Loved & Respected Wells Police Dog Retires

Wells Police Chief Jo-Ann Putnam, Captain Kevin Chabot, and Jagger. (Photo by Reg Bennett)

WELLS At their February 4 meeting, the Wells Board of Selectmen voted to retire Wells Police Department’s police dog, Jagger, a 7-year-old German Shepard originally from Canada and a certified patrol dog since 2014. Last November, Jagger was diagnosed with terminal cancer. As a result of that diagnosis, one of the canine’s front legs and part of his shoulder had to be amputated. Jagger’s handler, WPD Captain Kevin Chabot, and his family were in the audience to see the badge-wearing police dog honored and retired after more than six years of service to the department. He was deployed over 190 times during his

time with the Wells PD. Among his other attributes, Jagger is known for his tracking skills, enthusiasm for work, and friendly disposition when out in the community. At the podium, Wells Police Chief Jo-Ann Putnam spoke and introduced Captain Chabot and Jagger. Following remarks from Putnam and Chabot, Maine State Representative, Daniel Hobbs, read a letter of appreciation for Jagger’s service. This was followed by Wells Town Manager Jonathan Carter who presented Chabot and Jagger with a plaque for their service to the community. The Board of Selectmen then voted to authorize the canine officer’s retirement and the sale of Jagger to Chabot for one dollar so that Jagger

can spend the rest of his life at the Chabot home. “Jagger and Captain Chabot were a very dedicated K-9 team,” commented Chief Putnam later. “Jagger was very good at what he did and was always ready to come to work when called upon. He was also a great ambassador for the department doing many K-9 demonstrations throughout his career for schools and different public events.” “Patrol dogs are used for criminal apprehension and finding children and other at-risk persons that have become lost or wandered off,” added Chief Putnam. “Jagger will be missed but I wish him well in retirement.”

With 211, they speak directly with an actual person right here in Maine. That is so valuable.” In addition to helping Mainers connect to the spectrum of health and human services, 211 is involved in specific initiatives like the Maine Opiate Helpline. 211 works in partnership with Maine Department of Health and Human Services to provide a tollfree statewide helpline for individuals seeking services for opiate use. Mardi Gras, or “Fat Tuesday,” traces its origins to France, and these traditions were transfered throughout the world as France colonized different regions. Parties and fanfare are just one of the ways to commemorate the last day before the period of fasting and repentance known as Lent in the Christian calendar. The Life and Influences of First Lady Frances Folsom Cleveland Our speaker, Margaret Cleveland, is the youngest grandchild of First Lady Frances Folsom Cleveland and President Grover Cleveland. Her father, Richard, was their oldest son, born in 1897, the year Cleveland left office. It was said the President left the White House to get “a little son and heir”. Margaret was raised in Baltimore and attended Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY, and pursued graduate level studies at Harvard and the University of Southern Maine. She has enjoyed an eclectic career including work in network news, educational publishing, theater administration, healthcare, adult and Margaret Cleveland higher education. Today she works as an organizational behavior consultant. She is also a certified ADHD coach, helping adults unlock barriers to improved executive function. Outside her working life Margaret serves as the chair of the board of The Barnstormers Theatre in Tamworth, NH. She is also working her own writing project – a family memoir. Margaret will speak about her Grandmother Frances Folsom, who at age 21 became the country’s youngest ever First Lady when she married 49 year-old, bachelor president Grover Cleveland. She will tell you about how in little time Frances’ influence was widely felt and continued long after she left the White House. It’s a story of romance and intellect, humor and grace, tragedy and triumph. Margaret’s talk will include highlights of Frances Folsom’s rich life before, during and after the White House.

...MARDI from page 3 giving foods up has remained. In certain areas, Mardi Gras and Carnival will begin on January 6 this year with the celebration of the Epiphany, also known as Three Kings’ Day. Celebrations then last until midnight on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. Christians then forgo festivities in exchange for solemn reflection and preparation for the joys of Easter. New Orleans is by far the most popular location in North America in which to celebrate Mardi Gras. However, according to the History Channel, New Orleans did not host the first North American Mardi Gras. French soldiers feasted and wore masks as part of Mardi Gras festivities in 1703 in the newly founded city of Mobile in present-day Alabama. Mardi Gras gained steam in New Orleans soon after the city’s founding in 1718. Today’s Mardi Gras celebrations can be lavish and raucous. During such celebrations, copious amounts of food and drink are typically consumed, and krewes, which are organizations of revelers, host Mardi Gras balls and ride floats in the New Orleans parade. These krewes also toss beads to revelers. The King Cake also is featured during Mardi Gras celebrations. This cake, typically made with brioche dough, is only available during Mardi Gras season. The bread-like cake is braided, dusted with cinnamon and glazed with Mardi Gras colors. A small plastic baby is hidden inside the cake. Whoever discovers it in his or her slice must buy the cake or host a party the following year. Mardi Gras is a celebration that immediately precedes the Christian season of Lent. Fanfare, food and friends are keys to the festivities.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~

Dear Computer Lady, How do I turn off the talking assistant, Cortana in Windows 10? Thanks, Elaine Dear Elaine, Cortana is the digital assistant in Windows 10, and while you might like her, many people just don’t need to talk to their computer and ask questions. Here is how to turn off Cortana in Windows 10: 1. Click on the Cortana

icon. (It is a small circle on your taskbar, which displays “Talk To Cortana” when you rest your mouse pointer over it. 2. Click on the “Notebook” icon in the menu that opens, then click, “Settings”. 3. The top option which says that Cortana can give you suggestions, ideas, reminders, etc has a blue switch, just click on it to turn Cortana off. 4. Now, your taskbar will have a search icon (magnifying

glass) instead of the Cortana icon. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I keep up on your great Q&A in The Weekly Sentinel. Here’s my question: How can I protect an Excel spreadsheet from being opened without a password? Thank you for any information, Lisa Dear Lisa, It is fairly simple to password protect your spreadsheet in

Excel, but before we get started, I want to warn you that if you lose or forget the password, the spreadsheet will be lost to you forever. First, decide on a password, and write it down for future reference. Next, open your spreadsheet and click on the “File” tab in the ribbon. In the “Info” section, find the icon that says, “Protect Workbook” and click on it to

display more options. In the Protect Workbook drop-down list, click on, “Encrypt With Password”. This will open a small dialog box. Enter your password, click “OK” and repeat the password and “OK”. Now, close your spreadsheet and when you see the dialog box asking if you want to save your changes, click “Yes”. If you don’t save your changes, the See COMPUTER page 9...

I try control-Alt-Delete but the task manager will not come up. I have to manually shut it down and then reboot it to get it to work again. Have you come across this problem before? Sincerely, Kelly Dear Kelly, It sounds like the problem is not with your mouse pointer, but with the computer freezing up. This can be caused by many things, often the culprit is some sort of malware or advertising software. It could be caused by overheating, but if it was overheating then you would have to wait a while after rebooting for it to cool down before it would work again. I would start by going to the control panel and uninstalling any programs that you don’t need. Be sure to remove any search helpers, toolbars, any-

Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, How can I connect my printer to my computer to make it scan? Thanks, Lee Dear Lee, You haven’t given me a lot of details to work with, but I can give you some general directions. First, you need to determine what version of Windows you are using.

With this information, you will be able to go to the website of your printer manufacturer (don’t go to a search engine and search, go directly to the manufacturer web site. www.hp.com if it is an HP printer, www.dell. com if it is a dell printer, www. brother-usa.com for a brother printer, etc.). Ogunquit Performing Arts’ to Screen “Out of Africa”

OGUNQUIT The Ogunquit Performing Arts’ 19th Annual Classic Film Series continues on Sunday, March 1with a 2 p.m. showing o “Out of Africa”. Meryl Streep and Robert Redford star in the sweeping romantic drama, “Out of Africa,” filmed on location in East Africa. This 1985 American epic romantic drama film, directed and produced by Sydney Pollack, won the Academy Award for Best Picture, plus six addi-

tional awards - including Best Cinematography for capturing the breathtaking beauty and expanse of the Kenyan wilderness. The film also won for Best Director (Sydney Pollack), Best Art Direction, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Sound, as well as a Golden Globe for Best Picture. The film will be shown on a full wall-size screen at the Dunaway Center, 23 School Street in Ogunquit with free admission, parking, and popcorn!

The film tells the autobiographical tale of the Danish writer Karen Blixen, (Meryl Streep,) and her time spent on a coffee plantation in East Africa in the early twentieth century. Blixen, in the film, marries Swedish Baron Bror Blixen-Finecke (Klaus Maria Brandauer) and moves with him to Africa. The marriage is an unhappy one, as he is a womanizer who eventually leaves her to take care of

the plantation on her own. The Baroness meets a hunter/adventurer (Robert Redford), and the two begin an idyllic love affair. The film is based loosely on the autobiographical book Out of Africa written by Isak Dinesen (Karen’s pen name), which was published in 1937, with additional material from her book Shadows on the Grass and other sources. The book was adapted into a screenplay by the writer Kurt Luedtke, and filmed in 1984.

This fundraiser event consists primarily of raffles for over 100 various themed gift baskets containing numerous items and gift certificates donated by parents of seniors and area businesses. Tickets to take a chance on winning one or more of these baskets will be sold the night of the event. There is no limit as to how

many tickets one can buy or how many baskets can be won. However, winners of baskets must be present to accept their winnings. There will also be a “silent auction” for other items, where attendees write down what they will pay for an item and try to be the highest bidder. The doors open at 6 p.m. with drawings beginning at 7:45

p.m. Ticket holders have almost two hours to walk around the basket and auction tables to examine prizes before drawings begin. Buckets are arranged in front of the baskets so that tickets can be tossed into the buckets of their choice. A variety of food items, beverages and baked goods will also be available for purchase at a low price.

Researcher to Study Why Therapeutic Horseback Riding Benefits Children With Autism PORTLAND The University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus (CU Anschutz) in Aurora, CO, in collaboration with the Maine Medical Center Research Institute, has been awarded a $2.5 million grant to study why therapeutic horseback riding benefits children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), particularly children who have co-occurring psychiatric diagnoses.

The grant from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health & Human Development of the National Institutes of Health will fund a five-year study of the physiological impacts of therapeutic horseback riding. A previous study by Principal Investigator Robin Gabriels, Psy.D., a CU Anschutz researcher and Children’s Hospital Colorado psychologist, showed that a 10-week therapeutic horseback riding

intervention reduced irritability and hyperactivity while improving the social communication skills of youth diagnosed with ASD. To learn why, Gabriels is now teaming up with MMCRI Faculty Scientist Mathew Siegel, M.D., the study’s co-investigator and leader of the Autism and Developmental Disorders Service of Maine Behavioral Healthcare. “This study is exciting because it’s not often we have a chance to try to understand why something works,” Siegel said. “Learning why will hopefully help us create other interventions that could address challenges that children with ASD face.” The study will take place this summer at Riding To The Top, a Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship Premier International Accredited Center in Windham, as well as at a center in Colorado. It will include about 142 children between ages 6 and 16 with ASD and a psychiatric diagnosis. Children will be either assigned therapeutic horseback riding or barn activities for 10-week interventions. Both groups will wear heart rate monitors and wrist bands that record changes in electrodermal activity. Saliva samples will also be taken before and 20 minutes after the interventions to measure levels of the stress hormone cortisol. “This is a wonderful opportunity for Riding To The Top’s certified instructors, volunteers, horses and many new clients to be involved in ground-breaking research that will provide more objective data as to the specific physiological changes that occur during therapeutic riding, lending further support to the work

NFPA Encourages Candle Safety Tips With cold but cozy winter nights upon us, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) encourages everyone to keep in mind candle safety tips. “Though candles add ambience, they can also result in an unplanned visit from your local fire department,” says Lorraine Carli, vice president of Outreach and Advocacy for NFPA. According to NFPA research, between 2013 and 2017, U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 7,900 home structure fires that were started by candles per year. These fires caused an annual average of 80 civilian fire deaths and 720 civilian fire injuries annually; with

three of every five (60%) home candle fires occurring when something that easily burns was left or came too close to the candle. More than one-third (37%) of home candle fires started in the bedroom. Five things you should know to avoid a candle fire: Keep candles at least 12 inches from anything that can burn; Blow out all candles before you leave a room or go to bed; If a candle must burn continuously, be sure it is enclosed in a glass container; or placed in a sink, on a metal tray, or in a deep basin filled with water; See CANDLES page 13...

Health & Fitness Caring for Older Adults: Lunchtime Learning YORK COUNTY York Hospital hosted a Lunch & Learn focused on Dementia Care and Older Adults Programming featuring Geriatrician, Elizabeth Castillo, MD, PhD on February 12 at the Trafton Senior Center in Sanford. Over 75 seniors attended the luncheon catered by Above & Beyond, and a festive atmosphere was created to celebrate Valentine’s Day, as well as exchange information and answer questions about dementia care. After starting with an exercise that encouraged participants/ guests to write down five activities they would love to do if they had a break from the ‘busy-ness’ of life and could relax and unwind happily, Dr. Castillo highlighted that these particular activities are often what make people feel that life is worth living. Dr. Castillo went on to define dementia in the context of cognitive function, social/ relational interactions, and bodily/humanity functions. Cerebroprotective activities that help build new brain cells and neuronal networks were discussed as effective treatment strategies, while attendees were encouraged to exercise and move more; sleep well; eat healthfully; foster creative self-expression through art, music, poetry, dance; and build strong social connections. For more information about dementia care or if you have concerns about a loved one, please contact the York Hospital Center for Older Adults at 207-351-2371. If transportation to York Hospital poses an issue, the Center for Older Adults offers complimentary rides both to and from appointments. Special thanks to Robin Bibber at the Trafton Senior Center for her assistance organizing this luncheon and

PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never known to fail)

O Most Beautiful Flower of Mt. Carmel, Fruitful Vine, Splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. O Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my Mother. O Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in my necessity (make request). There are none that can withstand your power. O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3 times).

ilton) Jenks once again and relieved her of her pain on January 11, 2020. She claimed it was fate that united the love of her life, her husband of 46 years, Philip A. Jenks, of Berwick. She was a delightful and youthful 88 years of age; no one guessed! This amazing woman was born in Camden, NJ, and grew up in Springfield, MA, the birthplace and home of her parents Evelyn and John Hamilton, whom she loved dearly. She lived in Fiskdale, MA, with a previous husband and bore two wonderful daughters: Linda and Lois. She was always proud of them, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ev met Phil by a fateful turn of events and became best friends by the second date and the romance continues. Ev was a kind, charitable, and friendly person who was well read, witty, highly intelligent and smart in many ways that continued to amaze her Phil, as well as deepen the love and friendship bond they shared. Her smiling presence was well known around many venues; especially dear to her were the Scottish Highland games and festivals,

which she ardently supported and attended. She could be found at both the Hamilton’s tent or the MacDonald’s (alas, the poor lass married a MacDonald!) or at others where she made friends wherever she went. As anyone who met, knew, and/ or loved her will attest, she will be sorely missed and mourned by a host of people whom this lovely woman touched; most of all, her devoted husband Phil, with whom she shall be part of always. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date and will be announced. To share a memory or leave a message of condolence, please visit Evelyn’s Book of Memories Page at www.bibberfuneral. com. Arrangements are in care of Laing Bibber Funeral Chapel, 36 Rochester Street, Berwick. THANK YOU ST. JUDE: May the Sacred Heart of Jesus be adored, glorified, loved and preserved throughout the world now and forever. Sacred Heart of Jesus, pray for us. St. Jude, worker of miracles, pray for us. St. Jude, helper of the hopeless, pray for us. Say this prayer 9 times a day, by the 9th day your prayers will be answered. It has never been known to fail. Publication must be promised and done.

Bernier-Gelinas FUNERAL HOME

Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

bereaved’s feelings in the patterns of community support which are psychologically beneficial. Flowers, however, express the inexpressible – they are symbolic.

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

Frances “Frankie” Hope Norton, 2 WELLS – Frances “Frankie” Hope Norton left this earth on February 14, 2020, because God needed an angel. In her short time with us (born May 12, 2017), she brought so much joy to her family and everyone she met. She loved Frozen, wearing pretty dresses, going to the beach, playing on playgrounds, shopping at Wal-Mart, hosting tea parties, snuggling with Mama, and so much more. Frankie had the biggest heart and loved everyone she met. She was the perfect combination of sweet and sassy and had the best laugh. She lit up every room she set foot in since she was so full of life. She adored her Mama, Dada, five big sisters, family, and friends. Frankie will forever be loved and missed by her parents David Erwin and Beth Norton; sisters Kayleigh Erwin, Jennifer Erwin, Rosemary Norton, Belle Norton; and Alexandra Webber and her husband Timothy Webber; maternal grandparents Mary and Ron Norton; paternal grandparents David and Patricia Erwin; aunts and uncles Stanley and Melissa Norton, Chuck and Kendi Norton, Jonathan and Jonquil Norton, Emily and Nick Clemens, Kathy and Jason Valera, Kim Erwin, and Shayla Conte; cousins Reed, Ryan, Charley, Rylee, Elijah, Katherine, Zoey, Tyler, Maggie, and Mathew. She will also be greatly missed by her countless friends and extended family.

The family would like to thank the whole crew in the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital PICU at Maine Medical Center for trying so hard to bring their Frankie back. They know she was in the best hands. Visitation was held on Thursday, February 20, 1-3 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk. Friends and family will celebrate a funeral mass on Friday, February 21 at 11 a.m. at Holy Spirit Parish, St. Mary’s Church, 236 Eldridge Road, Wells. Interment will be private. If you would like to make a donation, please make one to the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital PICU, 22 Bramhall Street, Portland, ME 04102 in honor of Frankie Hope. To share a memory or leave a message of condolence, please visit Frankie‘s Book of Memories Page at www.bibberfuneral. com. SPORTS

Final Charlie Brown Memorial Basketball Clinic this February YORK York Parks & Recreation and the York Police Department are proud to be hosting the 30th Annual (and FINAL) Charlie Brown Memorial Basketball Classic from February 27 to March 8. This tournament has been a staple in the southern Maine basketball community for three decades, with boy and girl teams in grades 3-8 with 60 teams and over 800 kids participating in an eleven-day, double elimination tournament. When deciding if this would be the last year, York Parks & Rec considered how the scene of recreation basketball has changed in the time this tournament has been running. Many kids now play a single sport yearround, participating on multiple teams, leagues and specialized clinics, which was unheard of when this tournament began. Over the years it’s also become

increasingly difficult to find volunteers to assist with this tournament, which is paramount to its success. Everyone except the referees are volunteers, from those in concessions, admissions, running clocks and announcing the games. This tournament was created by the late YPD officer Charles E. Brown, to bring a community together, so as volunteer numbers have declined each year, much thought was given as to whether the event’s mission was being met and if the community could be reached in different and better ways. Although it’s never easy to see such long-standing and meaningful programs end, the response and support over the years has been thrilling. The event organizers say that whether you’ve volunteered in the past, know a player or want to simply support this community effort, they hope the public comes out to make this final year a slam dunk!

Don’t Forget Unified Basketball Upcoming Games!

~ News & Classifieds ~ Bill Protecting Energy Grid from Cyberattacks Becomes Law WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senators Angus King (I-Maine) and Jim Risch (R-Idaho), both members of the Senate Intelligence Committee and the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, celebrated the enactment of their bipartisan Securing Energy Infrastructure Act into law. The legislation passed as part of the FY2020 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), and will develop defenses for the U.S. energy grid through partnerships between the National Laboratories and industry. The partnerships will utilize engineering concepts to remove vulnerabilities that could allow hackers to access the grid and the nation’s critical infrastructure.

“The energy grid is central to nearly all facets of 21st century life, but remains vulnerable to hackers,” said Senator King, cochair of the Cyberspace Solarium Commission. “If this critical infrastructure is compromised, our financial transactions, communications networks, healthcare services, and much more will be at risk. This bipartisan, commonsense legislation will help defend our energy grid from attacks launched from thousands of miles away – I’m heartened to see this much-needed provision signed into law, and deeply grateful for the partnership of Senator Risch in this effort.” “The vulnerabilities afflicting our critical infrastruc-

MMS National Geography Bee ELIOT Nine students participated in the annual National Geography Bee at Marshwood Middle School on Wednesday, January 22. Eva Hersey, a seventh-grader, won first place with Fiona Williams winning second place and Mary Keene finishing in third place (pictured below). The school competition is the first round in the annual National Geographic GeoBee, a geography competition de-

signed to inspire and reward students’ curiosity about the world. Questions cover not only geography but also ancient and world civilizations, cultures, and physical features. School champions, including Eva, will take an online qualifying test. Then, up to 100 of the top test scorers in each state become eligible to compete in their state GeoBee on March 27. The winner of the state bee receives an all-ex-

ture are deeply troubling and there is strong bipartisan agreement that this issue requires our immediate attention,” said Senator Risch. “The Securing Energy Infrastructure Act has been many years in the making, and am confident our national laboratories, particularly the INL in my home state of Idaho, will lead this important research aimed at strengthening our grid security and preventing catastrophic cyberattacks.” The Securing Energy Infrastructure Act aims to remove vulnerabilities that could allow hackers to access the energy grid through holes in digital software systems. Specifically the Securing Energy Infrastructure Act will direct the Department of

Energy to examine ways to replace networked systems with less complex connections limiting paths to attack the systems. More specifically, the legislation will: Establish a two-year pilot program within the National Laboratories to study covered entities and identify new classes of security vulnerabilities, and research and test technology that could be used to isolate the most critical systems of covered entities from cyber-attacks. Require the establishment of a working group to evaluate the technology solutions proposed by the National Laboratories and to develop a national cyber-informed strategy to isolate the energy grid from attacks.
