Operation Love Sends Goods to Troops KENNEBUNK During the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, troops are traditionally remembered with packages sent as the thought of not being home with loved ones can be unbearable. However, once the holidays are over, many service- men and women may begin to feel isolated as packages and letters slow down. Being away from loved ones is difficult enough but as the holiday of love approaches, a bitter reminder of being away

overseas and away from family and friends is upon them. Many train themselves to think that Valentine’s Day is merely just another day. Nvest’s goal with this initiative is to remind at least some of our service- men and women that everyone from home is thinking of them, cheering for them, praying for them, appreciate their sacrifice and that they are loved! Each year starting after Christmas, Nvest has commit-

ted to promoting “Operation: Love… From Home”. Nvest will collect goods that we believe service- men and women miss most while being overseas including handwritten notes and cards from area school children, package and ship these goods in time to arrive for Valentine’s day. With hope this endeavor will grow each year so that one day the same can be accomplished for multiple units serving overseas. See LOVE page 2...

Resort to Host Fundraiser to Benefit Australian Wildfire Relief KENNEBUNKPORT The Australian community has been devastated by the largest wildfire surge in its history. Over 3,000 homes have been destroyed, 27 million acres burnt, and 1.25 billion animals killed. To help with relief efforts, the Nonantum Resort is hosting a night of live entertainment, silent and live auctions, local restaurant bites, and a beer/wine cash bar in support of the Australian wildfire relief. 100% of proceeds will be donated to the Global Giving Australian Wildlife Relief Fund. The event will be held at York County Community Col-

lege, 112 College Drrive in Wells on Tuesday, February 25, 5-8 p.m. Auction items include: Maine Redclaws game tickets and a signed basketball; spin classes at Maine Revolution; gift certificates for David’s Restaurant; an aged brass lamp from

The Lighthouse Distribution Corp.; a personal training package from Maine Warrior Gym; and more. Tickets for the event can be purchased at https://nonantumrelief.eventbrite.com or via phone at 207-967-4050 for just $25. For those who want

by WHS teachers Janet O’Donnell and Nadyne MacDonald along with their students, The Wells Street Journal continues moving through time as relevant as ever presenting school and sports news for students and staff at Wells High School. Currently, three editions are printed per school year. Once a monthly publication, the paper’s editions now coincide with the change of seasons. In the early years, the paper’s staff did not have the use of word processing programs, digital cameras, and other devices often taken for granted in 2020. Instead, the paper was produced with typewriters and mimeograph machines. But now the design of the paper’s pages is created online. Currently, about 200 copies are printed per edition in a magazine format complete with a glossy cover. It is distrib-

uted free to the student body and made available to the public in the lobby of the Wells-Ogunquit CSD Superintendent’s office. Teacher Dawn Wentland is now the paper’s advisor and editor. She commented that her students meet in class daily where they, like former students, strive to “leave their own mark” in reporting and photographing about school issues and happenings. Current topics and sections, much like in the past, include feature articles, school plays, sports summaries, survey results, recipes, school calendars, and puzzles. This winter students are working on a spring issue. For example, Ashton Jacobson-Theriault and James Evangelou are co-authoring an article about the computer game Madden NFL 20. Others on the staff have been conducting student opinion polls with Google’s ‘Who’s Who?’ Wentland wants to maintain the high standards that others have set in steering the paper. In 2005, under the direction of then WHS teacher and newspaper adviser Jen Lacher-Starace, the Wells Street Journal was recognized by the Maine Center for Student Journalism with the James Russel Wiggins Award. In 2017, then Wells Street Journal staff member Bri-

anna Christie won a writing contest and was invited to represent Maine at the Al Neuharth Free Spirit Journalism Conference at the Newseum in Washington D.C. Wentland credits Christie with being the one who was instrumental in moving the school paper forward into a magazine format. Wentland pointed out that her student crew is small this school year with only four students. She indicated that in the previous two school years, the staff was larger and produced more content covering a variety of subjects ranging from “A History of the Origins of the English Language” by Matthew Chase to “Ghosts on the Coast” by Katy Cafaro. Wentland commented that many of her staff in 20182019 are now in college with several of them reporting for collegiate student newspapers. Nonetheless, Wentland expects this year’s class to continue to provide “a forum for student voices” and be motivated to meet

~ News ~ Coleman Wins WJHS Spelling Bee WELLS Wells Junior High School 8th grade student Sam Coleman emerged the top speller in this year’s Wells Junior High School Spelling Bee held on January 15. An equally excellent speller, 6th grader Jacob Ouellet, achieved runner-up status. Students from 5th through the 8th grade classes were eligible to compete with their peers and become one of the 12 finalists (three from each grade) in this contest held before an au-

dience of students, school staff and parents in the Ward Gymnasium. WJHS teachers Julie Esch and Marilyn Zotos were the spelling bee organizers. “The spellers all rose to the challenge,” commented Esch who teaches English and Language Arts (ELA). “What a fun event for all.” “This spelling bee was the best in my 15 years of being in-

volved in it,” said Zotos who also teaches ELA. It was really a battle right to the end. It was very exciting. And as I said earlier (to the audience), it’s just as exciting as an athletic event.” She indicated that she was encouraged by the performance of the Bee’s contestants in an era where teachers have to compete with “texting” in teaching proper spelling. “We need to fight for spelling,” she added. “Really good,” said Jacob Ouellet about participating in

on March 21. The 93rd Scripps National Spelling Bee will begin on May 24 in Fort Washington, MD, with first place taking home $50,000.

Electric School Bus Incentives AUGUSTA Rep. Dan Hobbs, D-Wells, offered his support for LD 1894, An Act To Incentivize the Purchase of Electric Public School Buses, before the Legislature’s Education and Cultural Affairs Committee recently. The bill, which is sponsored by Sen. Eloise Vitelli, D-Arrowsic, and cosponsored by Hobbs, would encourage the Department of Education to meet a goal of transitioning Maine’s public school bus fleet to 100% all-electric school buses by 2040. It would also require the Department to establish a training program for school bus drivers, mechanics and transportation directors. “Every day, school buses take millions of cars off the road by picking up students

the contest. He admitted, however, that he was worried about the outcome but concluded, “It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.” All 12 contestants displayed a show of spelling talent with none being eliminated for many of the earlier rounds. Coleman competed in the York County Spelling Bee which took place February 4 at Biddeford Middle School, and was won by Sebastian Shields from Saco with Nicholas Theriault from Noble as runner-up. They will move on to compete in the Maine State Spelling Bee

That being said, school buses are not completely beneficial for the environment. 95% of the school buses in the United States are diesel powered,” said Hobbs. Hobbs, who has worked in the transportation sector for more than three decades, currently serves as a school bus driver in York County. “Not only will an electric school bus fleet have a positive effect on our environment, electric school buses will also serve as an important example for our students and show them the environmental impact that our consumer choices have,” said Hobbs. “As a school bus driver myself, I can’t stress enough how impressionable our young people are, and we must set the right example.” A work session will be scheduled at a later date, at which time the committee will consider any amendments to the bill and vote on a recommendation to the full Legislature. Library Seek Items to Help Raise Money for Library

The Friends of the South Berwick Library have raised $35,000 in 10 years from selling donated items on Ebay! The new goal is to reach $40,000 and more items are needed. Many thanks go to dedicated volunteer and Ebay sales person, Sally Hunter, who gathers, posts, monitors and ships donated items all over the world with proceeds from the sales going to support library programs. The Friends seek items “smaller than a breadbox”, perhaps unique and old items, items in the back of cabinets and drawers that might have some Ebay sales value (pottery, glassware, silver, etc.). Recently a supporter who previously lived in Chicago donated an old Chicago Blackhawks hockey jersey that sold for $150. This is an easy way to declutter and donate to the Library while not costing the donor anything. The Friends suggest donors check Ebay for themselves to see if their items may have value. Often Ebay shoppers are looking to add to their collections. Unsold items are eventually donated to local non-profit thrift shops. Items may be left at the South Berwick Library on 27 Young Street, and questions may be sent to Sally Hunter at salmick1@comcast.net. To view the items for sale on the library’s eBay page, visit www.ebay.com/ usr/fosblibrary?_trksid=p2053788. m1543.l2754.

When you have money to handle an emergency, it helps keep stress at bay. We recommend saving six to nine months of expenses as an emergency fund.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~

Dear Computer Lady, How do I get rid of content on my Facebook wall that I don’t want to see? Thanks, Joyce Dear Joyce, It depends on if the content you want to get rid of is from one of your friends or an ad. If the content says, “Suggested Post” at the top, you are looking at an advertisement. If you click on the down arrow in the upper-right corner of the post, you will see a drop down list with options. The options on a suggested post allow you to hide the ad and tell Facebook to show you fewer ads like the one you are hiding. If the post is written by one of your friends, the drop down list will allow you to hide just the post, or to unfollow the person and not see any of their posts. If your friend has shared a post from another page or

person, you will also have the option of hiding all posts from that page or person. This should allow you to have a little bit of control over what you see on your Facebook wall. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, How do I make a backup of my Windows Live Mail contacts? John Dear John, The best way to save your contacts in Windows Live Mail is to export them to a text list and then save the text list on your backup media. Since I don’t have WLM installed on my computer, I had to check on the Microsoft website for directions. 1. Open Windows Live Mail 2. In the lowerleft corner of the window, click on “Contacts. 3. Click, “Export” on the ribbon at the top of the

window. 4. Click to select .csv as the format for your export. 5. Click “Browse” and find a place to save your contacts, enter a name for the backup file, then click “Save”. 6. Click “Next” and click to select the information you want to save. 7. Click “Finish”. Once you have created the backup file, you can save it with the rest of your backup. Elizabeth

Dear JG, It appears that Windows 10 does not come with a DVD player, but you can get a good, open source (free) media player and install it on your Windows 10 computer. I have used VLC Media Player from www.videolan.org and it works quite well. You can download it from their website and once installed you can use it to play your DVDs. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady, I have a laptop with Windows 10, and I wanted to play a DVD movie on the laptop. When I put in the DVD, Windows 10 said there was no program installed to play the DVD, and then wanted me to buy a movie player for fifteen dollars. I thought a movie player came with Windows, do I really have to buy one from Microsoft? Thanks, JG

Dear Computer Lady, I’m thinking of preserving all my paper photos by scanning them into FastStone image viewer – is this a good way to go? Should I then back this up also to Carbonite. I have never used or signed up for Carbonite, or would an external drive be good enough? I would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you, Salome

Preserving your collection of photos by scanning them into your computer is a great idea. Not only do you have them stored in a convenient format, but you can easily make copies of the photos on disk and share with your family and friends. When you use FastStone Image Viewer to scan your photos, you are saving them on your computer, not in FastStone itself. You should end up with a collection of .jpg files in your “Pictures” folder. As long as you have a copy of those pictures in a local backup and an offsite backup (like carbonite) your photos will be well protected. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Dear Salome,

Health & Fitness T-Mobile Shares Insights to Types of Phone Relationships Whether you’re married or single, chances are there’s another significant other in your life you engage with even more regularly — on a daily, hourly, or maybe even moment-by-moment basis: your phone. A growing number of people consider their phone an extension of themselves. For others, their device is more like a best friend, or

even a soul mate. For the rest of us our device functions as a kind of semi-sentient presence we happen to spend a vast amount of time with. if you’re curious about your relationship with your phone here are five common types: 1. The Codependent Partner: Consider this: nearly three out of every four Americans keep their phones within five feet at all times. What’s more, one

study found that 46% of us check our phones before we get out of bed in the morning, and 75% keep our phones powered up 24 hours a day. It’s no wonder then that many people separation anxiety when they’re away from their phone. A classic symptom of codependency. 2. The Nagging Spouse: “It’s time to wake up.” “Your conference call is coming up in 10 minutes.” “Time to stand up

and move a little.” “Reminder: Pay Utility Bill.” “Your screen time is up 50 percent from last week.” With the constant barrage of alarms, reminders and notifications our phones deliver each day, you’d think we’d been married to them for years. But unlike an actual nagging spouse you can always turn notifications off or manage them to mitigate stress. 3. The Love/Hate: Smartphones. We hate them when they take so much of our attention and love them for making our lives endlessly easier the next. This love/hate relationship can serve as a source of both stress and serenity, loneliness and connection. Like any rela-

tionship that pings from one extreme to the other, for this to work in the long run it’s important to remember you need a steady dose of good to balance out the bad, and even search for middle ground when possible. (That’s what “silent mode” is for, right?) 4. The On-Again, OffAgain: In an attempt to be more present, you’ve probably ditched your phone before, or at least tried. Maybe you lasted a full 44 days phone-free. Maybe it was a weeklong separation, a weekend away or simply a phone-free dinner out with friends. Whatever your breakup history, chances are you and your phone have gotten back together again — likely many times. Don’t feel like a failure! See PHONE page 13...

Health & Fitness New Funding to Target "Emerging" Young Adults YORK York Hospital’s Choose To Be Healthy Coalition is pleased to announce the addition of a new substance use

$750,000 to Help Mainers with Substance Abuse and Mental Illness WASHINGTON, D.C. Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Angus King (I-ME) announced today that the Maine Department of Corrections has been awarded $750,000 to support individuals in the criminal justice system who have mental illness or co-occurring mental illness and substance use issues. The funding, which was awarded through the Justice and Mental Health Collaboration Program, is intended to increase collaboration between law enforcement and treatment services. “Mainers deserve access to quality health care, including services to assist individuals with mental health and substance use disorders,” said

Senators Collins and King in a joint statement. “This important funding will support treatment programs to help incarcerated Mainers who are struggling with these issues to achieve recovery and reintegrate into their communities.” The Justice and Mental Health Collaboration Program awards funds to state and local governments to improve services for individuals with mental health and substance use issues within the criminal justice system.

on targeting the “emerging” or young adult population, ages 18-25. The work will include collaborations between York County Community College, local Adult Education Centers, the York County District Court, as well as local hospitality businesses. Projects include: Offering Prime For Life Universal (PFLU) classes in local Adult Education. PFLU is an evidence based prevention program to

help people learn to reduce their risks of alcohol and drug related problems; Implementing PFLU for individuals who are involved in the Court System; Implementing E-Checkup at York County Community College, which is a confidential online assessment about substance use behaviors and provides resources for support; Substance use education offered to local business’s in addition to existing Responsible Seller Server training; A workgroup that meets monthly to share experiences and expertise.

Currently, data shows that in York County, 55% of emerging adults report drinking alcohol in the last 30 days, with 35% of those reporting binge drinking (BRFSS, 20132016). Data also shows that 18.8% of adults ages 18-34 report marijuana use in the past 30 days (BRFSS, 20132016). ...PHONE from page 12 While it’s nearly impossible for many of us to call it quits with our phones for good, there are a few healthy steps you can take for a digital detox every so often. Plus, as they say, distance makes the heart grow fonder! 5. The (Almost) True Love: Our phones are easy to fall in love with — who else answers any and every question we may have, helps us find rides, order food, play music and seemingly exist to endlessly entertain us? But there can be such a thing as too much phone love, especially when it interferes with real human relationships. As much as we rely on our phones, making sure they don’t take priority over the people we love means that any relationship you have with your device will be a healthier one. Remember to use that phone for its primary purpose — connecting with others. So text your loved ones this Valentine’s Day. Except your mom – you should call her instead. Oh yeah, and send flowers. You can use your phone for that, too. The Weekly Sentinel does not endorse any products or services suggested by thirdparty sources.

from the Center for Lyme Action (CLA) for her leadership in the pursuit of a cure for Lyme disease. Following the award presentation, Senator Collins delivered the opening address at the CLA’s inaugural Washington, D.C., Fly-In dinner. “Thanks to the knowledge and dedication of the Center for Lyme Action, Lyme disease is finally receiving the attention this growing health threat deserves,” said Senator Collins. “I am grateful for this recognition. With the national effort the Kay Hagan Tick Act sets into motion, including the allocation of additional federal resources, I am optimistic that we can better protect the health of more Americans. With the effective advocacy from the Center for Lyme Action, we will identify, control, and knockout these devastating diseases.” “Lyme is a frustrating and debilitating disease, but it’s a problem we can solve,” said Bonnie Crater, co-founder of the Center for Lyme Action. “It is our honor to present Senator Collins with the Congressional Lyme Champion Award for her extraordinary leadership in finding a cure for Lyme disease.” The incidence of Lyme and other tick-borne diseases has exploded over the past 15 years.

In 2003, Lyme disease infected around 30,000 Americans. The latest estimates show there are nearly half a million Americans suffering from Lyme. In Maine, there were a record 2,079 newly reported cases of Lyme disease last year, nearly triple the number of cases in 2010. Other tick-borne diseases are also on the rise – in Maine, for example, Anaplasmosis and Babesiosis have increased several-fold in this same period. The Bangor Daily News reported that the University of Maine’s Tick Lab found that nearly 40% of Maine deer ticks submitted in 2019 tested positive for Lyme disease. In September, Senator Collins, the Chairman of the Aging Committee, convened a field hearing at the UMaine Tick Lab, where experts and witnesses discussed the criti-

cal need to pass the Kay Hagan Tick Act that she authored with Senator Tina Smith (D-MN). Senators Collins and Smith’s legislation was signed into law in December. This bill applies a three-pronged public health approach to address Lyme and other vector-borne diseases, authorizing $150 million over a five-year period. Senators Collins and Smith renamed the bill in honor of former Senator Kay Hagan, who passed away on October 28, 2019, due to complications from the tick-borne disease known as the Powassan virus. Center for Lyme Action is a non-profit organization dedicated to growing federal funding for Lyme disease in an effort to make Lyme disease easy to diagnose and simple to cure.

Weekly Recipe: Red Velvet Cake Ingredients for the cake: 2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon cocoa 1-1/2 cups granulated sugar 2 eggs 1-1/2 cups canola oil 1 teaspoon vinegar 1 (1-ounce) bottle red food coloring 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 cup buttermilk

Ingredients for the frosting: 1/2 cup margarine 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese 1 box confectioners’ sugar, sifted 1/2 teaspoon vanilla 1 cup chopped lightly toasted pecans

Directions for the cake: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour 3 (9-inch) round layer cake pans. Sift flour, baking soda and coco together. Beat sugar and eggs

together in a large bowl. In a separate bowl mix together oil, vinegar, food coloring, and vanilla. Add to the bowl of eggs and sugar and beat until combined. Add the flour mixture and the buttermilk to the wet mixture by alternating the buttermilk and dry ingredients. Always start with the flour and end with the flour. Pour batter into pans. Tap them on the table to level out the batter and release air bubbles. Bake for 25 minutes or until a cake tester inserted near the middle comes out clean but be careful not to over bake or you’ll end up with a dry cake. Let layers cool on a wire rack for about 10 minutes before turning out of pan. Cool completely before frosting.

Directions for the frosting: This is the “official” cream cheese frosting recipe but we always use about 1-1/2 recipes on each cake to cover it well. Let margarine and cream cheese soften to room temperature. Cream well. Add sugar and beat until mixed but not so much that the frosting becomes “loose”. Add vanilla and nuts. Spread between layers and on top and sides of cake.

Carrie does well in our community free roam room and would do best in a home with one or two other non-dominant cats or on her own as the center of all of your attention. Emma’s Angels NORTH BERWICK Panda is a very sweet girl who is about seven years old, probably a Pitbull mix. She is spayed and up to date on her shots. She loves to eat fruits and vegetables, especially when we go on hikes - Panda always manages to find the berries and the yummy grasses. She is so affectionate and gives many kisses and wiggles her whole body to say “Hello! I love you!” Overall she would be described as loyal, intelligent and playful. Emotionally she will be successful in a home where she has access to a space where she can run around, with someone who isn’t gone most of the day. She has been unpredictable with other dogs and cats, Truly this dog is a beautiful and kind spirit who has main-

ue although we’re closed. People are making appointments to meet kitties. We’ve had shy longterm residents being chosen by wonderful, cat-savvy people who will give these kitties wonderful lives. Despite the tough time we have been experiencing, the kindness of our friends is seeing us through! Sally arrived at Safe Haven from midcoast Maine as a wish granted to Soulful, a kitty friend who had been transported months earlier. We transferred Soulful to our facility because she was in dire need of medical care, sunshine and love. She had been stuck in a dark cage next to her friend Sally. They were one another’s comfort. Soulful was semi-feral and fought us trying to medicate her, or go to the vets. Sally was doing well and we knew she and her friend would be happier together. So we brought Sally to her. Sadly, Soulful and Sally only had a short time together. Soulful succumbed to her illness and had to be euthanized. Sally carries on without her BFF. She’s in a sunny room with other kitties but she’s very shy, quiet and hasn’t bonded with any other kitty. So she could be adopted

solo as long as she gets lots of love. Sally is a lovely, domestic shorthair with patches of color on her white coat. She deserves lots of love and dedication. Please consider making an appointment to meet her 646-1611. Our Thrift Shop, 1517 Post Road, needs volunteers, donations of items that are in excellent condition and unique or helpful. We will soon begin working on our second Wells location and we’re all so excited. At that time we’ll need some strong backs and donations of building supplies and handy volunteers to do some painting and carpentry. Please call Joyce at 207-229-8314. Thank you!

Richard “Dick” Desmarais, 82 OGUNQUIT – Dick Desmarais of Ogunquit, the legendary speedy athlete from Sanford, passed away peacefully at home on February 1, 2020, holding the hand of his daughter-in-law Tina who he loved so much and who had been so devoted to his care in his heroic, long battle with Parkinson’s disease. Considered to easily be one of the best football players and all-around athletes to have ever come from the state, Dick’s strength and exceptional speed was incomparable to all opponents who faced him. He excelled and shattered records in every sport he played including baseball, basketball and track as a Sanford undergraduate. He went on to become a multifaceted, shining standout at Boston University, playing for the Terriers. In 1961 Dick turned pro choosing to play for the Ottawa

Rough Riders in the Canadian Football League after getting several offers from national CFL and NFL ball clubs including the Boston Patriots and NY Giants. His phenomenal gameplay had earned him the starting running back position for the Rough Riders, beating out fan favorite Joe Kelly who had helped the team earn the Grey Cup the year before. When Dick was introduced in the first game, he was soundly booed by the Ottawa fans, but the boos soon turned to cheers after a few short weeks when his caliber of play showed the fans that he was worthy of the coaches decision and was named Rough Rider Rookie Of The Year. In 2008 he was inducted into the Maine Sports Hall Of Fame. Dick had worked summers as an Ogunquit Lifeguard prior to his CFL career and enjoyed his life, family and work to the fullest, eventually becoming a top national salesman for the Nokia Corporation. Because of his easy going, strong character, Dick was loved by friends, family and fans in numbers too lengthy to list and will certainly be a hard loss to many. He was the son of proud parents, Paul and Albertine Desmarais of Sanford. He was predeceased by his beautiful wife Linda Desmarais in 2004 after raising their own family in Andover, MA, and having moved to Ogunquit with her, and then shorty after by his daughter, Lisa Desmarais. He had also very recently lost both brothers, Roger

Desmarais of Sanford, Raymond Desmarais of Biddeford, and long-time friend, “Woody” Haselton of Vero Beach, FL. All being very close to him. He had also always deeply felt the loss of his sisters, Vivian Masse and Rachel Gelinas-Hotham many years ago. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, David and Tina Desmarais of Ogunquit, and son Richard R. Desmarais Jr. of Houston, TX. Dick regretfully leaves his beloved large extended family and many friends, including his dear sister Doris Lavoie who he otherwise wants to know he loves one and all and promises to meet each again to embrace. The family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to not only every single health care professional involved in his care but especially to the York Hospital Hospice program nurses and aides who cared so well for our hero in his struggle which helped fill his final days with comfort and happiness. We would like to also express our heartfelt love to caregiver Rachel Angis of Sanford, who went above and beyond duty giving him such good care as well, taking him for enjoyable rides to see the ocean almost daily. At this time, it is planned that private services will be held late spring. To share a memory or leave a message of condolence, please visit Dick‘s Book of Memories Page at www.bibberfuneral.com Arrangements are in care of Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells.

Elaine E. Hatch, 84 NORTH BERWICK – Elaine E. Hatch passed away peacefully on January 31, 2020, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough. She was born in Boston, MA, on September 23, 1935, to Alfred Hynes and Agatha (Varrecchio) Hynes. At age nineteen, she married Nelson Hatch and for 24 years raised two children together at their home in Kennebunk. Elaine took pride in being a homemaker and enjoyed spending time with her husband and family at their camp on Bauneg Beg Lake in Sanford. In 1976 she moved to Wells in order to care for John and Grace Kimball and in 1989 moved to Deerwood Park in Wells. Since 2006 she lived at Simpson Meadows in North Berwick where she made many friends for whom she was deeply grateful. Elaine was a caring person and for this reason many people thought of her as a second mother or grandmother. Her door was always open to anyone who wanted to come in; she would do anything she could to help someone she knew was in need. Friends and family remember her baking pies, faithfully writing them notes on their

We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

Wildcats Hockey Advance in South Quarterfinal

Cheerleaders Participate in Cheers from the Heart SOUTH BERWICK In 1999 the Wells High School Cheerleaders established Cheers from the Heart, a charity benefit cheerleading competition, as a way to give back to home town communities. Over the last 21 years, Cheers from the Heart has donated over $270,000 to local charities, families, and children in need. On February 1, both Marshwood High School and Marshwood Middle School cheer teams participated in the 22nd Cheers from the Heart Invitational. Both teams put on a wonderful display of athleticism

and sportsmanship. Next week, MHS Cheerleaders will be heading to the Augusta Civic Center

to compete in the state championship, after placing 3rd in the Regional Championships.

VARSITY SCHEDULE York High School Boys Varsity Basketball PORTLAND The York/Marshwood/ Traip Wildcats beat Portland/ Deering 3-2 with three un-
