Taverns on Piscataqua’s Forgotten Frontier SOUTH BERWICK Reliable drinking sources and promoters of sociability, beer and ale played an important role in early New England. Archaeologists know this through the many artifacts related to ale and tavern culture excavated at the Chadbourne Site and other sites in the Piscataqua region. On Thursday, February 22 at 7:30 p.m., the Old Berwick Historical Society presents Dr. Emerson “Tad” Baker, who will discuss these archeological finds and their significance. “We are lucky to have Tad
speaking this year. He is always a guest favorite,” said Nicole St. Pierre, vice-president of the society. “At the lecture, Tad will also describe his efforts with Portsmouth’s Earth Eagle Brewings, to recreate colonial ales from historical recipes. He enjoys beer making as a hobby.” Baker is the project scholar for the Forgotten Frontier: Untold Stories of the Piscataqua exhibit currently on display at the Counting House Museum in South Berwick. The museum will be open for winter hours on Saturday, Feb-

Now You Can Emote with Lobsters STATEWIDE Do you ever search for the perfect emoji to cap off a message to a friend, especially one who is “from away”? Well, this summer you will have the state’s iconic image at your fingertips. The latest update of Unicode Emoji characters were announced last week, and the list introduces 157 new emojis, including the lobster, for which U.S. Senator Angus King aggressively lobbied. ELIOT The Piscataqua Rangers Junior Fife and Drum Corps played for the Eliot Elementary School students during morning meeting on Friday, Feb. 9. Commander Tom explained to the students how the fife and drums were used in battle and on long marches by early American soldiers. They marched around
the gym and played the Star Spangled Banner. The group is free and open to the public with new members beginning at age ten. They make exceptions for younger participants if they show interest and dedication. They practice at EES every Tuesday evening. For more information, check visit http://nhfifeanddrum.com/.
In September 2017, Senator King wrote to the Unicode Consortium asking it to include the lobster emoji in its standard character set, citing its significant impact on Maine’s culture and economy, according to a press release. Senator King referred to the proposal drafted by a native Mainer in his lobbying efforts. Lobsters have improved
their reputation over the years. They used to be served to convicts, but there was a legal limit on how many could be foisted on them within a week. Now, of course, we line up to pay big per pound prices and consider the lobster a delicacy. The new emoji is a fitting tribute to the state’s

Veteran Thrilled About First Trip to Star Island
KITTERY The nonprofit Star Island Corporation announced that US Army Veteran Nelson Linscott will experience his first trip to Star Island after being randomly selected to enjoy an all-inclusive vacation on Star Island for a week this summer. Linscott, a Kittery resident, grew up in Kittery and has lived on the Seacoast for many years, but never had the opportunity to visit the Isles of Shoals. Linscott says
“As an avid photographer, this trip is a dream come true and a wonderful surprise. The Veteran’s Raffle is a great program to honor the men and women who have served their country in the military. Since I live on a very limited budget being disabled, I never thought I would be able to spend an afternoon, never mind seven days and nights on the island. Linscott began his service in the U.S. Army in 1973 and

was stationed overseas most of his enlistment. Linscott was involved in the evacuation of Vietnam in April 1975 as a classified courier in the 11th Aviation Battalion. Linscott was a Specialist 4th Class and was honorably discharged in 1976, Seacoast residents know Linscott as a peace activist, poet, and photographer. His dog, Baxter, is usually by his side. “We want to recognize and support those who have sacrificed to serve our country, said Star Island CEO Joe Watts. “Our raffle is one way we celebrate our veterans by offering a wonderful respite on our unique island off the coast of New Hampshire and Maine. More than a 185 veterans See STAR page 5...

...LOBSTER from page 1 unofficial mascot. An immediate concern to Maine natives is the emoji doesn’t really resemble what we see at our summertime outings. The emoji has what seems to be two crusher claws, a swollen tail, and is missing a set of legs. (Lobsters have ten, not eight.) And the new emoji is red, or cooked. Some Mainers would have preferred its color when alive. But no matter, emojis are so small most recipients of the crustacean won’t notice or mind. The Unicode Consortium is a non-profit, non-governmental organization that manages the standard set of characters (e.g., letters, numbers, symbols,
emoji) that are used by most major websites, applications, and operating systems. The Consortium annually updates the Unicode Standard, and invites public proposals for new additions. The new emoji will be available for use on social media platforms and smartphones in June.

Playhouse Announces 2018 Lineup
OGUNQUIT The Ogunquit Playhouse announced five spectacular musicals for its upcoming season that includes an all-new production of Smokey Joe’s Café, the U.S. premiere of the new musical Grumpy Old Men, a beautiful new production of the classic Oklahoma!, and the first regional production of the sumptuous new musical An American in Paris. Closing out the season is a surprise smash musical sensation that will run for an unprecedented 8 weeks, from September 5 through October 28, which will be announced in March. “We are elated to be heading into our 86th season with an extraordinary lineup of shows, and are very fortunate to be collaborating with show’s original producing team on an all-new production of Smokey Joes Café, which will transfer to New York following its run at the Ogunquit Playhouse,” said Bradford Kenney, Ogunquit Playhouse executive artistic director. “We have also been following the development of the brand new musical version of Grumpy Old Men and are delighted and honored to produce the U.S premiere of this hilarious new production for Playhouse audiences this season. Oklahoma! has had a long history at the Playhouse and we are thrilled to create a new production to celebrate its
75th anniversary. We are also excited to create a fresh new look for our regional premiere of the beautiful musical An American in Paris.” The season kicks off with an all-new production of Smokey Joe’s Café, on stage May 16 to June 9. The Ogunquit Playhouse is thrilled to be collaborating with the show’s original producing team on an all-new incarnation of the record breaking Broadway hit Smokey Joe’s Café, which heads to New York City following its Ogunquit run. The Grammy Award-winning and Tony Award-nominated smash made history as Broadway’s longest running musical revue and celebrates the best songs of the legendary songwriting duo, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. Next up is the beloved classic Oklahoma! on stage June 13 to July 7, celebrating its 75th Anniversary since opening on Broadway. This groundbreaking musical was Rodgers and Hammerstein’s first collaboration, and in many ways was their most innovative, having set standards for musical theatre that are still being followed today. One of the most captivating musicals ever to be adapted for the stage, An American in Paris - A New Musical is inspired by the Academy Award-winning film and featuring the music of
George and Ira Gershwin hits the stage July 11 to August 4. The Ogunquit Playhouse is proud to be the first regional theatre to produce this new musical, which won four Tony Awards in 2015. Hoping to start a new life, World War II veteran Jerry Mulligan chooses newly-liberated Paris as the place to make a name for himself as a painter. But Jerry’s life becomes complicated when he meets Lise, a young Parisian shop girl with her own secret and realizes he is not her only suitor. This lavish new musical is guaranteed to sweep you off your feet — and into the arms of a story you’ll never forget. The stunning combination of classic music, timeless story, breathtaking dance and a beautiful, allnew design created exclusively for the Ogunquit Playhouse results in a spectacular musical that includes the Gershwin songs “I Got Rhythm,” “Liza,” “‘S Wonderful,” and “But Not for Me.” And then the U.S. premiere of the new musical-comedy, Grumpy Old Men: The Musical — on stage August 8 to September 1 and just in time to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the classic 1993 Warner Brothers film starring Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau and Ann-Margret. This hilarious new show was penned by Dan Remmes, with music by Neil Berg and lyrics by Nick Meglin. Two aging neighbors, Max and John, have been feuding for more than fifty years See PLAYS page 9...

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, I have read your wonderful newsletter for many years and because of your previous recommendation, which I know you now have changed, I opted to use AVG for the past 10 years. I am presently using a 6 month old Lenovo ideapad 110 lap top computer, which is my life-line and very important to me as I live in Panama using WiFi. I presently have a basic 2 year contract with AVG. For the first time they have offered me a free AVG Driver Updater. I read their very long contract and wonder if this is something I should accept. Please advise me. Gratefully, Maureen Dear Maureen, No, you don’t need the driver updater. For one thing, the free version only “checks” to see if you need updates to your drivers. Once it has checked, it will try to sell you the paid version of driver updater before it will update any drivers. The problem with this is that unless you are having issues with a particular piece of hard-
ware, lets say your printer for example, you don’t need to update drivers. And, if you are having problems with your hardware, you can go to the website of the device and freely download and install the drivers there. No expensive driver updater software needed. In the 20 years that I have been fixing computers, I have only seen a handful that were having problems because of outdated drivers. This is actually the reason that I stopped selling AVG. They keep trying to sell my customers additional products that they don’t really need. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have been a long time subscriber to your emails. I never contacted you before. Now I have need to create another email address and transfer 800 + emails from my yahoo address, is there a simple way to do that? I was going to get another gmail account. Thank you for all you do! Once you have created a gmail account, click on the “Settings” icon in the upper-right of your screen. It looks like a gear. A drop down menu will appear, click on “Settings” in that menu. Across the top of your settings page, you will see tabs labeled with blue text. Click on the tab that says, “Accounts and Import.” On the Accounts and Import page, the second section from the top should say, “Import mail and contacts.” Click on the blue link in the middle column. As you can see, Gmail will automatically import from Yahoo, Hotmail, AOL or other online accounts. A new window will open that will walk you through the steps of importing from your old account to the new Gmail account. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have a question regarding Family tree maker. I know that it is no longer supported by I believe Ancestry. I have ALL my family tree information in this program and need to add more but I am afraid I might lose it all. I do use Carbonite as backup. Any suggestion of a better easy program to use and what is the best way to get it from family tree maker to the new program? Thanks for all your help. Sincerely, Juanita in Iowa Dear Juanita, Nearly all family tree programs support a file type called, GEDCOM to import and export files between the programs. A GEDCOM file is a file format that was created specifically to allow different family tree software programs to share information with each other. You can create a backup GEDCOM file with the following steps: 1. Click “File” in the menu bar of Family Tree Maker. 2. Click “Export” in the drop down menu. 3. A new, “Export” window will open 4. Click to select “Entire File” so that you

When I put in the DVD, Windows 10 said there was no program installed to play the DVD, and then wanted me to buy a movie player for fifteen dollars. I thought a movie player came with Windows, do I really have to buy one from Microsoft? Thanks, JG Dear JG, It appears that Windows 10 does not come with a DVD player, but you can get a good, open source (free) media player and install it on your Windows 10 computer. I have used VLC Media Player from www.videolan.org and it works quite well. You can download it from their website and once installed you can use it to play your DVDs. Health & Fitness $10,000 Donation Big Boost KENNEBUNK Habitat for Humanity of York County has received a grant of $10,000 from the Sam L. Cohen Foundation for their county-wide weatherization program, Keep York County Warm! The Sam L. Cohen Foundation is a private, philanthropic foundation supporting non-profit organizations in southern Maine. Low-income families spend a larger portion of their income on utilities which means they must stretch their budget to make ends meet or go without other necessities. The
weatherization services provided by Keep York County Warm! have a direct impact on incomeeligible families and seniors by reducing their heating and cooling costs, and improving health and safety issues. The addition of energy-efficiency measures also helps preserve the home. “The generous support of the Sam L. Cohen Foundation ensures that KYCW! is able to provide weatherizaton services at no cost to the families we serve,” said Amy D. Nucci, Habitat for Humanity of York County’s Executive Director. “Since 2015, the Cohen Foundation has provided
$30,000 to assist Habitat in developing and stabilizing the weatherization program to serve more than 130 families.” New partnerships with Ef-

Diabetes Program Re-Authorized MAINE The recent government funding bill will include a full two-year reauthorization of the Special Diabetes Program, which includes funding for Type 1 Diabetes research and the Diabetes Program for Indians. This extension will provide a total of $600 million dollars combined for the two programs over a two-year period; each program will receive $150 million in FY 2018 and $150 million in FY 2019 for a total of $300 million for each program over the twoyear period. This extension supports the livelihood, health, and well-being of the more than 30 million Americans diagnosed with diabetes and the additional 84 million diagnosed with prediabetes. “Since we started the Senate Diabetes Caucus in 1997, funding for diabetes research has more than tripled
from $319 million in 1997 to more than a billion dollars this past year. As a result, we have seen encouraging developments in the management, treatment, and potential cures for Type 1 diabetes,” said Senator Susan Collins. “These groundbreaking, life-changing discoveries were made possible by the essential Special Diabetes Program. We have also seen significant reductions in diabetic eye disease, kidney failure, and other complications related to Type 2 diabetes in American Indian populations due to the Special Diabetes Program for Indians. Our continued investment will help to continue vital large-scale trials, advance next steps in research, and reach Native populations to change the course of disease.” This past week, Senator Collins met with the leaders

Doctor Shortages, Training Addressed in New Bill MAINE Following a bipartisan effort led by Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Jon Tester (D-MT), the government funding bill will extend and provide $126.5 million for each of fiscal years 2018 and 2019 for the successful Teaching Health Centers Graduate Medical Ed-
ucation Program, which trains physicians in underserved, community-based settings. “Over the next decade, the severe shortage of primary care doctors could reach crisis levels in a growing number of rural and underserved communities in Maine and across our country. Alarmingly, these communities

are often those hardest hit by the opioid epidemic, said Senator Collins. “The extension of this critical program will help prepare the next generation of physicians and ensure that all Americans have access to the health care they need. “Our rural communities are hit hard by doctor shortages, said Senator Tester. “No one should be forced to travel hundreds of miles to get a check-up. By getting more doctors training
in our community health centers, we can ensure folks in rural Montana have access to care. “In the midst of a primary care crisis, the Teaching Health Center Graduate Medical Education program has demonstrated that addressing the shortage of primary care physicians, especially for traditionally underserved rural and urban areas, is not only essential but also achievable, said Neil S. Calman, MD, President of the American Association of Teaching Health Centers. By 2025, the United States is estimated to need more than
100,000 new physicians to meet the growing demand for health care services across the country. For the past six years, the Teaching Health Centers Graduate Medical Education Program has worked to fill this gap. The program trains medical residents in community-based settings, including low-income, underserved rural and urban neighborhoods. Medical education residents who train at teaching health centers are significantly more likely to remain in rural or underserved communities.
Exploring Dental Crowns Many people visit their dentists and learn they have a tooth that requires a crown. In many instances, dental crowns are necessary for proper tooth care. Crowns were once widely referred to as “caps. A crown is a permanent cover for a tooth that would otherwise require a very large filling after dental decay has been removed. Crowns also may be used to repair cracked or broken teeth
so that extraction is not necessary. Sometimes crowns are used for cosmetic modifications or to hold a dental bridge in place. The crown itself can be made from different materials, like stainless steel, gold or metallic alloy, porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, and resin. A dentist will determine which material will work best depending on the application and tooth location. Understanding your appointment Crowns are typically installed in two appointments. The first appointment requires prep work so the tooth can hold the crown. This is typically a painless procedure, and one in which the dentist will anesthetize the tooth and gum tissue and then file down the tooth along the chewing surface and
sides to make room for the crown covering. If the tooth was decayed or insubstantial, the dentist may have to “build up the tooth instead of filing it down. Again, these determinations are made by the dentist who has the expertise to gauge how much workable tooth is left. Once the tooth has been prepared, an impression will be made of the bite area. That’s because the permanent crown will be fabricated in a laboratory and the fit/color will need to be exact for comfort — and also to ensure that bacteria and food debris do not get caught between the crown and tooth. The final component is a temporary cap that will keep the prepared tooth clean. This is molded in the office and will See CROWNS page 13...

a home ready to sell and be positioned to purchase a property. The presentation started with a working name of “So It’s Time to Sell the House” and the name stuck. Bousquet moved to the York area from the Green Mountain State after many successful years in real estate in northern Vermont. He began his early career as a multi-media producer, but his entrepreneurial spirit led him to real estate. He established a successful real estate firm in the resort area of Stowe, but his wife’s love of the seacoast and being a Maine native brought him to York to put down roots. As he continued his 30 plus year real estate career here, it became clear that there was a need for helping homeowners navigate today’s fast paced real estate market. The program had its start as a lunch and learn program at the York Senior Center and has now bloomed into the program being offered through the Adult Education Programs at Traip
Academy, Marshwood High School and York. “When Steve first approached me over a year ago with the home seller seminar, I was very intrigued and knew then it was something that our members should see,” said Janis Marshall Colby, program coordinator at the York Senior Center. “We developed a lunch and learn format for him to present this important information. And we’re very pleased to have him back this year to continue giving this impressive seminar.” What started as a short presentation on helping long time homeowners get organized, became a seminar that helps the homeowner understand the steps, beginning with cleaning up and cleaning out through the conclusion of the sale. Both seminars will be offered this spring. Beginning with “So It’s Time to Sell the House” on February 28 at Marshwood High School in South Berwick and concluding with “So It’s
Time to Buy A Home” on May 24 at the York Senior Center. For specific times and dates of both seminars and additional information, contact the York Senior
Center or Kittery Adult Education (207-439-5896), Marshwood Adult Education (207-384-5703) and York Adult Education (207-363-7922).

Âź tsp salt 1 tsp pure vanilla extract 6 mounded cups of fresh picked blueberries 1 Tbl butter-cut up in small pieces
DIRECTIONS: 1}Mix Ă&#x;our and salt for pie crust. Cut in shortening and butter into the Ă&#x;our and mix until it looks like a coarse crumbly meal. Stir in water with a fork to moisten. Divide the dough in half and shape into a ball. Flatter slightly and roll each ball on a Ă&#x;oured surface to a 12-inch circle. Place one of the piecrust into a 9-inch-deep dish pie plate, press onto the bottom and sides. The second piece will be the top, so make your Ăžlling and place on top and seal in the edges, make vents on top of pie and trim extra crust. 2}If you have never used a box of premade piecrust, give it a try. It will taste just as good and save you time and cleanup. 3} Mix sugar, Ă&#x;ower, nutmeg, cinnamon and salt in a large bowl. Sir in the vanilla and blueberries and mix well. Spoon mixture into the prepared pie plate with
GORGES GRANT HOTEL 449 Main Street Ogunquit crust added. If you have extra berries place them in the middle of the pie and dot with butter. As the pie cooks the extra berries will settle down but keep the pie nice and thick. Top with the second crust, seal and trim edges. Cut several slits on top to vent. Brush a bit of milk on the top crust and sprinkle a tablespoon or two of granulated sugar for an extra sweet crust. Place on a cookie sheet and bake at 400 degrees in your preheated oven for 55 to 60 minutes or until the crust is brown and the juices are bubbling from the vents. Remove from oven and cool for about 30-minutes so the juices thicken. Serve warm and enjoy!

Bishop Deeley Blesses New Ascension Chapel in York
NAPLES, FL – Elizabeth (Betty) Bolster, of Naples, FL, passed away Thursday, February 7, 2018. Betty was 88 years young and a long-time resident of Naples. Born in Boston, MA, in 1929, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Stanton L. Burgess of West Newton, MA, she was presented to society after graduating from Brimmer and May School in Boston. She graduated from Penn Hall Junior College in Chambersburg, PA. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Phillips E. Bolster of 31 years, and an infant son, Kenneth. She is survived by five sons, one daughter, thirteen grandchildren, three greatgrandchildren, and one brother in Charlotte, NC. Betty was a former member of Sweet Adelines, loved music and played in the Bonita Village Band. She was
a faithful volunteer of over 30 years at North Naples Hospital, where she amassed over 7000 hours of dedicated service in the ER. She was caring, generous and indispensable to the hospital staff. She was a long time “Booster and supporter of athletes in Duxbury, MA. Surrounded by family at her passing, Betty will be missed by thousands privileged to have been touched by her generosity. As per her wish, her ashes will be sprinkled in the waters off her beloved beaches in the Gulf of Mexico.

Deeley blessed water to purify the walls of a new chapel in York. “May all here today and all those in days to come, who will celebrate your mysteries in this chapel, be united in the holy city of your peace, prayed Bishop Deeley before sprinkling parishioners and their new worship space with holy water. The Mass in January, was the culmination of months and months of dedication put forth by the clergy and parishioners of the Parish of the Ascension of the Lord, who had hoped for a chapel to help lessen heating costs at the much larger St. Christopher Church on Barrell Lane. The new Ascension Chapel stands in the shadow of St. Christopher, directly across York Street, and will be used for daily Mass and adoration during the winter months. The structure is not new, having been built in 1972. Since, then it has housed several different banks, most re-

ty continued after the purchase of the building was finalized. The Knights of Columbus assisted with many projects associated with the renovation. In September, a massive service project (also pictured below) conducted by the parish’s youth ministry drew middle school students, high school students, and their parents to trim the bushes surrounding the building, rehabilitate old flower beds, and clear a large amount of brush. Their efforts, combined with the interior work, led to the completion of the new chapel and the long-awaited moment of the bishop blessing it. “May all who gather here in faith to listen to your word and celebrate your sacraments, experience the presence of Christ, who promised to be with those gathered in his name, said the bishop. Concelebrating the Mass with the bishop on Tuesday were Fr. Scott Mower, the pastor of the parish, and Fr. Amandus Sway, AJ, parochial vicar of the parish. Before the Liturgy of the Eucharist, Bishop Deeley blessed the chapel’s altar as a grateful assembly looked on.

~ Pets ~ Another Chance Animal Rescue NORTH BERWICK Meet Daisy! Not available for adoption as of yet, but one of the five kittens who, along with her mum, we have been posting pleas for help with here. We wanted to take the time to thank everyone who has been following our sick kittens that we took in and are trying to help and update you all on their progress. We are happy to say that all five are doing well, and while their recovery is difficult with the horrible upper respiratory infections they came to us with, they, along with their mother, are making very slow but steady leaps and bounds. All have gained weight, responded to the medications being given to them, and we, along with our veterinarian, are optimistic that with all of the efforts that we, they and the outpouring of community helpers who have graciously come by to help feed and care for them, that they will all in time be on much more solid ground. Thank you all who have and continue to help us help them. They will all definitely need one eye, although for one of them both eyes, removed sadly. Unfortunately, the bacterial infection they had causing the URI was just too much for these small tiny

and very vulnerable babies to be able to fight off and it directly caused catastrophic damage to their eyes that no amount of intervention has managed to save. It saddens us, but we are told that they can all live perfectly normal healthy lives without an eye (or in the one case, both eyes). They are still too young and small though to have these necessary enucleation (eye removal) surgeries done, but we hope to get that done as soon as they are a bit bigger and more stable. Our veterinarian continues to monitor their progress and advise us regularly as they get seen a few times per week. We are still in need of donations as their ongoing care and surgeries are costly. No amount is too small! Donations may be sent either to us by mail at Another Chance Animal Rescue, PO Box 552, North Berwick, ME 03906 or via our PayPal account which is boomeredgewater@gmail.com using the “Friends & Family
Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS Remember Molly? We wrote about her in the Sentinel several times, looking for a special person to bring her home and care for her at Safe Haven’s expense. Unfortunately, we received no responses. Well, grab a hankie, because I want to tell you about a miracle. Molly is a beautiful, four year-old female Siamese who was born with kidney disease. She requires a special diet, daily medication, and subcutaneous fluids a couple times a week. Because she didn’t play well with other cats, she lived in a small room by herself. It had a window with a busy bird feeder, but she was lonely. Molly remained sweet and grateful for any attention she received from our busy volunteers. But her quality of life was a concern. Her former foster parents, Sandy and David, were now taking care of another special-needs cat, Bodhi, who

needed a watchful eye with his diet to help him remain healthy. Special tests and diligent care succeeded, and one day a call came in for a kitty that matched Bodhi. Despite his special needs, the applicant met this wonderful fellow, fell in love and took him home. Here’s where our miracle comes in. Bodhi’s adoption means his devoted former foster parents have some free time and room — and they’ve asked to have Molly come back to live with them forever. In the place where Molly had been happiest. Sandy and David took Molly home, and Molly must have remembered all the joy she had with them. She began eating again, and showing signs of happiness. So she’ll stay with Sandy and David for the rest of her life.
option to avoid any fees. All donations are tax-deductible as we are a non-profit 501(c)3 organization. We are currently in need of Scoopable Litter as well.. Volunteers still needed. We have many morning spots both during the week and on weekends where we are lacking help with cleaning the various areas of the rescue that our cats & kittens reside in. The ideal volunteers will be motivated, not afraid to get their hands dirty, be able to follow state mandated cleaning protocols and either know how to clean or be willing to learn. A general knowledge or affinity for cats is a plus. Purrr-fect volunteer opportunity for the cat lover who is retired, semi-retired, a stay at home parent looking for a few hours a week, who either need some time out of the house to themselves or can spare some time while the kids are at school or at activities. The reward is the purrs and headbonks the cats and kittens you work with will shower you with in addition to the sense and feeling of pride and joy you will feel in helping to make a difference in their little lives. So if you have a day of the week where you can spare a few hours to come and be apart of our team of volunteers, please email us at volunteers@metrocast.net or just stop by anytime daily between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and introduce yourself at our Adoption Facility located at 251 Country Club Road, Sanford, so we can show you around and better show you what is needed! Ask for Marilyn. And with the devotion, love and care she’s receiving from them, we expect Molly will live a longer and certainly happier life! In other news, the furnace at Safe Haven’s adoption center stopped working on Feb 7. Replacement parts were a week away. To keep all the catrooms warm, we purchased eight radiator-style space heaters. They worked great, but we were concerned about possible accidents or short circuits possibly leading to a fire. So we’ve been camping out there 24/7. Yes, sleeping right there with the kitties in threehour shifts. We monitored the heaters (and the kitties) all through each night. All seem happy to have us there, enjoying extra playtimes and pettings and 3 a.m. groomings. Hopefully our furnace will be repaired soon. (Donations appreciated.) Safe Haven thrift shop in the Wells Corner Shopping Plaza will be open Monday Feb 19 as it’s a holiday. Open Tues through Sun from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Quality donations welcome. Please do not bring large amounts of donations because we have limited space in our store. Instead, call and we’ll meet you at our storage unit. Thanks!
Animal Welfare Society WEST KENNEBUNK Look at those eyes! And that handsome face! Let us introduce you to Smith, a sweet and gentle three year old that has traveled from afar to become a Mainer and find the perfect home in New England. Smith comes to us from Georgia. He came from a situation where he received little attention from people, so he needs a little time to get used to being approached and handled. He is very sweet and loving once he is comfortable. Smith has been working on his basic commands and already has mastered sit. He’s been working on stay, lay down, and shake, and would love to continue his training with his new people. Attending a training class, like the ones we offer at AWS, would be a great way to bond with him. He has lived with other dogs in the past, but he will need to have a dog introduction with poten-
tial new canine friends at AWS before going home. Stop by the Adoption Center on Holland Road to meet Smith or visit animalwelfaresociety.org to learn more about him.
