“People Matter at the New Madison’s Cafe

Nicole McCoomb and Sean Roy, business partners at Madison’s Cafe, opening in South Berwick in April.

By Carin Lee, Staff Reporter SOUTH BERWICK A new restaurant, Madison's Cafe, will open the beginning of April at 12 Portland Street, in South Berwick, on the town square. It's motto is “Where all people matter, and the majority of its employees will be people with Intellectual and Development Disabilities (IDD). The cafe is the brainchild of Nicole McCoomb, whose 18-year old daughter, Madison, has developmental

delays. She wanted a place for her daughter to thrive after high school graduation – a place that would teach her daily life skills and allow her the dignity of work and a paycheck. McCoomb has lived in South Berwick for 17 years and has 3 children in the school system. She saw an empty restaurant downtown, a lack of opportunities for people with IDD and put the two together. She has been a waitress and bartender for years, so the res-

taurant business was very familiar to her. She was inspired by a Facebook video of a family with two children with Down's Syndrome who had opened a coffee shop. The video captured her thoughts and McCoomb decided to open Madison's Cafe. Her goals are simply to “serve good, healthy food and to provide a learning place for people with IDD. The restaurant will serve See MADISON page 3...

ing the French and Native raid of 1703 that devastated coastal villages, during a century-long contest of faith and allegiance that defined the Piscataqua frontier. Join the Old Berwick Historical Society (OBHS) and the Great Works Regional Land Trust (GWRLT) on Saturday, February 25 from 10-11:30 a.m. for a winter walk overlooking marshlands and barrier dunes at Beach Plum Farm on Route 1 in Ogunquit. Beach Plum Farm is a 22acre site on the Ogunquit River where remnants of a New England saltwater farm can be seen, along with Moody’s Stream, marsh grasses, wildlife habitat, and beach plum bushes. This history hike is part of a five-event hike series led by historians on GWRLT conservation lands, which complement OBHS’s 2017 lecture series about cultural frontiers. Frontier' project, which brings to light long-buried clues about our regional identity. Each hike is preceded by a corresponding lecture offered 1-2 weeks prior. Paired with the Beach Plum Farm hike is a talk by Dr. Ann Little, “The Many Captivities of Esther Wheelwright: Communities in the Northeast Borderlands, on February 23, at 7:30 p.m. at the Berwick Academy Arts Center in South Berwick. Esther Wheelwright was born and raised to age seven in Wells, Maine. She was captured in 1703 by the Wabanaki and taught to live as a native girl. Enrolled in a convent school in Quebec City at age twelve, she eventually became Mother Superior of the Ursuline order in New France. Dr. Little will explore what Wheelwright’s story reveals about three cultures that defined the colonial era. Dr. Little will accompany the Beach Plum Farm hike. Following the hike, participants can warm up, enjoy refreshments, and chat with Little and Baker at GWRLT headquarters, located at the farm entrance. For details on hike sites, visit www.gwrlt.org. ~ News ~ Historical Society Offers Vacation Camp for Kids YORK Unplug from today’s busy world and learn new skills ...MADISON from page 1 breakfast and lunch six days a week from 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. On the menu for breakfast will be baked goods, breakfast sandwiches, oatmeal, fruit cups, smoothies, tea, coffee, cappuccino, and lattes. Lunch will offer sandwiches, salads, soups, smoothies, coffees, yogurt parfaits and desserts. And yes, there will be gluten-free options and take-out offered. Additionally the cafe will have WiFi. McCoomb is striving for a cheerful, comfy, like-home atmosphere. There will be a small table and 4 chairs for young children, a comfy couch, and a counter at the window looking out over the square. In the summer there will be six to eight tables on the outside patio. Sean Roy is McCoomb's business partner. According to him he is, “the builder, handy man and all-around do-it guy. He will be involved in the dayto-day running of the operation. Madison's Cafe will employ anyone of any age who struggles with IDD. It's goal is to fit the job to the individual, taking advantage of each employee's strengths and teaching to their weaknesses. There will be opportunities to do food prep, deliver food to tables, wash dishes and clean. McCoomb has enthusiasm and a vision. “I think about the restaurant 24/7 and every day I have a new idea. She does believe “It takes a village to raise a child and wants community involvement in her restaurant. High school students are invited to work there to fulfill their community service hours. She will host paint nights once a month, birthday parties and tea parties. And she'll fundraise for local sports teams, donating a portion of one day's profits to them. “The community is excited and supportive, says McCoomb. Other businesses want to help. “Our Facebook page has blown up. McCoomb describes her daughter Madison as “funny, sassy and lovable. She was named last year's Prom Queen. One of the highlights of Madison's high school years has been the time she has spent doing community service work. She volunteers at Sharon Knight's Berwick Early Learning Center, where she loves the babies and toddlers. Madison knows the cafe is named for her, and is still trying to take it all in. McCoomb believes, “These people can do so much, given the chance. Our customers will

Donations are gratefully accepted. “Wheelwright’s story is an astonishing personal account of a life transformed by three cultures that defined the colonial era, said Nina Maurer, consulting curator for OBHS. “Crossing borders and navigating social upheaval is the core of our 2017 lecture series, focused on cultural frontiers.

Esther Wheelwright (16961780) embodies the imperial conquest of North America like no other eighteenth-century figure, yet she has been largely written out of the story of American history. Dr. Little explores what Wheelwright’s journey reveals about English, Wabanaki and French cultures that vied for control of a continent. Born and raised to age seven in Wells, Wheelwright was taken in wartime by the Wabanaki in 1703 and taught to pray as a Catholic and live as a Native girl. At age twelve, she was enrolled in the Ursuline convent school as a student, where she would remain for the rest of her life as a choir nun, eventually becoming the first and only foreign-born Mother Superior of the order. Little is the author of two books focused on women in New England’s early history, including

~ News ~ Habitat for Humanity Volunteer Team to Build in Guatemala YORK COUNTY Over the past several years, Habitat for Humanity, York County has helped fund the construction of more than 32 homes for families in need in the Central American country of Guatemala. This project supports Habitat for Humanity’s mission of “A world in which every person has a decent place to live. Expanding on this effort, Habitat for Humanity York County will send a team of volunteers to Guatemala to

work on home constructions in March. It also sent a team there in 2015. The 12 volunteers are all York County residents, many of whom also volunteer at the Habitat for Humanity York County ReStore in Kennebunk. The housing deficit in Guatemala is estimated at approximately 1.2 million homes, and many families live in poorly constructed houses made of unstable materials such as adobe, corrugated metal sheets, wood planks or palm thatching. Others, who

lack even such basic structures, pay over half their monthly incomes on rent or crowd into homes where several families occupy the same small house or room. The team will travel to the Guastatoya District of the country and work at an altitude of

1,700+ feet on the construction of homes for two families. “The volunteer team’s role in the project is to provide labor for the build. While we’re only there for 9 days, it is estimated we reduce construction time on the project by a month, says Bill Parks, who is the team leader.

“Working alongside local contractors with rudimentary tools and the family members who must also work on their future home never fails to give volunteers a deeper appreciation of their own home and family, See HABITAT page 8...

~ News ~ Wells High School Students to Compete on Maine Quiz Program WELLS Six Wells High School students have been selected to form a team consisting of four players and two alternates to represent WHS on a new television quiz program created by Maine Public called “The High School Quiz Show: Maine. The program will feature eight high school teams from around Maine in three levels of competition including a final championship round. Maine Public was formerly known as the Maine Public Broadcasting Network. High schools wishing to send a team had to first qualify interested students. This was done with a preliminary test provided by Maine Public. Out of the 30 schools to take this quali-

fying test, only the eight highest scoring schools were selected to appear on the program. WHS English teacher Ann Bechan was appointed to be the team’s coach. Bechan initially gathered together a group of students from various grade levels for the preliminary test. Now, with her team in place, Bechan is conducting practice sessions until the quarter-finals in March. The idea to enter the contest was that of WOCSD volunteer, Lou Macellaro, who learned of the competition in the fall and presented the idea to Assistant Principal Josh Gould. “It is publicity for the school said Macellaro who believes the competition is also good for the WHS student community. Macellaro believes

students will watch the show when it is aired and participate in the excitement of the games “vicariously through television. The website mainepublic.

Health & Fitness Local Family Fights Children’s Alzheimer’s with Fundraiser WELLS Two-year-old Spencer Smith, Grandson of Dale and Charlene Smith of Wells, was recently diagnosed with Sanfilippo Syndrome, also known as the childhood Alzheimer’s disease. The family is racing to raise funds to help him, and on February 25 they are hosting an ‘80s Dance Party at the Elks Lodge in Saco, 68 Ocean Park Road. Tickets are $10. Sanfilippo Syndrome is a genetic neurological disorder that prevents the body from

breaking down cellular waste. Children with the disease gradually begin losing their ability to speak, lose their hearing and then their ability to walk. Hyperactivity, sleeping problems and seizures are also features of San-

filippo. Life expectancy is early teens. The disease has no cure. To help Spencer, the Smiths and Methots have teamed up with a group of families from across the US who are raising money for the Cure Sanfilippo Foundation,

3 Costly Errors To Avoid With DeathBed Planning www.seniorplanningcenter.com

207-332-6732 Serving Southern Maine & NH

Kathy Kotakis, MBA

It’s the inevitable moment people don’t like to think about – or talk about. Eventually, life comes to an end. And too often when that day arrives, people have failed to put their financial houses in order – which could prove costly for their survivors. “Most people know their death will be an emotional blow to their loved ones, but it’s likely to be a financial blow as well,” says Tony Perrone, president of the Estate and Business Planning Group and author of “I Didn’t Know I Could Do That: 9 Financial Strategies That Can Save or Make You Money.” Perrone says he routinely sees at least three costly mistakes

people make when it comes to money and death: • Giving away stocks or other appreciating assets as gifts. Older people often like to give some of their wealth to their children or grandchildren as gifts before they die. But Perrone says that can be a mistake when it comes to stocks and other appreciating assets. Here’s why: Let’s say you bought $100,000 worth of stock 30 years ago and it’s worth $1 million today. If you sold it, you would have to pay a capital gains tax on the $900,000 the stock earned. If you gave some-

Recent Scam Targets Restaurants STATEWIDE The IRS recently sent a notice regarding a new scam targeting restaurants and others. Here's how the scam works: Cybercriminals use various spoofing techniques to disguise an email to make it appear as if it is from an organization executive. The email is sent to an employee in the payroll or human resources departments, requesting a list of all employees and their Forms W-2. Falling victim to this scam can be devastating to your employees. FMI: http:// files.constantcontact.com. BUSINESS & FINANCE ...PLAN from page 14 one that stock as a gift, they would get smacked with that same tax burden. Leave an heir the stock in your will, though, and something called steppedup cost basis allows them to avoid that big tax burden. With stepped-up cost basis, the stock gets a fresh start and the person only has to pay capital gains tax on what it earns after they inherit it. • Keeping all your assets under joint ownership. When you’re married, it’s natural to put everything in both your names. But it’s not the prudent approach when it comes to appreciating assets, such as brokerage accounts, individual stocks and investment real estate, Perrone says. That’s because when one of you dies, the surviving spouse loses half of the stepped-up cost basis benefit. Take that $1 million worth of stock that was purchased for $100,000. If it was under joint ownership, when you died the $1 million would be added to $100,000, then divided by two.

The resulting $550,000 would be the new cost basis for the surviving spouse. If the spouse tried to sell it at the $1 million value, he or she would pay taxes on $450,000. If the ownership hadn’t been in both names, the spouse would owe no taxes. Instead of joint ownership, you could title the account to read POD (Paid on Death) or TOD (Transfer on Death) or ITF (In Trust For), which allows the spouse to receive it without losing the stepped-up cost basis benefit. • Failing to plan at all. This goes back to that hesitancy about talking about death. That’s where a financial professional could come in handy. That person won’t bring the emotional baggage to the subject that you do. “They can provide you with an objective look at the facts, pointing out what you should be doing and how to go about doing it,â€? Perrone says. “One other mistake people make is they wait until death is knocking at their door before they start looking into what to do with their estate,â€? Perrone says. “But tax laws won’t allow some

last-minute switches you might want to make. “And planning under duress and with a deadline isn’t the same as calmly considering your options, taking the time to truly understand them and then acting on them. Tony Perrone, author of “I Didn’t Know I Could Do That: 9 Financial Strategies That Can Save or Make You Money (www.DropHelp.com), is president and founder of the Estate and Business Planning Group. As a financial professional, his focus is designing income-producing portfolios for retirement. Please consult your tax advisor or attorney regarding your

Marion W. Giles, 91 WELLS – Marion W. Giles, 91, longtime resident of Drakes Island in Wells, died peacefully on Monday, January 30, 2017. Marion, affectionately known as “Yamma” to family

and friends, Marion was born in Cleveland and grew up in Longmeadow, MA. She earned her Associates Degree from Larson Jr. College. In 1946, after his return from WWII, Marion married Cary Stuart Giles. Together they raised four children: Stuart of Christiansted, St. Croix, Marilyn (deceased), David of Cape Coral, Florida, and Holly of Kennebunk. Avid tennis players and terrific dancers, Marion and Cary embraced the Drakes Island community, building their first summerhouse there in 1952 and making it their year-round home after Cary retired in 1988. For years, Marion would ride her bike around the island, visiting friends and dropping off homemade goodies. They liked to travel, too,

and visited many countries and continents. Marion especially loved the warmth of the Caribbean and spent many winters in the islands, particularly Grand Cayman. Full of pep, fun and persistence, Marion was a force of nature-a “dance on the table” kind of lady. Active in the Drakes Island and River Club (Kennebunkport) communities, Marion wouldn’t sit on the bench for anything-well into her 80’s she played tennis, power-walked on the beach, and enjoyed gardening, bird watching, and social and family gettogethers. Marion’s energy and spunk live on in her 10 grandchildren, and 2 (soon to be 3) great grandchildren. A gathering for family and friends will be held at Drakes Island in June and will be an-

nounced at that time. Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Animal Welfare Society, PO Box 43, West Kennebunk, ME 04094; or Laudholm Trust, PO Box 1007, Wells, ME 04090. To share a memory or leave a message of condolence, please visit Marion’s Book of Memories Page at www.bibberfuneral.com. Arrangements are in care of Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk.

Andrew D’Angio White to be Installed as Rector KENNEBUNK On Sunday, February 26, at 4 p.m., the Rev. Andrew D’Angio White will be installed as the 4th rector of St. David’s Episcopal Church in Kennebunk. D’Angio White, 32, celebrated his first Sunday with the people of St. David’s on December 4, 2016. He comes to Maine from Newark, NY, east of Rochester, where he served as Rector for the Northeast Partners in Episcopal Ministry (NPEM), a cluster of three congregations (plus a summer chapel) that share clergy leadership. During his tenure, NPEM was recognized for their contributions to the farmworker community by Rural and Migrant Ministry, a New York-based service and advocacy group. “I am thrilled to be joining the people of Saint David’s and to be starting a new chapter together”, says D’Angio White. “Saint David’s is a vibrant community dedicated to sharing the Gospel and I’m honored to serve with them.”

James Thomas Langevin, 27 The Rev. Andrew D’Angio White presides at a Eucharist assisted by Deacons The Rev. Kris Conley, left and The Rev. Gail Chandler, right.

D’Angio White was chosen to lead the congregation after a 24 month process of discernment led by lay members. Warden Bruce Brauninger said, “Father Andrew is a collaborative leader, well spoken, a good listener, and brings a lot of energy to St. David’s. We are excited to have him lead our parish.” Members of the community are welcome to gather for the installation as the church marks the celebration of D’Angio White’s new role with the church. The Rev. Canon Michael Ambler, representing the Episcopal Diocese of Maine, will officiate. The Rev. Jennifer Zogg, rector of the Church of the Epiphany in Rumford, RI, will

~ Ask The Computer Lady & Technology ~

Dear Computer Lady, My computer has a lot of apps running when I look at Task Manager. How do I know which ones I can delete to make my computer run faster? If I delete one will it start up the next time I turn on my computer or is canceled forever? Thanks for your help. Kris Dear Kris, First, we need to determine what part of Task Manager you are viewing. Task Manager shows you what apps are currently running, what background processes are running, in addition to a lot of other things. If you are looking to stop apps from automatically starting every time Windows starts, you need to click on the "Startup" tab in Task Manager. If the startup tab is not visible, click "More Details" in the lower-left corner of the task manager window. Once you have clicked on the "Startup" tab, you will be looking at the apps that are starting every time Windows starts. If you want to stop

an app from starting, right click on it and click, "Disable" in the context menu. Your app will still be listed in the startup list, but the status will change to "Disabled". Most of those apps will be easy to identify, and you can safely disable any of them (I would NOT disable your antivirus program however). When you disable an item on the startup list, it will stay disabled until you change it back to enabled. You can, however run the program any time you want by running it from the start menu. If you see an entry that you can't identify, right click on it, then click "Search Online" this will take you to search results for that file. I hope this helps your computer run faster. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, How do I unsubscribe from You Tube Red? I don't know how I subscribed to it in the first place...I must have hit something. Is there a difference between You Tube and You Tube Red? Thank you for your help, Feeley Dear Feeley,

3. Click on the link that says, "Cancel Membership." 4. Confirm your decision by clicking on "Yes, Cancel." Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady: Do “restart” and “reboot” mean the same thing? I see both terms used, but am not sure if there's a difference between them. Thank you for all you do! Mrs H. Dear Mrs. H, Yes, restart and reboot both mean that you shut the computer down, and then start it back up again. Sometimes turning your computer on is referred to as, "Booting" your computer, which is where the term, "reboot" comes from. I'm glad you asked this question! Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, On my computer, I used to be able to right-click on things

and get a menu that would help me perform certain tasks related to the thing I right-clicked on. Now that I am using a touch screen on my laptop, I can tap instead of click, but how do I righttap? Thanks, Kris Dear Kris, I am glad to hear that you have learned to right-click on icons to get more options. On your touchscreen, you can get the same list of shortcuts by holding your tap for a second or so. Then, when you lift your finger that same context menu will appear. Manage Teams, Clubs and Leagues in a Digital World Sports leagues, after-school clubs and other extracurricular activities enjoyed by children and their parents would not be possible without the volunteer efforts of fellow parents and other adults. Very often an entire committee of volunteers gathers to make a sports team or group successful, and much of their work is being done behind the scenes. Managing a recreational group is no small undertaking. Such an endeavor requires the patience and perseverance of volunteers ready to juggle a variety

of tasks. While in the past there may have been few resources to aid in such tasks, today’s technology makes it easier to handle the responsibilities that come with managing a team. The vast array of apps available for smartphones, tablets and other devices can alleviate some of the work for recreational group managers. The following are just a handful of applications league managers can consider to coordinate efforts across the board. See MANAGE page 27...

SPORTS ...MANAGE from page 22 * Team Snap: Team Snap is one of the premier team and club management services available (www.teamsnap.com). This software helps anyone, even those with little or no website design experience, run a team, league or other organization online. The team is managed by a team owner who can choose free services or a tiered payment plan depending on the option that owner chooses. Team members are invited to join free, where they can message other players, check calendars and even get text message alerts. * Team Pages: Having a cur-

rent and well-designed website can encourage others to be more involved and invested in a particular team or league. However, sometimes getting a website up and running can be challenging, particularly to the novice designer. With Team Pages (www.teampages.com), anyone can create a sport- or club-themed website and have it live in a manner of minutes. Drop and drag layout design options makes creating multiple pages even easier, and there is a calendar option for keeping track of games and other meetings. * Active: Active (www.

active.com) is the leader in online event registrations, from marathons to softball leagues. Visitors can search for various activityinspired events nearby and learn more about sports leagues for children and adults. In addition, the site features informative articles on nutrition, player improvement tips, medical information, and much more as it pertains to activities. * League Athletics: This tool (www.leagueathletics.com) mixes team website design with league management and registration. WELLS Due to the winter storms The Beachmere Inn’s “Give Back Dinner Series, has been rescheduled to February 19, 5-9 p.m. We’re grateful to be chosen to be a recipient of this generous fundraiser. Reservations are encouraged at 207-646-2021. The Beachmere Inn is located at 62 Beachmere Lane in Ogunquit. We are so encouraged to see some of our long term kitties getting such wonderful homes! Many of the kitties that are still

Few will adopt a kitty that doesn’t demonstrate affection or interest in people. For that reason, Safe Haven has a kitty Socializing Team that helps our shy kitties move forward. Please consider joining our team! Just a couple hours a week is all we ask for someone to be a team member. If interested, please call our center at 207-646-1611. Both are well-behaved, sweet and gentle, looking for a family or single person that could keep them together. Both are neutered, current on all vaccinations, and have passed their wellness exam. Both boys indoor-only kitties and are def-
