Thirteen Fallen Soldiers Honored by York Boys’ Hockey YORK / DOVER, NH The York Boys’ Hockey team played their annual Military Appreciation Game at the Dover Ice Arena on Monday, February 7. Traditionally, this event is an opportunity to honor all those who have served and/or are serving in the United States Military. It is through their incredible sacrifices that we are able to enjoy the freedoms that we cherish in this country. In preparation for this night the Senior hockey players visited the NHANG (New Hampshire Air National Guard) where they toured a KC-46 Air Refueling Plane and were taught how to

fold the American Flag by the Pease Honor Guard. The Honor Guard joined them for the game along with several members from the York Maine Veterans of Foreign Wars.

This year the hockey team chose to honor the thirteen U.S. service men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice on August 26, 2021 in Kabul, Afghanistan. They died in the line

of duty as they were evacuating military and civilian citizens. They were attacked with suicide bombs and gun fire by members of the Islamic State. Two flags were folded on the ice by the York Senior players. One flag was presented to Brenda Blonigen, Commander of the Boardman, Ellis VFW Post 6977 in York. Commander Blonigen accepted the flag in honor of the 13 Fallen Soldiers. The flag will be displayed at the VFW with a plaque with the names of the thirteen fallen soldiers: Marine Sgt. Johanny Rosario Pichardo, 25, of Lawrence, MA; Marine Sgt. Nicole L. Gee,

23, of Sacramento, CA; Marine Staff Sgt. Darin T. Hoover, 31, of Salt Lake City, UT; Marine Cpl. Hunter Lopez, 22, of Indio, CA; Marine Cpl. Daegan W. Page, 23, of Omaha, NE; Marine Cpl. Humberto A. Sanchez, 22, of Logansport, IN; Marine Lance Cpl. David L. Espinoza, 20, of Rio Bravo, TX; Marine Lance Cpl. Jared M. Schmitz, 20, of St. Charles, MO; Marine Lance Cpl. Rylee J. KITTERY Portal Crane 79 (PC-79), a heavy lift portal crane arrived at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard by barge on February 11 from Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PSNS & IMF) in Washington state. respectively. PC-79 was originally procured by the Charleston Naval Shipyard, in Charleston, S.C. When Charleston and Mare Island were closed in the 1990s, PC-79 was sent to PSNS & IMF, while Mare Island’s crane made its way to Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard, where it resides today. “We welcome PC-79 back to the east coast after her tour at

Puget Sound Naval Shipyard,” said Shipyard Commander, Captain Michael Oberdorf. “The addition of this crane increases our lifting capacity to support future submarine availabilities so we can keep our nation’s submarines where they belong – at sea as the pointed end of the spear.” PC-79 weighs 2.2 million pounds and has a lifting capacity

of 171.5 tons. The journey from PSNS & IMF to PNS took approximately 80 days to complete after multiple weather delays. PC-79, along with PC-38, are integral to future maintenance work planned for PNS. Prior to the arrival of these two heavy lift cranes, Portsmouth’s portal crane lifting capacity was limited to 60 tons. Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is America’s leader for attack submarine maintenance, repair, and modernization. The on-time completion of submarine availabilities is critical to maintaining the U.S. See CRANE page 3...

Why Do We Celebrate Presidents’ Day? NATIONWIDE Presidents’ Day is a federal holiday celebrated each year on the third Monday in February. The holiday was originally established in 1885 to recognize George Washington, but after it was moved as part of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act to create more three-day weekends for the nation’s workers in 1971, it became known as a day to cel-

before being fully utilized. “Receiving PC-79 increases our capabilities as a shipyard and will serve as a back-up heavy lift crane to PC-38 once all certifications are complete,” said Project Manager Jason Jordan. “PC-79 provides redundancy to ensure we can perform scheduled maintenance and certifications on one crane while the other is available for lifts. Personnel from across the NAVSEA Corporation have agreed to assist PNS in our initial servicing, truly making this a team effort.” PC-79 was built under the same contract as two sister cranes, PC-78 and PC-77, which were sent to PSNS & IMF and Mare Island,

ebrate all past and present U.S. presidents. George Washington and Abraham Lincoln both have birthdays in February, so the holiday celebrations tend to focus around these two famous presidents. Although most businesses will be open for Presidents’ Day, most schools, post offices, government offices, and banks will not be open.
