Grandson of Aviation Pioneer to Speak at Library KITTERY Everyone knows Kittery is a Navy town, steeped in the lore of undersea vessels. Who could have guessed it also boasts a connection to aircraft history? In aviation and military circles, the name Sikorsky is as synonymous with the helicopter as the rest of the world links the Ford name to the automobile. Later this month local resident Igor Sikorsky III will share insights at Rice Public Library about the remarkable career of his grandfather, who is considered “the Father of the Helicopter.” “It’s impossible to tell the story in an hour,” Igor III acknowledged. “The conversation doesn’t end at the end of the talk.” The original Igor Sikorsky was a pi-

oneer aviator, inventor and entrepreneur. While he may not have been the first person to create the helicopter, he was the visionary who achieved mass production. He launched what became known as the Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation in 1923, just a few years after immigrating to the United States. His helicopters were utilized by the military of both the United States and the United Kingdom during World War II. Later the company developed such wellknown choppers as the UH-60 Blackhawk, of Black Hawk Down fame, and for decades has provided the presidential helicopter known as Marine One. But Igor III wants to emphasize that his grandfather’s legacy extends beyond helicopters. In fact, his talk is entitled

“The Three Careers of Igor I Sikorsky,” and billed as “a remarkable life described with personal anecdotes about his inventions, wisdom and beliefs.” In addition to the helicopters for which he is most famous, Sikorsky built and flew fixed-wing aircraft in Russia and developed flying boats in America. Igor III describes his presentation, which includes a slideshow of about 80 images, as “a kaleidoscope of his achievements.” He also plans to share personal anecdotes about his grandfather, who died when Igor III was 11 years old. He remembers Sikorsky as a very humble, down-to-earth man with courtly OldSee FLIGHT page 2...

book took place some forty years ago and she has been encouraged to write her story by many well wishers for some time now. Two years ago Paulette travelled to Argentina to visit with friends and met a local editor/ publisher who heard of her story and wanted to interview Paulette on film because the story sounded so compelling. The editor was thinking of making a documentary of this woman’s life showing that you can survive major tribulation and still come out of the process unscathed. The book shows that by prayer and perseverance, justice can prevail. After the interview with the Argentine editor, Karchenes

was asked to put her story in writing and that the editor, Carolina Neal would work with her during the process to accomplish this lifelong dream. Paulette said that, “Caroline was instrumental in getting me started with the process.” After working with the editor for almost a year, she was successful in finding a publisher to publish her book. ‘The Endless Pursuit’ is a story of a kidnapping that occurred during a divorce process and the book takes the reader through many twists and turns as a distraught mother tries to find her missing child. It is a compelling story that leads an overwrought mother through an adventure of perverse behav-

iors and enormous deception and keeps the reader spellbound. Everyone who has read the book to date claims the book is a ‘very good read.’ This mystery can be purchased through www.dorrance-

bookstore.com and also on Amazon.com. Karchenes says, “She is glad that her highly kept secret of forty years has finally been told.” Paulette writes under the pen name of Paulina Paulson. The author, now retired, continues to write and is currently scripting a book about her experiences as a bed and breakfast innkeeper, where she and her husband successfully welcomed guests from around the world, year round in their lovely Maine home for over eight years. Karchenes continues to enjoy family and friends during her retirement and can always be found writing her compassionate words and interesting stories in her Cape Neddick home.

Feedback Sought On School Communication in York

YORK According to York Superintendent Lou Goscinski, one of his key goals is to increase communication with parents, guardians, and the general York community. To achieve the goal, Goscinski is asking members of the York community to complete a survey on school communication. This past October Goscinski created a short-term, bottom-up community Listening Project to identify and prioritize

the communication of educational information to and from the York Superintendent’s Office. “The Listening Project is designed for me to learn what information is important to parents, guardians, school personnel, and the general community. It is also designed to identify how these folks would like to communicate with the York School Department, he said. Volunteers consisting of parents and community mem-

bers were recruited by Goscinski to help him with the project. For the past three months we have developed and piloted this as a communications survey. The survey is now ready for widespread distribution. Beginning on February 8, the survey will be available online at www.surveymonkey.com/r/ XS973NB. Goscinski is in the process working to make hard copies of the survey available at the following locations: York Public Library, York Town Hall, York Senior Center, York Community Service Association, and York Superintendent’s Office. The survey takes, an average, three minutes to complete. The survey will be available to the public until March 4. The results of the survey will be analyzed to improve communication with the public. “Enhancing interactive communication between the

dous pride in and support for the York Schools. I believe that this project will reinforce both, Goscinski said. Goscinski thanks the community for its on-going support of the York Schools.

...FLIGHT from page 1 World manners. Sikorsky was born in 1889 in what is now Ukraine. Inspired by the works of novelist Jules Verne, he became interested in science and engineering in his youth. He went on to develop long-range bombers for Tsarist Russia during World War I but had to flee his homeland during the outbreak of the Bolshevik revolution in 1917. Today his company is a division of Lockheed Martin, but “very much a standalone business, says his grandson, who does not work for the company. Igor III, who is also a pilot, operates a sporting campground called Bradford Camps in upper Maine with his wife Karen. He spends his non-season months in Kittery, where he has lived since 1985.

~ News ~ Arundel Conservation Trust Linking to Eastern Trail ARUNDEL The Arundel Conservation Trust (ACT) and the Eastern Trail Management District (ETMD) recently signed an agreement that will connect the Eastern Tail (ET) to the planned trails on Arundel Conservation Trust’s Limerick Road property. The connection is possible by the generous donation by Phil Labbe of an Easement through his land that lies between the ET and the ACT land. “We’re thrilled that Arundel Conservation Trust plans to connect to the Eastern Trail from its property in Arundel. The goal of the Eastern Trail is to provide a safe, scenic off-road trail for transportation and recreation for users of all ages and abilities. The more connections we have to the trail, the more attainable this goal becomes, said Carole Brush, Executive Director of the ETMD. Arundel Conservation Trust Board Members Leia Lowrey and Dot Gregoire worked closely, over several months, with both Carole Brush from the Eastern Trail and Roger Barham, Senior Gas Engineer from Unitil Corpo-

~ News ~ Veteran Honorable Service Coin Design Announced AUGUSTA The Maine Bureau of Veterans’ Services (MBVS) is pleased to announce the final design selection for the new State of Maine Honorable Service Coin and Plaque, which will honor all Maine Veterans, past and present, regardless of their branch or era of service. The winning design was submitted by Georgette L. Kanach of Gray, Maine, whose design was chosen by popular vote of more than 1,200 Maine Veterans. U.S. military members have a longstanding tradition of carrying special “challenge coins” to symbolize branch and unit identity and foster esprit de corps. In 2002, the Maine Bureau of Veterans’ Services commissioned the first of four bronze plaques that now hang in the Hall of Flags at the Maine State Capitol, each representing Veterans who served in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, as well as women Veterans. Likenesses of each of the four plaques were made into coins that are regularly presented to Maine Veterans

based on their era of service. As many other Maine Veterans have served during peacetime and in conflicts other than World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, the Honorable Service Coin was commissioned to honor those Veterans who would otherwise not be eligible to receive one of the four previously existing coins. A matching plaque will also be hung in the Hall of Flags at the State House in Augusta. “The creativity, artistic talent, patriotism and compassion for our Veterans was evident in all of the submitted designs, but ultimately, only one could be chosen,” said David Richmond, Acting Director of the Maine Bureau of Veterans’ Services.

“On behalf of the Artist Selection Committee and the state of Maine, I extend my congratulations to Ms. Georgette Kanach and thank all of the artists for lending their time and talent to honoring our Veterans.” A formal unveiling ceremony for the Honorable Service Coin and Plaque will be announced. The artist, Georgette Kanach, of Gray, Maine, is a proud Mainer and mother of two veteran daughters; grandmother to two veteran grandchildren; sister to four veteran brothers; and aunt to many nieces and nephews who have served and who are serving in the military. Kanach says her greatest honor would be to one day present each of her daughters with an Honorable Service Coin. The Maine Bureau of Veterans’ Services was established in 1947 by the State of Maine and is part of the Maine Department of Defense, Veterans and Emergency Management. Their mission is to help Mainers who served, and their loved ones, understand and navigate the

benefits, services, and programs available to them. The Bureau does this by being a responsive, experienced, and dedicated advocate. The Bureau is headquartered at Camp Keyes and has seven field service offices located throughout the state and a

claims office located at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Togus, Maine. The Bureau also operates the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery System which includes four veterans’ cemeteries. For more information, visit www.maine.gov/veterans.

Bernier-Gelinas FUNERAL HOME

Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked quesWLRQV LV ³:K\ VHQG ÀRZHUV WR D PHPRULDO service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money? Well nothing could be further from the truth. missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

Bow Seat created the Ocean Awareness Contest in 2012 to teach teenagers about issues facing our local waterways and global ocean, and to empower them to speak up for these places and create positive change for our planet. Each year the Contest invites students to explore how human actions impact ocean health – with a focus on our roles as both problem-makers and problem-solvers – through the creative arts. Since its launch, the Contest has engaged nearly 10,000 teens from 78 countries and all 50 U.S. states, and Bow Seat has awarded nearly $290,000 in scholarships to help advance their creative talents, passion for the environment, and advocacy skills. “Our participants’ works of art inspired and moved us with their passion and compassion,” said Bow Seat Executive Director Alyssa Irizarry. “Their diverse pieces illustrate that young people understand the challenge before them, and while they are

Old York Presents the Life and Times of William Pepperrel YORK Old York’s popular lecture series, History... with a side of soup! continues with a talk

that even after decades of learning and painting says “My love of art has never diminished over the years and I still venture to try new things. Above all else, I will always remain steadfast to my love for Impressionism. Look for me; I will be painting outdoors, palette knife in hand and brilliant colors at the ready. I will be swept up in the momentary drama of light and shadow, determined to capture in my work, a beautiful fleeting moment in time as a lasting impression forever.”

Kittery Art Association is located at 8 Coleman Avenue, Kittery Point. The gallery features the work of Seacoast artists in monthly shows, and sponsors a popular Music Series by local performers. We welcome new members and art appreciators of all ages. We sponsor poetry readings, figure study sessions, and plein air outings plus special interest groups. Come join us! For details, go to www.kitteryartassociation.org, or contact KAA at information@kitteryartassociation.org or 207-451-9384.

...BOND from page 12 is an important investment in home repair, weatherization, modification and new home construction for older and working Mainers. Aging in place continues to be a key issue for Maine’s 63 age-friendly communities, and we thank the Governor for releasing these funds which will make communities across our state more livable for people of all ages. The financial order Governor Mills signed Tuesday will allow $500,000 of the bond to be immediately used to fund ongoing projects. Governor Mills also signed a letter to Maine Treasurer Henry Beck declaring her intent to authorize the sale of the remainder of the bond for any ready projects come June. The housing bond, approved by almost 70 percent of Maine voters in a statewide referendum, will fund construction of more than 200 new affordable housing units for low-income seniors and the weatherization of another 100 existing homes for low-income seniors. The bond will also trigger more than $22.5 million in matching federal funds. According to the Maine Affordable Housing Coalition, more than 9,000 seniors are currently waiting for safe, affordable housing.

STATEWIDE The American Red Cross is providing steps you can take to stay safe with the cold, snow and ice. Whether you’re trying to keep your home warm or need to be out and about in the cold, these tips can help you get through the storm. Heat Your Home Safely It’s that time of year when many people resort to space heaters and other sources to keep their homes warm. Home heating is the second leading cause of fires in this country. To reduce the risk of heating related fires, the Red Cross recommends these steps: All heaters need space.

Keep children, pets and things that can burn (paper, matches, bedding, furniture, clothing, carpets, and rugs) at least three feet away from heating equipment. If you must use a space heater, place it on a level, hard and nonflammable surface (such as ceramic tile floor), not on rugs, carpets or near bedding or drapes. Plug power cords directly into outlets – never into an extension cord. Never leave a fire in the fireplace unattended, and use a glass or metal fire screen to keep fire and embers in the fireplace. Never use a cooking range or oven to heat your home. Turn off portable space

Health & Fitness Reduce Exposure to Harmful VOCs Volatile organic compounds are emitted by a vast array of products. The Environmental Protection Agency warns that VOCs consist of gases discharged from solids or liquids that produce short- and long-term health effects. VOCs are particularly troubling because their concentrations are consistently up to 10 times higher indoors than outdoors. Those who spend time inside of homes and businesses may be at risk from concentrated exposure to VOCs. Notable items that produce VOCs include treated woods, carpeting, building materials, paints, waxes, fabrics, and varnishes. Since people are constantly breathing in air, and whatever is circulating within it, it’s important for individuals to be conscious of these common offenders. VOCs can be dangerous because they may cause everything from minor symptoms of headaches, nausea and stuffy noses to more serious conditions like nervous system problems and kidney and liver damage. Some VOCs are known to

cause cancer in humans, warns the EPA. To reduce exposure to VOCs, homeowners are advised to take the following steps: Read product labels carefully for warnings against VOCs. Whenever possible, select products that do not emit VOCs. Invest in alternative products, such as all-natural cleaning solutions. Many people find that common and safe items like vinegar, citrus oils and baking soda are as effective as chemical clean-

ers without the same harmful side effects. Use an air purifier in conjunction with HVAC systems. Purchase an air purifier that specifically filters out odors and VOCs, which can help people with chemical sensitivities. Rely on natural ventilation when using products that have strong odors or are suspected of emitting VOCs. This can be as easy as opening windows and doors or doing work outside. Use a shed rather than an attached garage to store gas cans, pesticides, paint thinners, and other odoriferous materials away

The Outlook Tavern

Dining Guide 5-Star Review! from Yelp

MY HUSBAND AND I HAVE OFTEN VISITED for their fabulous brunch

(if you like homemade corn beef hash you will have to try theirs). Now that the tourists have left, we found having dinner in front of the fireplace a wonderful and charming experience. Prices are very reasonable, portions are huge, and the menu is variable. They always have duck and the sauce changes daily, but my husband discovered that on Saturdays they have prime rib until they run out. I suggest you get there early! The cut of meat was huge [and] it was cooked to perfection. Great place, will always go back!

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, I really like your article each week. When I started with the computer 25 years ago they were teaching Word Perfect and were sure that would be the going thing. Now I have a lot of documents saved in WP and can’t open them in WORD. Do you have any ideas? Millie Dear Millie, Word can actually open quite a few word processing file types, you just need to follow a slightly different path to open the files. Instead of just double clicking on the Word Perfect files and expecting your computer to open it in Word, try following these steps: 1. Open Microsoft Word first, and use Word to...2. Click File. 3. Click Open. 4. Under “Open” click, “Browse”. 5. In the Files of Type: dropdown box change to All Files (*.*) 6. Browse to the WP file you want to open. 7. Click it and select OK. 8. Word will perform the conversion. 9. Once the file has been opened, save it in Word format so

that you will be able to easily open it in the future. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, My new Sony laptop does not have a cd slot, yet the only version of Microsoft office that I own is in a CD form. Is it legit to transfer the contents to a usb?? Is there a way around this? Bianca Dear Bianca, Yes, you can copy the contents of the Office disk to USB in order to install it on your computer. You might even find directions inside the package for downloading your version of Office from Microsoft. Most versions of Office these days are not even provided on a disk, instead, the user must have or create an account with Microsoft, download the installation files from their website and get a product key after filling out an online form. I hope you enjoy your new version of Office. If it includes OneNote, check it out. OneNote is my favorite part of Office! Elizabeth Dear Reader, This week, I needed to figure

out how to do something online that I figured I should share with all of you. The other evening, I was blissfully sewing at my machine, when my phone began to buzz with text messages from my children. They wanted to know if I was sending them friend requests from my facebook account, which I had not. After a little bit of investigating, we figured out that someone had created an account with my name, and they had even stolen my pictures so that the two accounts looked identical. They had not hacked into my account, so changing my password (which I did anyway) did not help. Facebook has a way to report any accounts that are offensive or inappropriate, but I had never done that before, so I went looking for directions. Here is how to report a page if this ever happens to you: 1. Go to the offensive page. I found the fake page by searching for my name, but my children already had links to the page from the friend requests that had been sent to them, so I could have gotten it

from them. 2. In the lower-right corner of the cover photo, there is a button that says, “Message” and then has three dots. Click on the three dots. A drop down menu will appear with two options, “Give Feedback or report this profile, and Block”. Click on “Give Feedback or Report this profile”. 3. A dialog box will appear with several choices, select the choice you want, in my case, I selected, “Pretending to Be Someone”. 4. Next, you will have more options. It must be common for people to pretend to be someone else, because one of the options is that the timeline is pretending to be me. 5. Just finish answering the questions that facebook has for you, then click to submit your report. In my case, Facebook responded and closed the offending account in less than an hour, and I went back to my sewing. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Way back in the day when I had XP and Outlook Express I saved some of my eml files because

I wanted to make sure I would keep them. On my current computer, I use gmail and of course, Outlook Express is no longer available. Now I have file folders of saved eml files that I cannot view. Is there any way to access the files, is there a program that will let me see them? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Gigi Dear Gigi, All you have to do to read the .eml files is install an email program that can read them. I know that Microsoft Office Outlook can read them. In addition, the free, Mozilla Thunderbird will open and read messages in the eml format. You would have to purchase Outlook as part of Microsoft Office, or you can download Thunderbird from www.mozilla. org. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Elizabeth has answered thousands of computer questions over the years. Browse www.askthecomputerlady.com for more information.

WELLS There’s nothing wrong with being shy. But when you’re a shy kitty who’s looking for a loving home, it can really slow you down. Many people assume it means you don’t like them. In reality, it’s just fear and uncertainty. Shy kitties often bring out the best in people and encourage them to become more sensitive to the emotional needs of another. Having a shy kitty finally relax and purr, and even seek out affection, is a reward that’s worth the wait. Maddie and Stella are sweet, shy kitties about nine

years old. They arrived at Safe Haven after their loving family member had to go into assisted living without them. This kind of separation can cause great stress for felines, who typically do not like change. They were so fearful we had to remove them from their communal cat room. Even in our office, they often scramble and hide whenever the door opens, only peeking out to see if things are safe so they can come out.

Wait until March to donate larger items/ quantities. Spring items are welcome as well as Easter dĂŠcor. Each purchase helps pay a vet bill for a kitty in great need. FMI: 207-229-8314.

Luckily, Maddie and Stella have each other to cling to, and as they get more comfortable with the sights, sounds and smells of our Adoption Center, they will shed their fear. All they really need is a quiet home together where they can be the only pets, and someone to love and cherish them. Please call Safe Haven at 207-646-1611 about Maddie and Stella. As senior kitties, there’s no adoption fee. We just want them settled -- together -- in a loving home. Thanks! Our adoption center is open 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. Tues - Sat. Come visit, meet our kitties, and consider becoming part of our caring team of cat loving volunteers. Morning, afternoon and evening shifts have openings for any task, from feeding and scooping to laundry. We’d love to have you, and you’ll love the kitties and their sunny rooms!
