tax preparation service, or the information was exposed in a hack or data breach. Sometimes tax scammers file in the name of a deceased person or steal children’s identities to claim them as dependents. How to Avoid Tax ID Theft Scams File early. The best way to avoid tax identity theft is to file your taxes as early as possible, before a scammer has the chance to use your information; Watch out for red flags. If a written notice from the IRS arrives in the mail about a duplicate return, respond promptly. Or, if an IRS notice arrives stating you received wages from somewhere you never worked, or receive other notices that don’t actually apply to you, contact the IRS office immediately. Another big red flag is if you receive a notice that “additional taxes are owed, the refund will be offset or a collection actions are being taken against you for a year you did not file a tax return” (IRS). Contact
the IRS if you have any suspicions that your identity has been stolen; Protect your Social Security number. Don’t give out your SSN unless there’s a good reason, and you’re sure who you’re giving it to; Research your tax preparer. Make sure your tax preparer is trustworthy before handing over your personal information; If you are a victim of ID theft, consider getting an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN). This is a six-digit number,
which, in addition to your Social Security number, confirms your identity. Once you apply, you must provide the IP Pin each year when you file your federal tax returns. Visit IRS.gov for more information. If you are the victim of tax identity theft in the U.S., contact the IRS at 1-800-908-4490 and consider filing a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at ftc.gov/complaint or by calling 1-877-FTC-HELP. The FTC also offers a personalized identity theft recovery plan at www.identitytheft.gov.

Vaccination Center Launched at St. Christopher Church YORK York Hospital’s search for a spacious location to hold an ongoing vaccination center for at least the next six months is over thanks to the parish community at St. Christopher Church, located on 4 Barrell Lane in York. “We were approached by the town and the local hospital to provide a large space for inoculation efforts, and the parish hall at St. Christopher was perfect for their needs,” said Denis Lafreniere, the director of property management for the Diocese of Portland. “The bishop was very supportive as was Fr. Scott Mower, the pastor of the Parish of the Ascension of the Lord (of

who can help you navigate a skilled rehabilitation stay to help you return to your baseline – especially if you’ve recovered from COVID and not as independent! There are lots of resources available for you here in town.
which St. Christopher is a part).” Last week, Bill Green, the business coordinator for the parish, led hospital officials on a tour of the parish hall. “They were impressed by the facility and thought it was exactly what they needed,” he said. “The vaccination process is not like getting a COVID-19 test where you can schedule a drivethru appointment,” said Erich Fogg, the director of walk-in services for York Hospital. “For instance, with the vaccination, each person has to stay for a 15minute observation period, and having a space where that is possible was necessary.” The parish nor the diocese will receive any profit for hosting the vaccination center, which plans to offer at least 400 daily vaccinations on Mondays through Fridays. The first clinic was held at the location on Monday, February 8. “We’re always committed to helping and providing for the community in any way that we can, particularly in a public health crisis,” said Fr. Mower. York Hospital is now offering online and telephone vaccine
appointment registration for Maine residents, age 70 and over. For more information or to register, visit the hospital’s vaccine website at www.yorkhospital.com/vaccines for reservation instructions as well as updates and information. Interested parties can also call 207752-8685 on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Serving the community is at the very heart of the diocesan mission, not just in times of crisis, but throughout history. For more information about the vaccination center at St. Christopher, contact Jean Kolak at York Hospital at 207-351-2021 or email jkolak@ yorkhospital.com. The Maine CDC reminds that vaccine distribution is a fluid, evolving process and is currently constrained by inconsistent supply. For further info, go to www.maine.gov/ covid19/vaccines.

Maine Walmart and Sam’s Club to Administer COVID-19 Vaccines PORTLAND Walmart and Sam’s Club pharmacies will begin administering COVID-19 vaccines in Maine through the U.S. Federal Retail Pharmacy Program on February 12. Eligible customers can schedule a vaccine appointment via the Walmart and Sam’s Club websites once appointments are available, making it convenient to get vaccinated while allocation lasts. Vaccines will be available to those who meet the current phase of vaccine eligibility which can be found at www. maine.gov/covid19/vaccines. More than 1,000 Walmart and Sam’s Club pharmacies in 22 states are receiving federal vaccine allocations this week, with an emphasis on locations that reach customers in underserved communities with limited access to healthcare. “Ninety percent of the country lives within ten miles of a Walmart. We’re committed to helping people live better – and healthier lives – in Maine, and we take that role very seriously,” said Dr. Cheryl Pegus, Executive Vice President, Health & Wellness. “We want to help the country re-open, but we can only achieve that through widespread COVID19 vaccination. We’re proud to work together with the federal government, states, communities, customers and associates to expand access to the vaccine and reach that goal.” Walmart is partnering with the CDC and states to move as quickly as possible to help administer vaccines to eligible populations in participating states. For a list of stores in each state administering the vaccine under the federal agreement, visit www. corporate.walmart.com/covid -vaccine. “Partnering with private pharmacies to administer vaccine in all corners of our state is another important step in our efforts to get shots into the arms of as many Maine people as quickly as possible,” said Governor Janet Mills. “This partnership, coupled with increasing supplies of vaccine from the Federal government, will help us save the lives of Maine people most at risk of suffering and dying from COVID-19 and get our state back to normal.” In addition to the 22
states where Walmart will support the vaccination efforts as part of the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program, the retailer is also currently administering vaccinations under the jurisdiction allocation in 11 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Vaccine supply and eligibility will vary based on state and local guidelines. In addition to appointments, the scheduler will provide a digital reminder when it is time to return for the second vaccine, which is why customers are asked to create a profile, helping to ensure customers receive the second dose of the vaccine in the timeframe required. You do not have to be a member of Sam’s Club to sign-up for an appointment. Appointments are available seven days a week, but exact timing will vary based on local availability of the vaccine.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, I have been a reader of your column and still find something useful and new to learn after all these years. I have a question regarding decluttering: We have decided that this year will be our year of decluttering; I want to rip our music CD collection and save them on our PC/Mac with backup to disc. The idea is to get rid of the 300 odd CD’s. We have used the Mac and scanned several into iTunes; created playlists, sync’ed with iPods, iPhones, iPads. This has been fine, actually pretty good. But I have a concern that iTunes is too locked into Apple hardware (and recording format, AAC). What happens 10 years from now when we move away from Apple (or iTunes isn’t supported), and
there are different preferred formats? Future-proof portability? Salome Dear Salome, I have a couple of cautions for you in your quest for less clutter: First, the physical CD you purchased, is your proof of ownership. Once you have ripped the music to your computer, you should either store or destroy the CDs because if you sell them or give them away, you are selling or giving your ownership of the music on your computer as well. Second, is the format you are storing them in. When I rip my CDs, I store them in MP3 format, which is a more universal format. Your apple devices will be able to play MP3 files, along with most other music devices.

If the digital copy of your music is your only copy, you want to make sure they are backed up. I like to keep my music in three locations. On my computer, on a backup drive, and on an online server. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have a computer with Windows 10. Why do computers have a power button that you turn it on with, but you are not supposed to turn it off with? All my other devices can be turned on and off with the power button. Randy Dear Randy, Actually, if you make a few changes in your settings, you can use the power button to shut down your computer safely. Here is how: 1. On your Windows 10 computer, tap the windows logo key on your keyboard and type: Power Options. Click on, “Power Options” in the search results. 2. This will open the Control Panel in the power options section. Click on “Choose what the power button does” in the left hand section. 3. Now, you will see a section for power button and lid settings. You can select different settings if you are running on bat-
tery power or plugged in. Click the drop down arrow for each section and click on “Shut down” to select it. 4. Click the “Save Changes” button at the bottom of the window to save your changes. Now, when you press and release the power button, your computer will begin the shutdown process and turn off when finished. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I appreciate so much all the help you give about computers. Have used many of your suggestions to fix a problem. My ques-
tion is about Gmail. I have an account there for storing some of my regular emails from Thunderbird. I cannot find the forward button in Gmail. How do I forward an email from there. Thank you, Mary Dear Mary, When you are reading an email in the Gmail window, there is an arrow in the upper-right of the window with a small triangle after it. The arrow is for replying to the email message. Click on the triangle to the See COMPUTER page 20...

Ecomaine Calls for Upcycled Inventions from Students
STATEWIDE Ecomaine announced that, continuing the success of its inaugural “Upcycle 2020 Challenge”, it will continue its upcycling invention contest for students to compete for a $500 prize for their school’s green team, STEM club, or project graduation. Last year, the challenge saw entries like: hair scrunchies made from old clothing, furniture made from old tires, and movie projectors made from all kinds of would-be-junk materials. The Upcycle Challenge invites students to find items that would normally be thrown away and create an all-new, super-useful invention from them. “While we realize that schools are challenged by the pandemic and uncertainty, our aim this year is to provide an activity that promotes creative thinking about our waste materials, and that can be achieved with teachers’ support, no matter the setting,” said Matt Grondin, Ecomaine’s Communications Manager. Students will have until March 19 to unveil their upcycled ...COMPUTER from page 17 right of the arrow, and you will find a list of other things you can do with the message like reply, forward, print, delete, etc. This will allow you to forward any emails you desire. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Elizabeth has answered thousands of computer questions over the years. To submit a question, email her at elizabeth.boston@ gmail.com. ...WEBINAR from page 10 that live in Maine, the Center for Wildlife will introduce the different wild animals the Center cares for medically and discuss how we can all support our wild neighbors, especially when the temperatures drop. Marine Mammals of Maine’s webinar will dive into a discussion on two species of seal that can only be found in Maine’s waters in the wintertime. Students will learn what makes these snow-loving marine mammals unique and what to do if the seals need help. During the interactive webinars, students will be encouraged to ask questions, explore the animals’ world virtually and engage their feelings of empathy and compassion. These forty-minute webinars are presented free of charge and intended for students in grades K-8. They will take place daily at 10 a.m. starting Tuesday, February 16 via the meeting app Zoom. To obtain the Zoom credentials, RSVP to participate in any/all of the webinars at www.animalwelfaresociety.org/ youth/kindness-week.
inventions, either by sending their submission as a document, photo, or video, to Ecomaine. Finalists will be chosen by Ecomaine’s Outreach and Recycling Committee based on the following criteria: Incorporation of post-consumer materials; inge-
nuity and functionality of a new “upcycled” invention; inclusion of students in the design and construction process; school (teacher, coach, administrative) leadership and approval. Finalists will then be selected by popular vote on social media by Earth Day 2020.
Ox Stamp for the Lunar New Year
...WOODBURY from page 8 for color and was skilled at crafts – knitting, tatting, beadwork, and was an award-winning rug hooker. Sally enjoyed a successful career working for Erie Scientific, as a board member for an Oracle Users Group, and as a volunteer for C.H.A.D. In retirement, she lived many years in her cabin at Carrabassett Valley. She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Woodbury, and grandchildren, Keenan
Woodbury and Hayden Thompson. Also, sister Deborah (Starkey) Scates and family, several cousins mentioned in recent conversations with Sally, and ex-husband Ken Woodbury. The family would like to thank cousin Maureen Raynes for her support during Sally’s short illness. Sally was predeceased tragically by her beloved son Josiah at age nine. She will be missed by family, and a close-knit group of friends, near and far. Per Sally’s request there will be no formal service, but please enjoy a Flo’s Special hot dog or a Moe’s Italian sub in her memory!
STATEWIDE The U.S. Postal Service celebrates the Lunar New Year with the release of the Year of the Ox Forever stamp. The Year of the Ox begins February 12, 2021 and ends January 31, 2022. The Year of the Ox is second in a new series of Lunar New Year stamps introduced in 2020. The mask on the stamp design incorporates elements with symbolic meaning. Several of the patterns were created
with the style of Asian textiles in mind, as well as purple flowers that represent the arrival of spring, which Lunar New Year also signals in Chinese culture. The star in the center of the ox’s head references the celestial themes of the Chinese zodiac. Preorders for the Year of the Ox stamps can be made online at www.usps.com or by calling 800-782-6724.
