Local Officials Team Up for Emergency Training Emergency Services Want to Be Prepared

By Timothy Gillis, staff writer ELIOT & SO. BERWICK In the wake of the tragedy in Florida last week, local officials held an active shooter training session. The work was scheduled last year, and is an annual requirement for local law enforcement, but it is quite timely. Police Chief Elliot Moya doesn’t believe the most recent mass shooting adds more pressure to the training session, but

he does hope it adds a realness to the event. The Eliot Police Department along with police, fire, and EMS agencies from surrounding towns held the training session at Marshwood Middle School in Eliot. This past Tuesday’s active shooter training was the first session in more than a decade that Chief Moya can recall being held at an actual school and not at a

mock training site. The training scenarios included identifying the threat of a shooter, hostage situation response, and responding to injured individuals while still in a hostile environment. Maine schools have long been working with local police departments to staff resource officers at schools in their districts. Jeffrey Upton, a full-time police officer for South Berwick, is the resource officer to all of the See TRAINING page 5...

Honoring the Four Chaplains BERWICK In a solemn ceremony at the February meeting of the Charles S. Hatch, Unit 79 of the American Legion Auxiliary in Berwick, Chaplain Ann Urbanski, members Mona Allen, Susan Branyen and Caren Chandler read the life stories of the Four Chaplains. A candle was lit in memory of each Chaplain, and an empty chair with their picture on it reminds us of the ultimate sacrifices that they made. On February 3, 1943, the U.S. troop transport S.S. Dorchester was torpedoed off of Greenland in the early hours of the morning. There were 900 men sleeping. In the midst of the

ensuing chaos, the four Army chaplains, John P. Washington (a Roman Catholic Priest), Alexander D. Goode (a Rabbi), First Lts. Clark V. Poling (a Minister)

Dorchester slipped beneath the waves taking more than 600 men with her, but because of the brave actions of the four chaplains more than 200 men’s lives were spared. Remaining on the deck, the four chaplains linked arms together, sang and prayed as the survivors watched them vanish into the sea. Chaplain Poling’s father, himself serving in North Africa at the time, received word of their noble acts and was inspired to erect a Chapel dedicated to their memory. The Chapel of the Four Chaplains in Philadephia, PA is an interfaith shrine with altars for each faith — Catholic, Jewish, and Protestant — represented by the four men. KENNEBUNK Among the 70,000 artifacts preserved at the Brick Store Museum in downtown Kennebunk are fifty Super 8mm and 16mm film reels, holding nearly 12,000 feet of film. The films were shot by Edith Barry (the Museum’s founder) and others in the early 20th Century. The home movies captured by Barry are especially exciting because they exhibit her travels around the world between 1922 and 1955; plus, others show the familiar streets and structures of the Kennebunks and Maine as they were more than 50 years ago. Additionally, other films include family celebrations, local events, children’s plays, and other home movies. Thanks to a grant by the Institute of Museum & Library Services in 2016, the museum began digitizing the films. In 2018, the museum partnered

with Northeast Historic Film, based in Bucksport, to digitize and conserve the remainder of the films. Historic reel films, including those at the museum, are often in danger of developing vinegar syndrome. Vinegar syndrome is a key issue in film preservation. It is a form of decay that degrades the film, and is named from the vinegar smell it produces. Eventually, films shrink and become brittle; once the process begins, it is important to conserve the film immediately to prevent further decay. To make sure that these precious historic records are not lost to chemical decay, the museum has sped up its digitization efforts and contracted with Northeast Historic Film to complete the project this spring. All of the films will be processed and digitized for future viewing; and the physical film reels will

be protected and held in cold storage (which is exactly what it sounds like) at Northeast Historic Film in Bucksport. Each film must be checked for vinegar syndrome, repaired, prepared, and scanned. Then, the digital version of each film is exported and loaded onto a hard drive for the museum to use and store. When all of the films have been preserved and digitized, the museum will place them in our online archive so that they can be accessed by the public. Such an endeavor is costly; the entire process costs $3,000. Museum staff say that the price tag is not as costly as losing these records forever. The museum asks for the public’s help in saving the films so that they can be used by future generations. Donations can be made online at www.brickstoremuseum.org, or via the mail to the Brick Store Museum, Film Conservation Fund, 117 Main Street, Kennebunk, ME 04043. With your help, all 12,000 feet of film will be saved – our history, in motion, will be preserved for future generations. ...CHAPLAINS from page 1 to all races and religious faiths as an eternal light still burns, a fitting tribute to four men and their great last act of brotherhood, unity, and mercy. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, I have a question I’m hoping you can answer. I use AVG. When the scan is done I get a message “performance issues found, and there is a block to click that says “resolve. At the top of this page it says resolve with AVG PC tuneup. I never click this box because I don’t know if it costs money. I would rather not pay extra if I don’t have to. Thank you, Carolyn Dear Carolyn, You don’t need to click on the box, it is purely advertising, and they want you to buy an additional program. I would advise that you just ignore it. If you feel that your computer needs a tuneup, it would be better to bring it to your local computer shop. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I would like to learn how to download a YouTube video to a CD-R. I have a DVD/CD player and I’d like to download an educational video to a CD-R and play it over and over again without using data on my tablet. Thanks, Yvonne in CA Dear Yvonne, Downloading a YouTube video, burning it onto a disk and then playing it in your DVD player is not impossible, but there are a lot of things to consider. First is the question of legality. Can you legally download the video in question? I am not sure if a video creator has the ability to allow users to download the video or not. I have only been uploading video to YouTube for a short period of time. It is important to remember that some people depend on the income from the advertisements that play every time someone views the video. If everyone downloaded their videos, they would no longer have an income. If you have the legal issues resolved, then you need several more things in place. First, software that will download the YouTube videos, and second, software that will take the downloaded video and burn it onto a disk in a format that your DVD player can use. I don’t have any suggestions for you on the downloading of videos, but I can suggest Roxio Creator for creating a DVD that will be compatible with your player. If any other readers have suggestions, I would love to hear them, either comment using the link below, or send an email to eboston@gwi.net. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Do you know of an easy way to turn my indexing back on? I have a Windows 10 and somehow it got turned off so my searches aren’t working properly and when I simply click on “turn on indexing is just not working. I’ve googled it but I have a come up with a solution yet. Help! Tiffany

Dear Tiffany, I can tell you the way that you should be able to turn indexing back on, but if these methods don’t work, then it means there is a problem with Windows 10 and you will probably need to get your computer fixed. First, you can turn on or off indexing for any drive on your computer. Here is how to do that: 1. Open File Explorer using either the link on your taskbar or in the start menu. 2. Click on “This PC in the left column. 3. Right-click on your hard drive in the main window, and click “Properties in the context menu that appears. 4. Make sure the “General tab is selected in the drive properties dialog box, and make sure there is a check mark at the very bottom where it says, “Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties. 5. If there is not check mark there, click to check it off and click the “OK button at the bottom of the dialog box. Second, you can check to make sure specific locations are indexed. Here is how: 1. Click the start button (or just tap the windows logo key on your keyboard) and type “Indexing

Options. 2. Click on Indexing Options in the start menu. 3. In the Indexing options dialog box, you can view and modify different locations using the “Modify button. 4. If you suspect the index itself is corrupted, you can click the “Advanced button and use the “Rebuild button to delete and rebuild the index. (this could take quite a bit of time depending on the amount of files on your drive). 5. When you are finished, click “OK and then Close. The last thing you can check is that the indexing service is turned on. Here is how to do that: 1. Click the start button (or just tap the windows logo key on your keyboard) and type, “Services. 2. Click on Services in the start menu. 3. Scroll down the list of services until you find “Windows Search and double click on it. 4. Make sure startup type is set to, “Automatic (delayed start) and click the “OK button to save your changes and close the dialog box. Safe Haven Humane Society

WELLS Zeus and Marley have been with Safe Haven for years, watching other kitties come, get adopted, and go. They remain

the best of friends, brothers who groom one another, and stand together if any disturbances arise in the room. They’ve been silently sending us messages that they really, really want a loving home of their own together. They’re beefy, strong, sturdy fellows, shy and slippery, hard to catch. Like many strays we’ve rescued, they don’t quite understand what “being held is all about. Are you trying to trap me and hurt me? they wonder. So they’d rather you show

your affection by brushing them while they’re relaxed and sprawled out in their cat tree, rather than your lap. In fact, they love that so much they’ve been known to drool when brushed long enough. Both are short-hairs, with handsome tiger markings on clean white coats. Marley has a brownish nose; Zeus sports a darling pink one. Because Safe Haven is diligent about dental care, all our kitties see a dentist. Zeus has been a few times and has been nicknamed “Toothless Zeus (but not within hearing distance. We don’t want to em-

barrass him.) His lack of teeth doesn’t hinder his eating in any way, as you can see by his Winnie-the-Pooh shape. Zeus and Marley are absolutely precious kitties, adored by all of us volunteers, and we want them to finally have their turn at adoption. They’ve waited long enough. These sweet fellows have what it takes to be beloved family members. They’ll bless your home with the quiet presence of two devoted broth-

ers who want to know what a home of their very own feels like. Call our Adoption Center at 207-646-1611 and come visit them. Our thrift shop, next to the Wells IGA, is having a huge 50 percent off winter clothing sale. Racks are being added and clothing is restocked daily.

Another Chance Animal Rescue NORTH BERWICK Continuing updates on the kittens we’ve been featuring here and helping: They are doing well and making strides, albeit baby steps with their health. Bon Bon is the runt of his litter and is the most critically ill of the bad eye group. He is eight weeks old and weighs in at a hefty 0.9 lbs. When he arrived he weighed 0.4 lbs. Bon Bon had the least possible chance to survive, but Bon Bon had other ideas. He doesn’t have much vision in one eye and may not have any vision in the other eye, but he is a spunky little guy who fully intends to complete this battle to live a full and complete life. Our vet service has upgraded him to guardedly optimistic

for recovery. Brother Philip is also a black tiger eight weeks old is now able to see out of one of his eyes, and there is again guarded optimism that the other eye will provide him with some limited vision potentially and with the help of surgery. Sister Daisy, an exquisite Russian Blue girl, is also enjoying vision in one eye. Her other eye will need additional care before any final decisions can be made about any vision in this eye. Surgery is very likely in this process for her. Another Chance Animal Rescue would like to express our most sincere gratitude to the reading and viewing public who have so graciously provided help in so many ways for these tiny kittens in crisis. From donating financially to cover escalating vet costs, so many wonderful people have stepped forward to provide hand on medical care for these kittens. Others have stopped by the rescue to provide precious helping hands with our other cats we are caring for as

Clay Projects from Great Works Art Class SOUTH BERWICK Under the leadership of art teacher Rhonda Miller, the Marshwood Great Works students began with viewing slides representing the creation and different uses of ceramics through history. Students discussed the utilitarian and sculptural aspects related to the use of clay. Following a demonstration about basic hand-building techniques, students created their own pieces and glazed them.

MMS Band Work with Guest Conductor ELIOT Marshwood Middle School’s Grade 7 and 8 band had as their guest conductor Dr. Andrew Boysen, the Director of Wind Bands at the University of New Hampshire. The pieces are “Unraveling and “Metamorphosis. Boysen shared his time and experiences as an outstanding conductor and a wellknown and respected composer. This is the second time Boysen has worked with students at Marshwood Middle School. Four years ago, he worked with the band on another one of his compositions, “Tricycle.

How to Encourage Kids to Take Care of their Teeth Parents of young children know that getting kids to brush their teeth can sometimes feel like pulling teeth. Kids have a long history of disliking dental care, which can frustrate parents who know the importance and long-lasting benefits of proper dental hygiene. While many youngsters may never excitedly run to the bathroom to brush their teeth, parents can try various approaches to get kids to embrace proper dental care. Start early. Parents should not hesitate to begin cleaning kids’ teeth once the first tooth appears. The earlier dental care is part of a child’s routine, the more likely he or she is to accept it as part of everyday life. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends using a soft-bristled brush with a small head. Ideally, use a toothbrush designed for infants, brushing teeth once per day at bedtime. The AAPD advises taking kids to visit a pediatric dentist when the first tooth appears, or no later than the child’s first birthday. Make it a group effort. Young children love to imitate their parents’ actions and behaviors, and moms and dads can use that adoration to their advantage when trying to get kids to brush their teeth. Brush

teeth together as a family, making it seem like an enjoyable twice-daily activity. Get down on kids’ level and show See TEETH page 13...

BUSINESS & FINANCE Hire-A-Vet Campaign Helps Nearly 300 Get Jobs AUGUSTA Employers participating in 2017’s Maine Hire-A-Vet Campaign hired 296 veterans and military family members during its 100-day initiative. One-hundred-and-fifty-four employers from all 16 Maine counties participated in the campaign, with an average placement wage reported of $23.16 per hour. The campaign launched last Labor Day and ended December 13. Final numbers were collected into January due to the length of hiring processes. “Maine’s Hire-A Vet cam-

paign continues to successfully educate employers about the value veterans bring to our workforce, said Governor Paul R. LePage. The campaign provides support for employers to expand the hiring of veterans, including a network of state and federal agencies, resources and nonprofits, education on military language and culture, assistance with recruiting, hiring, assimilation and retention, and recognition for the hiring and advancement of veterans. The 2017 campaign’s numbers were an increase over the 2016 campaign by six participating employers (148 in 2016), 101

hires (195 in 2016), and reported wages of plus $0.93 per hour ($22.23 in 2016). Of the 296 total hires, 275 were veterans and 21 were military family members. Women veteran hires were 52 of the 275 reported (roughly 20 percent). Female veterans make up 10 percent of Maine’s total veteran population. Participating employers were not required to hire veterans or military family members they interviewed in order to be a part of the campaign. SPORTS

The Best on the Mats, Back to Back WELLS & OGUNQUIT The boys’ varsity wrestling team from Wells-Ogunquit grabbed its second straight state championship last weekend. The program’s strength comes from dedicated athletes and a coaching legacy that stretches for a quarter century. Head coach Scott Lewia took a moment to reflect while cleaning out the locker room this week. Lewia was assistant to his brother, Mark, for 21 years. Mark led the grapplers for 23 years. This is the fourth time they have lifted the golden trophy. They first won in 1988 and then again in 1997. When asked if they would compete for the three-peat next year,

Scott quickly demurred. “It will be tough to win states three times in a row,” he said, but added that, despite their senior leadership this year, they do have some strong returning wrestlers. The five seniors moving on are Ryan Norton, Drew Peters, Michael Wrigley, Nolan Potter, and Sean McCormackKuhman. They amassed 592 wins during their high school careers, and all five placed in the state’s top four (in their respective weight divisions) for the past two years. That said, the powerhouse program returns nine of fourteen. Trying to fill the exiting seniors’ shoes are some under-

class standouts, two of whom placed at states this year. “I also had two injured kids who didn’t wrestle this year,” Scott said of the previous winners of state matches. “So I hope they will be back.” For a program that doesn’t rebuild so much as reload, a full slate of wrestlers next year would spell trouble for opponents.

Did You Know? Statistics from U.S. Youth Soccer indicate that millions of children across the country are taking to the sport that was once primarily associated with Europe and other parts of the world beyond the United States. According to U.S. Youth Soccer, more than three million youth players were registered to play soccer in 2014. That marks an amazing increase from just 40 years earlier, when barely more than 100,000 youths registered to play soccer. While the reasons behind the growing popularity of soccer within the United States are not officially known, one might reasonably trace

KITTERY Jacob Gagner (Senior) was the solo point scorer for Traip Academy at the Indoor Track Class B State Championships at Bates College, with a 5th place

finish in the boys 200m dash with a personal best of 23.65 and a 6th place finish in the 55m dash finals with a time of 6.89. He also competed in the 55m hurdles and finished 9th with a time of 8.66.

American youths’ embrace of the sport to the U.S. Men’s National Team’s appearance in the 1990 World Cup. Though the team was defeated in each of its three matches in the 1990 World Cup, the appearance marked the United States’ first since 1950. In fact, participation in youth soccer in the United States in

2014 marked an 89 percent increase since 1990. In addition, the United States hosted the 1994 World Cup, likely generating even more interest in soccer, which many American youths now consider their favorite sport.
