Text to 911 is Now Available Throughout Maine STATEWIDE The Maine Public Utilities Commission (Commission) announced that text to 911 is now available at all 911 Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) throughout Maine. The Commission’s Emergency Services Communications Bureau (ESCB) has been working with major wireless telecommunications carriers over the last several months to complete and test this advancement in technology.
Texting 911 should only be used when making a voice call to 911 is not an option. Citizens and visitors throughout Maine can send a short text message to 911 in an emergency. Text-to-911 is intended primarily for use in two emergency scenarios: for those individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing or speech impaired, and for those unable to make a voice call, for example during a medical emergency that renders the person incapable of
speech, or in the instance of a home invasion or abduction. “Text to 911 technology could be a life-saver, especially for people who might otherwise not be able to make a voice call” said Chairman Mark Vannoy. “This is a major technology advancement, and Maine is among the first in the nation to successfully implement this important technology which takes advantage of our advanced Next Generation 9-1-1 system.”
The Commission urges Mainers to keep the following in mind if they send a text to 911: The texting option should only be used when making a voice call to 911 is not an option. Using a phone to call 911 is still the most efficient way to get emergency help. Providing location information and the nature of the emergency in the first text message is imperative, since the See TEXT page 4...

~ News ~ Student Entrepreneurs Operate “Stores to Learn Basic Economics WELLS Students in grades 3 and 4 in Ms. Stapleton’s and Ms. Bush’s classes at Wells Elementary School were busy in the weeks prior to the holiday season creating crafts and gathering other items to sell at their craft fair for the school community last December. As in the past three years, students stocked and managed their own stores serving customers that included fellow students, staff members, parents, and others who used teacher provided “checks as currency. “The students take complete ownership in the project, said teacher Beth Bush. “The best part is that they participate multiple times during their years in multi- 3 & 4 so they understand the subtle changes they can make for a successful business. In this bi-annual project, students get to experience cooperation, planning, budgeting, balancing a checkbook, saving money, spending earnings wisely and accountability in keeping sales and expense records. The project also presents opportunities for parents and students to work together. The currency students accumulate from the sales can be used at the school store, a concept created several years ago as a motivational component in a behavioral program. “The Holiday Craft Fair is a fun and learning filled event! described teacher Melissa Sta-

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~
Dear Computer Lady, I want to know how to send a Microsoft Word document as a file attachment on an email message. Can you explain the process to me? I am using Gmail for my e-mail program. Thank you, Dave Dear Dave, First you need to know the file name and location of your Word document. Let’s say it’s called “DearBob.doc” but you have no idea where it is on your computer. To find it, click on start, and click where it says, “Type here to search”. In that box, type “DearBob. doc” without the quotation marks. Click on the sheet of paper icon at the top of the dialog box (if you hover your mouse over the icon, it will say, “Find results in documents”), and windows will search for your document. If you can’t remember exactly what you named the document, type “*.doc” in the find window.
The star is a wildcard, and windows will find every file ending with “.doc”. Once you have found the file, notice where it is located. Let’s say “DearBob.doc” is located in your documents folder. Now open Gmail, click on “Compose” to start a new message and click on the paper clip icon near the bottom of the window. A file explorer window will open. Click on “Documents” in the left column, then on your document in the right side of the window. Once you have clicked to select your document, click the “Open” button in the lower-right of the dialog box, and Gmail will attach the document to your email message. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I receive almost weekly calls from some company that tells me that my computer is sending all kinds of information from windows out to the internet and they
eatingOil.com H h lc e W : e n li n O r e Ord 70 Or Call: (207) 363-27 Serving Southern ME & Seacoast NH
represent the Windows company and need to access my computer in order to fix the problem. This has been going on for a couple of years. I view this as a fraud and never allow them to access my computer, and have repeatedly asked them to discontinue the calls. This never happens. Am I mistaken or is this real? If it is fraudulent how can I stop the calls? Thanks for your helpful responses to other problems. Hope you can help, Paul Dear Paul, I get these calls too. You are right to hang up on them, it is nothing more than a scam. Microsoft will never call you to tell you that your computer is having problems. Often, the scammers will have you sit at your computer and bring up a screen with a long identification number that they will then read to you (it is supposed to be proof that they are getting the signal from your computer) the thing is, this number that they have you display on your screen is THE SAME ON EVERY WINDOWS COMPUTER! They try to tell you that it is a unique identification number for your computer, but it is not. Asking them to stop calling you will do no good. They are not legitimate, law abiding companies. The only way to get them to stop calling you is to change to an unlisted telephone number. Elizabeth

Dear Gary, The reason I feel so strongly about backing up one’s files is because I have seen how devastated people are when they realize that their photos or work documents are gone. If your files are important to you, you need to take care of them. I like to keep my files in three locations. 1. On my computer. 2. On an external hard drive that is connected to my computer. 3. In a remote location that is not connected to my computer. The first two locations protect me from hard drive failure, which is still fairly common. The third, remote location, protects me from fire, flood, theft, natural disaster, and a type of nasty malware called, ransomware. If your files are already on your computer, and also on an external hard drive, putting them on another external hard drive won’t help much, unless you are keeping one of the external drives in a different physical location. You could use two external hard drives, and rotate them, keeping one at another location and switching them every week. An easier off-site backup would be a backup service like Carbonite. I’m glad you are thinking about backing up, many people don’t until it is too late. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have over 3,000 photos on
my iPhone 4s. Should I put them on my computer or onto a disk? There are too many for one disk. How would I do this? Kathy Dear Kathy, You should always have more than one copy of your important files, so if these photos are important to you, yes, you should put them on your computer, on one or more disks, or both. Your first step is to get the pictures on your computer. There are a couple of ways to do this, one is to use iTunes on your computer, then plug in your phone and sync the photos using iTunes. I have all the photos on my iPhone backed up to iCloud, and then use www.icloud.com on my computer to access my photos. This way, the pictures are on my phone, on my computer, and backed up on iCloud. Another way to get them off your phone is to email them as attachments, but with over 3,000 photos, that would be very time consuming. Once you have the photos on your computer, you should be able to easily back them up to an optical disks like a CD or DVD, or back them up to an external hard drive. I use Roxio Creator to put files on optical disks, and I usually just drag and drop files when using external drives. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Elizabeth has answered thousands of computer questions over the years. Come browse her articles, watch instructional videos, ask questions, and view comments at www.askthecomputerlady.com.

~ News ~ Sen. Lawrence Appointed to Advisory Commissions YORK Senate President Troy Jackson, D-Allagash, has appointed Sen. Lawrence, D-Eliot, to serve on the Maine-Canadian Legislative Advisory Commission and the New England Eastern Canada Legislative Commission. “As neighbors, it’s critical Mainers and Canadians work together to promote initiatives for our mutual benefit,” said Senator Lawrence. Lawrence, who speaks French and has a long history of participation in relations between Maine and the neighboring Canadian provinces, is one of two senators approved to each commission. The Maine-Canadian Leg-
islative Advisory Commission is composed of lawmakers from Maine and Canada. Those from Maine are split between the House and the Senate equally, with at least one member from each house in the legislature who is fluent in French. The purpose of this commission is to strengthen the relations between the Legislature of Maine and the corresponding legislative bodies in Canada. This includes engaging in regional cooperation through economic, cultural, and educational exchanges. The commission includes lawmakers from New England as well as lawmakers from Eastern Canada focused on regional relations.

People Welcomed to Maine with New Border Sign AUGUSTA Governor Janet Mills announced that the Maine Turnpike Authority has installed a new “Welcome Home” sign on the Maine state border near the Kittery line. In her Inaugural Address, Governor Mills announced that she would install the new sign in an effort to welcome people, including the young, immigrants, entrepreneurs, business owners,
innovators and new employers to the state. “This sign is a simple, inclusive, and powerful message which our state will send to every family, business owner, and young person coming into our state - you are welcome here,” said Governor Mills. “It is also a reminder of the love we all share for this great state as we ensure that Maine is a place of opportunity for all those hoping
to create a better future for themselves and their family. To all of them I say, welcome home.” The new Welcome Home sign was installed today by the Maine Turnpike Authority as a part of a normal replacement schedule. It is made of recycled aluminum from signs previously taken down. According to the Maine Turnpike Authority, installation costs were minimal and primarily involved traffic control.
ELIOT Eliot Elementary School’s second grade students were recently visited by Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Volunteers. The volunteers worked with students to introduce them Bristol Bots. Students were thinking like engineers while they learned about open and closed circuits. Second graders really enjoyed and benefited from the visit.

Timeshares: Fun Until You Die Impact Report on Nonprofits Released PORTLAND The Maine Association of Nonprofits (MANP), the largest membership organization in the state dedicated to working with Maine’s nonprofits, is releasing Adding Up Impact: Maine Nonprofits at Work, a biennial report illustrating the contributions of Maine nonprofits to the state economy and quality of life. The 2019 Adding Up Impact highlights the following key findings: Nonprofits employ over 98,000 Maine citizens, making the nonprofit sector a more significant employer than nearly all other industries in the state. Maine nonprofits contribute approximately $12 billion per year to the economy through wages paid, retail and wholesale purchases, and professional services contracts. Maine’s nonprofit sector paid over $4.7 billion in wages in 2017, or 17.9% of the state’s total payroll. These wages translated in an estimated $271 million of personal income tax revenue for Maine’s state and local governments and over $809 million in federal tax revenues. The report also features return-on-investment stories of impact from nine nonprofits across Maine. These stories bring to life the many ways nonprofits stimulate the economy, strengthen communities, foster civic engagement and weave a strong safety net for Maine’s citizens. “Nonprofits are critical partners with government and business in bolstering Maine’s economic future, said Jennifer Hutchins, MANP Executive Director. The report was funded with support from the Maine Community Foundation, the Maine Health Access Foundation, the Unity Foundation and Healey & Associates. Find the report online on MANP’s website: www.nonprofitmaine.org. The release of the report coincides with the 16th annual Maine Nonprofit Day that took place on January 17 that featured exhibits in the State House Hall of Flags where legislators could learn about the vital contributions
Maine’s diverse nonprofits make to the state economy and quality of life. For more information about the Maine Association of Nonprofits, visit www.nonprofitmaine.org or call 207-8711885.
If you have not properly planned, timeshares can inadvertently saddle your loved ones with headaches and needless expenses when you die. Few people realize most timeshares are deeded real property, even if it is only a week in Sedona, or two weeks in Hawaii. If you own the timeshare jointly with someone (e.g. a spouse or friend), you may be fine. But what if you and your spouse die in a common accident? Or your spouse has
passed and you now own it yourself alone? Owning real property subjects you to a probate in that state when you die. If you do own a timeshare, make sure you have thought about succession planning. Some options are to place the timeshare in a trust (link), or to add a child or friend you wish to inherit your timeshare deed before you die (assuming they
are willing to take on the annual expense after you are gone). Otherwise, you may end up costing your family far more money dealing with the timeshare than it is actually worth, not to mention the added stress! Submitted by Kathryn Bedell of Ballou & Bedell Attorneys at Law, Route 1, York.

Learning to Love You KENNEBUNK On Thursday, February 28, Wendy Abcunas and Steven Ladd of “Happier Ever After” will present “Loving You,” a self-care program designed for women of all ages and career stages. The event will be held 5:30-7:30 p.m. upstairs at Batson River Brewing & Distilling. Learning to understand the best way for you to receive love will help you to develop a “selflove menu” that will truly nourish yourself. A self-love menu is a list of self-care items anyone can pull out to use on those days when perhaps you are feeling stressed, busy or uninspired and when you need self care the most. Wendy and Steven recently founded “Happier Ever After” to help couples deepen their relation-
ships. As a result of their in-person and web programs, people will feel more love, passion and happiness in their relationships than they ever dreamed possible. They feel a deeper sense of connection, have more fun, and enjoy effortless communication. People fall in love again whether they have been together for 20 months or 20 years. The program is part the Kennebunk-Kennebunkport-Arundel Chamber of Commerce’s Driven Women program designed to educate, inspire and empower women of the Kennebunks. Admission is $20 and includes one cocktail, light fare, and the program. Seating is limited and RSVP is required by calling 207-967-0857 or emailing events@gokennebunks.com.

Health & Fitness Cancer and the Environment Many things can cause cancer. Some people may be born with genetic mutations that increase their risk for certain cancers, while others make lifestyle choices, such as smoking tobacco, that make them more vulnerable. Certain environmental factors also may put people at risk of developing cancer. To understand the relationship between cancer and the environment, it helps to understand certain things about the disease. What is a carcinogen? Substances that are known to cause cancer are referred to as “carcinogens.” Extensive research is conducted before something is classified as a carcinogen. The American Cancer Society notes that it is unethical to test a substance by exposing human beings to it, so other types of tests, including lab tests on cell cultures and animals, are conducted to determine if something is a carcinogen. Studies in people that look at human populations and what they might have been exposed to also are conducted. However, because people are exposed to so many substances at any given time, it can be hard to connect any particular exposure to cancer. How are carcinogens classified? A part of the World Health Organization, the International Agency for Research on Cancer aims to identify causes of cancer. The IARC classification system, in which potential cancercausing substances are categorized into one of five groups, is the most widely used system in the world. Does exposure to a carcinogen guarantee I will get cancer? Exposure to a carcinogen does not guarantee a person will get cancer. The National Cancer Institute notes that many factors influence if a person exposed to a carcinogen will get cancer. These factors include an individual’s genetic background as well as the amount and duration of his or her exposure to the carcinogen. Are some people more at risk due to environmental carcinogens? Cancers caused by in-
voluntary exposure to environmental carcinogens are more likely to affect certain people than others. Those who are at greater risk include people who work in certain industries and are exposed to certain environmental carcinogens on the job.
product of exposure to environmental carcinogens. Estimates from researchers even vary widely, with some researchers suggesting environmental carcinogens are responsible for less than 4 percent of all cancer diagnoses while others claim nearly one in five cancers can be attributed to environmental exposures.
Are environmental carcinogens responsible for most cancers? The NCI notes that the precise causes of most cancers are unknown, so it’s impossible to say most cancers are a by-

NEVER DISAPPOINTED WITH BINTLIFF’S. We decided to enjoy a delicious

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

was a gift, as was the 49 years he graced this earth, and he will be dearly missed across multiple continents. To our family and friends in Brazil and Australia, the loss is made more difficult due to distance, but love crosses all boundaries to bond us together. Thomas graduated from Waterville High School in 1987 and went on to join the Air Force where he was first stationed in Woomera, Australia. He was a member of the 243rd Engineering Installation Squadron in South Portland and all told, he gave his service to our country for over 28 years. As part of this service, he saw assignments in the United Arab Emirates Persian Gulf, Iraq, and two deployments in Afghanistan. He was employed with the United States Postal Service for over ten years and at the time of his passing, he was Active Duty state-side with his National Guard Unit. He met and married the love of his life, Milca Rabelo Small, in May of 2005 and immediately became part of her large extended family from Brazil, where he tried to master the art of speaking Portuguese, albeit unsuccessfully. Love has no language barriers, however, and he was welcomed into his wife’s family of 11 siblings with open arms. Thomas leaves behind his wife of 14 years, Milca Small, his parents Duane Small of Westbrook and Englewood, FL, his mother Martha Small of Saco, his sister and brother-inlaw Heidi Small and Matthew Barney and their family of Falmouth, and his mother and father-in-law Maria and Antonio Rabelo of Brazil. All members of his Brazilian family were dear to him, but he will be especially missed by his sister and brotherin-law Raquel and Henrique Linsmeyer, and his special niece Sophia in Melbourne, Australia. His nephew Noah Barney carries on his uncle’s service tradition having joined the Air
National Guard and leaving for basic training just one day before Tom’s passing. His faithful companion Mollie, always by his side, will also miss him dearly. Ever the patriot, he was also a loving husband, son, brother, and uncle, but most of all, he was a good man. The family would like to express their sincere thanks to neighbors Tony and Maryellen Bourbon who were there in his time of need and to the North Berwick Police, Fire and Rescue for their response and heroic efforts. A celebration of life with a full military honor service will be held Sunday, March 3 at 11 a.m. at Spring Hill, 117 Pond Road, South Berwick. Interment will be in the spring at Highland Cemetery, Carmel, ME. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Thomas’ memory to the Duane L. Small Scholarship, UMF Alumni Office, 292 Maine Street, Farmington, ME 04938 or the North Berwick Rescue Squad, PO Box 324, North Berwick, ME 03906. Arrangements are entrusted to the Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market Street, North Berwick. Condolences and memories may be expressed at www.Johnsonfuneralhomeme.com.
Richard C. (Dick) Michaud, 86 WELLS – Richard C. (Dick) Michaud, of Wells, died Saturday morning, February 9, 2019 at Varney Crossing in North Berwick. He was born in Eagle Lake on August 20, 1932, a son of Earnest Henry and Imelda P. (Pelletier) Michaud. Dick had a passion for acting. He loved the arts, music, and Broadway. He, along with his life companion Raymond Vaillencourt, was co-director and a performer of “Hole in the Wallâ€? Theater in Hartford, CT. Dick is predeceased by sister Jackie Bouchard, his brother Norman Michaud, and his companion Raymond Vaillencourt. He is survived by two sisters Juanita Macara and Judith Stentaford, along with many nieces and nephews. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated sometime this summer to accommodate family needs. Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS For a long time, Ariel has been waiting for a loving home. She greets new visitors, adores playtime, and will blossom in a home with someone who will give her lots of one-on-one time where she’d prefer to be the only kitty. Her ideal mama or papa is someone who’ll understand that she wants to call the shots on how long playtime lasts. She can become overstimulated or frightened, which she signals with a gentle swipe of her paw. This can be corrected over time just by noticing when she’s had enough, and establishing the trust she craves from her human. Come meet Ariel at our adoption center at 1420 Post Road. We’re beginning a big volunteer recruitment campaign for our thrift shop next to the Wells IGA. We’re open seven days a week 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. even during the winter months. There is so much to do, and many hands to make it work. Come help us sort donations, set prices, organize the shelves and ring up sales. Since University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI

Lily Clough is WHS’s Student-Athlete of the Month WELLS Wells High School sophomore Lily Clough was recognized recently as Student-Athlete of the Month for December of 2018. She received this award for her academics, sportsmanship and performance playing “center position on a multischool girls’ hockey team that practices and plays at the Biddeford Ice Arena. “Lily Clough has centered the first line for the Biddeford / Thornton Academy / Wells Tigers, creating the majority of the offensive production, commented team coach Adam Flynn. “Her team leading 6 goals in the month of December, along with her workhorse mentality defensively, have made her a truly deserving recipient of this award. Presenting a plaque to Clough on January 24 was WellsOgunquit CSD Director of Athletics 6-12 Pierce Cole, Pamela Moody-Maxon of Moody Maxon Real Estate, and John C. Kreie representing the Cole Harrison Insurance Agency. Both firms are sponsors of the Student-

Athlete of the Month Award at Wells High School. “Lily is a very polite, studious young lady that works very hard both on and off the ice,â€? commented Moody-Maxon who added, “I think it is wonderful that Wells students have the ability to now play hockey with other towns to form teams.â€? “It’s an honor,â€? said Clough after receiving the award. “I just really enjoy sports‌â€? She said that at two and a half years of
age she was skating and has been playing hockey for “as long as I can remember. As of January 31, Clough’s statistics included 11 goals scored with 5 assists. The team’s total goals scored by then was 24. “(She was) a ‘Rising Star’ award winner on the team last year, commented Coach Flynn. “Lily is living up to high expectations and showing the state why Wells very well could be the next powerhouse in girls’ hockey.
New Prizes For KFL Road Race KENNEBUNK The snow may still be falling, but the Kennebunk Free Library is already looking forward to July12 when they host the 22nd Edition of the annual Road Race.
